"I'm not finished yet. This isn't nearly enough to fix 12 years of being a lazy good for nothing. I ran and ran. Ran and ran. I'm not going anywhere! I got a damn good reason not to, the Tokyo Manji Gang. Kiyomasa, if you wanna win, you got no choice but to kill me and I am not gonna lose."

Takemichi is a 26-year-old man who works part-time at a convenience store. Originally wanting to be a "hero delinquent", he left his middle school friends behind in fear after experiencing danger. When he has a chance to travel back into the past, he decides to use this opportunity to save the deaths of his friends in the present.

  • Aborted Arc: At one point in the story, Takemichi promises to lead the Black Dragons gang in its eleventh generation, possibly meant to be another parallel between him and Shinichiro Sano, the original leader and founder of the Black Dragons. This never happens and is dropped almost immediately.
    • When Takemichi later actually does start and lead his own gang in the final arc, naming it Black Dragons doesn't even cross his mind.
  • Apologises a Lot: Takemichi is always apologizing for even the smallest things. As noted by those around him and even himself, all he's good for is apologizing.
  • Becoming the Mask: Downplayed as Takemichi doesn't become morally compromised, but his original motivation for time-traveling gets expanded beyond his original goal the more he does it. Originally, his only motivation was to prevent Hina's tragic death in the present; however, as his friendship with Mikey, Draken and the rest of the Tokyo Manji Gang grows, he becomes invested in saving their futures as well.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a good kid who tries to resolve fights with words rather than fists, but that doesn't mean he can't be as scary as the more violent characters if he gets really riled up.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: A gender-inverted example: Takemichi learns from Hinata that he broke up with her on Christmas Eve of 2005. He later realizes that it was to prevent her from being involved in any future conflicts with the Tokyo Manji Gang, especially since he was about to confront the Black Dragons. He also did it partially to the request of Hinata's father, who did not want her to be associated with him.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Brooding Boy to Hinata's Gentle Girl. He becomes frustrated and nearly falls into despair repeatedly over not being able to save those he cares about. However, Hinata's presence and love for Takemichi give him the confidence and motivation to save not only her, but also his friends.
  • Butt-Monkey: He's on the receiving end of many beatdowns and most of the misfortune in the series, not to mention his loser status in 2017.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: With the power to go back to the past and change the future, Takemichi, although faltering and frustrated at times, refuses to give in and tries to save the lives of as many people as he can and create the best future possible, going back in time many times and enduring many beatings to do so. Even when Mikey tells him to not find him in the present-day using a video tape stored in the time capsule out of fear that they'll be endangered by his worse future self, Takemichi decides to find and save Mikey anyway, going back to the past to do so even though everyone else is alive and living happy lives.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Takemichi is this in spades. He suffers from low self esteem, is noted to only be good at apologizing, and is a coward who has no fighting skill that leads him to get beaten up by other delinquents often. Despite this, through his multiple time leaps, he becomes more and more determined to save whoever he can, going from a coward to someone with great conviction, with his unyielding spirit inspiring the others in Toman.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Has to fight dirty to make up for how physically weak he is, resorting to biting and choking out Kiyomasa from behind to beat him.
  • Determinator: Takemichi is perhaps one of the worst fighters among the delinquents, but has the resolve to take any serious beating that comes his way to save the people he cares about. It's said that the only thing he's good at is being bad at giving up.
  • Discard and Draw: After returning to the past one last time, Takemichi's lost the power to go back to the present-day, as it requires him to shake hands with Mikey, who's now in the Kanto Manji gang and intent on not meeting any of his former friends. Instead, Takemichi now has the power to see into the future, witnessing Senju's death.
  • Enemy Mine: Despite knowing that Kisaki is responsible for Baji and Hinata's deaths and being very much unhappy about it, Takemichi chooses to work with him to stop Hakkai from killing Taiju as well as to learn something about him in order to be able to kick him out of Toman and prevent the Bad Future.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In 2005, he had bleached blonde hair that is gelled up. In 2017, his hair is downwards-facing and black.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Takemichi's time traveling powers was actually given to him by Shinichiro unknowingly when the older man, after his first time travel attempt succeeded, saved Takemichi and Hinata from being ganged on by middle school delinquents.
