The Polanian Republic

The Republic is a large agricultural country that is trying to maintain its status and territory while dealing with its aggressive neighbors.
    Anna Kos

Once a simple village girl, the occupation of Polanian territory after the end of the Great War led to Anna clashing with Rusviet soldiers. After a series of battles Anna eventually joined the Polanian Resistance led by her uncle Lech. A potent sniper and renowned as a cunning yet compassionate leader, she specializes in scouting and hunting infantry with her deadly rifle and the help of her powerful brown bear Wojtek.
  • Action Girl: Anna is a crack shot with her rifle. She is also strong willed enough to stand up to much more experienced soldiers and doesn't hesitate once battle starts.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Downplayed; she's sixteen years old and is not the official commander of any Polanian regiments - the troops she leads are either detachments from her uncle's resistance or she is working under Michal Sikorski's command as an irregular.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Though she will not hesitate to fight, several of her victory quotes after engagements are asking for forgiveness for the lives she had taken or wishing that it did not have to be that way.
  • The Beastmaster: Anna Kos is accompanied into battle with her pet Brown Bear Wojtek, who carries medical supplies inside of his saddle and provides healing to nearby units.
  • Friendly Sniper: Gets along well with the Polanian and later Saxonian troops she works with while also being a crack shot.
  • Good Is Not Soft: While she is all-around pleasant, she apparently had no qualms with simply assassinating Zubov when it seemed like a conventional battle would not get to him in time. Sadly, she was captured in the attempt.
  • Jeanne d'Archétype: Invoked both by the Polanian faction trailer and her uncle, and lampshaded by Polanian soldiers that encountered her in the second chapter of their campaign.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Wotjek the brown bear, based on an actual bear of the same name who served in the Polish II Corps during World War II.
  • Magnetic Hero: Across her journey as a member of the Polanian Resistance, Anna finds herself gaining more and more influence among the Resistance - by the time they reach Kolno, they consider her a leader of the same par as her uncle - a highly decorated commander from the Great War!
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: It can be hard to tell in gameplay, as there's a degree of Units Not to Scale, but when seen standing next to other characters in cutscenes it becomes clear she's tiny in comparison despite being as dangerous as any of them.
  • Rebel Leader: Anna starts the Polanian campaign as lone fighter but by the end she is the de facto leader of the Polanian Resistance after her uncle is killed by Zubov.
  • Taught by Experience: She's the only hero unit who is not now nor has ever been an official member of any military and thus has received no training beyond a little light tutoring in shooting by her brother.
  • The Hero: Of the Polanian campaign. The campaign's main focus is on her hero's journey from simple peasant girl to leader of La Résistance.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Downplayed. While she reacts with horror to her first kills at Zalesie and is audibly tearing up from it, she manages to focus on the task at hand and does not express much more of this outside of Apologetic Attacker above.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives this twice: first to her uncle after he decides to arm the people of Kolno to wage war against the Rusviet despite knowing full well they stand no chance, and then to her brother Janek for what he did as part of being undercover.

    Lech Kos

A devoted patriot of Polania, Lech is a veteran of the Great War who led his men against Rusviet aggression. After the end of the war, Lech is left furious over the terms of the treaty between his country and Rusviet, which saw Polania surrendering over a third of its northeastern territory to Rusviet occupation. From then on, Lech refused his government's orders to stand down and began waging a guerrilla war against the Rusviets. However, his actions comes to blows with his pacifistic brother-in-law Piotr and his fellow Polanians who abide to the treaty.
  • Ace Custom: Lech pilots a gorilla-like mech armed with a large-bore cannon with a huge folding blade, and a large hammer resembling to a meat mallet for anti-armor melee blows.
  • Big Damn Heroes: His postwar introduction is a loud "FOR POLANIA!" as he leads a veritable tide of mechs and infantry against Zubov's forces, saving Anna and his men pinned down there.
  • Cool Uncle: Besides encouraging a young Anna and Janek to learn how to fight, he seems to have been this for the latter during the Great War if the letter Janek's codex is anything to go by.
  • Last Stand: Whether he himself intended to die in the process or not is unclear, but he fully intended for Kolno to become this.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Had shades of this about Liliana Kos according to her diary (an entry of which is in Lech's codex), disliking Piotr, though it seems to be more about Piotr being an engineer outside of Polania than anything and none of this animosity is expressed to his niece and nephew.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: Is fully willing to arm civilians knowing that they will be slaughtered simply to provoke a more widespread uprising. He is also fully willing to kill his own niece to make a martyr out of her rather than allow her to spoil his plan.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Lech is told to his face by Zubov that his uprising in Kolno had played into Fenris' plan to create another war as his actions violated the treaty and giving the Rusviet Union its casus belli to fully invade the Republic. Lech, angered by being manipulated, made a futile assault on Zubov and is shot dead.

