Ambiguous Name: Doting Grandparent

Go To

To-do list:

  • Doting Grandparent was redefined to mean what the phrase means offsite (i.e., grandparents who are very affectionate toward their grandchildren, such as grandparents who spoil their grandchildren), similarly to what Doting Parent already means for parents, and move examples that fit the original definition (friendships between grandparents and granchildren) to Intergenerational Friendship.
The description was rewritten to account for this, and on-page examples and wicks need to be cleaned up to comply with the new definition. Wick cleanup is being tracked at Sandbox.Grandparent Wick Cleaning.

Note: This thread was proposed by Adept.

Problem: As per the description, the trope is defined as "a grandparent with attitude and a young spirit, as much or even more vitality than his/her grandchildren, a captivating nature that makes the children enjoy him/her as a friend, and is a counterpoint to the parents (While the parents are Serious Business the grandparents are all about fun)". The laconic agrees with this, stating: "A grandparent who is friends with their grandchildren and treats them as their equals." So basically, this trope seems to be a grandparent-version of a Cool Uncle.

The problem is, this is not a common use of the term "doting", which usually refers to excessive pride/affection and overindulgence towards the child's desires, even when discipline might be more appropriate, as it is used in Doting Parent. The page even has to explicitly state that Doting Grandparent is not about "grandparents who spoils their grandkids", implicitly acknowledging that the trope name doesn't actually fit the definition.

Here's the wick check for Doting Grandparent.

Out of 50 wicks checked, only 4 of them seem to indicate that the grandparent "treats their grandkids as equals/with respect". Almost half (19/50) are ZCE, while the most common use seems to just boil down to "grandparents love grandkids", which is borderline chairs.

Some possible fixes:

  1. Rename the trope. Cool Grandparent would probably be more indicative of what this trope is trying to be, though I'm not sure it's distinct enough from Cool Old Guy or Cool Old Lady to warrant a separate page.
  2. Redefine the trope into "Grandparents who spoil their grandkids" and clean up examples that don't fit. However there is some concern that this is redundant to Grandparent Favoritism.
  3. Cut the trope. Maybe disambiguate between Cool Old Guy, Cool Old Lady, Granny Classic, Grandparent Favoritism, etc.

It's a severe blow when he dies, especially since Jonah doesn't understand the concept of death.

  1. Characters.Rune Factory 3: He spoils Monica, despite Shara instructing him not to.
  2. Literature.Aunt Dimity: Willis Sr. vis-à-vis Will and Rob. There are many references to this, including a jocular reference to the "law" that grandparents must spoil their grandchildren and being an attorney, Willis Sr. is stickler for obeying the law. He refurbishes the stables at Fairworth House not for his own use (he doesn't ride himself), but so that the twins will ride over for frequent visits.
  3. Webcomic.Little Rose: White Diamond seems to fill this role for Rose, even going so far as giving an undeveloped colony for Rose despite the fact that she is, you know, a baby.

She gives him a toy telephone for his fifth birthday so that he will always be able to talk to her on it. She dies later that day, after mistaking Billy for her son (and his father) Chris. She begins to communicate with him over the toy phone from beyond the grave and convinces Billy to commit suicide so that they can be Together in Death. When Billy is on the brink of death after being found face down in the family pond, Chris talks to his mother over the toy phone and persuades her to let Billy live if she really loves him.

He keeps his distance because he is known to be rough and forceful, and he is warned that Rozemyne could collapse at any moment if he isn't careful. He would love nothing more than to spend time with her. Rozemyne being abducted at the end of Part 3 triggers his protective instincts and makes him recklessly charge forward to save her. While she is recovering from her injuries between Part 3 and 4, Bonifatius keeps annoying Ferdinand by sending ordonnanz messages every day to ask about Rozemyne's condition.
  2. PapaWolf.Anime And Manga: Back in the original series Ox-King was very much a Papa Wolf to his only daughter Chi-Chi, as he would go on a rampage with his ax whenever anyone (e.g the Red Ribbon Army) endangered her or his future son in law Goku. He also made his first appearance begging for Goku to find Chi-Chi after she went looking for the Bansho Fan and did not return. While Ox-King did get Overshadowed by Awesome, even by his own daughter, he still succeeds in being a Doting Grandparent to Gohan especially after the Cell Games when Goku died (again).

