To-do list:
- Love You and Everybody was merged with Bait-and-Switch Sentiment. Examples fitting the original definition should be moved to the latter, but due to misuse in place of All-Loving Hero, some examples may need to be moved to that trope instead. Move wicks to Bait-and-Switch Sentiment if it fits the original definition, or All-Loving Hero if it's misused in place of the latter.
A while ago I tried to do a TRS for this trope despite not understanding how to do one. However coming back to the trope reveals the same problem.
Love You and Everybody is non-stock phrase way of saying "I love you and everyone", the "everyone" part being an attempt to backpedal from a declaration of love. The problem is that the trope is often a generic reference to loving everyone, often All-Loving Hero. The wick check will show that they're far more "loving everyone" examples then correct examples.
I think something like Platonic Love Backpedal would be a good rename.

2.Characters.CLAMP School Detectives

- One True Threesome:
- Thanks to Hikaru's Love You and Everybody and Eagle and Lantis' preinstalled Ho Yay, they're also a popular threesome.
%%* Love You and Everybody - Ijima Kotone.
6.Academy of Merlin: Graduated Ekaterina
%%* Love You and Everybody: Cabbage loves everyone!
- Love You and Everybody: Comes part and parcel with being a first-class goddess. She is, however, willing to make an exception for Keiichi: she will always choose him over everyone and everything else, which she explicitly says in Volume 15:
Belldandy: "If I had to choose between saving the world and saving Keiichi... I would save Keiichi."
8.Heartwarming.Xenoblade Chronicles 2
- Nia's entire character arc coming to a head in Chapter 7. Where she accepts her nature as a Blade is to protect those she loves, and declares her love for Rex. And even though Rex is being Rex, she takes it in stride.
- Love You and Everybody: Miley does this pretty frequently, usually because she's pretty open about being aromantic and doesn't expect anyone to think she's talking about anything else.
- Portfolio:
Compare the Love Confession, Love You and Everybody, Commitment Issues, Cannot Spit It Out, and The Four Loves. The recipient (or the one who'd said it, but wishes to cover up) might use I "Uh" You, Too in response.

13.Characters.Critical Role Marquet Campaign
- Love You and Everybody: When she says she "love[s] Imogen deeply," it kind of comes across this way.
14.Trivia.The Fire Never Goes Out
- What Could Have Been: One comic that ND drew for the book but ultimately wasn't included depicted the moment he confessed to Molly that he loved her (Molly misunderstood at first.) Administrivia / Weblinks Are Not Examples, also the links are dead
- Love You and Everybody: How she feels about both Iruma and Azz. As due to the two being the first friends she ever made, Clara really treasures her relationship with the two, to the point she consider them as the "Love Trio" and herself as the Big Sister of the group who is there for the other two.
- Love You and Everybody: After Shigeru asks Yuki if he loves her. She turns out to be second, after Rui and before that dog he kissed once, after which Yuki proceeds to say that Shigeru is the only human he has ever kissed.
- The "I Love You" Stigma: In "Like Father, Like Gun", Brad's attempt to get his father to say he loves him backfires when he thinks it means he's going to die. Dad then starts "dropping L-bombs" to everything except Brad.
4.I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me
- Naruto: This is the biggest reason why Naruto was unable to notice Hinata's feelings for him, in a Gender Inverted example. Naruto's depressing childhood instilled in him a lack of self-worth that he hid behind bravado and arrogance when he was younger. It didn't help that almost all of the girls in his class—including Sakura, the object of his one-sided shallow crush until Chapter 469—treated him horribly and turned their attention to Sasuke, which made Naruto think that all girls are only interested in guys like Sasuke. After Hinata confessed her love to him in the Invasion of Pain arc, Naruto was completely stunned, and even for a while afterwards, he thought she meant she loved him as a friend. It also prevented him from understanding his own feelings for her—and judging by the dialogue from the other characters in the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc and The Last: Naruto the Movie, it's heavily implied that Naruto has been in love with Hinata for a while. When he finally does understand in the movie, is when this trope is exemplified full force. This was confirmed with his Heroic Vow: he never thought someone as kind and beautiful as Hinata would genuinely love him for him. Seems backwards, as he misunderstand as opposed to be backpedaling
- Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun':
- In the same series, since Mikoto has No Social Skills, it's very hard to pin down the object of her affection (if she even has one), but given her protective nature toward the protagonist, she can best be described as Mai-sexual (pun intended).
