Raymond & Huguette

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sdm_1.png

A couple of senior citizens trying to fill their time now that Raymond is retired. Left after season 14.

  • Affectionate Nickname : Raymond calls Huguette "Guéguette", and occasionally "ma poule" ("my chicken", carrying the meaning of "doll").
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: While they spend most of their screentime being awful at each other, they do love each other and could hardly function on their own. There is even an episode with no other joke than Raymond telling his wife to be careful when crossing the street every day, and planning to continue, because he wants her to be safe.
  • The Baby Trap: Huguette faked being pregnant so that Raymond would propose.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Both have had decades to practice their jibes, after all.
  • December–December Romance: Both are in their 80's.
  • Doting Parent: Averted. Neither of them really like their daughter Caroline.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Which makes sense, since they are one.
  • Meet Cute : Met in 1965 while walking around a pond, because Raymond missed a train.
  • Parental Favoritism: They have two grandsons. They think Corentin is an idiot, but they love that Anthony is as annoying as they are.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: Both snivelly old farts and loving every minute of it.

    Raymond

Played By: Gérard Hernandez

A former gendarme bored with retirement.

  • Everyone Has Standards: He kicked a friend out of his appartment for making sexist comments on a woman's football game.
Maéva: Mr Raymond, I had no idea you were so pro-women.
    Raymond: I am not pro-women, I'm anti-morons.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: Learns in season 10 that he conceived a son before marrying Huguette that he never knew about.
  • Miniature Senior Citizen : Apparently shrunk with age.
  • The Prankster: Of the mean-spirited sort. In the 20th special, he poses as an astronomer on the radio and makes millions of people (including all the other couples) believe that a comet is about to crash on France.
  • Retired Badass: Averted. He used to be a gendarme, a military police officer, but he was not really good at it. When he gets a medal for his years of service, not even he can figure out why.

    Huguette

Played By: Marion Game

A housewife trying to deal with the new situation of her husband being at home constantly.

  • Celeb Crush: On Mickaël François, a Frédéric François Captain Ersatz who takes full advantage of her devotion. She is the president of her fan club.
  • Fiery Redhead: A full head of bright orange hair and not an ounce of grandmotherly kindness in her.
  • The Character Died with Him: Averted. Despite Marion Game's passing in early 2023, Huguette is still alive in season 15, just always conveniently off-screen. She also still appears in the credits.
  • Written-In Absence: From the 19th special, as the actress could not go shoot in Corsica for health reasons. Instead, Huguette has ran of and Raymond is looking for her.

José and Liliane

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sdm_2.png

New empty-nesters trying to relearn to live together now that their son has left the house.

  • Affectionate Nickname : "Lili" or "my Lili" and "my José".
  • Dead Sparks: At the beginning of the series, they have been married 20 years, and while they're fond of each other, the fire is gone. They try everything to rekindle the flame, but eventually accept that their marriage is a fairly happy one even if the passion of their youth has faded away.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While they love each other, they're the couple on the show with the most issues, to the point that their son forces them to go to a couple therapy seminar after they repeatedly try to kill each other in the 18th special (the violence is Played for Laughs, the impact on their relationship is not).

     José

Played By: Frédéric Bouraly

A city hall employee without much class or brains, but a kind heart.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: Not one to smoothly introduce people to his train of thought. It's hard to tell when his ideas are just wacky and when they're genius - the Ministry of Ecological Transition got really into his suggestion to use methane from cow farts to power buses.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: That being said, he can have his brilliant moments, in politics or in his family; they're just usually not the first thing on his tongue.
  • Papa Wolf: While he's a lot more relaxed than Liliane about their son growing up, he has been known to sternly rise to his defense when necessary.

     Liliane

Played By: Valérie Karsenti

A prissy, high-strung beautician who wishes for passion in her life.

