Protagonists/Team Counters

A ragtag squad led by a rookie Commander who just graduated from the military academy. Stationed in the Outpost, they take on all manner of assignments.

    Counters in general
  • Badass Crew: As the story progresses, the Counters become a formidable squad of battle-hardened Nikkes (one of whom is one of, and, if her Secret Body mode is taken into account, might as well be the most powerful Nikke in the entire Ark) who complement each other very well both in and out of combat, bound by combat-tested loyalty under a unique and proficient commander, backed up by an exceptionally good Mission Control and, if one is willing to count Andersen and Ingrid in, a badass Big Good duumvirate.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Rapi, Marian and Anis wear clothing accentuated with red, blue and yellow colors respectively. Neon, who also wears blue, substitutes for Marian after the latter's death.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: A strange example. There's no way to change your squad's name, despite indications you could, such as the Commander being asked early on, and the voice acting usually stopping short of saying the squad's name. Seems to be an unintended case of The Artifact.
  • Ms. Exposition: As the first three Nikkes you meet, Marian eases the player into most of the story's immediate situation during the prologue with Rapi, Anis and Shifty chipping in a bit. Afterwards, Rapi's Attraction episodes elaborate on the life of Commanders and Nikkes, while Anis's has her take the Commander on a tour of the Ark.
  • Out of Focus: The Nikkes of Counters rarely appear in event stories outside of sporadic cameos as well as the No Caller ID event. This allows other squads to take the reins and become the main focus of their events without the main characters overshadowing them.
  • Rank Up: In Chapter 7, after having contact with Chatterbox and Snow White the Pilgrim so often, the Central Government has the team promoted to being Special Commandos, which Andersen explicitly states also keeps them out of the control of the Big Three, especially Syuen.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: Having known each other for a while before joining Counters, Rapi and Anis tend to take these roles respectively, the former keeping her head on straight while the latter being plucky even when cynical.

    The Commander
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/commander_0.png
The Commander's "Official" Plush Doll
A young man who comes into the role of leading the Nikke squad "Counters" shortly after the death of his superior. While starting out as a rookie commander with little field experience, the Commander is defined by his outstanding sense of justice and protectiveness of Nikkes.
  • The Ace: By the time of Rapi's first Affection Story, set at least not long after the prologue, he's acquired quite the reputation for succeeding on multiple missions in contrast to the other incompetent Commanders, so far being the only one to stand out like that. It also helps a lot that he doesn't treat Nikkes as expendable, making them fight for the Commander all the more harder when the chips are down. This goes further once Counters are made Special Commandos in light of their recognitions so far, clearly marking them as a significant military asset by the Ark.
    • In Chapter 20's 4th and 5th episodes, Johan tests the Commander in a series of combat scenarios against Nihilister where Dorothy notes that, despite the Commander getting 91 failures, 6 draws and 3 wins, the last three wins happened in a row according to Johan's nigh impassable standards, even if they were just scenarios. Despite Johan still acting dismissive of the Commander, it's clear he develops a grudging respect for his determination and commanding ability, a former "rising star" of the Ark to the present one.
  • All Just a Dream: Near the end of the Kill the Lord event, the Commander is exposed to a hallucination-causing mist. As he enters a door, he suddenly finds himself on a flowery meadow, falsely remembering Humanity has successfully reclaimed the surface, and that he now lives in peace together with Marian and Counters. A slap from D brings him back to his senses.
  • Alone with the Psycho: Happens to him in Isabel's final Bond Episode after he'd previously pissed her off while trying to calm her down out of her jealousy-fuelled murderous rage, with the Commander being handcuffed by her to stop him trying to leave again.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Zig-zagged and averted later. The earliest parts of the main and event stories, as well as Attraction Episodes never explicitly mention the Commander's gender, but a specific scene in the prologue depicts the Commander as a man. Then his gender is confirmed in Rosanna's Episode, which has her eying a naked Commander and wondering aloud about her knowledge of the male body, and in Noir's, where she wants to learn about affection and says the Commander is the only male she knows.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Through the main campaign and Anis's first attraction story, it's revealed later on that the Commander has no memory of his life before graduating military school, other than the fact that he lived in the Ark their whole life and was in a hospital at one point. This in turn causes him to act like an Audience Surrogate since it justifies people expositing for them. Every now and then, however, he seems to have a flashback of talking to a unknown girl with a teddy bear.
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: It is implied that part of why he is so nice to Nikkes is because his amnesia caused him to forget most of the indoctrination the military academy puts commanders through, which is what causes most commanders to treat Nikkes as disposable.
  • Androids Are People, Too: He stands out as one of the few people in the Ark that treats Nikkes more as humans than Human Weapons, earning him a lot of loyalty and even affection from them as time goes on. Saying otherwise, as Syuen finds out the hard way, is enough to set off his Berserk Button. Unfortunately, this gets him targeted and even shot by the traitorous Exotic team in Chapter 16, as they deem the Commander's compassion for Nikkes a threat to their plan of stirring up trouble in the Ark, since it relies on exploiting the existing Just a Machine attitudes of most humans and existing friction between them and Nikkes.
  • The Charmer: On top of being universally kind to Nikkes, the Commander is shown to be notoriously flirty and intimate towards them.
  • Chick Magnet: Several Nikkes are infatuated with the Commander due to their aforementioned kindness and implied handsomeness on the Commander's part . For the April Fool's 2024 event, no less than 7 Nikkes show up when he implies that he wants to have sex in a message to the Outpost group chat.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: The Commander accepts quite a number of dubious tasks at the behest of rather dubious figures who capitalize on their goodwill and sense of justice.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Let's just say that there are no lengths too great for him in order to understand and help his Nikkes better, which include making people hit him to understand how Yuni "talks" through inflicting pain, or really getting into an idol producer persona by watching a mockumentary for Noise, who is a songwriter.
  • The Confidant: He eventually becomes this in a way for N102, since he is able to keep track of the memories she made with him even if her own memories are erased. This way he is able to help reconstruct her personality by reminding her of what she likes and how she acts regardless of how often her memories are destroyed.
  • Covert Pervert: An odd case. Because of the training most run-of-the-mill Commanders go through, they fail to even see Nikkes as women, nevermind arouse any sexual desire. Our Commander however is well aware that Nikkes are incredibly gorgeous so they still get plenty of reactions from him. In Isabel's bond story for one, when she goes to take a shower, she tells the Commander to leave the door unlocked, the implication being so the two can enjoy their 'wedding night'. The Commander, despite being somewhat suspicious, LEAVES THE DOOR SLIGHTLY OPENED. Were the situation any more pleasant, it's likely he wouldn't have hesitated to take the offer.
  • Crying Wolf: For April Fools' Day 2024, having learned his lesson from last year's escapades, the Commander decides to go on the offensive with the pranks, culminating in convincing Syuen to go to the Surface with him. Once he realizes she believes him, and that it would be dangerous if the two were to go alone, he tries to get at least one of the other squads to go with them. However, due to his previous pranks souring the other Nikkes' mood, the two end up going alone. To make matters worse, the elevator breaks down once on the surface, and because Syuen's gun has a biometric lock, she is the only one who can use it, leaving the Commander no other choice than to send her to the front lines until Matis can bail them out.
  • Depending on the Writer: This trope applies to his "relations" with the various Nikkes. The Commander is normally always flustered and self-conscious when he gets intimate with the girls, but while sometimes he's characterized as being quite eager to jump into bed with them, the other half of the time he's shown to be hesitant. Ludmilla offers him an open invitation to join her in the hot springs naked during the Nevermore event but he stoutly refuses. By contrast, in the earlier Bunny x 777 event featuring Blanc and Noir, the hard mode extra scene ends with the strong implication he's landed himself in a fivesome; an arrangement he's evidently quite happy with.
  • Determinator: The Commander is possibly the single most stubborn man on the planet. If he sets his mind on something, absolutely nothing will stop him from getting what he wants, no matter what Nikke, human, or Rapture stands in his way.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: The Commander is willing to try and look for the good in people that no one else will trust, ranging from Real Kindness to Dororthy and even Nihilister, and this largely works out for them. The one person they don't have faith in, though, is Crow, who is an unrepentant terrorist who exploits the Commander's kindness to get close enough to kill them and is incredibly nihilistic to the point of wanting to destroy the Ark over its treatment of the outer rim. Crow is notably the only Nikke that the Commander has seriously considered killing.
  • Famed In-Story: The Commander, despite starting out as a no-name just like every other Commander, gradually becomes the talk of the Ark as his heroic exploits with his Nikkes becomes known to the public. A Chapter 13 sidequest has a rookie commander named Teddy mentioning that the Commander has been voted the #1 role model of the military academy.
  • A Father to His Men: The way he deeply cares about his subordinates and his protectiveness of them in the face of the nasty treatment of them dished out by some characters quickly turns him into this once he gets out of his rookie phase. In the universe where most commanders are indoctrinated into seeing Nikkes as nothing more than disposable humanlike weapons, his compassion for his troops and insistence on treating them the same as he would treat human soldiers earns him a lot of trust and loyalty from them, respect from some of the higher-ups and hostility from certain other parties.
  • Featureless Protagonist: Played with. The Commander has almost no physical appearances and virtually every cutscene occurs in the first-person; scenes where he does appear simply show him as a tall, fair-skinned man with light brown hair and average build. However, compared to similar games where the protagonist is given the bare minimum amount of personality to serve as a stand-in for the player, the Commander is quite chatty and comes into his own character rather quickly. Additionally, while the game sometimes tries to use gender-neutral writing in some cases, it is fairly clear he is male, with Sakura specifically calling him her husbandnote , several of his nicknames only making sense for a mannote , and several Bond and Encounter scenes implying he has an erection due to what happens in said scenes.
  • First Day from Hell: The Commander just took up his post yesterday by the time of the prologue, and yet they're woken up by Marian after surviving their transport ship crashing for their first mission on the surface, have to fight Raptures in the next blink of an eye, down the Lord-class Rapture "Blacksmith" with just their few Nikkes on hand and has to execute their own first subordinate, Marian, who had already fallen to Rapture corruption. Andersen lampshades the absurdity of a rookie accomplishing all this on their first day.
  • Guile Hero: Demonstrates first tendencies of this in Chapter 6 when he's kidnapped by Chatterbox and, realising that the intelligent Rapture needs him alive for whatever reason, threatens to blow himself up and thus buys time for Snow White and the Counters to catch up to them, as well as extracts some crucial information from him. In Chapter 23, he demonstrates knowledge of sign language he picked up from Johan and figures out a way to cut power to the jamming device preventing him from pointing Anis and Neon to their location when he and Rapi are pulled into Exotic's hideout by Viper, which earns him overt praise from the otherwise reserved Rapi.
Rapi: If we didn't have to keep silent, I'd be clapping right now.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: There is no canon name, so you're free to name him whatever you want.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Decides, against the protests of Rapi and Anis, to put his faith in the Exotic Team in Chapter 16, despite their obvious hostility they'd displayed towards him and Counters right from the word 'go', plus the implications that they're involved with the Heavenly Ascension group in the Outer Rim. It ends badly, with Exotic betraying Counters and outright shooting the Commander at the end of the chapter, deeming him a threat to their plans.
  • Hostage for MacGuffin: He's taken hostage by K and D of the Perilous Siege team in Chapter 14, threatening to shoot him unless Marian hands herself over. Since they're stated to have no inhibitors like other Nikkes, they're fully capable of following through on the threat.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Suffers this at Modernia's hands after he shoots her to try and get her off of Rapi in Chapter 13. The sheer blood loss is such that, even with on-site triage, he needs to be operated on at a hospital back at the Ark to properly heal.
  • In-Series Nickname: Besides "Commander" and his nickname, many Nikkes have their own names for him: "Believer" (Rapunzel), "Birdie" (Laplace), "Boss" (Centi), "Burly Bear" (Neve), "Cadet" (Otouto in JP dub) (Moran), "Captain" (Mast and Anchor), "Client" (Dolla), "Coach" (Folkwang, Epinel, Bay and Clay), "Conductor" (Julia), "Counselor" (Real Kindness), "Cutie" (Maxwell), "Darling" (Isabel), "Greenhorn" (Liter), "Gym Rat" (Rumani), "Handsome" (Red Hood), "Highroller" (Rouge), "Honey" (Papillon), "Honey/Honeybuns" ("Darling" in JP dub) (Viper), "Human" (Nihilister), "Imposter" (Noah), "[Nickname]-kun" (Sakura), "Maestro" (Aria), "Master" (Neon and Maid For You), "Mister" (Rosanna), "Moron" (Drake), "My Lord" (Scarlet), "Newbie" (Yulha), "Noob" (Exia), "No. 7" (Ether), "Old-Timer" (The Carronades), "Pal" (Milk), "Partner" (Guillotine and Sugar), "Pit Boss" (Blanc and Noir), "Producer" (Noise), "Rabbity" (Alice), "Rookie" (Yan), "Scoops" (Nero), "Servant" (Ludmilla and Harran), "Subordinate" (Helm), "Survivalist" (Tove), "Sweetie" (Rupee), "Teacher" (Anne and Rei), "Trainer" (Biscuit), "Watson" (Novel), "Weakling" (Eunhwa), "Your Grace" (Dorothy) and "Zoo Keeper" (Leona).
  • Made of Iron: Downplayed given that he's only human, but damn if his resilience isn't impressive. So far he's survived his transport ship crashing (though he had to be resuscitated by Marian when she found him), took the sensory-transferred pain of several bullets when confronting Syuen and an avalanche nearly burying him. As of Chapter 13, he's also survived getting gutted by one of Modernia's tentacles, albeit needing surgery after the mission was over.
  • Mysterious Past: He remembers little about his past besides having spent some time in the hospital as a kid, and Exia can't find anything about his past on any database she's hacked.
  • Not Like Other Girls: Crow recognizes the Commander's purity of heart, acknowledging that his views of Nikkes as his equals is sincere and borne of compassion that sets him apart from other humans. It's also why Exotic views him as their greatest threat: they recognize the Commander's strengths as a born leader and fear the possibility that he can bridge the cultural gap between humans and Nikkes, as Heavenly Ascension and Exotic's entire plan hinges on inflaming tensions between the two.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: In Snowfield Oasis, the Commander becomes inexplicably shy towards the suggestion of explicit action or sex despite this otherwise not being the case in most of the story. This usually involves him trying to dodge most physical intimacy in the most awkward and contrived ways possible.
  • Patrick Stewart Speech: The Commander ends up giving a version of this to Laplace in her Attraction Story, where he makes a case for humans being less weak than Laplace thinks they are. Laplace eventually concedes at the end of her story that humans aren't weak, but that they still need intervention from time to time.
  • The Pollyanna: Although some particular Nikkes like Exotic and Dorothy put him through absolute hell, the Commander never stops believing in the goodness in the hearts of Nikkes and believes that Nikkes can stand as equals with the rest of humanity.
  • Rank Up: Subverted. At the end of Chapter 24, the Commander partakes in a judgment session by Enikk. Humorously, he is bestowed a promotion of 3 ranks for helping save the Ark during the Rapture invasion and protecting the Outer Rim by apprehending Crow, but due to Syuen's Engineered Heroics stunt in Chapter 18 and his refusal to disclose the existence of Vapaus, said promotion is immediately revoked.
  • Really Gets Around: Many stories and events imply/state the Commander has had sex with multiple Nikkes.
  • Social Climber: In Chapter 27, Andersen remarks to the Commander that the latter seems unusually driven to climbing the Ark military's ladder as quickly and efficiently as possible, using both his serendipity and skill to weave a web of accomplishments to boost him up the ranks. When inquired about the reason, the Commander claims thus: he wants to bring Marian back to the Ark by any means necessary, and if he needs to gain influence to do so, so be it. He later expands his definition to state that if the time comes where he and his team will be forced to make a decision that turns the whole Ark against them, he wants them to be able to stand side by side with each other and not have to answer to anyone.
  • That Came Out Wrong: In Chapter 29, when asked by Rapi why he's looking at Fragile, the Commander mentions that he noticed a hole in her pants. He fumbles his explanation due to his choice of words, however, causing Rapi to remind him that Nikke are, in fact, "anatomically accurate".
    Commander: There's a hole in Fragile's butt.
Rapi: ...All humans have a hole in their butts. Nikkes were created to resemble humans in every form, and that anatomical detail is no exception.
  • Tranquil Fury: When the Commander discovers that N102 is being brainwashed every single day, he makes it very clear to the researcher controlling her that he'll do whatever it takes to screw up her plans in the most ice-cold and determined manner possible.
  • Unique Protagonist Asset: As revealed in Chapter 13, it's his blood. According to Deputy Chief Andersen, who shares the same blood type, it's highly sought after, though he refuses to elaborate further. Later chapters explain that this blood allows for the creation of more Vapaus, but everyone in the know has to keep it secret lest people like the Central Government lock him up to be a living Vapaus factory.
  • The Voiceless: Played with; the Commander does not have voiced dialogue, but they speak plenty during cutscenes via a Dialogue Tree.
  • Your Heart's Desire: In Kill the Lord, the Commander inhales a large dosage of a hallucinogenic drug while infiltrating the target's mansion and imagines himself on the reclaimed surface with Marian and the rest of Counters, living together in peace now that the services of a Commander are no longer required.

    Marian (Unmarked Spoilers)
Voiced by: Kim Ha-ru (KR), Kana Hanazawa (JP), Ryan Bartley (EN)

The first Nikke that the Commander meets on the battlefield, who resuscitates him after he nearly dies from cardiac arrest. Marian is a kind young woman who dedicates her life to protecting the Commander and recognizes the power of his compassion towards Nikkes. Tragically however, her service is short-lived as she had been under Rapture corruption before the mission began, leading to the Commander being forced to execute her.

Pre-Chapter 13

Element: Water
Weapon: First Affection (Submachine Gun)
Class: Attacker
Rarity: SR
  • Advertised Extra: Is prominently featured in several pieces of promotional material and is in the front and center of the friendship recruitment banner, on top of acting as a devoted Deuteragonist towards the Commander in the game proper like one would see in other games like, say, Amiya of Arknights, yet is only playable for most of the tutorial before she is revealed to have been corrupted, and is killed off soon after. Then she reenters the story during Chapter 7 Reforged into a Minion as Modernia, before being freed entirely and re-joining the team in Chapter 13.
  • Broken Record: After Shifty and Rapi reveal via black box analysis that Marian shot down the transport, she starts repeating "over here" with her eyes turning red to reveal both her own corruption and the team's position to nearby Raptures.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Marian is set up as the game's Deuteragonist during the events of the prologue and Chapter 1, only to be killed off at the end of the first chapter. While she does eventually come Back from the Dead, it's Rapi who takes the reins as deuteragonist.
  • Electronic Speech Impediment: Undergoes this after revealing her corruption, with her "over here" call for reinforcements degenerating and degrading the longer it goes on.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • During her reload animation, her eyes briefly glow red... and at the end of the tutorial, she's revealed to have been corrupted by the Raptures.
    • She also volunteers to guide the team to their mission destination, despite Rapi and Anis' assurances that only the dead former Commander of Counters knew where that was, claiming that the coordinates were uploaded into her system as she was sent up. In hindsight, it's obvious that she got the information as part of her role as The Mole to trap Team Counters.
  • Mercy Kill: The Commander is forced to put her down after her corruption, since Nikkes by programming cannot kill their own and corrupted Nikkes can't end their own lives.
  • The Mole: Not by choice, but Marian turns out to be a Rapture mole trying to get the team killed, starting with detonating the explosives meant for the mission while they were still on the transport, crashing it and nearly killing the Commander.
  • Nice Girl: Very kind to the Commander, even defending him when Rapi insults him for being a greenhorn. It makes her corruption and death all the more tragic, especially since her last words are to thank the Commander for the bandage he gave her.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Her corruption by the Rapture and Mercy Kill at the Commander's hands sets the stakes of the story, since it's established that the corrupting freshly produced Nikkes from within the Ark itself has never happened before.
  • Walking Spoiler: Saying anything about her role in the story is incredibly difficult without spoilers.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Marian is introduced in the tutorial—and is killed off by the end of it. Subverted later on when she's cured of her Rapture corruption via mind-wipe in Chapter 13 and re-joins Counters, albeit as a complete amnesiac (thanks to her NIMPH having been destroyed before the mind-wipe) who can't even speak properly when she first gets to the Outpost.

