Reincarnators

    "Kumoko"

"Kumoko"

"No way, no way, no way, no wayyy~...!"

Kumoko is the unofficial name of the protagonist, a girl who reincarnated as a spider inside a deep labyrinth. She finds that she actually takes rather well to the monster filled dungeon she lives inside and accepts the RPG world at face value without a second thought.

She has a reclusive personality and is an obvious huge fan of anime and RPGs, spouting constant references. Inside her head. Since she can't speak. And is entirely alone. For about 150 chapters of web novel or over 30 chapters of manga. She's intelligent and inventive, but also incredibly careless and with some rather skewed morals.

    Shun

Schlain "Shun" Zagan Analeit (Formerly: Yamada Shunsuke)

Voiced by: Shun Horie (Japanese), Alejandro Saab (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shun_anime.png

The classic isekai protagonist with a strong moral compass, a hard working and honest personality and great respect for the sanctity of life. He reincarnated as the fourth prince of a mid sized kingdom alongside a half sister named Sue, earning great renown early in life for his apparent genius thanks to getting a head start. Unfortunately, he finds himself at odds first with a jealous former classmate and later a dark conspiracy among the demon army.

He greatly respects his older brother Julius, The Hero of humanity, and is shocked when his brother is killed and he succeeds the title himself.

Collects a growing harem for himself, but is mostly oblivious.

  • Adaptational Dumbass: In the anime, he appears to be ignorant of many things about his world, despite the fact that he has grown up there. This is not the case in the light novel source material where he is the one providing world building and other exposition to the reader through the narration of the human-side chapters. In fact, he figures out that Katia is one of his reincarnated classmates on his own, before he knew that he wasn't the only one reincarnated.
  • And I Must Scream: In the light novel, he shares what it is like to be a fully self-aware infant without any ability to move or speak, and thus totally at the mercy of any older person who happens to be in the room with him. He was only able to endure this because infant Sue was nearby and he didn't want to look lame in front of his younger sister.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: If he actually tried to fight his personal Big Bad Shiraori in an attempt to protect humanity, it's more likely than not he'll kill everyone. Due to his [Hero] title powering him up with the planet's energy reserves when facing a god, the planet will be bled dry and crack in half, killing every last living being on the planet. Other than Shiraori, who would either teleport away or be actively protected by "D".
  • The Beastmaster: He has the Creature Training skill due to his time with Fei and he quotes the adage about never calling up a monster that you cannot put down. His contract with Fei only works because they have mututal trust.
  • Big Brother Instinct: When he was an infant, he resolved to be the kind of big brother that Sue could admire. He succeeded to the point that she admired him as much as he himself admired Julius. In fact, she admires him a little too much for his comfort.
  • Big Brother Worship: He idolizes his brother Julius a lot, and is completely devastated when he acquires the Hero title himself, as it also signifies the death of his brother.
  • Character Tics: He has a habit to scratch his cheek.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Shun is completely oblivious to Katia's blatant feelings towards him, largely due to still registering her as being Kanata. The light novel has a page where Fei blushes when Shun hugs her while the group is changing out of wet clothes, indicating she is developing feelings towards him as well despite her insistence to Katia that she isn't. He is aware of Sue's incestuous feelings towards him, but ignores them hoping she would get over him.
  • Cosmic Plaything: He never really catches on, but he only does as well as he does because his role as The Hero amuses "D". She manipulates and forces the situation to give him influence wildly beyond what he should be capable of. Shiraori is also moving him about as she pleases. The only reason he survives that is because A. she's actively trying to keep him alive and B. she doesn't really take much notice of him because she considers him unimportant beyond the effect he has on the System. Meanwhile, Gyurie and Sariel are also influencing the world through him, one of them as a guide figure and the other as a more direct patron.
  • Deuteragonist: Shun slowly evolves into one as the story progresses. While Sophia and Wrath are important characters, they tend to simply follow the protagonist Shiraori's lead while Shun instead has his own goals and effect on the world at large. In the Web Novel, the Final Battle arc is in fact mostly about Shun's side's attempts to defeat Shiraori's faction, and ultimately failing.
  • Failure Hero: Shun wins skirmishes with monsters without much trouble, but in almost every important fight he has against another named character, he ends up losing. Even the fight in which he humiliates Hugo is ultimately a meaningless duel since Hugo himself is merely a pawn in someone else's web. Even near the end of the Web Novel, where he actually manages to catch Shiro off-guard and destroy her main body with the Hero's Sword, he ends up failing right at the finish line when Shiro's emergency body ambushes him, knocks him out and then fulfills her victory condition, with Shun having nothing to show for all his struggles.
  • God Was My Copilot: He seems to have Sariel's favor. She goes out of her way to give him prophetic dreams and fills in the blanks in Taboo, which allows him to keep his mental stability and moral compass. In the light novel she even tries to tell him who and what Shiraori really is but he doesn't understand.
  • Good Is Dumb: Wrath, Katia and Oka-chan to varying degrees admire Shun's courage, heroism and refusal to kill, but even the latter two privately consider his kindness to be an obstacle to work around, not an attitude to be emulated. That being said, his extreme insistence on pacifism is not entirely his fault: His Ruler title has great influence over him due to the soul warping effects of the ability not being counteracted by Heresy Resistance like the other Rulers have picked up.
  • Hero Antagonist:
    • Shun is pretty much flawlessly heroic and moral and is an up and coming star inspiring his other classmates and presumably the world at large, or will be when he becomes better known. However, because he isn't the protagonist, this makes up the implied central conflict of the story. While there are two potential ways to save the world, Shiraori's is more destructive but avoids basically murdering a pair of gods who have given everything to protect the world. Shun does find this distasteful, however, and seems to want to find a third golden solution that saves the world and Sariel with minimal or no sacrifices.
    • He has a moral opposition to Wrath and Shiraori because he tends to be very judgmental when it comes to upholding his personal moral code. However, his view basically falls apart when you look at his best friend's upbringing in this world where the choice was either be a slave forever or slaughter a bunch of soldiers and villagers. Shun never had to face the kind of difficult life Wrath did and realizes after their argument that he alienated his best friend without even trying to understand him.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: After being thoroughly humbled in the Elf War, Shun begins nurturing a sense of self-pity as he realizes just how far out of his depth he is in the conflict he tried to muscle his way into. He ends up adopting a similar stance to Wrath in how far he's willing to go to do what he believes is right.
  • Idiot Hero:
    • Shun shows signs of this, acting recklessly when faced with massively powerful monsters, allowing enemies to live, and charging into obvious traps. The rest of his party warns him about these tendencies but go along with it anyway.
    • Shiraori, during their meeting with the other reincarnators, even thinks that her regular rank & file soldiers are enough to deal with Shun, though to be fair they're part of her Elite Army.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Non-villainous example. Shun has his comedic moments but because he lacks Kumoko's comedic quirks, events focused on him are far more serious.
  • Light Is Good: His strongest attribute is the light element and he's easily the most heroic character in the story barring Sariel.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:Prior to joining the academy, he spent his entire life in his father's castle, and interacted with few people outside of his immediate family, Fei and Katia. This is because his step-mother, the queen (Sue's mother), wanted to keep him isolated. Her rivals at court wanted to use the younger brother of Julius The Hero against her.
  • Making a Splash: Water is one of his stronger attributes, and he learns water magic just from casting a spell from a enchanted wand a single time.
  • Messianic Archetype: Viewed from the other side. While he's certainly all about doing the right thing, hates violence, gets persecuted, betrayed and so on yet sticks to his values, from the perspective of Shiraori's group he's just a sheltered moron who never had to struggle, so they tend to dismiss his moral opinions. It's still up in the air which party is actually right or if either is wrong.
  • Neutral No Longer: Surprisingly for someone who is so obviously The Hero, he doesn't actually have any particular vested interest or opinion on the Shiro/Dustin conflict because he knows that he doesn't really understand what's going on, neither of them is strictly good or bad. He doesn't even hold a grudge against Shiro for killing his brother. In the end, he ends up siding with Dustin because of Shiro's ever critical flaw of failing to communicate: He was very slightly inclined towards Dustin's plan anyway and then Dustin actually made time to appeal to him directly. And while Shun can't possibly stand up to the likes of even the weakest named characters in Shiro's party, he does have just enough ability to tip the scales in Dustin's favor and force Shiro into playing her final trump card in order to succeed, at great personal cost.
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: Shun doesn't seem to want to think about Katia's feelings for him partially out of denial and partially because she's quite aggressive.
  • No Listening Skills: Shun outright refuses to listen to others' warnings and advice about him needing to back off from a fight he clearly can't win.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: He's held up as exceptional among the humans, but this is only because he has a completely intact soul unlike the natives and works very hard, though only through normal understandable means. The rest of the world are barely eking by with crippled souls that greatly stunt their growth. Outside of the human kingdoms, he really isn't that big of a deal: Many monsters vastly outclass him, Potimas's robot army is far beyond his ability to deal with and even Shiraori's lieutenants do not consider him an actual threat. Up until the war with the elves he was starting to get the impression that he was something of a big shot - though still humble about it - only to realize that he's no match at all even against Wrath or Sophia, let alone Ariel or Shiro.
  • Oblivious to Love: Shun doesn't realize the girls he's attracting are not solely interested in him as a friend. He may be playing dumb with Katia, because the idea makes him uncomfortable since he still sees Katia as his best friend from Japan, and actually has recognized how his sister feels, but he's not on board at all for it.
  • Pinball Protagonist: Shun spends most of his life in idleness, mostly only reacting to the events happening around him. Even when it looks like he's making a stand, his movements are actually being subtly influenced or directed by the schemers in the background of the story, in no small part because they are actively accounting for him, and because an avatar of Gyulie is in his party, keeping an eye on him at all times.
  • Selective Obliviousness: He does know that his sister is in love with him, but is entirely uncomfortable with this and ignores it as best as he can. It's not entirely clear as to whether he genuinely hasn't noticed that Katia has changed a lot since her previous life or is simply pretending he doesn't know because he relies on her for emotional grounding.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: As one of the princes in his country, he experienced few hardships before joining the academy. Even compared to other noble-born reincarnators, he was sheltered, because the queen forbid him from getting involved in affairs of state. This makes his perspective very different from other reincarnators, and causes him some trouble with one of his best friends from his former life.
  • Skilled, but Naive: After the battle in the elf village he scolds himself for thinking he was some bigshot just because he had the Hero title and failing to realize that his personal hero Julius could only do so much despite being the previous hero. While the current failure doesn't bother him since he seems to have a basic acceptance that the genocide of the elves was probably necessary he resolves to think things through more clearly when it comes to achieving his goals of bringing peace and happiness and so on.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: As noted above, he shows all the classic symptoms of an isekai hero: Starts off overpowered, rapidly unlocks new abilities, unknowingly builds a harem, has a strong sense of justice, and so on. The twist being that he's only the Deuteragonist while Kumoko is the actual protagonist.
  • Stupid Good: Even when Hugo is at Shun's mercy and there's nothing he can do to really stop him from continuing his assholery, Shun still refuses to kill him. However, this is explicitly because his Ruler skill is screwing with his head. Notably, even his closest allies privately consider him far too softhearted.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome:
    • One of the main reasons Shun put the effort to stand out is precisely because he recognized Sue's talent, so he worked hard to be worthy of being her older brother.
    • After Julius dies and Shun inherits his Hero title, he knows he has big shoes to fill and won't likely ever be as great of a Hero as Julius was.
  • Sunk Cost Fallacy: In the Web Novel, he ends up adopting a similar attitude to Wrath, ironically. By the time he finally lays eyes upon Sariel and fully understands why Ariel's faction considers the humans ungrateful beyond words, he's in too deep. He's sacrificed too much, given too much of himself and watched too many people sacrifice themselves to stop following Dustin's plan at this stage, no matter how unsettled he feels.
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: Shun is an inversion, oddly enough. He's The Hero of the story and something like the deuteragonist or tritagonist, but comes off as self righteous, spoiled, close minded, stubborn, impractical, delusional and so on because of the story he's in despite his selflessness and genuine heroism. Yet for all his (debatable) flaws and lack of appeal compared to the more interesting Shiro faction, he's the only one in the story who is actually trying to come up with less catastrophic solutions than the ones Shiro and Dustin have thought up. But good luck finding someone who likes him more than her.
  • Take Up My Sword: When he is notified of his acquisition of the Hero skill, he realizes two things. 1.) His older brother Julius is dead and 2.) he is now supposed to step into his older brother Julius's role.
  • Unknown Rival: He's a central figure to the forces opposing Shiraori, but not only does she not treat him as a threat, she even goes out of her way to keep him away from danger or outright protect him at points. He commands no actual respect from her and even her most basic mooks are beyond his ability to deal with.
  • Utility Party Member: Due to his Mercy skill, Shun becomes one during the battle in the Great Elro Labyrinth as Wrath activates his Wrath skill and easily slaughters the ancient dragons accompanying Shun and Katia.

    Katia

Karnatia "Katia" Seri Anabald (Formerly: Ooshima Kanata)

Voiced by: Nao Tōyama (Japanese), Kira Buckland (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/karnatia_anime.png

Formerly a male friend of Shun's. Kanata was reincarnated into the other world as a girl named Katia, much to her annoyance. While Kanata is strongly implied to have been in love with Shun even before reincarnating, as Katia she has no trouble being rather aggressive in pursuing him.

She holds a position inside a duke's family and met similar awe as Shun when her immense talents showed themselves early in life.

  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Kanata became the buxom beauty Katia after reincarnating. D figures this is because Katia was a male in her previous life, so her female hormones overcompensated. Katia herself has conflicted feelings about her body.
  • Back from the Dead: She really died escaping Hugo's brainwashing. Shun brought her back with Ruler of Mercy.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a well-endowed figure, much to D's chagrin who sabotaged the Reincarnators so they couldn't be bigger than her.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She tends to really hate it when she sees any competition for Shun, real or imagined. She's particularly jealous towards Feirune once she attains a humanoid form, scowling when she notices them being close and yanking them away from each other.
  • Closet Gay: Ooshima Kanata was most likely gay. To deny this and make everyone believe he was straight, he confessed to a girl that he knew would turn him down. Unfortunately, that girl happened to be a god, so she decided to reincarnate him as a girl when he died, most likely out of irritation or because she thought it'd be funny. His gender identity eventually changed to match his new female body while his sexual orientation remains attracted to men.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Katia has ruby-red hair and red eyes.
  • Deflector Shields: By sacrificing nearly all of her stats and skills, Katia becomes a Ruler and gains the skill [Chastity], which creates a safe zone that guards against both attacks and debilitating effects. It's not an absolute defense since it can be broken through with sheer brute force, but it is resilient enough that it can even block magecraft attacks below a certain output. However, one can still cause damage by entering the safe zone and attacking those inside directly.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Katia has red hair and fire is her strongest magic affinity. She also has Elemental Eye Colors since her eyes are red as well.
  • Expository Pronoun: Katia uses the very masculine ore to refer to herself in Japanese, along with using very masculine speech patterns to reflect that she was a guy during her previous life in Japan. She later switches to a more feminine way of speaking when she comes to accept herself as a woman, including the succeeding changes to the pronouns she uses.
  • First Law of Gender Bending: As with similar changes brought by reincarnation, Kanata/Katia becoming female is accepted as irreversible.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Zig-Zagged. Having been reborn as the daughter of a duke, Katia normally uses very formal speech patterns, right down to using the highly formal first-person pronoun "watakushi". However, she turns into an Ore Onna when speaking to her fellow reincarnators because she was a guy in her past life.
  • Gender Bender Angst: Kanata was male and Katia is female, so for most of her life, Katia identified as male. This eventually came to an end due to a dissociation side-effect of Hugo brainwashing her and then her breaking free of said brainwashing. However, Shun (possibly intentionally) continues to see her as male, much to her frustration.
  • Heroic Willpower: Ruler of Lust is stated to be one of the higher-end brainwashing skills, yet she successfully fought against it for several seconds because she refused to harm her friends. This was enough time for her to kill herself.
  • Ignore the Fanservice: Yuri initially gets angry at her for entering the girl's changing room, only to be met with an unconcerned offer from Katia to change elsewhere if it bothers her. From that, Yuri came to realize that however things had worked in their previous life, Katia was definitely not into girls now.
  • Jumping the Gender Barrier: Kanata was one of Shun's guy friends back in Japan. After Kanata reincarnates as Katia, she becomes a girl with a crush on Shun. It's also implied Kanata already felt attracted to Shun even before becoming Katia.
  • Karmic Transformation: In a very disproportionate sense of "karmic". Kanata tried to use a girl to make people think he wasn't gay. He succeeded, in the sense that she turned Kanata into a girl, so now most people wouldn't see Katia that way for loving Shun.
  • Keystone Army: Using her unique skill, she sacrifices the majority of her combat ability to gain the points to buy the Chastity Ruler skill, a necessary key to shutting down the System. With this, Shiraori has to deal with her in some way. Should Katia be killed or give up her Authority, the human side is that much closer to losing.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Shun makes it clear several times that he relies on Katia for his emotional grounding. No matter what else has changed, he still has one of his best friends alongside him and nothing has changed about their relationship, nope.
  • Making a Splash: She claims that she does better with fire magic than water magic. Despite this, Shun notes that her conjured water spheres hit their targets perfectly.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Because he reincarnated from a male into a female, Kanata originally experienced some gender dysphoria. However, growing up female caused him to begin to develop a more feminine personality, and as time went on he grew to actually identify as female more and more until the remaining scraps of his male gender identity literally vanished as a means of fighting back against a charm spell that was affecting the dominant female identity.
  • Multi-Gendered Split Personalities: A comparatively short-term version: Despite their change in physical body from reincarnation, Kanata/Katia continued identifying as male for most of their new life. Developing/realizing romantic feelings for Shun caused them to start thinking of themselves more as a girl. This causes enough dissociation between male and female identities to manifest the Parallel Will skill to resist Hugo's mind control. This succeeds, but ends up erasing the male identity. When Katia's body died, only the female mind revived.
  • Ojou: Reincarnated as the daughter of a duke. When she speaks the local language, Shun notes that she does in "a register befitting an aristocratic young lady". (When she speaks in Japanese, she uses a more masculine inflection.)
  • Playing with Fire: She prefers to use fire magic in combat.
  • Properly Paranoid: She does not trust others as quickly or as easily as Shun, and is even suspicious of Filimøs in the earlier chapters for being so secretive. True enough, Filimøs was involved in something of dubious morality. Namely, kidnapping and otherwise securing the reincarnators and then bringing them to the elf village for safe keeping. The main reason she entered the magic academy was to keep an eye on students whose social standing was too high for her to collect them.
  • Reincarnated as the Opposite Sex: Katia was reincarnated as a girl despite being a boy in Japan. She's rather put-out to learn everyone else reincarnated as their original gender. In the light novel, one of her parallel minds stays dead when Shun revived her, and that mind was the male one.
  • Second Law of Gender-Bending: Even beyond the purely biological component, Kanata becomes more and more comfortable identifying as the female Katia over time, with the remains of his identity as a male literally disappearing as a plot point. Not having to worry anymore about being in the closet regarding his affection for Shun might help.
  • Sobriquet Sex Switch: Kanata reincarnated as a girl named Karnatia (Katia for short).
  • Tomboyish Voice: Zig-Zagged. Katia usually speaks in a feminine voice, but she uses a deeper voice when talking to other reincarnators because they knew her when she was a guy in her past life. After her male personality dies, she uses her feminine voice more often, but still slips into the deeper one occasionally.

    Oka

Filimøs "Oka" Harrifenas (Formerly: Okazaki Kanami)

Voiced by: Kaya Okuno (Japanese), Cherami Leigh (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/filimos_anime.png

The teacher of the reincarnated students, nicknamed Oka-chan by her students, is the only reincarnator to be born among the elves. She is the daughter of their leader, Potimas, who has been aware of her status since birth. She's working desperately hard to try and find and protect the students who were under her care, though she acknowledges that this is mostly a coping mechanism. She has a fondness for spiders and acts intentionally cutesy and wacky to be liked by her students, though she's become rather tough and pragmatic by the time she reunites with Shun.

She was able to find almost all the students before the story began and, with the exception of the main and supporting cast, brought them to live under the protection of the elves.