    Michal Sikorski

A commander of a Polanian army who finds himself pulled into the new conflicts by the actions of Lech Kos and the Polanian Resistance.
  • Badass Normal: Relative to other heroes, anyways. In a world of modern firearms and giant mechs, he still uses a saber from horseback in melee combat and is actually quite capable at dishing out the damage.
  • Big Damn Heroes: On both ends of the trope as the story progresses.
  • Cavalry Officer: His role, leading a squadron of cavalry into battle as well as being the commander of the regular Polanian forces involved in the story.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Given the circumstances he's willing to make common cause with Gunter von Duisburg but there's clearly a lot of tension from the two being on opposite sides of a bloody battle during the Great War.
  • Suave Sabre: As befitting his role as the Cavalry Officer, he carries a sword that can cut down infantry when using his charge ability.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Forced into this by both the unfavorable treaty that leaves the Polanian government unable to help Kolno and Lech's actions being the Rusviet excuse for the blockade. He ultimately chooses good - not because he agreed with Lech, but because of Anna trying to actually save the people of Kolno, and then pursues the Rusviet forces into the Balkans despite the borders it would require crossing.

    Janek Kos

Anna's older brother by five years, who ships out to the Great War at the end of the tutorial after teaching her how to shoot. He becomes one of the casualties. In truth, Janek survived but had his identity swapped with that of Victor Popov so that he could be rebuilt into a super soldier for Rusviet. For tropes applying to "Victor", see his folder below.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He certainly cares a lot for Anna, utterly annhilating the local bullies after they ambush her with snowballs and tries to use this as a reason to not teach Anna to shoot before relenting.
  • Friendly Sniper: Was the one who taught Anna how to shoot a rifle and a nice guy, even during the war.
  • Home by Christmas: Seems to take this in, though his despondent tone when telling Anna he would "only be gone for a few months" suggests he knew otherwise.

    Piotr Kos

Anna and Janek's father, an engineer who makes his living in Zalesie by repairing mechs, having come to his wife's home village after her death to raise their children.

Previously, he was Piotr Dybowski, one of Telsa's engineers and had helped create the automachines that mechs are based on. He left after a Fenris attack on the Factory in 1905 and Tesla's increasing paranoia afterwards.


  • Artificial Limb: A relatively lowkey example that is not immediately visible to the player until he removes his jacket during the attack on Zalesie. It is a piece of Tesla tech and contains a transponder so that he is recognized as friendly by its automated defenses.
  • Bungled Suicide: While not immediately apparent, this seems to be what he was trying to do when Zubov caught him if what happened to Heinrich later is any indication.
  • The Maiden Name Debate: Took on his wife's surname when he left the Factory, mostly as a way to both hide himself and protect his children from those looking to access Tesla's factory.
  • Noodle Incident: Knew Zubov by name and vice versa, though only as Piotr Dybowski.
  • Shock and Awe: A benefit of his arm, enabling him to outright disable even Zubov's Ace Custom.