  • '50s Hair: Often dresses in a style reminiscent of the 50's.
  • Behind Every Great Man: Pushed her husband to run for mayor and often supports and advises him. She is also the patroness of local artists, one of which even manages to snatch an exhibition in Paris thanks to her.
  • Control Freak: Very prissy and likes everything neat. She eventually learns to loosen up, but it takes her a while to figure out a middle ground.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Apparently, they have yet to make ear defenders that can parry the waves of her voice.
  • Doting Grandparent: Obsessed with her granddaughter, and desperate that she has to live on the other side of the globe with her parents.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father abandonned her and her mother forty years ago.
  • Doting Parent: Adores her son Manu, and misses him terribly now that he lives in China.
  • The Gambling Addict: She gets into a manic state when she gets a lifelong ban from casinos, and runs a clandestine gambling ring of her own.
  • Going Native: Starts fitting in extremely quickly with the Corsican locals in the 19th special.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Liliane herself was initially very wary of her daughter-in-law. She eventually warmed up to her after Bao gave birth to her granddaughter, and even calls her daughter by the sixteenth special. Now she's obnoxious in another way, refusing to leave her and the baby alone.
  • Women Drivers: Can't get out of her driveway without getting into an accident, it seems.

Cédric and Marion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sdm_3.png

Thirty-year old lovers trying to figure out where their relationship stands. Left after season 9.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Call each other "Poussin", a common pet name. A poussin is a chicken chick.
  • Odd Couple: He's neat, elegant and hardworking; she's ditzy, laid back and gaudy.
  • Put on a Bus: The actors left the show after season 9 to work on other projects. Their gimmick had run its course now that they were an established married couple.
  • Wedding Episode: Finally got hitched in the 12th special.

     Cédric

Played By: Loup-Denis Elion

An elegant, cultivated business executive who loves to remind people of these qualities.

     Marion

Played By: Audrey Lamy

A ditzy, fiery, often immature young woman who recently resumed her college education.

  • Alpha Bitch: Blonde, pretty, often disagreable and jealous, just loves being the head of a friend group and later her company.
  • Back to School: Returns to college in her early 30's to study psychology.
  • Bad Boss: She's various shades of awful with her employees.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Extremely successful when she dedicates herself to something. Unfortunately, she seldom does.
  • The Ditz
  • The Fashionista: Loves bright colors and complicated hairstyles. Her wedding dress included a full-glitter bodice and a feathery headdress.
  • Magnetic Hero: Abrasive as she can be, she's great at making friends.
  • Motor Mouth: Can only give someone the silent treatment for two seconds in a row.

Fabien and Emma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sdm_4.jpg

City mice who recently moved to the countryside after becoming the parents of a little girl. Arrived in season 3.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Call each other "Chaton", or "Kitten".
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: Fabien is the gentle touch to Emma's firm hand.
  • Going Native: When they first appeared, they were city mice only recently arrived in the countryside because it was a better place to have a family. However, they adapted fairly quickly, what with Emma not being afraid to get her hands dirty and Fabien having a poetic, pastoralisitc worldview. In the later seasons they are at a point where they don't hesitate to despise their newly rustic neighbor, derogatorily calling him "the Nantes guy", as if they weren't him 7 years prior.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Emma is tough, handsy, loves to DIY and isn't ever afraid to get into a fight. Fabien is much more creative and sensitive, and a more nurturing parent.
  • Meet Cute: Met at a gym, where Emma helped Fabien who was trapped under barbells.
  • Odd Couple: See Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy above.

     Fabien

Played By: David Mora

An anxiety-riddled teacher with a lot of sensitivity and culture.

  • Back to School: Inverted. He starts a sabbatical from his work as a teacher in season 13 to look for a new purpose.
  • Berserk Button: Takes down several armed militia soldiers when one of them tells him that educación es mierda.
  • Cool Teacher: Tries to be this with his middle-school students. Often fails, though he has his moments. Adults seem to see him that way when he helps Emma with her home improvement class, however.
  • Doting Parent: Obsessed with his baby girl, and would love to have a second child.
  • Heroic BSoD: Pretty much loses his mind when he learns that his parents have been divorced for five years and hid it from him.
  • Moustache de Plume: Gender-inverted. He's a fairly successful historical erotica writer, but publishes his short stories under the female name "Clotilde de Saint-Hilaire" to resonate better with his target audience. When Clotilde goes out in public, Emma plays her.
  • Non-Action Guy: He's a big softie, and far from the boldest lobster in the tank.
  • Weight Woe: He's put on some weight since his daughter was born, and isn't really happy about it.

