    Violette

Violette Rem Vahan

The eldest daughter of the ducal house Vahan. In the past, she grew angry at and jealous of her half sister Maryjune for being given the affection of both her father and Prince Claudia. She eventually tried to murder Maryjune, for which she was locked up for the rest of her life.

After traveling a year back in time to her second year at the academy, she plans to avoid everyone as much as possible and leave her family to become a nun once she has graduated.

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Violette's mother, Bellerose, mistreated her daughter after her husband left her. She forced Violette to dress and act like Auld. Marin witnessed how Bellerose forced her to act as her husband when they were in private to the point it gave Marin nightmares. Violette also received numerous injuries in her youth that Marin attempted to treat her for. After Bellerose died, it became clear that Bellerose had been the one inflicting these injuries on her.
    • Auld on the other hand left Violette in the hands of her abusive mother and never bothered to keep her safe. After Bellerose's death, he came back with his mistress-turned-wife and their daughter. He constantly warns Violette to not bring shame to the Vahan family and belittles Violette in front of Maryjune. He proceeds to physically abuse her after his meeting with his father-in-law.
    • Elfa, Violette's stepmother, proves to be quite a horrible person in Volume 3 as she acts nice towards Violette and wishes to get to know her better, but she ends up spending two hours harassing her due to her resembling her precious Auld.
  • All for Nothing: After Violette finds out that Rosette has officially become engaged to Prince Claudia in the current timeline rather than Maryjune, Violette isn’t angry at either Rosette nor Claudia. She is angry that all the suffering she went through in the original timeline was for nothing since Maryjune failed to get Claudia’s attention in this timeline simply because she chose to do things differently. Thankfully, after Violette is able to allow everything to sink in, she is shown being able to study and spend time with Rosette. They even decide to become penpals while Rosette temporarily goes back to her home country.
  • Alliterative Name: Violette Vahan. Subverted after she marries Yulan and takes his last name.
  • Aloof Big Sister: She tries to be this in the new timeline towards Maryjune. Unfortunately, she can't bear witnessing Maryjune being bullied or being scolded by her father for avoiding Maryjune, either, so she instead helps Maryjune integrate as a noble, which earns her her sister's admiration. However, when she does make her desire for Maryjune to leave her alone become known, Maryjune recognizes it as her somehow hurting or angering Violette.
  • Alpha Bitch: Violette is one of the most respected girls amongst the noblewomen at the Tanzanite Academy. She also used to be a total jerk towards anyone closely related to Claudia, especially her sister Maryjune. Her jerkish behavior is not present in the new timeline after realizing her mistakes, making her a Class Princess.
  • Always Second Best: Violette used to be The Ace, but when Maryjune entered her life, no matter how much she tried to best Maryjune, she always ended up being slightly worse. In the new timeline, she recognizes Maryjune's talent and just doesn't bother trying to compete anymore. Ironically, Violette ends up doing better in her own tests.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Violette outright asks Maryjune if she believes everyone who disagrees with her is evil or should be written off as a lost cause. She then tells Maryjune that everyone has different perspectives, and it is up to nobles to guide commoners on what is right and wrong. That shakes Maryjune to her core while also inadvertently affecting Prince Claudia who overheard the exchange. Quite fitting considering that the ones that she addresses this question are prone to Black-and-White Insanity.
  • The Atoner: After being put into a cell, Violette reflects her past actions and comes to regret what she has become. She recognizes the second chance she was given after traveling back a year in time to the point where she meets Maryjune and vows to not bother and hurt anyone anymore. She ends up looking after Maryjune, but more so out of guilt for what she did than out of love. She outright states that she will never love her sister because if she does, she will come to hate her. In Volume 4 of the Light Novels, this is thrown out of the window as Violette is finally forced to be honest about her feelings. She makes it clear to Maryjune that she hates her and her parents, and she wishes for them to be out of her life.
  • Bathtub Bonding: It is mentioned in the light novels that she and Marin used to take baths together.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: During the original timeline, even when Violette was at her worst, she still treated Marin and Yulan well, and the servants of the Vahan household were sympathetic towards her. In the new timeline, she lives up to this trope by attempting to temper her hatred towards her family, and she avoids making the same mistakes she did before which even allows Claudia to see her more positive points. In the manga, Milania makes note of how Violette's change in attitude along with her beauty would make her worthy of being a bride candidate for Claudia.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Zigzagged. Commented on by Milania in the bonus story of the manga's second volume. Violette looks perfect beside Claudia, but the only things that are praiseworthy are her looks and her family name. Character-wise, he found her horrible, but he was unaware of some of the massive baggage Violette was carrying that affected her. However, despite her flaws in the original timeline, she still treated her loyal maid, Marin, well, and she treasured her childhood friend, Yulan, to the point they continued to defend her after she was imprisoned. This ends up becoming subverted in the new timeline to the point that both Claudia and Milania take note of her change and believe they may have misjudged her.
  • Benevolent Boss: Regardless of the timeline, Violette treated her loyal maid, Marin, well, and she apparently treated the other Vahan servants well too.
  • Big Sister Bully: In the original timeline, she vented her anger at her parents at Maryjune, the embodiment of all her misfortune. In the new timeline, she does her best not to be involved, but situations force her to become involved for the opposite reason.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Violette can't help but protect Maryjune, who struggles fitting into noble society, from anyone who dares bullying her in the new timeline.
  • Broken Ace: As talented as Violette is, she never won her father's or Claudia's approval. In the present timeline, her father even tries to spark a Sibling Rivalry between her and Violette and shows his displeasement when Violette is lower in the rankings than Maryjune, even though they are not even in the same year, and Violette’s accomplishments are impressive on their own.
  • Celibate Heroine: During the second timeline, Violette has sworn off romance due to seeing how destructive a one-sided obsessive love, and she refuses to go through that grief and pain again. Her plans after graduation include leaving her family to live a simple and quiet life as a nun. This causes her trouble in Light Novel volume 2 when she becomes troubled by Maryjune’s attempts to get closer to Yulan which causes Violette to realize she is in love with Yulan, and she attempts to suppress it. Completely averted in Volume 4 of the Light Novel after Yulan tells her his wishes to marry her, and she accepts even before she learns that Yulan worked out an arranged marriage between them.
  • Childhood Friends: With Yulan, although he wishes it were more. Eventually, Violette becomes tempted to engage in a Childhood Friend Romance with Yulan after realizing she is in love with Yulan. During Volume 4 of the Light Novel, she is surprised that Yulan wishes to be with her and arranged for them to get married, and she accepts it.
  • Dark Andtroubled Past: To describe her childhood as being unpleasant would be putting it mildly due to her mother forcing her to act as a Replacement Goldfish after her father abandoned them.
  • Death Seeker: While Violette doesn't wish to commit suicide, she becomes apathetic towards life after being sexually harassed by her stepmother in Volume Three, followed by her getting physically abused by her father in Volume Four. Yulan and to a lesser extent Marin are the ones who manages to help her get out of it.
  • Devoted to You: Violette becomes completely devoted to Yulan after he informs her of his intentions to marry her, and he loves her.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: In the old timeline, Violette tried to impress Claudia with her violin performance. He ignored her and instead spent some leisurely time with Maryjune. In the present, she demonstrates her violin play to Maryjune to help her practice, which Milania and Claudia coincidentally witness and find lovely.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: In the second timeline, Violette has shown to be good at being able to get a read on people’s character. She was correct that her former posse were not the best people for her to hang around with, especially since she’s certain they were only hanging out with her for favors, and she cuts them out of her life, and she’s better off without them. She was right to befriend and trust Rosette as she legitimately cares for Violette despite Yulan’s initial concerns of her being a false friend, and she was supportive of her after she was abused by her family.. She was also correct in getting a feeling something was not quite right with Elfa even though she had no basis for her concerns as Elfa would later harass her due to her resemblance to her father.
  • The Exile: Following the events of Volume 4, that culminates her her father hitting her and her running away, she has effectively been forced into self-exile from her former home for her own safety.
  • Even the Girls Want Her:
    • At least her maid, Marin, does. Violette saved Marin from a miserable life and praised the beauty of her eyes for which Marin is endlessly grateful.
    • After she befriends Rosette, there is some indication that Rosette feels some level of attraction towards Violette, especially in the manga adaptation. Rosette shows a level of protectiveness for both Violette and their friendship when she is confronted by Yulan on the possibility of her being a False Friend to Violette.
    • Volume 4 indicates there are a decent number of girls besides her original posse that basically worship her from afar.
  • Forgiveness: On both ends of this trope in regards to Claudia in the new timeline. He apologizes to her for jumping to conclusions, and believing that she ordered others to either pour tea or harass Maryjune. In Light Novel Volume 3, she apologizes to him for her earlier actions and swears she won’t bother him again. While he accepts her apology, he is somewhat saddened by it.
  • Guilt Complex: Violette feels bad for anyone who feels compelled to help her, and she can’t do anything to repay them or if they suffer consequences for helping them even if it isn’t her fault.
  • Hates Their Parent: She hates all of her parents. Her mother for mistreating her, her father for abandoning her, and her stepmother for taking away her father. She ends up hating her stepmother even more because of her sexually harassing her in Volume 3 of the Light Novel, and she sees her as resurrecting her nightmares from her childhood trauma. In Volume 4, after her father hits her, she has very little problem openly stating her hatred for her family.
  • Hey, You!: Violette doesn't say it out loud to Maryjune personally, but in her mind she occasionally refers to Maryjune as 'That Girl', especially when Maryjune inadvertently causes trouble for her. Violette is also fine with expressing this sentiment to an extent when only Marin is around.
  • Humble Heroine: She develops into one in the new timeline. She quits her haughty, cruel, and vindictive behavior and instead downplays her skills, knowing that compared to Maryjune she is Always Second Best. The irony is that Claudia is now attracted to this new Violette, when Violette actually has given up on Claudia after realizing she was Loving a Shadow.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: This is Violette's Freudian Excuse for her behavior in the original timeline. Violette was deprived of love, as her mother only viewed her as a replacement for the husband that left her, while her father couldn't come to love Violette, as she was the child of his hated wife. He instead directed his affections at his mistress and their daughter, which is the reason for Violette's hatred towards her half sister. She decides to give up on ever being loved by her father and become a nun to get away from them for good. Violette finally gains solace after Yulan informs her that he arranged for them to get married, and she is happy to accept it.