  • A-Cup Angst: It's implied that Oka was reincarnated into an elf because she was tiny and had a childlike figure as a teacher and elves have the stereotype for being slender. She still has hope in the future.
Oka: (About being the one with smallest chest) It’s only because my growth rate is slow! I have hopes for the future.
Narrator: (About elf anatomy) Yet, the elves have the standard pattern of having small breasts.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Potimas is her biological father in her current life, but she only calls him by his name because they don't consider each other family.
  • Defector from Decadence: In the Web Novel, Oka originally planned to support Dustin and Gulie, since her Student Roster predicted Shiro's plan would kill her students, but when the cause of death suddenly changes to "death by dragon attack", she instead sides with Ariel and Shiraori for the final battle, as Dustin mysteriously decides to eliminate the Reincarnators residing in the Elf Village by ordering a flight of dragons to attack them. In exchange for her cooperation, Ariel grants Oka and her students use of the UFO Potimas built and its weaponry, plus support from some of her Puppet Taratects, to defend themselves from the dragons.
  • Failure Knight: Oka-chan, the reincarnated teacher, constantly worries about her short-comings as a teacher and the students she has failed to protect or guide properly. As a result she throws herself into defending her students even more fiercely. Given that the Elves are led by Potimas, the closest thing there is to an antagonist in the story, she failed the moment she was born as his daughter. Shiro's attempts to cheer her up fail completely, which depresses both of them.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: She always uses formal Japanese, even when speaking to her fellow Reincarnators. This might have somehing to do with her being a teacher in her past life and her still seeing herself as the adult responsible for her students, even though they're all the same age as her in their current lives.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: None of her reincarnated students are fond of her, with good reason since she has made very poor choices after being reincarnated while trying to control her students' actions because she still thinks of herself as their teacher and them as children even though she doesn't really know better than them in their current situation. Most of the students who were gathered at the elf village hate her, especially Sachi, who knows the elves have kidnapped them from their new families. Shun's party is particularly suspicious of her due to her cryptic behavior. Wrath and Sophia also dislike her, and only restrain themselves from hurting her due to Shiraori's orders.
  • Friend to Bugs: She saved a spider from being killed by her students and allowed it to stay in the homeroom as a sort of class pet. Said spider later repays her for saving her in their next lives.
  • Girlish Pigtails: On Earth, Oka-chan wore her hair long aside from a small set of pigtails. After reincarnating, she wears all of her hair in oversized pigtails, to illustrate her more youthful appearance.
  • Heroic BSoD: After Shiraori reveals that Potimas only gathered the reincarnations for his own nefarious gains, she describes Oka-chan as having hollow and lifeless eyes and lets Kushitani to take care of Oka.
  • Heroic Neutral: She is generally well meaning and wants to do good, but her priority is whatever is most likely to keep her students alive and safe. For that reason, she is willing to stain her hands and resort to unsavory methods even if very reluctantly on Potimas' urging. In the Web Novel's final arc she is forced to choose a side for good and she joins Ariel and Shiraori ultimately because Dustin chose to get rid of her students for his own plans.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Many of the reincarnations resent or outright hate her for basically sending the elves to kidnap them and keep them confined in an isolated village. Oka-chan herself has stated that she feels guilty for having forced them into this situation, but she ignores it by validating her actions as necessary to keep them safe from the dangers of the other world.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: She really wants to be honest with her students about her special skill "class roster", but one of its conditions refuses to let her tell anyone about it. This causes her much distress.
  • Last of Her Kind: After the forest of the elves is invaded and destroyed, she's the last remaining pure blooded elf.
  • Logical Weakness: Her special skill helps her monitor the students as analyzed by the System, including what it predicts will happen to them. It's both powerful and inadequate at the same time. The problem comes when students aren't in the System, which removes their name from the roster. This leads her to assume that 'Wakaba Hiiro' is dead because her name vanished from the records during apparent infancy. But that's not the only way to leave: Tracking Wakaba actually means tracking Kumoko, and Kumoko left the System by becoming a god, not dying. By that point she had been active for over a year rather than just a few months.
  • Morality Pet: While Shiraori is protective of all the reincarnators within reasonable limits as well as Ariel, she has a special soft spot for Oka-chan and works hard to keep her safe, including saving her from possession and offering a complete, unaltered explanation of the System and why she intends to bring it down. Even Sophia and Wrath had to really work to get that information and most likely still don't have as complete of a picture as sensei.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Oka has this reaction when she injures Yuri while being taunted by Hugo during the battle of Elf Village.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Oka finds spiders cute. She even thinks the Nightmare's Vestiges are cute, though she finds the way they speak to be unpleasant.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: Oka gathers most of the reincarnations in the elf village in order to ensure their safety and avoid their deaths predicted by her "Student Roster" skill, bloodying her hands in the process. However, most of the students she has "protected" firmly believe she's in the wrong as her actions resulted in the elves either buying them or outright kidnapping them from their families and keeping them prisoners in the elf village. Also, unbeknownst to her, Potimas has targeted and killed reincarnations he labeled too dangerous, resulting in Issei's death and Sophia almost meeting the fate if it wasn't for Kumoko saving her.
  • Older Than She Looks: Oka-chan is the same age as the rest of the B-team, but due to being a long-lived elf, she looks roughly the age of an elementary school student.
  • Pacifism Backfire: Sparing Hugo caused him to provoke a coup in Shun's home country, leading to the purge of many high nobles including the king as well as the brainwashing of many more, including Sue. He then took an army and marched on the forest of the elves. Oka badly regrets this decision, though Shun is still inclined to be merciful. This is only partially Hugo's fault, however, as the people killed were actually all beyond saving anyway. The elves were also one of the most dangerous, unsympathetic and radical groups in the world, though probably not deserving of the genocide they got.
  • Pointy Ears: She has the long and pointy ears that all elves have.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Oka-chan is constantly cryptic about some of the things she knows thanks to her skill, even going out of her way to tell Shun, Katia and Fei to not try to grow their skills. Her response when asked why is her repeating that it's a secret and simply demanding their trust on it, which ends up falling flat in the wake of their extreme circumstances and Shun's inclination to fulfill his Hero title.
  • Pride: Oka still thinks of herself as "the adult" who is responsible for her reincarnated students. So instead of relying on the others and asking if they might have insight on their situation, she automatically assumes she knows better than they do.
  • Secret-Keeper: Shiraori gives her the unvarnished truth about herself, the system, and everything that's happening to the world. Oka-chan doesn't tell anybody else, but that doesn't stop her from trying to act on the information.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Her skill "Student Roster" supposedly predicts the fate her students will meet in the other world, including their deaths. Wishing to keep her students safe, Oka asked for Potimas' help in gathering the students in the elf village. Unfortunately, relying on Potimas and the elves resulted in her students being in danger anyway, since Potimas either keeps them prisoner or tries to have them killed if their skills are too dangerous. This also resulted in some of her students joining the demon side and having to fight each other later on. One specific case in point happens in volume 5: Oka reveals in her interlude that Hugo is going to die in the Battle Of the Elf Village, which warranted her earlier action of stripping off his skills and sparing him after rescuing Shun when Hugo decides to kill him due to envy. The series of events culminated in Hugo eventually taking power and invading the Elf Village.
  • Sensei-chan: Oka-chan was the class teacher, who was seen as somewhat childish and "regrettable" but all in all liked. She intentionally cultivated this personality to try to connect with children but feared it hurt her credibility.
  • Shipper on Deck: She finds Katia's affections for Shun highly amusing and seems supportive.
  • Stepford Smiler: She pretends to be a wacky immature teacher so that her students will open up to her. While it really has affected her personality somewhat, deep down she's still very insecure and has a tendency to hide things. Unfortunately, her students have started noticing.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's the youngest-looking of the reincarnations, resembling a preteen girl, despite being reincarnated at the same time. Since she was reborn as an elf, she ages more slowly.
  • Tongue-Tied: Her "Student Roster" skill comes with the proviso of her not being allowed to talk about it with her students.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Oka asking help from the elves to gather the reincarnations has unintentionally screwed over the lives of Sophia Keren and Hugo
    • Towards Sophia, Potimas decides to kill her and cover-up the incident as a by-product of the War on Sariella due to Sophia acquiring the skill Vampire Progenitor. He fails due to Kumoko's interference but it ensured on Sophia's hatred towards the elven race.
    • Towards Hugo, since Sakurazaki Issei is Hugo's Best Friend and the one who understood Hugo well, Oka unintentionally becomes the sole perpetrator of Hugo's Start of Darkness since Issei is killed by Potimas due to him being the highest specced reincarnation, surpassing Shun, and Issei's special skill Dungeon Creation (which as the name suggests, creates dungeons and powerful monsters) is considered as the most dangerous amongst the reincarnations.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In volume 10, D reveals that Oka's unique skill "Student Roster" isn't particularly reliable since it only gives partial information, including the deaths of the reincarnations, with D often tampering it with false info. D even sinisterly laughs and insults her for fully trusting such an unreliable list and actually sending the reincarnations towards their own deaths due to Potimas, earning Shiraori's anger towards D.
  • Verbal Tic: She extends the last sound in the word at the end of her sentences. She is supposedly emulating a character from an in-universe story. Shun's narrative explains this as part of the "regrettable" behavior she had (as mentioned in Sensei-chan).

    Hugo Baint von Renxandt

A student who was reincarnated as the prince of the mightiest human empire in the world. However, his position and abilities have left him highly conceited. He secretly feels out of place and lonely, causing him to resent the more popular Shun.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Hugo genuinely believed the entire world was a dream and got carried away playing his role. He never really understood the things he was doing were evil and planned to be more humble when he woke up. Many of his decisions were driven largely by his loneliness and jealousy of Shun for having friends.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: After Oka-chan depowers him, Hugo concludes that if he can't be the hero of the story, he'll settle for being the villain so he can kill Shun. He's constantly manipulated and used by multiple parties from this point onward while still believing himself to be the one in control.
  • Deliberately Bad Example: He's is the archetype of the isekai protagonist who believes that the world exists to satisfy his wish-fullfillment, and thus he should be over-powered, everyone should faun over him (especially cute girls), and he should be a high-ranking special person, and finally, that anyone who gets in the way of his power fantasy deserves to be crushed under his boot. The end result is that he is a self-entitled jerkass whom no one likes, who resorts to brainwashing. None of the other reincarnators act this way, not even the humans born into human noble families and/or with special abilities.
  • Drunk with Power: After reincarnating Hugo came to believe the world existed for his sake alone as proved by his special Skill and his number of Skill Points. He hates anyone who could ruin this narrative by having comparable strength and won't hesitate to kill them.
  • Evil Is Petty: He brainwashed Yuri because he was mad at her getting too friendly with Shun.
  • It's All About Me: Hugo believes the entire world was created for him to live out an epic adventure. Tragically, he believed that it was all a dream and that he should be the main star of his own dream; becoming a villain was just his way to take that role back.
  • Off with His Head!: In the Web Novel, Hugo is killed by Wrath by the latter stomping his right foot unto Hugo's head.
  • Redemption Rejection: Oka-chan tried to show him mercy so that he'd realize the error of his ways, but he never even considered the idea.
  • Revenge Myopia: He tries to murder Shun with a very, very poorly thought up Engineered Heroics, showing up to kill the monster he himself unleashed, but being too late to save him. When he's caught red-handed, and got the skills he abused taken away, rather than learning his lesson, he becomes obsessed with taking revenge on both Shun, who did nothing to him, and Oka-chan, by destroying everything they care for, right in their faces, and then killing them.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: He takes control of the empire and becomes something of the neighborhood bully, even throwing a coup in Shun's country and declaring war on the elves. His father and especially grandfather were much more noble and reasonable men.
  • The Von Trope Family: He's the heir of a royal family with "Von" attached to their name.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Even with the most charitable interpretation of Hugo, he's still the kind of person that when absolved of responsibility for his actions, takes great pleasure in murdering and, as implied by his Lust title, raping his way across the land.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Due to being reincarnated into a prince of the most powerful human empire, he thinks he is the Stock Light-Novel Hero of the story complete with all the perks that come with it, unaware that he is in actuality a side character meant to prop up the real main human protagonist, Shun. He even takes it a step further by thinking that it is all a dream he is having, rather than coming to terms that he actually died.

    Fei

Feirune "Fei" (Formerly: Shinohara Mirei)

Click here to see her humanoid form

Originally a human girl, she reincarnated as a dragon. However, she took eight years to hatch out of her egg and was conscious for at least part of this time. She considers being born a monster instead of a human punishment for trying to bully Wakaba Hiiro. She accepts being called Feirune instead of Mirei because she considers herself to be a pet after reincarnating to make up for her past misdeeds.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her scales are described as black in the web-novel, but in the anime she's given bluish-purple scales.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Fei was reincarnated as a human in the web novel, but a wyrm in subsequent adaptations.
  • Ascended Extra: Fei is technically in the web novel, but she's just one of the students in the elf village and has no significant role. In the light novel, she's a recurring character and part of Shun's group. According to the author, you should consider the two to be different characters.
  • The Atoner: Fei being reborn as a dragon was pretty terrible for her, possibly in part because it took her years to hatch. She decides to take it as punishment for being a bully towards Wakaba Hiiro and to take the chance to reform herself and loyally serve whoever hatched her. She may be completely correct, too, because while Wakaba Hiiro AKA "D" wouldn't care about a human bullying her, turning her into a dragon of all things does seem like it was intended as a kind of 'screw you' gesture: “D” hates dragons.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Fei gets attached to Shun early on because while his sister thought she wasn't cute, Shun actually likes reptiles and adopted her.
  • The Big Girl: She tends to provide muscle for the group, though the limitations caused by her physique cause problems that cancel out that advantage, at least until she becomes a Cute Monster Girl.
  • Breath Weapon: While practicing magic with the rest of the reincarnates, she fires a water bullet spell from her mouth. She later develops a full-blown draconic Wave-Motion Gun breath.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Downplayed. Though she could only vaguely realize something was very scary about her victim, the person she constantly bullied out of jealousy was one of the most dreaded gods in all of existence, "D". Fei eventually gets turned into a monster instead of a human for her trouble, and seemingly because "D" felt Fei would fit in well with an annoying group like the dragons, rather than because "D" actually cared about seriously punishing Fei for annoying her.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She eventually gains a human form, but it has wings, some scales and occasional feathers. She can still pass for human if she just puts on a cloak to cover the wings, though.
  • Delightful Dragon: Shinohara is reincarnated as a Elro Kolift named Feirune, being gifted to Shun — one of her reincarnated classmates — as a pet and familiar, and unlike most wyrms and dragons is friendly and helpful. She grows from the size of a cat to the size of a large dog, and after Shun becomes a Hero she metamorphoses into a winged Light Wyrm.
  • Familial Cannibalism Surprise: The first dragon she takes down and eats in the anime turns out to have been her own kin.
  • Familiar: She is officially Shun's familiar, and it was her idea to make the familiar contract. As part of her The Atoner plan, she wants to be able to reach Shun whenever he is in trouble.
  • Feathered Dragons: After becoming a Light Wyrm, she gains feathered wings.
  • Genki Girl: After gaining her humanoid form, she becomes more energetic and hyper, something the group take note of and think is like how she was back before she was reincarnated.
  • Girly Bruiser: Especially after evolving and gaining the ability to turn into a Cute Monster Girl at will. Fei is the most traditionally feminine member of Shun's party, and also the one that uses her sheer strength and durability to punch dragons into walls.
  • Had to Be Sharp: As an Elroe Kolift, she doesn't like doing physical training with Shun and Katia, but does so anyway because she feels she had no choice. Between nearly being eaten by a spider when she was still in her egg, and the fact that that Elroe Kolifts don't live longer than ten years, she needs to get stronger, so she can kill monsters, gains levels and evolve into something with a longer life span.
"Unlike in Japan, you can be killed at any moment in this world, so you've got no choice but to get as strong as you can.
  • Hair Flip: As a dragon, she doesn't have hair but she still effects this trope by flipping her long ears to underscore something she says, such as a girl not wanting to evolve into a big and tough kind of dragon. She can do this properly again once she obtains a humanoid form, with its usual connotations of confidence and vanity.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Fei considers reincarnating as a non human to be punishment for being a jerk when she was alive. She decided to serve her human master faithfully as atonement. That her master turned out to be an actual classmate was something of a bonus.
  • Hide Your Otherness: After she acquires a humanoid form, Fei has to hide her feathered wings with clothing because her appearance resembles the goddess of the local church and people might brand her as a heretic for it.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Fei, after seeing Sophia for the first time, immediately knows how dangerous she is and retreats alongside Shun's party. And during the battle of the Elf Village, she never participated in the party's skirmish against Sophia & waits until Shun is out of combat to offer a surrender.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: After reincarnating, in contrast to her somewhat more classical Alpha Bitch personality from before, Fei takes her incarnation as a dragon to be a form of punishment for her treatment of Wakaba Hiiro and resolves to be a better person.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: When talking about Shun with Katia, Fei says she doesn't really consider human males attractive anymore thanks to her body. Normal Earth Dragons can't even tell the difference between two human faces. However, since she's never met another Earth Dragon she doesn't know whether she'd find them attractive or what to look for in one.
  • Parting-Words Regret: She was never able to come to terms with Wakaba Hiiro. She doesn't like her, but the news that she died before Fei could apologize shocks and depresses her. Of course, Wakaba Hiiro isn't dead and when she thinks they've met up again, she's actually just meeting someone that looks like her.
  • Reformed Bully: After reincarnating as a dragon, Fei regrets bullying Wakaba Hiiro in her past life and resolves to be nicer in her new life, even wanting to apologize to Wakaba if they ever meet again.
  • Reincarnated as a Non-Humanoid: After she died alongside her entire class in Japan, she was reborn as an Earth Wyrm.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: She thinks that becoming a dragon compared to the other well-off reincarnators was a sort of Laser-Guided Karma by God for her bullying of Wakaba Hiiro. She's technically correct, except Wakaba was actually the goddess "D", and it wasn't karma so much as it was a Disproportionate Retribution out of personal spite.
  • Self-Made Orphan: When a Fenegrad-type Earth wyrm attacks the Reincarnates while they are practising magic, Fei deals the finishing blow on it and is horrified when she gains the "Kin-Eater" skill — meaning the wyrm was one of her parents.
  • Shapeshifter Baggage: In her humanoid form she weighs just as much as does in drake form. People usually don't notice because she uses Heavy magic to make herself lighter. However, this doesn't work very well underwater.
  • Snarky Non-Human Sidekick: While usually chipper, Fei can dish out sarcastic quips, such as threatening to drop Shun and Katia unless they cease their "domestic dispute" while on her back.
  • Team Pet: Due to reincarnating as Shun's dragon familiar, she mainly plays the role of pet in his side of the story, as well as transport after she evolves and becomes able to fly. At least she gains a human form after her evolution.
  • Telepathy: Because she was born as a monster, she acquired Telepathy in order to speak to Shun and Katia. She can't read minds, but she can speak mind to mind.
  • Token Flyer: After evolving into a Light Wyrm, she's the only one able to fly in Shun's party.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: After she gains a humanoid form, she is outright stated to be the strongest person in Shun's group, demonstrating it with ease when she is able to punch a dragon back with one hit. However, she's not skilled in battle beyond her raw power, meaning the others tend to need to step in and help.
  • Weredragon: After her evolution, she becomes able to change from a dragon form to a humanoid form that looks like her body prior to her reincarnation, albeit with wings.
  • Winged Humanoid: Her most prominent draconic feature while using Humanification are her wings.

Yuri Ullen (Formerly: Hasebe Yuika)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuri_ullen_anime.png

A reincarnated student who was abandoned by her parents and raised by the Church of Ullen in Alleius. She is now a fanatical believer in the Word of God religion.

  • Cute and Psycho: Yuri is generally cute and nice, but she's also a religious fanatic who will eagerly kill anyone deemed a heretic.
  • Mystical White Hair: After reincarnating, she now has white hair and is a saint candidate for the Word of God religion.
  • Pocket Dimension: Her unique skill records her dreams and allows her to create a mini-dungeon in subspace based on said dreams, trapping those caught in it until they clear it. However, since the catalyst is a dream, she cannot control the dungeon.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Her Saint garment is a green dress with a slit up to the top of her thigh.
  • Shock and Awe: She can summon and control lightning.
  • Turn to Religion: She died in an explosion along the rest of her class and reincarnated in a fantasy world, only to be abandoned by her new parents. She was then raised by the church. There, she became a fervent follower of the Word of God as a way of coping.
  • The Unblinking: To further demonstrate the fact that Yuri isn't quite right in the head, the girl is never shown to blink, even for extended periods focused on her face.

    Sophia Keren

Sophia Keren (Formerly: Negishi Shouko)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sophia_keren.png

"That's right. Oh, and don't speak any further okay? I have no desire to listen to your opinion after all. Even if you have something you want to say I have no intention of listening. If you want me to listen even still then go ahead and use force to silence me and make me listen. I bet you can't though."