Post-Chapter 13

Modernia
First Affection
Second Affection

Element: Fire
Weapon: New Dawn (EN) (Machine Gun)JP name
Class: Attacker
Rarity: SSR
  • A Day in the Limelight: The first Side Story, Second Affection, takes place after Chapter 14 and shows Marian's interactions with the Pioneer Squad, learning from them about the world around her while they travel to the castle of the White Knights Squad to leave her in their care. While she initially protests and wants to return to the Commander, to the point of feeling useless and abandoned after being given to the White Knights, she eventually realizes the risks the Commander has taken to get her out of the Ark, and the danger she would bring about upon her return, and (literally) transforms into a more mature person by the end of it.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: Despite undergoing a complete neural wipe that essentially reset her brain back to the state of a newly-born infant, she somehow manages to retain the ability to say the word "Commander" even before she relearns how to talk. It's also mentioned in a later story scene that she has a curious obsession with bandages, and in her Bond Story she reveals that she recalls the moment she died (but none of the details).
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: Very much so after being freed from The Corruption, as she needed to have ALL of her memories erased to do it, so she's effectively a blank sheet post memory wipe.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: During the Second Affection Side Story, Marian demands to leave Crown's castle and return to the Ark. Crown not only allows it, but offers to escort her to it. However, as they're about to arrive, Marian starts realizing the danger her return will bring not only the White Knights, but also the Commander, and tearfully asks to go back to their castle.
Marian: ...I'm sorry. I guess there was no other way. Everyone knew except me. To be honest... I knew too. It's just that... it was all so sad. It felt like I was abandoned and all alone...
Crown: You Are Not Alone. You have me.
  • Black Box: Marian is essentially a living one and the main reason she becomes a MacGuffin Super-Person. Being the very first allied Nikke who was formerly a Heretic, Marian possesses Rapture tech whose function and workings are completely unknown to humanity and essentially give her superpowers exceeding those of normal Nikkes. Admi states that Marian has four black boxes within her and that if she is turned over to the Central Government, they will likely tear her apart. During her Bond Story, Ingrid is given permission to run some basic analysis on her body, but is incredibly reluctant to discuss her findings and insists on keeping the results top secret from both Counters and the Central Government after learning some disturbing truths from the data she was able to collect from the samples she could take from Marian.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Let's see, Energy Absorption, being able to turn Nigh-Invulnerable at will, along with Super-Speed.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: She's unfortunately managed to pick up ALL of Pioneer Squad's various personality quirks during her time with them.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Delivers this to Perilous Siege in chapter 14. D and K don't even last a second against her.
  • Death of Personality: Suffers this in Chapter 13, since a mind wipe is the only way to cleanse her of the Rapture infection Chatterbox injected directly into her brain and she'd already lost her NIMPH nanites prior to that. While she's still alive and able to relearn everything she forgot, the old Marian is gone for good. Though it is revealed that she does have a few memories, and an affinity for certain things like bandages and the word "Commander".
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Sports these after living a few days with the White Knights, feeling abandoned not only by the Commander, but also the Pioneer Squad.
  • Dumb Muscle: Reduced to this after she re-joins Counters. She's naive, innocent and (initially) can barely even speak properly thanks to losing all her memories but is far and away the strongest member of the team by virtue of being a Nikke-Rapture Heretic hybrid of technology.
  • The Gift: Outright stated to be a prodigy in terms of learning combat by Anis, which is even more amazing considering that this is a Marian who's lost all of her memories in the process of being freed, including her combat programming, and is essentially rebuilding her knowledge from scratch.
  • Heroic Resolve: In Second Affection, Marian learns what it means to protect someone you care about from Chime and Crown after she nearly exhausts herself trying to protect Chime from a nearby Tyrant-class Rapture. This causes her to shed her current form, causing her to transform into a new outfit and equipment, to indicate her newfound courage and determination.
  • Hybrid Power: Thanks to being a fusion of Nikke and Rapture Heretic in the wake of her Heel–Face Turn and coming back to Counters, Marian is stated to be FAR stronger than just about any other Nikke, as proven in Chapter 14 when she manages to knock out K and D in seconds, despite one of them having their gun directly to the Commander's head and Marian herself being across the room from them.
  • Insane Troll Logic: After getting drunk while travelling with Pioneer, she picked up her habit of wearing her underwear over her clothes again. Snow White tries to correct her, but can't argue against Marian's reasoning.
Snow White: You're supposed to wear your underwear under your clothing.
Marian: It doesn't affect my movement, so what does it matter?
    Snow White: ...
Snow White: Come to think of it, you're right. I can't refute that.
  • Lethal Chef: In Lost Kingdom, Crown and Chime are noticeably worried when mention of Marian cooking comes up. Given the Extreme Omnivore habit she obtained from Snow White, it's not hard to see why. Her first encounter with Kilo has her attempting to serve tarantulas. Not even cooked or processed in any fashion. Kilo attempts to eat one and faints on the spot.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: Becomes this once she's cleansed of The Corruption and returned to Counters, with almost anyone and everyone wanting to get their hands on Marian thanks to her being a Nikke-Rapture hybrid that's far stronger than almost any other Nikke that exists, hoping to use her for their own benefit.
  • More Dakka: Her Burst Skill gives her temporary infinite ammo on top of an auto-aim reticle that allows her to fire upon every enemy within her sights simultaneously, giving her the power to raze waves of mobs single-handedly.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Begs the team not to let her go with the Pilgrims when they meet up with them, insisting that she'll be good and pleading that she wants to stay with Counters.
  • Put on a Bus: Counters sends her off to live with the Pilgrims on the surface in Chapter 14 to protect Marian from the various parties in the Ark that want to take her for themselves.
  • Running Gag: When running into enemies in the overworld, Marian will humorously mangle the "Encounter" catchphrase in various ways.
  • She's Back: Officially re-joins Counters in Chapter 13, though she's a complete amnesiac and has to re-learn almost everything from scratch courtesy of Mind-Reformat Death she received to free her from Rapture corruption.
  • Shoulder Cannon: Her main weapon as a Nikke is a pair of shoulder-mounted machine guns.
  • Stripperific: Not that her standard outfit doesn't already leave much to the imagination, but her second form is somehow even skimpier, giving her a black minidress that leaves the entirety of her sides, hips and upper thighs exposed, has sparkle-shaped cutouts across her midriff, and shows off her cleavage.
  • Strong, but Unskilled: The Hybrid Power inherent in her combined Rapture-Nikke body gives her more power than just about any other Nikke, but thanks to the Mind-Reformat Death she underwent to purge the remaining Rapture code she's essentially a child mentally, having to completely re-learn even the most basic of combat actions. Thankfully, she's a fast learner.
  • Super-Strength: In the First Affection mini-event, Marian is locked in a jail cell by Poli and Miranda after she jumps into waste water and starts tracking it all over the Outpost. When the Commander shows up and tells her that she can leave, she happily obliges by casually bending open the jail's metal bars with her bare hands before stepping outside.
  • Super-Toughness: M.M.R. discovers through testing that Marian's skin has become a fusion of Nikke and Rapture components, giving her the ability to control its hardness and make herself Nigh-Invulnerable. Ingrid realizes the danger of this knowledge and promptly demands the findings be destroyed.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Deconstructed post-mind wipe. Her complete lack of memories means that she has no reason to hate the Raptures, and early in Chapter 14 she even soothes one that's dying in the aftermath of a fight, wondering why humanity needs to fight them. However, this act of sympathy quickly reaches the Ark's higher echelons and makes them very nervous that she could go rogue, with some using it as a pretext to try and take her in for questioning later on in the chapter.
  • They Would Cut You Up: What portions of the Central Government want to do to her. The four Black Boxes and wealth of Rapture tech she's been refitted with during her time as a Heretic are far beyond anything humanity has at their disposal. Commander Burningum especially cites closing the tech gap as his reason for getting his hands on and dissecting Marian in Chapter 14, insisting that doing so could potentially jump the Ark's tech forward a whole century.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Said word for word before the final Tyrant Rapture battle, against a Blacksmith, in Second Affection.
    Marian: "You...shall not... pass!"
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: When Marian overhears T.A.L.O.S. and Kilo confirming her identity as Modernia and discusses relaying the information to the Ark, Marian steps in and obliquely warns Kilo that choosing to do so will come with extremely dire consequences for anyone who dares to harm the people she loves. Given who she's dealing with, Kilo takes the threat to heart and backs down.

Original Design
White Promise
Classic Vacation
Element: Fire
Weapon: Militaria (Assault Rifle)
Class: Attacker
Rarity: SR
Voiced by: Kim Bo-na (KR), Yui Ishikawa (JP), Kayli Mills (EN)

One of the main members of Counters and a former member of Absolute. Rapi is the type of girl who seems cold and distant, putting her orders first and her personal feelings second. Despite this, her loyalty to the Commander is unwavering, orders or not. She tends to act as the mediator between Anis and Neon whenever the two argue.

  • Actor Allusion: Rapi has a +28% rate bonus in the NieR: Automata Crossover event, referencing how she shares her Japanese voice actress with Automata protagonist 2B. This also gets referenced in the event story, where Neon and Anis remark that they sound similar.
  • Amnesiac Resonance: This is how Exia discovers that Rapi is faking Laser-Guided Amnesia, by telling her to open a box. Rapi opens the box and discovers nothing. Exia then reveals (via closed communication) that the box has a manufacturing defect that causes it to explode if opened the wrong way; Rapi, despite not remembering the box, opened it at the exact angle needed to prevent it from detonating since she opened an identical box three years ago and was injured by the blast.
  • Badass Boast: Indulges in a couple of those after Chapter 26, to the understandable surprise of her squadmates. Justified as of Chapter 30; the "new body" she was outfitted with at the end of Chapter 26 apparently comes with much higher specs than what Rapi used to have.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: How Ingrid describes the process behind Rapi's Secret Body technique: By activating it, Rapi's and Red Hood's cores fight for control over their shared body. The resulting energy spike boosts Rapi's power to the point she can easily overpower multiple Heretics at the same time. However, the longer she remains in this state, the more control will shift over to Red Hood. By prematurely ending it before Red Hood can take over completely, Rapi's body releases a toxin to remove any remnants of Red Hood's consciousness, the side effects being an extreme increase in body temperature, which can be fatal unless her body is sufficiently cooled.
  • Berserk Button: Rapi becomes aggressive when she discovers Anachiro's body inside Grave's coffin, so much so that she is able to manifest Red Hood's power despite Red Hood seemingly disappearing after Chapter 26.
  • Blatant Lies: Played for Laughs; When Liveryn asks the Commander during their surface expedition if he's currently seeing someone, Rapi immediately shoots her down, claiming that he's married and has two kids.
  • Broken Bird: Overlaps with Broken Ace. Rapi can be rather withdrawn and cold, which lands her in hot water with her former squad, Absolute, but this is mostly due to having difficulty with expressing her vulnerable side. Prior to the start of the story, she accidentally killed a human and was aghast not only at her carelessness, but at her immediate reaction being irritated over having to file a report for the incident. She chose to resign from Absolute without a word to her then squadmates do some soul searching. This eventually led to her being placed under the supervision of the player Commander, and their adventures together began from there.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Engaging!" ("Encounter!" in JP dubbing) whenever she initiates combat.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: To some degree, she has interrupted some of the other Nikke before they could try to express their affection for the Commander, on one occassion telling the Commander that if he wanted to hold anyone's hand that hers was always available, and by Chapter 25, even Red Hood, who possessed her body, finds that Rapi is zealous enough to seize back control of her hands so she could cling to the Commander and refuse to let go. This extends to the point that in Bond Conversations with Red Hood, who is still borrowing Rapi's body, she will refuse to try and "get frisky" with the Commander because Rapi would never let her hear the end of it. In later chapters, demonstrates this to increasing degrees, which is sometimes Played for Laughs.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In the climactic ending of Chapter 24, Rapi fully engages Secret Body "Red Hood" and battles Chatterbox, Nihilister, and Indivilia. We are shown, in rather short order: Rapi deflecting a punch from Chatterbox with her bare fists, walloping him and throwing him into Nihilister to neutralize them both, then grabbing Indivilia's bladed tail, snapping it in half then impaling her with it to take her out. This continues into a sequence where Rapi pummels all three incapacitated Raptures into the Ark elevator, with even Dorothy appalled that she, as a Pilgrim and former Goddess Squad leader, is being outmatched in raw power.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique:
    • "Red Riding Hood" causes Rapi's physical power to far exceed superhuman levels but is extremely deadly to keep active for more than moments as it will rapidly destroy her body. Anis and Neon are later seen struggling to keep Rapi's body temperature below critical heat as she staves off the aftereffects of using it. Chapter 24 reveals an arguably worse danger than that: "Red Riding Hood" has a built-in time limit that marks how long Rapi can have it safely activated. Exceeding the time limit will strain her body so much that the actual Red Hood will be granted control of Rapi's body ...and left free to pursue her possibly-omnicidal goals. With Red Hood gone for good at the end of Chapter 26, Rapi no longer has access to the former's powers.
    • Even after Red Hood is revealed to not be a threat to the Ark in Chapter 26, her taking control of Rapi's body is still dangerous, for Rapi specifically. Ingrid reveals that, the longer Red Hood remains in control, the more of Rapi's consciousness is fading away. So far, Red Hood only took over once prior to the events of the main story, and by the time Rapi was brought back, she lost several months worth of her memory.
    • Averted as of Chapter 30, as she is able to manifest the power despite the "death" of Red Hood, but unlike before it is more stable and does not cause Rapi's body to excessively overheat, preventing immediate risk of death.
  • Deader than Dead: Well, she's not dead yet, but The Reveal of Chapter 9 puts Rapi square in danger of falling prey to this. Thanks to her NIMPH nanites having been destroyed via prior exposure to Vapaus, Rapi can't be transferred over to another body if her brain is ever destroyed in combat. Once she's gone, she's gone for good.
  • Deadpan Snarker: While Rapi is nowhere near Anis when it comes to the amount of snark she dishes out, she has her moments. Unlike Anis, who's openly sarcastic with her remarks, Rapi delivers hers in a much more reserved manner. One notable example is found in Chapter 11:
Laplace: Let's go! We're gonna find the Heretic fragment! And we'll share this accomplishment with Absolute right down the middle. Now that is justice in the truest sense!
Rapi: (with her usual emotionless expression) How 'honorable' of you to give us half the glory.
  • Death Seeker: Used to be one in the past, presumably between the points in time when Red Hood died and when she became a part of Absolute.
Rapi (to Red Hood): At first, I wanted to leave everything to you. Because I thought you were more valuable than me. But then I met other people, and we grew close. We created some wonderful memories together, and I met someone very precious to me. I went from being an empty shell to being completely fulfilled.
Red Hood: It feels nice to live, doesn't it?
    Rapi: Yes, it does.
Red Hood: Then it's settled. You go and live your own life. Don't cling to what's gone.
    Rapi: I will.
  • De-power: At the end of Chapter 26, Red Hood parts ways with Rapi after fulfilling her last wish to visit her hometown and completely disappears from her body, thus preventing her from having access to Secret Body. Subverted to the point of inversion when Rapi manages to channel this power without Red Hood and use it against Grave to make her flee, noting afterwards that the power feels more stable in usage and while it still exhausts Rapi, it doesn't cause her to overheat, in Chapter 30.
  • Deuteragonist: Is the Series Mascot for a reason. She serves as the Commander's de facto Number Two, and ensuing plot twists reveal there is more to her backstory than is apparent at first that ties into the larger story.
  • Empty Shell: During their final talk in Chapter 26, Rapi admits she felt this way when comparing herself to Red Hood, and even considered letting her have full control of their body. But after meeting Absolute, Counters, and the Commander, Rapi has found a new purpose in her life.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Used semi-humorously in Chapter 26, where it is maintained that Rapi has a limited amount of control over Red Hood's body even when Red Hood is the dominant body. This results in some amusing interactions such as Rapi stopping Red Hood from talking when the latter suggests that she and the Commander of them are in love, or Rapi forcing Red Hood to shake her head furiously when the latter thinks that Rapi wants to go to her own hometown.
  • Foreshadowing: Chapter 5 has Alice asking if Counters have legendary weapons. Anis makes up one for Rapi, saying her "legendary weapon was sealed because it is too powerful", only the Rabbity (Commander) can break the seal (by taking off Rapi's buttons), and Rapi says it must be used sparingly. Then in Chapter 13, Rapi activates Secret Body when the Commander is impaled by Modernia's tentacle, letting her tear off the tentacle stabbing into her and throw it at Modernia at the speed of sound within seconds. Afterwards, she overheats to fatal levels and had to be cooled down for a long while.
  • From Zero to Hero: The Hard Mode ending of Red Ash reveals that Rapi started as a mere mass-produced Nikke when she first met Red Hood 30 years after the event's story. Roughly 70 years later, she's been a member of Elysion's top squad, and is currently working for the Commander who probably has the best odds of actually being able to reclaim the surface.
  • Grand Theft Me: Thanks to her using Secret Body one time too many, Red Hood's lingering consciousness forcibly resurfaces and steals Rapi's body at the end of Chapter 24.
  • Heel Realization: Chapter 10 reveals that she had one prior to the story, which caused her to leave Team Absolute. She accidentally killed a human on a mission to destroy 5 Tyrant-class Raptures venturing too close to the Ark, and was horrified with herself when her first reaction was irritation at needing to write a report about the casualty even as she was watching them die, to the point of declaring herself "damaged" in the head and heart and deciding that she needed to figure out who she was.
  • Identity Breakdown: Happened to her before the events of the game, as revealed in Chapter 10. Rapi refuses to see herself as a human, but her failure to protect her commander back when she was a part of Absolute, as well as her reaction to the sight of him dying caused her to stop seeing herself as a Nikke either. This is also the reason she has left Absolute.
Rapi: I killed a human on that mission. It was a grenade.
Emma: Accidents happen all the time during missions. No one holds you accountable, you know that.
Rapi: I know. But... as I watched them bleed out with half their body missing, you know what I was thinking? I was irritated that I'd have to write a report. I was damaged. My head. My heart. I was made to protect the humans, and yet I was treating one of their deaths as an annoyance. I... was disturbed by that. That's why I decided to quit. I didn't know who I was. I wasn't a human, nor could I say I was a Nikke. I didn't know who or what I was.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: A rare example characterized by stoicism rather than innocence. Still qualifies for unquestionable loyalty to her cause, her squad and her Commander, protecting the player Commander from going over the Moral Event Horizon in Chapter 24 by shooting Crow with a suppression bullet before Commander could kill her with a live round, even though she arguably had more of a reason to want her head and being, as seen in Chapter 12, quite literally incorruptible, though it has to do with her NIMPH having been destroyed in the past rather than her character qualities.
  • Irony
    • Irritation at having to do paperwork regarding her commander's death on a mission some time ago was the trigger to her Identity Breakdown that caused her to leave Absolute, as revealed in Chapter 10. In the present day, Rapi acts as a secretary to Commander since at first, he's clueless about all the relevant paperwork, and later due to other commander's duties he has to attend to. She also filled out paperwork for her multiple previous commanders, but that was because they were lazy rather than clueless. In one of her advise sessions, you have the option to offer her a helping hand with the papers, which she refuses, if with gratitude for your intention.
    • In Chapter 26, Anis and Neon bemoan being weaker and, by extension, more disposable than the likes of Red Hood and Dorothy. They state their intentions to approach their respective bosses and request upgrades. The only Counters member who does end up getting an upgrade by the end of said chapter is Rapi, who never expressed overt dissatisfaction with her capabilities, which ended up only widening the gap between her and her two squadmates.
  • I Will Find You: Inverted; Rapi pleads with the Commander to "find her" right before Enikk ejects her, Dorothy, and the incapacitated Heretics out of the Ark. Ingrid not-so-subtly hints to the Commander afterwards that he will need to "find" Rapi in more ways than physical.
  • The Lancer: A stoic, composed young woman who is Number Two to the Commander and implied to be one of the best Nikkes in the entire Ark, despite being ranked as SR. She's a constant companion for the Commander and her high combat proficiency keeps her in an indisputable position of second-in-command in their unique squad.
    • Also implied to have been this to Eunhwa during her time in Absolute.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Played with. She is subject to Mind-Reformat Death as a result of her involvement with the Chatterbox operation, but she seemingly avoided the procedure by faking her memory loss. However, Exia later discovers and reveals to the team that Rapi has had her memories wiped before; the most recent instance didn't work because she developed immunity. It is revealed at the end of Chapter 9 that Rapi had the NIMPH in her brain destroyed at some point, which would negate any memory alteration procedures that would have been attempted on her.
  • Lightning Bruiser: not explicitly stated to be one after getting upgraded post-Chapter 26, but shown as such in Chapter 30. She survived getting crushed by Grave's weapon, unharmed despite how its sheer weight caused Rapi's body to contort and deform, dodged the hail of Grave's gunfire (something not even a Heretic was shown to be able to do)Chapter 13 spoiler and was confident enough in her strength that when her own firearm proved useless against Grave, she decided to get in close and personal for some Good Old Fisticuffs, something only Dorothy, one of the most powerful Pilgrims, was able to pull off effectively. While Rapi was unable to definitively show her raw strength on Grave, she later beheaded Hammering with a punch, something that never happened in Nikke hand-to-hand combat before. All of this before/without activating Secret Body.
  • Losing Your Head:
    • Gets her head shot off her by an electron beam in Chapter 2. The then-rookie Commander is understandably shocked by the sight and required a slap from Anis to get back in action.
    • Invokes this by punching Hammering's head off in Chapter 30 when the parasitic crystals get dangerously close to her brain.
  • Ms. Exposition: As one of the three characters you start the game with, her Bond Story partially serves as a deliberation on the basics of how Nikkes physically function and how they interact with human society.
  • Mysterious Past: As the game's story progresses, it becomes clear that there's a lot more to Rapi than initially appears, even more than she herself knows. Revealing the secrets of her past slowly becomes a major subplot over the course of the story.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Despite her reserved and professional demeanor, she was somehow convinced to pull a prank on the Commander by sleeping with him without his knowledge during the April Fools' event.
    • She is terrified of ghosts and ghost stories, a fact that her teammates tease her about on several occasions.
  • Older Than They Look: Is at least 85-90 years old, as she would have been a teenager at her youngest when converted into a Nikke. Red Hood wakes up 30 years after the events of Red Ash where she finally meets her, with a remaining 70 years until reaching the present remaining.
  • Only Sane Woman: Between Anis's pluckiness, Neon's naïveté and obsessions with firepower, and the Commander's own quirks, she tends to be the only one who stays focused.
  • Palette Swap: Her first alternate outfit, "White Promise", is a white and blue color swap of her default outfit.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: A CG image in Chapter 24 shows that Rapi's eyes glow with a red light when Red Hood is active.
  • Red Is Heroic:
    • Rapi wears black and red Absolute garb and fights to protect humanity. Also, her Red Riding Hood form literally turns her hair scarlet red.
    • Her mass-produced body, first seen in Red Ash, is distinguished from standard mass-produced Nikkes with a bright red suit and visor.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: The ending of Chapter 24 reveals that when Rapi fully invokes Red Hood, she not only gets scarlet hair but even manifests Red Hood's blazing red scarf out of pure energy.
  • Secret Test of Character: Her last two Attraction episodes has her explain the dangers of being a Nikke since the average inexperienced Commander and Nikke get too in over their heads believing they're invincible, letting her gauge the Commander's attitude towards his job to ensure he isn't like that. She finds him worthy of her protection by the end.
  • Sexy Secretary: She's a beauty who wears a uniform that hugs her curves and exposes the entirety of her stocking-covered legs up to her hips and often acts as the Commander's second-in-command. The "secretary" part of her is better shown during her first affection episode, where she drafts combat reports for the Commander, who is still new to his job and didn't even know he had to submit them for money, and reveals that it came from being ordered to by previous lazy Commanders she worked under.
  • Sharing a Body: Rapi is playing host to the mind and powers of the deceased Pilgrim and Goddess Squad member Red Hood, which is the source of her Secret Body/Red Riding Hood Super Mode, a secret that only she and Ingrid are privy to. After meeting Red Hood in person, Ingrid explains Rapi's condition in further detail: While Rapi and Red Hood do share a body, it's described as "two bodies compressed into one", with Rapi having full control. This gives her body some unique characteristics, like having twice the weight of a regular Nikke, and possessing two cores. Elysion has tried multiple times to separate Rapi and Red Hood, but even when Rapi's body is reassembled, Red Hood's core will always reappear within her new body, as well. No longer the case as of the end of Chapter 26.
  • She's Back: After Red Hood injects herself with a toxin created to kill her consciousness, Rapi regains control of her body.
  • Still Wearing the Old Colors: Rapi keeps the red-and-black aesthetic of her previous squad, Absolute, as well as the squad's beret.
  • The Stoic: She's very disciplined and follows orders to the letter like any soldier should, though she has her moments where she lets this up in favor of acting soft. But there's a couple of other moments where she's Not So Stoic, like suddenly bolting out of the room when she hears about ghosts in one Advise event, or buying more rations than needed in Yan's second Attraction Episode.
  • Super Mode: Her Dangerous Forbidden Technique is the ability to invoke the powers of the fallen Pilgrim Red Hood, former member of the Goddess Squad. When engaged, Rapi's hair turns scarlet red and she gains an utterly monstrous power boost, attaining Super-Strength and Super-Speed capabilities well exceeding those of even Heretics, as demonstrated by her being able to Curb-Stomp Battle Nihilister, Indivilia, and Chatterbox simultaneously with Dorothy's assistance. However, the mode has a hard time limit, as exceeding it will strain Rapi's body too much and cause control of her body to be shifted to Red Hood. After Red Hood disappears following the events of Chapter 26, Rapi believes that she has lost access to Red Hood's powers, but Chapter 30 reveals that not only can she still tap into it, it is much safer than before since it no longer relies on Red Hood's physical presence.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Whatever the "Red Hood" truly is, it is heavily implied to be this, given how Rapi and Ingrid refer to it more like a beast that lives within Rapi's mind. Chapter 24 reveals this is because Red Hood apparently has ambitions of destroying The Ark...while also being capable of forcibly hijacking Rapi's body if she taps into the latter's powers for too long.
  • Team Mom:
    • Is the level headed and reasonable Only Sane Man in Counters' eclectic array of personalities. While initially a little cold and distant, she evolves into a very caring and dependable figure vital to the safety and mental well-being of the team.
    • A classic example of this is when the childlike Marian keeps wearing her underwear on her clothes, rather than trying to use reason, Rapi instead makes up a disease that she'd catch "underwarts" if she keeps it up. Marian believes it... but decides she's fine with getting them anyway.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: In one of Delta's chats, Delta hands Rapi a box of "vitamins" (actually condoms, but Delta doesn't know that) and tells her to give it to the Commander, also suggesting that he'll use them later. Delta notes that Rapi said nothing but looked at her with a rather vacant stare, one that she has never seen even on the battlefield.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Rapi claims that she does not have one. It's justified in this case, since not having a personal attachment or need for food reminds her that she is an android and protects her from the risk of a Mind Switch.
  • Transformation of the Possessed: Red Hood's taking control of Rapi when she exceeds the safety window of her Hour of Power is marked by her physically transforming into Red Hood. Clothes, weapon and all. This inches towards a full on Clone by Conversion due to the circumstances of their fusion, risking the possibility of overriding her completely the longer Red Hood has Rapi's body and mind shapeshifted into a copy of her original self—fortunately, Red Hood isn't thrilled about replacing Rapi either and once the opportunity for Red Hood to purge herself safely presents itself, Rapi's sense of self and appearance returns back to normal.
  • Uniformity Exception:
    • Her mass-produced body is visually distinct from the standard mass-produced Nikke sprite, having a red suit body with orange lights and magenta-colored hair.
    • Gameplay-wise, she's the only member of Counters to not have an SSR variant, either normal of seasonal, as both Neon and Anis get an SSR swimsuit alternate while Marian returns as an SSR Pilgrim.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's afraid of ghosts, despite trying to downplay it. Despite that, in the ACPU Halloween event, she's shown t be able to get over it if told the Commander is in danger.
  • You Are Number 6: Her original serial number, "RR-15436".