  • Irony: In the original timeline, she pursued Claudia relentlessly and only earned his scorn, especially when she began bullying Maryjune. In the new timeline, Violette ceases her pursuit of Claudia and treats Maryjune more respectively, which causes Claudia to fall in love with her instead.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Ironically, in the past she acted a lot like her hated mother. Violette tried to force her "love" (i.e. obsession) onto Claudia, just like Bellerose tried with Auld. Unlike her mother though, Violette does realize her mistakes, albeit after being imprisoned for life and going back in time.
  • Love Epiphany: After Maryjune shows interest in becoming closer to Yulan, Violette begins going through this in Chapter 85 of the Light Novel and comes to the full realization that she is in love with Yulan by Chapter 89.
  • Love Hungry: In the past, Violette was overbearingly pestering Claudia to spend time with her, but he always ignored her advances. In the new timeline, she comes to the realization that she was selfishly Loving a Shadow; she only loved her ideal of a man, which she projected onto Claudia without even really knowing him, thinking that if she got together with the crown prince, she could find true love and happiness. This understanding leads to her dropping this entirely.
  • Missing Mom: Violette's mother, Bellerose, eventually became ill and died. It was presumably Death by Despair, as she couldn't bear the thought of living without her husband Auld, while Violette started looking more and more feminine, thus no longer being able to pretend to be Auld.
  • Nice Girl: Without the influence of her family as well as being better able to quell her anger, Violette is generally a decent person.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Regardless of the timeline, Violette always treated her loyal maid Marin well, but she especially treats her well in the rewound timeline. She also apparently treated the other servants well. As a result, the servants who served her while her mother was alive, such as Chef Chesuit, feel sympathetic towards Violette, and they are not pleased by her mistreatment.
  • No Hero to His Valet: Averted. Marin thinks the world of Violette for saving her. Violette on the other hand thinks Marin should be angry with bringing her into the Vahan household because she wished for someone close to her age to talk to and forced to witness her mother’s behavior.
  • Oblivious to Love: Violette is completely clueless about the fact that Yulan, Marin, and Claudia love her. To be fair, she has good reason to believe Claudia is more interested in Maryjune, since these two became an item in the original timeline and her own life being devoid of proper love from her family doesn't help. She would understandably not even consider that her own maid would be in love with her. While she enjoys Yulan's company and is implied to be in love with him without realizing it, she has trouble understanding his feelings for her go beyond friendship at least at first.
  • Odd Friendship: Violette develops an unexpected friendship with Princess Rosette which causes students to become quite intrigued by this new dynamic.
  • Official Couple: She and Yulan become engaged in the fourth light novel volume.
  • One Head Taller: When Violette first met Yulan, she was one head taller than him. After they become older, their roles reverse which is something that both she and Yulan lampshade.
  • One True Love: She is this to both Yulan and Marin for saving them.
  • Only Friend: Violette has been the only friend to multiple people. She was the only friend to her loyal maid, Marin. Before Yulan became friends with Gia, she was his only friend. In school, she is the only friend Princess Rosette has made that can be honest about her interests in reptiles.
  • Parental Favoritism: Auld makes it quite clear that he prefers Maryjune over Violette. In Volume 4 of the Light Novel, Violette disturbingly finds out that she is favored by her stepmother Elfa over Maryjune despite the fact that Elfa raised and loved Maryjune due to Violette resembling her father.
  • Pen Pals: In Volume 4, she and Rosette decided to become this after Rosette has to leave to go back to her home country for a period of time.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Violette learns she and Yulan have an arranged marriage after he negotiated with her grandfather, but she is fine with it.
  • Rage Breaking Point: She reaches this in Volume 4 of the Light Novel. Originally, she was rather calm when she told Maryjune that she hated her and her parents, but after Maryjune tries to convince her to return to the status quo despite what happened to her, Violette reaches her breaking point and lashes out about how Maryjune has everything, including loving parents.
  • Reformed Bully: In the original timeline, Violette used to bully Maryjune, and she relentlessly pursued Claudia's affections. In the new timeline, she stops her pursuit of Claudia, knowing that she acted badly and that he never had any interest in her, which ironically leads to Claudia developing an interest in her because he learned more about her family circumstances, and he saw more of her positive traits. In the Light Novel, this results in Claudia asking Violette to help with Student Council activities on several occasions and asking if she'd like a position.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Violette resembled her father greatly when she was a child, which is why her mother made Violette dress in boy's clothing and pretend to act like Auld, who abandoned her for his mistress. During Auld’s brief absence, Elfa decides to treat Violette in this manner much to Violette’s horror.
  • The Runaway: Violette is forced to runaway from the Vahan estate in Volume 4 of the Light Novel after her father physically abuses her.
  • Scapegoat: While it is true she bullied Maryjune in the original timeline, there are implications that not all of the bullying incidents were her fault, and she was blamed for all of them to have more reason to try her. In the second timeline, even when Violette decided to not bully Maryjune, a number of noblewomen decided to bully Maryjune without Violette’s knowledge or consent. It only stopped after Violette personally put a stop to it before Maryjune could escalate the problem.
  • Secret-Keeper: After Violette finds out that Princess Rosette has a strong interest in reptiles, Violette had no intention of spreading rumors about it from the beginning. She later assured Princess Rosette that her secret is safe with her, and she even reveals some secrets of her own to empathasize that, which leads to them becoming friends.
  • Self-Harm: In Light Novel Volume 3, after being sexually harassed by her stepmother for two hours, Violette punches a mirror in a bathroom because she couldn't stand seeing her own reflection regardless of the harm it caused her.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: She pushes Maryjune and Claudia together not because she supports a romantic relationship between them per se, but only so the troublesome events she's experienced as a result of her meddling in what she assumed to be romantic development between the two of them from the previous timeline wouldn't happen in the new one she's in. After it becomes apparent that Maryjune and Claudia aren’t going to get together in the new timeline, she decides to drop it. In the manga, after she finds out Princess Rosette is being pressured by her family to become Prince Claudia’s fiancé, she shows support for her efforts.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Violette tried to compete with Maryjune in the past, to show everyone that she is the superior Vahan daughter, but Maryjune always bested her. In the present, she knows she can't beat Maryjune, so she doesn't even try it. Ironically, by not trying to compete with Maryjune, Violette does better in her exams than she did in the previous timeline.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Not only do her and Maryjune not look alike at all, their origins and personalities are also vastly different. Maryjune's mother was a commoner, while Violette's mother was a high-ranking noble. Violette is boisterous and self-centered (or at least she used to be), while Maryjune is humble, sweet and kind. Interestingly, while Violette is reflective and mindful of her actions, Maryjune lacks self-awareness and the ability to reflect on them unless someone, namely Violette, has to spell it out for her. While both are viewed as beautiful, Violette is almost intimidatingly so, while Maryjune appears to be a Shrinking Violet. In both timelines, Marin and Yulan view Maryjune unfavorably because Maryjune’s way of thinking is rather dangerous and inadvertently ruins Violette’s life (and did ruin it in the original timeline), and they feel they owe a great deal to her.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: She is this in both timelines. She was originally an Alpha Bitch and a bitter jerk towards her half-sister in the original timeline. Even after reforming her ways in the new timeline, she remains acerbic and aloof for the most part though she's no longer as disdainful as before. This is mostly due in part to her miserable upbringing under her abusive parents and the sad life she lives as a result of so many negative things piling up against her both in the past and in the present. In Chapter 21 of the manga, Rosette can see that Violette seems to be rather tormented, but she keeps it to herself.
  • Stepford Smiler: In the new timeline, she masks her misery, self-loathing, sadness, and many other personal issues with her polite smiles at school. She's otherwise rather dour and somewhat sullen around others beneath the facade she puts up. She's only truly happy and expressive whenever she's with Yulan.
  • Stress Vomit: Nearly goes through this after being harassed by her stepmother due to her resemblance to her father. She is unable to vomit because she lacked an appetite to eat anything due to already feeling uneasy being in Elfa's presence.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She resembles her father Auld a lot. Unfortunately, after her father abandoned her mother, Bellerose dressed up Violette like a boy and made her act like she was Auld. After she grew up, she still retains some level of resemblance towards her father, which causes Elfa to harass Violette during Auld's absence, but it isn't nearly as strong as it was when she was younger.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: Violette was forced to dress like a boy to act as a Replacement Goldfish for her mother, who couldn't get over her obsession for Auld. Yulan’s flashbacks show that being forced to crossdress was painful for Violette, both physically and mentally. This all ended when Violette clearly developed into a woman, making her mother give up on her.
  • Sweet Tooth: Violette loves sweets. She often orders sweets in the canteen and Yulan invites her to confectioneries.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: Violette learned how to sew in her prison cell in the original timeline and plans to become a nun after graduating from the academy and work as a seamstress. However, since sewing is considered a servant skill in high society, Violette keeps this skill a secret in the new timeline. In the manga, she is able to use her skills to fix Prince Claudia’s cape after it gets accidentally torn.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Violette in the new timeline resolved not to make the same mistakes as she did in the original timeline.
  • Trauma Button: Violeta has a few things that remind her of the trauma her mother put her through during her childhood. Elfa ends up becoming another one when she’s sexually harassed by her due to her resemblance to her father.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Flashbacks indicate Violette wasn't always an Alpha Bitch and became how she was in the original timeline due to becoming Love Hungry toward Claudia on top of the stress from Maryjune and her stepmother marrying into the Vahan family. It was because she was a good person in her younger years that Marin, Yulan, and other servants cared for her so much.