In her previous life, she was a social outcast due to her ugly appearance, constantly being bullied with nicknames like "Vampire" and "Rihoko" (short for "Real Horror Girl"). Now, Sophia is actually a vampire who holds immense and versatile power. While she works with the demon army, she does not hold an official command position, instead working as Shiraori's aid.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: The light novel cuts down a lot on her murder happy side and cruelty. For example, in the web novel she attempted to murder Anna because she wasn't specifically told not to touch her while in the light novel the entire scene goes by with her basically just teasing Shun's party while they ineffectually try to attack her. Her relationships with her group are also more developed and complicated, but overall showing that she cares deeply about them and they care about her in turn.
  • Always Someone Better: A sore sticking point for her is that for all her love of battle, her travelling companions are just too strong for her to ever hope to win. She feels especially inferior to White due to carrying baggage from their previous life in Japan as well as White going out of her way to save or help Sophia when she's in trouble. It reaches the point Sophia is actually happy when White loses her powers since it means Sophia can feel superior for once and "settle her debts" by protecting White. This comes back to bite her harder than ever when White regains her powers, driving Sophia to level up Jealousy into Envy.
  • Amusing Injuries: In the Web Novel, Wrath once witnessed Shiraori punishing Sophia by kicking her so hard, her body bent into < shape. And also witnessed Sophia's ear piercing screams of pain when she drags and heals Sophia back to her normal body shape, earning his fear towards Shiraori.
  • Badass Cape: She wears a purple cape with a high collar, which gives her a look similar to a classic vampire.
  • Berserk Button: Sophia really doesn't like being called "Rihoko" when Hugo made that mistake in which everyone apart from Shiraori and Wrath is terrified of her overwhelming Killing Intent in the Battle of the Elf Village.
  • BFS: As Shun describes, during their combat encounters with Sophia, is that the latter would sometimes wield a broadsword bigger than her frame.
  • Big Eater: Shiraori drags her along on so many restaurant visits that she eventually gains the Overeating skill.
  • Blood Countess: Sophia is a vampire noblewoman, is a major antagonist in Shun's side of the story and has no qualms with brutally killing people.
  • Blood Knight: Vampires crave combat, which causes increasing stress for her at the academy because there's no one at her level to let her blow off steam. Her classmates and teachers are pathetically weak compared to her while Shiraori and Ariel are so much stronger that she can't have an exciting fight, only one sided stomps in one direction or the other. She gets pissed when an equal opponent shows up in the form of Wrath, only for Gülie to interrupt just as it was getting good.
    • This is also the reason for Sophia getting the Ruler of Envy title in Volume 9 of the light novel. Since Shiraori's powers are back after a drunken rampage, Sophia is now at the bottom of the power hierarchy of the Demon Lord's party. Combined with her frustration of being powerless against Wrath & Ael, she levels up Jealousy into Envy.
  • Bloody Murder: She can manipulate her own blood and throw it at her opponents.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Sophia develops into viewing humans as a good source of food thanks to becoming a vampire and being forced to drink blood to survive once. Even though she and others acknowledge this shift is entirely natural for a vampire it's still something they want to curtail.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Shiraori makes the mistake of asking Sophia to explain something to the reincarnators, the latter agrees and seemingly goes out of her way to be as dickish (but honest) about it as she possibly can, including referring to the former captives as prisoners of war, that they're useless and telling them the demons and their allies owe them nothing and are doing them a huge favor just explaining as much as they are. This is entirely true, but way more aggressive in tone than what Shiraori wanted to get across, which was more along the lines of 'we saved you, we don't need you so you can stay with us or leave as you please and here's the basic situation and why we saved you to begin with.'
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a very busty figure, much to D's chagrin who sabotaged the Reincarnators so they couldn't be bigger than her. It's implied this is due to her reincarnating into a vampire, who are known to be inherently attractive.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: She has an extremely low tolerance for alcohol, getting drunk with the slightest sip or even just the smell.
  • The Chew Toy: Sophia has to deal with a lot of pain, trauma, and humiliation whenever Shiraori or the Puppet Taratects sans Ael are around. Because of Sophia's Jerkass attitude, Shiraori constantly treating her like crap rolls back around to make her oddly endearing.
  • Classy Cravat: She was reborn as the daughter of nobles and wears a red cravat.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • Though is not clear if it is because of her Envy skill or if she wants Shiraori to acknowledge her as a companion like she does (in her eyes) for everyone else. In the Light Novel the Ruler skills explicitly affect the minds and personalities of their bearers without Heresy Resistance or Nullification to hinder or stop it, and while Jealousy made Sophia into something of a low-key Yandere, Envy straight-up turns her into one, becoming so clingy to White that she acts like a Woman Scorned simply by White choosing to go somewhere without telling her first.
    • Merazophis is her servant, and hers only. Because he didn't want to leave when she offered to release him from his promise, she will not let him go ever. Nor will she share him with anyone, not even the memory of her parents.
  • Creepy Loner Girl: Sophia, during her previous life as Shouko Negishi, is described as bony, thin and having a dark expression on her face similar to a ghost. It's also the reason why she was nicknamed "Rihoko" or "Real Horror Girl" in high school. Coincidentally enough, she was called a vampire in middle school.
  • Dark Action Girl: Sophia grows up into an absolutely brutal, ruthless and near unbeatable vampire swordswoman.
  • Daywalking Vampire: Since she's a Progenitor Vampire, she is immune to their weakness towards the sun.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: There's some comedy when she arrives at the demon territory and is enrolled in the academy because she still considers herself an untalented, worthless loser who is terrified of not measuring up to the people around her, but is completely oblivious to the fact that even as a five-year-old she's already probably stronger than the teachers.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Sophia chooses to be known as Sophia Keren because, as Wrath realizes, she hated herself in Japan and wants to act like that person never existed.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She appears much earlier in the light novel as a co-conspirator with Hugo taking down the king and driving out Shun. It's clear that she doesn't answer to him, that she's a jerk and she answers to someone she calls Master, but not much else.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Her classmates called her Rihoko ("Real Horror Girl") because she was so ugly and creepy that she frightened them. Even though she has strict orders to not kill her fellow Reincarnators, Sophia looks like she really wants to kill Hugo for calling her by her old nickname.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite using her vampirism as an excuse to view people as food, tools and toys, she is noted to be repulsed at the idea of making more kin to serve as a weapon despite this being a vampire's natural instincts, as seen during their outbreak. She doesn't want to make any more kin apart from Merazophis, genuinely having forgotten that Wald exists.
  • Femme Fatalons: She has long, sharp nails to complement her cruel vampire lady image.
  • Freudian Excuse: She's an unpleasant person, but deep down she's mostly just insecure and has had only well meaning but incompetent caretakers. She compensates for her low self esteem by being unpleasant while Merazophis and especially Shiraori aren't capable of supporting her and guiding her in a better direction: Merazophis is too blinded by loyalty while Shiraori is a laundry list of personality problems and mental illnesses.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: There are a lot of reasons for her bad behavior, but the narrative and Sophia herself understand that they don't excuse anything. However, this only fuels her self loathing.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Sophia in her previous life was envious of other girls for their good looks and popularity, especially Wakaba Hiiro. In her new life she becomes envious of anyone stronger than her, Shiraori especially, resulting in her gaining the Jealousy skill which eventually levels into the Envy Ruler skill.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Sophia's childhood was a long and tortuous extended period of Training from Hell, courtesy of Shiraori. Said training began before she even learned to walk.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Sophia thinks of Ariel as a kind and nurturing person who can be depended on for support. Wrath, Dustin and Shiraori take one good look at her and see that she's a festering pile of hatred and grudges beneath the surface, even if her motives are arguably benign.
  • Hypocrite: She refers to Wrath as Kyouya even as she refuses to use the name Shouko herself, just to annoy him.
  • Ice Magic Is Water: Her strongest attributes are ice and water, which she considers weird because she's a terrible swimmer.
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: She is very curvaceous: with a slim curved waist tempered with wide hips and shapely legs, topped-off with a incredible breast size that makes her considered by D to be the most well-endowed of all the Reincarnators (in spite of D's own efforts to make sure that she didn't become bigger than her). It's even more apparent in the anime, where her appearance in episode 14 has several shots that make her breasts seem as large as or even larger than her own head, which makes her small waist look even more svelte by comparison and really gives her body the definiton of "Hourglass".
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She acts like she's above mankind and revels in her new identity as the beautiful vampire girl Sophia Keren, but at her core she's still deeply insecure and hates herself.
  • Ironic Name: Sophia means Wisdom, but she's rather dim and has bad judgment and emotional control. Her emotions swing her every which way while she ignores her actual brain 90% of the time.
  • Jerkass: Sophia is rather thoroughly unpleasant to almost everybody. She calls Wrath "Kyouya" to harass him, competes with Phelmina when she even remembers she exists, views most people as food and gets intensely jealous of anyone that Shiro seemingly favors. About the only one she consistently treats well is Merazophis. She has a particular dislike for the other reincarnators.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: Despite being one of the most powerful characters in the story, Sophia gets abused and harassed constantly for laughs. Not that we're supposed to feel bad for her, since she's dim, rude, selfish, aggressive, envious and all-around unpleasant.
  • Lady and Knight: She is Merazophis's lady, the subject of his devotion. She expresses a desire to be a Bright Lady when she is still a toddler by becoming kind like Ariel and generous like White. That doesn't happen. She is a Dark Lady because of how selfish and cruel she becomes.
  • Lascivious Beauty Mark: She has a beauty mark under her left eye, is a renowned Proud Beauty, and Really Gets Around, creating a harem of human boys to feed from and (as it is heavily implied) sleep with.
  • Last Chance Hit Point: Sophia has a skill that allows her to survive in 1 HP should anyone actually manage to threaten her life, like Demon Lord Ariel and Shiraori.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: When she had first reincarnated, Sophia was a basically normal girl, though she had some major self-loathing issues. After awakening as a vampire she grows increasingly callous and self-centered with only fragments of the girl she once was remaining. How much of this is strictly due to vampirism rather than it just being the trigger is vague.
  • Monster Progenitor: Having been reborn as a vampire, Sophia has the Progenitor title, which cancels out the negatives effects of being a vampire.
  • Morphic Resonance: In the anime, Shouko has Cute Little Fangs in Japan to make it visually clearer she's the one who became the vampire Sophia after being reincarnated.
  • Never My Fault: While her transformation into a vampire does have clear effects on her personality, it's also clear that she's running away from taking responsibility for her actions by blaming her poor behavior on her new state of being.
  • No-Sell: She's essentially immune to magic thanks to her Divine Dragon Scales skill.
  • No Social Skills: She's more functional than Shiraori, but it's still very clear that she has no idea how to interact with anyone on an equal basis and tends to constantly make a fool of herself as a result.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Sophia is implied to not be on Shiraori's side because she thinks it's best for the planet, but because she can't stand anyone else being close to Shiraori in a way she isn't.
  • Ojou Ringlets: She has thin curls in front of her shoulders to show she was reborn as the daughter of a wealthy noble family.
  • One-Handed Zweihänder: Shun notes that Sophia casually wields a two-handed broadsword larger than her body frame single-handedly during their encounter at the Elf Village.
  • Only Sane Woman: Briefly, during her earliest POV segments detailing parts of the journey from the Kelen estate to the Demon territory. During this time she serves as the viewpoint of a relatively normal person looking at Shiraori from the outside and hasn't the faintest idea what she's thinking because she neither emotes nor speaks. She also finds both her and Ariel's values strange, though she latches onto the latter because she (incorrectly) assumes her to be the kinder and more reasonable person.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Sophia is a Progenitor Vampire, which leaves her immune to a vampire's normal weaknesses and gives other special bonuses. Normal vampires are mindlessly violent, but neither she nor her spawn share this weakness. While she hasn't done so yet, she also has the skill Kin Domination, meaning she could order them like slaves if she chose.
  • Pointy Ears: Her ears are slightly pointy due to being a vampire.
  • Power Nullifier: The effects of Envy allow her to temporarily seal off other people's skills.
  • Proper Lady: When she was a toddler, she aspired to invoke this trope by becoming "the perfect young lady", someone who was kind, considerate, and generous. Together with her beauty, she believed this would make her worthy of being Merazophis's master. To him only, she reaches this goal, but she's nasty to others. Merazophis, however, doesn't care if she is a perfect proper lady, so long as she allows him to continue serving her.
  • Proud Beauty: She's very happy with her good looks and Impossible Hourglass Figure, especially since she used to be considered to be bony and unattractive in her previous life and actively dislikes when people bring up how she looked like as Negishi Shouko.
  • Really Gets Around: Implicitly. She seems to be having sex with the boys she feeds off of but has no real emotional attachment to them. After being called out on using charm magic and letting her humanity slip, she eventually stops this behavior. She keeps Wald as a 'pet' because he doesn't want her to leave him and propositions Wrath once, but the latter case amusingly reveals how inexperienced she is when interacting with non-thralls.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Pretty standard for a vampire. She's probably the evilest of the reincarnators as well after having lived as a vampire for awhile, though passive enough to not cause much damage.
  • Showgirl Skirt: She wears a dress with a short skirt and two long pieces of cloth coming out of the sides of her waist, revealing her legs.
  • Super-Toughness: Thanks to Envy, Sophia can harden any part of her body with Divine Scales. Taking a direct hit from a sword can't leave even scratch in her skin.
  • Technically-Living Vampire: Sophia was reborn as a Progenitor Vampire because of her New Life in Another World Bonus. She has none of the weaknesses of being a vampire, being able to go out into the sun and not needing to regularly drink blood.
  • That Man Is Dead: Shouko was an unattractive, ill-tempered child with no friends who hated her life in Japan. After being reborn as the beautiful vampire Sophia, she refuses to use her old name when talking with other reincarnated people.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Sophia must call Shiraori her Master or she'll be punished by either sitting or kneeling before her. Shiraori actually cursed Sophia using her god powers due to an incident in the demon academy, where Phelmina gets outcasted due to Wald.
  • Training from Hell: She was subjected to this by Shiraori when she was just a toddler. Thanks to this she was already more powerful as a little girl than most adventurers become in their lifetime, and by the time she meets the main reincarnator group they can't even touch her.
  • Transhuman Treachery: Sophia advocates that claiming that clinging to human morality would be unnatural. She's not entirely wrong, but it's also clearly an excuse to avoid taking responsibility for her actions. And she knows it too.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Sophia often doesn't understand her own feelings and frequently lies about them when she does. She also doesn't bother to mention things that aren't important to her. However, it's much easier to figure out what she's really thinking than with Kumoko.
  • Vampires Are Sex Gods: Played with. Sophia is indicated to be one of the most attractive of the reincarnators and builds herself a harem using her vampire charm abilities. She feeds off her harem and then the two of them have sex, or it least the story strongly implies as much. However, she's terrible at interacting with non-thralls and her propositioning of Kyouya is incredibly awkward because she has no control over him and he's one of the people she views as being relatively equal to herself.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Downplayed example compared to Shiro, but "D" muses that she has hopes for Sophia to "keep things interesting" in the new world after the System's collapse, now that Shiraori is no longer there.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She actually seems to get along with Phelmina despite wanting to kill her as both can actually relate to each other quite well. She even surprises herself at one point by asking Phelmina if she's okay after the other girl has had to put up with Shiro for too long.
  • Weight Woe: Much to her distress, unlike everyone else with the Overeating skill, it does make her look fat. She apparently goes on a diet afterward until she returns to normal.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: A substantial part of Sophia's dissatisfaction and unhappiness with her current life stems from Shiraori not seeming to care very much about her in any way she can appreciate. An also not unsubstantial part of the problem is that both Sophia and Shiraori completely suck at properly conveying their feelings to other people, so Shiraori simply doesn't get that Sophia just wants her approval and is jealous of other people seemingly getting it with no effort, while Sophia is unaware of how often she's in Shiraori's thoughts or that Shiraori's borderline abusive treatment is not out of malice or disappointment but because she's even worse at expressing herself than Sophia is. Or that Shiraori more or less does think of her as her daughter.
  • Willfully Weak: During her fight with Shun's party, the only reason why they think they can stand a chance against Sophia is because she's been holding back the entire time, since Shiraori gave her orders to not kill her fellow Reincarnators. Only Fei recognized Sophia was just playing with them and they would be instantly killed if she ever got serious during their fight.

    Wrath

Wrath (Formerly: Sasajima Kyouya)

Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka (Japanese), Casey Mongillo (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wrath_kumo_anime.png

Wrath is an Oni and the notoriously brutal commander of the Eighth Demon Army. He's noted to have a problematic personality and morale among his army is particularly low, but because of his great power none dare to question him. Before reincarnating, he was one of Shun's closest friends.

  • Atrocious Alias: Sophia lights into Wrath on his name choice, saying it's the sort of name a chuunibyou would choose and then apologizing if he is one. Wrath admits to himself it was a pretty juvenile choice, but in his defense he was mentally exhausted and didn't know he'd run into another student.
  • The Berserker
    • He's the Ruler of Wrath and capable of completely losing it at any time. Even without the Wrath skill active he seems to have lost his self awareness until Gülie beats him unconscious. Shiraori orders him to acquire Heresy Nullity to help counter this issue. As shown by her own use of the weaker Anger skill, however, it's only a partial countermeasure, and it is later confirmed that even with Heresy Nullity he still can't use Wrath for more than very brief periods or he risks losing himself again.
    • For his final fight, he immediately activates Wrath and loses himself again in order to hopefully defeat Shun and his party. He's relying on Sophia to kill him since even with Wrath she still has an affinity advantage against him. Unfortunately, while Wrath doesn't prevent him from using his skills properly, it does cause him to misprioritize and leads to his defeat when he fails to target Shun.
  • Berserk Button: Contrary to his name, he's usually the calm voice of reason on the demon side; however, anything to do with abusing mind-control can make him lose his cool on account of the horrible things it was used to do with him. He becomes utterly furious with Sophia when he learns she's been abusing it, and kills Hugo in defiance of Shiro's orders to prevent her from continuing to use him as a puppet.
  • Born in the Wrong Century: He never fit in when he was a Japanese citizen. He would do what people say is "good, just, and noble" and then get yelled at for it, leaving him confused and angry. Being reincarnated as a goblin was the first time he found genuine happiness in his life, as he equates his life to the time humans used to run in safaris hunting saber-toothed tigers. Life was hard, and the rules strict, but life was also simple, and the rules fair. Nobody ever yelled at him for offering a helping hand, or doing what was asked of him. Then Buirimus came along...
  • The Brute: Wrath commands the eight army of the demon nation and is notoriously brutal to both enemy and ally alike. He has his reasons for things like threatening to murder all his soldiers if they get in the way or deliberately causing the highest amount of casualties possible, but good luck explaining to someone why they're better off dead.
  • Bully Hunter: He was this in his previous life, prior to entering high school. He was so quick to resort to violence against bullies that this, combined with his short stature as Sasajima Kyouya, earned him the nickname "Little Ogre".
  • Death Seeker: When Wrath developed Parallel Will his conscious mind had no control over his body's rampage and he began thinking death would be preferable to watching his body slaughter innocents. However, he's ashamed to realize that he still didn't want to actually die. It's implied that he intends to die after Shiraori's plan is completed.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Wrath does not wish to be called Kyouya or Razraz because he feels he's lost the right to use either name because of his heinous actions. Sophia does so anyway specifically to annoy him.
  • Doomed Home Town: His entire village was wiped out by Buirimus and the human subjugation unit: Goblins may have a simple, noble lifestyle, but they're aggressive towards human and therefore considered monsters to be exterminated without a second thought.
  • Evil Former Friend: Wrath is one of the Demon Generals and also one of Shun's friends before they reincarnated. After a horrific backstory he jumps on board with Shiraori's plan in an attempt to justify his actions when he was out of control due to the Wrath skill. Having chosen to side with her, he seems to be sticking with her plan even though it's very destructive out of a Sunk Cost Fallacy.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Kyouya started as a goblin, one of the weakest monsters in the world, before evolving into an oni everyone fears and one of the strongest beings within the System. In the Web Novel, Sophia was even surprised & respects Wrath and compared him to Shiraori, who has a similar upbringing starting as a weak monster.
  • General Ripper: Wrath behaves like this while leading his army due to a mixture of factors. He lacks the ability to command effectively so he forces the armies into close combat so orders don't matter; he can't allow either army to retreat so he planted mines behind the demons and destroyed the human fort; and he can't simply wipe out the humans so he limits his attacks.
  • Glass Cannon: While his stats seem fairly evenly distributed at a glance, all of his actual skills are weighted towards offense with the only notable resistances being physical, lightning and fire and no particular defense boosting skills to accompany them. As a result, he considers himself quite fragile. In contrast, Sophia has offenses that are also highly developed, but is much more well balanced with her skills or even defense focused.
  • Horned Humanoid: As an oni, he has a humanoid appearance as well as a notable pair of horns.
  • Master Swordsman: On top of his sheer brute abilities he also has the apparently highest ranking sword skill there is after imitating Reigar's movements in the depths of his madness.
  • Meaningful Rename: After succumbing to his rage and slaughtering an entire village, Kyouya feels his anger has destroyed his connection to the proud and spiritual goblins. He evolves into an Ogre and renames himself "Wrath".
  • No-Sell: Averted. He gained Heresy Nullity in part to allow free usage of Wrath, but it's noted that the skill was most likely designed to override said nullification. As such it has simply gone from too dangerous to use at all to a very dangerous double edged sword.
  • Oni: He evolves into an oni, a monster species that looks mostly human-like plus horns on the head.
  • Our Goblins Are Different: He was reincarnated as a goblin. After that, during his rampage in the mountains, he progressively evolved into a goblin shaman, an ogre, an ogre shaman, a high ogre, an ogre general, an ogre king, and finally, an oni.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He looks like a normal human apart from his horns and red eyes. However, as an oni with the Wrath skill, he's incredibly dangerous.
  • Spanner in the Works: Wrath, unknowingly, threw a wrench on one of Shiraori's objectives in the Human Demon War in volume 12 of the light novel. Aside from mass casualties from both sides, Shiraori wanted Julius to be forced to use D's one time use Hero Sword on the fake Queen Taratect that she summons in the battlefield since it's a very dangerous weapon that can even kill gods. Julius manages to defeat it by targeting the eyes via Wrath's exploding sword, which was gifted to him by Ronandt when the latter tried to subjugate Wrath years ago.
  • Stand Your Ground: During the Human Demon War, Wrath basically mined their retreat path with his exploding swords, lest someone from the Demons tries to retreat at the heat of the battle.
  • Storm of Blades: One of his abilities allows him to summon hundreds of swords and rain them down on his enemies.
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: Wrath is another one who was basically forced into his current situation by forces outside his control. While his relaxed view of killing is understandable, probably unavoidable and possibly even right, it doesn't change the fact that he's willing subordinated himself to Shiraori's plan because of a Sunk Cost Fallacy despite the high potential body count. However, since his backstory is so terrible and his motives so genuinely well meaning it keeps him from being a cliche Evil Former Friend.
  • That Man Is Dead: Kyouya was relatively normal and only notable for being hotblooded with a strong sense of justice. He reincarnated as a goblin and took easily and happily to the life, now named Razraz. However, he cast aside both identities and changed his name at a fundamental level to Wrath. While a bit chuuni-ish and embarrassing, he still does not want to be called Kyouya anymore.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: One of Wrath's main methods of attack involves creating and throwing countless exploding swords at his enemies.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Wrath is immensely powerful in terms of raw abilities, but he has relatively few skills. As a result, during his fight with Sophia he was almost entirely on the defensive because she had very high stats as well as the skills to match them.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Wrath was so angry after finally gaining his freedom that he kept killing anything he found, innocent or not. Deep down he knew this was wrong and was disgusted, the resulting anger just feeding the rage that sent him rampaging. Activating the Wrath skill makes this trope near-literal as it puts every one of his stats at the cap, a normally impossible number, and his mind into a berserk rage.
  • Villain's Dying Grace: In the Web Novel, he voluntarily throws his soul into the System to help charge up the depleted energy, apparently destroying it in atonement for his previous crimes.

Tagawa Kunihiko (left) and Kushitani Asaka (right)

A pair of reincarnated students turned adventurers, who got to the Elf Village shortly before Shun. As A-Ranked adventurers, they are among the strongest reincarnations, with Shiraori considering them the strongest human reincarnations.

  • Battle Couple: They're a romantic couple and both are A-Ranked adventurers.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Asaka's personal skill "Lazy Efficiency" works like this, giving her a minor increase to skill proficencies and success rates.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Both in their past and current lives, they're Childhood Friends who promised to get married when they grow up.
  • Doomed Hometown: They were reincarnated into the same mercenary-village until Merazophis destroyed their village in retaliation against raids against the Demon Army, sparing only them as reincarnations, as per Shiraori's orders. They became adventurers, and eventually fought against Merazophis in the Great Human-Demon War, who defeated them. They met Filimøs on the same battlefield, who took them to the Elf-village shortly before the arrival of Shun's group.
  • The Drag-Along: Asaka is personally uninvested in Kunihiko's desire for revenge against Merazofis, likely because A. their family and hometown were a bunch of cruel thugs anyway and B. she's not blinded by her emotions and can tell they will never be able to beat him. She goes along with his whims anyway until it comes times to actually fight him, at which point she knocks Kunihiko unconscious and surrenders before he gets them both killed.
  • Elemental Weapon: Kunihiko wields a lightning imbued Katana fashioned from the remains of a dragon they defeated.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Kunihiko wields a katana in close-range combat, whereas Asaka prefers spellslinging.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: In the Final Battle, Asaka knocks out Kunihiko and forfeits their fight with Merazophis as the former knew just how outclassed they were against Shiraori's group.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Kunihiko is rather rash and direct, whereas Asaka is more The Reliable One. They both are seasoned adventurers, however, and thus have a more mature viewpoint than other reincarnations like Shun.
  • Reincarnation Romance: Before reincarnating, Kunihiko and Asaka had feelings for each other and mentioned that they wanted to get married in the future. After reincarnating, Kunihiko wastes no time proposing to Asaka, to which she accepts.
  • Revenge: Kunihiko wants revenge against Merazophis for destroying their village, whereas Asaka is more of The Drag-Along quietly wishing for a peaceful life.
  • Utility Magic: Kunihiko's personal skill "adventurer" is a combination of various support-skills, such as a Bag of Holding and a Status menu. Collectively the effects approximate being the player character in a computer RPG.
  • The Worf Effect: Shortly after their introduction, the narration talks up the succcess they had as adventurers, and shows off the magic weapons they acquired in the process. Then, during the battle of Elf-Village they briefly go toe-to-toe with Sophia before being utterly curb-stomped by Wrath. This shows out outclassed they are, and thus how powerful their opponents are, to defeat them so easily.

In her previous life, Sachi was the class representative. She stood out in class due to her blunt nature, and was a closet fujoshi. After reincarnating, she was sold to elves by her impoverished parents. She doesn't like Oka, and considers the reincarnations protected in the Elf Village to be victims of kidnapping.

  • The Charmer: Her cheat skill increases her charisma and persuasion skills.
  • Class Representative: Before reincarnating, she was the class rep.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Because the Elf Village was lacking in entertainment, she came out as a fujoshi to the other girls. Due to her activities to preach the rotten faith, all the girls in the Elf Village became fujoshis.

Demon side

    Ariel

Demon Lord Ariel

Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka (Japanese), Veronica Taylor (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ariel_anime.png

The current demon lord, Ariel is the strongest being on the planet apart from the gods and has a connection to spiders, a master of thread and controls an army of puppet minions. She's laid back and rather silly, but also extremely dangerous.