Sparkling Summer

Element: Iron (Normal); Electric (Sparkling Summer)
Weapon: Liberty's Tail (Rocket Launcher) [Normal]; Libertine Aqua (Shotgun) [Sparkling Summer]
Class: Defender (Normal); Supporter (Sparkling Summer)
Rarity: SR (Normal); SSR (Sparkling Summer)
Voiced by: Kim Seoung-hui (KR), Miho Okasaki (JP), Michelle Marie (EN)

One of the main members of Counters. Compared to the stoic Rapi, Anis appears to be the talkative, playful type, although this mostly serves to make her cynicism and distrust of humans more apparent.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Though taken aback at first, she admits she's grateful for the Commander being nice to her and other Nikkes, especially when he stood up for the squad when Syuen insulted them, all being a likely welcome surprise for a cynic like her. It's to the point Anis blurts out (and quickly cuts herself off) that she "adores" them in a later story segment.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Despite her worries about her weight and figure in her Summer version's BlaBla conversations and being noticeably wider and pudgier than other Nikkes (something the Commander himself will talk about in their conversation), Anis is no less attractive than any other Nikke, with thick thighs, a great ass, and a terrific bust that she's understandably quite proud of.
  • Big-Breast Pride: She has tremendous confidence in her looks, and is especially pleased by the Commander's attraction to her curves whether he expresses it directly or indirectly. In one of her advise sessions, the favorable response to her having stiff shoulders is to say Anis' shoulder is heavy, which leads to her evident pleasure at how large and attractive her chest is.
  • Butt-Monkey: She tends to be the first casualty in any humorous situation or dealing with Cloudcuckoolanders.
    • In Chapter 2, while crawling through a sewer, the Commander accidentally rams his face into her butt when the squad has to stop. She's not pleased by it.
    • When the squad goes to Yan's shop in her 2nd Bond Episode, Anis swears that they won't fall for her sales tactics like the Commander did. She and everyone else are Instantly Proven Wrong.
    • In Yuni's last story episode, she is the first to get hit by the Commander and somehow understands what he wants to say. She runs away out of fear of more "communication".
  • Cleavage Window: Her shirt has a very low collar that exposes her bust, given more attention by her rocket launcher's strap over it. This is usually covered up whenever she shows up in game advertisements.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Anis not-so-subtly expresses her disapproval of the Commander's frequent philandering with other girls, whether it's getting kisses from Noir and Blanc or leering at other Nikkes in their swimsuits. During the first anniversary livestream, she voices her dismay more directly and makes it clear she wants the Commander all to herself.
Anis: I've noticed this before, but it seems like you really have an intense interest in other Nikkes, Commander. I would think I'd be more than enough to hold your interest...
    Shifty: What was that?
Anis: Er, nothing! Let's keep it moving.
  • Cool Big Sis: Anis wins the Vesti's admiration by being the first person to ever mouth off to Eunhwa.
  • The Cynic: During and after your first meeting with her, whatever cheery personality she displays is marred by her morbid remarks about living as a Nikke, particularly about how expendable they are to other Commanders or how impossible the mission gets. Moments like these often highlight the contrast between herself and the Commander's optimism and care for Nikkes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She is not afraid to speak her mind, and will happily call out a person's faults regardless of their status or rank. It can often lead to a degree that Rapi has to reel her in to prevent potential backlash.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: She usually gives her signature squint of disapproval when hearing or witnessing something outrageous.
  • Fangirl: To Commander. The First Affection mini-event reveals that Anis was one of the backers who crowdfunded the production of Commander dolls, one of which is given to post-comeback Marian.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Despite their contrasting personalities, she and Rapi became this over the course of their longtime partnership that carries over in Counters.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being caustic and grumpy at the best of times, Anis still loves her squadmates dearly. Her bitter attitude as The Cynic stems more from all the injustices Nikkes have endured on top of the constant danger they face in their Crapsack World, where failure means either death or Laser-Guided Amnesia. As the saying goes, inside every cynic is a disappointed idealist, and Anis is the most outwardly passionate of Counters about keeping her friends safe. Also, during Sea, You, Again, she's immediately able to tell why Helm isn't able to enjoy herself on their mission at Bluewater Island, and tries to get her to have fun and then take better care of herself when the situation starts to go south.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: She stomps on an immobile and mostly destroyed Chatterbox in a rage after it interferes and essentially lobotomises Modernia right as Marian resurfaced within her, forcing the Ark to completely mind-wipe her to purge The Corruption.
  • Locked in a Room: Her Summer version's Bond Episodes feature herself and the Commander getting trapped in a cave while trying to hunt for treasure, and two grow closer to each other as they try to escape and learn about the cave's history.
  • Ms. Exposition: Compared to Rapi, who helps world-build on the Nikkes, Anis's Bond Episodes have her taking the Commander on a tour of the Ark and explaining how the place runs as a society of humans and Nikkes living underground with limited access to natural resources and maintains its seemingly pristine appearance.
  • Ms. Fanservice: While most of the Nikkes are this to a degree, Anis stands out particularly among Counters with her thick thighs, enormous breasts, and wide-open Cleavage Window, with her rocket launcher's strap drawing even more attention to her massive knockers. Given she's one of the first Nikkes you meet, she sets the bar for subsequent characters. Her Summer version has her showing off even more of her aforementioned tits and thighs in a bikini, with her top having a Cleavage Window between her breasts and her bikini's straps visibly digging into her skin.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Near the end of Chapter 26, when Dorothy tries to destroy the injection gun needed to turn Red Hood back into Rapi (which would lead to Rapi's death), a fight between her and Counters breaks out. After Red Hood shoots Dorothy through the abdomen, Anis grabs her by the neck and points a self-termination gun at Dorothy's head, ready to kill her for trying to kill Rapi. Anis only calms down after Neon points out Dorothy is no longer a threat due to being too injured to move properly.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The hot-tempered and fun-loving Red to Rapi's cool and stoic Blue.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: She can be quite paranoid about people outside of Counters, especially non-Nikkes, and refuses to trust Shifty during Chapter 9, despite others repeatedly calling her out on it. She's right to be suspicious, not because they can't trust Shifty, but because the person they are talking to is actually Syuen disguised as Shifty.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Compared to the straightlaced Rapi and the goofy Neon, Anis is a lot more forthcoming when it comes to flirting with the Commander, especially so in her Summer version when she's flaunting her assets in her bikini. Of particular note is a Brief Encounter at the Outpost when the Commander joins her and Mast in a paper boat race - she unzips her jacket to give him an eyeful of her breasts when he seems to be winning, distracting him well enough that he stops paying attention to his off-course boat and loses to her (along with making him quickly leave with a Raging Stiffie afterwards).
  • Stepford Smiler: While she's far more easygoing and fun-loving compared to Rapi, her carefree demeanor hides a far more cynical and distrustful side to her as a result of the bleak nature of the world around her and her life as an expendable Nikke.
  • Straight Man: She's usually first to retort to whatever a Cloudcuckoolander does, or be the Tsukkomi to Neon's Boke.
  • Talk to the Fist: Vents her anger at Snow White for failing to hold back Chatterbox during the facility assault by first punching her in the face.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Soda, her to-go drink after a particularly stressful mission. Having a high enough Bond Level with her will lead to her suggesting she and The Commander share one together in her interaction lines. Her Summer version also has her with a can of soda in her hand, which she'll take a drink out of during its animation.
  • Uniformity Exception: Unlike the rest of Counters, who were built by Elysion, Anis is from Tetra Line.
  • Villain Has a Point: She doesn't like Crow and her squad but admits that, during the brief time they travelled together, Crow had a point when stating that the average person doesn't care about the plight of Nikkes as long as they aren't affected by it with her having that exact mindset back when she was a human.
  • Weight Woe: She bemoans her figure in her Summer version's BlaBla chats with the Commander after she was unable to find clothes in her size while shopping earlier and the store employee practically called her a "land whale" to her face. She wonders if she needs to go on a diet, and then questions if a diet would even work on her since she's a Nikke.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She rages at Snow White in Chapter 13 for being unable to defeat Chatterbox quickly or keep it away from Counters and Modernia despite her assurances, leading to itl shutting Modernia into a feedback loop right as Marian's personality had resurfaced.

    Neon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/neon_8.jpg
Bling Bullet
Blue Ocean
Element: Fire (Normal); Water (Blue Ocean)
Weapon: Annihilation (Shotgun)JP name; Big Big Wave (Machine Gun)
Class: Supporter (Normal); Attacker (Blue Ocean)
Rarity: SR; SSR (Blue Ocean)
Voiced by: Jang Mi (KR), Rina Hidaka (JP), Xanthe Huynh (EN, uncredited)

A Nikke who is introduced into Counters as a spy working for Ingrid, one of the CEOs of the Big Three, though her actual qualifications as a "spy" seem rather dubious due to her airheadedness and overactive imagination. Her claim to fame is her obsession with "firepower" and the idea that all problems can be solved with more firearms.

  • A-Cup Angst: In First Affection, Counters needs to give Marian a new set of clothes after giving her a shower. They first attempt to give her Neon's clothes, but she complains about them being too tight around the chest, which leaves Neon inaudibly but clearly upset. When she is given Anis' clothes instead, she complains that they are too loose, which Neon responds to with an equal amount of inaudible concern.
  • Blood Knight: She loves talking about firepower and whatever lets her get more of it. It's also for this reason that she respects the Commander; in Chapter 2 of the main story, the Commander has Neon blow up the wreckage blocking a sewer drain that would let them sneak into the power station rather than risking their life confronting the Raptures head-on. Neon is impressed by this creative use of firepower, thus she has addressed the Commander as "Master" since.
  • Chuunibyou:
    • Her views and workship of firearms (her "firepower") brushes up on this trope. She starts calling the player "Master" after they suggests an alternative way to use her firepower to get around an obstacle in their first mission together, often suggests impossible uses of weapons as if sheer belief can make her outlandish scenarios reality, and during the summer event she is dedicated to somehow turn her "firepower" into "waterpower" and become a more formidable fighter by combining two element natures with her firearms proficiency.
    • Then there's her role as a spy. Whenever the subject of secrets or covert works comes up she will mention being a master spy. It's so bad thst practically every individual Counters has met knows about it. Jury is still out on if she was ever actually meant to do any spywork for Ingrid, or if Neon's role as a spy is just make belief and exaggeration on Neon's part of Ingrid's simple orders to join Counters and inform her of their combat performance.
  • Cool Shades: In Chapter 27, Neon mentions that her glasses double as a visual interface for her. After tinkering with them one night, Elegg discovers that they aren't mere ordinary augmented reality glasses; they have a surprisingly lightweight and durable design far superior to your average glasses, and whatever is running on them has extremely large storage space that is almost completely full to the point that Elegg had difficulty squeezing BOOM, a game that is only 28 megabytes big, onto them. This actually winds up raising some alarm bells to the Commander, Rapi, and Anis, as they deduce that it's highly unusual that Neon would possess tech that is way above her pay grade that even she doesn't know about.
  • The Ditz: Neon isn't especially bright and will occasionally say some very oddball things and/or perform some extraordinarily impressive leaps of logic. That said, she's a very competent fighter, and Chapter 21 onwards shows that she's not for want of tactical prowess either.
  • Fake Memories: At the start of Chapter 25, the Commander reunites with Neon and has her recount her experience during the end of Chapter 24. Neon recollects most of it but also neglects to mention being bisected and instead tells him that she was fighting Nihilister and Chatterbox instead. Anis informs the Commander that it's likely that the NIMPH in her brain falsified her recollection of the events to protect her from the trauma of a near-death experience, which is more likely to occur if the same Nikke is disabled multiple times.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: SR Neon's talk about firepower reflects her shotgun having a fire element affinity. When Blue Ocean Neon (her SSR variant) released, her weapon switched to a water affinity machine gun, and her in-game lines refer to her taking advantage of the team's sea side vacation to learn to master waterpower instead.
  • Gun Nut: Neon loves her some firepower. She takes about any opportunity presented to discuss weapons, ammunition and their uses in combat.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Neon doesn't remember being bisected by Indivilia at the end of Chapter 24. Instead, she believes she fought the entire time alongside Rapi and Dorothy against the Heretics and Chatterbox. Anis theorizes that Neon's NIMPH fabricated those memories to protect her from the trauma.
  • Mysterious Past: In Chapter 28, Rapi realizes that none of Counters ever actually questioned who Neon actually is or where she came from, as they had deemed it not important enough to find out. This, in combination with the discovery of Neon's Cool Shades, leads the other protagonists to conclude that something is fishy about Neon even if she herself isn't aware of it.
  • Naïve Newcomer: She has never been out of the Ark prior to her joining Counters, making for a contrast between her newbie personality to the more experienced Rapi and Anis. She eventually gets over this as time goes on, particularly shown by how much of a Deadpan Snarker she becomes towards Anis.
  • Open Secret: She outright tells the team she's a spy for Andersen and Ingrid. A Blablabla text reveals she's told nearly everybody the team has met.
  • Overt Operative: One of the first things she says to you is that she's Ingrid's spy.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Whenever she gets serious, whether it's about the threat before the team or about firepower, her glasses turn opaque.

The Ark

    The Ark in general
  • City in a Bottle: The Ark, as an Underground City, is surrounded by a massive screen that only shows an image of the sky, just to remind people of what they've lost After the End. Even if the populace experience some level of rain or snow here, it's all artificial and the surviving elderly that did live on the surface long ago all know it to be fake. In one of Anis' character stories, she tells a tale of when, in the past, the Big Three decided to run a one-minute ad on these very screens, giving rise to mass hysteria from the people and skyrocketed suicide rates due to the people's realities being shattered, thus prompting them to only use the screens to show the sky.
  • Cool Boat: The Admire is the pride and joy of the Ark's naval branch, a technologically advanced amphibious battleship captured from the Raptures and outfitted with the best technology in the world, making it the most powerful craft to ever grace the seven seas. There's just one problem: It's never been deployed. There's no real reason to use it since most of the war is on land, so it typically just sits in place and functions as a glorified dining hall, and even when there is an actual reason, like the Blue Water island event, it's just not possible due them not only not wanting to risk their only ship, but the costs would be too high to do so. The advent of the Kraken near Blue Water Island finally forces the Ark to deploy the Admire during the climax of Sea, You, Again, with the ship showing up at the heroes' most desperate time of need to help them repel the Tyrant-class Rapture and take it down for good.
  • Crapsack World: Humanity lost the Earth's surface to the Rapture and are forced underground to keep on living and fighting against them. Almost everyone here are living shitty lives, from the fact that almost no one living in the Ark has ever seen the actual sky or experienced actual rain and snow, the mistreatment of Nikkes due to their Human Weapon status, commanders essentially having cases of "It Sucks to Be the Chosen One" due to how little they end up learning about the fight they're supposed to lead before being thrust to the surface, to the unfavorable living conditions of those who were banished to the Outer Rim, the Ark's own badlands.
  • Fantastic Caste System: According to Anis, rich humans tried to install one based on the value of the identification chips installed in their bodies, splitting themselves into Sovereigns (the rich) and Quotidians (everyone else). However, the masses vehemently protested against such a fictitious system and the Ark Central Government attempted to pacify the rich by creating Royal Road, a luxurious shopping district exclusive to Sovereigns. The Sovereigns eventually got bored of Royal Road when they realized that they couldn't lord their superiority over the common folk and spread out across the Ark, and with the Ark Central Government banning any special privileges to Sovereigns the class system that they had attempted to create effectively imploded on itself and faded into obscurity. Despite this, there are still some rich folk who retain the Sovereign title just to fulfill their superiority complex.
  • Future Food Is Artificial: All food in the Ark is made of a mysterious product called "Splendamin", which looks like konjac and is totally flavorless in its base form. Food is made by combining Splendamin with other artificial additives to make it look and taste like real food. There are some places in the Ark where "genuine" artificial food is produced, which are considered an extreme luxury but do not taste that much different from Splendamin products.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Many, many story beats make it evidently clear that there are astonishingly few genuinely good humans in the Ark. A vast majority of people are horrifically bigoted against Nikkes and will treat and abuse them like shit before they ever consider them to be on the same level as other humans. In addition, the existence of the Outer Rim and the whole Commander program reveals that there's a massive classism issue with Ark society and that the people living good lives in the Ark are (unknowingly or otherwise) throwing other humans under the bus for the sake of the status quo. These elements added up are a big part of why Team Inherit refuses to associate with the Ark and prefers to take the war on their own terms: they just don't trust humans enough to not ruin everyone else's lives. That said, some Nikkes aren't exactly saints themselves and some humans do want to improve the lot of both Nikkes and humans. Crow in particular was once, and still is, a terrorist that had bombed a train full of people and during story events, she and her squad shot the Commander who is one of the aforementioned humans that are genuinely good. As another example, Dorothy is a Nikke who has a very compelling reason to hate humans for how the Ark abandoned her when she had done nothing but protect them from Raptures. However, that does not really excuse how she then attempts to use Counters as nothing more than meat shields to weaken Nihilister. Ether also deserves a mention as during the School Of Lock event, it's revealed that she takes part in and, to a certain extent, controls the school system of MMR vocational school which is more of a huge experiment that exposes its students to danger and uses students that fail too many times in exams as guinea pigs for inhumane experiments.
  • Last Bastion: The Ark, as far as anyone could tell, is the sole major refuge of humanity that survived the threat of the Raptures over the past 50-something years... or so would the Central Government have everyone believe, as they pointedly suppress all knowledge of the existence of Eden.
  • Martyrdom Culture: Most of the Commanders and Nikkes that fight and die against the Raptures do so believing they're committing a Heroic Sacrifice for the Ark. Nikkes are mass produced off the assembly line while Commanders are given just the barest education about the war with human armaments unable to hurt the Raptures.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Despite supposedly being a crime syndicate, Underworld Queen is more effectively a peacekeeping force in the Ark employed to resolve tensions between the Ark and criminals from the Outer Rim. It's later revealed that Underworld Queen's formation was headed by none other than Mustang, who convinced the three clans to swear an oath to bring harmony to the Ark and the Outer Rim and stop its residents from breaking out into civil war.
  • The Syndicate: The Ark hosts an underground crime syndicate known as Underworld Queen, itself a conglomerate of three criminal groups: The Yakuza-style Seimeikai, the Triad-like Peony Organization, and the Mafia-esque Hedonia.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Even with humanity decimated, chased from the surface and reduced to living in a single City in a Bottle while trying to reclaim the planet, not everyone is on the same page:
    • The "Big Three CEOs" do NOT get on with each other, Syuen being the most decidedly antagonistic of the trio towards Counters and the Commander, repeatedly blackmailing and threatening them into going on Black Ops missions for her, then callously throwing the team under the bus to save herself when things get hairy. When Syuen inserts her elite Matis team into an expedition to retrieve Heretic Fragments in Chapter 11 and then jeopardises the mission by having Laplace separate them, the Commander and Rapi from Counters and Absolute, in an attempt to secure the fragments for herself, Ingrid doesn't hesitate to ream her out for it and promises to file an official complaint.
    • Once a mind-wiped Marian re-joins Counters in Chapter 13, the Central Government quickly begins squabbling over trying to secure her for themselves, despite the team's status as Special Commandoes and having the backing of Andersen and Ingrid. The start of Chapter 14 alone has Counters having to flee to the surface when Deputy Commander-in-Chief Burningum sends the Triangle and Perilous Siege teams after them.

    Enikk
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enikk_nikke.png
Supervisory AI who maintains order and stability from her courtroom, passing judgment on all matters concerning the Ark. This gives her a position that is equivalent, if not greater than the Central Government and the Big Three.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Similar to Aria, Enikk is depicted with an unnatural gray skin tone.
  • Computerized Judicial System: As the supervisory AI of Ark's judiciary, Enikk essentially acts as judge and jury simultaneous, both passing verdicts of guilt or innocence and determining sentences, or even form new cases if she deems necessary.
  • Deal with the Devil: She made a deal with Chatterbox that allows him to corrupt random Nikkes in exchange for the safety of the Ark.
  • I Lied: Chapter 25 reveals that, though she told Syuen she was to be stripped of her position as CEO of Missilis and turned into a Nikke, she cannot actually administer such a punishment to her without fatally compromising both Missilis and, by extension, the Ark. However, she still needed to punish Syuen somehow, so she lied about it and told Syuen she could avert the "punishment" by serving the Commander until he is satisfied.
  • Mission Control: During the Rapture invasion of the Ark in Chapters 22 through 24, Enikk takes over the role of operator for Counters by patching into their comms directly and getting them up to speed on how a series of seemingly unrelated background events caused the current predicament.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: As of Chapter 25, Enikk comes to the conclusion that she can no longer follow the rules created for her by the Ark Central Government if she wants to follow her prime directive of protecting humanity. When the Commander points out the danger that this conclusion poses, she facilitates a backup plan by giving the Commander the ability to shut her down if she ever goes astray, trusting in his conscience to do the right thing if she fails to do so.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Enikk is indirectly responsible for the corruption of an untold number of Nikkes, along with the creation of an incredibly powerful Heretic but considering the fact the Raptures always knew how to find the Ark, it's very hard to blame her.

    Einkk
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/einkk_fb.png
Voiced by: Manami Numakura (JP)
An AI who runs the Simulation Room in the Ark. She is considered to be Enikk's "sister".
  • Cheerful A.I.: She's often has a smile on her face while the Commander is in the Simulation Room.
  • Hates Being Alone: One of her lines shows that she's somewhat afraid of what would happen to her if humanity were to achieve their goal of retaking the surface since they would not need to use the simulation room anymore.
  • The Reveal: The "Memory of Goddess" minigame from the Red Hood event reveals that Einkk's existence significantly predates that of the Ark itself, with an early version of her managing to find her way into Snow White's "Memory of Goddess" game. It is also strongly implied that the Simulation Room level in the game inspired her to create the Simulation Room in the Ark proper.
  • Unusual Halo: Has a halo-like structure around her and on her head.

Ark Military

    Andersen
Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andersen_fb.png

A Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Central Government Command, in essence being a superior of all Commanders, including the protagonist. Though a busy man who acts secretive about his plans to deal with the Raptures, he nevertheless works for the good of humanity.