    Maryjune

Maryjune Vahan

The younger daughter of the ducal house Vahan and Violette's half-sister from her father's commoner mistress.

  • Always Someone Better: Is this to Violette as she'd always be far better than her despite having less experience. In the new timeline, Violette simply stopped trying to be better than her, and she ironically did better in her own exams.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Maryjune is this to Violette in both timelines. Her being blantantly favored by her parents as well as her Innocently Insensitive attitude is enough to get on Violette's nerves, especially in the manga. Violette is simply better at keeping herself composed in the new timeline.
  • Big Sister Worship: She loves Violette despite the latter's resentment of her in the original timeline, even sparing her instead of having her executed when she tried to murder her. Her admiration of her grows even further in the new timeline as Violette eventually grows to be more protective and nurturing towards her even if the things she does for Maryjune aren't necessarily mostly out of love. This is especially true in the manga version of the story. Deconstructed however, given the main conflict of this series, as it seems that Maryjune loves the idea of having an older sister than loving Violette herself.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Marin and Yulan interpret Maryjune as this in the Light Novel. Whether she is actually like this or not hasn't been confirmed, but she does appear to invade in Violette's small bits of sanctuary which causes her to become depressed at the worst possible times. The fact that she desires Violette to return to the Vahan estate, despite the fact she literally saw Violette get hurt and chased out of the house by her father, proved her unwillingness to choose Violette over her parents. She gets called out on this selfishness by both Yulan and Violette.
  • Break the Cutie: Volume Four of the light novels does a number on her as she learns the life she’s been living is too sheltered, the real world is filled with people who won’t automatically like her, and learns that Violette hates both her and her parents and wants them out of her life.
  • Broken Pedestal: The fourth volume takes a toll on her perception of several people she looked up to. She learns that Yulan hates her, and he points out how much damage she and her family has done to Violette. She witnesses her father be physically abusive to Violette and outright tells him that he’s acting like a monster. She is horrified when her mother tries to trade her to Yulan in exchange for Violette due to Violette having a stronger resemblance to Auld. Finally, she breaks down when Violette snaps at her and tells her she doesn’t want anything to do with her.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Maryjune does defend Violette against her father's unjust criticisms toward her when she ranks fourth place in her year. Unfortunately, in the manga, she then follows up on that by bringing up the fact that Violette and Claudia might be interested in each other which makes things more awkward for Violette. In Volume 4, she calls her father out regarding his physical abuse towards Violette. However, it isn’t enough for her to realize that their ‘happy family’ isn’t going to work out or it is harmful to Violette.
  • Fatal Flaw: Naïveté and insensitivity. While she truly did want to be sisters with Violette, Maryjune's sheltered upbringing leads to her being unable to understand how her happiness has been at the expense of Violette, leading to her being completely unable to understand or interact with her sister on any meaningful level. In the original timeline, it lead to Violette attempting to kill her while in the new timeline, Maryjune tries to convince Violette to return to the status quo, showing she lacks both the understanding and resolve to acknowledge what her parents have put her sister through and truly be a person able to love and support her sister. This leads to Violette lashing out, saying she wants nothing to do with her or her family ever again.
  • Guilt Complex: Maryjune develops this during Volume 4 of the Light Novel, she promises that she would do everything she can to give back everything she and her parents stole from Violette.
  • Innocently Insensitive: She truly does want to get along with Violette, but her inability to understand why Violette would resent her for various reasons, including being obviously favored by their father and Violette having to deal with her abusive mother alone because of said father leaving her for Maryjune's mother, contributed to Violette trying to murder her. Even in the new timeline, Violette can't bring herself to love her and Maryjune remains blissfully unaware of her hardships. This is one reason why Marin and Yulan both covertly dislike her for how much she ends up hurting Violette as a result and gets called out on this behavior by both in Volume 4 of the Light Novel. In the same volume, despite being told by Violette that she hates her and her parents and attempts to more or less let Maryjune down lightly, Maryjune tries to get her sister to return to the status quo wanting to have a happy family despite Violette having been sexually harassed by Elfa and physically abused by Auld, which ultimately ends up Violette's breaking point concerning her.
  • Irony: In the original timeline, she got engaged to Prince Claudia without a hitch compared to her sister's attempts to do the same not being as successful. In the second timeline, she turns off Claudia due to her black-and-white mentality, and he ends up becoming interested in Violette due to her understanding the complexities of nobility. Additionally, she becomes drawn to Yulan due to his intelligence, and she tries to get closer to him. However, he's both in love in Violette and dislikes Maryjune because of how thoughtless she is concerning her sister's feelings, ultimately getting engaged to Violette.
  • Parental Favoritism: She's the favorite daughter of Auld, something that only made Violette resent her even more in the original timeline. While Violette still feels a degree of anger in the second timeline, she is able to tame it more.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Maryjune's characterization can be summarized by this. While she may be rich because of her father and does well in school, she is unable to understand others or noble society. She required Violette to bail her out and protect her from other school bullies that she enraged by her lack of conduct. Played for Drama and Deconstructed once the story decides to tackle Violette's enduring abuse against their father and her mother Elfa.
  • Secretly Selfish: Volume 4 of the Light Novel reveals that Maryjune is this which is something she is called out on by Marin, Yulan, and Violette. While wanting a happy family is perfectly fine, she wants to maintain the status quo despite how harmful it is towards Violette. The narration indicates that Maryjune isn't willing to sacrifice or choose between either her parents or her sister, which is a key reason for her receiving consecutive dressing downs throughout the volume and Violette telling her in rage she hates both her and her parents and wants absolutely nothing to do with her after she tries to get Violette to return to the Vahan household after having been mentally and physically abused by said parents.
  • Shipper on Deck: In the manga, she thinks Violette and Claudia have an interest in one another (she's correct to assume Claudia has feelings for her, but unbeknownst to Maryjune, Violette's fallen out of love for him) after accidentally spotting them alone together during the Blooming Summer Festival and so happily cheers her sister on and supports her in her relationship with him, much to Violette's chagrin.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Maryjune is noted to look a lot like her mother. That leads her mother, Elfa, to favor Violette because Maryjune doesn't look much like Auld.
  • The Unfavorite: Maryjune learns that her mother favors Violette over her due to Violette resembling Auld.