  • A-Cup Angst: The flat-chested Ariel gets annoyed when the well-endowed Shiraori complains about another general's even larger bust. She expresses this by tearing off Shiraori's breasts.
  • Adaptational Modesty: Zigzagged in the manga. During the demon army assembly Ariel is depicted in her stripperific bikini outfit, but while chasing Kumoko she wears tights and a corset that covers her entire torso.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: In the web novel, Shiraori at one point considers and rejects consulting her on parenting because her Ariel's horrific treatment of her children, the Taratects. In the light novel, she's pissed at Kumoko wiping some of them out, especially a Queen.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the anime, contrary to the light novel, Ariel never tries to reason with Kumoko. The moment she saw the spider, she went straight for the kill. However, in the web novel, she also pretty much decided to kill Kumoko on sight after realizing the spider before her didn't understand what she just said.
  • The Ageless: Ariel turns out to have had an immortal body from the start, being the one actual success in Potimas' insane immortality experiments. Once the System negated the dangers of the poison her body naturally produces and leaks into her bloodstream, she's been able to go on living with the body of a young teenager for centuries. It's to the point she's going to die from her soul collapsing due to all the modifications the System has made to it in her centuries long quest to become powerful enough to finally kill Potimas, long before her physical body is anywhere close to failing her.
  • Artificial Human: Ariel was created when Potimas performed an experiment by mixing his genes with a spider.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: As noted by Balto, Ariel inherited the Demon King title specifically because of her monstrous strength. She apparently lacks any skills, or interest for that matter, in ruling, and Balto is the one that has to oversee important matters.
  • Badass Cape: She wears an awesome-looking stripped cape with a high-fur collar, giving her a look befitting of a Demon Lord.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Thanks to Kumoko's soul fragment altering her personality, Ariel is very goofy and undignified, but this is mostly superficial: Beneath the surface is a vast ocean of hatred and anger. Given how stupidly powerful she is, this makes her possibly the most dangerous person on the planet, though not the strongest.
  • Big Eater: She possesses the Gluttony Ruler Skill, which allows her to devour anything, even energy or barriers and things that can't technically fit in her mouth. They get converted into a massive stockpile as large as the stat cap. This is a carry-over from her youth when she had massive calorie requirements due to her flawed body.
  • Chainmail Bikini: Ariel is depicted wearing a leather version of this outfit in the light novel and manga, along with a cape, gloves, and leggings.
  • Cooperation Gambit: After realizing that killing Kumoko was practically impossible, Ariel offered a ceasefire, with the intent of either taking control of her or killing her for good. While trying to accomplish this, they slowly let go of their grudge. Nowadays Kumoko, or as she is nowadays called, Shiraori is Ariel's most trusted and powerful ally, so her decision proved better than she could have anticipated.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Her anime design plays up her canines, with one of them sometimes sticking out of her mouth when she smiles.
  • Dark Action Girl: She's the Demon Lord, making her the most powerful and deadliest of the demon race.
  • De-power: After nearly exhausting her soul by the use of Humility in order to defeat Potimas, she becomes so weakened that she has only one year left to live and has lost most of her power, to the point that she needs to have actual bodyguards for her own safety.
  • The Dreaded: Ariel, as the strongest being in the System, is rightfully feared by those who are even aware of her. The Demons are downright terrified of her and will try to do their best to not anger her in the slightest. Dustin calls her canonization as a Demon Lord a crisis that threatens all humanity & Potimas is even wary of Ariel and creates weapons that specifically counters her.
  • Evil Wears Black: Except for her cape, her clothes are primarily black as it's fitting for a Demon Lord.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Gluttony allows the skill user to eat things that aren't even physical, like magic barriers. It's a relic of the days from the early history of the System where to get enough calories to sustain her poorly designed body she would have to eat much more than a normal person and even had to eat dirt just so she could feel full.
  • Failure Knight: Ariel views herself as the least worthy of the children collected by Sariel and regrets that she alone survived while the others inevitable sacrificed themselves for their patron. Her decision to act at the end of her life is an attempt to make her survival mean something.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Ariel's outfit has two leggings of different lengths, with a red bow on the hip above the shorter legging.
  • Fur and Loathing: Her cape has a high-fur collar that adds to her villainous image.
  • Game Face: In the manga, when Guile asks her if she hates humans so much she wants to kill them all, Ariel flies into a rage with her teeth turning into fangs and her sclerae turning black as she rants that humanity deserves to be annihilated for betraying Sariel.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: In the manga, when Ariel tracks down Kumoko during the War in Sariella she sends her crashing down into the battlefield with enough force to carve a furrow into the ground, spattering every soldier in her way in the process. This results in Kumoko gaining a bunch of levels due to the EXP from the dead soldiers going to her.
  • Gruesome Grandparent: As the creator of the Taratect spider race, Ariel is Kumoko's grandmother and when they first meet, Ariel tries to kill Kumoko. Ariel technically succeeds by disintegrating Kumoko with Abyss magic, but Kumoko transfers her soul to one of her eggs and revives. Afterwards, due to part of Kumoko's soul fusing with her, Ariel loses any intention of killing Kumoko and they form a good relationship from then on.
  • Had to Be Sharp: She became so strong because she was around during the early days of the System. Back in those days, she had to get tough to survive, though it took her a long time thanks to being so frail in her youth.
  • Half-Breed Angst: She is essentially the outcome of a genetic experiment blending elf and spider DNA. The complications nearly killed her because her body produces toxins that a roughly human body isn't equipped to deal with, meaning she spent a ton of energy producing something that just made her sick.
  • High Collar of Doom: She's the Demon Lord and wears a cool-looking cape with a fluffy high collar around her neck.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: She considers all of humanity a bunch of ungrateful bastards who ruined their own planet through their greed, sacrificed the selfless goddess Sariel to save themselves, and then within a few generations completely forgot their debt and have done nothing as the world moved closer and closer to destruction once more. She makes it clear in the Final Battle that she expects nothing from them, and that she's perfectly willing to kill all of them for Sariel's sake if they want to try killing Sariel for their own sakes.
  • Kick Chick: The second anime opening has most of her attacks being kicks. However, in the actual fight, she instead resorts mostly to a flurry of punches.
  • Last of Her Kind: Ariel is the last of Potimas' experimental children, as she was the only one with a truly immortal body and thus the only one to survive the centuries since the System was established. The others also sacrificed their souls so that Sariel could be freed more quickly, so they'll never come back. Within the System they're known as Divine Beasts, though it's not clear what benefits this title carries.
  • Loss of Identity: Ariel could tell that she was slowly merging with the former Body-In-Charge, altering her personality. Thanks to Kumoko's natural personality, she couldn't even get that worked up about it. The net effect is a loss in her outward dignity, a ditzier personality and a thin veneer over her various personality problems.
  • The Maker: She's known as the Origin Taratect, though how she created them is unclear.
  • Maou the Demon King: She's the current Demon Lord, with the title making her the ruler of the demon race and leader of its armies.
  • Master of Threads: She combines multiple high-level thread Skills, such as Divine Thread Weaving, Thread Genius, and Thread Control, to produce threads from her fingertips and control them. She mostly uses it to restrain her opponents and control others' movements as if they were puppets.
  • Monster Progenitor: Ariel created the Taratects to serve as her own personal army. There's a soul linked hierarchy between them with the Kin Domination skill. She no longer seems to create them herself, however, instead having the Queens lay eggs with the survivors serving as her pawns.
  • Morality Pet: Played with. Shiraori is super loyal to her and is motivated in large part by trying to grant her dying wish, but this actually cause her to behave less morally: If Ariel wasn't in the picture, Shiraori would likely have no particular preference for which plan she uses to save the planet.
  • Ms. Fanservice: While not as voluptuous as Shiraori or Sophia, Ariel can still be considered quite attractive. Her outfit helps in this, as it merely consists of a tube-top and hot-pants.
  • Nightmare Face: In the manga, her face can become virtually inhuman when she lets some of her suppressed anger show. Her eyes become solid, reflective orbs, the skin around them draws unnaturally tight, and her lips stretch to show teeth that seem too large for her face.
  • Non-Human Humanoid Hybrid: She's a unique elf-spider monster hybrid.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Ariel and Shiraori both choose to not actively participate in the war, only intervening when necessary. Many of the Demon generals are unhappy with both of them, Ariel for her apparent disinterest and Shiraori for not using her overwhelming power early on.
  • Pimped-Out Cape: She has a unique cape consisting of a band of cloth at chest level from which hang eight bands of fabric ending in large gems.
  • Pointy Ears: She has pointy elf-like ears due to being partly made of Potimas' elf genes.
  • The Power of Hate: The real reason Kumoko went berserk at rank 10 Taboo is because the Kin Domination link between her and Ariel flooded Kumoko so badly it warped her personality and caused temporary insanity. Normally she wouldn't have been any more affected by the revelation than thinking 'Oh, the humans here sure screwed up huh?' Her anger also reached a point where she's only a hair's breadth from getting the Wrath skill, which would actually be pretty much worthless for her.
  • Pretender Diss: She eventually makes it clear when she says she's the next Demon Lord, she's not talking about being the successor to all those fakes that came from the rulers of the demons and called themselves the Demon Lord because they got a title from the System. No, she means she's the second coming of the very first Demon Lord Foddway, who tried to wipe out every sentient being on the planet in order to save Sariel. And unlike all the imitators, she's perfectly willing to do the same if push comes to shove.
  • Pretty Freeloaders: Shiraori refers to Ariel as a NEET because unlike her, Ariel really doesn't do anything. Ariel thinks it's a joke at first, only to find that Shiraori considers her genuinely useless.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Ariel is one of the oldest living beings on the planet, but she looks like a girl in her early teens.
  • Red Baron: The Origin Taratect and the Oldest Divine Beast. The latter is even a genuine title, though the effects are unknown.
  • Red Herring: She looks and sounds young, has a rather flighty personality, has no respect for decorum or station, is overwhelmingly powerful, can restrain and control others with nearly invisible threads, has Abyss Magic, seemingly throws a Queen Taratect into a battlefield on a whim as well as seemingly suggests (off-screen) to Sanatoria to use the Revenge Monkeys to take over a fort with no effort; all things that Kumoko is, can do, has experienced or are related to her. At one point her narration even implies that her joking about becoming the Demon King would have a much more serious meaning later on. You would be forgiven for thinking that you're looking at Demon King Kumoko early on for the few chapters you see her from Balto's perspective, but the real Kumoko is actually Shiro, Demon King Ariel's enigmatic, all-white general of the 10th Demon Army. Also, Shiro is not only stronger than Ariel, but the one pulling the strings behind everything, so in practice the actual Demon King could be said to be Shiro/Kumoko after all.
    • The anime doubles down on this by making Ariel the character with the most focus in the intro besides Kumoko, and even having her act things the lyrics are singing about (Like having her bite down on the planet when the lyrics say "I'll hunt you down and gobble you up"), and having Ariel's eyes reflect a female form covered in webs. Furthermore the intro overlays Ariel's silhouette with webbing motifs repeatedly.
    • Then again, given that Ariel's current attitude is partially a result of one of Kumoko's Parallel Minds fusing with her soul, it's not entirely untrue that they were looking at Demon Lord Kumoko.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When Kumoko starts targeting the Queen Taratect, Ariel sends her Puppet Taratects after her and casually obliterates her when they first meet face-to-face — with Kumoko only surviving due to her Immortality and Regeneration skills and Ariel not realizing she has them (since she possesses at least one ability that can bypass both of those). When Kumoko kills Mother, Ariel is enraged and pursues her with a vengeance. When she finally catches up to Kumoko during the war between Keren County and Ohts, she blocks Kumoko's attempts to teleport away and tries to eat her — only stopping when confronted by a young Julius.
  • Self-Made Orphan: A long-time goal she finally achieved when killing Potimas, her biological father.
  • She Is the King: The "Demon Lord" is a masculine title, so it's unexpected that the one holding it is a young-looking girl.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Ariel is known as the oldest Divine Beast, but who she actually is is not common knowledge. The goddess religion worships her because they consider her a messenger of Sariel and believe her to be a spider. This is sort of close, but the truth is actually just that Sariel is her adopted mother and while she does have spider DNA in her, Ariel herself is completely humanoid and merely birthed the Taratect race somehow to serve as her pawns. Because she is not well known, Kumoko is mistaken for her because of her seeming benevolence, great power and spider form.
  • Sickly Child Grew Up Strong: As a spider-hybrid, she constantly produced poison, but wasn't immune to it and was therefore constantly sickly and weak. Now, she's the strongest demon in the planet.
  • Stripperiffic: She fights in an outfit consisting of a tube top, hot pants, long gloves, boots and a cape.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Ariel, despite her size, is the strongest being within the System. Wrath, after being subjugated by the Demon Lord's party, feels dread to only her specifically even when faced with monsters such Sophia and the puppet taratects while Ariel praises him for being able to determine her strength even without using Appraisal.
  • Stronger with Age: She's thousands of years old, so to keep surviving she's had to keep getting stronger.
  • Superpower Disability: Ariel's body was born with the ability to generate venom. However, she didn't have any poison resistance, causing her to slowly poison herself. To make matters worse, her poison generation consumed all her physical energy, leaving her in a constant state of hunger and unable to move her body. In the present, her body can't produce poison anymore thanks to the System.
  • Suppressed Rage: Ariel hates the world and everyone in it for not being worthy of the price Sariel paid to save it. While she's often smiling and cheerful in the present due to merging with Kumoko's soul fragment that hatred is definitely still there, even if dampened. Notably, she's only a hair away from having gained the Wrath skill on top of Gluttony.
  • Supreme Chef: To Shiraori's surprise, Ariel is as good as a professional chef. After Taboo is installed in all of humanity she even takes the opportunity to cook breakfast for the reincarnators. Despite being made out of military rations and whatever she could find lying around on a battlefield, it's quite delicious.
  • Too Desperate to Be Picky: In the past, due to the war of the dragons, Sariel's orphanage had too little food. Combined with her constitution, Ariel faced hunger everyday despite others giving their rations to her. It reached to a point that Ariel has to be stopped by others because of her suicidal instincts and also her eating dirt just to survive.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Thanks to Kumoko's soul fragment fusing with her, Ariel becomes more childish and easy-going. Considering that she was described as a walking mass of hatred and rage before this, this was a blessing. This is highlighted by her smashing through a roof to fight her nemesis Potimas or rather one of his remote cyborg bodies and then cheerfully introducing herself as "Maou Shoujo Ariel-chan."
  • Truly Single Parent: Implicitly. Given her title, she seems to be the creator of the Taratect species, which appear to reproduce asexually and may be an entirely female species to start with. She seems to be the direct parent of the Queens, who have taken over the role of spawning more Taratects as they are still under her control.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: With both humans and demons in bad shape after the latest wars, the leaders of both sides were more than willing to ignore each other in favor of rebuilding. Ariel taking over as Demon King scuttles these plans in favor of the most damaging war for both sides in history.
  • Worthy Opponent: Potimas offers her praise when she defeats a wave of robots and, in memory of their long history, sends his most powerful to kill her. However, it's clear that he's being incredibly condescending as he does so and he takes his defeat with, um, a notable lack of grace.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Her soul is on the brink of collapse after being overloaded with skills and staying alive for hundreds or even thousands of years. Her death is unavoidable, but not going to happen any time soon. However, she then uses Humility and ends up reducing her remaining lifespan to no more than a year. She can still function day-to-day normally, but if she performs any extraneous activities thereafter her one year will reduce even further.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: The Great Demon King skill prevents enemies from using Transfer magic within a certain distance from the user or fleeing beyond a certain distance if she doesn't want them to. This seems to be one of the few perks to the Demon King title compared to the massive advantages given to the Hero that the Demon King doesn't get to enjoy.

    Shiraori

Shiraori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiraori.png

Also known as Shiro, Shiraori is referred to by Ariel as her greatest masterpiece. Her skin, hair and clothing are all pure white and she moves around with her eyes closed at all times. Her role among the demons is rumored to involve intelligence gathering, covert ops and assassination. She turned the hero Julius to dust with a glance at the start of the war, shocking people the world over. She commands the tenth army, a mysterious group who are similarly clad in all white.

She is nearly silent among others, only speaking when absolutely necessary. People find her very difficult to understand or read. Do not give her alcohol.

Go here for more info on her, but beware spoilers.

    Merazophis

Merazophis

Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/merazophis_anime.png

Merazophis is the attendant of Sophia. His goals, motives and origins are a mystery to almost everyone. Balto in particular keeps a close eye on him, but finds him inscrutable. He has ties to the adventurer duo of reincarnators after having destroyed their village, but overlooked the two of them and let them escape. He commands the Fourth Demon Army.

  • Arch-Enemy: The adventurer duo considers him their greatest enemy after he destroyed their village. They detested their family anyway and he clearly spared them, but it was rather traumatizing.
  • Can't Catch Up: Merazophis gets hit with this, wanting to be strong enough to protect Sophia only for her to eventually become stronger than him. Despite this he continues training himself in the same insane manner learned from Shiraori, being so diligent he earns the Perseverance skill. He's okay with being weaker than her, but not with being so weak he holds her back.
  • The Champion: Since the death of Sophia's parents, he has considered protecting her to be his life purpose.
  • Crazy Sane: It's not immediately obvious, but Merazophis has thrown away every scrap of his identity that does not revolve around protecting and nurturing Sophia. He doesn't identify with humanity anymore. He doesn't care about seducing and feeding off of women. He holds no grudge against the church that destroyed his life. He raids human villages. He obsessively trains in order to be of any use to her at all. Dustin finds it both alarming and pitiful.
  • Desperately Seeking A Purpose In Life: The sacking of Keren county's capital destroyed everything in his life, and so volume 6 is about him seeking new reason to continue living. Sophia offering to release him from her service terrified him, and so he is happy indeed when she affirms that she still needs him.
  • Determinator: Merazophis is an unexceptional man in all respects except for one: His sheer bloodyminded determination to achieve the goals he sets for himself is so intense that despite being just an average person, he ends up as strong as a low to mid ranked dragon. Every single day of the last ten to fifteen years he has trained to the point of putting his life in danger, welcoming further injuries as simply another chance to train his healing magic.
  • Dope Slap: Due to an incident in the Demon Academy involving Phelmina and Wald, Merazophis, despite being weaker than Sophia, gives her a light slap to discipline her. This hurt him more than it hurt her.
  • Emergency Transformation: Sophia transformed him into a vampire to save him when he was almost killed by elves.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Played with. He trains even harder than Sophia and for longer each day, but still only has stats that are about a third of hers. However, this still puts him roughly on par with the likes of Araba, meaning the only people native to this world that could threaten him are Ariel, Ronandt and a few of the most powerful monsters.
  • Hired Help as Family: He's basically Sophia's Honorary Uncle in addition to her butler.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Merazophis knew from the start that he could never be loved in return by Sophia's mother. In the end, he never told her, seeing that she was in love and happy with her fiancee.
  • I Love You, Vampire Son: While he doesn't like the Horror Hunger at first, on the whole he is pretty happy that Sophia turned him into her vampire spawn. He already promised her parents that he would take care of her, and so vampiring made his task easier.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He loved Sophia's mother, but never told her because he saw she was happy with her eventual husband, who was also a good friend of his. While the lady Keren herself never realized, her husband did and trusted Merazophis immensely as a result.
  • Jack of All Trades: He isn't particularly suited or unsuited for anything he sets his mind to.
  • Lady and Knight: He is Sophia's White Knight because he acts as her sword, her shield and anything else she needs out of pure loyalty to her. The lengths he goes to do this such as the Horror Hunger and War On Humanity make him darker over time.
  • Morality Pet: To Sophia. Merazophis is the only person she always treats kindly and openly cares about.
  • Pointy Ears: After being transformed into a vampire, his ears become pointy.
  • Satellite Character: He lives for Sophia and has no other important relationships or goals in his life besides being Sophia's protector.
  • The Sleepless: Sleep or Abnormal Condition Nullity theoretically remove the need to ever sleep, but in practical effect everyone with it sleeps anyway. While you won't get sick or die from a lack of sleep if you have the skill, it still causes mental exhaustion to go without. Merazophis, on the other hand, is implied to never sleep anymore. Dustin takes this as evidence that the man is surely insane.
  • Undying Loyalty: Merazophis towards Sophia's mother, Seras. When she died he transferred that loyalty to Sophia.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Though Merazophis isn't really interested in women other than Sophia's mother, he's also capable of physical violence against them. He once slapped Sophia after the incident involving Wald & Phelmina in the academy, who was also punished by Shiraori with the same incident. And Merazophis wouldn't hold back even against Kushitani if not for the fact that Shiraori ordered him not to harm the reincarnations.

    Balto Phthalo

Balto Phthalo

Voiced by: Yuichiro Umehara (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/balto_phthalo.png

Balto is an archduke among the demons, meaning he holds the highest status after Ariel herself. He is clearly unhappy in her service as he is a proponent of peace for at least long enough to help the demons recover after the long war and try to increase the birth rate, but because there is no possibility of defeating or stopping her, he aids her to minimize the damage.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: He promises to Sanatoria that he won't tell the Demon Lord she's plotting a coup. Immediately after he goes to Ariel because he knows she knows anyway and begs her not to kill his friend, though he doesn't say what she's doing in order to keep his word.
  • Childhood Friends: He's known Sanatoria since they were both children.
  • Defector from Decadence: In the Final Battle, he sides with Dustin against Ariel together with Sanatoria because Ariel is now taking actions that will potentially end in the deaths of all demonkind.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: He recognizes that Shiro and Kuro are not like the other generals and suspects that they're Rulers, shadowy figures who operate behind the scenes of the world. In truth, both are Administrators AKA gods. Amusingly enough, two of his generals are Rulers: Merazophis is the Ruler of Perseverance, while Wrath is the Ruler of, well, Wrath. Neither they nor Sophia, Ruler of Envy, are anything like what Balto assumes a Ruler should be like. Instead, he thinks they're all like Potimas and Dustin.
  • Forced into Evil: He's terrified of Ariel and Shiraori, but serves as their lieutenant because if he doesn't give them the war they want they're perfectly capable of wiping out the demons all on their own. The moment working with them becomes more dangerous to his people than opposing them, he'll turn against them.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: He handles all the government and military functions personally as Ariel is incompetent when it comes to governance, leading Shiraori and Ariel to "worry" about his wellbeing.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Balto keeps trying to make his brother Bloe understand how powerful and mighty Ariel truly is and that he must never get on her bad side, but with little to no success as Bloe remains incredulous. He did give him a comparison, but it sounded so absurd he didn't buy it. It's only when a queen taratect appeared during the Great Human-Demon War in volume 12 that Balto realizes he never told Bloe about Ariel being the progenitor of the whole taratect species. By the time he shares that information with him, Bloe finally understands, but is already injured, in the middle of the battlefield, and trying to save his men from the giant spider's rampage.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: After the previous Demon King died, Balto led the demons during a period of much-needed recovery and rebuilding. He also gracefully steps aside when Ariel takes the King's mantle, as he realizes how pointless for himself and the demons in general trying resist her would be.
  • Uncertain Doom: He leads the allied army against Ariel's surface forces in the Final Battle, but his final fate is a complete mystery. The only thing known about the outcome of that battle is that the allied army routed the Taratect Army but ultimately had to retreat after taking crushing losses from a sudden ambush from the Remnants of the Nightmare.

    Bloe Phthalo

Bloe Phthalo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bloe_phthalo_anime.png

Bloe is the younger brother of Balto, but has a much more aggressive air than his older brother. He commands the seventh division after proving his competence when cutting a coup attempt off before it could even begin. He is openly hostile to Ariel for her disrespectful attitude, laziness and problem-causing behavior.

He was killed by the hero Julius at the start of the war.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To Shiraori. Despite his many attempts to woo her, she dislikes him due to him having burned her webs during their first meeting. Even Wrath scorns him for not noticing that all he does is annoy and scare her.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: He thinks Shiraori doesn't possess any fighting abilities based on his knowledge that space magic users like her dedicate all their skill points and training to space magic alone, leaving them incapable of learning any other skills. That belief is further supported by the fact that he thinks the Tenth Army's sole duty is to gather information. He couldn't be more wrong.
  • Face of a Thug: Bloe is described as this and even talks like a delinquent. When Shiraori discovers that he is really competent in his job as a commander (normally involving tons of paper work), she mentally complains that he doesn't follow the stereotype.
Shiraori: (thinking) You’re a damn hoodlum, what’re you doing desk work for!? The definition of a hoodlum collapses!
  • Hopeless Suitor: He falls in love with Shiraori, but she's terrible at dealing with him because of how impatient and aggressive he is.
  • Love at First Sight: He falls for Shiraori as soon as he sees her and regularly visits her ever since, much to her and Sophia's annoyance.
  • Posthumous Character: Almost all of his scenes are shown after we know he died in battle against Julius.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Like some of his fellow commanders and many other demons, he is convinced that Ariel is not as powerful as her Demon Lord title may imply, and doesn't hide his hostility toward her. He finally realizes Ariel's true strength during the Great Human-Demon War when Balto reveals that she is the progenitor of all the taratect monsters. He also fails to discern Shiraori's true strength and believes her to be a frail woman.
  • What Does She See in Him?: His affections for Shiraori baffles his older brother. Although the latter admits that anyone would objectively find her attractive.
  • What Is This Feeling?: In the web novel, Shiro intended to terrify him into submission by showing how easily she could kill him or anyone else at any time and did indeed frighten him. However, he misinterprets his feelings of fear in front of her as attraction and starts behaving with jealousy towards perceived rivals. While the author chalks this up to the suspension bridge effect, she's notably the last person on his mind when he dies, indicating he really did love her.

The leader of the Demon Lord's Second Demon Army.