  • Future Loser: In the present day, he's a 26-year-old without any direction in life who lives in a small, messy apartment and works in a DVD store with a manager younger than he is. Him being well-aware of his future as a lonely loser motivates Takemichi to try his best to change his life and save others during his time in the past.
  • I Work Alone: Takemichi tries not to get his friends involved in the final arc after he realizes they are now leading honest lives. While he was initially intent on keeping up with working and trying to save Mikey on his own, Hina's encouragement made him realize that he doesn't have to try and be like Mikey or Draken, he just had to be himself. So this is eventually averted when Takemichi decides to talk to Chifuyu and ask for his help shortly after he is discharged from the hospital.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Takemichi has blue eyes and is a kind, caring young man who's prone to succumbing to his emotions and crying.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Mikey gives him "Takemitchy". Draken uses it for him too.
    • Akkun calls him the "Crybaby Hero", both in the present-day and the past.
  • It's All My Fault: After Draken's death in the final arc, a half-conscious Takemichi agrees with Chifuyu that he is responsible. This leads to him believing he should save Mikey alone to prevent any of his friends from getting hurt.
  • Made of Iron: No, seriously. The dude survives beatings that legitimately should have killed him, and is able to still walk after getting shot in the leg.
  • Meaningful Echo: Early in the story, Hinata tells Takemichi that he doesn't have to be as strong as Mikey or Draken, he can just go about what he wanted to do by being his own self. In the Final arc, Takemichi recalls her words and decides to go about saving Mikey in his own way, starting from talking to Chifuyu and gathering those who are willing to help him, such as Hakkai and Inui.
  • Morality Chain: Ends up becoming one to Mikey, with one timeline having Mikey kill all their friends and become one of the world's most wanted criminals because Takemichi left Toman. Mikey is well aware that Takemichi has become this for him, but cuts contact with him and their other friends anyway to prevent them from being harmed by him in the future. Takemichi ends up returning to the past 10 years one last time to save Mikey.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Takemichi learns in the Black Dragons arc that, in the present timeline, he had become loyal to Kisaki and had gone along with the corruption that had caused Chifuyu to lose trust in him. Furthermore, in this timeline, he was the one who indirectly got Akkun and Hinata killed.
  • Nice Guy: He's a nice person through and through and tries his best to get through to people through kindness.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Despite managing to change the past enough to reach his initial goal of saving Hinata's life and attaining a present where they can be together, he laments the fact that Mikey is not part of this better Alternate Timeline and goes out of his way, ignoring Draken's advices, to reach out to Mikey in order to attain a Golden Ending where all the gang gets to be happy. This eventually leads to Draken's death which is only undone after Takemichi time traveled to 1998 near the finale of the story.
  • Prophetic Fallacy: A weakness of Takemichi's foresight that he gains during the final arc. He sees a glimpse of the future but it can't be fully correctly interpreted without enough context. Case in point, Takemichi sees a glimpse of what looks like him bleeding out but it soon turns out that it was just him getting tomato juice spilled on him.
  • Rank Up: Takemichi is made the captain of the 1st division after Baji's death.
  • Retroactive Precognition: In the final arc, Takemichi develops the ability to see the future while he is in the past. This begins when he suddenly has a vision where Senju is killed.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: The story revolves around him trying to prevent past events from happening in order to change the future for the better, leading to many a Trauma Conga Line the more he gets involved with the past.
  • Shower Scene: His shower scene gives a good shot of his bare buttocks before focusing on Takemichi himself.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift:
    • He begins regularly wearing the signature Toman uniform after formally joining the gang.
    • Takemichi dons the Brahman uniform in Chapter 218 after joining the gang to take down the Kanto Manji Gang and bring Mikey back.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Played for Laughs when he gets a big ego from earning the city's delinquents' respect because of the rumors after the big show-down against Moebius, with first-years bowing to him and other members of Toman actually talking to him. Draken quickly (and funnily) calls him out for being a jackass.
  • Tender Tears: Takemichi cries very easily, which is why Akkun gives him the nickname "Crybaby Hero."