  1. Characters.Eighty Six Eighty Six: He wants to be this to Shin, but his grandson's emotional detachment prevents it. An example of this is in a Volume 7 side-story where Seiei gets nervous trying to decide a gift for Shin's birthday, but can't, because the marquis doesn't know what his grandson likes.

Grandparent Favoritism wick check:

Grandparent Favoritism is supposed to be "grandparents who favor their grandchildren over their children," but the name points toward it meaning "favors a particular grandchild" a la Parental Favoritism. A quick glance over the on-page examples shows both definitions in play. I will check every wick and any on-page examples that aren't already crosswicked.

  1. Characters.Bobs Burgers The Belcher Family: He and Bob have a very strained relationship that, even after they make up in "Father of the Bob", has only improved at a slow pace. He also doesn't seem to like his daughter-in-law that much, looking rather annoyed by her comment on him shrinking with age. However, he adores his grandchildren, dotes on them, gives them money and lets them into his basement when they need stuff, a stark contrast from their maternal grandparents.
  2. Characters.Codex Equus Grittish Isles: Her paternal grandfather doted on and spoiled her, having long ago written off the rest of his immediate family, relatives, and descendants as a bunch of vile, greedy, cruel, and unrepentant wastes of space. When he wasn't pretending to be senile, he would give her advice on how to kill off the worst of the Malefias. For her part, she genuinely loved her grandfather back, and when he was murdered by her no-show father for willing his entire inheritance to her, she angrily confronted her father and burned him alive in revenge.
  3. Characters.Despicable Me The Gru Family: Despite her emotional abuse of her son she bonds quickly with her granddaughters, even before they're formally adopted.
  4. Characters.Family Guy Antagonists: Surprisingly, he gets along well with Chris, Meg and Stewie and is mostly happy to see them whenever he can. He even bonds with Chris, for better or worse, in "Fresh Heir". gkids > son-in-law
  5. Characters.Genshin Impact Liyue: Hu Tao has profound respect and admiration for her grandfather who, in return, also loved her a lot; [[spoiler:wishing for her to conduct his funeral. He passed his hat down to her, and she exhausted herself trying to find her grandfather's spirit for days while trying to commemorate his funeral, falling asleep from tiredness, even after the other spirits wandering there laughed at her]]. wanted gkid to bury, not kid
  6. Characters.Gilmore Girls Gilmore Family:
    • Emily and Richard adore Rory and put her on a higher pedestal than they do Lorelai.
    • Rory is his only grandchild, but he is a lot more lenient with her than he is with Lorelai or Emily.
  7. Characters. The Proud Family Proud Extended Family: He never got to know his grandson, but after seeing him be a natural cowboy, he’s grown fond of him. Oscar couldn’t be happier to have an elder relative that respects him.
  8. Characters. The Proud Family Proud Family: "Well Done, Daughter!" Gal: In the reboot, her father belittled and dismissed her attempts to show how skilled she is in rodeo because of her gender. It's tellingly the only thing he ever complimented her on was having Oscar and even then it's a Stealth Insult when he says she did "one thing right" with a less than proud look on his face.
  9. Characters.Rugrats: His two sons, Drew and Stu, tend to get on his nerves whenever they argue and/or whenever Stu's inventions malfunction. However, he has a soft spot for his granddaughter, Angelica, and his two grandsons, Tommy and Dil, and will often tell them stories from his youth.
  10. Characters. The Simpsons Extended Family: He has shown plenty of times to have more love and respect for his grandchildren than his son and in particular is closest to his oldest grandchild and only grandson, Bart.
  11. Characters.Turning Red: Wu is tough on her daughters (to the point that Ming feared her). With Mei, however, she's stern, but not too intimidating. She's quite doting towards her as well.
  12. Characters. The Vampire Chronicles: Thomas "Pops" and Rose "Sweetheart" Blackwood see their daughter Patsy (who they had rather late in life) as a disappointment for going wild and country as well as her Teen Pregnancy at sixteen so Quinn became their much favored child.
  13. Characters. With Pearl And Ruby Glowing: Possibly. She seems to be closer with Huan than she is with her own kids anyway, but they're similar. It's unclear if this holds true for his siblings as well.
  14. Fanfic. After The Jungle Series: "The Spelling Bee II" shows that Helga's parents, Bob and Miriam, have a pretty good relationship with her and Arnold's kids.
  15. Film.Riding In Cars With Boys: The relationship between Beverly and her already strict parents was strained to say the least after she became pregnant, but they each adored their grandson, Jason, even into adulthood.