  • Beleaguered Childhood Friend: To Balto. Upon hearing her plotting to attempt to overthrow Ariel, he begs her not to eliminate Sanatoria.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a very large bust, one that Shiraori envies.
  • Dragon Lady: She's a sexy and devious demon wearing a very revealing dress that resembles a Chinese qipao.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: Her dress has a very low neckline that exposes her shoulders and a significant amount of cleavage.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a very sexy and buxom woman wearing a revealing dress that exposes most of her large breasts.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Her dress has slits on both sides to show off her legs.
  • The Starscream: She has made a point of actively scheming to dethrone Ariel. She subtly participated and assisted several revolts against her and is actively trying to overthrow her.
  • Succubi and Incubi: She's rumored to be descended from succubi.
  • Sultry Bangs: The left side of her face is covered by her long bangs, adding to her sex appeal.
  • Vapor Wear: Her strapless dress reveals so much cleavage that there's no doubt she doesn't wear a bra.

The commander of Demon Lord Ariel's Third Demon Army.

  • Covered with Scars: He has scars all over his body.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's large and his fighting ability is high, but his intelligence is not much to speak of.
  • Trapped in Villainy: He only agrees to the Human-Demon War because Ariel threatened to sacrifice him and his army if he refused.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He wears nothing but a cape, spaulders, and pants.

    Darad

Darad

The commander of the Fifth Demon Army.

  • Barbarian Long Hair: He has long hair that gives him the look of a wild, Eastern warrior.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: Darad seems to be based on samurai; being loyal to whomever their current lord is, to the fact that he is wearing a Jinbaori and wields a Katana.
  • Undying Loyalty: Due to being born and raised in a family that swears by absolute allegiance to the generations of Demon Lords, he will abide by any plan that the Demon Lord comes up with.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: He has kinked eyebrows.

    Huey

Huey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hueyanime.png

The commander of the Sixth Demon Army.

  • Adaptational Hairstyle Change: In the manga, his hair is shorter and his bangs are pulled to the side.
  • Born Winner: Due to his family having some elf blood mixed into their genetics, Huey has high natural aptitude for magic and was stated to have already gained high level magic skills and spells despite him being one of the younger and newer members of the Demon Army Commanders.
  • Mystical High Collar: He's a powerful wizard wearing a cape with a high collar.
  • Older Than He Looks: Due to his elven bloodline, Huey's body ages and develops much slower than an average demon. Because of this, he looks like a preteen despite being an adult.
  • Uneven Hybrid: One of his ancestors was an elf. He lacks the physical traits associated with elves (i.e. no Pointy Ears and his hair is blue instead of blond), but he does have a longer lifespan than that of a demon.

    Phelmina

Phelmina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/felmina_anime.png

Phelmina is the former fiancée of Wald, one of Sophia's thralls at the academy. Seeing the mind control Sophia exerted over the school, the demon nobility and her fiancée in particular, she tried to get rid of her, but failed, causing her exile. Shiraori felt this was a waste and picked her up and trained her as a secretary and lieutenant.

  • The Chew Toy: Just about everything tends to go wrong for her, mostly thanks to Sophia's absentminded destruction of her life and Shiraori's thoughtless use of her. She's more pitiful than the similarly harassed Sophia because she hasn't really done anything to deserve it.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She appears in the light novel when driving out Shun and the others from the kingdom alongside Sophia and an unnamed mook ninja, later revealed to be Wald. Wald is nearly killed, but Phelmina is completely fine.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Although she and Wald were not in love, Phelmina was sure that they could trust each other as fiancés and long-time friends until Wald ultimately betrayed her and caused her expulsion from high society so he could chase after Sophia.
  • Hero of Another Story: She's clearly the protagonist of a villainess story, but unfortunately her opponent was way beyond her ability to deal with given that she could likely destroy the entire country single-handedly if someone like Shiraori didn't stop her. So she still hit that bad ending, but got picked up by a sympathetic Shiro afterward.
  • Ninja Maid: Shiraori trained Phelmina to be this. She is quite proud that she is stronger than Kusama.
Shiraori: Muhaha, this girl who I've tempered thoroughly is superior to their ninja-kun.
  • The Nondescript: Despite her implied good looks, she has a tendency to just fade into the background if you don't keep a close eye on her. Shiraori doesn't really get how it works beyond a vague 'well, I guess she doesn't have much presence.'
  • Ojou: She's a former high ranking noble. She's no longer part of the family but still has the upbringing and education.
  • The Reliable One: While she does feel grateful towards Shiro, she also dreads having to work for her because Phelmina is constantly overworked due to being the only responsible person among the main cast who also knows how to handle things like paperwork.
  • Rings of Death: Phelmina, as a lieutenant of Shiraori's Tenth Army, wields and is skillful of the chakrams that even Shun had a hard time dealing with them.
  • Shed the Family Name: In Phelmina's POV in volume 12, she abandons her family name and is referred only as Phelmina after her family disowns her due to Wald's scheme.
  • Troll: She deliberately taunts Sophia by acting close to Shiraori to get under her skin for having her fiance stolen. It works: Sophia literally could not remember a rival for Wald's attention, but has considered killing Phelmina on multiple occasions.
  • Undying Loyalty: Phelmina is forever grateful towards Shiraori as she's the one who helped her during her darkest times of being abandoned by everyone. In the Web Novel, this extends to leading the 10th Army, the only Demon Army to side with Ariel, into a raid against Dustin's homeguard, intending to assassinate Dustin to disrupt the enemy chain of command, even if Shiraori's victory would potentially mean the deaths of all of them. That's how loyal she is.
  • Unknown Rival: Phelmina loathes Sophia for stealing her fiancée, having her exiled and being a threat to the demon race as a whole, but Sophia didn't even notice her even though she actively tried assassinating her rival. When they meet again later Sophia has completely forgotten who she is, causing even Wrath to call her cruel. But it does make sense: Phelmina isn't important to Sophia because Wald wasn't important to Sophia. When she seems like competition for Shiro's attention instead, Sophia takes her much more seriously.
  • Unluckily Lucky: Phelmina's text description in volume 12 of the Light Novel is that after being disowned by her family, she's quite lucky and unlucky enough to be noticed and taken care of by Shiraori.
  • Willfully Weak: During her POV of the Human Demon War in volume 12, Phelmina reveals that she could actually surpass Wald in every aspect, though she chose to hold back for his happiness until Sophia came along.

    Wald Atmos

Wald Atmos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wald_atmos.png

Wald is a young high ranking demon noble that Sophia met as a child. He fell in love with her while they attended the demon academy together. He was engaged to Phelmina, but annulled the engagement after she tried and failed to get rid of Sophia.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: In the web novel he's little more than an idiot obsessed with a girl that he knows considers him nothing more than a toy and is willing to throw away everything he has for her, a gesture she barely noticed and quickly forgot. Pathetic and contemptible, but otherwise a decent person. In the light novel, Sophia isn't quite as callous or evil, so in order for the relatively popular Phelmina to remain sympathetic someone had to take the derailment bullet and Wald drew the short straw, turning into an arrogant, competitive Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who framed his fiancee for attempted murder rather than her being a genuine attempted murderer who simply had a perfectly valid reason for her actions.
  • All Take and No Give: In the web novel, he loves Sophia with all his heart and has since they were children. He gives her his love, he gives up his position, his country and everything he has and what he gets in return is that when Sophia remembers he exists she might have sex with him, but probably just to prop up her own self image as a beautiful sexy vampire. She barely even registers any of this because she's far more obsessed with her mother figure Shiraori.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He was this back in the demon academy, acting like a Nice Guy toward everyone while asserting his superiority in all subjects and hiding his prideful and competitive personality. And then there's the fact that he mercilessly framed the fiancée he has known for years and had her expelled from high society and disowned by her family just so he could hope to pursue Sophia. Even then, he doesn't regret it.
  • Broken Ace: He's the son of a duke, had a fiancée, and was the best and most popular student in the demon academy until Sophia defeated him in every subject. Then he kept challenging her until he fell in love with her, prompting him to get rid of Phelmina. After joining the Tenth Army, he became painfully aware of the difference in power between him and his fellow soldiers (even admitting that he was the weakest of them all), so much so that he had to implore Sophia to make him a vampire so he could hope to keep up (and feel closer to her).
  • Daywalking Vampire: The first person Sophia turns after being forced to vampirize Merazophis. He's with her quite often as an aide of sorts.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Despite knowing that Sophia mind controlled him, he still loves her and is still pursuing her. However, the story portrays him as being quite pathetic because of this and she doesn't respect or value him much.
  • Elite Mook: In the light novel he makes an early cameo where he puts up a pretty decent fight but still almost gets killed by the hero party.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Amongst Shiraori's Tenth Army, Wald is incredibly disliked by most of its soldiers due to him being the reason of Phelmina's ruination.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Toward Merazophis, the object of Sophia's affection. He originally hoped to wait till he matched his age to ask for Sophia to make him a vampire, as he would consequently stop aging, but the frustration of being the weakest in the Tenth Army made him change his mind.
  • Hopeless Suitor: It's quite clear that Sophia isn't going to return his affections. She does seem to appreciate his faith in her and at least he's in a better position than the other otoge 'capture targets,' though it's a victory by default: Most of them wised up and Noped out of there once they had their free will back.
  • Kicked Upstairs: Wald, despite being the weakest in the Tenth Army, is actually one of its commanders due to his upbringing & knowledge on commanding troops. This is met with dismay amongst the soldiers who only recognize Phelmina & Shiraori as their rightful commanders.
  • Love at First Punch: He falls in love with Sophia ever since she beats her at every aspect in the Demon Academy.
  • Mad Love: Doesn't really mind the rather shitty things Sophia does to the people around her and would do anything for her even when he knows she doesn't care about him much. The story does not hesitate for a second to acknowledge how pathetic and even contemptible this makes him to sacrifice everything for someone who can barely remember he exists after knowing him for over a decade.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Sophia claims with shock at one point that she will never use the pyramid like power structure of kin domination to make her own vampire army because she values her only kin, Merazophis, much too highly to degrade him by making more. At this point she has once again forgotten that Wald exists.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: Effectively! Sophia didn't even notice Phelmina's bullying and can barely remember the girl because she doesn't value Wald, but when Phelmina realize that Sophia is obsessed with Shiraori, she begins prodding the other girl by competing. This puts Shiraori in the position of the love 'winner' even though she's more akin to a mother figure for Sophia.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: Wald doesn't really accept results below than first in the Demon Academy, that Phelmina actually has to hold herself back just to not hurt his pride. Until he met Sophia, Wald was the first in every aspect in the academy and what made himself fall in love with Sophia was that the latter is a insurmountable and gradually accepted his massive loss on Sophia.

Suelecia "Sue" Analeit

Voiced by: Yui Ogura (Japanese), Kira Buckland (English) Foreign VAs

Shun's little sister, born from a different mother at the same time as himself. She is fiercely devoted to him and is quick to threaten violence against any perceived threats or rivals. She is aware that there is something odd about her brother, but has yet to muster the courage to ask him directly about his connection to Katia and the elf Filimøs.

  • The Ace: Unlike the reincarnators, who only excel as they do because they were born with a heap of skill points, unique skills and older mindsets and fresh, un-eroded souls, Sue is a genuine born genius who excels at everything she does because of her own talent.
  • A-Cup Angst: The author included joke breast rankings with the top and bottom three. The top three are basically jokes like including Mother at the top while at the bottom is the likes of Sue. Her response is just "Ugh."
  • Big Brother Attraction: Her love of her brother is a bit more intense than would be expected between siblings.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Sue is brainwashed into killing her own father. It's then revealed that she and most of Shun's allies are under the control of Hugo. Hugo himself is being subtly nudged by Shiraori, but in large part his actions are his own doing.
  • Child Prodigy: Sue nearly matched Shun's perceived genius growth on her own without any outside-System assistance like he had.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She really hates to see Shun with other girls. Although, she does eventually mellow out towards Katia and other rival girls, such that there's no indication she'd try to actually kill them.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: She is drawn with half-lidded eyes to show her lack of interest in anyone who isn't her brother Shun.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: She has sky blue hair and her best magical affinity is water. Also counts for Elemental Eye Colors.
  • Evil Is Petty: Assisted Hugo in brainwashing Yuri because Sue didn't like her getting close to her brother.
  • Greed: Her desire for a romantic relationship with her brother, who doesn't reciprocate, results in her never gaining the Chastity skill despite Shiraori's hopes. Instead, she gets Greed.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: She ends up turning away from Shiraori after her brother tells her that while he can never return her romantic love, she'll always be his little sister. But she's still not exactly the nicest person in the world.
  • Hime Cut: She has blunt bangs, shoulder length sidelocks, and hip length hair, showing her royal status.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Despite her obvious incestuous feelings for her brother, Shun won't ever love her as anything more than family. Even when telling her to give up, it's clear that it's not going to be that easy.
  • Incest-ant Admirer: Shun knows that she's in love with him, but he only views her as his little sister. Her obsessive love makes Shun rather worried about her behavior. Even someone super powerful as Shiraori feels uncomfortable around Sue and dislikes having to deal with her because of how much she babbles on about Shun.
  • Knight Templar Big Sister: While she's the younger sister, Sue is very protective of her beloved brother Shun and won't hesitate to kill anyone she perceives as a threat to him.
  • Not Brainwashed: Sue is apparently brainwashed by Hugo into betraying her family. When we later see the story from Shiraori's perspective, it turns out Sue actually agreed to this with almost no qualms as soon as Shiraori framed the perspective of a cheesy romance narrative between her and her brother. She was only put under charm near the end when the scales were ramping up and she was needed to assassinate her own father, a point at which she likely would have chickened out. In the light novel, she and Sophia talk about how she was never brainwashed at all, though she might just believe she's still acting of her own free will.
  • Patricide: While under Hugo's charm, she assassinates her own father and frames Shun for it.
  • Regal Ringlets: She's a princess with a ringlet hairstyle.
  • Yandere: Her obsession with her brother is at a fever pitch, to the point of making her feel a murderous intent towards anyone who might take him away from her. Her yandereness briefly spikes after the mind control on her is broken, but Shun manages to truly mellow her out by making it clear he'll always be her brother, even if he can't return her feelings.

Julius is the third prince of the Analeit kingdom. While politically insignificant, he also happens to be the current hero and is therefore considered the greatest warrior humanity has to offer. He is kind, noble, brave and actually recognizes demons as being fellow people and not a implacable force of destruction. Just as Shun strives to live up to his sister's expectations, so too does Julius work to live up to Shun's.

Unfortunately, he was instantly killed in action at the start of the war by a mysterious white figure.

  • The Apprentice: Julius, alongside Aurel, is a disciple of the Great Mage Ronandt though he has to stop midway due to almost being killed by Ronandt's training.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Julius is teased by Hyrince on his bond with Aurel, Ronandt's other disciple and silently agrees with the latter on the growth on "that" department.
  • Celibate Hero: Julius avoids the topic of romance due to the risks being The Hero entails
  • Covert Pervert: In volume 11, Julius can be quite perverse when it comes to topic of sex when the party teases Yaana after rescuing her from Boelleros.
  • Death by Irony: In the manga, Julius fought in the War in Sariella as a child and saved Kumoko from being killed by Ariel. Fifteen years later, Kumoko — as Shiraori — repays the favor by killing Julius. In the web novel, she saved him from friendly fire the first time and still killed him the second.
  • Death by Origin Story: He serves as an example of what a true hero should be for his brother, but is then killed at the start of the story so that Shun can become the hero instead.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Yaana's death is what fueled Julius into a legendary feat of defeating and killing a Queen Taratect, albeit a weaker copy courtesy of Shiraori's clone. It doesn't last long as Shiraori herself dealt with him.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His super senses that keep Shiraori from keeping an eye on him are half the reason she decides to kill him. After all, as the System loses energy from granting free skills every time he defeated someone because of a bug in the [Hero] title's design, having him run around unsupervised could've doomed the entire world.
  • Implied Answer: Julius, when asked by Yaana about how he feels about Aurel, is silent and can only smile at her. This increases Yaana's ire and is being teased too much on the party.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Julius knows that Yaana has romantic feelings for him, but he can't reciprocate those feelings due to being The Hero and the risks it entails
  • Memento Macguffin: His most prized possession is a spider silk scarf given to him by his mother just before her death. He never realizes that the spider who made it is the one that traumatized him just a few years later and eventually killed him. Ariel ended up improving it and giving it back to him at one point and it eventually ends up in Shun's hands. He doesn't know she made it either.
  • Nice Guy: He's not very strong, but is a very noble and kind man that serves to inspire Shun. Notably, he bears no hatred for the demons and gives Bloe multiple chances to withdraw.
  • No Body Left Behind: His entire body (along with those of most of his party) were immediately reduced to dust from Shiraori's Evil Eyes attack.
  • One-Hit Kill: Though Shun is convinced he must have died due to a dirty trick or being mobbed by enemies, he's shocked to see that a pure white girl simply looked at him and turned him and his whole party to dust.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He always has a gentle smile on his face. Kumoko thinks that normally she'd find that super suspicious but in his case it's entirely genuine and works.
  • Super-Senses: Paranoia induced. The Nightmare traumatized him, so he's always alert for white spiders. This causes him to be able to find and destroy any of Shiraori's clones that try to keep an eye on him and is one reason she decides to kill him: Killing her clones doesn't hurt her at all, but it removes a non negligible amount of energy from the System due to a bug in the Hero title's design.
  • Trauma Button: After running into the Nightmare of the Labyrinth and nearly getting killed as a result, Julius seems to have developed a paranoia regarding white spiders and becomes the only target that Shiraori cannot properly observe as a result: He keeps killing her clones even though no one else is able to detect them but him.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hyrince_anime.png

Second son of the Analeit Kingdom's Duke Quarto and Julius' best friend since childhood and a shield knight in his party.

  • Childhood Friends: He was close friends with Julius since childhood.
  • Cool Big Bro: He acts as an older brother figure towards Shun, especially after his actual older brother Julius dies.
  • Failure Knight: Having failed to protect Julius from dying at Shiraori's hands, Hyrince swears to serve as the shield bearer for the new hero, Shun.
  • God in Human Form: Hyrince was actually stillborn. Güliedistodiez transferred a portion of his soul into the stillborn body to watch over the current holder of the Hero title, which enabled Hyrince to have viewable stats under the system.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: He carries a large shield with him.
  • Sole Survivor: He's the only member of the Hero party who wasn't killed by Shiraori during the battle against the Demon Lord's army.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: His eyebrows have "kinks" near the end.

The king of the Kingdom of Analeit and the father of Shun and his siblings.

  • Doesn't Know Their Own Child: Despite his genuine paternal love for his children, Meiges never truly got to really know the personalities and feelings of his sons and daughters. This is evident where he was oblivious to Cylis' inferiority complex and jealousy towards his three youngest children and was oblivious to Sue's more malicious aspects.
  • Good Parents: Meiges truly loves and cares for all of his children deeply.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His second son Julis is killed by Shiraori in battle. Meiges is distraught at the news and not wanting to lose another son, he decides to make his youngest son Shun his primary heir in an attempt to remove him from the front lines, much to Cylis' dismay.

Shun's eldest brother and the first prince of Analeit.

  • Aloof Big Brother: He's too busy with his duties as the crown prince to pay attention to his younger siblings. His feelings of jealousy towards the outstanding Julius, Shun and Sue also motivates him to treat them very coldly.
  • Ambition Is Evil: After he finds out his father planned to take away his birthright as the firstborn and make Shun the crown prince, Cylis conspires with Hugo to kill his father and frame Shun for their crime in order to ascend the throne.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Shun's Abel. Cylis can't accept it when his father plans to strip him of his birthright and make his youngest brother the heir to the throne. Therefore, he helps in Hugo's plot to have his father murdered and frame Shun for the crime.
  • The Evil Prince: With Hugo's help, Cylis schemes to have his father murdered to gain the throne.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Cylis suffered a strong sense of inferiority towards Julius, Shun and Sue due to their prodigious talents and abilities when compared to his own.

Shun's half-elf maid.

  • Court Mage: She used to work for the Analeit royal family as a mage, but retired from that life to raise Shun. She taught him magic.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Unlike basically every other elf alive, she is a kind-hearted woman. The blonde hair is standard.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Half-elves are discriminated against in the Elf Village, which is why she fled to another continent entirely to live in Analeit.
  • Hired Help as Family: Anna is an attendant who has served the royal family for generations, but Shun thinks of her as a foster mother because she's the one who raised him after the death of his biological mother.
  • Old Retainer: Anna doesn't look the part, but she served Shun's grandfather.
  • Parental Substitute: Because Shun's biological mother died when he was an infant, he considers Anna to be his mother for all other intents and puposes.
  • Taking the Bullet: She's fatally wounded when she uses her body to shield Shun from Wrath's sword. Which was useless anyway, since Wrath has no intention of killing any of the Reincarnators. Shun resurrects her, causing him to max out Taboo.
  • Undying Loyalty: She has served several generations of Shun's family because one of its kings took her in and valued her, which is the opposite of how her home town treated her. She insists on going back to said horrible town with Shun, specifically to continue taking care of him.

Renxandt Empire

    Ronandt Orozoi

Ronandt Orozoi

Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ronandt.png

Ronandt is the greatest magician of the human race boasting unparalleled knowledge and ability. In recent years he has taken a few disciples after briefly tutoring the hero Julius in his youth, but none of them meet his standards and he isn't a terribly good teacher.

He considers himself to have been conceited in the past due to his satisfaction with being at the top of the food chain when it came to magic. However, after meeting a certain individual he realized how hopelessly mediocre his talents were before true genius.