    Auld

Auld Loa Vahan

The patriarch of the Vahan Household and the father of Violette and Maryjune.

  • Altar Diplomacy: The marriage with his first wife. Bellerose fell in love with Auld and eventually forced the marriage to happen.
  • Arranged Marriage: Bellerose had her marriage with Auld Loa Vahan forced on him because she loved him.
  • Disappointed in You: Occasionally tells this to Violette when displeased by her, notably when she placed 4th in the final exams while Maryjune placed 2nd. The latter quickly calls him out on this.
  • Freudian Excuse: His first wife Bellerose was intoxicating and possessive, causing him to decide to abandon her and Violette to live with his mistress, only returning after he learns that she passed away. Because of this, he treats his daughter with her, Violette, with absolute indifference.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Violette briefly considers thinking things from her father’s perspective to then toss it aside and come to the conclusion they can never come to an understanding after how he’s treated her.
  • Hate Sink: Freudian Excuse aside, there is really no reason for him to treat Violette so horribly. He seems to be intentionally trying to spark a Sibling Rivalry between his daughters and never has anything positive to say about Violette, going as far as to downplay her accomplishments. His behavior is one of the reasons why Violette reacted the way she did in the original timeline.
  • Hypocrite: Auld constantly lambasts Violette that she needs to uphold the dignity of the household while Violette mentally remarks on how Auld left the household for years to live with his commoner mistress against how that would look to noble society. Volume 3 also reveals that he only got the Vahan name through marrying Bellerose and despite hating her, he still feels entitled allow his commoner mistress and daughter into the Vahan name and the prestige that comes with it. Additionally, his actions towards Violette could result in the actual Vahan bloodline to become extinct while the family would continue to exist in name only. As far as anyone knows, Violette is the true legitimate Vahan and holds more power than him, her stepmother, and Maryjune.
  • Ironic Hell: Auld abandoned his first wife and daughter because he couldn't stand how Bellerose was obsessed with him which is why he moved in with his mistress and married her after Bellerose died. At the end of Volume 4, he sees for himself that his second wife is just as bad if not worse than his first wife since she attempted to auction his beloved daughter, Maryjune, to Yulan, so they could keep Violette simply because she resembled him more.
  • Irony: Despite how he hated Bellerose for being so obsessed with him, Elfa turns out to be the same as Bellerose being dangerously obsessed with him, if not worse, and is just better at hiding it from him.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty:
    • In Volume 3 of the Light Novel, he is summoned by the father of his previous wife for unspecified reasons for a week, something that didn't happen in the original timeline. According to Marin, he was alarmed by this summons. Yulan apparently plans on having him pay for his treatment of Violette in one way or another and this summons may in fact be related to that.
    • In volume 4 of the light novel, his ideal family is failing, he is thrown by the cook due to physically abusing Violette, and he realizes his beloved Elfa might not be so different from the wife he despised. He also gets his ass handed to him by Chesuit when he attempts to destroy Violette's room.
  • Maiden Name Debate: It is revealed in the Volume 3 that Auld married into the Vahan household as Violette's grandfather on her mother's side was the previous Patriarch of the Vahan House.
  • Misplaced Retribution: He punishes and mistreats Violette for things that she has no control over.
    • It is indicated his mistreatment of Violette stems from the fact that she is the daughter between himself and Bellerose rather than with the woman he actually loves.
    • In Volume 4, he slaps Violette and attempts to further harm her due to the disastrous meeting he had with his father-in-law and the fact Maryjune was crying. In actuality, Violette had nothing to do with either. She didn't have anything to do with her grandfather's action, and Yulan was technically the one who caused Maryjune to cry, and Violette simply confirmed how she felt. If anything, Violette was attempting to let Maryjune down easy when he broke into room.
  • Never My Fault: The author has made it clear that this attitude of his, is a chief reason why a reconcilation between him and Violette was never going to be possible. While he's quick to blame Violette for anything done to Maryjune, he never considers how Maryjune gets treated and viewed is a consequence of his own actions of remarrying his mistress shortly after Bellerose died. He also doesn’t consider the fact that he coddled Maryjune and thus failed to properly raise and prepare her for noble society before bringing her into the Vahan House as Maryjune’s lack of decorum nearly escalated her problems before Violette intervened. He is quick to blame Violette for when things are going downhill for him at the beginning of Volume 4 despite the fact she had nothing to do with it to the point that he doesn't hesitate to strike her.
  • No Accounting for Taste: Elfa turns out to be just as dangerously obsessed with him as Bellerose was, something he only discovers after said wife tries to pawn off his beloved daughter to Yulan just so she can keep Violette due to her resemblance to him.
  • Parental Neglect: He is like this towards his eldest daughter Violette, constantly compares her negatively to her half-sister Maryjun, fueling Violette's resentment towards her in the original timeline, and belittles her at every turn if he doesn't ignore her whenever they so much as speak. On the other hand, he treats his 2nd wife and Maryjun much better than he does Violette, and obviously favors his daughter from his second marriage over his first. While the reasons for his terrible treatment of Violette stem from his own bad experiences with her equally horrid mother, it doesn't justify it. No wonder Violette hates him so much and wants to leave the family.
  • Remarried to the Mistress: Duke Vahan had an affair for many years with his commoner mistress. Once his wife passed away, he married his mistress and brought her and their daughter to his household.