  16. Film. The Silver Chalice: Deborra's connection with her grandfather Joseph of Arimethea is resented by the man who is his son and her father.
  17. Literature.I Think I Love You: Molly and Greta had the loving, uncomplicated relationship that Petra and Greta never did. After Greta's death, Molly is able to simply grieve, while Petra's grief is mixed with anger.
  18. Literature. In Cryptid: Alice has a better relationship with her grandchildren than her children, probably because she left them to be raised by her friends at a carnival while she went dimension-hopping to search for her missing husband.
  19. Literature.Shtum: Ben doesn't understand why Georg is so much more open and affectionate with Jonah than he ever was with him.
  20. Main.Jerkass To One: The Proud Family: In the reboot, the Prouds meet Suga Mama's father, Pa Towne. He's naturally an ill-tempered man, but he's even less pleasant to his daughter, sometimes going out of his way to verbally demean her. When he shows actual respect to Oscar of all people, he gives the only "compliment" he ever gave his daughter, that she did "one thing" right, namely having a son.
  21. Pantheon.Other Relatives: Fond Of His Grandkids
  22. Quotes.Wrong Name Outburst:
Emily: You are becoming more like your mother with every passing day.
Rory: And you are becoming more like my mother's mother with every passing day.
  23. Recap.Criminal Case World Edition Case 26 Dead In The Water: Obaasan constantly mentions her grandchildren, but her own offspring are absent from her dialogue.
  24. Recap.Law And Order Special Victims Unit S 3 E 21 Denial: Rose, Grace's mother, prefers her surviving granddaughter Claire over her angry and abusive daughter. Even when interviewed by detectives, she explicitly says that she's only interested in helping Claire. Given what kind of a person Grace is, it's understandable.
  25. Recap.Law And Order Special Victims Unit S 10 E 19 Selfish: Both of Ashley's parents, particularly her mother, prefer their young granddaughter over their irresponsible daughter. Her father even explaining that her birth motivated him to stop drinking.
  26. Series.Coronation Street: Notoriously grumpy Blanche was more likely to defend Tracy than she was Deirdre, and went out of her way to provide for her. This becomes apparent in 2003 when Tracy became pregnant via a one-night stand; that Christmas sees Blanche gifting her a flat with money that was to go towards Deirdre's inheritance, in the hope that she kept the grandchild instead of giving it to the Croppers. Needless to say, her daughter was understandably furious.
  27. Series.Family Matters: Downplayed with Estelle. While she does love and respect her son Carl, she is also quick to scold him when he goofs up royally. She also acts as a respected mentor and mediator whenever he has an issue or disagreement with one of the children, particularly Eddie or Steve, who has a deep shared respect for her as if she were his own grandmother.
  28. Series.Gilmore Girls: Emily and Richard adore Rory and put her on a higher pedestal than they do Lorelai.
  29. Series.Love Lies And Murder: Played with. While David's parents do love their son, they clearly love their eldest granddaughter, too (with Cinnamon and her grandfather in particular sharing a special bond). It was even his knowledge of David and Patti's affair that eventually caused her to turn on him and put them both in prison.
  30. Series.Mamas Family: While it's no secret that Thelma likes her grandchildren more than her children and the people that they married, it was most obvious with the mutually loving and functional relationship she had with Bubba over Eunice. While Eunice was sniping and embittered towards her from the time she was a child, teenaged Bubba was able to transform from a sassy juvenile delinquent to a responsible college man under her guise.
  31. Series.Nonno Felice: Felice is a Doting Grandparent to Federico, Eva, and Morena and a complete jerk to his son Franco, even outright telling him that he's a disgrace multiple times and that his children are the only good things he has ever done in his life (though he's mostly just joking and can be kind towards him at times). He's also very nice to his daughter-in-law Ginevra, in contrast to the way he treats his son.
  32. Series.Passions: Played with regarding Alastair. He treats everyone he knows like crap including and especially his own family members, but he has taken a shine to eldest grandson, Ethan, a smart and charming lawyer, and feels he is a much more suitable heir to the Crane fortune and business over the alcoholic playboy Julian. That is, until it's revealed that Ethan wasn't his grandson due to a one-time fling that Ivy had with her ex-boyfriend Sam right before her wedding to Julian.
  33. WellDoneSonGuy.Western Animation: The Proud Family: In the reboot, Suga Mama's father Pa Towne was a Straw Misogynist who looked down on her just for being a girl and would dismiss her attempts at trying to impress him with her rodeo skills. She has a very notable look of jealousy when he starts showering Oscar with the parental affection she never got from him.