Obsessed with magic. Best not to make eye contact if he tries to get your attention.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Ronandt almost literally worships Kumoko and recognizes her through every stage of evolution up even as a completely human looking goddess, but she just thinks he's a creepy old dude with a magic fetish. Nevertheless, she allows him to stay and observe her even though she completely ignores him. Averted in the manga, where her first thought on seeing him is that he's her type.
  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Due to his experiences alongside Kumoko's spider hatchlings in the labyrinth, such as consuming poisonous monsters due to hunger, he has acquired and leveled up Poison resistance. Aurel once tried to poison Ronandt, in which he survives and even tells her that she needs 10 times the amount of poison to possibly kill him. Aurel even thinks that maybe Ronandt is a monster with a human disguise.
  • Always Someone Better: He's a genius when it comes to magic and the strongest mortal mage alive, but then he ran into Kumoko, who is a freak of nature that fascinates even the gods with her growth and talent.
  • The Archmage: Considered to be the strongest human mage alive. People just kind of assume the elves are probably better, but it turns out that they're also basically small fry compared to him and there don't seem to be any demons on par with him either. He can't take pride in this, though, because he knows Kumoko is far far better than he is.
  • Boring, but Practical: While most mages who turn the tide of war do so with big flashy explosions, Ronandt just maximizes the range and piercing power of low cost low power spells and then uses clairvoyant related abilities to instant and quickly snipe high value targets from afar.
  • Breakout Character: He was originally intended to be a one off character, but both the author and readers liked him a lot. He ended up at not quite the level of a main character, but something like a B lister with a continual presence at every stage of the story.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Considered this within the Empire; he's extremely eccentric and disrespectful, and mostly ignores their obsession with bloodline and nobility, but he gets away with it because he's too powerful for them to do without.
  • Cassandra Truth: Whenever he's praised as the greatest magic user in the world, he emphatically states that there is Always Someone Better and keeps referring to "his teacher" (i.e., Kumoko/Shiraori) as someone far beyond him in ability, which others think is just him being humble. Naturally, he's right, though post-Apotheosis, Shiraori is technically inferior to him in most magic types due to losing assistance from the System. She's definitely his better in Heresy, Darkness and Space Magic, and no-one is her better with non-system based magic, but for most of the rest of the magic types she's just doesn't care to relearn or use them.
  • Cool Old Guy: Ronandt is middle-aged at the start of the story and pushing into old age later on in the narrative. He actually becomes more dangerous as the story progresses, managing to destroy a robot with magic, something even Kumoko had trouble with. It's even mentioned by the author that increasing his status so much at his age and level (which is much easier to increase as a child and at low level) just shows how above the norm he is. He also insists on choosing his apprentices based on merit, defying the Empire's fixation on bloodlines and nobility, something he's only able to get away with due to his raw power and importance.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After his tragic encounter of Kumoko in the labyrinth, Ronandt knows that there are monsters humanity can't win against and now picks his fights wisely. Ronandt imparts this experience towards Julius, since the latter has also encountered Kumoko & also wishes this as a lesson for Shun after being powerless against him & Sophia during the battle of the Capital.
  • Going Native: In volume 6; Ronandt, who explores the labyrinth & wishes to be trained by Kumoko, experiences the life of her spiders in the labyrinth and is enamored by it. This proves to be a valuable experience for him as his power grew leaps & bounds beyond any human at that point, and he also wants to impart this experience towards his disciples.
  • Grumpy Old Man: He's a misanthropic old guy who only really seems to care about magic and to a lesser extent his apprentices.
  • Hero of Another Story: Pretty much every time we see him he's in the middle of some grand adventure or another that only tangentially intersects with the main story.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Despite his grumpy attitude and seemingly only caring about magic, he's clearly depressed after Julius' death and can't bring himself to really harm his little brother Shun as a result.
  • Humble Pie: Thought of himself as the greatest magician in the world until he met Kumoko and got a rude awakening when he saw her using completely ridiculous magic, even when using it without skills.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": He's considered the strongest living mage, but goes absolutely nuts whenever he sees Kumoko. He begs her to take him as an apprentice, which she finds creepy and understandably hard to deal with.
  • Naked People Are Funny: When he lives in the Labyrinth, he runs around totally naked. And he is proud of this fact, which causes a straight man and wise guy reaction from others such as White's parallel minds and Gülie.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: He is known as the "strongest human mage", and while he will accept that is true, he points out that there are many stronger non-human mages, such as his "master", i.e. Kumoko. Although it should be noted that, in volume 6, Komoko pegs him to be in the same magic power league as Earth Dragon Araba, so he is also pretty high among non-humans too.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Ronant or Ronandt? Some of the fan-translations of the web novels went with Ronant, but the official translations generally go with Ronandt.
  • Teleportation: He's the only living human with a decent grasp of space magic. The light novel shows him using it to great effect mid combat to keep out of Shun's range.
  • Too Dumb to Live: First, he brags that with him along this spider monster they're after will be easy as pie for him despite being at least A rank and clever enough to use magic and interact with humans socially. Kumoko meanwhile places him a little above a monster that's about B rank, which is way less powerful than an A rank, meaning his confidence is pretty empty. Next, he accidentally sets the monster's nest on fire when the mission's first priority is contacting it peacefully. Nobody wants their house burned down. Then he rudely uses Appraisal on it, which he should know is considered a prelude to attack by monsters and quite rude among intelligent people as well, should either notice. And after that, on realizing how powerful it is, he wants to stay and study with it even though it's plainly trying to kill him. Almost the entire party is wiped out as a result of his actions with only one other survivor, and even then just barely after the man became a human shield for him.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After getting destroyed by Kumoko he goes all in on power leveling. Despite his advanced age he still manages to reach a level of magic that would be a threat to monsters like Arch Taratects and some low to mid level dragons.
  • Training from Hell: After witnessing Shiraori's training in the Web Novel/her spiderling's training in the light novel, Ronandt tries to imitate them towards his own apprentices that most of the apprentices had to quit. Julius, The Hero himself, had to quit midway to having almost died and Aurel is having traumas on the training that she trains herself Space Magic to try & escape, which ironically made Ronandt have interest in her more, much to her chagrin.
  • Tsundere: He berates his apprentices, but cherishes them. He also has a blatant tsundere reaction when Hyrinth teases him about his concern for Julius' safety.

    Buirimus

Buirimus

Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa (Japanese) Foreign VAs

The summoner that accompanied Ronandt and a party of knights into the Elro Labyrinth to help capture or destroy the Nightmare. Unfortunately, the group enraged the creature by destroying its home accidentally, leading to the deaths of all involved except Ronandt and Buirimus himself, who were both badly wounded. For his failure he was demoted and sent to the Mystic Mountains.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Buirimus may have committed horrible crimes against Wrath's family and people without a second thought, but only because he considered them to literally be no more than animals. When he realizes his error he accepts his death calmly with his last thoughts only regret that he couldn't see his family again.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: When Wrath breaks free of his control and has massacred the entire subjugation unit, saving him for last, he has the gall to ask "Do you hate me?" The only response is a raised and swung sword. To his credit, his final moments are a realization that it was a very stupid question.
  • The Chew Toy: Gets wrecked by Kumoko, basically exiled to a frozen wasteland, separated from his family, his newborn daughter is kidnapped without ever having gotten a chance to meet her and finally killed by the lowly goblin he enslaved.
  • Did Not Think This Through: The normal method for taming a monster is to break its will and then make it psychologically dependent on the tamer. However, even by what little Buirimus knows, Wrath was a very special goblin capable of magic blacksmithing, indicating high intelligence and strong will. He also has the same [N%I=W] skill as Kumo, meaning he definitely merits special treatment. As such, his attempt to break Wrath fails and, naturally, anything he does after this point is doomed to just make Wrath even angrier, including his attempts to treat Wrath 'kindly.'
  • Heel Realization: Buirimus realizes as he's dying that the goblins he thought of as emotionless monsters had feelings and love for their family as well. Thinking back on how he made Razraz kill and eat his sister and turned his brother into a mindless weapon, he accepts that his death is deserved.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Especially from Wrath's point of view. He points at Razraz's sister and goes "Kill it. Eat it." Which is then magically transmitted into Razraz's brain, exactly as the command was spoken. When Wrath was finally able to retaliate, it's shown that Buirimus had no clue if it was his little brother or sister. He didn't care about a goblin's idea of family. Just another reason why he's earned Wrath's undying hatred and Unstoppable Rage.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: The only reason he and Ronandt survive their initial encounter with Kumoko is because he immediately orders Ronandt to teleport them out when it becomes clear how strong Kumoko is, including a Get A Hold Of Yourself Man punch to the face when Ronandt, obsessed at first sight, tries to argue they need to stay and study it.
  • Obliviously Evil: The man who enslaved Kyouya genuinely did not think goblins were anything more than normal monsters, which are only about as smart as an animal. It's only when his slave breaks his control that he finally, fully realizes how terrible he is.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: After Kumoko destroys the subjugation party sent after her with laughable ease, Buirimus is demoted and sent to manage an outpost in the middle of nowhere filled with unruly subordinates and no chance to get back into the good graces of the higher ups. This makes him desperate for achievements, which is why he enslaves a goblin with a unique blacksmithing skill.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Buirimus grew increasingly uneasy at seeing his goblin blacksmith's Anger skill skyrocket and begin to develop skills like Curse or Rage. However, he just continued acting like it was just another monster that would one day come around and grow to love him as all summoned monsters are supposed to.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Remember Wrath wiping out a country? Buirimus is the one who put him in that state by thinking that a few head pats, talking sweetly, and feeding Raz his favorite meals would be enough to make up for forcing him to kill and eat his own sister and providing weapons to the very beings who not only slaughtered his home village, but were marching on other goblin villages too.

Holy Kingdom of Alleius

    Dustin LXI

Dustin LXI

Voiced by: Takashi Matsuyama (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dustin_lxi_color.png

Dustin is the pope of the Word of God religion. He keeps the human nations focused on the demon threat and stops them from warring amongst themselves as best as he can. He is politically devious and a utilitarian in nature. He is willing to do anything it takes to ensure the survival of humanity.

  • Admiring the Abomination: Dustin shows an odd interest in Shiraori, seeing her as the force that set the world in motion after being stagnant for far too long.
  • Anti-Magic: His skill [Harmony] allows him to completely negate the effect of any attack he chooses to negate, but it comes with the price of his body receiving a blowback effect proportional to it. It can even negate the attacks of gods, but we don't get to see if Dustin lived from the blowback of that.
  • Batman Gambit: After the worldwide presentation of each side's arguments for the Final Battle, Dustin, aware that he would become despised by many of the people for insisting to sacrifice the person who saved them all, informs his subordinates to spread the message that "the Church requests you support the White God (ie, Shiro)", counting on The Power of Hate to drive people to support "the Black God (ie, Gulie)" just to spite Dustin, unaware that they would actually be supporting the god allied with him. The world does not disappoint him.
  • Crazy Sane: While he pities Merazophis for having thrown away everything in his life that doesn't revolve around Sophia, Dustin himself has kept going for thousands of years based off of his obsession to protect humanity. Everything he does is based off a strict adherence to utilitarian ethics right to the point of inhumanity.
  • Determinator: Dustin resolved to protect humanity at all costs and has followed through on that promise without hesitation for sixty-one lifetimes. Even the gods admit his determination is monstrous.
  • The Extremist Was Right: Dustin forbid the use of MA energy in his nation and enforced that with his army, even when the citizens rioted. As a result his nation was spared the worst of the dragons' wrath and after the war ended he was treated as the world leader. There was no solid reason to distrust MA energy except that he didn't think energy could come from anywhere with no limit and no downside.
  • Fantastic Racism: He doesn't seem to consider demons to be humans even though they're actually both the same race with demons just having gotten a bit of fantasy genetic engineering. As such, his goals include their elimination in favor of human survival.
  • Flying Dutchman: He was alive before the System was implemented and since then has been reincarnated with his memories each time he dies thanks to the Temperance skill. Having made his choice to protect humanity at any cost in his first life, he has committed every life that follows to the same cause.
  • Guile Hero: Depending on whether you view him as a hero or not; he has almost no combat capability, and even lacks the supernatural information-gathering advantages of the other sides, but his extensive experience from numerous lifetimes combined with his high intelligence means that he can accurately guess what's going on from the slightest scraps of information. For instance, he notices Potimas' involvment in human trafficking and immediately guesses that it's intended as cover to hide the abduction of particular children. He's also able to engage in Xanatos Speed Chess when Kumoko's interference upsets his plans to defeat the Goddess religion militarily, turning her involvement to his advantage.
  • Keystone Army: He becomes critical to the anti Shiro forces after the world quest begins because if he's gone even for a few years his side will have no leader at all as well as putting his Ruler authority itself at risk.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He knows nothing about D beyond that there was an even more powerful god who helped Gülie implement the System. Shiraori and Gülie deliberately don't enlighten him because both figure the knowledge that they're all toys in a sadistic game played for the amusement of a being more powerful than any of the gods he knows would cause his psyche to collapse. And indeed, he's rather disturbed by D when she temporarily hijacks the System in the finale to callously announce that Final Battle will now commence and she hopes everyone will try their best to entertain her.
  • A Million Is a Statistic: He's the kind of person who will nonchalantly condemn 10,000 people to death if it means 10,001 will live. He's fully aware of it and feels no shame at all in revealing this mindset to others either. However, this is only when talking about human lives. If the plan involves uncertainty in whether more human lives than others will be spared, and if more human lives could be saved in the short-term even though it could prove very risky in the long term, he'll also take the short-term benefit plan. He doesn't give a damn about anything as long as he can ensure more humans live for as long as possible.
  • Non-Action Guy: When Shun appraises him, he sees that Dustin is still at level one with no combat skills at all apart from those granted by his titles, but high levels in passive skills meant to play a support role in combat like Memory and Thought Acceleration.
  • The Sleepless: Since he has Sleep Nullity he technically doesn't need sleep to live, but in practice the mental fatigue builds up and he does have to sleep occasionally.

Sophia's human parents, Merazophis' original masters, and governors of the Keren County.

  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Seras has little-to-no tolerance alcohol, losing consciousness at the slightest sip, yet equally found herself drawn to the liquor.
  • Classy Cravat: John wears a cravat to show his status as a wealthy landlord.
  • Good Parents: From what little is seen of them, they're shown to be loving parents to Sophia. When they were about to die, their biggest regret was not being able to be there to see Sophia grow up. When thinking back about them, Sophia describes them as "wonderful people".
  • Hero-Worshipper: After Kumoko saves her and her family from bandits, Seras comes to believe she's the Divine Beast of the Goddess Religion. She preaches to the townspeople, leading to their worship of Kumoko, who takes up residence in the nearby forest.
  • Oblivious to Love: Seras never realized that Merazophis was in love with her.
  • Rescue Introduction: They're introduced when Kumoko saves them from bandits that attacked their carriage.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Seras closely resembles her daughter Sophia when the latter grows older.
  • Take Care of the Kids: Seconds before they are murdered, they ask Merazophis to take care of their daughter Sophia.

Gods

    "D"

"D"

Voiced by: Saori Hayami (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d_3.png
"Welcome. Or maybe I should say ‘Welcome back’?"

"Please try your best to entertain me, okay?"

"D", no true name given, is the most powerful recurring character in the series and known as the goddess of the end. She is the highest rank Administrator within the System and has been keeping an eye on the reincarnators, especially Kumoko. She is whimsical, dangerous and motivated entirely by the search for new entertainment.

Her actual job appears to be managing the netherworld, but she has a habit of skipping out from work whenever possible so that she can pursue, shall we say, other interests.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Unfortunately for Shiraori, "D" finds her far too fascinating, and "D" steadily develops a strong interest in her and her activities. Eventually, even the dense Shiraori can detect that "D"'s interest in her is dangerously close to becoming an obsession.
  • Abusive Parents: She's the closest thing Shiraori has to a real mother, but not only did she throw her into a labyrinth expecting her to die a miserable death as a joke, she also seemingly built her to have social phobias and a personality disorder. For no reason except entertainment
  • A-Cup Angst: D is far from flat-chested, but seems to have a grudge against anyone with even larger breasts than hers, so she fiddled with all the reincarnators' genetics so that they'd be unlikely to grow bigger ones than her, though two of them did anyway.
  • The Archmage: The System is a piece of magic so fantastically complex that Gülie and Sariel can not even begin to decipher it, yet she seemingly made it on a whim right before offering it. It's also highly flexible and easy to alter for her and despite the complexities is noted to run very smoothly with minimal bugs or errors. That said, she doesn't hold a candle to Shiraori when it comes to non-system based magic, since she still uses the ten step method, where Shiraori reduced the needed steps to less than half. The irony that her pseudo-clone is a better pure mage is not lost on her.
  • Bait the Dog: At first, she seems like a quirky aloof ally figure who just wants to have a little fun and enjoys teasing Kumoko. As the story goes on, however, it becomes only too clear how incredibly callous she is to everyone around her and how 'just wants to have a little fun' may be true, but her idea of 'a little fun' is consigning millions or billions of mostly innocent souls to a tortuous purgatory for shits and giggles and making them live life in a combat RPG. Not only that, the end result thanks to her will most likely be the complete destruction of all their souls. And every time it seems like someone might make some progress in actually fixing things, she throws in a wrench or two to keep things exciting. At this point, things like her teasing Kumoko with ice cream take on different significance.
  • Big-Breast Pride: She seems to value her buxom figure so much that she sabotaged the reincarnation of the other girls so none of them would be bigger than her. She's unhappy that Sophia and Katia managed to get buxom figures anyway.
  • Bizarre Alien Reproduction: Gülie theorizes based on the wording of the 14 ruler skill descriptions that the System exists not just for "D"'s entertainment, but to see if she can create a god like herself. And indeed, when Kumoko achieves apotheosis, "D" immediately starts identifying Kumoko as her kin.
  • Blatant Lies: Claims she reincarnated her classmates out of a feeling of responsibility, despite sending them to a world far more dangerous than their original one and actively putting many of them into dangerous situations for her own entertainment.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She seems to be a believer in this, and is happy to have a buxom figure herself. She even goes out of her way just to sabotage the genetics of the reincarnators so they would end up with flat chests.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: She calls herself the Worst Evil God and she's not joking. She also calls Kumoko rude for thinking of D as a self-centered monster but admits that she's not wrong either. While this seems exaggerated at first, as time goes on it's shown only too well what this truly means.
  • Complete Immortality: In one of the "Teach Us, D-sensei!" chapters, D admits to having perpetual youth & longevity towards Meido when the latter beheads her and destroys D's body. D has to carry on the segment with only her head remaining as punishment from Meido.
  • Creepy Monotone: Her voice is so completely without human emotion or warmth that it creeps people right the hell out. Dustin is basically shivering the first time he hears her speak.
  • Crocodile Tears: During one "Teach Us, D-sensei!" segment, D pretends to cry after a harsh comment from the Maid. It's more creepy than anything because her expression and voice never change.
  • Dark Is Evil: While Shiraori's magic abilities are rather negative, most of them are actually inherited from D. Shiraori's own magic affinity only particularly favors space magic whereas her ability to use dark and heresy magic come from D.
  • The Dreaded: Evil God "D" is feared by even the other gods. So far only the Maid is shown to be able to handle her.
  • Emotionless Girl: She never displays any emotion and never seems to feel any beyond amusement at the suffering of others. This is one more reason people hate her.
  • Everyone Hates Hades: She's strongly implied to be a death god and the ruler of the netherworld. She's also lazy, selfish, cruel, and almost completely lacking in empathy. That being said, this seems to be more of a personal thing than applying to death gods as a whole, which seem to function as a celestial bureaucracy and dislike her just as much as the rest of the cast.
  • Evil Counterpart: The story doesn't call much attention to it apart from their appearances, but almost everything bad about Shiraori is embodied by D, only worse. Even their appearances contrast: While they look otherwise near identical, Shiraori has a pure white color scheme while D is more associated with shadows, black and darkness.
    • Shiro's primary flaw is mostly the sin of sloth, or possibly the slightly older acedia, though neither exclusively in the more commonly known expressions.
      • She avoids difficult self-improvement, shirks most of her responsibilities or delegates them and has the double whammy of finding it hard to understand how people feel and frequently not really caring unless they're people she knows.
      • D amplifies this: She's implicitly the lord of the underworld, but frequently runs way from work to behave like a lazy teenager and forces responsibility on those below her when she could easily handle everything herself. While D does understand how people feel, she doesn't care even in the slightest whether she's causing pain and shows no empathy at all for anyone. Her default attitude is also sheer apathy towards everything apart from selfish amusements.
    • Both of them exhibit pride, though in different forms.
      • Shiro thinks she knows better than everyone and is secretly trying to prove her own self worth to herself because of deep insecurities. She makes judgments for the world without asking for the consent of the people because she's sure her plan is better than any alternative. Meanwhile, throughout the story, she regularly engages in reckless and near-suicidal behavior in order to maintain her own sense of self worth. Which is a largely fruitless effort, as shown during a moment of vulnerability when crippled by caffeine.
      • Meanwhile, D knows she's one of the strongest gods in all of existence and seems to view everything else in the world as toys for her amusement, ruining their lives or giving them gifts completely at a whim. She treats the world of the story like a small child that pulls the wings off an insect to watch it wriggle.
    • The final of the sins they share, gluttony, has a similar contrast.
      • Shiro regularly engages in overindulgence, engaging in behavior that can maybe be considered justifiable in context but sickening outside it. However, when called out on it, she makes an effort to improve. When Bloe restricts her food access to her because of the food shortages in the demon lands, she begins providing intelligence reports and basically takes the food as her wages. Still gluttony, but at least something she earned. Also, throughout Sophia's childhood, Shiro regularly overindulges in alcohol and lashes out against her surrogate daughter in amusing but still abusive ways. But when this is shown to her, she stops.
      • Meanwhile, D doesn't directly take literal food from the starving, but she does taunt Kumoko about how she's eating delicious ice cream when Kumoko is nearly starving and in a miserable pit of lava. She also uses her power for purely selfish motivations, never using it to actually help those who need it. Later in the story she even basically steals the power people have collected within the System to curse them to make them fight more for her amusement. They desperately needed this power and generated it themselves, but she just took it and used it to make things worse for them.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor:
    • Many of the reincarnated individuals had their new lives purposefully tweaked in cruel ways as a sort of joke which only D would ever know was being made.
    • D created Kumoko, a thinking being with emotions and a soul, with the intent for her to die as part of a prank on her subordinates. Meido doesn't get the joke.
  • Evil Is Petty:
    • When Kumoko is stuck in the Elro Labyrinth with only poison to eat and having spent a long time in the lava hell of the middle layer, D taunts her by talking about all the yummy ice cream she's eating.
    • "D" making sure that none of the female reincarnated students would have bigger breasts than her certainly is this trope. She also has a habit of teasing Kumoko and at one point inflicted excruciating pain on her because she (correctly) suspected Kumoko was thinking rude things about "D".
    • Shiraori suspects that Katia was reincarnated as a girl as a kind of prank because Kanata confessed to her without really wanting to go out with her. He just wanted it to be clear to onlookers that he wasn't gay or nothing, no sir, and he can point to his unrequited love Wakaba Hiiro to prove it.
    • She also transformed Mirei into a dragon rather than a human, which she hates because she took a lot of pride in her appearance. Since D also has a strong personal dislike for dragons, it can be taken as an indication that D found her attempts at bullying to be annoying at the very least.
    • She reincarnated Kumoko with fake memories of being an unattractive and unpopular girl for no apparent reason even though she simply expecting the spider girl to die. This didn't actually help D at all but is seemingly just her being a dick. The web novel tones this down and makes it more due to laziness than actual malice.
  • Fourth-Wall Mail Slot: In special Q&A sections, D takes on the position of the author and answers some questions about the story from explaining why the reincarnators are so immature to clarifying that Kumoko's massive growth was actually a result of her own ability with only a few nudges like D's soul fragment working as her core or the crutch of Magic Extremity to speed things up.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Shiraori and Gülie speak with D with some regularity and don't hide anything from her, but both dislike her, as does Sariel. There's just nothing that can be done about someone who is as much above a normal god as a god is above a little spider. Shiraori becomes her kin and therefore should have nothing to fear from her, but still plans to run away because D is just that obnoxious, untrustworthy and detestable.
  • The Gods Must Be Lazy: She'd rather sit around playing games all day than do her actual divine duty. If she wasn't the most powerful being in the setting, everything she does to get out of doing real work would border on Laborious Laziness.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Played with. While Shiraori is the Big Bad of Shun's personal story, far, far above her is D, who basically made the world shitty on purpose and continues to make things harder for everyone for the entertainment value. Unfortunately, she doesn't really care what everyone does or who wins as long as there's entertaining conflict. Oh, and she's more powerful than most of the other gods in the universe combined, and isn't even on the planet. So there's no real way to thwart her "plans" or even harm her. On the other hand, without her indirect involvement, the planet would have cracked in half and everyone would have died centuries ago.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: It's not entirely clear what she's after. There seems to be at least three things she wants and we only know one for sure with a second being implied. She wants entertainment and the System seems designed to birth a god like herself, which succeeds when Kumoko undergoes apotheosis. However, it's hinted that there may be something more to her. Notably, after the (second) deaths of the reincarnators, she apparently grabbed onto their souls and is doing something with them.
  • Humanoid Abomination: D frequently comes across as someone just playacting at being human and not doing a terribly good job of it. Her pupils are described as horrifying black holes, having her head chopped off is such a minor inconvenience for her she won't even bother regenerating her body until she's done with a lengthy lecture, and her hair will just start floating around in the air whenever she stops caring about hiding her true nature. Sariel finds her disturbing and others find her lack of emoting to be creepy and insulting in their insincerity.
  • I Have Many Names: "D" is known to all the gods but not her actual name; D is just what she tells people to call her. She is alternately known as the Nameless God, God of the End, Death God, Evil God, Absolute Paradox, and Wakaba Hiiro.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Despite being an immortal Death God who's been around for eons at the least, D's preferred form is a teenage girl. She enjoys acting like one too, playing video games, eating junk food, and even posing as a high school student. Even her manipulations of Kumoko and others are all about childishly entertaining herself and minimizing her own responsibility.
  • Invincible Villain: She's the greatest evil in the story, but nobody even considers directly opposing her due to how hopeless of an endeavor it would be. Instead, they have to try to solve problems without going against the constraints D has set or she'll make things harder for everyone.
  • It Amused Me: The entire motivation of "D" is to get out of her work in the Celestial Bureaucracy and be entertained. This includes adding unnecessary game elements to the System, screwing around with Kumoko, hanging out on Earth, and so on.
  • It's All About Me: Almost everything Evil God "D" does is because she's bored and wants entertainment. This includes modifying Kumoko's soul and memories as a five minute joke, not expecting the spider to survive.
  • Jerkass Gods
    • She watches Kumoko struggle largely for her own amusement and has teased her with things such as Spider Self-Destruct buttons and trolling her by telling her she's enjoying some nice ice cream when all Kumoko has to eat are bitter poisons and raw meat while going through a lava hellscape.
    • A major reason "D" gave Kumoko her memories is that it would distract the other gods, who were trying to make "D" get back to work; "D" fully expected Kumoko to die early on.
    • The backstory reveals D could have just used some of her own massive stores of soul energy to restore the planet if she actually felt like it. However she only got involved to amuse herself so she instead claimed the Skill System was necessary.
Narrator: Merely for the reason that it wouldn’t be interesting otherwise, Sariel will be bound as the System’s nexus for many years to come, Gülie will be put to work while unaware of that, and the planet's inhabitants will be forced to continue to kill each other. Everything, is for D’s amusement.
    • One of the reasons Oka is reincarnated as an elf and has the Student Roster skill is because D knows that Oka, as a sensible adult, feels a certain amount of responsibility to her students and would try to save them from their certain deaths. D downright insults her for fully trusting the skill, in which D even tampers with false information from time to time, and placing most of the reincarnations unto Potimas, the very last person Oka should trust.
    • D's meddling doesn't simply confine itself to the past. After the main plot and side stories finally catch up with each other, Shiro is finally able to explain the situation to the rest of the Reincarnators... about as well as she can, at least. While she gives them some space to mull things over, D forces a system-wide announcement in the form of a "World Quest" and summarizes all of Shiro's machinations and goals in the most unflattering and misleading way possible, in the process outing her as an Evil God to the population at large.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk
    • Despite being a self-proclaimed Evil God and frequently punishing Kumoko for perceived slights, D is also responsible for saving Sariel's life and creating the System which saved the planet. This seeming good deed was motivated solely by the potential entertainment of forcing an entire planet of mortals to live in a combat-focused RPG; she could have fixed the problem easily but chose to let millions suffer for fun.
    • Before the story begins, the previous Hero and Demon King worked together to launch a massive attack that blew up the classroom D was in due to complicated shenanigans. D was unharmed and the explosion was surprisingly smaller than you might expect considering the energy used. Eventually it turns out that D misappropriated it and had been setting it aside. She holds on to it until she can think of a better use for it. Eventually she decides she'll give it back... in the form of basically cursing every human and demon on the planet to force them to choose sides. The energy can't really be used like this for the intended purpose but instead is just making things worse.
  • Karma Houdini: Not only does she get away with everything in the end, she also gets to keep Shiro as a toy after the latter fails to fake her own death successfully.
  • Laughably Evil: She is heartless and delights in watching others suffer for her own amusement. But the fact she is so petty and childish means it's impossible not to get a laugh out of her.
  • Lazy Bum: She generally won't do anything unless there's some entertainment in it for her or someone even stronger comes to make her do her job.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Not her, but rather, what Gülie, Ariel and Shiraori do to almost everyone who doesn't already know of D. They all figure everyone is better off not knowing anything about D, what her role was in the current state of the world or how her mere existence affects the events of the present story.
  • No Cure for Evil: Averted. Despite ruling over darkness and death and admitting herself to being "the worst Evil God", as a god she can use treatment magic far beyond mortals. This includes using magic to recover good as new after having her body reduced to mincemeat by Meido in a Q&A section. After she's finished the Q&A section of course.
  • No-Sell: The Hero and Demon King launched about 70% of a planet's total energy stockpile at her, though not intentionally. Not only did it not do a thing to her, but they killed themselves in the process.
  • One-Letter Name: The "Evil God" that created the system tells people to just call her "D", probably because going by "Death" would be a bit too on the nose.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The actual name of "D" is completely unknown, even to other gods. D, Wakaba Hiiro, Bald-san, and so on are just pseudonyms.
D: Ah, I suppose it is inconvenient to be nameless. Let’s see, then please call me D.
  • Pragmatic Villainy
    • She helped save the world once. Not because she values human lives or anything, but because she then got the chance to force millions or billions to live in a JRPG combat world until their souls eroded and started to collapse.
    • She dumps a bunch of fresh souls into the System after a cataclysmic failure that will guarantee the entire idea will collapse without outside assistance and then gives said souls special abilities to see if they can improve the situation. The catch? She doesn't actually care if they succeed or make things worse and in fact finds more fun milking the drama.
  • Psychopomp: It's mentioned in passing that she's supposed to be governing the netherworld but is ditching work. She also has direct control over at least some souls passing on. She uses this ability to force her classmates to reincarnate in a very unusual way and strongly implies that once they die a second time she's grabbing their souls for some purpose before they can move on. This is likely why she could trap the souls of the ancient civilization in the System.
  • Sinister Silhouettes: Prior to her reveal as the true Wakaba Hiiro, D is only ever depicted as the black silhouette of a teenage girl with an unnaturally large smile.
  • The Stoic: D's face and tone never vary from completely expressionless, regardless of what she is saying or doing. The Maid finds it especially annoying when she pretends to cry while her face and voice are still the same.
  • Telepathy: She can read people's minds easily if she chooses to, but seems to refrain by default. Which is probably because it's boring to always know what someone is thinking. She constantly reads Kumoko/White's mind because of how little she speaks, however.
  • Troll: She seems to enjoy hurting people by rubbing salt in their wounds or specifically setting them up for failure via lies and manipulation. Even her minor acts of evil pettiness like talking about ice cream to Kumoko is almost literally taunting a starving man with food.
  • Villains Love Entertainment: Her one and only motivation for making others' lives into a living hell is keeping herself entertained. The flashback arc similarly reveals she obviously had enough spare power to repair the world all on her own, but only had an interest in helping to restore the planet if it meant she'd get to force the humans, Gyruie, and Sariel into playing a game to amuse her instead.
Kumoko: This person is seriously dangerous... a genuine evil god. From her point of view, my entire life, from the moment I was born till the day I die, is just a bit of entertainment.
D: Well, though that's a terrible way to put it, you're not wrong.
  • Villains Never Lie: Despite knowing how powerful and untrustworthy D is, Gülie instantly believes her when she says the System is the only solution she had to the planet's energy crisis. In truth, she could have fixed it herself with trivial ease. But that wouldn't be interesting, would it?
  • Walking Spoiler: Her true identity recontextualizes everything about "Kumoko". Not only is "D" revealed to be the real Wakaba Hiiro, it comes tandem with the reveal that "Kumoko" isn't Wakaba and was just a random house spider that "D" threw into the world for fun.
  • Wasted Beauty: "D" is literally a divine beauty, but her personality and character is also literally universally reviled.
  • Wild Card: She tends to cause a lot of problems for fun and her title of the Worst Evil God doesn't appear to be for show, but so long as it's entertaining she can also be very helpful. In the short term.