    Bellerose

Bellerose Vahan

Auld's first wife and Violette's mother. She was deeply in love with him and was able to force a marriage between the two of them. However, her Yandere tendencies drove him away. Her obsession with him led to her screwing up Violette's childhood and is responsible for how she turned out. Auld refused to return home until she died.
  • Abusive Parent: She would hurt Violette both physically and mentally throughout her childhood.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She would accuse Auld of cheating on her long before he actually did, and she would harm women who she caught Auld talking to, even if they were merely servant that he was discussing something with.
  • Death by Despair: It's implied that Auld's abandonment and refusal to love her back drove her to depression and eventually killed her.
  • Her Own Worst Enemy: Apparently, Auld was willing to try to make things work, but Bellerose’s behavior ended up deciding to take up a mistress and live with her.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: Her love for Auld drove her to insanity, attacking any woman who got close to him. It got even worse after he left.
  • Never My Fault: She was never capable of realizing her own behavior and clingy tendencies is why Auld could not bring himself to love her.
  • Parental Neglect: She was originally overbearing, making Violette pull a Sweet Polly Oliver and trying to mold her into a clone of her father. However after she hit puberty she effectively abandoned Violette and slipped into depression.
  • Posthumous Character: She had died before the events of the story, even with Violette's trip to the past, and only appears in flashbacks. Her death effectively sets the current story in motion, causing Auld to move back in and the resulting conflict with Maryjune.
  • Present Absence: Despite being long dead, her presence is still felt as the trauma she caused Violette causes her trouble in the present day, and her actions are constantly referenced throughout the series.
  • Replacement Goldfish: She makes Violette dress as a boy and makes her drink Auld's favorite tea after he leaves her. She seems to of tried making her daughter as much like Auld as possible until her gender become impossible to ignore.
  • Yandere: She loved Auld and managed to marry him. However, she wanted him to love her back so badly that she attacked any woman that came near Auld. This eventually drove him away and he went to go live with his mistress. She then proceeded to force Violette to dress and act like Auld until she grew up to the point that crossdressing wouldn't work.

    Elfa

Elfa Vahan

The former mistress and second wife of Auld. She is the mother of Maryjune and stepmother to Violette.
  • Arc Villain: After her husband is away, she becomes a new nightmare for Violette, and she is an obstacle in Marin's attempts to get Violette help.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She comes across as a nice lady who wishes to get to know her stepdaughter better with a tea party, only to spend two hours harassing Violette due to her still having a resemblance towards her father while he is absent.
  • Broken Pedestal: She simultaneously broke it for both Auld and Maryjune after she tries to trade Maryjune for Violette to be Yulan’s fiancé. Maryjune sees that her mother favors Violette simply because Violette resembles her father more while Auld can’t help be see Bellerose when he looks at Elfa.
  • Depraved Bisexual: She is in love with Auld, but she becomes quite obsessed with Violette due to her resembling him. When Yulan informs the Vahan family of his and Violette's engagement, she tries to pawn off Maryjune to Yulan, so she can keep Violette because she favors Violette's resemblance to her beloved Auld.
  • Double Standard: Rape, Female on Female: Horrifically defied. Elfa's sexual harassment of Violette leaves the latter girl traumatized and too stressed out to even eat. She even injures herself by punching a mirror because she can't stand looking at her own reflection. Volume Four showcases Violette is horrified of Elfa, and she is frightened by the prospect that Elfa wants to keep her by pawning off her Maryjune to Yulan.
  • The Dreaded: She becomes this to Violette, Marin and to a lesser extent Chesuit during Auld's absence. Violette is horrified that this woman is the rebirth of her nightmares and wishes to stay away from her. Marin was somewhat frightened of her the moment she openly took an interest in Violette. Chesuit described it best himself that he never expected that they would need to fear her. Even Yulan is surprised by this as he figured Auld would be more dangerous.
  • The Mistress: She was Auld’s mistress for over a decade before he took advantage of Bellerose’s death to marry her.
  • Replacement Goldfish: While Auld is gone, she treats Violette as this much to Violette's horror. In Volume 4 of the Light Novel, she actually tries to pawn off Maryjune to Yulan, so she can keep Violette in the Vaham household due to Violette bearing a stronger resemblance to Auld over Maryjune who is her actual daughter.
  • Villainous Incest: Sort of. She's Violette's stepmother, but she is legally Violette's mother nonetheless. She also sexually harasses her due to her resemblance to Auld. She also tries to sell her biological daughter into an arranged marriage to Yulan, so she can keep Violette due to Violette resembling her beloved Auld more than Maryjune does.
  • Wicked Stepmother: She's this towards Violette in Volume 3 as she at first seems to want to get to know Violette better only for her to begin harassing Violette and making her feel uncomfortable during their tea party for nearly two hours.
  • Walking Spoiler: While you can describe her early role in the story was to be a catalyst for Violette's tragic life, the aspects of her role in the present day are harder to describe without going into the darker aspects.
  • Yandere: Just like Bellerose, she is dangerously obsessed with Auld. Just him being temporarily absent leads her to sexually harass her own stepdaughter because of her physical resemblance to him.

    Violette's Grandfather

Violette's Grandfather

The previous patriarch of the Vahan household. He is the father of Bellerose and grandfather to Violette. Apparently, he was the one who named Violette, but she doesn't have much memory of him outside of seeing him at her mother's funeral.

  • The Dreaded: According to Marin, him summoning Auld to his mansion has caused his son-in-law to become quite alarmed. While his intentions are unknown, his mere presence is enough for Auld to be fearful.
  • The Ghost: While he is mentioned in Volumes 3 & 4, he has yet to appear physically.
  • The Needs of the Many: Apparently, he cares more about the state of the country than how his granddaughter is being treated by his son-in-law.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: He outlived his daughter, Bellerose, and he is apparently none too pleased about it.
  • Present Absence: While he has not made any physical appearances in Volume 3 nor 4 of the Light Novel, his influence on the plot is made abundantly clear, especially after Yulan successfully negotiated with him to get his approval on becoming engaged to Violette.