     Emma

Played By: Anne-Elisabeth Blateau

A tough, no-nonsense home improvement store employee who tries to cultivate her many talents... or at least to find them.

  • Book Dumb: Never graduated from high school, and barely ever reads. She's also a flat-earther.
    • Characterization Marches On: Over the seasons, influenced by her partner, she becomes something of a bookworm, being shown to read a number of classics; however she resents him for this change, and refuses to let herself be dragged into other things like art history or classical music.
  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • Always has a break up letter and a resignation letter in her pocket. Doesn't plan to use either, but it just makes her feel free in case the urge ever comes.
    • To no-one's surprise, the 20th special reveals that she's an avid doomsday prepper, and that over the years she has built her family a mansion-like bunker beneath their house (with an AI assistant!), basing herself on "Kim Jong Un's blueprints".
  • Fiery Redhead
  • Former Teen Rebel
  • Hypocrite:
    • Acts like a Clingy Jealous Girl when Fabien's ex starts working with him, but has an obvious crush on her company-mandated English teacher.
    • Lampshaded by herself: she leans so far left that she's probably bent that way, but her behavior changed a lot since she was promoted to manager.
  • In-Series Nickname: Is known as "Emma la Rouge" ("Red Emma") in militant ecological leftist circles.
  • Married to the Job: Has been this since her promotion to manager. However, she's really upset about this and doesn't like not getting to spend as much time with her husband and daughter anymore.
  • Soapbox Sadie: For ecology. She used to live on a ZAD (a natural area protected from destruction by a settlement of activists), but was more into the culture of it than the fight. She once tries to set up a ZAD in a local field to protect endangered ladybugs... And also deter the construction of a rival home improvement store.

Philippe and Camille

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sdm_5.png

A pair forming a reconstructed family with a 20 year age gap. Arrived in season 7.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Camille calls Philippe "Doudou", which can be translated to "Plushie" or "Teddy Bear".
  • May–December Romance: When they first appear in the show, Camille is in her late twenties, and Philippe in his early fifties.
  • Meet Cute: Met at Philippe's pharmacy.
  • Odd Couple: He's a money-obsessed Control Freak with an aristocratic background; she's a vegan hippie who grew up on a fairground.

     Philippe

Played By: Grégoire Bonnet

A divorced father of two who loves nothing more than showing off his wealth.

  • Berserk Button: Never say anything against Tom Cruise in front of him.
  • Big Handsome Man: His weight is often the butt of jokes, but Camille makes it clear she's very much into his bear physique.
  • The Cape: Does vigiliantism in a very green suit as Super Petit Commerçantnote  to help local businesses in secret and deter malls and megastores from settling in.
  • Celeb Crush: On Tom Cruise.
  • Control Freak: Likes his fancy house neat with everything in its place.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Terrifies his flight instructor. He also loses his driver's license at one point.
  • Doting Grandparent: Loves his granddaughter and wants to spoil her - unfortunately, she does not love him back.
  • Parental Favoritism: While it was not always like this, he has come to prefer his daughter over his son in recent years, as Pauline blossomed into a confident young woman and Ulysse became a snivelly money shark.
  • Parent with New Paramour: Is now dating Camille after his divorce.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: He loves a good steak and is always upset when Camille tries to limit his intake for health reasons.
  • Sexy Sax Man: Attempts to be this. Cannot play the sax. At all.
  • Upper-Class Twit: He loves his money, showing off his money, and bragging about his money.

     Camille

Played By: Amélie Etasse

A positive, active young woman, involved in many social and environmental causes.