7.Recap.Buffy The Vampire Slayer S 5 E 22 The Gift
- Love You and Everybody
Spike: Ah, when you [Buffy] say you love us all...
Xander and Giles: Shut up!
8.Literature.The Age Of Innocence
- Love You and Everybody: Newland Archer spends the first half of the novel completely oblivious to Ellen's feelings for him because she's just as cordial with him as everyone else. In a non-romantic sense, New York high society takes umbrage with Ellen being equally polite to everyone she meets, rather than showing excessive reverence for approved members of society and cold disapproval or haughty indifference to people deemed unworthy of such kindness. '''First half fits the "Doesn't know they love them because they are nice to everyone" idea, latter half fits the "loves everyone in general" category.
9.MARDEK
- Oblivious to Love: Elywen is one step short of jumping him and he still doesn't get it. Even with Emela, when Deugan asks whether he likes her, he says they're great friends.
- Love You and Everybody: A fact that is a constant source of angst for Chitsuba, whose mood swings rather wildly depending on what she thinks the "love" Victorie holds for her is.
- Oblivious to Love: Mikachin. When Bambi tries to get him to confess to Mimi, his quick response to, "Why did you pick me instead of Choco and Bambi?" turns out to be, "I love Choco and Bambi too."
- Tranquil Fury: While Kanou doesn't like to do things in half measures, he's capable of doing this. Best example is the end of the fourth chapter of volume 4: Ayase says that everyone is special to him, not only Kanou.
- In Sakana, Taisei is incredibly smart and a talented salaryman. He's also incredibly silly and childish (but well-meaning).
3.PlayingWith.No Hugging No Kissing
- Enforced:
- The author REALLY likes the idea of the Power of Friendship prevailing. So he makes the main character either asexual or platonically love everyone
- Exaggerated: Alicia is a divine Mary Sue Classic who loves everyone and is loved in turn by everyone.
- Interestingly this happens in Sabrina the Teenage Witch too, except that it's gender flipped. Sabrina cooks up a temporary date out of man dough to take her to the dance when Harvey goes with Libby. He loves Sabrina, but he also loves everything and everyone. Libby ends up dumping Harvey for him as Harvey won't dance. Interestingly, in this situation the one who isn't the "Magical (Girl/Boy)friend" in this case is the one with the magical powers. The man dough guy qualifies by not being human, and by being totally into Sabrina.
- My-HiME:
- Mikoto Minagi fits this alignment most of the time, too. Though she's quite naive, having lived a sheltered life before going to school at Fuuka, she's quick to make friends and is fiercely protective of them... especially Mai. Her childlike nature also comes with a general distrust of authority, and an unfortunate susceptibility to mind control.
7.Characters.NCIS Main Characters
- Love You and Everybody: She's a big-time hugger. She even made an apology to a tree when Tony had to dig out a bullet for evidence and got a splinter, defending it by forgiving him for "attacking" the tree.
8.Characters.Sword Art Online Video Game
- Broken Tears: Incredibly downplayed, but when the Player Character effectively expresses a case of Love You and Everybody for the whole squadron as True Companions. Itsuki suddenly has his left eye start crying, unable to hide his emotions in real life as he both realizes that the player is not only his most precious person in the world at this moment in time, but they also see him in equal light with everyone else. Which doesn't sit well with Itsuki. Minutes later, he voluntarily becomes the Big Bad.
- Love You and Everybody: She actually invokes this to explain to E-merl why she can't be in a relationship with him; her beliefs demand that she love everyone and everything equally and unconditionally. Not that she seems too happy about it.