    Marin

Marin

Marin is Violette's personal maid that has served her for years, including the years her father left her alone with her mother. She is in love with her mistress.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: She was abandoned by her parents on her fourth birthday.
  • A-Cup Angst: In one of the omakes of the manga, it is indicated she does feel a certain level of envy regarding Violette's breast size.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It is unclear if Marin has memories of the previous timeline like Yulan and Violette does, but there are certain instances that could indicate she might or at the very least may have some unconscious instinct to do something to prevent the same tragedy even if she doesn’t fully remember. In Volume 3, she takes action to try to contact Yulan to save Violette after she is sexually harassed by her stepmother.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Towards Violette at the end of the second light novel volume. While she phrases it in a way that makes Violette think she loves her as a servant caring for her mistress, she does mean that she does love Violette romantically.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: One of her primary reasons for her loyalty towards Violette.
  • Birthday Hater: Being abandoned by her parents is enough for Marin to refuse to tell anyone when her birthday is, including Violette. Regardless, Violette makes sure to give her a gift because she wants Marin to be glad she was born.
  • Childhood Friends: She was hired by Violette to be her maid when Marin was thirteen and Violette was nine.
  • The Confidant: She is the only one Violette fully trusts in the Vahan household.
  • Devoted to You: Marin has made it clear that her devotion is strictly to Violette and no one else. After Violette is more or less forced out of the Vaham estate and Yulan gives her shelter, Marin continues to strictly serve her, and Yulan hires Marin to continue being Violette's personal maid.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • While she is in no position to voice her opinions, she has a great deal of contempt for how both Violette’s parents have treated her throughout her life.
    • Marin was especially disturbed by how Bellerose forced Violette to act as her husband to the point the scene caused Marin to have nightmares after what she witnessed.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: In Volume 3 of the Light Novel, Marin was correct to be suspicious of Elfa taking an interest in Violette as Elfa would harasse Violette similar to how she witnessed Bellerose treated Violette when she was a little girl.
  • Heroic Bastard: She was born out of an affair her mother had with someone else, and she is extremely loyal and faithful to her mistress, Violette, in both timelines.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: In the Light Novel, it is revealed to the readers that she has a special disdain for Maryjune due to her Innocently Insensitive antics among other things that have caused pain for Violette. The manga also gives some indications of her disdain, but they are not nearly as frequent.
  • Mirror Character: The narration in Volume Three indicated that she is this towards Yulan. Both are illegitimate children of nobility, Marin was taken in by Violette to be her personal maid while Yulan was adopted into his Uncle’s family to take over his position to serve the king. Both were saved by Violette from their circumstances when she was a child, and they have romantic feelings towards her. They are acquianted to each other through their connection with Violette. They both were unable to save her from the abuse she suffered from her mother. In the original timeline, they did their best to help her, but they were ultimately unable to save her. Marin also wished to kill all those responsible for making Violette’s life a living hell not unlike Yulan. During the second timeline, they both see that the other is the only other potential ally to help Violette, but their different stations make it difficult for them to communicate with each other.
  • My Greatest Failure: Marin feels guilty for not being able to protect Violette from being abused by her mother. In the original timeline, she regretted not being able to help Violette with how her family pushed her to the brink of madness.
  • Please Wake Up: After she finds Violette unconscious in the bathroom, following Violette being harassed by her stepmother for two hours, she grabs Violette and begs her to wake up. She resolves that Violette needs to get out of the house, or it will be the end of her.
  • Queer Establishing Moment: It is established that she is in love with Violette for years.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: After holding in her hatred for the Vahans treatment of Violette, she gives a scathing one to Maryjune for her role in getting Violette hurt.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: Marin is fine with Yulan getting together with Violette as long as he is able to rescue her from the Vahan household. After Violette was harassed by her stepmother, Marin actively attempts to contact Yulan for help.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Marin believes the way the family has treated her mistress, Violette, is unforgivable.
  • Undying Loyalty: She has always supported Violette regardless of the circumstances.
    • In the light novel, the thought of seeing Marin again is one of the things that kept Violette going after being sentenced to prison in the original timeline. Likewise, she and Yulan worked together in the original timeline to petition for Violette's release and get people to investigate the cause of Violette's breakdown and crime, namely the abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother and father.
    • In the third volume of the light novel, Marin is willing to put her employment and her life at risk to save Violette after seeing how the Vahan Household, especially after Elfa harassed Violette, is taking a toll on her mental and physical health. She risks everything to find Yulan's contact information and attempts to reach out to him for help.
    • In the fourth volume, Marin's devotion to Violette along with Violette caring for her causes Yulan to speculate that the Vahan's could potentially use her as a hostage to force Violette under their control. Yulan makes it a point to Marin to continue being Violette's personal maid after he helps her break away from her family. Marin also quickly becomes willing to be a devoted subordinate to Yulan due to their mutual wishes to see Violette happy.

    Chesuit

Chef Chesuit

The family chef of the Vaham household since before Violette was born. According the author, he may have a soft spot for Violette.

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He easily overpowers and throws Auld after he hits Violette and attempts to destroy her room after she runs away.
  • Didn't See That Coming: He admits he did not see Elfa to becoming just as dangerous of a threat to Violette as her father is.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While he seemed somewhat aloof, he feels the need to help take action after realizing how dangerous Elfa actually is. He also gets into a physical altercation with Auld after he punches Violette, fully accepting that he will get fired for it.
  • The Ghost: Only mentioned a few times in the first two volumes of the Light Novel. Finally averted in Volume 3.
  • Named in the Sequel: He was unnamed during the first two volumes of the light novel before finally being given a name in the third volume.
  • Resign in Protest: Technically, he was fired, but he got into a physical altercation with Auld knowing it would result in his termination because he couldn't stand by Auld treating Violette as his punching bag nor destroying her belongings.
  • Unseen No More: He is mentioned multiple times during the first two volumes, and he finally makes his first physical appearance in the third volume.

Royal Family & Retainers

    Claudia

Prince Claudia Acrucis

The crown prince and the object of Violette's affections in the original timeline. He would instead get engaged to Maryjune, which eventually caused Violette to almost murder her.

In the new timeline, Violette eventually ceases her pursuit of him after realizing she didn't really love him. However, this leads to Claudia becoming interested in her instead.

  • Adaptation Expansion: While he is an important character in the Light Novel, the manga adds more scenes highlighting his growing attraction towards Violette.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He wished for Violette to leave him alone. In the new timeline, she decides to do just that, and he quickly comes to regret it as his right hand man is quick to notice he has become lonely without her attempts to visit him at the student council room, especially once he starts to become drawn to Violette after starting to see her better qualities when she's not blinded by her worst traits.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Claudia saw Maryjune as an innocent victim while he lambasted Violette for being an evil and vile woman due to his sense of justice. However, this trait of him is deconstructed: Claudia's sense of justice also makes him biased to other things around him, such as him not even considering there being another factor behind why Violette hates her sister. Yulan points out that being so rigid to the point of being inflexible isn't an ideal trait for a future ruler which requires him having to make complex decisions that cannot be approached in such a narrow scope.
  • Bully Hunter: Due to his strong sense of justice, Claudia hated watching Maryjune be bullied in the original timeline and become protective of her. Deconstructed, as he also failed to recognize and address the circumstances behind why Violette was bullying Maryjune, which only served to make Violette's resentment toward Maryjune grow until she lashed out in the worst possible way. In the new timeline, his hasty accusation toward Violette bullying Maryjune at the tea party, as Yulan points out, actually put more attention on the Vahan sisters than needed.
  • The Cameo: Claudia is merely featured in single illustration in Volume 4 without any lines or other appearances.
  • Demoted to Extra: After the halfway point of Volume 3, Claudia is more or less regulated to the background. While he gets mentioned a few times, he does not get a substantial scene after Volume 4.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: It's heavily implied Claudia's feelings toward Maryjune in the original timeline were the result of this. When he overhears Maryjune lambasting other noblewomen as narrow-minded along with Violette diffusing the situation and lecturing her sister about her conduct, he ends up not being attracted to Maryjune and directs his feelings toward Violette instead.
  • Hypocrite:
    • In the new timeline, his bully hunter ways caused him to immediately assume Violette was bullying her younger sister when Violette had nothing to do with the bullying. He comes across as a bully himself by putting Violette on the spot and humiliating her without giving her a chance to defend or explain herself while bringing more attention to the Vahan situation than needed. Yulan later calls Claudia out on it.
    • For his strong sense of justice, by Yulan's account of Violette's trial in the original timeline, she wasn't given a fair trial as the court completely dismissed Marin's testimonies about how Violette was treated by her family in hopes of a more merciful sentence. Given how the crown prince often has a hand over the decision of the court, his claims of having strong sense of justice rings hollow. Additionally, her firing and dismissal from the Vahan household should have been a red flag that they were trying to coverup what was happening behind the scenes.
  • Irony:
    • Despite hating Violette for being so obsessed with him seeing him as a way for her to be loved, the second timeline indicates that his feelings for Maryjune in the original timeline were done because of The Dulcinea Effect rather than truly knowing her, meaning his reasons for loving Maryjune weren't fundamentally too different from Violette's reasons for loving him.
    • When Violette apologizes to Claudia and swears that she won’t bother him anymore, Claudia is saddened by this rather than feeling relieved. Regardless, he does accept the apology and believes her words when he refused to believe her in the other timeline.
  • Loving a Shadow: It's heavily implied Claudia's feelings for Maryjune were more from The Dulcinea Effect and viewing her as a delicate maiden that needed to be protected from her wicked half-sister rather than truly knowing her. Tellingly, seeing Maryjune call other noblewomen narrow-minded leaves enough of a negative impression to him for him to end up directing feelings toward Violette instead.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: He never gave Violette so much as the time of day when she was aggressively pursuing him. However shortly after she stopped showing up he started to take an interest in her. People even teased him about being lonely after she stopped coming by every day. Justified however, as it's implied she was both a stalker to him and a bully towards Maryjune in the original timeline. In the new timeline, her backing off and acting more casually around him allowed him to see her better traits along with finding out more about her backstory which allowed him to understand her better.
  • Put on a Bus: After he and Violette bury the hatchet in Volume 3, he more or less disappears from the story for a significant period of time outside of Yulan's flashback to the previous timeline and a single illustration to indicate his betrothal to Rosette.