  • Action Girl: Very sporty and dedicated. She is a yoga teacher and captain of a local football team.
  • Cool Aunt: Takes in her nephew Dylan in season 13, and does not mind allowing him a lot of leeway, since standards are pretty low in her family.
  • Granola Girl: Vegan, environmentally conscious, left-leaning, yoga-practicing, boho-wearing... She fits the title to a tee, though she sometimes gives in to Philippe's bourgeois tendencies.
  • Good Stepmother: On great terms with both of Philippe's children; after all they're not much younger than her. She helps Philippe stay grounded about Pauline's homosexuality and tries to help Ulysse figure out what he wants in life (when what he wants is not to flirt with her). Pauline even asks her to be her daughter's godmother, for all their shared values.
  • Likes Older Men: Clearly.
  • Not with Them for the Money: Doesn't care for Philippe's money, though her friends think it did change her a little.
  • Soapbox Sadie: Loves to defend social and environmental causes.

Léo and Leslie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sdm_6.png

Recent college graduates trying to make a living together. Arrived in season 10.

     Léo

Played By: Vinnie Dargaud

A technology-obsessed gym mouse who grew up in a wealthy family.

  • Ambiguously Bi: He is obsessed with the male physique, according to Leslie, and not above flirting with male friends to annoy her. He also has a "LGBT" sticker on his laptop.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Eventually revealed to be Reunionese and mixed black and white.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Has an elaborate skincare routine and knows how to use an eyelash curler.
  • Heritage Disconnect: His father wants him to take over the family estate on Reunion. He does not care to go back.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Takes the fight against homophobia very seriously, but mostly because of this trope. Pretty much confirmed to be bisexual in season 15.
  • Lovable Jock: Always working out, and very proud of his body.
  • Momma's Boy: Leslie compares him to Oedipus at one point.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His full name is Léonard.

Jalil and Louise

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sdm_7.png

A couple of thirty-year-olds trying to figure out a proper life-work balance. Arrived in season 13.

  • Career Versus Man: Averted. Jalil is 100% supportive of Louise's ambition of opening a restaurant and left his apartment, his job and his friends to help her take over his father's old place.
  • High-School Sweethearts: They have known each other since middle school; they didn't start dating until after graduation, however.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Jalil is significantly taller than Louise. He never knows how high to hang applications as a result.
  • In-Universe Nickname: A few, but Jalil notably calls Louise "chéché" (short for "chérie", meaning "honey").
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To Cédric and Marion. They are in a more adult relationship than Léo and Leslie, their gimmick is focused on their work life, and they even used to live in the 19th arrondissement of Paris like Cédric and Marion.

     Jalil

Played By: Ryad Baxx

A responsible, loving firefighter with a short fuse.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Received the Medal of Valor for saving an entire family from a fire.
  • Book Dumb: Downplayed, but thinks a street painting of Simone Veil depicts his neighbor Mrs Da Costa.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Played for Laughs. Goes into a Tranquil Fury when he finds out that Louise bought the garbagemen's calendar rather than the firemen's.
  • Generation Xerox: According to his father, he is just like his mother: same eyes, same shy smile, same temper.
  • Face of a Thug: As sweet as it comes, but he has a severe case of resting bitch face.

  • Married to the Job: As a firefighter, he has to be on call whenever necessary.
  • Missing Mom: His mother died when he was rather young.

A passionate but introverted young chef trying to open her own restaurant.

  • Cunning Linguist: She and Samia speak in German when they don't want Jalil to understand their conversations.
  • Hates Small Talk: Refuses to join the firefighters' girlfriends' Whatsapp group because she finds their conversations boring and obnoxious.
  • I Work Alone: While she appreciates her father-in-law giving her his old restaurant to take over, she hates how he tries to help her run it, or even run it in her place.
  • Shipper on Deck: Downplayed. She gives her father-in-law seduction advice, but mostly because he asked.
  • Young Entrepreneur: Is currently trying to open her own restaurant.