  • Armour-Piercing Question: He shuts Doban up with one when the latter starts questioning the Counters Commander's character.
Doban: Whenever humans gain a modicum of power, it changes them.
    Andersen: Including you?
    Doban: ....
  • The Atoner: Downplayed. He hasn't done anything wrong per se but he has at one point expressed a desire to apologize to Nikkes as a whole for what humanity has put them through.
  • Baritone of Strength: Andersen's got quite the deep voice, and he's got enough brass on him to square off against, threaten and even physically assault a fellow Deputy Commander-in-Chief for threatening Counters and Marian.
  • Berserk Button: Burningum questioning his dedication to fighting for humanity is about the only thing that gets Andersen openly angry with him, sharply insisting that he drop that line of thinking. If the implications that he's actually the Goddess Squad Commander are correct, then it's very understandable why he's so angry since he's been fighting for humanity for over 100 years by this point.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up via comms just in time to stop Triangle team from coming to blows with Counters in Chapter 14, forcing Burningum, the Deputy Chief who ordered them to apprehend Marian, to rescind the order and have the team withdraw.
  • Big Good: He is the Commander's most stalwart ally throughout the story's events and while he has to look out for humanity's well-being first and foremost, he has nonetheless shown a desire for Nikkes to be treated better and for them to live as equals to humans.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Andersen's frequent meetings he conveniently refers to when the conversation is about to end are not exactly Played for Laughs, but can still veer into funny due to the fact that you can expect one to be mentioned in pretty much every scene with him and the Commander. However, after the reveal in Chapter 25 that Andersen is on life support, and after the blood transfusion at the end of Chapter 13, can only go for half an hour without being connected to Ark's primary power grid before his body starts disintegrating, the resulting implication that his "meetings" are in fact with the power cable for his life support device makes the frequent meetings a rather scary detail, and minute things like Andersen checking out the exact time he has left to spare to answer Commander's questions begin to stand out more, in a much more serious fashion.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: Does this in Chapter 13 after admitting that his and the Commander's blood is very valuable, shifting over to describing the outcome of the mission despite the Commander's protests.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: He exiles Counters to the abandoned Outpost when the power station in Chapter 2—a valuable resource in the isolated Ark's eyes—gets destroyed. In reality, this is a means to keep the Commander out of the hands of the Central Government, and besides, it doesn't take long to make the Outpost livable, becoming a popular hangout spot for Nikkes as seen in Brief Encounters, including even Pilgrims who have to stay away from the Ark.
  • Cyborg: It's not commented on, but his shirtless appearance in the April Fools event shows that he has some sort of cybernetic implant in his midsection. As it turns out, it's a connecter plug for his life-support implants.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: Threatens Burningum with this should the latter push the issue with Marian any further.
Andersen: Do you really want me as your enemy?
  • Famed In-Story: According to Diesel's Bond Episodes, her younger brother admired Andersen as a reputed model commander and wanted to be like him when he grew up, also wanting his autograph.
  • The Idealist: Downplayed: Andersen is a seasoned war veteran who had his fair share of hardship and depends on external power to survive. Still, there is a place in his heart for somewhat naive sentiments.
Andersen: I like my stories to have happy endings.
  • Living on Borrowed Time: Andersen turns out to have life-support technology implanted into him which connects to The Ark's primary power grid and can sustain him for up to 2 hours when disconnected....until the blood transfusion, which has knocked him down to just 30 minutes.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Despite the lion's share of the focus going to the women, Andersen gives them a run for their money with some shirtless shots of him in the Main Story that show his impressively ripped body.
  • Not So Above It All: Usually serious, sensible, and dilligent, but he is quite happy to give the Commander his autograph, to the point that he doesn't give the Commander time to explain why he's asking for itSpoiler.
  • Pet the Dog: Chapter 13 has him personally offering his own blood for the transfusion the Commander needed in the aftermath of the assault on the Rapture facility, despite the inherent risks involved given how valuable he admits his and the Commander's blood are. This becomes especially meaningful once it's revealed that the transfusion has significantly weakened Andersen himself, to the point that he can only last a mere half hour when disconnected from his life-support instead of his prior 2 hours. And yet he still went through with it to save his subordinate.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Compared to the Central Government and Syuen, he's always polite and makes sure to reward Counters for their accomplishments; even the exile to the Outpost for blowing up the power station in Chapter 2 is really a blessing in disguise that ensures Counters will be out of the Government's reach. That said, although he reveals key information at times, he's not open about the entirety of his plans, which keeps Counters from relying on him for help.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene:
    • In the April Fool's 2023 event, the Commander goes back to the Command Center at the end of the day only to walk in on Andersen coming out of his shower wearing nothing but a towel and jeans. He promptly dips for yet another meeting before he explains anything to the Commander, leaving the latter absolutely speechless.
    • Played far more seriously in Chapter 25, when the Commander walks in to Andersen's office to find him sitting on a bed shirtless. It is revealed that Andersen is hooked up to a life support device supplied by the Ark, which he must use constantly to survive for any meaningful period of time. He can be disconnected from it if required, but can only go for at most 30 minutes without it before he begins to suffer severe health complications.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Reams out Burningum in Chapter 14 for trying to overstep his authority and abduct Marian from Counters to experiment on and dissect her in hopes of advancing the Ark's technology.
Andersen: I respect your instincts, but this time, you're wrong. Marian is a Nikke serving under a Commando unit. You might be a Deputy Commander-In-Chief, but your reach only extends so far.
    • He also doesn't hesitate to dress down both Syuen and the Commander for their joint Engineered Heroics scheme in Chapter 18, even asking the Commander if he's letting his concern for Nikkes override his duty to protect humanity.

    Shifty
Voiced by: Yui Ogura (JP), Lizzie Freeman (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shifty_fb.png

An Operator from the Ark Intelligence Department with a chipper but accommodating personality. She serves as Counters' radio operator for most of their missions.

  • Animal Motifs: The more you look at her, the more cutesy cat ears and cat face shapes you will notice.
  • The Bus Came Back: Shifty makes her comeback in Chapter 27, being assigned as the designated Operator for Counters.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: During the April Fool's event, Andersen pranks Shifty into heading up to the surface to defeat Raptures. She handles a Nikke weapon despite being human and absolutely decimates the enemy forces with NO support whatsoever. For comparison, when the Commander tries to fire just one shot with her weapon, he nearly dislocates his shoulder. Shifty assumes Counters are helping her in the background to blow the Raptures up and that the gun is a normal human weapon, but the Commander is unable to explain to her that she is actually destroying the enemy forces with a Nikke gun and suffering no real recoil.
  • Gamer Chick: According to Exia in Chapter 8, she's a fellow max-leveled player of Final Quest.
  • Mission Control: She serves as the Commander and Counters' Operator when they're out on the field.
  • Mission Control Is Off Its Meds: She starts acting suspiciously clumsy, flighty and incompetent at times throughout Chapters 8 and 9, at one point running the team right into a horde of Raptures, which gets Anis to yell at her and accusing her of trying to get them killed. Turns out it's because it isn't Shifty, it's Syuen disguised as her as part of a petty revenge plan. Anis teases Shifty about this ever since the incident.
  • One-Woman Army: Hilariously, despite being the stick thin Mission Control, during the April Fool's event Shifty is able to take on hordes of Raptures all by her lonesome. She assumes Counters have to be helping her as part of an exercise even though they aren't.
  • Promoted to Playable: She is playable in the April Fools' Day 2023 event for five event battles. She is equipped with a submachine gun and has low damage and reload speed, but has a passive +400% Burst Gauge accumulation rate. Her Burst Skill parodies Modernia's Burst by giving her infinite ammo and a targeting reticle for 30 seconds that bestows -9547% Hit Rate but deploys a massive explosion whenever she kills an enemy with it. She also assists the Commander and Syuen halfway through 2024's April Fools' Day event, having been pranked again by Andersen to defeat Raptures on the surface.
  • Put on a Bus: Shifty no longer appears in any capacity after Chapter 16. This is partially justified by plot occurrences, such as Counters being granted freedom to execute their own missions without support from the Ark, as well as other characters serving as operators in her place during circumstances where she cannot be of assistance. She later returns in Chapter 27 when she is given the role of Counters' personal operator.

Oswald (Unmarked Spoilers for OVER ZONE and Red Ash)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oswald_nikke.png

A young military man who served as a member of the United Forces of Humanity and its successor, the Ark Central Government. Despite his otherwise mundane position, he has served a key role in the stories of the Goddess Squad throughout the 1st Rapture Invasion.

  • Affably Evil: A more charitable interpretation of his character. Even when he was telling the Goddess Squad that they would be trapped on the surface, never allowed into the Ark, he states it in a matter-of-fact manner. Even when threatened by Dorothy, he only expresses dull surprise.
  • Ambiguously Evil: He is the one who ultimately delivers the news to the Goddess Squad that the Ark Central Government intended to lock them out of the Ark from the beginning, sending Dorothy into unbridled rage at him for deceiving them and completing her Start of Darkness. However, his delivery of the news is very matter-of-fact and without loath or fanfare, calling into question if Oswald really wanted the Goddess Squad to end this way and if it's simply a case of shooting the messenger. His appearance in Red Ash further cements this ambiguity, as it is revealed that he sincerely loved the Goddess Squad and did everything in his power to help Red Hood.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After a long battle and many sacrifices, his communications give the Goddess Squad hope that their time fighting will finally be over and throughout their talk with the squad, he seems friendly enough. They even share a moment of bonding when they try to direct the squad in cooking a meal. This all makes the final reveal that the squad is being abandoned all the more gut-retching.
  • Evil Counterpart: Is shown to have not been too different from the player Commander, once upon a time. He seems to genuinely admire Nikkes and is rather open about being a huge fan of the Goddess Squad. That being said, he still carries out the Central Government's orders and keeps the remaining squad members on the surface, barring entry to the Ark and triggering Dorothy's Start of Darkness.
  • Fanboy: In Red Ash, Oswald reveals to Red Hood that he's a super big fan of the Goddess Squad and their heroism for humanity. Red Hood winds up falling asleep while he excitedly recounts several of the Squad's past operations.
  • Karma Houdini: Seeing as how the Over Zone event takes place decades before the current story, it's entirely possible he died soundly in his sleep, never facing repercussions for his actions.
  • Military Salute: Although at first confused at Red Hood's decision not to join the human refugees on the road to the Ark, he ultimately respects her selflessness and sends her off with a farewell salute while congratulating her for everything she's done for humanity.
  • Must Make Amends: With the reveal that he was a massive fan of the Goddess Squad in Red Ash, it's just as likely that he spent every day trying to make up for shutting them out. The Goddess of Victory and Wings of Victory are the closest thing to proof of his effort to keep their tales alive.
  • Unseen No More: Oswald was originally introduced as a Voice with an Internet Connection receiving the remnants of the Goddess Squad at the end of the 1st Invasion. He is officially introduced proper in Red Ash, where he winds up picking up a hitchhiking Red Hood off the road while the latter is wandering the surface.

    Burningum (Unmarked Spoilers)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nikke_burningum.jpg

Another Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Central Government, introduced as an antagonist in Chapter 14.

  • Benevolent Boss: It says a lot about the military that he qualifies compared to other Commanders like Doban, at least when he isn't going to extremes for the Ark's sake.
    • Though he hasn't given a reason for it, he sponsors the Admire, being one of the important few who supports it despite it being a money-hungry project with next to no hope for seafaring. This ultimately pays off, as during SEA YOU AGAIN, upon receiving confirmation of the survival of a seaborne Tyrant-class Kraken Rapture, he immediately gives Anchor and Mast the order to sortie the Admire to meet Helm on the surface and do battle with it, and they end up proving themselves by defeating the Kraken.
    • During Chapter 24, after hearing a report from Miranda and Poli, he asks if the two of them are all right after the big battles that happened during the chapter and to rest up.
  • Determinator: Credit where it's due, he's committed to his goal of (in his mind) bettering the Ark's tech and humanity's fighting chance against the Raptures. Even after Andersen forces him to back off in Chapter 14 (and given Burningum's appearance, he likely beat him up to do so), Burningum insists that he'll keep trying even if Andersen puts a gun in his face, with his subordinates willing to take up the cause if he can't.
  • Disappointed in You: Says as such to Andersen in their confrontation, insisting that he of all people should understand what Burningum is trying to do.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: With the reveal that the Raptures may have always known the location of the Ark, his desire to advance mankind's technology even at the cost of dissecting Marian is very much understandable.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He's the one who directed Perilous Siege and Triangle teams to abduct Marian.
  • Obfuscating Disability: He doesn't actually have that Speech Impediment he puts on, as he's perfectly able to talk normally in Chapter 26.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Asks Miranda and Poli if they're okay when they report in to him during the Rapture attack on The Ark in Chapters 22-24.
    • He sticks up for the Counters Commander when Doban starts questioning his character during the Deputy Chief meeting.
Burningum: I-In my opinion, that commander might be impulsive, b-but he is not a threat. So there won't be any problems.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Burningum is one of the better people of power in the Ark and has the wherewithal to make proper decisions to the best of his knowledge a decent amount of the time. That doesn't stop him from being trouble for the Commander and his crew, but this tends to be out of circumstance and a desire to aim for a greater good than actual malice.
  • Sinister Surveillance: The final part of Chapter 18 has him ordering Papillion to follow Counters in their new expedition to the surface, wanting to see if they have any contact with Marian. This winds up backfiring on him as Papillion winds up in Eden's "care" for the better part of the story, leading to Dorothy discovering the Ark's location and proposing a "deal" with the Ark Central Government to her benefit.
  • Speech Impediment: Burningum stutters often when talking. Revealed to be just an act as of Chapter 26.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: As the main benefactor of the Admire, his presence hosting fundraiser parties elevates the status of said events. No matter how Andersen and the Commander feel about him, he's well-respected for his work.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He's willing to do whatever it takes to advance humanity's fight against the Raptures, even if it means killing off an entire Commando unit just to get his hands on Marian and advance the Ark's technology.

    Doban
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doban_nikke.png

A Deputy Commander-in-Chief who has great disdain for all Nikkes, appearing first as a minor antagonist in Chapter 22.

  • Distaff Counterpart: He's a male Syuen, having several of her negative traits, in particular her dislike of Nikke's and being a Hate Sink. Borders on Suspiciously Similar Substitute, as he first appears just two chapters before Syuen is removed as a threat due to Enikk's sentencing.
  • Fantastic Racism: He doesn't think much of Nikkes and hates the Outer Rim residents a LOT more, to the point of trying to wipe them out.
  • Genocide from the Inside: As if him trying to liquidate the Outer Rim wasn't bad enough, a throwaway line when he's talking to Anderson implies that Doban is from the Outer Rim, making his hatred of its people profoundly hypocritical.
  • Hate Sink: Between his extreme Fantastic Racism against Nikkes and Outer Rim residents to the point of planning what's essentially ethnic cleansing against the latter, his Jerkass personality towards his own nominal allies and Bad Boss tendencies, it's clear that Doban is not meant to be a endearing character for the player and is meant to represent the worst amongst the Ark military.
  • Kill Him Already!: Following the aftermath of the Rapture invasion, Doban proposes to kill Dorothy, thinking she's too much of a threat to the Ark. While they have to admit there have been many suspicious coincidences surrounding Dorothy's appearance during the invasion, Andersen and Burningum reject his proposal, pointing out that she has shown no malicious intent towards the Ark (as far as they know). They also point out how dumb his proposal is, because harming Dorothy now would not only hinder the pact the Ark is currently making with Eden, but, worst case, cause Eden to go to war against the Ark, which they consider to be another battle they cannot win.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: He tries using the Rapture invasion as a cover for sending specially-armed Nikkes to exterminate the residents of the Outer Rim.

The Big Three CEOs

    Ingrid
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ingrid_54.png
Voiced by: Rie Tanaka (JP), Becky Boxer (EN)

Although she has the personality of a drill instructor, this is befitting of her as the CEO of Elysion, a corporation that focuses on military application.

  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Her attitude comes off as one what might expect of a military general, being to the point and domineering with everything in general. She's also taught Nikkes from her company, one of them being Rapi.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Ingrid used to own a dog named Poli who died a year prior. It is revealed that Poli was kidnapped by a discontented former Elysion researcher and turned into an Action Bomb with the intent of killing Ingrid in a terrorist attack. Ingrid was rescued by Poli (the human), who shielded Ingrid from the blast and wound up dying before being turned into a Nikke.
  • Lazy Alias: When the Commander informs Ingrid about Red Hood's return, Ingrid sets up a dummy account named "Tacticaltitac" over BlaBla to communicate classified details about Elysion's experiments with Rapi and Red Hood to the Commander. The Commander points out that the name seems too on-the-nose (with her profile descripion even being how Ingrid pronounces the word "tactical"), but Ingrid tells him not to worry about it.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Vents her anger against Syuen for interfering in and potentially screwing up the expedition for the Heretic Fragments by intentionally calling her company "Missiles", which she knows is Syuen's Berserk Button.
  • Not So Above It All: Beneath her strict facade, she also humours the antics of her more eccentric Nikkes, and would even role play with Guillotine in public.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While she initially comes off as high-strung and demanding early on, it's later demonstrated that Ingrid is one of the more level-headed people in the Ark and treats all of her Nikkes with respect and compassion not found in most humans. It's because of this that Counters takes a risky gamble recruiting her as an ally, whereupon she becomes one of their most trusted confidants.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Wastes absolutely no time tearing into Syuen for inserting her Matis team into the mission for the Heretic Fragments and then telling them to blow up the connecting bridge to strand Counters and Absolute away from the Fragments, allowing Matis to get them for Syuen first.
    • She reams Syuen out again in Chapter 18 for her Engineered Heroics gambit, calling her out for endangering the Ark without any forethought. Syuen simply blows her off.

    Syuen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/syuen.png
Voiced by: Satomi Arai (JP), Risa Mei (EN)

The snippy CEO of Missilis. Her childish looks belie her capacity for cruelty and sadism to get her way, leaving few people to empathize with her.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg:
    • When trying to convince the Commander to accept her proposal to disperse the Anti-Nikke protesters and restore Matis' reputation by performing some Engineered Heroics, Syuen actually gets her knees and begs after he refuses her first two pleas.
    • Later on, after Enikk orders that she be turned into a Nikke, Syuen desperately begs for the Commander to help her escape such a fate, which involves doing whatever the Commander wants until he's satisfied.
  • Bad Boss: Syuen treats her Nikkes poorly. Even Matis, her favourite elite squad, is regularly worked to the bone and given insufficient rest between missions.
  • Berserk Button: Calling her company "Missiles" (pronounced "Mis-si-les") instead of "Missilis" is a good way to get under her skin even more than usual.
  • Boxed Crook: Becomes this post-Chapter 24, being stripped of her CEO position, turned into a Nikke and assigned to Team Counters as punishment for her past misdeeds. Or so she thinks.
  • Break the Haughty: Even as she's hauled in front of Enikk and tried with numerous grave offenses, like threatening The Ark with her Engineered Heroics plan or several of her Nikkes going rogue and sabotaging The Ark, leading to a full-on Rapture invasion and plenty of civilian casualties, Syuen is still smug and self-assured, assuming she's simply going be fined and that'll be that...until Enikk tells her that she's not getting a fine, her punishment is much worse than that.
    • Her playable appearance in the 2024 April Fool's event shows just how broken she'd be if ever forced to serve on the front lines. No matter what she's doing in battle, be it reloading, bursting, firing, or taking cover, Syuen's panicking, trembling in fear, and looks like she's about to die of a heart attack. This is a stark contrast to her health bar portrait, which is her usual default haughty pose.
  • Bullying a Dragon: She thinks it's a good idea to mouth off to and even try to coerce Enikk during her trial in Chapter 24, 'reminding' her of everything Missilis has done for The Ark and how vital she is to it, and that Enikk had best keep that in mind when making her ruling. She learns the hard way that Enikk won't be swayed so easily, since the trial ends with her being declared guilty and sentenced to Nikke conversion.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: A variation. In Chapter 25, Enikk reveals to the Commander that her sentencing for Syuen is a lie, as turning her into a Nikke and stripping her of her CEO status would fatally compromise the Ark.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Her mind wipe of Mihara in Chapter 4 royally pisses off Yuni and breaks her heart, which only gets worse when she sees Syuen managing to cure Matis safely later on, prompting her to throw rage fits and curse Syuen behind her back. In Chapter 18, Crow takes advantage of her compromised state to get Yuni on board with a plan to pay Syuen back... which involves Yuni abducting and imprisoning her.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: After Rapi kicked her ribs in in Chapter 5, Syuen started plotting revenge on her for it. The key problem is that her idea of revenge is to get all of Team Counters killed in an ambush she ran them into while posting as Shifty, their Operator, despite Counters having proven themselves reliable and skilled enough to be promoted to Special Commandoes and The Ark being in dire need of skilled teams like them, given the otherwise horrifyingly high failure rate among Commanders.
  • Engineered Heroics: Her plan in Chapter 18 to calm down the Vapaus-related protests Exotic have whipped up, involving luring Raptures close to The Ark to have Matis take them out for some good PR for them and Missilis, even roping the Commander & Counters into helping her with it. While the plan does initially work, it later bites her hard when Enikk brings this up as part of the charges against Syuen in Chapter 24, in a trial that leads to her being forced out as Missilis CEO and sentenced to Nikke conversion...without a memory wipe first.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She's greedy, selfish, seemingly has no morals, antagonistic to everyone, and practically another villain separate from the Raptures. She sees all Nikkes as expendable, including her own. She had her Nikke Mihara's memory wiped without a second thought, which was the equivalent of killing her, and her own elite squad Matis is aware that the only reason she stepped in to make excuses for them when they screwed up was to defend her company's reputation. Despite this, when Matis gets corrupted, she goes against standard procedure and does everything within her power to stop them from getting their memories wiped and proceeds to beg the Commander for help, offering anything for the material that might be able to save them before breaking down and demanding that he save "her children."
  • Even Evil Has Standards: In Miracle Snow, she's rightfully outraged when she discovers that her own employees had extorted N102's mother out of a vast sum of money for the costs of repeatedly wiping her memory, when Missilis never, ever takes payment from civilians. She's so pissed that after her initial punishment to fire and heavily sue the offenders is called too harsh on the other end of the phone, she asks to put in a request to borrow Elysion's assassin team to murder them.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: In the aftermath of Chapter 18, the other two CEOs and Andersen read her the riot act for potentially endangering the Ark with her engineered publicity stunt to restore Matis' reputation, since it involved luring Raptures to the Ark for them to fight. Syuen simply accuses them of being jealous at Matis and Missilis' newfound success, failing to understand that they might all have more a problem with endangering the citizens with her recklessness.
  • Evil Is Petty: She tries getting all of Team Counters killed off in Chapter 9 by posing as Shifty, while also ratting out Exia to the Central Government to get her killed (though in her case it doesn't stick) as well. Why? Because Rapi broke one or two of Syuen's ribs and she thinks that getting her whole team killed is a great method of payback.
  • Flat "What": This is Syuen's reaction to Enikk not only revoking her status as Missilis' CEO, but as well as ordering her conversion to a Nikke without a memory wipe and serving the Counters squad.
  • For the Evulz: Pretty much all of her involvement in Chapter 9. Posing as Shifty, hijacking sensitive data from Counters, getting Exia killed, banning a whole keyword from the entire internet, even Evil Gloating straight to Team Counters' faces when Raptures swarm on their position, all of it for the sake of getting payback on Rapi for sending her to the hospital. Counters manages to be even more disgusted with her than usual. Luckily, she was too short-sighted to realize that despite her efforts the heroes managed to stay one step ahead of her.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Outright hated by pretty much everyone and for good reason. Despite ostensibly being on the same side as everyone else, she's an antagonist the majority of the time she shows up in the early story, constantly blackmailing the Commander and being an outright threat at times that Counters can't just shoot away due to her status. Even her own company's Nikkes dislike her, probably because they're just as expendable to her as everyone else. This includes Missilis' own elite squad, Matis, although it appears they're mistaken about her seeing them as expendable.
  • Hate Sink: Syuen is an absolutely despicable, vain, selfish, and greedy character with absolutely no redeeming qualities who spends most of her time screwing the heroes over more than the Raptures do.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Her playable April Fools' Day appearance has dreadful accuracy.
  • Ironic Hell: As punishment for her crimes against the Ark, Syuen is forced to become a Nikke, the very thing she hates the most in her life, stripped of her title as CEO of Missilis, the company that she performed so many misdeeds to try and protect, and join Counters, the team she dedicated so much time and effort trying to destroy. Even with The Reveal that Enikk lied about the Nikke transformation, she's still stuck serving Counters and doing whatever the Commander wants under the belief that doing so is what's stopping the conversion.
  • It's All About Me: It becomes very clear that Syuen operates entirely on this mindset by Chapter 9, where she tries getting Counters killed off solely to avenge a personal slight against her by one of their members (Rapi kicking her in the ribs while faking Laser-Guided Amnesia), despite the fact that humanity is in dire need of even half-decent Commanders and Nikke squads in their war against the Raptures and Counters has proven themselves skilled and reliable enough in past missions to be promoted to Special Commandoes.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Receives no punishment for the Engineered Heroics gambit she pulls in Chapter 18 and completely blows off any attempt by Ingrid, Mustang and Andersen to try point out how catastrophic her actions could have been for the Ark, accusing them of simple jealousy at Matis' success. That said...
    • Comes back in full force in Chapter 25 with The Reveal that Enikk lied about the sentence, which she cannot actually administer without fatally compromising Missilis and The Ark, so she's essentially being let off the hook again even if she doesn't know it. Of course, she IS still forced to serve Counters, thinking that doing so is what's averting the Nikke conversion, so she's not entirely off the hook.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: In Chapter 24, Enikk judges Syuen for her many crimes that threatened the safety of the Ark, revoking her position as CEO of Missilis and ordering that she be converted into a Nikke to serve in Counters, while not giving her a memory wipe. Syuen is NOT happy about this. This is Subverted, however, as Syuen doesn't realize that Enikk lied about her sentencing, as Enikk cannot actually administer such a punishment to Syuen without fatally compromising both Missilis and the Ark. That being said, Syuen is Locked Out of the Loop on this, so she still has to serve Counters in fear of a fate that can't happen.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Averted. During her trial, Enikk mentions that her good deeds for The Ark have earned Syuen some clemency...and as such, she won't be getting the memory wipe that new Nikkes usually get after conversion, so she's going to remember everything about her former life while never being able to go back to it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After treating Nikkes like trash and being a semi-constant thorn in Team Counters' side almost from the word go, along with all the trouble her team of coerced terrorists end up causing, it's only fitting that Syuen winds up being sentenced to become a Nikke by Enikk while being assigned to Team Counters as a Boxed Crook herself. However, Enikk reveals to the Commander that she can't actually punish Syuen with a forced Nikke conversion without fatally compromising Missilis and the Ark, but Syuen doesn't know this and thinks that being an Extreme Doormat to the Commander will spare her from such a fate, so the trope still applies.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: Even if the Commander has ample reason to hate Syuen, they still save her from Exotic because the latter is a threat ot the Ark as a whole, something Syuen never manages to be.
  • Make Way for the New Villains: Crow sicking Yuni on Syuen is the point where Exotic outclasses the Missilis CEO as a threat.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While "hero" is a bit of a stretch, pulling all the stops to save Matis does have some heroic rings to it even if she jumps through some rather unscrupulous hoops to do so. Unfortunately, in the process of doing so Syuen makes a massive mistake in publicly announcing the presence of Vapaus and its effects to the whole Ark in hopes of winning back some brownie points with investors, which gives Heavenly Ascension an exploitable weakness that they quickly use to spread anti-Nikke propaganda to sour already fragile tensions between humans and Nikkes. This turns into a PR nightmare for Missilis and an even bigger headache for Counters by the time they get back to the Ark at the end of Chapter 17.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Her blackmailing of Team Counters to capture Chatterbox in an illegal black ops mission in Chapter 4 comes back to bite her in the ass later on when the team receives their Rank Up to Special Commandos, with Deputy Chief Andersen explicitly mentioning that he added in a privilege to the position stating that none of the 'Big Three' CEOs could order the team around from that point on, precisely because of Syuen's earlier interference.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Syuen goes above and beyond to try and save Matis from corruption, even reverse engineering the Vapaus substance and using it to purge their NIMPH to get them back in action with no need for a mindwipe...which is then immediately used against her and the Ark in Chapter 16, with the Outer Rim group Heavenly Ascension using a proxy "John Doe" identity to whip up fear among the Ark residents by pointing out some Fridge Horror: Nikkes without NIMPH are essentially outside human control, so who's to say they won't turn on humanity after all the mistreatment they've suffered at the hands of their creators?
  • Not Me This Time: In Miracle Snow, after finding out that Anne's mother had been being forced to pay a large sum of money for the memory wipe procedure Anne needs to survive, the Commander and Rupee storm into Syuen's office, furious at what she's done, especially since the procedure costs next to nothing and is incredibly simple. Turns out, she had nothing to do with it, even noting that she couldn't care less about the near non-existent cost of giving some relatively unimportant Nikke a memory wipe. They find out that a group of her employees had secretly been extorting Anne's mother, which causes Syuen to go berserk.
  • Not So Above It All: In Eternal Memory, Rupee gives Syuen a Christmas cake as thanks for helping with Anne. Syuen as usual tells Rupee to piss off, but Rupee leaves the cake behind for her anyway. When the Commander and Rupee barge in later to confront her regarding Anne's situation, they catch her eating the cake and hastily cleaning up after herself.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Completely loses her nerve once Enikk dishes out her punishment for all of Syuen's screwups: forceful Nikke conversion.
    • Her default expression as a playable unit during April Fools' Day 2024, trembling with fear while behind cover or reloading, and too afraid to look where she's aiming at when firing her gun in a spray-and-pray manner.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • As scummy a person as she is in general, when Matis get corrupted in Chapter 12 she fights tooth and nail to try and get them cured, as opposed to simply mindwiping or terminating them, which is probably the nicest thing she's ever done to date.
    • In Eternal Memory, the Commander and Rupee manage to get Syuen to pull a favor for them despite the holidays, and although she remains abrasive as ever she somehow manages to remain helpful.
  • Promoted to Playable: Like Shifty before her, she is playable for the April Fools' Day 2024 event. She uses an SMG with low damage, slow reload speed, horrible Burst Gauge generation (unless she gets hit) and a huge spread. Her Burst skill has her calling Matis for help (with them being portrayed in art styles resembling the likes of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure or Fist of the North Star), who then rush to the scene in "Doro-fied" forms dealing damage to every enemy after a few seconds in a Big Ball of Violence.
  • Riches to Rags: Undergoes this as part of her punishment in Chapter 24, sentenced to go from the well-connected, wealthy and powerful CEO of Missilis to a comparably poor Nikke serving under Counters.
  • Starter Villain: Syuen is the very first antagonist the player faces, and is set up to be one of the bigger threats they'll have to deal with. As time goes on, though, it becomes apparent she isn't as big a fish as she thinks she is - while she's a threat within the Ark, her aims are mostly limited to just keeping and expanding her power within the Ark, whereas all the other antagonists Counters faces (the Raptures, the Heretics, Exotic, etc) want to destroy the Ark outright. Adding onto this is that while Syuen is a Hate Sink, she has a few Pet the Dog moments to show that she does have a heart, while most of the other antagonists lack any redeeming traits.
  • Stupid Evil: Attempts to kill off Counters solely because one of them kicked her in the ribs and sent her to hospital, despite humanity being in DIRE need of teams as skilled as them to, y'know, fight the Rapture that want to kill everyone in the Ark, Syuen included.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Among the CEOs. Ingrid is a stern and strict Iron Lady, yet she doesn't hesitate to throw her support behind Counters once it's clear they can produce good results in combat (plus Rapi allowing a brain scan to see how she resisted the memory wipe from Chapter 4), while Mustang is a Benevolent Boss concerned for his Nikkes' wellbeing and openly supportive of the Commander helping them better themselves. Syuen, meanwhile, considers all her Nikkes expendable with the exception of Team Matis, doesn't bat an eye in blackmailing the Commander to do her dirty work and flat-out tries to kill Team Counters in Chapter 9 as revenge for Rapi kicking her in the ribs. Deconstructed quite brutally in Chapter 24, since all of Syuen's misdeeds come back to bite her when Enikk puts her on trial in the aftermath of Exotic and Yuni going rogue, leading to a Rapture invasion and large-scale civilian casualties, with Enikk judging that Syuen cannot remain as Missilis CEO any more and must instead become a Nikke.
  • Unwilling Roboticisation: She's forced to become a Nikke by Enikk in Chapter 24 when all of her misdeeds and those of her now-rogue Nikkes (Exotic and Yuni) are revealed, with Syuen being VERY unhappy about that but powerless to reverse the ruling.
  • Vague Age: She looks pretty young for a major CEO, but it's unclear if she's actually Young and in Charge or Older Than They Look (and act).
  • Villain Decay: Syuen is the first major antagonist that Counters faces, and almost gets them killed twice within the first ten chapters of the story. She starts losing ground against them after they get promoted beyond her ability to influence, while more dangerous foes in the form of intelligent Raptures, the Heretics, and Exotic enter the story. Her sentencing in Chapter 24 takes her out of the picture as a villain, though she's still present in the story.
  • You Are What You Hate: She doesn't have a high opinion of Nikkes and treats them like trash. As of the end of Chapter 24, she's on the way to becoming one herself. Or she would be, if Enikk could actually punish her in that way.