The Rusviet Tsardom

The Tsardom is huge country that has unmatched industrial and population potential. Unfortunately, the Rusviet's suffered dearly in the Great War and the country is on the brink of revolution.
    Olga Morosova

Olga Morozova is a hero of the Rusviet Union. She is the head of security and one of Tsar Nicholas's confidantes. A stealthy saboteur, she is accompanied by her Siberian tiger, Changa. Unlike many, Olga is aware of the danger of Fenris. She is willing to do anything and work with anyone if it means bringing Fenris down and protecting her nation.
  • Action Girl: Olga is a highly trained operative who wields a submachine gun and sword in combat.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Her name is Olga Romanova in Scythe.
  • The Beastmaster: Like Anna Kos, Olga is often accompanied by her Siberian Tiger Changa, who often serves as her mount.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Changa, a freaking Siberian Tiger.
  • Male Gaze: Janek casually gazes at her rear after their scuffle. No comment is made of it, though.
    Janek: "I... noticed you."
  • Stealth Expert: Olga is well trained in stealth. She is often appearing out of nowhere and sneaking up to and away from enemies.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While Olga is technically the main hero of the Rusviet campaign she actually shares screen time with Janek in the beginning and is more of a supporting character in his story. She then vanishes from the Rusviet campaign about halfway through with Janek becoming the sole POV character for the rest of it. Ironically she ends up playing the same role in the Saxony campaign when she appears about halfway into it and plays a supporting role to Saxony hero and POV character Gunter.

     Lev Alekseevich Zubov

A decorated colonel of the Rusviet Army, who by the time of the story has been leading a campaign across Polania to crush Lech Kos' rebel forces while also attacking Anna's home village in pursuit of her father. As it turns out, he is doing this not for Mother Rusviet but rather on behalf of Fenris.
  • Ace Custom: He pilots a unique mech that seems to be a heavily customised and powered up version of the Serf model.
  • Affably Evil: Despite nonchalantly ordering civilians to be killed to ensure there are no witnesses or mocking the Kos family at various points, he is quite personable to his subordinates and values both their opinions and indulges in answering their question.
  • Bad Boss: Despite his general politeness to his minions he doesn't remotely value their lives. He's willing to send several waves of men and mechs to die against his new cyborg just to test him out. Later he's willing to send a mech pilot to die against Tesla's lightning defences that he was already well aware of and had a means to disable right next to him seemingly just to spare himself a few seconds of explaining how the defences work.
  • Blood Knight: Gains health back when attacking enemies in melee, nominally due to his bloodlust.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: The heroes of the various countries all have it out for him due to the various war crimes he has committed and orchestrated, all in the name of Fenris. However Olga needs him alive because he is the only other known member of the organization that could reveal the treachery of Fenris to the rest of the world, and that by interrogating him they would track down who else in the worlds' various governments are also a part of Fenris.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: While Colonel Zubov serves as the central main antagonist during the events of all three Campaigns, he is only one of the lowest on the command chain in Fenris, and takes orders from Rasputin.
  • Evil Is Hammy: He certainly is happy to play to the trope - particularly when it comes to mocking those against him.
  • Humans Are Warriors: Mixed with a touch of Humans Are Bastards, but this is his justification for what he does: humanity's wars will eventually destroy it, but until then he will do what it takes to make sure his side has the power to survive a bit longer. How much of this is real and how much of this is just a selling point to get Victor to join Fenris is unclear, though.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Discretion is indeed the better part of valor for him and is happy to just cut his losses and move on when on the losing end of a battle with the Polanian or Saxonian heroes.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Mocks this after shooting Lech in the head.
    "What did people ever see in him? Was it this 'never give up' bullshit?"
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Pulls this off regularly after being defeated. All the more impressive considering two of these are done in his oversized mech.
  • We Have Reserves: Despite being Affably Evil, he will still sacrifice a perfectly working mech just to demonstrate to Victor below what Telsa's defenses are like.

    Victor Popov

A man rebuilt by Rusviet with Tesla technology after the war. Victor is the loyal cyborg of Zubov, a product of the Colonel's research into Tesla's technology and his right-hand-man after his reawakening as a cyborg.

In reality he is Anna's older brother Janek, who was thought to died in the war. But, had his identity swapped with that of a soldier called Victor by Olga and was revived by the Rusviet under mistaken impression he is Victor and is only following Zubov to gain his trust until he can get his vengeance. Tropes here apply to Janek after his transformation - for tropes before, see his entry under Polania.