  1. Wonder Woman Vol 1: Grandma Heyday much prefers her three orphaned granddaughters to her living son Joel, and even cuts Joel out of her will entirely. In retaliation he plots to kill her and his nieces and the Heyday women are only saved by Wonder Woman's timely intervention.
  2. The Wolverine: Ichiro Yashida favored his granddaughter Mariko more than his son, Shingen (resulting in him leaving Mariko everything in his will). This drove Shingen to be deeply resentful of his daughter, to the point of trying to have her assassinated.
  3. In An Ember in the Ashes, Elias's grandfather is far more supportive of him than his cruel mother. This is, however, due to his grandfather also being rather sexist and abusive himself; he despises his daughter, Elias's mother, as a result.
  4. Seen plenty of times on The Golden Girls with Blanche and Sophia. The latter usually snarks at Dorothy and talks about what a screw up Phil is, but she is always excited to see her grandchildren and even gave money she took from Dorothy to give to her children. The former's Hands-Off Parenting and other selfish tendencies have put a strain on the relationship between her and her children, particularly her eldest daughter Janet, but she loves her grandchildren dearly and their love for her is mutual.
  5. Veep: Selina's endlessly critical, sniping, and abusive mother Catherine is still extremely rude to Selina's daughter Catherine; but the younger Catherine's genuine interest in her, grief over her, and actual attempts to give her what she likes (and possibly the fact that she's named after her) means that the billionaire Catherine disinherits Selina and wills her entire estate to the younger Catherine upon her death.
  6. The Twilight Zone (1959): In the episode "Long Distance Call," the grandmother is bitter that her son Chris left her to get married and now treats her like she's in the way, but she dotes on her grandson Billy, the only person whom she feels still cares about her. This reaches the point that [[spoiler: after she dies, her spirit communicates with Billy through his toy telephone and tries to persuade him to commit suicide so they can [[TogetherInDeath be together]], not caring that this will leave her son [[OutlivingOnesOffspring bereft.]] Only by pleading for Billy's sake and not his own does Chris convince her to let Billy live in the end.]]
  7. The Simpsons: The Days of Future episodes show that much like Abe, Homer will be a much better grandfather to Bart's sons than he was a father to Bart.
  8. Subverted in Archer, where Malory Archer is just as terrible to her granddaughter AJ as she is to her son Sterling. In some ways, she's actually worse; Sterling, at least, had some degree of insulation from his mother because she was still an active field agent during his formative years, and thus left him in the care of her butler Woodhouse, whereas AJ was born after Malory retired from the front lines, allowing her to give her far more of her toxic attention.
  9. King of the Hill: Cotton Hill considers his son Hank a disappointment, and does not hesitate to say so to his face. He's far more loving towards his grandson Bobby, and on one episode states that he'd take a bullet for him. Interestingly, Cotton has a baby son with his much younger wife whom he dotes on; he calls him "Good Hank".
  10. The Proud Family: Suga Mama frequently mocks and insults her son Oscar, but is a Doting Grandparent to Penny. However, she also gets along with her daughter-in-law; she's really only rude to her son.