    Yulan

Yulan Cugrus

Violette's childhood friend and a member of a royal branch family. He is secretly Claudia's half-brother from a concubine, making him a prince by blood, but was adopted by his uncle, the prime minister, at a young age.

  • Accidental Pervert: In the manga, he accidentally comes across Violette partly undressed as Marin is attempting to make her appear like a boy as per her mother's orders. He immediately attempts to avert his eyes and is embarrassed by seeing Violette in that state of undress.
  • Always Someone Better: In Volume Two of the Light Novel and one of the extras of the manga, it is indicated that Claudia believes Yulan is more worthy of being the crown prince than him due to his charm and ability to communicate with others.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: During his confrontation with Maryjune in Volume Four of the light novel, he asks her when she was enjoying her happy family life where Violette was along with what was going on with Violette during this time. Maryjune is unable to provide an answer because his question exposes the sheltered life she lived.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: When asked by Princess Rosette if he’s going to say his actions are solely for Violette’s sake, he replies they are for his own sake. He then promptly leaves Rosette behind after telling her he learned what he wanted to know, leaving her in a state of bewilderment.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Violette was the first person to say she believed his eyes were beautiful and put an end to the bullying that he was being subjected to.
  • Berserk Button: Insulting or being dismissive of Violette is definitely a hot button issue for him. In most cases, he can keep himself composed, but he definitely makes his distaste known. In the original timeline, when Claudia and Maryjune dismiss Violette as a criminal that deserves to be punished, he makes it clear to them both that he will not tolerate them saying one more word, especially since he considers them partly responsible for her breakdown, which causes both of them to be frightened. In the new timeline, he forces himself to hold back when speak with Maryjune because he knows the Vahan family would punish Violette if he openly treats Maryjune poorly. He finally snaps at Maryjune in Volume 4, making it clear to her that not only does he despise her, but finds her behavior towards Violette horrible.
  • Bridal Carry: He carries Violette after she is harmed by her father and forced to runaway from home which results in her feet getting injured as well.
  • Brutal Honesty: He does not hesitate to speak his mind about Claudia's tendency to jump to conclusions, not considering his position as a member of royalty, and how him meddling in the Vahan family situation actually put more attention on them than needed. He also in brutally honest about the fact that all the people in Violette's entourage were not actually her friends.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Yulan is attempting to engage in this with Violette due to seeing her as his angel after she saved him from being bullied in childhood. He ends up being successful in Volume 4 of the Light Novel.
  • Childhood Friends: With Violette, although he wishes it was something more.
  • Control Freak: He is called out on being this by Princess Rosette when he confronts her on why she decided to become friends with Violette when she is tentatively set to become Prince Claudia's fiancé.
  • The Dreaded: Most who become familiar with the darker aspects of Yulan's personality become quite frightened and/or intimidated by him, such as Rosette and Maryjune.
  • Devoted to You: He is devoted to Violette in both timelines. In the original, he was okay with supporting Violette falling in love with someone else. In the current timeline, he is not.
  • Didn't See That Coming: While he was warned by Marin and Chesuit that Elfa was someone to be wary of, he did not expect she would be so depraved as to pawn off her own biological daughter to him in order to keep her stepdaughter due to her resemblance to her husband.
  • Happily Adopted: Zig-zagged. By his own admission, he respects his adopted parents and sees they are good people, but he has trouble embracing them as his true family due to the fact that they adopted him after being abandoned by his father, the King. When they attempted to comfort him when he was bullied, while he could see they were attempting to comfort him, he also interpreted them as saying 'this is how things are'.
  • Hates Their Parent: Aside from hating his half-brother Claudia, Yulan hates his biological father, the King, for abandoning him.
  • Heroic Bastard: He was born out of wedlock between the king and a mistress, and he was taken in by a branch family. He wishes to be a hero to protect Violette. He's eventually successful in rescuing Violette from her household and becomes engaged to her.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: In Volume 2 of the Light Novel, it is revealed in the narration that he hates Maryjune due to her way of thinking being dangerous and how she inadvertently ruined Violette’s life in the original timeline and is harming Violette in the current timeline, accusing her by acting as if the abuse didn't happen because fighting back against her father would mean destroying her blissful and stress-free life. He finally reveals his disdain for her in full detail duringVolume 4 of the light novel.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He initially accepted Violette choosing to pursue Claudia because he only wanted Violette to find happiness despite his own feelings for her. This is subverted in the new timeline due to Yulan being aware of Violette's fate in the previous timeline along with the role Claudia partially played in it, he has decided that he needs to be the one that makes Violette happy, even becoming annoyed when Claudia becomes attracted to Violette. He also becomes concerned when Violette befriends Rosette who unbeknownst to Violette is tentatively set to become Claudia's fiancé. He decides to confront her to make sure she isn't planning anything untoward against Violette.
  • Mirror Character: The narration of Volume Three indicates he felt like he was looking in a mirror when he spoke with Marin. Both were saved by Violette from their circumstances when she was a child, and they originally hated their eyes before Violette proclaimed she thought they were beautiful. They are acquainted to each other through their connection with Violette. They both were unable to save her from the abuse she suffered from her mother. In the original timeline, they did their best to help her, but they were ultimately unable to save her from succumbing to her despair and ending up in prison due to her reaching her breaking point. During the second timeline, they both see that the other is the only other potential ally to help Violette, but their different stations make it difficult for them to communicate with each other. While Yulan is aware of the previous timeline, it isn't clear if Marin has any recollection of it. Yulan and Marin share a mutual understanding in Volume Four of the light novel to protect and take care of Violette, and he makes sure to hire her to continue being Violette's personal maid.
  • My Greatest Failure: Similar to Marin, he regrets not being able to save Violette from her abusive childhood. He laments despite how Violette's words and company saved him from his self-loathing, there was nothing he could do to help her from her own family situation. It is revealed he regrets doing nothing after Violette announced her desire to pursue Claudia because he believed he would make her happy. He didn't anticipate how Claudia's repeated rejection of Violette and choosing her half-sister, Maryjune, along with her continual mistreatment of her family ultimately led to Violette breaking down and trying to murder Maryjune and being imprisoned for life.
  • Official Couple: He and Violette become an item during Volume 4 of the Light Novel.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: He was able to successfully negotiate with Violette’s grandfather who values his country over family to allow him to marry/save Violette, which more of less leaves Auld in ruins.
  • One True Love: After Violette comes to turns she never actually loved Claudia as a person but the idea of someone to love her, she comes to appreciate Yulan far more. Eventually, she comes to realize that Yulan is the person she truly loves.
  • Only Friend: Yulan acknowledges that, aside from her personal maid Marin, he has been Violette’s only friend because he knows that Violette’s entourage in the previous timeline didn’t care about Violette as a person. In the previous timeline, Yulan and Marin were the only ones who attempted to speak on Violette's behalf and petition for her freedom. He's also the only friend of Gia Forte, but he is sometimes indifferent towards him for good reason. In both the light novel and manga, he is genuinely surprised that Violette manages to befriend Princess Rosette because he’s aware any other ‘friends’ Violette were merely using her as a means to gain connections to the Vahan household.
  • Past-Life Memories: While it is hinted at before, it is confirmed in Volume 3 of the Light Novel and Volume 4 of the manga that Yulan remembers the original timeline like Violette, including what ultimately happened to Violette because of Claudia and her family. As a result, he’s more hostile towards his half-brother, and he's far more willing to criticize him in the new timeline, especially after Claudia starts becoming attracted to Violette. He’s also planning on attempting to save Violette from her family household and possibly destroy them for their treatment of her. Violette also notices Yulan acting differently than he did in the original timeline.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: While his engagement to Violette is technically a political one, it becomes clear they are happy to be together.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: Yulan tends to give these to Claudia and to a lesser extent Mira with relative frequency, most notable when he criticizes Claudia's decision to jump to conclusions that Violette ordered someone else to spill tea on Maryjune without hearing Violette's side of the story or allowing Violette to handle the situation herself. He finally gives one to Maryjune in the fourth volume of the Light Novel regarding her sheltered upbringing and stupidity when it comes to social situations.
  • Relative Button: His half-brother, Prince Claudia, and to a lesser extent his biological father, the king, in general are a source of great distaste for them. Claudia even thinks how Yulan has never looked at him in admiration once as far as they’ve known each other. In the Light Novel, he is reluctant to ask Claudia to help Violette to study for her exams, but he does so out of necessity.
  • Rescue Romance: After failing to save Violette in the original timeline, Yulan does what he can to save Violette from her family in the second timeline. He finally is able to in Volume 4 of the light novel, getting Violette out of the house after being sexually assaulted by her stepmother and physically assaulted by her father. It is completed with a bridal princess carry and plans for a Perfectly Arranged Marriage.
  • Revenge: Not for himself, but for Violette. He's aware of how her family mistreats her and plans on getting revenge on them on Violette's behalf, and he's aware of how their mistreatment of her played a role in her breakdown and imprisonment in the original timeline.
  • Spare to the Throne: It has been mentioned that if anything happened to Claudia, Yulan would be the only candidate to replace him.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: This is his stance regarding anyone who mistreats Violette in either timeline.
  • Undying Loyalty: Yulan is loyal to Violette and Violette alone.
  • The Unfettered: His goal is to ensure Violette's happiness, and he will not let anyone get in the way of that. Rosette calls him out by saying that he better not act like he's doing this for Violette's sake, and Yulan merely replies that he's doing it for his own sake, and he's unbothered by anything she says which causes Rosette to become unnerved.

