UsefulNotes.Criminals. Issue reported and discussion started at ATT. Discussion moved to Short-term Projects.

It seems we agree that the page can't stay as is.

Two main suggestions:

  • cut the page entirely
  • remove problematic entries

Either scale back to stock criminals i.e. Historical Domain Characters or delete the page. Either works for me.

Contains 20% less fat than the leading value brand!

I think we should cut it; most of what’s valuable is covered by the useful note pages of the specific people or by tropes like Historical Domain Character.

I'm leaning toward cut, but limiting it to historical figures would be fine. Someone suggested limiting the list to people whose pages are in the Useful Notes namespace.

Neglected to mention this, but if we keep the page but limit its scope, it would probably be best to lock it. As I mentioned in the ATT query, it started out as a list of historical criminals, and the gossip came later.

Restrict to actual historical people with useful notes pages on the wiki.

I originally favoured the cut (as I said on the ATT), but I changed my mind: listing Historical Domain Characters with Useful Notes pages will be fine and it's always good if we can 'salvage' a page.

Locking the page after it's done is a good idea though perhaps we might try a commented-out note for editors first. Locked pages are for the worst offenders and things that keep attracting constant misuse or vandalism.

[up]If we have a commented-out note instead of locking the page (which sounds like a good idea), I think it should be as prominent as the one on NeverLiveItDown.Real Life.

Anyway, should we have a crowner for this?

Edit: Went ahead and made one since only two options have been suggested.

Judging by that crowner, there's a clear majority consensus of simply keeping the page, but restricting it to notable historical criminals with articles only in the Useful Notes namespace.

[up][up]Anything not in the Useful Notes namespace needs to stay off the page if we keep it. The first folder would be fine, since those are all Useful Notes pages.

[up][up][up]The first two folders all have people we can keep on this list. On the other hand, should we allow O. J. Simpson to stay there? His whole reputation in the media and pop culture is that of "former celebrity overshadowed by criminal/legal matters", and although an actor he's in the UsefulNotes/ namespace for some strange reason. Well, at least we can all agree to get rid of anyone who's a Creator/, Music/, or Wrestling/.

The fact that it even needed this cleanup is proof enough that this page is problematic. A lock is the best way to ensure this page stays kosher.

[up] I think the problems with this page had more to do with a lack of clarity on what should and shouldn't be included in the list. Unless it invited a severe editing conflict, flame wars, or trolling, does it really need to be locked up indefinitely? What do the moderators think about this?

I suggested adding a commented-out note along the lines of the one on NeverLiveItDown.Real Life (i.e., several lines long to make it very hard to miss), though I'd prefer if a mod added it for the sake of making the notice official (that's what happened with NeverLiveItDown.Real Life's note).