  • Arm Cannon: Part of his transformation had his right arm replace by a railgun that also acts as a lightning cannon.
  • Heroic BSoD: He could not stop Zubov from ordering his men to massacre an entire village without compromising his status as a mole. As a result, he is left very horrified and guilt-ridden, and has more reasons to kill Zubov.
  • Man in the Machine: The armor he wears is the only thing keeping him alive. And removing it will kill him. At least without Tesla's help.
  • The Mole: Works for Zubov to gain his trust.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: After the accident in St. Petersburg that nearly killed him, Olga managed to save him and give him a fake identity so that he could be taken in by the Rusviet scientists and transformed into a cyborg to save his life.
    Olga: "Do You know how many strings I had to pull, getting you into a program I'm not supposed to know exists?"
  • You Killed My Father: His primary motivation for wanting to kill Colonel Zubov is that he was responsible for killing his father.

    Tsar Nicholas of Rusviet

Current ruler of the Rusviet Tsardom, Nicholas was the one who opened negotiations to end the Great War after receiving a letter from Nichola Tesla about Fenris. He immediately acts against them, only to find his life imperiled.
  • Historical Domain Character: Seems to be based on Nicholas II, the last Tsar before the Russian Revolution and Anastasia is referenced in Olga's codex entry. However, in appearance he resembles his historical grandfather, Nicolas I.
  • King Incognito: He ends up wearing peasant clothes to hide his identity from the revolutionaries while traveling through his war-torn nation to St. Petersburg.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: With the scandal of the St. Petersburg attack making a scapegoat of Olga, he went along with it by firing her... so he could give her free reign to investigate the real perpetrators. Sadly, he unwittingly does this in front of the man responsible, rendering it almost moot.
    • In the Rusviet Revolution DLC, Nicholas grows to empathize with the revolutionaries' motives as he realizes that he is responsible for ignoring his people's plights and the atrocities committed against them by his own soldiers who were supposedly loyal to him. He swears to bring reforms to Rusviet and bridging peace with the revolutionaries. Unfortunately he is killed by Rasputin and Rusviet falls under Fenris' control.

The Saxonian Empire

The Empire is one of the most powerful countries in Europe. They boast powerful industries and modern factories in addition to a strong military tradition. They were on the losing side in the Great War and many powerful figures within the Empire secretly oppose the Emperor’s appeasement policies.
    Commander Gunter von Duisburg

Gunter is a decorated soldier and veteran of many wars including the Great War. Once a much respected commander with the ear of the Kaiser himself, an incident during the war led to a falling out with the royal family and his retirement. Often close behind him are his two frightening dire wolfs Nacht and Tag.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Acknowledges this with the Kaiser the night after a shouting match over the start of the war, where Gunther admits he wanted the Great War as well. Neither of them had realized just what that would mean thanks to all that changed.
  • Commanding Coolness: Gunter is technically a commander and led a key section of the front during the Great War with the Saxionian crown prince under his command.
  • Cool Old Guy: He was far from young at the start of the Great War the better part of a decade before the main events of the game but is still able to take on multiple opponents singlehandedly and lead armies to victory.
  • Frontline General: Gunter didn't just manage his section of the front and sit behind a desk while his soldiers fought in the Great War. He was on the front lines fighting with his men from his mech Brunhilde. He has also been shown fighting on foot while others pilot mech in his stead.
  • Hand Cannon: His main weapon is a single shot grenade launcher capable of destroying a tree, which he wields in one hand without difficulty. It is recognisable enough that he becomes a Scapegoat when Wilhelm used it to murder his father.
  • Meaningful Name: Not for Gunter, but rather his pet wolves, Tag and Nacht, being German for 'Day' and 'Night' respectively.
  • Mythical Motifs: Possibly unintentional but he has something of Odin about him, being an old but still vital and strong Germanic man who can be both a warrior and a thinker and owns two wolves. He also opposes Fenris.
  • Noble Wolf: It's one thing to have a pet wolf. Gunter has two, Tag and Nacht.
  • Power Fist: His other weapon is an armoured mechanical gauntlet known as the iron fist, which contains a bayonet and is capable of destroying armour.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Gunter is left bitter and cynical from fighting in the Great War after having witnessed the grim reality of modern warfare and being silenced by the Kaiser from reporting Prince Wilhelm's war crimes and taking the blame for it instead.
  • Old Soldier: Gunter is a distinguished veteran of not only the Great War but of the many wars the Kaiser waged during Saxionia's rise to power.
  • Refusal of the Call: Gunter is very reluctant to help Kaiser Friedrich in finding Fenris agents in Saxony as he believes the Kaiser is avoiding his responsibility for causing the Great War by placing the blame on Fenris no different from how Kaiser Friedrich used him as a scapegoat for Prince Wilhelm's war crimes. However, he eventually agrees to help after being forced on the run when he is framed for the Kaiser's murder.
  • The Scapegoat: Gunter is forced by the Kaiser to taking the blame for Prince Wilhelm's war crimes in order to prevent tarnishing the royal family. This completely eroded the friendship between Gunter and Friedrich.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: It's show early in the campaign that Gunter is haunted by the brutality of the Great War. He has difficult dreams of the various battles and even when he is awake his mind flashed back to the war. Despite this he has maintained his sense of honor and sanity, unlike Wilhelm.
  • Undying Loyalty: He both displays this and receives it where his subordinates are concerned. When his supporters are rounded up after Wilhelm frames him his first though is to rescue them, despite his at the time total lack of supporting forces and their first thought upon being freed is to take up arms to defend him.