    Mustang

Tetra Line's eccentric CEO, known for his focus on entertainment and impressively gaudy costume. It is difficult to know what goes on in his mind underneath his showmanship, but one can at least trust in his goal for "entertainment".

  • Benevolent Boss: He's the most outwardly concerned for the Nikkes' well-beings of the three CEOs and genuinely wants what's best for them, and frequently relies on the Commander's help in solving their problems or helping them better themselves. During Lion Heart, he allows the Happy Zoo squad, with the Commander tasked with helping them, to bring some of the animals from the shelter to the Surface during the shelter's downtime after the Commander explained the situation.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He may be eccentric, strangely dressed, and focused on entertainment, but he is not to be underestimated:
    • He is the only CEO to have been there since the founding of his company and the rise of the Big Three. Both Missilis and Elysion have gone through several CEOs throughout the years, but nobody has been able to replace him. And while Tetra is the smallest of the Big Three, it is still a member of the Big Three, making them one of the most powerful companies in the Ark.
    • He is responsible for the formation of Underworld Queen, who run the three largest crime syndicates in the Ark and the Outer Rim, and while they are his partners rather than true subordinates, it is made clear they will have to answer to him if they violate their oath.
    • Prima Donna, three of the most popular musicians in the Ark, work for him, with it being noted the three have so much influence on popular culture that they require direct oversight from the Central Government. Each of the three Nikkes in his Talentum squad all run their own corporations, even.
    • Even beyond Underworld Queen, several of his squads have a focus on more cloak-and-dagger work. While Elysion's top squad acts like an elite military unit, and Missilis' top squad are over-the-top, flashy superheroes idolized by the citizens of the Ark, his top squad is Café Sweety, who appear to be a group of barely competent baristas to the majority of the Ark, but are actually some of the top mercenaries and fixers in the Ark. He also created Protocol, an information gathering squad for the Central Office of Strategic Services, which includes Exia, one of the best hackers in the Ark.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Mustang is if nothing else eccentric, but he is also one of the most powerful people in the entire Ark short of the top dogs of the Ark Central Government itself and his sheer influence extends across virtually every nook and cranny that Elysion and Missilis haven't already gotten to.
  • The Cavalry: Non-combat variant, he shows up prior to Counters' expedition to the Research Base in the frozen north to offer the Commander the keycard they need to let the team into the base safely, when previously they'd not been given one despite Andersen ordering the team there in the first place.
  • Character Catchphrase: "ENTERTAINMENT!"
  • Gratuitous English: In the Korean and Japanese dubs, he peppers his speech with random English words.
  • Gratuitous French: In the English dub, he speaks in a French accent and peppers his speech with French words.
  • Hidden Depths: He is mostly a hammy, strange, but nice man primarily concerned with entertainment. However, he displays a level of compassion and care for his company's Nikkes that isn't shown by Syuen or Ingrid, and he personally turned Mary into a Nikke after Pepper killed her and kept all her memories intact, both as punishment for having turned others into Nikkes against their will, and so that she'd have a chance to atone for her human life's wrongdoings.
  • Large Ham: Raises his voice a lot in just about any dub and has a lot of stage presence, as befitting an entertainer.

Outer Rim

    Outer Rim in general
  • Fantastic Underclass: The inhabitants of the Outer Rim are all officially labelled as "Noncitizens" and "Outlaws" in the eyes of the Central Government, i.e. they are not entitled to any of the rights and protections that the Central Government provides. In fact, Outer Rim residents are met with lethal force should they try to get into the Ark.
  • Urban Segregation: The Central Government gave up on policing the Outer Rim and walled off the entirety of it from the Ark proper; any Noncitizen that tries to sneak across the wall is indiscriminately shot dead.
  • Wretched Hive: The Outer Rim is the most lawless, segregated portion of the Ark. Most of the people who live there are exiles and criminals who have no human rights. If someone from the Outer Rim even attempts to enter the Ark, they're shot dead on sight.

    Team Exotic
A Nikke squad that operates in the Outer Rim, consisting of Crow, Jackal, and Viper. Because of their different manufacturers, tropes involving them as a group are listed here.
  • Animal Theme Naming: All members are named after wild animals and are also named after carrion scavengers.
  • A Day in the Limelight: They are the focus squad in the D-Outsider event, where the Commander goes on a covert mission with them in the Outer Rim.
  • The Man Behind the Man: They—more specifically Crow—are responsible for Heavenly Ascension's terrorist activities, including the AZX train bombing and, more recently, the breach that let Raptures into the Ark in Chapter 22.
  • Token Evil Teammate: They're not simply malicious or morally dubious in comparison to other squads, their goals are outright villainous and they know it, being the ones behind Heavenly Ascension's activities.

    E.H. (Unmarked Spoilers)

Spoilers for Chapter 22!

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e_h_nikke.png

Full name Elysion Harper, an apathetic woman who is the leader of Heavenly Ascension.

She is introduced in Chapter 22.

  • The Atoner: After realizing how much danger she put the Ark in with her actions, and bearing too many injuries from the bomb, she asks Ingrid to turn her into a Nikke to atone for her crimes.
  • Badass Normal: Given that all Nikkes are women and E.H. is geared up like a military one, it'd come as a surprise in Chapter 24, "Atonement", where it's made clear she isn't a Nikke but a human. Makes it impressive that she could fend off Underworld Queen, survive the excavation bomb, and make Crow wary despite her grave injuries at the time.
  • Ironic Name: She's the leader of a major terrorist group opposing the Ark, but she shares a name with the corporation whose Nikkes are most closely associated with the Ark's military and law enforcement. Crosses into Meaningful Name when she asks Ingrid, the CEO of Elysion, to turn her into a Nikke as punishment for her crimes.
  • Uncertain Doom: In "Gateway", Chapter 22, she's last seen standing around the excavation bomb when Crow remotely sets it off, with homemade bombs that could kill her strapped all over herself no less. Later, it turns out she survived in Chapter 24, having been treated by Viper beforehand but still suffering from burns.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Exotic took advantage of her suicidal apathy over the Outer Rim residents and Nikkes being treated as less than human, subtly guiding her into taking the bomb she thought would help the Outer Rim create their own elevator to the surface. Instead, Crow forces it to blow up early, blasting a hole into the Ark that let Raptures—and Nihilister at the end—in.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Everything she did as the head of Heavenly Ascension was for the sake of making the Outer Rim better. But however much this aligned her goals with Underworld Queen's and their many crimes Crow is actually responsible for, she and her group are still terrorists for a reason.

    Sixo

A mysterious criminal who frames Moran for mass murder and drug running during the Dirty Backyard event story, toppling the careful balance Underworld Queen had established in the Outer Rim. She's also the former boss of Sugar, who was originally a hitwoman following her every whim until she couldn't stomach it anymore and pulled a Heel–Face Turn.

  • Arch-Enemy: Secures herself as Underworld Queen's, and specifically Moran's, after framing the latter for horrible crimes she didn't commit and throwing the entire Outer Rim into further disarray than it's already in.
  • Arc Villain: Unlike previous event story antagonists, Sixo is not another villain of the week and isn't defeated by the end of the event she's first mentioned in. She becomes mentioned again in passing during KILL THE LORD as a target Underworld Queen continue to hunt, and even extends her influence to the main campaign, keenly interested in the crystal region Counters are assigned with exploring. This implies there is much more in store with her in the future, both in the main campaign and successive Underworld Queen focused events.
  • Bad Boss: Thinks nothing of blowing up a lackey who fails to secure the Mist drug for her. Her callousness is implied to be part of the reason Sugar left her employ.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The Hard Mode ending of Dirty Backyard reveals Moran's destruction of Fog Hollow not only tanked her own reputation to the point people smear her group's headquarters with hateful messages, but it did absolutely nothing to stop Sixo's plans to produce Mist, as The Stinger shows the production merely changed location.
  • The Chessmaster: Dirty Backyard ends with Sixo successfully turning the Ark against Moran and leaving her name uncleared, allowing her to advance her designs against Underworld Queen at large as she attempts to gain a greater foothold in criminal enterprises.
  • The Ghost: She doesn't make an appearance during Dirty Backyard but is spoken of with great and terrible fear. Even Liveryn, who has worked with Sixo in the past and has gained extensive knowledge of the Ark's underworld through her illegal deliveries, has virtually no clue who Sixo is aside from the power they command. Shifty even notes that any and all communications that Liveryn may have made in the past month are completely untraceable.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: Chapter 28 reveals that they have a currently unknown vested interest in whatever Counters finds in the crystal region and has deployed Liveryn as a liaison using Fragile as leverage.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Sixo is a dangerous and cunning criminal mastermind orchestrating the destabilization of the Outer Rim. When Moran and the Commander go investigating, they face a fair amount of resistance before they hear she's behind everything.

Others

    Angelina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angelina_nikke.png
Anne's mother, who had given her own wellbeing up for her daughter's. She is finally met during the Miracle Snow event.
  • Despair Event Horizon: She crossed it in Anne's backstory which is why she deliberately allows the scientists of Recall & Release to trick her into paying them money, forcing her into a Workaholic lifestyle. Having to remind Anne of who she was with every visit, knowing she'd just forget her again, wore Angelina down emotionally until she couldn't bear to keep seeing her.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The Hard Mode epilogue of Miracle Snow finally gives the poor woman a break. Not only does she no longer have to pay the scientists thanks to Syuen firing them all, but some of Anne's NIMPH have bonded to her brain and granted her permanent memories that won't be erased with future wipes...including of Angelina, allowing her to begin reconnecting with her daughter again.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: For someone who's 45 years old and working jobs nonstop every day, she still looks well enough to appear as Anne's older sister.
  • Tricked into Signing: She has to work herself to the bone every day in order to pay for Anne's expensive memory wipes, though when the Commander and Rupee confront Syuen over it, it's revealed that Missilis strictly does not take money from citizens and that the employees of Recall & Release were conning Angelina all along. The Commander however felt uneasy by how simple it was to solve the problem by just talking to the CEO. His suspicion was later proven right when Angelina confesses that she already knew she was being tricked, yet accepted it because she'd rather support her daughter than to face the pain of being forgotten every day.
  • Workaholic: The episode "Her Day" in Eternal Memory shows her hopping from one job to another for the sake of paying Anne's memory wipes, the breaks in-between being spent on moving to the next place and eating mid-walk. The only time she ever stops any of this is when she's at home to rest... and then it all repeats the moment she wakes up. In truth, this was all just a way to avoid seeing her daughter.

    Chime
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chime_nikke_4.png
Voiced by: Ratana (EN)
A Pilgrim, and member of the White Knights. She, alongside Crown, travels the surface in search of valuable treasures.
  • Berserk Button: Does not like comments on her small, childish appearance, and especially any disrespect towards Crown.
  • Defiant to the End: When captured by Chatterbox and Indivilia, she refuses to give them what they want in favour of telling them they're going to die for attacking the White Knights.
Chime: "I would never betray my King."
Chime: "She will have her revenge, and see to it that your corpses hang at the city gates for the next hundred years!"
Chime: "For my King will come here personally to take your heads as a trophy!"
  • Ear Ache: Indivilia slices off Chime's ear with her tail while questioning her.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: First mentioned by Snow White in Chapter 17, her first appearance is in the Golden Ship event, before being properly introduced in Chapter 25.
  • Greed: While Snow White describes both her and Crown as money-hungry, she knows they would never besmirch their good name, and trusts them with taking care of Marian.
  • Mechanical Horse: Chime can call the White Knight's personal steed, Trombe, with the bells attached to her helmet. During Last Kingdom, Kilo recognizes it as a "T.A.V:A", or "Tactical Autonomous Vehicle: Animal Type", a precursor of her T.A.L.O.S. mech that was discontinued due to its unstable power source.
  • The Navigator: Chime has extensive knowledge about notable landmarks on the surface, which helps her guide the Commander's group to Red Hood's hometown.
  • Off with His Head!: Near the end of part 1 of the Last Kingdom event, she gets decapitated by Indivilia, and her head is sent to Crown as a "You're next" warning.

    Clay
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clay_nikke.png
The other member of Rewind, who joined shortly before the rest of the squad sans Bay broke up due to accusations of scandal. Although her cheerleading skills are underdeveloped, she makes up for it in her skills with a crowd, energizing bleachers with her boundless energy.
  • Ascended Fangirl: She is one to the old Rewind Squad, especially Bay. Her dream of joining them one day came true when she got accepted to join Rewind... due to being the only one that applied for the audition.
  • The Determinator: Deconstructed in One More Time. Due to Rewind's lackluster results at the cheerleading competition, Clay puts in a ton of extra work into practicing her routine, practicing well into the night despite a strict schedule with Bay. However, her inability to do the steps properly causes her to injure herself repeatedly, and because she's so dead set on practicing she does not give her own body time to heal and stresses herself out due to oversleeping, causing her performance to rapidly decline and falter on even basic movements.
  • The Klutz: She's clumsy and has a tendency to mess up her cheer routine, which starts to get on Bay's nerves.

    Drilley
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drilley_nikke.png
Voiced by: Ayaka Ohashi (JP)
Hammering's partner from the Hammer & Drill squad. She is deployed to Reclamation Site 01 as backup following an incident in the Crystal Region.
  • The Fettered: Drilley makes a point that as her squad essentially makes a living off of valuable minerals and rare jewels, there are much more unscrupulous ways of doing business, but the duo insist on making a living the fair and honorable way without relying on underhanded tactics. When questioned by Anis about why she chooses to follow a code of honor in a world that is very unfair and unkind to them, Drilley proclaims that she believes in the power of listening to a conscience, and that doing otherwise would be a very difficult path to live.
  • Foil: To Liveryn. Both are Nikkes who work in obsoleted fields and struggle to continue day by day operations due to a lack of meaningful work, but while Drilley believes in making an honest living, Liveryn resorted to illegal courier work in the Ark's underground, putting herself and the people close to her at extreme risk for the sake of money.
  • Jiggle Physics: Drilley is equipped with a pair of drills strapped to her back that constantly run. The vibrations from said machine cause her breasts to noticeably vibrate even while standing still.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Compared to Hammering's more casual and laid-back approach, Drilley is brash and impulsive, often jumping to conclusions and acting before thinking.

    Fragile
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fragile_nikke.png
Voiced by: Misato Fukuen (JP)
A courier from Pathfinder. She is deployed to Reclamation Site 01 after misfortune befalls her teammate Liveryn.
  • Meaningful Appearance: In Chapter 29, the Commander finds it unusual that while Liveryn wears fashionable and expensive-looking clothes, Fragile's clothes are much more worn and tacky, to the point where there's a noticeable hole in the seat of her pants. Turns out that Liveryn has been obtaining a large amount of funding from illegal jobs in the Outer Rim, a fact that Fragile is none too happy about.
  • Suicide Pact: It is revealed that after a previous job from Sixo resulted in the death of Fragile's sister, Fragile forced Liveryn to swear that if either of them ever took another job from Sixo, they would kill themselves. Needless to say, Fragile does not take it well when she finds out that Liveryn is on yet another job from Sixo, resulting in an attempted murder-suicide.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: She keeps a pen stashed in her cleavage.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Fragile is absolutely livid that Liveryn chose to work with Sixo again despite promising to each other that they would die together if they ever contacted them again. She proceeds to pull her gun on Liveryn and nearly kills her, only for Fragile to be pinned down by Counters. She eventually calms down after Liveryn admits that she was blackmailed into taking the job, but Fragile vows to follow through on the suicide pact if she finds out that Liveryn is in it for personal gain.