- Love You and Everybody
Alek: What I'm really trying to say, Dylan, is that I think I'm in love... with the ship.
- Love You and Everybody: Okita very openly declares that he loves Sei... usually in the same breath that he says he loves the likes of Kondo, Hijikata, and Saito. Okita's endearingly unshy about how much he loves the people around him, but this unfortunately gives the pining Sei a lot of confusion and grief.
3.Characters.Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon Bell Cranel
- Love You and Everybody: In the anime, Hestia tries to extract a love confession out of him, only for Bell to reply that he truly loves and appreciates everyone in his familia, which is quickly reciprocated by everyone else. Even Welf.
- Love You and Everybody: Kujou's answer when Tachibana probes her on her feelings for Yanagi at the end of Chapter 17. Kujou bluntly states that she likes him, only to follow up with how she likes the rest of their college circle, too. Tachibana, on the other hand, is in disbelief that someone would say such a thing in "real life."
- I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: Tessa to Deuce in her final cafe conversation. Tessa says she loves Deuce, but Deuce is upset that she doesn't mean it romantically. Of course, she changes her mind in her ending.
6-7.Recap.Angel S 03 E 07 Offspring
- Love You and Everybody:
- Cordelia telling Angel "I love you." When a shocked Angel responds "What?", she says "Of course I love you." Then she calls out to where the others are working "Angel loves me and I love him. Don't you guys love Angel?" and Wesley, Fred, and Gunn all chime simultaneously "We love you, Angel!" Due to the skill of the actors involved, an absolute knee-slapper.
- He's trying to work up to telling her he thinks he's developed romantic feelings for her and she interrupts him with "Angel, are you trying to tell me you love me? It's ok, I love you too". He's surprised she was able to just come right out with it, but she just wants to reassure him that she knows he cares about her, turns out that five minutes earlier everyone else was saying they loved each just in case they all die in the coming apocalypse.
- League of Legends:
- Taric was intentionally designed to invoke this trope, a manly yet gentle Combat Medic known for his softspoken baritone and subdued love of flashy gems and camp, apparently having been a lead designer for a frilly musical pre-Continuity Reboot. Post-reboot (where he's since become a half-ascended, all-loving Physical God of protection), this dynamic was mostly dropped and can be answered with "He likes everyone."
2.Characters.D Gray Man Exorcists
- Love You and Everybody: Fitting, given the fact he's an All-Loving Hero.
- What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Despite his centuries of existence, he has never experienced any romantic relationship in his long life. When Mizuha asks if he likes (loves) someone, Fushi innocently declares that he loves everyone around him, proving that he understands friendship and familial love, but when it comes to romantic love, he's dense. He endeavors to learn more about it after finding that it may be the key to defeating the Nokkers of the Modern Era.
4.WesternAnimation.Unsupervised
- All-Loving Hero: Both Gary and Joel are ridiculously nice and accepting to everyone. Megan doesn't even count them as real friends as a result of their Love You and Everybody attitudes.
- From the works of Jane Austen:
- Pride and Prejudice:
- Mr. Darcy doesn't believe that Jane Bennet holds any particular feelings for Mr. Bingley, not realizing that Jane is too shy and reserved to express her love openly in a way that would stand out from how nice she already is to everyone. Because of this, and because he (not entirely inaccurately) sees Jane's mother and sisters as appalling Gold Diggers, Darcy prevents Bingley and Jane from meeting in London and encourages Bingley to break off his courtship of Jane.
- Pride and Prejudice:
- Love You and Everybody: Chiaki is very charming towards every young woman he meets, leading Maron to doubt his feelings. Little does she know he's already a Ladykiller in Love at this point.
Maron: "I see... Chiaki is kind to anybody, it's the same with any girl... Why did I think that I was the only person that was special?"
3.Headscratchers.Pride And Prejudice
- So Darcy's major reason for discouraging Bingley's courtship of Jane is a belief that Jane's affection is not sincere, due to Jane's inveterate shyness. Um, how is this Darcy's business? If he had reason to believe Jane was only chasing Charles for his money, that's reason to break them up. This is obviously not the case, so where does he get off?