    Gkid A > Gkid B: 9 + 2
  1. Characters. The Baby Sitters Club 2020: Claudia is shown to think she is Mimi's favorite, as they have a very close relationship. She is shocked to see that Mimi and Janine are close in other ways (Janine speaks fluent Japanese and knows about Mimi's past). subversion of this definition
  2. Characters. The Boss Baby: She clearly prefers Tim over Boss Baby, whose corporate attire and attitude reminds her of her old bosses from her steel worker days.
  3. Characters.Diary Of A Wimpy Kid:
    • She decorates her refrigerator solely with pictures of Manny and takes any opportunity to babysit him.
    • He openly states Greg is his favorite grandchild, possibly because Greg is the only one who even attempts to put up with his many Cloudcuckoolander habits.
  4. Characters.Helluva Dad: Despite having never met Jake in person, Gustav named him his universal heir for being his only male grandchild.
  5. Characters.Scenes De Menages: They have two grandsons. They think Corentin is an idiot, but they love that Anthony is as annoying as they are.
  6. Characters. With Pearl And Ruby Glowing Water Of The Womb: The Unfavorite: It's not said outright, but he does seem to be this to Oak, who in all fairness does have his reasons for paying attention to Gary, and issues with Blue's father.
  7. Literature.Crazy Rich Asians: Shang Su Yi, the matriarch of the family prefers Nick and Astrid over her other grandchildren.
  8. Series.Scenes De Menages: Huguette and Raymond have two grandsons. They think Corentin is not the brightest bulb, but love that Anthony is as annoying as they are.
  9. WesternAnimation.Lego City Adventures: Sam Grizzled seems to show favoritism towards his grandson Brayden due to their alike personalities and not to mention Sam's initial reluctance to spend time with his granddaughter Poppy and even told her right on her face that he doesn't consider her job to be important or relevant.

  1. The Quintessential Quintuplets: A minor example, as it only happens during one chapter, but during New Year, Fuutarou is a little put off by the fact that his grandparents gave his sister Raiha some money while giving nothing to him.
  2. Hannah Montana: In her first appearance, Mamaw Stewart heaps attention on Jackson and practically ignores Miley, to Miley's annoyance. After Mamaw chooses to attend Jackson's volleyball game rather than attend Miley's performance for the Queen of England, Miley finally confronts her about this. Mamaw tells Miley that she loves both of them, and justifies her supposed favoritism of Jackson by pointing out that he has so few moments to shine compared to his pop star sister, and needs to have someone who will be there for them during those moments.

    Inverse, Gparent A > Rest: 2

Thank you for clearing that up, Yindee. I'm sorry for the late reply and overly emotional response. I see that the changes that will be applied to it are for the better (I was just worried that it was going to be nuked overall).

I can't deal with these forums; they anger up the blood too much.

Calling in favor of the following:

  • Redefine Doting Grandparent to mean what the phrase means offsite (i.e., grandparents who are very affectionate toward their grandchildren, such as grandparents who spoil their grandchildren), similarly to what Doting Parent already means for parents, and move examples that fit the original definition (friendships between grandparents and granchildren) to Intergenerational Friendship
  • Move examples of Grandparent Favoritism that involve grandparents favoring one grandchild over the others (similarly to what Parental Favoritism means for parents) to Parental Favoritism, while reserving Grandparent Favoritism for the current definition of grandparents preferring their grandchildren over their own children (i.e., their grandchildren's parents)

Made a sandbox for the redefinition. Removed the page quote and advertising example, since that doesn't even mention grandkids.