    Prince Wilhelm of Saxony

Saxony's Crown Prince and only child of Kaiser Friedrich.
  • Ace Custom: Wilhelm pilots a more humanoid mech that resembles a gold plated knight.
  • Adapted Out: He's an only child while in real life both of the Wilhelms he's based on had multiple siblings, both brothers and sisters. This is significant as his growing insanity would have likely otherwise led to the Kaiser picking another son as his heir.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The entire Great War is one for Prince Wilhelm. Wilhelm actually started out as a nice guy who got along very well with Gunter and cared deeply about the welfare of his fellow Saxonians. As the war dragged on and the casualties mounted he started to become unhinged. Seeing so many of his countrymen die for so little gains resulted in Wilhelm becoming bitter, angry, and frustrated with Gunter. Eventually after a difficult battle the casualty numbers came in and he snapped killing defenseless POW's. Since then he has been an unstable, violent, and paranoid man willing to commit horrific acts to protect Saxony from those he see's as enemies.
  • Historical Domain Character: He is based on the real Prince Wilhelm who led two German armies in the First World War, though as the son of Kaiser Freidrich he actually seems to be that Wilhelm's father, the real life Kaiser Wilhelm II.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: The real Kaiser Wilhelm attempted to curry Hitler's favour to come back to power after losing his throne after WW1 but when rebuffed quietly remained in exile in the Netherlands. Here, Wilhelm developed an intense hatred against Rusviets throughout the Great War and committing atrocities against them such as launching a gas attack and personally executing prisoners of war. After growing very unsatisfied with his father's tenuous peace treaty with Polania and Rusviet, he murdered the Kaiser, takes the throne, and framing Gunter.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: How Wilhelm portrays himself and clearly thought the war would prove in him. His unit is even called the Knights of Saxony! However, things do not go according to plan…
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Despite Gunther's objections, Wilhelm leads his troops from the front both during the Great War and in hunting down Gunther after framing the commander for Kaiser Fredrich's murder.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: It's clear when you meet him in the present that the war left Wilhelm unstable. He started the war thinking it would be a grand adventure but as the war dragged on and the casualties mounted he was pushed more to the edge until he snapped. This is in contrast to how Gunter deals with the events of the war.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The murder of his father plunged all of Saxony into a dictatorship controlled solely by him, just as Fenris had planned. And that they didn't even need to lift a finger against Saxony to make it possible.
  • Warrior Prince: Participated in the front lines alongside with Gunter. This was part of a plan by his father to ensure that Wilhelm would be accepted as a leader when the time came.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Wilhelm initially saw fighting in the Great War to be an exciting adventure, but quickly becomes horrified by the losses of his men and deeply prejudiced against Saxony's enemies, specifically the Rusviets.