- He knew Bingley well enough to realize he was honestly falling in love with Jane, but he had reason to think Jane was just being... polite. He recognized in the letter to Lizzy that Jane had many personal virtues to recommend her, but being open about her affections was not one of them. Add to that the other "disadvantages" of the match: No connections, a "silly" family, (relative) poverty, and poor relations, and Darcy had a point in not wanting his friend to marry Jane when the principal selling point (Love) is in doubt of existing. Honestly, you're right, it wasnt his business except in as much as a concerned friend should warn of a potentially loveless marriage, which he did. It's a Jerkass move and Lizzy rightly What the Hell, Hero?'s him on it, but that's the point. It's part of his ungentlemanly pride that he had not realized was a defect and later sets out to correct. That he "OK's" the match to Bingley and owns up to hiding Jane's presence in London isn't just to get in good with Lizzy, but because he realized he had done wrong by his friend.
- Meddling in others' lives for the better is an older-sibling instinct (as I sadly know from experience), and Bingley would have and should have come to the same conclusion about Jane (everyone besides the Bennets apparently did) if he wasn't so naive. In a way, Bingley's and Darcy's beliefs about Jane's feelings parallel Jane's and Elizabeth's chosen views of the world. That aside, like the above troper said, Darcy was concerned for his friend and didn't want to see him get his heart broken. If that doesn't suit you, there is the more interesting motivation that I half-not-seriously thought of when I first read the novel...
- Marry Them All: Fang-Fang Huang attempts to lure Tsukune into the Chinese Demon Mafia (no, seriously) by pointing out that this would make it a simple matter for him to marry his entire harem. With the exception of Moka, the girls make it clear that they like the idea... and Yukari tries to put him on a leash and force him to accept. And Kurumu, Ruby, and Mizore dress to fit in with the Chinese... Then Inner Moka reiterates Outer Moka's objection. Except with a great deal more violence.
- There's also the end of the anime, where Tsukune, faced with the question of "who will you end up with", tries using this in conjunction with Love You and Everybody so as not to let the other girls down, especially because they busted their humps to help him before. It only earns him a kick in the face from Inner Moka.
- Love You and Everybody: After a particularly embarrassing Val Love session with the triplets in chapter 33, Takuma blurts out that he loves them. "Them" being all nine sisters. Itsuyo, Mutsumi and Natsuki are simultaneously flustered by his bluntness, happy to hear that he likes them, and sad that he is basically confessing he still hasn't choosen one of them
In Love Triangles and more complicated situations, selecting just one suitor can prove to be a toughie. After all, the main character usually finds him/herself in this predicament because he/she likes all of the love interests to a degree and doesn't want to break anyone's heart or make anyone leave. Even if he/she likes only one in particular, there's little guarantee that the rest will be willing to accept their choice, especially in long-running harem series. This often happens when the love polygon devolves into True Companions and infatuations become close friendships instead.

Pinging ~randomtroper89.
Platonic Love Backpedal is a good idea for a rename suggestion.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportRename sounds good to me.
Vehicle-Based Characterization | Grief-Induced Split | Locker MailI felt like we had a trope similar to this one already and sure enough, there's Bait-and-Switch Sentiment and Mistaken Declaration of Love, both of which seem to capture this same thing without focusing on the exact words "I love you...and everyone".
I think it's possible to merge with either or disambig between the two and All-Loving Hero, the trope it's most getting misused for.
Edited by amathieu13 on Feb 3rd 2023 at 10:08:41 AM
I'm leaning toward disambiguating between Bait-and-Switch Sentiment, Mistaken Declaration of Love, and All-Loving Hero after what amathieu said, but if we rename, the old name can still become a disambiguation page.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I think this is conceptually close to Bait-and-Switch Sentiment and not much to Mistaken Declaration of Love, so I can entertain merging with Bait-and-Switch Sentiment.
e: Disambig is probably better.