    Hammering
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hammering_nikke.png
A Nikke from Hammer & Drill, a squad that specializes in mining operations. She is assigned to Reclamation Site 01 in order to assist Counters with mineral recovery in the crystal region.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Always seen with a giant hammer.
  • I Will Find You: Inverted; when she realizes there's not enough time to break out Elegg and Liveryn from a crystal cluster, Hammering instead asks for a location tracker. Once received, she asks Counters to find the three as the ground around the cluster lowers them underground.
  • Losing Your Head: When Hammering's body starts transforming into a second Crystal Chamber, Rapi quickly decapitates her to save her brain from being destroyed. This manages to keep her alive, but her infection had already progressed to a point where there are still crystals embedded in what's left of her neck, preventing the heroes from being able to safely remove and preserve her brain and forcing M.M.R. and Drilley to transfer her head to a classified location for further research. Further complicating matters is Sixo "coercing" Liveryn to bring her head to them for their mysterious goals.
  • Meaningful Name: Wields a giant hammer, and belongs to a squad called "Hammer & Drill". When introducing herself to the Counters Squad, Anis points out how unoriginal her name is considering her squad's name, while Neon jokes if her squad mate's name is Drilley. Hammering's confirmation leaves Neon in Stunned Silence.
  • Parrying Bullets: While she previously failed to deflect a broken Rapture part flying towards a crystal with her hammer, she is successful in deflecting a shot from the masked woman's coffin gun. She later duels the Unknown to allow Elegg and Liveryn to evade capture and in the process deflected a bullet into the ceiling, causing part of the cave they were in to collapse and partially burying the Unknown.
  • Stepford Smiler: Hammering is the type who dislikes burdening others with her problems if possible and will pretend to be okay even in dire circumstances. This nearly costs her her life, as her insistence on pushing forward and helping everyone despite being infected by the virulent crystals causes the infection to progress enough to completely immobilize her, which would have killed her had the main team not found her in time.

    Jin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nikke_db_c922_fb_026.png
A member of the Peony Association crime syndicate, and Moran's main source of information.
  • Brains and Brawn: With Moran. Jin even describes himself as the brain of the Peony Association.
  • Foil: To Moran. He's a human and a Non-Action Guy who serves as The Informant for Peony, while Moran is a Dumb Muscle Idiot Hero Nikke who runs the association directly.
  • Friend in the Black Market: His main source of intel for the circumstances that led to the Rapture Invasion in Chapter 22 is a friend of his that joined Heavenly Ascension.
  • The Informant: His main job in the Peony Association, providing Moran with valuable intel.
  • Mr. Exposition: In Dirty Backyard, filling the Counters Commander and Moran in on what Mist is.
  • Non-Action Guy: Whenever Moran asks him for some help in upcoming fights, he chickens out, telling her that he doesn't like fighting, and is much better at gathering intel.

    K
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/k_fb.png
A Nikke from Perilous Siege.
  • Blood Knight: Shows some shades of this. When out on a mission, she's a little too eager to punish wrongdoers compared to her more reserved squad mate, D.
  • Hidden Depths: Her appearance and rather cavalier attitude may convince some people that she doesn't think too hard about her missions. During the License to Kill event however, she shows several times that she grasps the gray morality that her work often brushes up against and is capable of forming her own rational opinions on what should be done.
  • Necessarily Evil: Her conclusion at the end of the License to Kill event is basically that there is no real way to ever truly attain perfect equality and that on some level, someone is going to have to suffer for someone else to prosper. As such, she supports leaving the man they have been chasing throughout the event alive without punishment.
  • Shipper on Deck: An Outpost event has her trick D into taking a load off for the night with the Commander. Funnily enough, the KILL THE LORD event implies she's perfectly happy with sharing him as well when the Commander assumes she and D will both be assuming cover identities as his wives.

    Liveryn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/liveryn_nikke.png
A Nikke from Pathfinder, an Ark squad dedicated to courier duties. She is assigned to Reclamation Site 01 to assist Counters with pathfinding and navigation on the surface.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Despite her blundering during a life and death situation, the Commander forgives her and shows his appreciation regardless, an act that shocks Liveryn since she has never been treated with kindness by a human before. She subsequently attempts to make affectionate gestures toward the Commander during the remainder of the trip, which are humorously deflected by Rapi of all people.
  • Conspicuous Consumption: Her clothes are much fancier, newer, and better-maintained than her squadmate Fragile's dilapidated ones, exposing that she's taking dodgy jobs for extra money.
  • Damsel in Distress: Chapter 28 ends with Liveryn and Elegg trapped within a large crystal cluster. Before Hammering has a chance to break them out, the cluster sinks into the ground, taking all three of them underground.
  • Freak Out: After accidentally leading the party into several dead ends, a frustrated Elegg calls her useless for her apparent navigation skills. This causes her anxiety to spike rapidly to the point where she starts hyperventilating, causing the team to take a detour to coax her into calming down. She later explains that due to a past incident she gets anxiety attacks when she gets called useless under stress.
  • Job-Stealing Robot: Liveryn mentions that Pathfinder is desperate for work since courier duties have been largely relegated to simple machines that are more efficient and less falliable than Nikkes. These days the squad mostly gets by by taking jobs from the rich and bored who pay the Nikkes to put on grandiose displays whenever they deliver packages to add a little spice to their lives.
  • Knee Capping: When Fragile discovers that Liveryn is smuggling a bottle of crystals to bring back to Sixo, she shoots Liveryn in the leg to disable her and prevent her from escaping while the main squad deals with Crystal Chamber. The Commander then orders all limiters back on to stop Fragile from inflicting any further damage.
  • Meaningful Name: (De)livering → Liveryn.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In Chapter 29, it is revealed that she, Elegg and Hammering encountered the Unknown after being stuck in the Crystal Region underground, who seemed fine with letting them flee. However, for reasons unrevealed Liveryn was compelled to take a picture of her for her mysterious client, causing the Unknown to turn against them and attack. This ultimately forced her, Elegg and Hammering to scatter to avoid getting barbequed, making Counters' job in locating all three of them much more difficult.

    Lumi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lumi_mask_off.png
A major recurring character in Snowfield Oasis, the Mini-Game for the NEVERLAND event. A strange mass-produced Nikke who was found wandering the area near the hot springs resort adjacent to the Northern Base. For unknown reasons, she has difficulty communicating, but seems to be connected to the seven legends surrounding the hot springs.
  • Connected All Along: It is eventually revealed that Lumi is the youngest daughter of the family that originally owned the Snowfield Hot Springs.
  • Deuteragonist: Make no mistake, while you do technically play as the Commander and interact with the present day Nikkes to progress, Lumi is very much the exclusive central character of Snowfield Oasis. Much of the minigame's events involve uncovering her and her family's past, each Hidden Ending for the Nikkes unlocks a flashback from her perspective integral to piecing together the overarching mystery, and 100% Completion is required for the resolution of her character arc.
  • Dramatic Unmask: When Lumi finally learns to let her past go, she decides to remove her goggles, revealing her bright brown eyes.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Although Lumi and her once happy family experienced a tragic end that caused her insufferable pain even after being reborn as a Nikke, by sharing a new world of experiences with the Commander and the Nikkes in his employ Lumi learns that although the past cannot be undone, the lingering feelings from those memories can be overwritten with fresh experiences of happiness and wonder. Lumi resolves to bring happiness to those in the same way that the Commander and his friends brought happiness to her, and thus Lumi takes off her goggles and declares her intent to stay behind at Snowfield to care for her home. In doing so, Lumi rewrites her final legend to read "If you experience all the legends, then you will be happy".
  • Elective Broken Language: Lumi typically only answers to binary queries, and only with "Yes". She does have the ability to speak up when the legends of the hot springs are directly involved, but only in difficult fragmented sentences. She overcomes her speech impediment by the end, after she has discovered new warmth and passion among Snowfield and the ability to put her past behind her.
  • Flashback Cut: One each for each of the Hidden Endings in the minigame.
    • Mica: Lumi, Lua and Lena visit the waterfall near the hot springs, where Lumi wishes for eternal happiness for her family.
    • Emma: Lena blames Lua for hurting Lumi and abuses her. When Lumi is unable to find her sisters one night, she goes to the hot springs only to accidentally see Lena pushing Lua from the waterfall and forcing her to dangle from a rope. Lena denies knowing Lua's whereabouts, but in the cover of night Lumi visits the dying Lua to help her, feeding her soup to conceal her presence from Lena.
    • Ludmilla: Lumi tearfully prays to the hot springs for Lua to save her while Lena tries to coerce her to return home. Under the moonlight, the red glow of a Rapture's core reflects across the hot spring's surface as it screams violently before Lumi.
    • Blanc & Noir: Lumi, Lua and Lena spend time in the hot spring on their day off, where they playfully bicker amongst themselves. Lumi hopes that that happiness between them can last forever.
  • Golden Ending: Lumi's ending is the final ending achievable for Snowfield Oasis and can only be obtained with 100% Completion.
  • How We Got Here: The Epilogue reveals the circumstances leading up to the first meeting with Lumi. She was part of a Nikke squad deployed to the north on a mission, but she became terrified of the Raptures and fled alone, eventually winding up at her old home. As she tidied up the place, she began to recall her Dark and Troubled Past, which was so traumatic for her that it resulted in a Mind Switch, causing her speech impediment.
  • I Choose to Stay: After Lumi overcomes her trauma, she decides that she wants to stay at Snowfield and maintain it to continue bringing happiness to all who visit.
  • My Sibling Will Live Through Me: In Blanc and Noir's scenario, the twins suggest that the legend that says "luck will come when [redacted] enters the hot spring" might have to do with family. When they get Lumi in on their experimentation, Lumi's wording suggests that it must be "sisters", with Noir electing to be the "older sister" and Blanc being the "younger sister" so that all three of them can enter the hot spring together. This causes Lumi to react violently to Noir in particular, with it being heavily implied that Lumi has imprinted the personas of her deceased sisters on the twins, with Blanc standing in for Lua and Noir standing in for Lena. Noir manages to overwrite this perception in her second Bond event after Lumi nearly falls into the hot spring, with Noir becoming Lumi's "mother" and the Commander her "dad".
  • Once More, with Clarity: The Epilogue plays through all of Lumi's flashback sequences in chronological order with complete details, explaining how she and her family met its bitter end.
  • Sibling Rivalry: It is later revealed that Lumi was unwittingly caught in the middle of one between her older sister Lena and second oldest sister Lua. Lena hated Lua for being the object of Lumi's attachment and sought to remove Lua from the picture by any means necessary if it meant having Lumi all to herself. Lena verbally abused Lua for anything remotely involving Lumi's safety, ultimately culminating in Lena pushing Lua from the waterfall and torturing her by keeping her tied to the cliff for days on end without food. The torture eventually became too much to bear for Lua and she committed suicide in her and Lumi's bedroom, whose spirit continues to haunt the depths of the dormitory to this day.
  • Theme Initials: Lumi's sisters also have names that start with the letter "L".
  • Urban Legends: Lumi appears to possess knowledge of the seven legends that are spoken of in the texts of the hot springs and guides the other characters along to resolving them. It is ultimately revealed that she is actually the source of the "legends", based on her past life at Snowfield which ended in the destruction of her family and her premature death.
  • Walking Spoiler: Lumi is deeply integrated with the plot of Snowfield Oasis and is very difficult to talk about without spoiling the story.

    Mana
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mana_fb.png
A Nikke from Missilis Military Research. She also oversees the Rehabilitation Center in some capacity, working with the Commander to rehabilitate some Nikkes as part of the Liberation system.
  • Badass Bookworm: She's a researcher along with Ether. Being a Nikke, this presumably does not stop her from being capable of fighting Raputres.
  • Beleaguered Bureaucrat: A Brief Encounter in the Outpost shows her drinking with Brid and Yulha. They all collectively drink away the sorrows of their difficult day jobs.

    Papillon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/papillon_fb.png
Flirtatious, forward, but secretly ambitious, this Nikke serves under Burningum for her own agendas.

She is currently unplayable, debuting in Chapter 18 of the main story.
  • Butt-Monkey: Her acting skills in kissing up to people might have worked on most, but Counters, let alone Anis and Neon? Throughout Chapter 19, while the Commander and Rapi stay stoic, the two jokesters constantly tease Papillon with the reveal of their goals and infuriate her to no end.
  • Femme Fatale Spy: She fits this trope, being a woman in a sexy dress that adds to her flirtatious personality, but only acting that way for her agendas. Counters though is well aware of her being a spy from Burningum, so they let her tag along while messing around with her by not making clear about their secrets.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She wears a strapped black dress that shows off her huge Cleavage Window and underarms, and bares her legs up to a near visible view of her posterior. This is on top of her flirting and sensuous voice. Still, the glitzy appearance is in keeping with her Femme Fatale personality.
  • Professional Butt-Kisser: Yulha describes her as a "conniving floozie" during her bond story, and sure enough, Papillon often acts overly affectionate towards figures of authority. Seeing as Chapter 20 makes it clear she's aiming for a high life, it's obvious she wants connections in likewise high places.
    • In Chapter 18, "Temptation", she emphasizes the fact that she's Burningum's "one and only Nikke" that suggests he's emotionally reliant on her.
    • In Chapter 19, she's usually sweet towards the Commander, calling him "Honey" and wanting to "kiss his boo-boos away" by the last part of the chapter. This leads to Neon kissing her head, who excuses herself by retorting Papillon's brain must be damaged for her to be acting that way.
    • In Chapter 20, when Johan dismisses the Commander's ability to lead, Papillon is quick to stand up for him by saying how his reputation is large enough to merit attention from the Ark military's top brass and the Big Three.
  • Put on a Bus: Papillon disappears from the main story after Chapter 22 as she is being kept as a bargaining chip and informant by Dorothy in Eden.

    Raptilion
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raptilion_nikke.png
A resident of the Ark who believes that it is possible to coexist with the Raptures. They don't get much respect from the Commander or Counters.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The english localization can't seem to settle on Raptilion's gender, as they are refered to by both male and female pronouns interchangeably at various ponts of their side-quest. This is later taken care of in Chapter 27, where they are revealed to have a male voice.
  • Ascended Extra: Raptilion is first introduced in a set of side-quests where the Commander assists them in trying to establish communications with the Raptures in an attempt to prove that coexistence is possible, ending with said Raptures rescuing them from the Central Government's assassination squad and accepting them as one of their own even after learning that Raptilion is human. After this, they disappear from the game... until Chapter 26, where they get their first main story appearance saving Counters by sicking a MOTHER WHALE on an offending group of Raptures.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves the Counters from a horde of incoming Raptures by getting his pet Mother Whale to devour them all. Played with by how Rapi was sure that the Counters would be able to defeat them on their own, but the appearance of the Mother Whale at first created the impression that the situation is hopeless; the Big Damn Heroes moment happens when the Counters realise that what they deemed the most formidable enemy is actually a friend.
  • Dynamic Entry: And quite possibly the most epic one imaginable in the game's universe!
  • Fluffy Tamer: He manages to tame a Mother Whale while in a ramshackle costume.
  • He Who Must Not Be Seen: They are never seen in person unless it is in their Rapture disguise.
  • Interspecies Friendship: During his prolonged absence, he befriended a Mother Whale, whom he affectionately refers to as "Whaley". Raptilion and Whaley go on sightseeing trips above the surface together, to the point where Raptilion was able to sketch a topographically accurate map of the surface outside of the immediate vicinity of the Ark. He also convinced her to go vegetarian, which he believes is how her color scheme changed to white.
  • The Unreveal: He is not shown with his human appearance during his on-screen debut in Chapter 27, instead appearing in his makeshift Rapture costume.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: The believe that the Raptures can coexist with humans despite the massive amount of evidence suggesting otherwise, which is only compounded by the introduction of intelligent and truly sadistic Raptures like Chatterbox. However, as you progress down their questline, they gradually manage to find ways to communicate with some Raptures, which culminates in said Raptures rescuing them from the Central Government even after seeing that Raptilion is human. This comes to a head in Chapter 26 when Raptilion bails out Counters by unleashing a Mother Whale on an offending group of Raptures.
  • Zombie Advocate: They believe it is possible to coexist with the Raptures and tries hard to establish communications with them. It pays off big time in Chapter 26.

    Rumani
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rumani_fb.png
The sportiest Nikke of Nepenthe, always pushing for people into exercising.
  • The Cameo: She has so far appeared in Epinel and Folkwang's bond episodes and, of course, Brief Encounters involving the Fitness Club.
  • Fitness Nut: Somewhat ironically, where Epinel usually slacks off or plays around with her skateboard, and Folkwang's always busy cooling herself, Rumani is the only one of her squad that fits the image of an exercise instructor pushing people to sweat hard—even if she all but manhandles you into doing it.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: It's justified since fitness clothing is generally tight for workouts, although Rumani's top seems a size too short for her cleavage to be showing, and her Painted-On Pants are worryingly a couple centimetres past the waistline.

    Ruru
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ruru_nikke.png
A stray kitten found by Nero during the event Nya Nya Paradise. Abandoned by her owners, the event focuses on Nero's and the Commander's efforts to keep them safe and bring them into the shelter.
  • Cute Kitten: They are a recently abandoned kitten and is absolutely cute.
  • Dead Person Conversation: A one-sided example. After beating the hard mode of Nya Nya Paradise, the player will receive a message in the same group chat for the event that seems to come from Ruru judging by the broken grammar and spelling.
  • Delicate and Sickly: They are a young kitten and so are not suited to living without human support. As a result, they become malnourished after living as a stray. They end up dying due to this.
  • Heaven: Beating the hard mode of Nya Nya Paradise reveals that they end in some kind of Offscreen Afterlife with other younger kittens. They happily teach them what the Commander and Nero taught them and state that they are happy that they stayed with them until the end, and that they hope to meet them again someday.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Even when they were dying from illness, Ruru wanted nothing more than for their owners to come back for them. They die having never seen them again.
  • Shared Unusual Trait: They have differently colored eyes like Nero which endears them to Nero even more.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: Ruru dies senselessly in the event, having become too ill to have any more hope for survival. Subverted somewhat as thanks to the efforts of Nero and the Commander, Ruru at least dies having been cared for and having spent their last days happy with them.
  • Undying Loyalty: Played for drama. It's implied that the main reason that Ruru doesn't want to go to the shelter is that they are holding onto the hope that their original owners will come back for them eventually. Sadly, this misplaced loyalty might have been the thing that killed Ruru as they grew ill from being too malnourished living as a stray when they could have been taken care of earlier had they simply gone to the shelter immediately. In the end, they die waiting for their owner to come back and take them.

    Trony
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/trony_nikke.png
Voiced by: Akane Fujita (JP)
The only other member of Electric Shock, Trony is an exceptionally talented engineer whose skills compliment Elegg's technological prowess. However, the two drifted apart several years ago and Trony has since shut herself in her room. She is accompanied by T. Rony, an artificial intelligence designed to assist her.
  • Cassandra Truth: Trony always knew that the sky above the Ark was artificial, even when she was a human child, and tried to tell others that her dream was to see the real sky. No one believed her until that fateful day when the Big Three ran an advertisement on the Dome of Eternity, horrifying the Ark's residents and causing mass chaos and disarray.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Whatever happened when she and Elegg created the converter left her with deep emotional and psychological scars, to the point where when threatened by Missilis with a memory wipe, an act that is functionally tantamount to death, she resigns herself to her fate in hopes that it will erase her pain.
  • Gamer Chick: Like her teammate, she's a huge video game enthusiast.
  • Hikikomori: After she and Elegg finished building the Ark's power converter, as well as learning the truth behind the Ark's seemingly infinite energy supply, she shut herself in her room, and hasn't left it since.
  • Shrinking Violet: To say Trony isn't good with crowds is an understatement. The moment she steps outside to visit the Ark Gaming Expo, she gets cold feet and immediately wants to go home, Ark Rangers' meet-and-greet be damned.
  • Support Party Member: When she joins the team in Chapter 29, she freaks out about the prospects of heading into uncharted territory, especially one filled with hostile Raptures and weird electricity-draining crystals, so the Commander allows her to stay at Reclamation Site 01 and serve a supporting role by helping Shifty with analytical work.

The Unknown (Spoilers for Chapter 28 onward!

"Grave"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grave_nikke.png
A mysterious masked figure who appears to be guarding an entity at the center of the crystal phenomenon plaguing an abandoned city. She wields one of the Seven Dwarves, a component of the legendary arsenal crafted by Snow White.
  • Berserk Button: Referring to Anachiro as a Heretic causes Grave to respond with extreme violence, firing several explosive shots at Rapi with little effect. Her mood sours further when she discovers that Rapi has inherited the power and memories of Red Hood, causing her to abandon the heroes and flee.
  • BFG: The coffin she's wielding isn't just for show, since it's contains a gun with firepower rivalling Snow White's anti-material rifle. Coincidentally, she also calls it Seven Dwarves.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Although she isn't especially clear about her past given her speech patterns, it is revealed that she hates humans because they were cruel and tortured her, and even when she saved their lives they showed her no kindness, forcing her to kill her human masters for her own safety. She deems the Commander "not a human" because he does not hurt her nor is mean to her.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Similar to Dorothy she has a beef with humans and does not trust them, calling them quick to turn when they get the chance. The Commander manages to gain her trust by having his Nikkes rescue her after she is pinned under a heap of crystals, which causes her to change her tune.
  • Name Amnesia: She has long since forgotten her name, if she ever had one. After the Commander unsuccessfully attempts to give her a name, she decides to call herself "Grave".

Historical Characters

    Freesia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/freesia_nikke.png
A human girl that Red Hood saved from a Rapture attack on a refugee camp during the 1st Invasion.
  • Ambiguously Related: Though a child, she shares a few traits with Rapi such as having straight and long brown hair (albeit a shade darker), a calm attitude that she can drop for a few snide remarks, and the same voice actor. Her dream is to be a Nikke, though at that point, there's no telling whether or not she is Rapi's previous identity, even with Rapi's appearance as a mass-produced Nikke in the Hard Mode ending.
  • Deadpan Snarker: As steady-sounding as she had been talking about how her parents died, she's not impressed by Red Hood's sloppy handwriting when the latter autographs her gloves.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Freesia mentions to Red Hood that her mother and father died of illness some time ago. However, she's not too upset about it because they were able to share cherished memories together up until their last breaths, giving her a form of closure.
  • Fangirl: Like many, she adores the Goddess Squad and asks Red Hood to sign her gloves, which makes it significant because it's a first for the bombastic sniper. She also tells Red Hood that they inspired her to pursue her dream of becoming a Nikke.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: For someone so little and without her parents, she's well-adjusted to the wartorn world.

    The Legendary Commander
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goddess_commander_nikke.png
A dashing young man who lead the very first official Nikke team, the legendary Goddess Squad. Known to the world for his unmatched tactical prowess and leadership skills, he is the ultimate role model for all modern Commanders. However, during the 1st Invasion, he suddenly disappeared, his ultimate fate shrouded in mystery.
  • Authority Sounds Deep: The Legendary Commander has an impressively deep voice and has the commanding skills to back it up. Curiously, it is nearly, if not totally identical, to how Andersen sounds in the present day.
  • Badass Longcoat: To distinguish his appearance from your standard run-of-the-mill commanders, he sports a large trenchcoat draped over his shoulders that constantly flows in the wind.
  • Brutal Honesty: Whenever he gets serious, he tends to cut the crap and lay it on without mincing words.
    • When Dorothy joins the squad and tells him that her dream is to make everything go back to the way they were, he simply informs her that they've long passed the point of no return. In exchange, he tells her that she can instead direct her rage at a stolen past towards the Raptures.
    • Frustrated at Liliweiss wasting time to grieve at a proclaimed memorial site for the first Grimms model, the Legendary Commander tags along and threatens to burn the place to the ground. When Liliweiss is caught off guard, he tells her to get herself together and stop being attached to someone she barely knew and who died of causes completely out of her control.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his... almost childish personality, he is known as the "Legendary Commander" for a good reason.
  • Canon Character All Along: It's not-so-subtly implied that he's Andersen in his youth, and that the man we see in the game proper has had his life extended thanks to groundbreaking Ark technology. This has yet to be fully confirmed though, and his shades and hat obscure his full appearance.
  • Cool Shades: The Legendary Commander is never seen without his pair of super snazzy aviators.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: During a Lost Relic cutscene in Red Ash, he tells Liliweiss to stop blaming herself for the death of the first Grimms model Nikke, as it was something out of her control, even threatening to burn down the flower field she frequents to mourn, noting she's always in a funk upon her return. He relents after Liliweiss promises to never visit it again, on the condition that he doesn't repeat her behavior when the Goddess Squad members eventually die. Instead, he tells her he'll visit their graves every year to mourn, and she'll have to make sure not to die on him if she doesn't want that to happen, promising to do the same in return.
  • Joke Character: When asking Snow White why she didn't make the Legendary Commander playable in the Memory of Goddess minigame, Red Hood guesses it's because his pathetic fighting skills would turn him into this.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Liliweiss and he seem to have this relationship instead of simply being subordinate and boss. There are many instance in the Red Ash event where we get to see how close they are, one such example is from one of the brief encounters named "First meeting". It shows the time when Dorothy was recruited into the Goddess Squad and for whatever reason, the Legendary Commander appears to hug or arm locked Liiweiss only for her to break out of the Legendary Commander's "Mecha Destructer" with no effort but enough for him to remark that it "feels like she tore his arm out of the socket" (Lilith is, by the way, WAY stronger than a modern Nikke and far more stronger than an average human). Dorothy even lampshade this by saying that this is not what she had imagined how they would be.
  • Non-Action Guy: Like the Commanders that followed in his footsteps, he leaves the fighting to his Nikkes.
  • Not So Stoic: Being the Legendary Commander doesn't mean going without quirks.
    • At the start of the prologue's mission briefing in Red Ash, he addresses Goddess Squad... then suddenly expresses his dissatisfaction over the title, feeling like no one saw the only man in a squad full of "goddesses" when they made the name. Liliweiss then reminds him to continue the briefing.
    • When the Goddess Squad was assigned to take back the Lift, he wore a spacesuit but since he always wanted to wear one, he was so excited that he "couldn't sleep" the night before their mission.