"Do I have regrets? I have an endless amount."

Gülie, also known as Kuro, is the first Administrator seen in the series. He's covered head to foot in black armor that is implied to actually be his skin. Only his eyes abandon the black color theme with their glowing red character. He is in fact a true dragon unlike the lesser dragons encountered such as Araba or Kagna.

His duty is to defend the world from outside interference and ensure the proper completion of the System's goals. His only desire is to fulfill the will of Sariel. However, he has a passive personality and tends not to interfere or act even when it's clear that something needs to be done, causing him to simply watch as the demons begin to plan their massive, destructive war.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Tries to have Kumoko indirectly assassinated in volume five of the light novel because he thinks she's causing problems. At this point, all she's really done is killed people that attacked her first, wiped out some bandits and set up a healing shrine. He justifies this by saying the only reason he acted is because he wished to help an old friend out (Ariel), and when Kumoko somehow survives the attempt, he shows up to apologize, gives her sustenance for her evolution and promises to leave her alone for now.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: He's the most powerful being on the planet with the ability to interfere in its affairs, but spends most of his time observing while only taking small actions with insignificant effects in the long run. This is not entirely of his own will as D explicitly forbids him from making major moves with guaranteed intended outcomes, as that wouldn't be interesting at all.
  • Always Someone Better: His feelings towards Shiraori have shades of this. In spite of being a newborn god, Shiraori has an uncanny ability to learn, rediscovering how to access her powers within two years of deification when he expected her to take at least a hundred. When he goes into battle against Shiraori, he also ruefully muses how someone a small fraction of his age has accrued more experience, skills, strategies and tactics than he has in his entire lifetime.
  • Black Knight: Wears black horned armor that makes him look the part.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He wears black and menacing looking armor and his color motif is black, but is one of the most noble and reasonable and just wants to protect people.
  • Determined Defeatist: He actually knew going into his fight with Shiraori that he probably wasn't going to win and would probably need a miracle to beat her. He still tried. He muses that she probably doesn't even realize that he didn't stand much of a chance against her and that she's absurdly tough for how young she is.
  • The Ditherer: Gülie can never make up his mind or actually act in any way because he's never sure of the right thing to do. Literally anything he could do would be better than sitting around like he does, but he can't make himself work against Sariel's plans or even pay proper attention to what's going on. Shiraori privately calls him 'loser'note  and he agrees with her on that at least.
  • Dragons Are Divine: Gülie is a True Dragon — divine beings that the Dragons of the system are modelled after. He takes the form of a Draconic Humanoid clad in black armor resembling a dragon's scutes.
  • Failure Knight: Gülie views himself as this due to his failure to make decisive decisions when necessary. There are several points where his indecision led to the worst possible outcome, but the one that haunts him the most is probably when Sariel decided to protect humanity from the dragons despite the fact that human overuse of MA energy was dooming the planet. Gülie could have chosen to support her or delay her; either choice probably would have saved both her and the planet. Instead, he did nothing, leading to a catastrophe.
  • Genre Savvy: Long, long after Gülie sat down to drink with Kumoko, we finally see more of what the two were talking about. He indirectly acknowledges her as the hero or at least the protagonist of the story while he himself is just a half baked side character who does nothing but add flavor to the 'story' of the world. And Gülie has indeed done nothing in the present except exposit briefly to the likes of Ariel and Dustin.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Due to certain circumstances, including him recognizing his feelings far too late, he never got to confess to Sariel. Julius, when the party asked about Hyrince's love life, immediately stopped them from asking after seeing the latter's expression of sorrow and regret.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Gülie failed to realize that D is a lying liar who lies, helping pave the way for the planet to becoming her toy. He's also quite poor at reading Shiraori, but at least in this case nobody seems to be able to get a good read on her.
  • Love at First Punch: After being defeated by Sariel in their first meeting, Gulie was curious on her abilities and eventually fell for her.
  • Minor Major Character: Gülie, the only active god of the world the story takes place in, is the Administrator for the System and oversees the world as a whole. However, as Kumoko puts it, he's just a loser that never does anything, which he admits himself.
Gülie: If there exists those who are called heroes or protagonists, who go against the flow, who enforce their own will, who change the way the world is, then when all's said and done I would be called a minor character who adds some flavor to the story.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Dragons are assholes, but upon seeing the fundamental assumption that they are the hottest shits around shattered first by Sariel's overwhelming relative power and then her compassion, Gülie grows increasingly distant from them and was the only true dragon to stay behind when the others swiped the planet's energy stockpile and booked it.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: He's the most powerful character to take direct action in the main story, but he's described as being a lower class god hovering somewhere around being mid level but not quite there yet.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Although large amounts of Kumoko's time is spent worrying about him and planning for potential confrontations with him, Gülie is actually extremely reasonable; although she's terrified of what he'll do on their second encounter, he mostly just asks her not to kill everyone, and, when she refuses to agree, he proceeds to... get drunk with her in an effort to befriend her. If anything, his reasonableness is a symptom of his fatal character flaw, since he's indecisive and unwilling to make difficult decisions.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are almost glowing red and give him an eerie appearance coupled with his black skin and 'armor.' However, he's actually reasonably heroic.
  • Skilled, but Naive: He has a lot of raw power relative to the other main actors, but no meaningful combat experience. As a result, he's completely unable to deal with Shiraori's much greater fighting experience.
  • Tragic Dream: Gülie wants to carry out the wishes of the Goddess to protect the people of the world. He failed to appreciate how his approach allowed the System to degrade to near complete collapse.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Gülie in combat seems to rely entirely on physical attacks and his antimagic barrier. While a potent combo, it does indicate a certain lack of flexibility: With no ranged attacks worth mentioning, once Shiraori manages to gain some distance from him there's not really much he can do to catch her. When he tries to teleport up to her, he gets hit with Tele-Frag and takes some serious damage. The reason he has no skill to back up his power is because dragons are supposed to learn from their elders, but he had to develop his strength on his own.

    Sariel

Sariel

Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue (Japanese) Foreign VAs

Sariel is an angel, a type of battle goddess that serve to protect planets and their mortal inhabitants. She is known as the Goddess in the Sariera region and is the true voice of the Word of God Religion. She is a being of overwhelming compassion towards humanity, but generally stayed in the background unless there was an outside threat.

  • All-Loving Hero: The Goddess Sariel would save every being if it were possible. Ariel and Güliedistodiez have tried to respect that dream despite their own discontent over it and the very real fact that it has allowed significant problems to develop.
  • Broken Pedestal: Ariel knows about Sariel protecting the Hero System, effectively abandoning her despite centuries of loyalty. Her biting comments soon after are a clear sign she has lost a lot of respect and ordering Shiraori to not explain what happened is her way of preserving what little remains.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Sariel is hardwired to save lives and has no regard for her own well-being. Unfortunately she also prioritizes saving people in the short-term over the world in the long-term.
  • The Ditz: Due to her upbringing, she would sometimes get scolded by the director of the orphanage by doing dumb stuff like showing adult videos to the kids to provide them with sexual education.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: When the Dragons declared war on the Humans due to them abusing the MA energy, Sariel threatens Gülie on making actions that will break their friendship.
  • Enemy Mine: She does not agree with Shiraori and Ariel's plan at all, but when Shiraori presents a method to dismantle the System without getting anyone else killed, she accepts and lets them execute it.
  • God Is Good: The Goddess was very kind-hearted and sacrificed herself to the System in order to protect the world. Gülie loves her and wants to carry out her dreams, coming off as reasonable and kind when talking to Kumoko. Kumoko notes that it's this very goodness that's responsible for most of the world being dead; In fact, her desire to save as many people as possible has only slowed down the process of healing the world and let the worst of the world abuse the System, requiring even more people having to die now than ever would have had to die in the past.
  • Good Is Dumb: Shiraori and Ariel firmly believe that Sariel is foolish to the point of insanity. Notably, Sariel's refusal to guide humans more directly for fear of causing minor damage put the world at risk and her inability to allow even short term suffering is keeping Shiraori from being able to fix things, meaning far more people have to die as compensation. Ariel at least loves Sariel, but as she's nearing the end of her life has chosen to ignore what Sariel wants and do something that actually makes sense.
Ariel: Say, between bottomless kindness, and bottomless stupidity, don’t you think there’s a paper-thin difference?
  • Immortal Immaturity: Sariel has a very simplistic view of the world which has not changed at all over time, where mortals are to be protected and gods protected against. She wants to protect all mortals from being hurt but can't adjust whenever the situation becomes more complicated, constantly repeating the same mistake of saving people now despite it killing more later. Foddway considered her to have the mental and emotional maturity of an infant.
  • Martial Pacifist: Sariel will not harm any being that is one of her charges, but she will kill any god that threatens them without hesitation.
  • Meaningful Name: Sariel is the name of the angel of death that looks after human souls and prevent them from sinning, the same way that the Goddess Sariel look after the soul recycling system and try to prevent everyone from killing (prevent them for sinning).
  • Mercury's Wings: She has small wings coming out from both sides of her head.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Sariel was the most powerful god on the planet, but there are many stronger gods elsewhere. Gülie, having never met those gods, was stunned by her seemingly overwhelming power.
  • Pacifism Backfire: Her great love for mortals was a large contributing factor in the destruction of the previous advanced civilization as she could not bear to stop them forcefully. Since then, her love has continued to be an issue as she tries to limit the conflict that's needed to power the System and repair the planet. Even in the present, she's arguably causing more problems by sabotaging Shiraori's plans, which will have an immediate high body count but will prevent more damage in the future.
  • Reckless Pacifist: Sariel wants to save as many people as she can in the immediate time and has sacrificed her remaining lifespan to do so, paying no heed to the future costs that arise from her actions. Shiraori finds her mentality disgusting and blames her for letting things get as bad as they are. And then Sariel interferes in Shiraori's plan to save lives, forcing Shiraori to kill people she'd planned to spare.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: When D offered the System to the world she protected, Sariel did not know enough about advanced magic to study it in detail before implementing it. She was purely combat focused after thousands of years of protecting the world.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Sariel is one of the most powerful gods in the story, capable of defeating every Dragon Gods simultaneously without breaking a sweat and is only outmatched by D and Meido, but her ideals has only her being used by humans.
  • Stupid Good: Sariel is, in fact, one of the parties most responsible for the current mess because she can't bear to allow any sacrifices, even if they're clearly going to prevent further damage down the line. Nor is she willing to stop people from being stupid. Or anything useful.
  • Un-person: Dustin has spent several lifetimes erasing all knowledge of Sariel's existence, with the Goddess religion and the goblins being some of the last holdouts.
  • Winged Humanoid: She has a pair of feathered wings coming out of her waist.

    Meido

Meido "The Maid"

A god with no name given in the story proper, though D and the novel refer to her as 冥土 / Meido in the Loose Canon Q&A sections. Despite being dressed as a maid, she works with D as an overseer of the netherworld and in many ways can be seen as D's boss. Meido is by far the strongest god in the novel, significantly above even D, having focused so much on combat over her life she has little ability in any other field. This also causes her to regularly track D down and force her to do her actual job. She has only a single scene in the main story, but appears regularly in the Q&A sections.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: She might be the biggest fish around: Even D doesn't seem to have a chance of fighting her off or escaping her once she accidentally reveals herself.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She finds D's actions rather distasteful but doesn't seem inclined to do anything about them.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: D sarcastically rebuts Meido when the latter mentions of the strongest dragon that No-Sell all kinds of attack and downright calling it a cheat ability. Meido is annoyed by this and shuts up D, though it implies that Meido's existence herself is a cheat.
  • Ninja Maid: The Maid is perhaps the most powerful combat god in existence and at one point killed off most of the Angels around the world the story takes place in. She's not actually a maid, she just dresses like one as a hobby. She's so good at killing her presence that unless you keep her directly in line of sight and focus on keeping your attention on her, it's basically impossible to even notice her.
  • No Name Given: She's never addressed by any name in the main story, so we only have what Shiraori calls her based on how she dresses: "The Maid". That having been said, D and the novel both refer to her as "Meido / 冥土" in the Loose Canon "Teach Us, D-Sensei!" supplemental chapters.
  • The Nondescript: Unless you are seriously concentrating on her, you'll completely fail to notice that she's even there or even lose track of her altogether after noticing her once. Shiraori has no clue how she does it.
  • Punny Name: In the Loose Canon Q&A sections with her and D, she's called "Meido / 冥土", a Japanese word for The Underworld, implying both D and Meido are death gods. It also happens to be a homonym for 'maid' in Japanese, which is how she dresses.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: The Maid is the most powerful combat-type god known, but as a result is mediocre at best with other skills. She's quite insistent that this doesn't mean she's incapable of them, even if her subordinates are very insistent she not try.

Other Characters

    Earth Dragon Araba

Earth Dragon Araba

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/earth_dragon_araba.png

A powerful wolf-like dragon that lives in the lower layer of the Great Elro Labyrinth, wandering around its vast open caverns spreading fear and awe alike. He is responsible for traumatizing Kumoko twice with his sheer unmatched strength.

  • Breath Weapon: Araba can fire energy beams from his jaws powerful enough to blast massive furrows through stone and vaporize a level 25 Elro Baradish with a broad array of defensive and recovery skills.
  • Death Seeker: In the web novel, Kumoko believes that Araba gracefully accepted his defeat because he was tired of living in such a terrible world. In the light novel, she thinks he gave up because he believes death has no meaning in such a world; he will simply reincarnate here again anyway.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Araba is very proficient with earth magic, capable of conjuring and manipulating stone spears that can pierce through the toughest defenses. It is for that reason Kumoko chooses to fight him while in mid-air so she can dodge them more easily.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After Kumoko gains the upper hand in their battle using Sloth, Araba stops fighting and calmly deactivates his defensive abilities, immolating himself with his own Wreathed in Flames ability and letting Kumoko vaporize him with her Evil Eyes. To Kumoko's aggravation, while she wins the fight she finds the victory hollow and unsatisfying. This attitude latter on causes Kumoko to reflect heavily on what she considers of her own life philosophy about pride.
  • Graceful Loser: After being rendered incapable of movement, Araba accepts defeat with good grace, removing his various empowering abilities so Kumoko can kill him easily. Kumoko is furious as this sours her victory and says bad things about she herself in contrast as she lacks that grace. It's implied that she may have respected his grace, however, because she turned the dragon to dust rather than kill and eat him like she normally does.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard: Araba spared Kumoko despite directly sighting her in their first encounter, and it's not entirely clear why besides the basic idea that she was so low beneath him on threat level that he simply didn't find it worth the effort after previously nuking several other monsters in seconds. Kumoko ends up gaining the skills and capability to defeat him down the line.
  • Incendiary Exponent: In the web novel, Araba sets the ground on fire to burn the webs binding him. In the light novel, manga and anime, he sets himself on fire because he's being held in midair and then attacks Kumoko.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Araba has very well balanced offensive and defensive stats, including numerous flexible methods of attack and defenses that are still very tough to get through without an overwhelming martial advantage. This also makes him one of the strongest monsters in Elro Labyrith, able to Curb-Stomp Battle other powerful creatures with little effort on his part; and during his fight with Kumoko, the dragon spends his massive stockpile of skill points to become even more powerful.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Araba is as fast as Kumoko, is largely immune to status effects, has high regeneration and powerful anti-magic. On top of that, he's a physical bruiser and has excellent control of the environment around him. For a speed/magic specialist like Kumoko that relies on status effects, evasion and whittling the enemy down, he's more or less her worst nightmare. Then he spends all of his skill points to gain fire-based skills and even more resistances during the middle of the battle.
  • Playing with Fire: Once Kumoko starts gaining the upper hand, Araba spends his massive stockpile of skill points on a slew of powerful abilities — many of which are fire-based. In the manga and anime, Kumoko complains that he has more fire-based abilities than the fire dragon did.
  • The Quiet One: Araba never speaks a word to Kumoko, even though other dragons show that he should also be capable of doing so.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Araba has had the fewest interactions with Kumoko of any character that wasn't a one shot, but the impact stretched even beyond the laters apotheosis. He was the biggest challenge for Kumoko to leave the Labyrinth and he was the one who taught her the true meaning of pride.
  • Worthy Opponent: Araba is one of the first traumatic experiences for Kumoko thanks to how overwhelmingly powerful he is compared to her. When she defeats him after a long, drawn out battle, he gives up graciously and satisfied with his ending after doing everything in his power to win. Kumoko is kind of annoyed, but is implied to feel a certain amount of respect in return when she vaporizes Araba with her Rot Evil Eye because he is the first and only defeated opponent she has no desire to eat. The only other person she's killed with a Rot attack was Julius, which was explicitly a mercy kill because his death was nothing personal.