  • Took a Level in Badass: Not that much in actual combat ability though, Takemichi is still very much a weak fighter unable to defeat most other delinquents and having to resort to tactics like biting. But his time in the past and desire to protect those he cares about turn him from a coward into a true cry-baby hero, refusing to back down even when beaten within an inch of his life and held at gunpoint, and willing to risk his own life to save others.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In the Black Dragons arc, Takemichi learns that in the present timeline, he had become a scummy top executive equally involved in the corruption that had taken place.
  • You Remind Me of X: Mikey takes a liking to Takemichi and gains an admiration for him because of his similarities with his late brother: being weak at fighting and to women, but very loyal and refusing to give in to anyone.

Click here to see Hina 12 years ago

Hinata, nicknamed "Hina", is a girl who attended Takemichi's middle school and was his girlfriend at one point in time. In 2017, she is killed by the Tokyo Manji Gang, and after reuniting with her in the past, Takemichi is determined to save her.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Takemichi accidentally calls her "Hina" one time, and she tells him it's fine to call her that, so he does from then on.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Gentle Girl to Takemichi's Brooding Boy. He becomes frustrated and nearly falls into despair repeatedly over not being able to save those he cares about. However, Hinata's presence and love for Takemichi gives him the confidence and motivation to save not only her but also his friends.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Her eyes and hair have the same salmon-pink coloring.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Hinata has a bob cut in the past and long hair in the present.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Hinata tells Takemichi that they actually first met when they were in 6th grade, when Takemichi saved her from some bullies.
  • Genki Girl: Hinata is a very cheerful girl who is caring towards others.
  • I Can't Feel My Legs!: After the Moebius arc, Takemichi travels to the present and witnesses first-hand on how Hinata dies: a truck is crashed into the vehicle she is sitting in, and the debris goes through her torso, even possibly amputating her. She says that she's "lost feeling in her legs."
  • In Spite of a Nail: Even after Takemichi prevents Draken's death, Hina still dies in the future, at the hands of Akkun who is forced to do so by Kisaki. This makes Takemichi realize that the true root of her death is Kisaki, and he decides to join and rise up in Toman to stop him.
  • It's All My Fault: After Hinata overhears Kisaki's Motive Rant, she blames the incidents on herself.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After confronting her father on what he made Takemichi say to her to break up with her, she feels like a bitch for beating him up and going overboard on him.
  • Nice Girl: Hina is a very kind and caring girl who tries to comfort others in despair, especially Takemichi.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: The story is kickstarted by the news of her death, and consequently Takemichi and after the first time jump Naoto's efforts to change the timeline and save her.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Has salmon hair and is a very kind girl all around.
  • Selective Obliviousness: After Takemichi confirms that present-day Naoto is dead, he has a Heroic BSoD and breaks down, all the while telling past Naoto about everything that happened so far in his moment of grief. However, he doesn't realize that Hinata had heard everything, and she pretends to have heard nothing out of respect for him. Eventually, she tells Mikey and Draken to boost their morale after they are struck with grief over Emma's death.
  • Sherlock Homage: In chapter 66, Hinata suddenly appears narrating her observations like a detective and addressing Takemichi as her "Watson". Naoto points out that she's into detective series lately. At one point, she even takes out a pipe.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: This is why Hinata was still in love with Takemichi, to the point of rejecting Kisaki, even in a timeline where Takemichi broke up with her. Even though Takemichi isn't as strong as everyone else, Hinata admired his empathy and how he'd always come to the rescue regardless.
  • Third-Person Person: Hinata refers to herself as "Hina" in third person in the Japanese version.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Takemichi eventually gives her a clover necklace in the past, which she has worn since. In the subsequent present timelines, her necklace is given to him as a keepsake.

Click here to see Naoto 12 years ago

Naoto is Hinata's younger brother who originally was killed in 2017 along with her, but Takemichi's time-traveling prevented his death. In the present, he works as a police detective trying to prevent Hinata's death and provides a valuable source of information for Takemichi.