    Liliweiss
Voiced by: Yukari Tamura (JP), Tamara Fritz (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/liliweiss_nikke.png
A Nikke prototype who served as a co-leader of the Goddess Squad alongside the 1st Commander. She is known for her sociable, yet captivatingly perceptive and intelligent personality, and as a prototype she additionally exceeds the rest of the Goddess Squad in raw power. She tragically perished during the 1st Invasion, leaving Dorothy to lead the remnants of the Goddess Squad in her wake.
  • Affectionate Nickname: "Lilith" for short.
  • Bookends: OVER ZONE begins with a pre-recorded message from Liliweiss to the remaining members of the Goddess Squad. The last Lost Relic found in Red Ash shows her recording it.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Delivers two of those to the same person in amusing ways:
    • After being told by Scarlet that she would only join the Goddess Squad if they could beat her, Liliweiss steps up to the plate and wallops Scarlet in a single blow, instantly KO'ing her. The Legendary Commander sums it up thus:
"Uhuh... Mecha Destructor is so scary..."
    • Liliweiss humors Scarlet with a rematch after the latter proves to be a Sore Loser, claiming she was not mentally prepared to fight during their initial meeting. Even with Scarlet ready to fight, the result remains the same: Liliweiss uppercuts Scarlet so hard she lodges the latter in the ceiling.
Dorothy: Yikes, look at her legs dangling.
  • Desecrating the Dead: At the end of "White Memory", Snow White discovers that Liliweiss's head has been forcibly ripped from her corpse by a Rapture attack, causing her to have a full-on mental breakdown.
  • Doomed by Canon: She is one of three members of the Goddess Squad not present in the current day besides the Legendary Commander and Red Hood. Considering that OVER ZONE makes a point of mentioning that she's dead, it's not hard to figure out what happens to her by the end of Red Ash.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: She has sparkly, star-shaped pupils.
  • Game-Breaker: In-universe, this is Snow White's explanation as to why Liliweiss isn't playable in the Memory of Goddess minigame.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: The (currently unnamed) first Grimms model Nikke. A Brief Encounter in Red Ash reveals she was built based on Liliweiss, but due to missing adjustments during her creation, she died being unable to handle the physical strain. Liliweiss partly blames herself for her death, so she frequently visits the flower field where they last talked to each other.
  • Megaton Punch: She immediately delivers one to Scarlet after Scarlet agrees to join if Liliweiss can defeat her. It's strong enough to knock her out unconscious. When Scarlet later demands a rematch, Liliweiss delivers a single uppercut that's so strong, it embeds Scarlet in the ceiling.
  • Reforged into a Minion: There's a heavy implication in OVER ZONE that she was converted into the Rapture Queen.
  • Super Prototype: The first Nikke and easily the strongest, easily outclassing the rest of Goddess Squad - who all fit this themselves in their own right. This has a fatal drawback, however; as her design was not made with longevity in mind, unlike models built after her, Liliweiss's body begins to slowly degrade over the course of the 1st Invasion.
  • World's Best Warrior: It is repeatedly stated that Liliweiss is bar none the most powerful Nikke of the Goddess Squad. It is noted that she is never seen actually wielding any sort of weapon and her arsenal is so utterly advanced that not even a Gadgeteer Genius like Snow White can comprehend it; additionally, according to Rapunzel, Scarlet has never beaten Liliweiss in a fight.
  • You Are in Command Now: After she and the Legendary Commander are being called into a meeting with the Central Government, she appoints Dorothy as leader of the Goddess Squad while they are absent.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: In Red Ash Story 2, Liliweiss hints that this is the cost of her being a Super Prototype meant to be effective in the short term. While the Legendary Commander says she has about two centuries left to live, she believes this isn't the case, and starts understanding how Red Hood must've felt about her impending death.

    Pinne
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pinne_nikke.png
Voiced by: Emi Lo (EN)
One of the mass-produced Nikkes who fought alongside the remnants of Goddess Squad in the final stages of Project: Ark Guardian. She features in the event OVER ZONE.
  • The Corruption: Falls prey to it after destroying a massive Rapture all by herself, holding on just long enough to beg Dorothy for a Mercy Kill.
  • David Versus Goliath: The Rapture she took on was five times her size and vastly more powerful, but Pinne still managed to kill it. Shame she was corrupted in the process.
  • Doomed by Canon: As she doesn't physically appear in the present day at all, either living in Eden with Dorothy or on the move with Pioneer, it's not hard to figure out from the moment Pinne turns up that she's not making it out of OVER ZONE alive. Sure enough, she's dead before part 1's finished.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: She didn't go gently, taking on a incredibly powerful Rapture as a mere mass-produced model and winning to help protect the Ark and Dorothy, only dying thanks to being corrupted in the process.
  • Genki Girl: For someone who's only a mass-produced Nikke who understands she doesn't have the same life expectancy as that of Goddess, she's upbeat, smiles a lot, jokes sometimes about her impending doom and even isn't as fazed by the human corpses she sees as Dorothy was when scrounging for food.
  • Helpful Hallucination: To cope with her death, Dorothy spends most of Story II hallucinating Pinne's presence, acting as if she was still among them while dodging any attempts to remind her otherwise. The rest of Goddess Squad are naturally concerned about her condition but ultimately decide to let it play out, fearing the potential consequences it may have for Dorothy's mind should they do or say anything that could make "Pinne" disappear. Sure enough, it's when the hallucination ends after Dorothy comes to terms with Pinne's passing that Dorothy begins her path to becoming the ruthless and manipulative Nikke she is in the present.
  • Heroic Willpower: Clings to her sense of self and fights The Corruption long enough to beg for and receive a Mercy Kill from Dorothy.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She volunteered to participate in Project: Ark Guardian because it would give her a chance to fight alongside her heroes, the Goddess Squad.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Pinne helps Dorothy find her path after the burden of leadership becomes apparent, helping guide her through daily life on the surface, serve as a voice of reason for her and the rest of the Goddess Squad, and ultimately remind them of why they still continue to fight. So when she ultimately dies, Dorothy doesn't take it well. At all.
  • Mauve Shirt: Of the many mass-produced Nikkes seen in present day, Pinne is the first of her kind to have a central role in any story, accompanied by a minorly changed Product 23 sprite with the visor removed. She ultimately is given a coup de grace by Dorothy before she fully falls to Rapture corruption.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Single-handedly defeats a giant Rapture that had been attempting to flank Dorothy while she was fighting off another raid. When Rapunzel and Scarlet observe the aftermath of the fight they're both stunned that she accomplished such a feat. Unfortunately, doing this exposes her to Rapture corruption.
  • Posthumous Character: She dies at the end of the first part of OVER ZONE, having fallen to Rapture corruption and pleaded Dorothy to kill her before she turned. Dorothy continues to hallucinate Pinne's presence throughout Story II, having undergone Sanity Slippage and needing a way to cope with her death.
  • Sole Survivor: The only one of her fellow mass-produced Nikkes to survive the fateful Rapture attack that wiped out the outpost's food stores. She doesn't last long by the end of the first part of the event.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Throughout OVER ZONE, she's a kind, chipper, thoroughly helpful and inspiring presence for Dorothy, helping her come to grips with The Chains of Commanding, learn to rely on others to help fix unexpected problems and regain hope in the mission's success when she's in Heroic BSoD mode. So, naturally, she dies at the end of part 1 to send Dorothy tumbling over the Despair Event Horizon all over again, as there was no way she'd become the person she is in the present day with Pinne there to mellow her out.
  • Uniformity Exception: Pinne looks like every other Product 23 Nikke... except she doesn't wear her visor, allowing her eyes to be visible, and she has a distinct pink gold crystalline necklace. Said necklace eventually becomes a Tragic Keepsake for Dorothy, worn as a hair accessory on her battle armor.

    Rose
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rose_nikke.png
Scarlet's older sister and a fellow specialized mass-produced unit from the Melee Squad. She tragically perished prior to Scarlet's recruitment into the Goddess Squad.
  • The Ace: Considered the best Nikke of the Melee Squad, becoming it's leader and most likely candidate to survive until the end according to their commander.
  • Always Someone Better: To Scarlet, winning over 900 duels with her and only drawing 10, with Scarlet never having one single victory over her to her name. Until the end of New Year, New Sword, where she finally surpasses Rose...while they're fighting to the death.
  • Anti-Villain: When confronted by the truth behind the Melee Squad, learning that only one of them can survive, Rose decided to discard her ideals of protecting humanity in order to protect her sister Scarlet.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Like any good sister, her first concern is protecting Scarlet. Darkly deconstructed by the end of New Year, New Sword where this instinct drives her to turn against her squad and kill her commander once she learns that There Can Be Only One, intending for it to be Scarlet.
  • Cain and Abel: She becomes the Cain to Scarlet's Abel, but only to save her life once she finds out the true purpose of the Melee Squad.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After learning the truth of the Melee Squad was created (sending them on increasing more dangerous missions until only one member remains to be turned into a Grimms model Nikke), Rose decided to kill her commander.
  • Determinator: She manages to overcome the built-in limiter that stops Nikkes from harming humans and kill her commander by putting a red blindfold on and forcing her mind to think he's a Rapture.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Rose shares her dying moments being embraced by Scarlet after impaling herself on Scarlet's blade.
  • Die or Fly: She forces Scarlet, who until then had been Always Second Best to her in combat, into a Duel to the Death so she can finally surpass Rose and survive in her place. It works.
  • Doomed by Canon: As Scarlet is the only Nikke in the present to specialize in melee combat, it's easy to guess what Rose's ultimate fate is prior the the events of the main story. New Year, New Sword reveals Rose died by Scarlet's hand after the former killed their squad's commander in an act of rebellion.
  • Fairytale Motifs: Mirroring her sister Scarlet, Rose is named after the character Janghwa from the Korean folktale Janghwa Hongryeon jeon.
  • Necessarily Evil: When confronted by Scarlet after killing their squad's commander, Rose declares herself a traitor to humanity, and challenges her sister to a Duel to the Death, threatening to kill even more Nikkes and humans if Scarlet doesn't stop her.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to her sister Scarlet's Red Oni. Contrasting her sister's serious attitude, Rose is carefree and outgoing, characteristics Scarlet would adapt in the present.
  • Suicide by Cop: After killing her commander and resisting squadmates, Rose challenges Scarlet to a Duel to the Death to see which of them is worthy of living. In reality, Rose never intended to live after what she had done, and when Scarlet disarms her and puts her blade to Rose's torso, Rose finishes the job and pulls the blade into her core, fatally wounding her.

Eden

Due to their introduction happening late in the main story, spoilers up to Chapter 21 are unmarked. You Have Been Warned!

    Eden in general
Eden is a futuristic, remote settlement where humans and Nikkes coexist as equals, in contrast to the master-slave dynamic that defines the Ark's human-Nikke interactions.
  • Doesn't Trust Those Guys: The inhabitants of Eden despise Ark citizens for being "fools", "backstabbers", and "weaklings who can't make the cut in reclaiming the surface". Hard to blame them, considering how much of a shithole Ark society and government is under the surface.
  • The Exile: Many of the residents are former Ark citizens who left the underground city for one reason or the other.
  • Hidden Elf Village: Like its namesake, Eden is a paradise compared to the cramped Ark where humans and Nikkes live in harmony, and is located far from the reach of the Ark's network of elevators, and is furthermore concealed with optical camouflage technology.
  • Invisibility Cloak: It has been shielded with an optical camouflage so that various pesky factions, particularly the Ark and the Raptures, don't come knocking on their door.
  • Outcast Refuge: Eden is a haven for Nikkes from the discrimination that is endemic to Ark society, as well as for those of Ark's human citizens who have had enough of the Ark government's moral corruption.
  • Tomorrowland: This place is well beyond anything that the Ark's brightest can make in scientific and technological advancement, many of which are Cecil's brainchildren.

    Johan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/johan_nikke.png
Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa (JP)
A cold-hearted and efficient Commander who defected from the Ark and now works for Eden. He seeks to reclaim the surface from the Raptures, no matter the cost. He is met in Chapter 19 leading Team Inherit against Counters. Lost Relics found during the campaign reveal that his real name is Jonathan Cross, and that he was 28 when he earned the nickname New Hope.
  • The Ace: Physical enhancements aside, Johan's tactical prowess far exceeds that of any typical commander, much less the Commander himself. Nihilister's Investigation Story has him reveal that he used to be a star commander back at the Ark a long time ago before he defected, and he now believes that he can teach the Commander a thing or two about leading Nikkes in battle. It is even revealed in Chapter 29 that his exploits were so illustrious that the Ark designed special communication equipment just for him.
  • Artificial Limbs Are Stronger: Thanks to Eden's advanced technology, Johan has been imbued with cybernetic enhancements that give him Nikke-tier strength, allowing him to manhandle the Commander and destroy Raptures single-handedly.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He has a massive chip on his shoulder regarding the Ark, or at least whatever occurred while he was still a part of it. Dorothy hints at it when she reveals her scheme to him, although she does not elaborate further. Chapter 21 reveals he was arrested after his last campaign, charged with treason and imprisoned by the Central Government.
  • Defector from Decadence: His illustrious career abruptly ended when an unspecified mission left him with severe injuries and falsely accused of treason against the Ark; between that betrayal and the wretchedness of Ark society, it's no wonder that he ended up defecting to Eden after he somehow escaped.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Johan's introduction to the plot has him mercilessly disparaging the Commander's strength and goals before attempting to inflict Disney Villain Death on him. It's not until they team up for the Nihilister operation that he sees the Commander's strength of conviction come to the forefront and make up tenfold for his lack of tactical or physical ability, whereupon Johan reevaluates his opinion on him and concludes that he and his team are lives worth saving when Nihilister forces his hand.
  • Foil: To the player Commander, having been a lauded and famous Commander himself in the Ark years prior to the story, and a tragic incident prompted him to flee to Eden where Nikkes and humans are treated as equals. Whatever happened left him jaded and cynical in comparison to the Commander's ever present optimism. While Johan is a Cyborg Super-Soldier and tactical genius, the Commander is, as far as we know, still a normal human and not particularly gifted; instead, he perseveres through sheer Heroic Willpower and empathy for Nikkes. Johan's interactions with the Commander eventually work out his good side and convince him to save Counters, perhaps seeing some of his old self in the young man.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Whenever Johan is visibly furious, his expression turns dark, causing the piercing glow of his blue eyes to become evident.
  • Guttural Growler: Johan's voice is low and rough.
  • The Mentor: Being a former commander of the Ark who's got the years and skill, he ambivalently becomes one to the Commander once they join together for the hunt on Nihilister, then settles into the role in Chapter 21 by teaching him how to repair the cannons and foraging in the wild.
  • Mentor in Sour Armor: Johan's not the nicest guy in the world and he's got a tiny bit of an attitude problem after what the Ark put him through to make him leave in the first place, which reflects in his initial attitudes towards the Commander. He eventually learns to soften up once he sees the Commander and his team in action, and gets around to teaching the Commander several tactical tricks and field skills to improve his effectiveness on the battlefield and help cover his team's weaknesses.
  • Not So Stoic: He's a stone-faced guy with a chip in his shoulder, which makes the moments that break his composure all the more funny.
    • When he turns off communications with Cecil for a private talk with the Commander in Chapter 20, he ends up going a lot longer than he expected. Once he reconnects, the scientist's rebukes are one pitch away from shouting at him for his mistake, repeatedly knifing the grimacing, speechless Johan with her words.
    • His icy demeanor breaks once when the Commander asks for his autograph, causing him to hastily leave the scene in a noticeably flustered state.
  • Older Than They Look: Johan looks like he'd be at most a few years older than the Commander, so it comes as a surprise to learn that he's been around since the Second Surface Reclamation Campaign, and is now 88 years old as of the present day. While his hair has greyed, he has barely any wrinkles.
  • Old Soldier: As New Hope, he took part in the Second Surface Reclamation Campaign... which was over sixty years ago. Age hasn't slowed him down much, though it likely has a lot to do with his augmentations.
  • Red Baron: He was called New Hope during his time at the Ark, with the Counters Commander, Anis and Rapi all revering him for his contributions to the war effort, primarily through suggesting and pioneering the use guerrilla war tactics against the Raptures.
  • Self-Deprecation: When Neon, Anis and Rapi all fangirl over him after learning who he used to be, Johan shuts them all down and insists he's not worthy of their respect, because everything he accomplished has long since faded to nothing.

    Cecil
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cecil_nikke.png
Voiced by: Chika Anzai (JP), Brianna Knickerbocker (EN)
The lead scientist of Eden's Central Research Facility, responsible for the advanced technologies it fields, including Nikke creation and the optical camouflage hiding Eden. She makes herself known in Chapter 19.
  • Defector from Decadence: A throwaway line by Dorothy in Chapter 24 when she visits the Missilis Military Research lab reveals Cecil was formerly a part of it.
  • For Science!: In Chapter 21, she warns the Commander about the risks of revealing his blood's unique quality to make Vapaus to people. When he pushes for her to help make it though, she admits that she's too interested not to try anyway, and eventually creates a Vapaus bullet.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She's the one responsible for creating the large-scale optical camouflage hiding all of Eden, notably something that the Ark would have killed to have. She also successfully replicated Vapaus after the Commander donated his blood despite the dearth of information there was on it.
  • Mission Control: For Chapter 20 and onwards, she replaces Shifty as an Operator to Counters and Inherit.
  • Non-Action Snarker: She's rather serious most of the time in her capacity as a scientist and radio operator for the teams out on the field, though she's got a bit of a dry mouth. At one point in Chapter 20 when Johan turns communications off, only to take too long before reestablishing connection, Cecil hurls one sarcastic insult after another that render Johan quiet and cringing.
Cecil: [frowning] You call that "a moment"? Seems you have a rather loose definition of what a moment means...
    Johan: ...!!
Cecil: [grows angry] Has being out in the field warped your perception of time? Are you out there moving at light speed without me knowing? If not, then pray tell, what exactly possessed you to go dark for so long?
  • Secret-Keeper: As one of the only people who has had the opportunity to work with the Commander's blood, she is the only other person besides the Commander himself who is aware that the Commander's blood can be used to create Vapaus. She warns the Commander several times about the danger of letting this information go public, whether on purpose or otherwise, as his blood makes him an extraordinarily valuable asset and if anyone were to find out it would be likely that he'd be turned into the Ark's guinea pig for the rest of his life.

    Team Inherit
A Pilgrim team of Nikkes affiliated with Eden and work under Johan's command. See their members—Dorothy, Harran, Isabel, and Noah—on this page.

The Raptures

    Raptures in General
  • Admiring the Abomination: There is a sidequest chain involving a person named Raptilion, who views the Raptures as akin to a fascinating animal species and wants to spread Rapture appreciation to others. The Commander winds up being roped into their pro-Rapture antics, including donning a homemade Rapture camouflage to blend in and interact with Raptures. At the end of his questline, he is about to be arrested by Ark Central Government forces for colluding with Raptures when he is suddenly saved by Raptures despite his cover already being blown. He proceeds to ride off into the sunset with his new Rapture friends, with his final message to the Commander having him wondering if Raptures really are the enemy of humanity.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: They want nothing more than to kill every last human and Nikke on Earth.
    • Subverted in a side quest series with a human that nicknamed himself "Raptilion." He's a blogger incredibly interested in Raptures and puts together a shoddy Rapture costume before heading to the surface. At first this seems a case of Too Dumb to Live, but he surprisingly manages to mimic Rapture noises and movements close enough for them to not attack him, and is able to replicate this by giving the Commander a functional costume as well. He sees the Raptures as his friends just because they don't attack him while in costume, which still doesn't sound sane of him. However, when a team of Nikkes is sent to capture him for being sympathetic to Raptures, those same Raptures he had been hanging out with actually rescue him despite his costume being trashed and leaving his human body plainly viewable. In his final transmission before he rides a Rapture out of communication range, he tells the Commander that the Raptures no longer attack him despite his broken costume, and wonders if it was a lie that Raptures were the ones originally aggressive to humans.
    • Scarlet's Bond episodes reveal that, should Raptures come across an unarmed human, they will attempt to take them alive so long as they do not fight back. Why they do so, and what happens to those they capture, is unknown, and they will attempt to kill any Nikke they find, regardless of whether they are armed or showing aggression.
  • The Assimilator: The Raptures have "Material H", a strange substance that can convert compatible parts of any captured Nikke into more of itself and is used for Heretics and their equipment. The Rapture have an entire facility dedicated to 'producing' more of it.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Shooting a Rapture in the core inflicts a Core Hit and deals much more damage, indicated by a red number appearing.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: The Raptures are the main antagonistic force in the story, being human-killing machines that want exterminate what's left. They are lead by Heretics, Nikke-like androids who want revenge against humanity, and above them is the Rapture Queen who controls all Rapture operations.
  • EMP: Alva Particles are a type of electromagnetic interference particle that is predominantly spread by Raptures. At surface level concentrations they typically interfere with communications and need to be dispersed before surface operation teams can establish contact with the Ark. At extremely high concentrations, however, Alva Particles can have EMP-like effects, causing electronics to spontaneously fail and directly impairing or disabling Nikkes.
  • It Can Think: The heroes discover first-hand that the Rapture are not the mindless beasts they had been seen as for a long time. Their first official mission results in them encountering Raptures operating a human power plant, demonstrating human-like intelligence, and they soon run into Chatterbox, a powerful Rapture who is not only intelligent but can also speak human language.
  • Mecha-Mooks: The bulk of the Raptures' mechanical hordes are rather easily disposable, though in large numbers they can pose a credible threat.
  • Mechanical Monster: The Rapture hordes are occasionally joined by a high-class Rapture, which serves as a stage boss and is both powerful and monstrous in appearance.
  • Mind Virus: It is revealed in Chapter 12 that this is how Rapture corruption works, by injecting malicious code into a Nikke's body that hijacks the NIMPH in their brains, forcing their brain to involuntarily fire off neurons against its will and effectively becoming mind-controlled by the Rapture. Rapi discovers that she is immune for the same reason she is immune to memory erasure: since the NIMPH in her brain was destroyed by Vapaus, she cannot be corrupted.
  • Multiple Life Bars: Major boss Raptures have several health bars overlaying one another. Luckily, Cognizant Limbs is in effect, where attacking a boss part not only depletes boss health, but destroying a part deals massive bonus damage to the boss's health gauge.