re: being different from Mistaken Declaration of Love, looking at the description on the page (it's described as someone accidentally confessing to the wrong person) you're right, it's quite different. That reads more like Accidental Love Confession.
I was going off of how Bait-and-Switch Sentiment described MDOL, i.e. "If Alice assumes that Bob is finally confessing his love for her, that's Mistaken Declaration of Love."
That doesn't bode well for MDOL and it likely needs its own wick check and review, but that's outside the scope of this thread.
In light of that, I actually prefer redirecting to Bait-and-Switch Sentiment
Edited by amathieu13 on Feb 3rd 2023 at 11:23:11 AM
Does it count as Bait-and-Switch Sentiment, if the person was sentimental only to pretend they weren't?
Because that's the idea of this trope, someone meaning the declaration only to pretend they didn't.
See this line from the description: "In some cases this is played for humor, while in other cases the classy character is denying the confession but feigning ignorance to avoid causing the other person embarrassment."
Intentionally pretending isn't necessary for the trope/it's a variant but the trope is broader. The description is written broad enough to encompass situations in which Character A knows Character B likes them, realizes what they said could be misconstrued, and backtracks & situations in which Character A is genuinely trying to express platonic feelings, but Character B (and the audience who shares Character B's perspective) hear the "love declaration" first and assume its something romantic until the follow up.
Both versions are still Bait And Switches, i.e. "A type of setup where a character leads the audience or other characters into thinking they are going to say or do something, but says or does something unexpected."
Edited by amathieu13 on Feb 3rd 2023 at 9:30:48 AM
I don't think the OP has a good grasp of what Love You and Everybody is supposed to be, or perhaps doesn't do a good job of getting it across. It's less a conscious attempt on the part of a character to backpedal from a declaration of love and more a way to toy with other characters and the audience by having an innocent character say something that sounds like a declaration of love but then turn out to be something else entirely. The reason I'm not sure this is actually a problem with the OP's reading of the trope is that it doesn't actually change the problem; any examples that don't have a bait-and-switch component are misuse, and it's still arguably redundant with Bait-and-Switch Sentiment. (It's actually a wonder this page was never brought up on that one's YKTTW, perhaps especially since it got mislaunched before being returned to get a better title than it originally launched with.)
I say arguably redundant, though, because Bait-and-Switch Sentiment seems to be broader, about any case where someone says something that appears to be sentimental but has a different meaning. Love You and Everybody might then be a viable subtrope, because of the Ship Tease element adding some reasons for the trope's existence and its specific expression that wouldn't apply to the broader case. It would probably still need a rename if it's being misused, though. Bait And Switch Love Confession?
I'd rather merge with Bait-and-Switch Sentiment regardless of any misunderstandings regarding Love You and Everybody's relationship with All-Loving Hero, because I don't think having only seven correct wicks out of 50 (with the page having 360 wicks total) would leave us with much if we just cleaned Love You and Everybody up (with or without renaming).
Edited by GastonRabbit on Feb 4th 2023 at 3:02:13 AM
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I absolutely agree with Morgan. This is a viable trope that can work and be renamed, but I wouldn't mind a merge either.
I can get behind merging and yarding the original concept if the correct use is that poor.
Yeah, this is distinct from Bait-and-Switch Sentiment, because in this trope (or what it's meant to be anyway), the person making the declaration of love is serious about their feeling, only to get cold feet at the last second and add the "and everybody" in order to "undo" the previous confession.
I'd be fine with Yarding, and I guess redirecting to Bait-and-Switch Sentiment to catch inbounds would be a stopgap while we wait for someone to make a draft.
Tomorrow I'll probably run a crowner for whether to do that, with a note in the crowner's header saying that Yarding is being proposed due to the lack of correct wicks for the existing page.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I don't think that's actually true. Again, the trope description, image, and laconic (which reads "Platonic love gets misinterpreted as romantic love.") all are more about a character expressing general/friendly/familial love that is misinterpreted as romantic love because of the wording and lack of ways in many languages to distinguish between the two neatly. This is why the "see also" on the page is for The Four Loves.