  • Cooldown Hug: During the Black Dragons arc, Takemichi has a Heroic BSoD, but Naoto calms him down by hugging him and boosting his morale.
  • Deadpan Snarker: In present time, Naoto tends to make sarcastic comments towards Takemichi when he forgets to focus on their mission or fails to remember something crucial. In the later arcs, he stops doing so, as Takemichi's determination impresses him and he starts to respect him more.
  • Demoted to Extra: As Takemichi begins to build more friendships within the Tokyo Manji Gang and has less chances to return to the present, Naoto starts appearing less beginning with the Black Dragons arc. By the final arc, he is completely written out of the story.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the Tenjiku arc, present-day Naoto is shot and killed by Kisaki when he pushes Takemichi away. However, thanks to Takemichi dissolving the Tenjiku in the past, Naoto is later revived.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: In chapter 131, when Takemichi suggests to Naoto that Kisaki might be a time traveler, Naoto responds that the only way they can end things is by killing him. Takemichi becomes shocked, until Naoto insists that he was joking, even though it's pretty obvious that he wasn't.
  • Knowledge Broker: Because Naoto works as a detective, he has access to police documents and he is able to debrief Takemichi on any current events, as well as any criminal activity any of the gangs have been up to.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Unlike the present, Naoto's past self is largely unaware and uninvolved with any of the gang activities.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite being smart and having high intellect, it's revealed that Naoto is a huge fan of the occult and supernatural when he's younger. Fortunately, Naoto's interest in the occult is what led to Naoto believing in Takemichi's time traveling powers easily and takes Takemichi's warning about his sister's future seriously.
  • Out of Focus: As the series goes on, Naoto begins to appear less, as Takemichi's chances of traveling to the present become lower and lower. Furthermore, his role as The Confidant begins to be taken over by Chifuyu beginning the Black Dragons arc.
    • In the Black Dragons arc, Takemichi is arrested when the police begin raiding the Tokyo Manji Gang, and Naoto warns him that it will be difficult for them to meet in person before they shake hands. Takemichi decides not to risk going back in case he cannot return to the past.
    • In the Tenjiku arc, Naoto takes a gunshot meant for Takemichi and dies, meaning that Takemichi cannot travel to the present at all.
    • In the final arc, Takemichi can no longer travel back to the past through Naoto, because Naoto no longer has the desire to change the past now that Hinata is alive.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Like Takemichi, Naoto remembers the events of every single alternate timeline of the present and uses his knowledge to debrief Takemichi on current events.
  • The Smart Guy: Thanks to Takemichi's advice, Naoto studied extremely hard to become a police officer, and in the present, he regularly debriefs Takemichi on any current events. Even in the Tenjiku arc, Takemichi states that Naoto is very smart.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Highly resembles his father. Takemichi even accidentally calls his father "Naoto" while time-leaping in the past.

    Manjiro "Mikey" Sano

"Nobody thinks delinquents are cool these days, right? In my big bro's time, there were tons of biker gangs around here. They'd rip through the city on their super-loud motorcycles. They were all bold as hell, fighting all the time, but they took care of their own problems. What's so lame about that? That's why I'm gonna make a new age of delinquents."

The deuteragonist of Tokyo Revengers. He is the founding member and leader of the Tokyo Manji Gang. Nicknamed "Invincible Mikey" despite his small size, he takes a liking to Takemichi.

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: Mikey mispronounces Takemichi's name as "Takemitchy", and it later becomes an Affectionate Nickname for him.
  • The Ace: Mikey is the charismatic, respected leader of Toman and a powerful fighter nicknamed "Invincible Mikey" for a reason. Enemy gangs consider him to be the foremost threat in Toman.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: He’s a bit more emotional and cocky in the live action movie, often becoming an outright Large Ham during all out brawls.
  • Aerith and Bob: Mikey stands out for using a non-Japanese name, which he adopted to help Emma feel not alone.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He's the leader of Toman because he's their best fighter, defeating other delinquents to assert his authority and recruit them under his gang.
