Key members of Toman as of 2005
Click here to see Toman as of 2008 (SPOILERS)
  • Breaking the Fellowship: After the Kanto incident was concluded, Mikey disbands Toman and all the original 50 members and new recruits like Takemichi and Inui included went their separate ways. However, Takemichi was able to gather a majority of the founding members and key members back (Minus Kazutora who is still in Juvie and Muto who is deceased by 2008), who in turn, contacted the other original members and rebuild the second Generation of Toman with Takemichi as the 2nd generation boss and Chifuyu the Vice President.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: In the earlier timelines, due to Kisaki's influence and manipulation, Toman went from a teen Bōsōzoku gang lead by Mikey that initially started out with well intentions and eventually corrupted to become the worst crime syndicate to exist. Once Kisaki is out of the picture, this was later instead transferred to the Kanto Manji Gang, the predecessor of Bonten.

President and Vice President

    Manjiro Sano (Mikey)

    Ken Ryuguji (Draken)

Ken Ryuguji (Draken)

Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki (Japanese, adult (Season 1)), Masaya Fukunishi (Japanese, adult (Season 2)), Shizuka Ishigami (Japanese, child), Sean Chiplock (English), Víctor Ruiz (Latin American Spanish)

Portrayed by: Yuki Yamada (film), Shou Jinnai (stage play)

"You can find guys good at fighting all over the place. But a guy who'll stand up to anyone because there's something he won't give up, not many guys like you at all."

Vice-President of the Tokyo Manji Gang who is commonly known as "Draken". He works closely with Mikey and is his trusted companion.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Mikey calls Draken "Ken-chin."
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: The Big Guy to Mikey's Little Guy, being ridiculously tall with a thin build while Mikey is short for his age.
  • Blood Knight: Draken sure can enjoy a good fight with a strong opponent, as seen with a smile on his face while doing so.
  • Crusading Widower: Despite Takemichi saving Draken, in the subsequent present timelines, he is sentenced to death. Takemichi later learns that Draken's motivations for committing the crime was to avenge Emma.
  • Face of a Thug: Downplayed. He can be incredibly ruthless to a point and is naturally highly intimidating, but he's rather genial when someone hasn't pissed him off.
  • Heroic Bastard: Was born to a prostitute and raised in a brothel. Despite being very intimidating and brutal at times, Draken is at heart a good guy who cares greatly for his gang, especially Mikey and later on Takemichi.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the final arc, Draken protects Takemichi and Senju from several members of the Rokuhara Tandai, getting shot in the process.
  • His Heart Will Go On: Even 12 years after losing Emma, he remains single.
  • Killed Off for Real: Draken is killed in the final arc after protecting Takemichi and Senju from bullets fired from the Rokuhara Tandai. This time, the paramedics are unable to save him.
  • Killed Offscreen: In the Tenjiku arc, present-day Mikey has Draken stabbed to death.
  • Meaningful Name: Ken means "hard" in Japanese. Ryuguji uses the characters for "dragon", "shrine", and "temple" in Japanese, alluding to his dragon tattoo.
  • Morality Chain:
    • Draken is the one who keeps Mikey from succumbing to his worst instincts. As Takemichi put it, Draken is Mikey's heart. Draken dying on August 3rd 2005 is what drives Mikey to make Toman as ruthless as it is in the present.
    • Draken also serves as the Voice of Reason among the Tokyo Manji Gang's commanders. During the Bad Future of the Black Dragons arc, Draken being unavailable due to getting the death penalty makes it easy for the Tokyo Manji Gang and its captains to be corrupted.
  • The Mourning After: Even 12 years after Emma's death, in a present where he's alive and living an honest life running a bike shop, he's still single.
  • Mythical Motifs: Dragons. His last name contains the character for it, he has a dragon tattoo, and like the Eastern conception he's strong, protective and benevolent.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: A flashback shows him and Mitsuya completely ignoring bikini-clad women on the beach and dashing to play in the ocean instead, baffling Kazutora. Possibly justified since Draken has been used to seeing girls walking around in their underwear since birth.
  • Number Two: To Mikey.
  • Oblivious to Love: Draken doesn't seem to be aware of Emma's crush on him, causing her to resort to cheap tricks (like seducing Takemichi in her debut appearance) in order to give him a Green-Eyed Epiphany. However, after Takemichi visits Draken's home for the first time, he notes that Draken does seem to return her feelings as well. This goes nowhere, as Emma is killed before anything happens to their relationship, but the event causes Draken to admit he's always been in love with her at her funeral.
  • One-Man Army: He's second-in-command of Toman for a reason. He knocks out ten guys at once during the fight against Valhalla. He later defeats a hundred Black Dragons left outside the church by Taiju by himself.
  • Rugged Scar: Draken gets a scar on the left side of his stomach after getting stabbed by Kiyomasa.
  • Secret Test of Character: Along with Mikey, his confrontation with Takemichi at his school has shades of this as they are impressed that Takemichi stood up to them when they started to threaten Hina. Draken later admits that the reason they specifically wanted to recruit Takemichi into their gang is that they already have more than enough good fighters, they thought of him as actually someone with a good moral center.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Draken dons the Brahman uniform after joining the gang to take down the Kanto Manji Gang and bring Mikey back.
  • Son of a Whore: He was born the son of a prostitute, not knowing who his father is, who left him when he was two. His home is a brothel and he states that he grew up around pink towels and the smell of lube.
  • Tattooed Crook: He has his signature dragon tattoo on his left temple, which he got in 5th grade. The tattoo artist lampshades it, saying that he'll grow up to be a rotten adult.
  • Together in Death: Draken slowly dies from blood loss, taking bullets meant for Takemichi and, after having Takemichi swear to look after Mikey in his place, passes on, reuniting with Emma in the afterlife, taking her hand as they ascend into the sky...
  • Younger Than They Look: Draken is ridicuously tall for his age, and Takemichi even tells him that he "doesn't look like a 3rd year middle school student."