What this trope is actually supposed to be is a love specific subtrope of Bait-and-Switch Sentiment, with the audience / the POV character assuming they're getting a Love Confession...until the speaker finishes their sentence.
Back tracking on a genuine Love Confession out of fear of rejection or nervousness is a trope (Aborted Declaration of Love?) but it's not really what this trope was trying to be.
ETA: Looking at the examples, I'm 99% sure that Aborted Declaration of Love does cover the other idea.
Edited by amathieu13 on Feb 5th 2023 at 9:32:47 AM
After seeing what you said about Aborted Declaration of Love, I think I'm just going to have redirecting and disambiguating on the crowner, especially since Yarding is a free action anyway.
Edited by GastonRabbit on Feb 5th 2023 at 10:07:01 AM
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. So this trope is "I love cake" with "cake" as the original intention, not with "cake" as a last minute backpedal.
Honestly, I'm tempted to wonder about the accuracy of the wick check here given the apparent confusion over the definition of the trope - for what it's worth my understanding was the same as Morgan Wick and amathieu13's, but not the OP's.
Edited by nrjxll on Feb 5th 2023 at 8:19:01 AM
I reread amathieu's most recent post (I might not have been completely awake the first time I read it), and I feel that this trope is completely redundant, but not with any of the previously mentioned tropes that involve backpedaling, since the declaration of love was intended to be platonic from the beginning.
It's redundant with Bait-and-Switch Sentiment and Love Confession because it's for when a Bait-and-Switch happens when something that sounds like a love confession turns out to not be one, and examples that fool other characters are The Same, but More Specific ("Bait-and-Switch Sentiment, but for love") and examples that fool the audience are just subversions of Love Confession. There's no reason for Love You and Everybody to be separate from either of those tropes when correct examples can be listed as either love-related Bait And Switch Sentiments or subversions of Love Confession, especially with so few correct examples of Love You and Everybody to justify classifying a bait-and-switch for Love Confession as a separate trope.
I think we should disambiguate between Bait-and-Switch Sentiment and Love Confession, with the disambiguation page's listing for the latter mentioning subversions. All-Loving Hero could probably be listed as well since it's been misused in place of that.
Edit: On the subject of the wick check, I took another look at it and if we take into account that the writer of the OP mistakenly thought it was about backpedaling and not misinterpretations, I feel like we actually have less correct examples than the wick check said, considering the other folders don't appear to contain any examples that fit the correct definition.
Edited by GastonRabbit on Feb 5th 2023 at 11:33:14 AM
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I hooked a crowner for whether to merge with Bait-and-Switch Sentiment. I decided not to have separate options for whether to redirect or disambiguate this time since disambiguation pages are usually made without crowners anyway, especially since the subject of another recent TRS thread, Meddling Parents, was recently converted from a redirect to a disambiguation page after the original plan of redirecting to Overprotective Dad didn't work out due to Overprotective Dad becoming less fitting for some of the listed tropes.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
Crown Description:
Love You And Everybody is heavily misused, and merging with Bait And Switch Sentiment (possibly including sending the original definition to the Trope Idea Salvage Yard if it's determined to be distinct from that trope, due to the very small amount of correct examples for the existing trope resulting in starting from scratch on the Trope Launch Pad being suggested) has been suggested due to the trope being for when a bait-and-switch for what sounds like a Love Confession is actually a declaration of platonic love. What should be done with Love You And Everybody?
To-do list:
A while ago I tried to do a TRS for this trope despite not understanding how to do one. However coming back to the trope reveals the same problem.
Love You and Everybody is non-stock phrase way of saying "I love you and everyone", the "everyone" part being an attempt to backpedal from a declaration of love. The problem is that the trope is often a generic reference to loving everyone, often All-Loving Hero. The wick check will show that they're far more "loving everyone" examples then correct examples.
I think something like Platonic Love Backpedal would be a good rename.