  • Badass Adorable: Mikey is a short, round-faced teenager with large eyes, who has an infamously sweet tooth, pouts when his kid's meal doesn't have a flag on it, sleeps with an old towel he's had since he was a child, and frequently takes naps in inappropriate places, leading to Draken carrying him around piggyback-style. He's also a charismatic gang leader whose kicks can take down men several heads taller than him.
  • Badass in Distress: Halfway through Bloody Halloween, Mikey falls unconscious after taking a hit from a steel pipe to the head and exerting his energy fighting Kazutora and two other Valhalla members. This causes a large number of Valhalla members to immediately take the opportunity to go after him, even though this was a ruse by Kisaki in order to raise his status in the Tokyo Manji Gang.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: For most of the series, Mikey is a light-hearted, empathetic Father to His Men who follows the traditional delinquent Code of Honor by notably refusing to involve civilians, partake in needless violence or hit women. In all present timelines, he turns into a cold-hearted criminal who feels nothing killing people, even his childhood friends. The final arc also shows him watching his men fight from the sidelines instead of being by their side like he once did.
  • Beneath the Mask: Puts up a brave face in front of everyone, reassuring them that Draken won't die because he promised him that they'd own the whole country together... and later Takemichi finds him, falling and crying Tears of Joy out of relief when Draken's surgery is a success.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: In spite of Mikey's playfulness and constant smiling around his friends, he's very imposing when playing his role as the leader of Toman, with his subordinates holding a degree of fear towards him, and has an inner darkness that he's prone to succumbing to without the positive influence of those close to him.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Mikey treats Emma, his half-sister, very well. When they were younger, he decides to adopt a non-Japanese name to help her not feel alone. After the Valhalla arc, he also takes her out to a restaurant for her birthday.
  • Big Brother Worship: Mikey looked up to his older brother Shinichiro as a child and still holds him in very high regard, with his memory inspiring Mikey's dream of creating a new age of delinquents.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Despite not being notified, Mikey makes his way to the church to fight Taiju. It later turns out that he was looking for Takemichi at Emma's request after Takemichi breaks up with Hinata and was guided to the church after hearing Mitsuya's bike.
    • Mikey shows up to fight Izana thanks to Hinata revealing Takemichi was time-traveling, all while he was in the middle of a Heroic BSoD due to Emma's death.
  • Big Good: As the leader of Toman and its strongest member, Mikey qualifies. He's treated as Toman's biggest asset in winning a fight against a rival gang. After disbanding Toman Mikey becomes one of the most significant antagonists, now running the amoral Kanto Manji Gang.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: The Little Guy to Draken's Big Guy, short for his age while Draken is ridiculously tall with a thin build.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: His pure black eyes look really chilling whenever Mikey is enraged.
  • Born Winner: He's a karate prodigy, and was already able to take down teenagers as a grade schooler.
  • Broken Ace: Mikey is the strongest member of Toman, nicknamed "Invincible Mikey", is very charismatic, and rarely shows signs of weakness. However, he's heavily affected by events in his life such as his brother's death, and later on Baji and Emma's. And in Bad Futures without his friends or positive influences, he becomes more merciless as one of Japan's worst crime lords and so self-loathing that he tries to commit suicide. One of Takemichi's biggest goals is to prevent Mikey from becoming this, and is the reason for him time-leaping one last time despite everyone else's fates being happy.
  • Broken Bird: Mikey becomes a Rare Male Example in alternate future timelines, losing those he deeply cares about and being consumed by his inner darkness without them to save him from it, becoming the leader of terrible crime syndicates and Driven to Suicide. In one timeline, he becomes the leader of Bonten and fatally shoots Takemichi and then tries to commit suicide by jumping off the building but Takemichi tries to save him, with Mikey giving in and asking Takemichi to save him with his tears in his eyes. Their shared motivation leads Takemichi to go back one last time 10 years into the past to save Mikey once and for all.
  • The Captain: He is the leader of the Tokyo Manji Gang, Boten in one of the future timelines and is currently the leader of the Kantou Manji Gang
  • Child Prodigy: Was already very good at martial arts at a young age despite never practicing.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Takamichi notes that he has some fairly odd mannerisms, such as barging into his school to pick him up on short notice, all of which are extremely contrasting to his ruthless motivations.