    Fire Dragon Rend

Fire Dragon Rend

The fire dragon guarding the middle layer of Elro Labyrinth. When the Queen Taratect comes to the middle layer, Rend confronts her with an army of wyrms and is promptly blasted by her darkness breath, leaving it severely injured. Compelled by the Queen Taratect's hatred of dragons, Kumoko engages Rend in battle and slays it.

  • Breath Weapon: It can shoot immensely powerful fireballs and torrents of flame from its jaws.
  • Incendiary Exponent: Rend is able to wreathe itself in an aura of flames hotter than the magma it calls home, inflicting Infernal Retaliation on any opponent that tries to engage it in melee combat.
  • It Can Think: In the anime, Kumoko assumes Rend is a mere beast like the other fire wyrms, and is shocked to see it is a cunning strategist capable of improvisation. When trying her go-to Feed It a Bomb strategy, she's shocked when Rend point-blank blasts her extra-strength poison orb with a fireball.
  • Jagged Mouth: In the manga it is depicted as having fangs set directly into its jaws, giving its mouth a serrated appearance.
  • Monster Lord: Rend rules over the fire wyrms in the middle layer of Elro Labyrinth, directing and co-ordinating them with his Command skill.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The light novel — and by extension the anime — don't give it a name, just calling it a "Fire Dragon". The manga identifies it — or at least its "species" — as "Rend".
  • Not Zilla: The manga's rendition of him depicts him as a bipedal reptilian kaiju rather than a traditional European dragon like in the light novel and anime.
  • Off with His Head!: Kumoko decapitates Rend with her Rot abilities, and almost ends up dying in the process of doing so due to the backlash it inflicts on her body.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: In the light novel and anime, the Fire Dragon resembles a typical Northern European dragon — possessing a long body, golden scales, batlike wings, and horns. In the manga, Rend has a goblin shark-like snout, a bipedal body structure, and shoulder spikes instead of wings — making him resemble a kaiju more than a typical dragon.
  • Tail Slap: In the manga, Rend strategically smashes the rocks Kumoko hops onto with its tail, eventually cornering her in the middle of a sea of magma.
  • You Don't Look Like You: In the light novel and anime, Rend is depicted as being a more-or-less classical dragon with horns and wings. In the manga, it instead has massive shoulder spikes and a pointed snout somewhat resembling a goblin shark's.
  • Worf Had the Flu: In the web novel it just straight up loses to Kumoko. Since this strains credibility, in the light novel and manga, Rend was heavily wounded after being attacked by Mother before the fight with Kumoko began. The anime skips its "fight" with the Queen Taratect, showing it severely injured and severely pissed off, but offering no explanation as to why.

    Dragons
The dragons are the minions of Güliedistodiez and are set to oversee certain areas of the world by his command. They seem to be largely left to their own devices in their mission and are viewed as normal monster by the populace, albeit extremely powerful ones. The most prominent among them is earth dragon Araba, who nearly killed Kumoko on several occasions almost absentmindedly.

The oceans are impassible due to the large number of water dragons inhabiting them. A fire dragon guards the middle layer of the Elro Labyrinth, and there are also four earth dragons in the lower layer of the Elro Labyrinth and nine at the bottom. An ice dragon guards the mystic mountains and a fair number are to be found elsewhere around the world. To Gülie's annoyance, humans consider them evil and attack them often, though often to no avail.
  • Anti-Magic: Dragons possess a passive ability to smother the effect of magic not cast by them in their general viccinity. The stronger dragons are nigh immune to most forms of magic as a result, and this is before you factor in their elemental resistances. However, there is one glaring weakness to this ability, and that is that it is completely ineffective against magecraft since that is a power that exists outside of the System.
  • Arch-Enemy: While Ariel and Gülie don't interfere with each other directly, their subordinates hate each other. Mother at one point blasts what is presumably a drake or dragon in the middle layer (the fire dragon Rend in the light novel and manga) without any provocation while Araba and Kagna destroy any webs they see on sight, though they dismiss Kumoko herself when she only hides or flees.
  • Ascended Extra: In the web novel, after Araba dragons take a back seat in the plot until the climax of the conflict between Dustin and Ariel. In the light novel plot, however, they take a more active role against Potimas' forces and play a larger role in events like Wrath crossing the mountains. Ice Dragon Nia migrates back into the web novel later as well.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: The story hypes up dark element dragons because when the rest of the dragons were all deciding to specialize in their elements, the dark dragon's leader didn't really have a clear idea on what to do and decided to focus on Heresy Magic. This makes them the only dragons that could pose an actual threat to higher levels beings like gods, but also means they specialized in a magic type that is otherwise mostly a support skill. Apart from the Heresy Magic, he mostly just seems to be proficient in hand to hand combat.
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: Or rather, dragons are dinosaurs. The Earth Wyrm Fenegrads and Earth Dragon Ekisa are bipedal dragons with small forearms, giving them a strong semblance to a T. rex.
  • The Ditz: The wind and lightning dragons that face off against Wrath never realize that one could have stalled him while the other assassinates Ariel. He assumes they must be too noble for such a strategy but the author's afterword makes it clear.
  • Fragile Speedster
    • Lightning dragons are difficult to deal with as the fastest dragons while also having potent offensive capabilities. The tradeoff is they don't develop their defenses, so if the opponent can weather their blows they'll quickly run out of mana. A single good hit is also enough to defeat them.
    • Relative to other earth dragons, Geere has only so so defenses and high speed, which Kumoko found troublesome to deal with. It didn't help that he was accompanied by a slow defense specialist either, who was also annoying to face.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Unlike earth dragons, the ice dragon is willing to flee a losing engagement. Once Wrath tears it a new one it escapes to inform Gülie that the country of interstice is not safe.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Dark element dragons are considered to be likely the nastiest possible opponents, but the story takes a long time to explain why: Lacking any better idea of what to do, the top dark dragon decided to specialize in Heresy Magic, meaning he is quite capable of using attacks imbued with Soul Breaking.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: They're definitely recognizable as dragons when reaching adulthood, but also have other animal traits mixed in. Araba, for example, looks like a wolf while the fire dragons tend to look like eels. It's all but stated that they're the results of Potimas' immortality experiments where he mixed true dragon DNA with that of normal animals to make a kind of hybrid.
  • No-Sell: As dragons get stronger they get increasingly powerful anti-magic.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The species name for Araba is actually Earth Dragon Araba and in the light novel he has a generic monster listing just like the other monsters, indicating that this is not actually his name. Names have their own listing separate from species, but this doesn't show up for the dragons. So Kagna, Geere and so on are just their species name, which is something Kumoko speculates about early on. It is also possible that every dragon is a unique species with their name and species being one and the same.
  • Personality Powers: The dragons of certain elements seem to have similar personalities. Earth dragons are noted to be fearless 'fight well and die with honor' types and don't speak much. Not a single one ever speaks to Kumoko. Fire dragons tend to be aggressive and seemingly moody. Lightning dragons are the least territorial, meaning they tend to cause a lot of problems. They're also rash and overly confident.
  • Seahorses Are Dragons: The Elro Gunerush — low-level fire wyrms of the Great Elro Labyrinth — resemble seahorses and are capable of swimming in molten rock.
  • Stone Wall: Kagna is basically a walking fortress, but has relatively unimpressive offensive capabilities and is quite slow for a dragon.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The ninth army is made up of shapeshifted dragons. They reveal their true strength when Gülie has finally had enough of Shiraori.
  • We Win, Because You Didn't: Gyurie's strongest dragon underling is a water type dragon who begins invading the Elro Labyrinth near the end, briefly being stalled by the Remnants before coming across Sophia and realizing she just straight up can't beat a mere teenage vampire. Sophia is more powerful and has an elemental advantage because ice > water. Instead, she opts to waste Sophia's time to keep her from aiding Shiro. Sophia indeed does not arrive in time to help Shiraori, a contributing factor in her terribly Pyrrhic Victory.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Wrath trashed the ice dragon because it had terrible affinity with him: Dragons have anti-magic barriers, but the System doesn't register physical strengthening as magic and he doesn't actually use his magic skills for direct attacks. Plus, his affinities are fire and lightning, meaning it had a pretty bad elemental affinity disadvantage.

    Mother

Queen Taratect/Mother

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/queen_taratec.png
The Queen Taratect living inside the Great Elroe Labyrinth. She is the final evolution of the Taratect line and gave birth to Kumoko and her 'siblings' via the Egg-Laying skill. Kumoko considers her final boss material and considers her early appearance unfair and a sign of bad game balance. Please fix it, developers.
  • Adaptational Badass: In the web novel she's only defeated indirectly and with no chance to retaliate. In the light novel and manga, she and her subordinates get their own arc as they try to hunt Kumoko down. She also puts up a more active resistance to Kumoko's soul fragments devouring her soul and is shown to be much more intelligent and strong willed than in the web novel, where she's basically just a giant computer. Smart, but with no ego worth noting.
  • Breath Weapon: As a result of having killed dragons before she can launch her own breath attacks. Since they aren't naturally acquired they aren't as powerful as one a dragon of the same level would use, but since she's got stats five times that of Araba it hardly matters. A single blast wipes out the fire dragon Rend's army of wyrms, and rips a massive crater from the bottom layer of Elro Labyrinth to the surface.
  • Did Not Think This Through: She did not think to take into account that Kumoko had both developed [Heresy Nullification] and [Ruler of Pride] and had evolved into a species that was on the same Tier of the Taratect race as her. Even one of these things should have tipped her off that it would be a smarter idea to leave the thing alone. She did not live long enough to regret her choices.
  • Entitled to Have You: The Queen Taractect initially felt little interest in Kumoko once she left the nest. However, once the hatchling managed to escape the Great Elroe Labyrinth; Mother commanded Kumoko to return using her Kin Control Skill. However, due to Kumoko having Heresy Nullification, this negates Kin Control, forcing Mother to send out a small army of her other children from the Labyrinth with the express goal of either forcing Kumoko back into the labyrinth or to kill her.
  • Giant Spider: Mother and the other Queen Taratects are colossal, towering over trees and even being larger than the fire-dragon Rend.
  • Glorified Sperm Donor: Gender inverted, but the basic principal remains. Kumoko calls her Mother but has absolutely no familial feelings given how Taratects reproduce. She simply goes up to the upper layer, lays some eggs, leaves and then comes back when they hatch. Then she weeds out the slow and stupid ones that don't make for the exit.
  • Gone Horribly Right: She can control her Taratect offspring, but when it comes to anything below a certain strength she just motivates them to get stronger quickly. This is why Kumoko is a munchkin: Mother is influencing her to pursue power. Unfortunately for her, when there's a choice between another Taratect form and a different type of spider monster, Kumoko judges the latter to have more potential and evolves into it and outside of Mother's control. Now there's a deadly rogue spider monster running around doing as it pleases. She even eats Mother herself eventually and, in the light novel, wipes out the Elro labyrinth Taratect army.
  • It Can Think: To Kumoko's surprise, the Queen is actually quite intelligent and even understands human speech. Though there is little indication the Queens would ever actually bother to listen to anything someone had to say to them.
  • Kaiju: She's a giant spider monster generally referred to as a kaiju.
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: She eats her own children, specifically those too stupid or slow to flee after hatching.
  • One Bad Mother: One of the most persistent threats to Kumoko's life who also happens to be her biological mother, she is simply referred to as "Mother".
  • Strong and Skilled: In the light novel and manga, not only is she extremely powerful, but even when fighting at a mere fraction of her ability she's still a very clever opponent. Anything Kumoko can do, she can do better from threads to poison to traps.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Kumoko's parallel minds devouring her soul reduced her stats to less than a quarter of their maximum, to the point where Kumoko's own stats were higher. Despite this, Mother's combat experience and vast array of skills trumped Kumoko's own, enabling her to lure her wayward daughter into a trap and easily gain the upper hand.

    Potimas Harrifenas (Unmarked Spoilers

Potimas Harrifenas

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Japanese) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/potimas_anime.png

Potimas is the leader of the elves and the father, at least biologically, of Filimøs AKA Oka-chan. He and his elves live in an isolated forest protected by an impenetrable barrier which can only be passed through with the aid of special transfer gates. The elves pursue peace at all cost and are currently sheltering the majority of the reincarnators. They are at odds with the demons, the Word of God religion and even the Administrators apart from "D", who has a hands off policy.

Potimas himself is a cold man who acts only through proxies, which are disposed of at the first sign of trouble at no cost to himself.

  • Actually a Doombot: Whenever Potimas shows up outside the elf village, it's actually a Type A Gloria cyborg he's remotely controlling in the light novel or an elf minion that he possessed. Kumoko compares one of his android bodies to the Terminator in the manga after ripping half of its face off.
  • Ass Shove: In volume 7, Kumoko, using her sharp spider leg, drills a hole into Potimas's cyborg butt as revenge to his attempted assassination earlier in the volume. This earns Hyuvan's fear and respect, Ariel's laughter and Potimas's ire towards Kumoko.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: A curious case in that while he's directly the main originator of the world's current problems, as well as a major reason for other characters' misery both past and present, he's ultimately not powerful or competent enough to be more than the Disc-One Final Boss. The only reason he's survived this long is that D forbid Gülie from killing him.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Even when he's nominally allied with Kumoko and Ariel to stop the G-Fleet from destroying the planet, Potimas can't help but double-cross them at the earliest available opportunity — giving Kumoko a bazooka that explodes in her face, almost killing her. While annoyed that she survived, he tables revenge due to Ariel's presence... at least until he gains contol of the prototype Gloria mech containing the GMA bomb, whereupon he sets up an anti-magic barrier, attempts to shoot Kumoko in the back (Ariel takes the bullet), and tries use the mech to finish both her and Ariel off.
  • Demonic Possession: The only reason he's ever "seen" outside the elf village is because he can take over the bodies of those infected with pieces of his soul and move them around. Whether the bodies live or die is of no consequence since they aren't his real body.
  • Enemy Mine: When the G-Fleet activates, Potimas approaches Kumoko, Ariel, Pontiff Dustin, and Güliedistodiez and proposes a temporary alliance in order to stop it from destroying the world, stating that — while he designed it on a whim and sold said designs to finance his other experiments — even he wasn't insane enough to actually build it. Kumoko rightly doesn't believe or trust him, and he promptly tries to assassinate her with a self-destructing bazooka to get revenge for her having stopped him from killing Sophia. Kumoko pays him back with a scythe-leg Ass Shove, further humiliating him by joking that she took his anal virginity, which causes him to swear to kill her as slowly and painfully as possible. He later reveals that his Enemy Mine proposal was a ploy to trick them into helping him gain control of the G-Fleet and GMA bomb, but is thwarted by Kumoko.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: He believed Ariel sent the spider monster to protect Sophia from him. However, Kumoko was protecting Sophia on a whim and Ariel actually wanted to kill her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Subverted. He claims that he's shocked and horrified that someone would be stupid and/or insane enough to actually build the G-Fleet, an anti-dragon superweapon he designed with the capability of destroying the entire planet, but Kumoko gets the feeling that he's lying. She's more or less proven correct when he repeatedly tries to kill her and Ariel, admitting to their faces that he wanted to seize the G-Fleet and GMA bomb for himself after being defeated.
  • Evil Genius: He's perhaps the most brilliant man who ever lived with worldwide renown by the age of 20. However, his experiments to gain immortality were incredibly cruel and inhumane. In fact, he's the primary reason for the world being almost entirely destroyed. In the present, he has a massive army of powerful robots and plans to blend up the souls of the reincarnators to see if he can use them to become a god. He doesn't think it'll work but hey, worth a shot.
  • Evilutionary Biologist: He performed a wide variety of experiments in order to find a method of extending his own life, eventually using MA energy to forcibly evolve himself into an elf. His experiments are also the source of the demons, vampires and at least some of the monsters roaming the planet.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Even before he's revealed to be a villain, he makes people uncomfortable because he's only superficially polite at best and obviously very condescending.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Appears to look down on Half-Elves.
  • Hate Sink: Whereas most of the major players in the setting either have sympathetic motives or sympathetic backstories, Potimas is simply despicable. He is the one primarily responsible for the awful state the world is in, and rather than try to fix it like the other survivors from that era, his goal is to make things even worse in hopes that he can become more powerful in the process.
  • Hero Killer: Killed the reincarnation of Issei, Natsume's best friend and Morality Chain; his positive influence would likely have prevented Hugo from becoming a depraved madman.
  • Immortality Seeker: From a young age, he desperately sought any way to escape death, ultimately setting in motion the destruction of the world. Ironically, if he weren't completely self-centered he could've achieved immortality centuries ago, before he caused the world's ruin. His daughter Ariel has exactly the kind of immortal body he always wanted, but he discarded her because she was being killed by her own poison. Had he bothered to repair that flaw, he would've noticed her immortality and been able to modify his own body in the same way.
  • It's All About Me: Potimas's failed attempt to become a god disrupted the balance and made the world even more crapsack than it already was. Despite this, he's still trying to attain complete control of the world.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Potimas' pragmatism means that unless he believes his chances of victory are certain he's willing to table revenge to accomplish his goals, such as working alongside his nemeses Ariel, Kumoko, Güliedistodiez, and Pontiff Dustin to stop the G-Fleet from destroying the world. Potimas' ulterior motive is seizing control of it and using it to wipe out all his enemies in one fell swoop, but when Kumoko reduces him to a severed head he nonchalantly admits defeat and agrees to go along with the initial plan.
  • Logical Weakness: Due to being a scientist, Potimas is actually weak in physical combat, letting Ariel casually Curb-Stomp Battle him in volume 5. He makes up for it with his cyborg Glora A bodies being extremely strong and durable, though Ariel is still able to scrap them with a single blow.
  • The Maker: He's the source of the elves, demons, the non-deity dragons, goblins and a few other monster species.
  • No One Could Survive That!: In volume 10, Potimas laughs in satisfaction when he thinks he killed Shiraori due to a meteor despite the fact that the latter herself summoned it and also has revival.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: He studied every science from a young age in pursuit of immortality and by 20 was already famous for discoveries in multiple fields. He then went on to develop an entirely new field of science centering around Magitek.
  • Parasitic Immortality: One of the reasons Shiraori planned the rebellion and the Elf Genocide led by Hugo was due to Potimas's Ruler of Diligence ability, which allows him to survive even when his main body is killed as long as a piece of his soul is in his proxies, in which all of the elves and the King of Analeit are contaminated with.
  • Power Nullifier: Due to Potimas's knowledge in the ancient civilization and the Dragons, he's capable of using Anti-Magic barriers that nullify most of the System's magic. During his first encounter with Kumoko, whose evolved into an Arachne and is basically the second most powerful being in the System after Ariel, the latter had a hard time dealing with Potimas due to him cancelling almost all of her magic, even her powerful regeneration ability and Born-Again Immortality, and had to be rescued by Ariel, who casually destroys Potimas via physical combat.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Various characters in the series, mostly Ariel and D, have commented that Potimas is like a child chasing such a unattainable pipe dream of Immortality.
  • Smug Snake: Potimas is considered something of an obnoxious small fry because while he's caused a lot of problems up to and including the disaster that necessitated implementing the System to stop the planet's death, this is mostly just because he's never had to face a genuine adversary before.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
  • We Have Reserves: Potimas views his fellow elves as completely expendible and disposable, especially since he can always make more by mutating humans. Their only real utility to him is as backup bodies he can upload his consciousness into using his Ruler of Diligence skill.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: One of Potimas's plans after gathering most of the reincarnations was actually him disposing of Oka as he has no further use of her.

    Foddway

Foddway

An elderly man who knew Sariel and Gülie before the System was implemented who helped give Gülie some perspective on how people other than dragons thing and what 'winning' actually means. He was very clever and fiercely devoted to her.

  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Though opposed to Potimas and an ally of Sariel, he was eventually infected with vampirism and ended up becoming the first and most terrible Demon Lord.
  • Cool Old Guy: A literal god bursts into the scene angrily demanding to see someone? Foddway just shoos him away and denies him an audience until the god can beat him at a game of his choice. With Gülie's pride on the line he realizes he can't just kill Foddway or that would mean the old man was the true victor. Physical violence would mean Gülie lost the argument.
  • Evil Overlord: He was the first demon king as well as the original Lord of Pride. In fact, before him, the title of demon king did not even exist. Instead, he rose up, a hero happened to rise up to defeat him and D thought the whole thing was cool and built it into the System.
  • Face–Heel Turn: He went from an ardent support of Sariel to becoming the first Demon Lord, which isn't explained for hundreds of chapters when we learn from his perspective he didn't change sides at all. Best way to get Sariel out of her stupid sacrifice? Kill all the humans.
  • Humans Are Bastards: He basically saw the System as being Powered by a Forsaken Child and decided if this is what it took for humanity to go on existing, it was better if they all died.
  • Monster Progenitor: He was the first intelligent vampire and is implied to have fathered a good many more before finally being defeated. As his kin, they would have been bound to serve him. Vampires died out long ago, however.
  • Posthumous Character: He's been dead for thousands of years.
  • Pride: The first ruler of pride in the system, as he refused to have Sariel, who he saw as more or less having the mind and emotional maturity of an infant, pay the price for humanity's mistakes. Even if it meant wiping all of humanity out with his own hands.
  • Psycho Supporter: Hinted. While he was devoted to Sariel, it's indicated he was a pretty shady guy overall.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: Foddway, the original demon king. A bit odd sounding, but that's it. Of course, he was basically an ordinary person before everything went wrong.
  • Yandere: Decided that it would be in Sariel's best interests to destroy every sentient being on the planet.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Vampire style. Unlike most vampires, he made full use of the exponential growth rate for vampires to create a massive slave army in his attempt to wipe out humanity in order to free Sariel. As such, while he is called the first Demon King, his methods and goals are actually very different from his successors. The original demons would have also opposed him, after all. As a result of this strategy, everyone made damn sure to wipe out the vampire species.

    Elroe Baladorado

Elroe Baladorado

Elroe Baladorado is a giant snake who represents the first truly challenging enemy for Kumoko.

  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: In the Upper Stratum, the Baladorado is one of the strongest enemies that Kumoko has to face, to the point that she only wins due to a combination of skill and luck. When Kumoko accidentally falls into the Lower Stratum, the same snakes are treated as standard mobs.

The "children" of Kumoko, these spider monsters are considered among the most dangerous monsters in the world.

  • Always a Bigger Fish: They are this to Taratects, being just as strong as Arch Taratects but also smarter, with better skills, teamwork and a higher survival rate to maturity. It is to the point that other spider monsters will follow their orders if they give them.
  • The Dreaded: Just like their mother, there are horror tales spoken about them, for good reason.
  • It Can Think: They are not only intelligent, but sapient and able to speak via telepathy. This unnerves anyone who hears them, especially because they don't seem to think like a human.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Like their mother, they are fast, strong, tough, proficient in magic and able to think strategically.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: Don't attack them or burn their webs and they will leave you alone. There's an exception in the light novel, however, in that they seem to be hostile towards Julius specifically.
  • One-Man Army: Horrifyingly enough, these things are capable of challenging the greatest heroes of humanity solo. This makes it a particular case of Nightmare Fuel since they are pack hunters.