    The Rapture Queen
The leader of the Raptures and Heretics that wages war on humanity.
  • Arch-Enemy: To all of humanity, but Snow White and the remnants of Goddess squad (that have reformed into Pioneer) in particular are insistent on slaying her. Snow White even hunts her down all by herself with little to no aid because she doesn't believe anybody else is up to the task. Red Hood is the only member of Goddess squad with enough clarity to accept their time has come and gone, and leaves a parting message to her friends that it's time to let a new generation take over so they can unite against their common enemy, ending this conflict once and for all.
  • Big Bad: Thus far the clearest hint at an overarching antagonist, although as of yet the Ark's inane politics have proven to be the most consistent obstacle in Counters' way.
  • Canon Character All Along: The end of Snow White's White Memory text adventure in the OVER ZONE event heavily implies that the Rapture Queen is Lilith, the former leader of the Goddess squad, whose head and brain were stolen from her Nikke body. The trauma of seeing this made Snow White undergo a Mind Switch, losing all memory of the incident until she recovered her archived recollections sometime later. Lilith's coffin is shown to be sealed again in scenes that take place after this occurs, hinting that Snow White covered it up to spare her squadmates the pain of knowing what had happened, and explains her solitary pursuit of the Queen in the present day.
  • The Ghost: We have yet to see her, or it. Whoever or whatever the Queen is, the only thing that's important at the moment is understanding they desire the extinction of mankind.
  • Manipulative Bitch: The Memory Of Goddess bullet hell minigame's final level plays a cutscene that reveals the Queen can speak to and influence Nikkes through Rapture corruption, and she tricks Cinderella into becoming one of her agents by telling her Nikkes that look like her are actually Raptures in disguise. Cinderella's ensuing attack on Goddess squad at the Lift single handedly destroys humanity's chances of reclaiming the surface, and they're forced to retreat underground in the Ark and thus setting the entire narrative of the game into motion.

    Chatterbox (MAJOR UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chatterbox.png
Voiced by: Adin Rudd (EN)

  • Back from the Dead: Chatterbox is brought back in Chapter 23 thanks to Nihilister sneaking into M.M.R and releasing Material H into the room holding its remains, reconstructing and reactivating it.
  • Battle Theme Music: It has two theme songs. "Slaughterer" and "You Can't Stop Us."
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: When it shows back up to attack Counters in Chapter 13, Chatterbox declares "Engaging!" before initiating combat as a form of mockery.
  • Deal with the Devil: It is the 'Devil' in question when it comes to his deal with Enikk, the Central AI of the Ark: In exchange for periodically implanting the Rapture corruption code into randomly selected Nikkes, Chatterbox will refrain from letting the Raptures attack the Ark directly and allow humanity to survive in some fashion.
  • The Dragon: To Nihilister, who describes it as a favourite underling of hers.
  • Evil Laugh: It laughs up a storm in its final moments as it realizes that its gambit to screw Counters over one last time has succeeded.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Nobody would expect a monstrosity that vaguely resembles a robotic gorilla to be named "Chatterbox".
  • Healing Factor: Chatterbox possesses the ability to regenerate lost limbs with enough time. It actively exploits this ability to take out Mihara when it's first encountered by Team Counters, dismembering itself after Mihara uses her pain receptor swap ability on it to overload her with the feedback and incapacitate her, before regenerating the missing limbs.
  • It Can Think: Raptures typically possess the intelligence of extremely murderous animals at best. Chatterbox however, in addition to being able to talk, actually has a long-term plan in mind involving the truth about what the Commander actually is and actually takes the commander as a hostage instead of just kill him on sight like every other rapture would do. As Chapter 20 reveals, this was because it wanted to deliver him to its boss, Nihilister.
  • Kick the Dog: Its last act before being destroyed is to essentially turn Modernia into an unresponsive vegetable via direct injection of Rapture code into her brain, just as Marian's personality had resurfaced. Andersen even says as much that Chatterbox did it entirely out of spite.
  • Killed Off for Real: Gets destroyed by Snow White and Counters during the assault on the Rapture facility in Chapter 13. Pity it doesn't last.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Every scene with him is deadly serious. Someone is going to get maimed or hurt the moment he shows up.
  • Last Breath Bullet: Determined to take down at least one of the heroes before Snow White kills it, Chatterbox's head falls out of the sky and strikes Marian directly, causing her corruption to relapse despite the absence of NIMPH in her brain. Immediately afterwards, Snow White destroys what's left of it, killing it permanently.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: Chatterbox's upper body and arms are massive compared to his lower body and legs.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Rapture Queen. It's revealed in Chapter 24 that Chatterbox owes his life to her for some unspecified reason, and as such he only answers to her orders.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Yes, she was being an entitled Jerkass about it, but Nihilister did resurrect Chatterbox along with bringing Indivilia to life. He repays her by cannibalizing and severely damaging her in order to repair his own damage after the three of them get beaten badly by Rapi channelling the full might of Red Riding Hood.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Once Snow White shows up as The Cavalry in Chapter 13, it actually starts yelling in anger at its ambush attempt on Counters being foiled.
Chatterbox: You are all going to die here! All of you! No one is escaping!

     Alteisen MK.VI
Once a weaponized train designed by Heavenly Ascension to raid and plunder, it was discovered by the Central Government and swiftly seized from them. However the train was made with rather obsolete technology and was thus abandoned and left to rot. When the Raptures took over it however, it became FAR from obsolete, and now roams the surface, becoming a large threat.
  • Battle Theme Music: The Moving Fortress.
  • BFG: The giant particle cannon that the Alteisen is towing can unleash giant green beams of death that can One-Hit Kill almost any Nikke if you have equal or lower squad power.
  • Cognizant Limbs: It has separate gun and missile turrets that can attack and be destroyed independently of each other. When all turrets are destroyed, the Alteisen will pull back, and repair them, while simultaneously warming up its particle cannon main gun.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Ever heard the phrase "hit by a runaway freight train"? The Alteisen will subject your Nikke squad to that saying literally. It's absolutely bristling with weapons, from smaller turrets and missile launchers, to the giant double barrel particle cannon that can cause a Total Party Kill. It's also very heavily armored and can take quite the beating.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: It likes to shoot massive destructible missiles from the front engine. When it enters its second phase, it'll alternate between releasing missiles, and attempting to ram your squad.
  • Military Mashup Machine: Despite being called a train, and looking like one, it uses treads like a tank to move independently from rails, and has a battleship grade main cannon.
  • Ramming Always Works: If you fail to destroy its interruption part in its second phase, it'll ram the train your squad is on, dealing moderate damage across your entire squad. It'll then follow up with a broadside blast that'll deal extreme amounts of damage.
  • Traintop Battle: Your Nikke squad is on top of a train, fighting an enemy. The twist as that the enemy is also a train! And a very heavily armed and armored one at that!
  • Wave-Motion Gun: That giant double barreled particle cannon isn't for show. Fail to destroy the interruption part in the first phase, and it'll sweep two giant green lasers across the screen, most likely ending your run right then and there.

Heretics

Heretics are Nikkes who betrayed mankind and pledged themselves to the Rapture Queen for their own interests. They are classified as Pilgrims, thus, playable Heretics can be seen here.

    Heretics in general
  • Dark Action Girl: They are all female by virtue of being traitorous Nikke, and serve as Elite Mooks for the Raptures.
  • Superpower Lottery: Each Heretic is a hybrid of Nikke and Rapture technology, making them magnitudes more powerful than even unique Nikkes; as an example, Modernia (formerly Marian) gained a suite of protection-based abilities including skin hardening and nullifying an explosion.
  • Turned On Their Masters: Each is a former Nikke, a Full-Conversion Cyborg that was created to protect humanity against the Raptures, only to ultimately switch sides and attack humanity instead.

    Modernia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/boss_modernia.png
A Heretic—a Nikke-Rapture hybrid who has turned her back on mankind—who pilots a flying mech suit. She has a playful demeanor that is at odds with her violent actions... though she cuts a familiar figure.

For tropes regarding Modernia's playable appearance, see the "Marian" folder on the main page under Counters.
  • Dark Action Girl: As a Nikke who commands the Raptures, even the Commander can feel the sheer malice emanating from her presence alone.
  • Dramatic Unmask: After Snow White and Counters defeat her in combat, her visor, which was previously shielding her eyes, shatters in the aftermath, revealing her face to be identical to Marian's.
  • Empty Eyes: When the Commander jogs her memory by calling her name, Modernia briefly enters a mental crisis state as she overrides her programming, which is indicated by her eyes turning blank.
  • Foreshadowing: Although Modernia is covered head to toe in Rapture armor, there are distinct elements of her character design that provide a hint to her real identity: bandages wrapped around her head, alongside a side-tied ribbon in her hair. Her idle pose is even a mirror image of Marian.
  • Hope Spot: Chapter 13 has the team finally getting through to her after contending with her attempt at Hyde Plays Jekyll, causing Marian to reawaken for real and even giving the Commander some much-needed triage... until a badly damaged Chatterbox intervenes and forces her into a vegetative state by injecting Rapture code directly into her brain.
  • Humongous Mecha: Rather than fighting the heroes on her own, she rides a massive jet-black Rapture mecha armed to the teeth with as many weapons as a mecha can hold.
  • Hyde Plays Jekyll: In Chapter 13, Modernia briefly plays some mind games with the team by acting enough like Marian that they drop their guards... before promptly spearing both Rapi and then the Commander with her tendrils.
  • Interface Spoiler: If one looks really carefully at her design, her visor can actually be seen sporting the Pilgrim logo branding, hinting at Marian's playable appearance. This is likely due to Lazy Artist rather than plot implications, since Marian joins the Pilgrims later on and they seemingly couldn't be bothered editing a small detail of her Live2D model for consistency.
    • A minor example: a really astute player will notice that the name "Modernia" in the dialgoue box changes depending on whether Modernia has full control over herself or Marian within her is trying to resurface. In Chapter 6, it changes to "???" when Commander calls her Marian and manages to stir up the memories of her previous life, but in Chapter 13 her name remains "Modernia" even when it first seems that Marian has finally come back, which is the player's only clue that it's actually Modernia pretending to be Marian until Rapi asks her name, knowing that Modernia will not call herself Marian for fear of reverse Grand Theft Me and all the pain that comes with it, if her screams in Chapter 6 are any indication.
  • Madness Mantra: She only repeats "Commander. Commander. Commander. Commander. Commander." after being captured in Chapter 13, thanks to Chatterbox's interference.
  • Oh, Crap!: Her reaction when Secret Body!Rapi breaks off a piece of her tentacle after Material H failed to absorb her and throws it at her at beyond the speed of sound.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She is revealed to have red eyes, befitting of her status as an enemy to mankind.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Somehow she has time to wonder aloud where is the sound from the piece of her tentacle flung at her from near-point blank range by Secret Body!Rapi before she realises that it travels at a supersonic speed.

    Nihilister
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nihilister_nikke.png
Element: Fire
Weapon: End of the Old World (Sniper Rifle)
Class: Attacker
Rarity: SSR
Voiced by: Kim Hyeon-sim (KR), Hitomi Nabatame (JP), Marissa Lenti (EN)

One of the Heretic-type Nikkes fighting on the Raptures' side, debuting as the main antagonist of Chapter 20. The Commander and Counters can recruit her as part of an Investigation.

  • Ambition Is Evil: Her primary motivation is to become the most powerful being on earth and take over everything, which also motivates her to plot to kill the Rapture Queen and take over her status. At the end of her investigation story, the Commander feels like this pure ambition will be her downfall.
  • Amputation Stops Spread: Nihilister severs her arm when Johan shoots it with Vapaus, stopping it from contaminating the rest of her bloodstream. That is, until Johan uses the rest of the Vapaus on her.
  • Avenging the Villain: Subverted, she does make mention of the Counters team destroying Chatterbox and refers to him as her favourite underling, but also admits that she's not really that attached to him and doesn't fight in his name when she battles Counters.
  • Battle Theme Music: She has two, "Inferno Of Nihilist" for her Phase 1 fight and "Burn It All" for Phase 2.
  • Bragging Theme Tune: Her Phase 2 music, Burn It All, is effectively a massive string of boasts about how powerful Nihilister is and how she'll kill or drive insane anyone that tries to fight her with ease.
Do you think you will live today?
Oh I can make you die in pain, yeah!
    You'll never see another day!
(I can crush you all the way!)
    Gonna take you down today
And I will make you die in pain, yeah!
    You'll go insaaane!
    (Don't mess with me!)
  • Breath Weapon: Spews extremely hot fire in her Cybernetic Dragon Form as her primary attack. Even in playable form, she normal gun shooting are fireballs shot from one of her two cybernetic dragon heads. Her playable skills also imply spewing fire in a large area.
  • Classic Villain: She embodies Pride and Greed, while being Red and Black and Evil All Over.
  • Cruel Mercy: At the start of Chapter 25, Dorothy and Counters happen upon a heavily injured Nihilister, who was recently betrayed by Indivilia and Chatterbox and left for dead with grave wounds. With her pride in tatters, Nihilister begs her enemies to put her out of her misery, but Dorothy takes the opportunity to get back at her by calling in Eden for a pickup, forcing her to suffer just a little longer. The Commander at least offers her some pity by placing a camo tarp over her, protecting her from being cannibalized by Raptures before Inherit arrives.
  • Didn't See That Coming: At the climax of Chapter 20, Johan grabs the pistol given to the Commander and fires the Vapaus bullet at Nihilister, nailing her in the arm. Having already anticipated this outcome, Nihilister severs her arm to stop the Vapaus from entering the rest of her body and crippling her Healing Factor. Unfortunately for her, she gets a little too smug because everyone currently on the field was under the impression that there was only one Vapaus bullet. Everyone except Johan, however, who secretly knew that there are multiple Vapaus bullets and empties the rest of the gun's clip into Nihilister, causing the Vapaus to take effect and put her out of commission.
  • Dirty Coward: She talks a big game and is fully confident as long as she's got her Healing Factor. As soon as it's neutralised and she starts taking real damage, she's quick to beg for mercy.
  • The Dragon: To the Rapture Queen, since Johan describes Nihilister as one of her elites.
  • Eaten Alive: How she apparently goes out at the end of Chapter 24 when Chatterbox and Indivilia, sick of her trying to order them around and heavily damaged from Rapi unleashing Red Riding Hood's full strength on them, cannibalize her to repair themselves. Chapter 25 reveals she's still alive, but heavily damaged.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Her first bond story reveals she can eat metal to repair herself.
  • Fatal Flaw: Arrogance. Nihilister is VERY smug and self-assured with the massive level of power and influence she wields as a Rapture Heretic, which leads her to make bad mistakes in combat.
    • She prefers to play with and mock Counters and Inherit in their first bout, believing that with her very potent Healing Factor there's nothing that the Nikkes can do to her, instead of just going all-out and incinerating them as quickly as possible. Even when Johan shoots her in the arm with the Vapaus bullet, forcing her to amputate the limb to stop it spreading and disabling her nano-healing, she just stands there and crows about how doomed they are now that they've wasted their only trump card rather than counter-attack right away...allowing Johan to fire the rest of the clip into her chest, while everyone else takes the opportunity to drown her in firepower and severely damage her. She's only bailed out by Liberalio showing up.
    • She also overestimates her importance in the Rapture hierarchy and just how much respect or authority she actually commands, leading her to try and boss around Chatterbox and Indivilia, all three of them heavily damaged from Rapi beating on them in full Red Riding Hood mode, while bragging about her successful gambit to resurrect them both. She learns the hard way that Chatterbox's foremost loyalty has always been to the Rapture Queen instead of her, Indivilia doesn't quite feel that indebted to her for incarnating her in the first place...and both are willing to maim and cannibalize her to kickstart their own self-repairs and save themselves. By the time Counters and Dorothy come across her in Chapter 25, she's been critically damaged to the point of helplessness.
  • Fiery Redhead: Quite literally, she's a redhead with heat-based powers and quite the hunger for battle.
  • Healing Factor: Nihilister possesses regenerative abilities similar to Chatterbox but significantly more powerful, allowing her to shrug off virtually any level of damage. Inherit's mission is to shoot her with Vapaus, which will neutralize the nanomachines in her body that make this possible and give them an opportunity to permanently kill her.
  • Lured into a Trap: Enikk uses a signal to lure her to Counters' location when detecting her approaching The Ark in Chapter 22, deeming Counters the best chance they have to repel the Heretic.
  • Metal Muncher: In her first Investigation event, Counters happens upon her chowing down on a smorgasbord of robotic parts and loose ends while waiting to recover her strength after being shot with Vapaus.
  • Ms. Exposition: Her Investigation story primarily serves as a way to convey lore about the Heretics and their parallels to Nikkes.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's got quite the buxom and shapely figure, while running around in a see-through leotard. It's really only strategically placed portions of armour that keep her decent.
  • Playing Possum: Dorothy shoots her down in Chapter 23, but as it turns out Nihilister planned on this happening and left a non-vital weak point conspicuously exposed such that it would make an easy target. Once she was downed, Nihilister was taken to M.M.R.'s secret holding facility, where she uses high concentrations of Alva Particles to knock out the Nikkes in the room so that she would have unmitigated access to Material H, letting her revive Indivilia and Chatterbox.
  • Playing with Fire: She is capable of generating enough heat to melt Nikkes into puddles if they get too close, not to mention all the fire she spews in her dragon form.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: She sports long, shaggy crimson hair, red eyes and lips, and yet more red streaks accentuating her black armor and dragon heads. The same applies to her mechanical dragon form, not to mention in line with the volcanic theme she has. She's also got an unexplained bone to pick with humanity, making it her mission to kill them all, and practically toys with Counters when they first meet by making the Commander decide who must die (since she plans to kill everyone anyway, it's more like who dies first).
  • Scaled Up: She can transform into a cybernetic dragon for rapid flight or to throw massive amounts of fire around.
  • The Starscream: If Nihilister's comment about her plan for killing the Rapture Queen is any indication, then she's been planning to backstab her boss since before Counters and Inherit came along.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Her rematch against Counters in Chapter 22 goes much smoother than the first time around even with her back to full strength, with Anis noting she's just "a one-trick pony" who relies far too much on brute strength.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Shamelessly offers information on the Rapture Queen, even up to killing her herself, to try and stop Counters and Inherit from killing her after they deal with her Healing Factor and start piling on the hurt.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: She singles out the Commander on first arrival and quickly takes him hostage to get a good look at him, believing that he has something she wants...which she intends to cut out of him, while referring to him as "the black box".
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Come Chapter 24, Nihilister ends up getting seemingly cannibalized by Indivilia and Chatterbox to repair themselves after their defeat at the hands of Red Hood. By the time Dorothy and Counters find her in Chapter 25, she is barely alive with near-fatal injuries and her Healing Factor quickly failing.

    Liberalio (Spoilers for Chapter 20)
Voiced by: Marissa Lenti (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/liberalio_nikke.png
One of the Heretic-type Nikkes in service to the Rapture Queen. Though initially keeping herself hidden, her hand is forced during Chapter 20 to stop Counters and Inherit from killing Nihilister.
  • Animal Motif: Jellyfish. Her armor resembles a jellyfish including stingers.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Facilitates one for Nihilister when Liberalio steps in to bail her out, with Inherit and Counters too spent from the previous combat to be able to stop her absconding with her fellow.

    Indivilia (Spoilers for Chapter 24)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/indivilia_nikke.png
Previously a Heretic prototype in the form Material H, being fed Nikkes and Nihilister giving her own weaponry in Chapter 24 allowed Indivilia to rise as a complete Heretic.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: It's razor sharp and able to slice through Nikkes with ease, as Anis and Neon find out the hard way.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • She swiftly bisects Neon and Anis with her razor tail without them doing much to her in turn.
    • Rapi gives her one right back, activating Red Riding Hood, stunning her with her own broken tail and beating her senseless without Indivilia being able to retaliate.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Rapi returns Indivilia's tail to sender when she tries to stab her with it, ramming the whole rear portion through her chest.
  • Unexpected Character: Indivilia spent most of the story up to Chapter 24 incomplete and in Ark custody. Nihilister ends up repairing her alongside Chatterbox, adding a new problem to the whole ordeal.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: She and Chatterbox cannibalize Nihilister to repair themselves. This is after Nihilister went through hell to resurrect and complete them respectively.

    Anachiro (Spoilers for Red Ash)

Cinderella

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anachiro_nikke.png

A Grimms model Nikke constructed during the 1st Invasion who was intended to be the seventh member of the Goddess Squad. However, a devastating assault on her holding facility by Raptures afflicts her with an advanced form of corruption, transforming her into the Heretic known as Anachiro and becomes the Goddess Squad's greatest threat.

  • Cutscene Boss: Anachiro is battled and killed by Red Hood and the Goddess Squad at the climax of Red Ash in a fully-animated cutscene.
  • Final Boss: Cinderella is the final boss of the "Memory of Goddess" minigame, appearing at the end of Simulation Room II. Defeating her unlocks a special cutscene depicting Cinderella's fall to the Rapture corruption in the main story.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: This is how Red Hood kills her, by charging straight through Glass Slipper with the barrel of her Wolfsbane and into Anachiro herself, pinning her against a wall with her own shields trapping her and the barrel of a superweapon sniper rifle shoved straight into her chest. With her target now vulnerable, Red Hood relentlessly pumps gunshot after gunshot into Anachiro until she keels over, dead.
  • Inferred Survival: Despite being blasted by Red Hood at the end of Red Ash, Chapter 19 implies she survived the encounter to become the first test subject for Vapaus at the abandoned Research Center the Counters visit. But her current status in the present is unknown. Chapter 30 reveals Grave is carrying her body for reasons unknown.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Cinderella's weapon, Glass Slippers, is a massive coffin-shaped array of shields. Not only are they nigh-impenetrable, but she can telekinetically maneuver them with impossible speed and efficiency, giving her near-perfect invulnerability against all attacks and damage. They are also affixed with countless mirrors on their faces, which can be used to inflict apocalyptic damage by firing energy beams at them, causing the beams to reflect and refract off the shields to level battlefields with a rain of destruction. However, they are not totally unbeatable and can be weakened given a sufficient level of sustained damage, which is how the Goddess Squad manages to deal with them during their final confrontation with her.
  • Mind Rape: Her "Memory of Goddess" cutscene shows what it feels like to become corrupted, twisting and warping the desires of the host to serve the Rapture Queen.
  • That Woman Is Dead: Liliweiss tells the Goddess Squad that, after being corrupted, the Ark decided to stop calling her Cinderella, giving her the code name Anachiro.
  • The Voiceless: Throughout the Red Ash event, she does not say anything whenever she's onscreen.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Cinderella is corrupted by the Raptures before Goddess ever gets a chance to meet her. Anachiro is then seemingly eliminated by Red Hood and the Goddess Squad in their rematch at the end of Red Ash Story 2.
  • The Worf Effect: Her introduction to the story in Red Ash has her descend from the sky and bombard the Goddess Squad with a deluge of energy bullets, quickly overwhelming them to the point where even Liliweiss cannot hope to challenge her and forces the party to retreat. However, it is later surmised by Scarlet that Liliweiss could take Cinderella in a one-on-one battle and only couldn't do so at the time because she was trying to save her squadmates.
  • You Will Be Spared: According to Liliweiss, Anachiro always leaves a single person alive wherever she causes destruction, as if to leave a witness to spread word of her achievements.
  • Zerg Rush: In her "Memory of Goddess" fight, one of her attacks involves rushing the player with a huge onslaught of body doubles.

Other

    Crystal Chamber (Unmarked Spoilers

Crystal Chamber

A crystalline entity encountered during a scouting mission on the surface. It's the boss of Chapter 28.
  • Battleship Raid: One of the very few bosses in the game who takes up the entire screen when fought.
  • Battle Theme Music: We're Never Giving Up.
  • Crystalline Creature: It's best described as a living crystal mountain.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Its first alluded to in a Lost Relic in Chapter 26, where a Nikke finds one of its crystals and is gradually consumed by it.
  • Gemstone Assault: The majority of its special attacks involve firing crystalline projectiles.
  • Outside-Context Problem: From how it is described, the Crystal Chamber is some kind of living crystal that subsumes anything that touches its component crystals. Its description questions if it is actually a Rapture, and its design is unlike anything fought in the game before.
  • Parasite Zombie: Any entity that comes into contact with its crystals is gradually weakened until it dies, after which the crystals grow inside of the corpse and possess it. The process is described on a Nikke in the Lost Relics for Chapter 26, while the Rapture shown at the beginning of its boss fight acts more like a puppet than a living creature.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Beyond having an absolutely bloated health pool, Crystal Chamber introduces a new mechanic where it deploys two skills simultaneously, with the player only being able to stop one during each skill activation.