  • Coat Cape: Mikey wears the signature Toman coat as a cape almost all the time.
  • Cool Big Bro: Decided to become this to his younger half-sister Emma after learning how sad she felt from her mother leaving her. He started calling himself "Mikey" so Emma wouldn't feel left out from having a foreign name.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: During the time in-between Takemichi's return to the present and final leap into the past, Mikey fought with his former friends (Draken, Mitsuya, Chifuyu, and Peh-yan) and made them despise him to push them away so that they'd become better people and he wouldn't let them sink into amorality with him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • He defeats Osanai with a single roundhouse kick to the head, and this is after Osanai was beating up Pah-chin.
    • He knocks out Hanma the same way during Bloody Halloween.
    • He defeats Taiju by body-slamming him.
    • He takes out Kakucho with a single hit during the Three Deities battle.
  • Deuteragonist: Mikey is the deuteragonist of Tokyo Revengers as the character secondary in importance to only Takemichi himself.
  • Death Glare: pulls off a few scary ones throughout the series. Bottom line - don’t make him angry.
  • Death of a Child: The original timeline's Mikey was never a delinquent or crook because he never lived long enough to do so. As a child, he slipped and fell while playing with the airplane replica he got from Shinichiro, putting him into a coma and doing enough brain damage that he became alive but unresponsive. He eventually dies after four years.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The death of Emma really hit him hard. He can barely even respond when others are talking to him nor bring himself to care about the gang when they are going into battle against The Black Dragons. Hina is fortunately able to bring him out of it just enough for him to go and win the battle but the damage is done as, when Takemitchi goes back to the future, Mikey has disappeared from his friends life and leads a criminal gang.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: During the Tenjiku arc, in present time, Naoto shoots and kills Mikey when he threatens to shoot Takemichi. Takemichi holds him in his arms until he dies.
  • Driven to Suicide:
    • In one future timeline, after having killed all his friends in Toman, he meets Takemichi in Manila and asks him to kill him. When Takemichi refuses, he puts a gun to his head but Naoto shoots Mikey dead, with Mikey thanking Takemichi and dying in his arms.
    • In the final arc, during the present, he throws himself off a building after shooting Takemichi.
  • Driven to Villainy: Events such as Draken and Baji's deaths and Kisaki's influence lead Mikey to become a terrible criminal in future timelines. Unchangeable tragedies like Shinichiro's, Baji's, and Emma's deaths take their mental toll on Mikey, and he kills all his friends in one future where Takemichi left Toman And even after Kisaki's death, he still becomes a terrible criminal, because he disbanded Toman and didn't want to harm his friends as he was well-aware of his inner darkness by then.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Mikey's pupils, even when he was a child, look very lifeless. His dull stare is intensified when you make him angry. It reflects the tragedies that occurred in his youth when he becomes a grown-up like his brother's death, Draken's death, Baji's death, killing Kazutora, Emma's death, and ultimately letting Kisaki corrupt him.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: As a child, he has short blond hair, and in middle school, his hair becomes long. During the Tenjiku arc, his present-day self has short black hair. In the current present, he keeps his hair short but it is dyed white.
  • Evil Former Friend: Becomes this in possible future timelines as the leader of Tokyo's worst criminal syndicate. After he became aware that he'd be this, he fought his former friends in an attempt to get them to hate him. By the time Takemichi has time leaped one last time into the past to redeem Mikey, he's become the leader of Kanto Manji Gang, one of the most brutal current gangs.
  • Evil Me Scares Me: His video tape addressed to Takemichi for the present-day shows that Mikey was well-aware that he would descend into evil eventually, and for this reason he disbands Toman and asks the present-day Takemichi not to find him for his own safety. It turns out Mikey was right — he became the leader of Bonten, Japan's worst criminal group.
  • Extremity Extremist: Fights using his signature roundhouse kick to the head, which is usually enough to completely knock someone out.
  • Fallen Hero: Mikey goes from being the leader of Toman, fiercely loyal to his friends, to becoming a leader of Japan's worst crime group in multiple future timelines where he doesn't have his friends or family to stop him from straying.