    Frieda Ruete

Pilot and mechanic of Brunhilde, a mech that once belonged to her father and was driven by Gunther during the Great War.
  • Ambigously Brown: Since her portrait shows her with much lighter skin color and because some parts of her face (particularly around her lips) appear lighter, some believe she's actually meant to be a white woman who's constantly covered in soot or oil from tinkering with Brunhilde. However, her facial features are distinctively African.
  • Awesome Personnel Carrier: Brunhilde is mobile fort which looks like a headless AT-AT that can ferry infantry in addition to its formidable onboard batteries of both light and heavy cannons which the infantry helps reload.
  • Blood Knight: VERY downplayed: while most of the roster have some level of excitement at victory, Frieda explicitly notes how exhilerating it is. On the other hand, she is also shaken by her first few experiences and takes fighting seriously rather than reveling in it.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Her father, like Gunter and Willhelm, was also affected by the war but unlike them he couldn't live with it and took his life.
  • Sassy Black Woman: Though she certainly gives Gunther some light-hearted snark, she primarily adds levity to the otherwise grim Saxonian campaign.
  • Wrench Wench: While not formally allowed to become an engineer due to Saxony's conservative views on women's rights, her father taught her all she needed to know and is able to repair Brunhilde mid-combat as long as it is not mobile.

     Kaiser Friedrich III of Saxony

Current ruler of the Empire of Saxony, though getting on in his years and besieged from all sides from the discontent of the Great War's aftermath.

The Factory

An independent city-state known for its advanced technology and industry. Founded and led by the renown inventor Nikola Tesla, the Factory is responsible for mass producing and supplying mechs to the world to improve agriculture and industry. However, Tesla closed its borders from the outside in response to the world's governments using mechs in warfare.

Nikola Tesla is a famed inventor and genius who is responsible for creating the mechs and other advanced technologies that shaped the world. However, Tesla is appalled over his automachines, which were initially used for improving people's lives, are repurposed into destructive weapons of war by the world's nations. Since then Tesla refused to cooperate with governments or industry and he permanently closed the Factory from the outside world to prevent his more advanced technologies from being misused.
  • Cool Old Guy: Assuming he shares the real Tesla's date of birth he's 63/64 during the game yet doesn't blink when faced with Zubov's army.
  • Historical Domain Character: He's obviously based on the real Nikola Tesla but with a very different personal history.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Tesla lost his faith in humanity after being left in dismay over how his creations were being used in war by the world's governments. This is exacerbated by Fenris trying to steal his technology.
  • No Man Should Have This Power: He swears off that his technologies only worsen the world under the hands of the world's nations for war and conquest. As a result, Tesla constructed the Icarus Protocol to destroy the Factory and ensuring that no one will use his technology ever again.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: However, Tesla eventually gets better when he hears an inspiring speech from Anna, Olga, and Gunter that people from the three nations, who have worked together forcing Fenris to flee from the Factory and destroying the Icarus Protocol, can overcome their differences and work together for a common goal. Thus Tesla and his newfound allies work together to defend the Factory and continue the fight against Fenris.

Fenris

A secretive and shadowy organization whose goals is undermining and destabilizing the world's governments by orchestrating wars, fermenting political turmoil and installing their members in the high echelons of said governments, and seizing powerful technology.

  • The Bad Guy Wins: In the Rusviet Revolution DLC, Fenris succeed in taking over Rusviet after Rasputin captures and kills Tsar Nicholas.
  • Meaningful Name: Fenris as an organization takes its name from the wolf Fenris, who played a part in orchestrating the events of Ragnarök. Just as their leader revealed that the current Post-War Climate was directly a result of their actions in the assassination of an Archduke that kickstarted the Great War in the first place, and seek to cause even more destruction and death afterwards.
  • Nebulous Evil Organization: All that is known about Fenris at this point is that they plan on taking over the world and spreading anarchy in any way to achieve that ends, and that one of their targets happen to be Nikola Tesla; who they plan on stealing technology from.