    Milania

Lord Milania Dior

A childhood friend of Prince Claudia, and he is his loyal attendant.

  • Entertainingly Wrong: In the manga, he initially believes that Violette repaired Claudia's cloak to earn favoritism with him only to be immediately shot down by Claudia himself much to his surprise.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite his initial dislike towards Violette, he did briefly feel some level of sympathy for her after she mentions that the people she spent time with are unlikely to bother associating with her anymore due her family situation causing her to no longer be considered a potential connection for them. He also expresses sympathy for Violette after he made somewhat aware of some specifics of her rocky family situation.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: While he acts civil towards Violette, the narration of the light novel makes it clear that he dislikes Violette for her past behavior. However, unlike other examples, Violette sees through this, and she's fully aware of Milania's distaste for her. Ironically, she is unaware in both the manga and the light novel that his opinion of her improves considerably in the new timeline.
  • Put on a Bus: He is mentioned in Volume Four of the Light Novel, but he doesn't appear.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: In the manga, he grows to show some favoritism towards the idea of Claudia and Violette getting together for practical purposes.

Foreign Royalty

    Gia

Prince Gia Forte

Third Prince of Sina and part of an exchange program that requires him to attend the academy throughout his schooling days until he graduates.
  • Big Eater: He is capable of consuming lots of food without worrying about his weight.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In the manga, Gia is taken aback by Yulan's comment that Violette doesn't have friends as he outright says that sounds a little harsh.
  • The Nicknamer: He tends to call Violette 'Princess' due to how much he knows Yulan treasures her.
  • Only Friend: The only person Gia even remotely considers a friend is Yulan, and that's because Yulan is indifferent towards the fact he's a prince rather than trying to get a connection with him.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: He is in favor of Violette and Yulan getting together, but he's not above flirting with Violette as well. However, he also likes shipping them because he enjoys the show that Yulan created, and it alleviates his boredom.
  • Spare to the Throne: Due to being the third prince, it is unlikely he'd ever inherit the throne, and he is casual about his school life because he's the spare.

    Rosette

Princess Rosette Megan

The Princess of Lithos. She is sent to the academy in hopes of becoming Prince Claudia's fiancé to strengthen the bonds between their respective countries. She loves reptiles, which most would consider unbecoming of a princess. When Violette discovers her secret and Violette decides to keep it a secret, they eventually become friends.

  • A Friend in Need: She was the most concerned over Violette’s prolonged absence following her father physically harming her. She listens to Violette’s story of what happened to her, and she does her best to support her.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Her role is slightly altered in her relationship with Claudia in the manga and light novel. In the third light novel, she and Claudia apparently became engaged off-screen in secret. It doesn't become officially public until partway through Volume 4, so it was technically 'pending' for several months. By comparison, in the manga she and Claudia haven't become engaged, and she attends a marriage interview with him. Ironically, in Volumes 3 and 4 of the Light Novels, they haven't interacted on screen while they have met in Volume 4 of the manga.
  • Ambiguously Bi: After becoming friends with Violette, she becomes quite attached to her. In the manga, Rosette almost sees herself falling for Violette's charm. Volume 3 and 4 of the Light Novels showcase she has a strong degree of affection for Violette.
  • Embarrassing Hobby: While Rosette isn't actually embarrassed by it, she's aware that her love for reptiles isn't considered proper for noble ladies let alone a princess. She knows that if someone were to find out that and expose her hobby, it would harm her reputation and marriage prospects. It is why she comes to greatly appreciate Violette for not only keeping her secret, but helping her embrace her hobby without others noticing her.
  • False Friend: Discussed and subverted. In the light novel, Yulan confronts her under the impression she is one towards Violette due to Rosette’s pending engagement to Prince Claudia. While Rosette indicates she did partly become friends to keep an eye on Violette, she does legitimately care about her.
  • Only Friend: Aside from her Childhood Friend, Yulan, and her maid, Marin, both of whom are in love with her, Rosette is Violette's only real friend.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She entered the academy to become engaged to Claudia in order to create a military alliance between their home countries, so no other country would consider invading her homeland.
  • Secret-Keeper: Violette and Rosette become friends due to them both learning secrets about the other and promising to keep them to themselves.
  • Secret Test of Character: In the manga, she outright admits to Violette she was testing her reaction to how Violette would react to the idea that she was attempting to win over Prince Claudia to which Violette showed her support. Rosette apologizes for what she did. In the light novel, she is tentatively engaged to Claudia, and she is partly motivated to be friends with Violette to keep an eye on her, but she does legitimately feel friendship towards her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When she is confronted by Yulan in Volume 3 of the Light Novel regarding her intentions of becoming friends with Violette, she calls out his need for control. Unlike other scenarios, she becomes unnerved by how unphased he is by this.