  • Frontline General: He always fights by his men's side during melees, coming to their help when necessary and taking on the strongest opponents such as Hanma or Kazutora. He stops doing it following his Face–Heel Turn, instead sitting back and leaving Kanto Manji members to fight on their own unless he's directly provoked.
  • Future Me Scares Me: In the video tape he puts in the time capsule for Takemichi to view in the present-day, Mikey tells him about his inner darkness, and how he wants Takemichi to promise him to not find him so that he won't be harmed and live a happy life. Takemichi does so anyway, and Mikey turns out to have become the leader of Bonten and fatally shoots Takemichi, only surviving because Takemichi's insistence on saving him leads a suicidal Mikey to break down ask to be saved as well, time-leaping Takemichi one last time.
  • The Gadfly: He's incredibly good at getting on people's nerves. His reaction to Draken showing off his freshly healed stabbing scar? Punching it to prove that he's not fully recovered.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Mikey's chill and carefree demeanor all but vanishes as soon as he's on the battlefield or something serious regarding his friends comes up. He's absolutely terrifying in a fight.
  • Important Haircut: In several present timelines, Mikey gets the same haircut as a deceased loved one or someone important to him.
    • In the Black Dragon timeline, he cuts his hair short then dyes it black like Shinichiro after becoming Izana's Replacement Goldfish for the latter, then grows it out like Emma, then cuts it like Izana.
    • In the Bonten timeline, he dyes his hair white and styles it like Izana.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Even after Kisaki, who morally corrupts Mikey in the future, dies, Mikey still becomes one of Tokyo's worst criminals. It's because he's well aware that he's going to fall into evil anyways (no thanks to the past tragedies in his life) and disbands Toman, as a result, to prevent his friends from being harmed by him. As a result, Takemichi goes back in time the last time to save Mikey once and for all.
  • Invincible Hero: Deconstructed. With his dying breath, Draken pities the fact that Mikey never experienced what defeat feels like, as losing to stronger people when he was younger humbled Draken and the aftermath felt strangely peaceful to him.
  • I Work Alone: Mikey disbands Toman while they're the top gang in Tokyo. It's later revealed that he did so because he was aware that he would fall into evil and didn't want his friends near him, and in the two years after they disbanded he has become the leader of the new Kanto Manji Gang, now one of the big three gangs in Tokyo.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Mikey addresses a video letter to Takemichi warning him that he has a "dark side" that will eventually take over him and that the main reason why he disbanded the Tokyo Manji Gang was to protect his friends from leading them down the same dark path. He warns Takemichi not to try to save him, and he eventually establishes Bonten.
  • Knight Templar: In most of the present timelines, Mikey ends up being isolated from his friends due to Kisaki's influence to the point that he no longer trusts them, and he has them killed in some way. In the Tenjiku arc, the present Mikey kills all of his friends because he eventually comes to believe that if he kills the people affecting his conscience, he will no longer feel uneasy.
  • Light Is Not Good: As the leader of the Kanto Manji Gang after he disbands Toman, Mikey wears the gang's white uniform and has lost a lot of his morality after pushing his friends away, with the Kanto Manji Gang being completely different from Toman in brutality and Mikey now being seen as a "bad guy".
  • Logical Weakness: He fights using his roundhouse kicks. Kazutora takes advantage of this by luring Mikey to having to fight Chonbo and Chome on a heap of cars where there's bad footing, preventing him from landing solid hits with his kicks.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Manjiro uses the characters for "ten thousand", "next", and "son" in Japanese.
    • His nickname Mikey means "who is like God", fitting with his imposing charisma as the leader of Toman.
  • Mistaken for Romance: With Emma by Takemichi and Hina, thinking that they're going on a date and that Emma is cheating on Draken. It's soon revealed that they're actually half-siblings, and Mikey was taking Emma out for her birthday.
  • Morality Adjustment: According to Baji, Mikey became much nicer after meeting Draken. Given that Draken is seen several times acting as his moral compass, that's not surprising.