In the aftermath of The Great War, the world is in chaos and borders are being redrawn. Usonia wants to make the 20th century “America’s Century” while an old enemy in the shadows tries to seize power.

    In General 
  • Allohistorical Allusion: In real life, apologists for the Confederate States of America often argue that their secession was motivated by "federal authority overstepping states' rights" rather than the impending abolition of slavery.note  In Iron Harvest's Alternate Timeline, the war actually was about state's rights, since slavery was abolished shortly after the nation was founded - it was instead between the West and East, as frontier territories seceded over increasing federal interference in their affairs.
  • Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Usonia is a major case of this considering that aircraft technology doesn't feature much in the three factions of Iron Harvest to the point of near non-existence. The fact that Usonia is seen fielding a large fleet of airships indicate a turning point in the conflict during the DLC.
  • Cool Airship: Their introductory trailer features these very prominently, indicating that Usonia has the single-largest air force in the entire world that all fill in different categories from transports, fighter craft and even helicopters.
    • Indeed, Usonia in general was the first to really crack airship technology en masse, with several of their standard mech options being aircraft instead of walkers.
  • Death from Above: Fitting for their DLC coming with the introduction of air units. The DLC introduces several new air units for Usonia, including the Samson (an airship that uses six Attack Drones to drop bombs on their enemies), and the Revere (which combats air and ground units with a barrage of rockets).
  • Eagleland: Red White and Blue colors? Check. Eagle motifs? Check. Radios' broadcasting Over There in a loud and patriotic manner? MAJOR CHECK! Usonia easily fits the beautiful, but the lore notes that it could easily become the boorish and the fine line between the two is one of their story beats. With their first mission having them invade Alaska, under Rusviet rule, to push them out of America in order to protect the interests of Usonian corporations whose property is being siezed by the revolutionaries.
    • Their musical theme is also right chipper compared to the other factions, with brass instruments, snare drums, and "Yankee-Doodle"-esk whistling.
  • The Engineer: The Usonian eco suit, the Ward, is uniquely able to heal/repair all units, either directly in the case of buildings and mechs or indirectly by setting up aid stations for infantry. It can also tear apart mechs in close range, meaning it isn’t totally helpless in combat.
  • It's Raining Men: One of Usonia's special units is the paratrooper, which can drop anywhere on the map.
  • Outside-Context Problem: The major superpowers at play following the Great War consist of Saxony, Polania, and Rusviet who all reside on Europa. Usonia however...
  • Politically Correct History: Zig-Zagged. On the one hand, Usonia is said to have abolished slavery and racial discrimination within ten years of its founding, roughly a century earlier than the real-life United States, and for the most part its citizens truly embody the nation's ideals of liberty and equality. On the other, it's made equally clear that the Usonian government is far more pragmatic and hypocritical than they let on - the nation still horrifically oppressed and abused its Native American population, and by the time of "Operation Eagle" Imperialist sentiments are becoming widespread in military and political circles.

A heroic, brave and ambitious captain serving the Union of Usonia, hailed as a hero and even considered by his superiors as their "best man". He leads his troops on the frontlines in an advanced Amercan armored assault exo-suit.
  • A Father to His Men: As if his Establishing Character Moment wasn't enough. He's got great camaraderie with his troops and regularly makes sure that they check up on the wounded after battle and never leaving a man behind if he gets separated with his troops.
  • BFG: He wields an chainsaw-gripped autocannon when fighting in his suit.
  • The Captain: Well duh.
  • Captain Patriotic: He's essentially what would happen if Steve Rogers fought in an exosuitnote  rather than with his mighty shield, and is also very much a poster boy.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first act in the DLC's Campaign intro, has him saving one of his soldiers that got tangled in their parachute. Even if he had to discard his own just to catch up and make the rescue easier. Establishing him as a man who staunchly values the life of others over his own.
  • Expy: As noted up above, he's basically what would happen if Steve Rogers ran around in Power Armor and also happened to be their world's version of the famous Lawrence of Arabia. Speaking of the power armor, its large size (especially the chest) alongside its Shoulders of Doom, really make him look like a member of the Adeptus Astartes.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has a neatly combed blonde hair and is shown to be a pretty good man overall. Cares for his troops, looks after his allies and is against Usonia invading Arabia to take its oil.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: While his armor does have a few exposed spots, it's got quite a bit of armor all around, especially around the chest. ...Except for the head.note 
  • The Hero: Is the main playable hero of the Operation Eagle DLC.
  • Noodle Incident: According to his codex, William was a prankster while attending Washington Academy and got suspended for releasing livestock into the girls' dormitory.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Even if his troops are separated from him, he will make sure he can reunite with them. Alongside that he regularly makes sure that the wounded are taken care of after battle and that they never leave anyone behind.
  • Powered Armor: William charges into the battlefield in his own cutting edge exosuitnote , which has a enough armor to protect the Captain from most harm and also comes with a jetpack. He can also bail out of it and turn it into a stationary turret thanks to his ability to control it remotely as well.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Does not have a very good relationship with his father, who puts huge amounts of pressure on him to succeed. He soon finally has enough of him, after the admiral betrayed Sita and sided with King Khalid to ensure that Usonia establishes their influence over Arabia.