Although I do wonder how much the grandparents need to dote on the grandkids to count. A lot of the on-page examples seem to state that the grandparent love and support the grandchild, but not excessively so.

[up]I don't think it needs to be excessive. That's just one way it could occur.

I'm done with Grandparent Favoritism's wick cleanup. Cleanup didn't take long, and made some tweaks to its description and Parental Favoritism's description to account for when Parental Favoritism applies with grandparents (and the fact that they aren't mutually exclusive, if the favorite grandchild is also preferred over the grandparent's own children).

Doting Grandparent will probably take longer, especially since the description needs to be changed to a greater extent.

[up][up]But if it's not excessive, wouldn't that just reduce the trope to "grandparents who love their grandkids"? That seems like chairs.

[up]Also, I'm done tinkering with the description in the sandbox linked in my previous post. Is it good enough to switch? I mostly left the examples alone.

Re: First line: I misunderstood what you said the first time I read that post because it seems like I had a brain fart and mixed up what you said the trope should be and what the examples say. Yes, after re-reading your posts and thinking about it a bit more, I agree that showing affection to an excessive extent should be necessary after thinking about it a bit more. I already had excessive affection in mind at least to an extent, since I did say "very affectionate" instead of just "affectionate" on my writeup for its entry on next month's Trope Report's changelog (currently located on the Sandbox.Trope Report Dummy Edition sandbox in case anyone wants to double-check it), in addition to giving grandparents who spoil their grandchildren as an example of a way it can occur. (But even if that wording isn't strong enough, I can change it by the time it goes live next month.)

Re: Second line: I think it looks fine, but I'll see if anyone else has any more feedback to provide.

Well, since it's been three days, and there's no objections so I went ahead and changed the description.

Now to tackle the on-page examples, starting from Advertising and Anime & Manga:

  • Health Hotline: When Grandma gets a knee brace, she feels young and healthy. She even spends her time skateboarding. No mention of grandchildren. Easy cut. Possibly move to Cool Old Lady'
  • Crayon Shin-chan has the titular character's grandfathers, Ginnosuke Nohara and Yoshiji Koyama (the fathers of Hiroshi and Misae, respectively) who genuinely dotes over Shin-Chan and Himawari, although the latter tends to be slightly strict and overbearing sometimes due to being a retired discipline teacher. Best exemplified in the story arc which introduces Himawari, where a week after Himawari is born both Ginnosuke and Yoshiji immediately goes on a gift-buying spree (Barbies from the former, stuffed toys for the latter) trying to out-do each other with presents for baby Himawari. Cue the grandmothers scolding them for wasting their monthly retirement budgets over the ridiculous amount of toys that fills up an entire room. Correct
  • Dragon Ball:
    • Son Goku is a doting grandfather to his granddaughter Pan when she's in his care, and he is seen indulging in her whims. He teaches her how to say 'gramps' and plays airplane with her when she's a baby. In Dragon Ball Super, during the Post-Moro battle victory party, Goku is paying more attention to baby Pan's antics than his own food (keep in mind that he usually prioritizes fighting and eating over everything and everyone else). Eventually, he goes on to personally train her in martial arts, becoming his second student. Correct
    • The Ox-King is very fond of his grandsons Gohan and Goten, often buying them toys and spoiling them. Correct
  • In Kotoura-san, Haruka has a very doting grandfather. Out of everyone in her family, he was the only one who cared about her even when her psychic abilities were discovered. He even took full custody when her mother abandoned her. However, he's also a Dirty Old Man who has fantasizes about his teenage granddaughter. Probably correct, though it needs more context about how he dotes on Haruka. The last line abtout him being a Dirty Old Man is irrelevant
  • Mari's grandmother from Inside Mari was one of these, however, Mari's mother didn't like her mother-in-law or how close she was to Mari. When she died Mari's mother went as far as to change Mari's name in order to disassociate Mari with her grandmother. Not enough context. There's some conflict between Mari's mother and grandmother due to their closeness, but doesn't describe how the grandmother dotes on Mari.
  • Marnie from When Marnie Was There died when her granddaughter was very young but was a caring grandmother for the time they spent together. She had an estranged relationship with her own daughter due to her daughter believing she abandoned her. [[spoiler:Marnie's love Anna is a focus of the film, though Marnie is presented as Anna's age until The Reveal at the end that she's Anna's grandmother. Lacks context. It just states that the grandparent cares for the granddaughter, but doesn't seem to be excessively doting/affectionate towards her.
  • Hungramps from Yo-kai Watch was one of these in life. He had a granddaughter who he adored however as she grew she started spending less time with him. He ended up becoming ill and died of his illness. His granddaughter had made it her aspiration to become a doctor and cure him, and even after his death, she continued her dream of becoming a doctor. Hungramps originally appeared haunting a convenience store because he was waiting to see his granddaughter again. Lacks context. It just states that the grandparent loves the granddaughter, but doesn't seem to be excessively doting/affectionate towards her.
  • Rinne adoptive grandfather from ViVid Strike! was shown to love her as if he was his own flesh and blood back when he was alive (even if he didn't get to spend much time with her due to illness confining him to his bed), and she still loves to the present day. In fact, her personality change was brought about due to a trio of bullies keeping her from seeing him when he died. Lacks context. It just states that the grandparent loves the granddaughter, but doesn't seem to be excessively doting/affectionate towards her.'
  • Naruto: Tsunade, the fifth Hokage is the granddaughter of Hashirama Senju, the first Hokage. Hashirama reveals that since Tsunade was his first grandchild, he spoilt her rotten and was responsible for her gambling habit. Seems correct.
  • The Boruto anime reveals that Hiashi Hyuga, who was a borderline Abusive Parent to his eldest daughter during the first part of Naruto, has mellowed out into a loving grandparent to said daughter's children. Probably correct
  • Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: The three great demons are the most powerful demons of the netherworld, second only to the demon king. All three of them are extremely fond of their grandsons and spare no opportunity bragging about them. One of them, Lord Sullivan had never married and decided to adopt a human as his grandchild he could dote on. It was for this reason he bought Iruma from his parents. Not that Iruma minds because Lord Sullivan is far better than his own feckless and abusive parents. Correct
  • Katana Maidens (Toji no Miko): Dr Friedman could be considered one to Ellen Kohagura as he is her grandfather and when she calls for a "taxi" while on the run, he brings a submarine. Also, in Episode 7 of the English Dub, there is this line "Oh, no you spoiled the surprise, silly granddaughter, but I love you anyway" Lacks context. It just states that the grandparent loves the granddaughter, but doesn't seem to be excessively doting/affectionate towards her.

I updated the to-do list since the description was updated. Has anyone cleaned the on-page examples yet? I might be able to take care of them in the near future (and maybe some of the wicks since we're not getting rid of all of them), but I haven't been feeling the best lately, so I've been sticking to doing simpler tasks.

I've cut several on-page examples that doesn't seem to fit the new definition, and added a couple more examples that do (including the current page image). Will check out the wicks later.

Since on-page examples have already been cleaned, I went through some of the wicks. Thankfully, most wicks already fit the revised definition, so I didn't need to remove much (though I did remove a small amount of ZCEs).

I updated the sandbox to account for both what I went through and what doesn't need to be looked through (i.e., letters that don't have any namespaces beginning with them to go through).

[up]Noted on the sandbox. I might be able to get the rest since the fact that there were probably more T wicks than for most other letters due to how many works begin with "The" means the amount of remaining work was cut down quite a bit.