  • Mukokuseki: Unlike all the other delinquents, whose unnatural hair color is dyed, Mikey's hair is naturally blonde despite being fully Japanese while his older brother Shinichiro had black hair. Interestingly, his younger half-sister Emma has sandy blonde hair, but unlike Mikey she's half-Japanese.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: Mikey has this look with his Coat Cape during the fight against Valhalla.
  • Paradox Person: Mikey was supposed be dead as a teenager in the original timeline, but Shinichiro's meddling resulted in universal karma collecting in the form of Mikey's (and others') Dark Impulses. As a result, whenever he's supposed to die, the impulses take over and violently correct things, such as them manifesting when playing with the airplane that caused him to trip and fall into a coma.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He's called "Invincible Mikey" for his strength, incapacitating others much larger than him with a single roundhouse kick, despite his short height.
  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: The various tragedies that occur in life serve to continually isolate him to the point where he succumbs to his dark side in the future, becoming one of Tokyo's top criminals and killing all of his friends at one point to ease his conscience.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Along with his siblings, he was raised by his paternal grandfather. In the Shounen Magazine extras, it's revealed that his father died from an accident while his mother died from illness.
  • Red Baron: Named "Invincible Mikey" for being a powerful, undefeated fighter in gang fights.
  • Security Blanket: He cannot sleep without holding onto his favorite towel.
  • The Sociopath: Mikey embodies a disturbingly realistic and complex portrayal of an individual with evident antisocial/psychopathic behaviors, including impulsiveness, aggression, and a Lack of Empathy, guilt, or shame. Throughout the narrative, Mikey showcases a penchant for physical violence and appears devoid of remorse for some of his most brutal actions, often displaying a lack of concern for the potential consequences. However, despite his violent tendencies, Mikey possesses innate charisma and charm, and can be remarkably playful when he chooses to be, traits commonly associated with highly functional sociopaths.
  • Start of Darkness: Despite Mikey's kindness and fierce protectiveness towards those close to him, he's shown many times to have a ruthless side and is noted to have inner darkness that consumes him without the presence of the positive influences in his life. In multiple timelines, he ends up letting Toman become a full-fledged crime syndicate committing every crime imaginable. In the final arc, Takemichi goes back in time despite saving all their other friends to stop Mikey from falling into his darkness and becoming the leader of Bonten, Japan's worst criminal organization.
  • Stepford Smiler: Takemichi notes that Mikey carries a lot of burden with him and that he often smiles when he lies.
  • Sweet Tooth: His Trademark Favorite Food is dorayaki, and he enjoys any and all kinds of sweets. A flashback has Draken get angry at Mikey for eating his entire parfait after promising to only take a bite.
  • Tattooed Crook:
    • From the future in which he kills all his friends in Toman, Mikey has a dragon tattoo on his neck similar to Draken's and Takashi's.
    • In the future where Mikey becomes the leader of Bonten, the worst crime group in Japan, he has a tattoo of the hanafuda design on Izana's earring, which is what lets Takemichi recognize him on the news.
  • Tears of Joy: After he’s alone he bursts with tears of relief after Draken’s life is saved after being stabbed.
  • Tender Tears: After Takemitchy promises Mikey to save him from his descent to darkness Mikey cries - begging Takemitchi to help him.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Mikey was all but ready to kill Kazutora, for killing his brother Shinshiro, when he got out of jail. It took a lot of convincing from Baji and Takemichi to get him to forgive Kazutora as he didn’t know that it was Mikey’s brother he accidentally killed. The conflict unfortunately ends with Baji’s death.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Dorayaki, two pieces of pancakes filled with sweet bean paste.
  • Tranquil Fury: How Mikey's anger manifests — the light from his eyes disappears and he maintains his soft-spoken-ness while making it clear that he's enraged.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Goes through an utterly brutal amount of suffering over the course of the various timelines, including the deaths of his brother, half-sister, and best friend.
  • You Killed My Father: He hates Kazutora and vows to kill him because he killed his older brother Shinichiro by hitting him over the head after breaking into his bike shop with Baji, ironically to steal a bike for Mikey's birthday. He wants to kill him even more after he fatally stabs Baji, but Baji's suicide to absolve Kazutora of his death, combined with remembering their promise to form Toman, leads Mikey to forgive him.