    Admiral George Mason

The commander of Usonia's Air Mobile Corps who desired to make his nation a superpower. He is an admiral of a colossal floating battleship, he can traverse any terrain and sends death from above.


  • Ambition Is Evil: A conversation with his son implies that George either wants to become president of Usonia or have his son take said position, though it isn't so much a power grab as it is George being a Knight Templar for Usonia's interests.
  • America Takes Over the World: George wanted his country to be a reckoning superpower and taking over oil-producing regions to benefit Usonia's economy and powering their automachines under the pretense of "liberty", and even stating outright of making the 20th century "America's century".
  • Archnemesis Dad: Slowly becomes this for his son thanks to their differing ideals.
  • Cool Airship: George enters the battlefield in the Queen Langley, the largest airship in the game, armed with two pairs of naval guns and four flamethrowers in the front to burn any ground forces in front of it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While his motives are suspect, he is correct that to do nothing while Rusviet revolutionaries kill American citizens and seize American factories in Alaska would reflect badly on a nation that prides itself on "leading by example", it's a strong enough argument that it even allows him to convince the president, who he's at odds with, to okay the Alaskan mission.
  • Meaningful Name: George's flagship is a Benedict-Class Sky Battleship, which is named after Benedict Arnold who was known for plotting to betray the American Colonial military during the American Revolution. George ultimately turned on Princess Sita and the Free Tribes after secretly making a treaty with King Khalid.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: George tells to his son that standing on the American principles of liberty and justice isn't enough to make the Union a world power.
    "The world will benefit from our principles but standing on principle isn't enough. Neither are the latest automachines or all of Arabia's oil. More than anything, we need a president who will do what is required to build something greater, a new world order. We'll make the 20th century America's century."

    Princess Sita

Sita al Hadid is a hero of Arabia, though she assists forces of Usonia. She is the leader of roaming Bedouin tribes in a fight for freedom from foreign powers that see her home as a prize to be taken. She is armed with a Jezail and assisted by her pet falcon Haytham.
  • A Dog Named "Cat": Her falcon's name means "Young Eagle".
  • Breakout The Museum Piece: Her main weapon of choice is a custom Jezail, a common type of black-powerd musket originating in the Middle East. As expected it takes quite a lot for her to reload another shot, but does decent damage.
  • Friendly Sniper: She's an eagle-eyed princess armed with a musket. She provides cover for both her and the friendly Usonia forces.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Per Iron Harvest tradition, hers is a devoted falcon named Haytham.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She wears an elaborate purple hijab appropriate for royalty.
  • Rebellious Princess: She is the leader of Arabia's Free Tribes against her tyrannical uncle King Khalid, who murdered her father in order to secure a treaty with Saxony. She also wants to ensure that her country to be independent from the imperialistic western nations and move her society forward from the old traditions.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She takes to the field as a Frontline General of her forces.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sita is upset with William under the belief that he betrayed her and the Free Tribes after his father Admiral Mason sided with King Khalid. Fortunately, the misunderstanding is cleared up by William and Gunter.