First Division

    Takemichi Hanagaki

    Keisuke Baji

Keisuke Baji

Voiced by: Masaaki Mizunaka (Japanese), Lucien Dodge (English), Miguel de León (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baji.png

Baji is the captain of Tokyo Manji Gang's 1st division and one of the group's founders. He is Mikey's childhood friend.

  • Animal Lover: The first character book mentions that Baji loves animals. His room contains animal-themed manga, several items for cats including food, bowls and brushes, and he leaves his window open so stray cats can enter. His dream is also to own a pet shop.
  • Animal Motifs: Dogs, as a counterpart to Chifuyu and Kazutora's feline shtick. He's reckless, crazy, and loyal to a fault. His sharp canine teeth are also reminiscent of the animal, and in official art Pah-chin points out that his long, wavy hair looks like fur.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: Baji has long, unkempt hair. In the events of Bloody Halloween, his hair is tied in a ponytail.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Kazutora fatally stabs Baji, but at the end of the fight, Baji stabs himself to end his life so that Kazutora would not be blamed for his death.
  • Blood Knight: Baji enjoys the thrill of a fight and once set fire to a car because he was hungry. In chapter 223, Chifuyu shares that anyone who went against Baji were stripped naked while he beat them up, and Draken warns him not to go too far with Baji's bloodlust.
  • Book Dumb: Baji was held back a year in middle school and is very bad at kanji, so much that he can't even write Kazutora's name correctly.
  • Celibate Hero: In the Official Tokyo Revengers Character book, he is ranked number one in the poll "who do you want to be your boyfriend?" but he responds to the results/sentiments with a "What? I'm not interested in that".
  • Childhood Friends: Baji is Mikey's oldest friend, having been a student at his grandfather's dojo since they were little.
  • Cooldown Hug: Baji hugs and tries to calm Kazutora down shortly after Kazutora accidentally kills Shinichiro.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: After Kisaki is appointed as Pah-chin's replacement, Baji punches Takemichi for punching Kisaki. Chifuyu later reveals that if Baji hadn't stepped in to do that first, the rest of the captains would have beaten up Takemichi themselves and he would have been even worse off.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Baji dies in Chifuyu's arms.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Mikey describes him as pretty weird. Apparently, he once lit a car on fire because he was hungry.
  • Fake Defector: Baji betrays the Tokyo Manji Gang to join Valhalla. Takemichi later learns that Baji was suspicious about Kisaki and pretended to betray the gang so he could get intel.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Baji smiles upon his death.
  • The Glasses Come Off: When Baji saves Chifuyu from getting attacked, he takes off his glasses before fighting.
  • Held Back in School: Baji is held back a year because of his poor grades. In fact, he is very bad at writing basic kanji.
  • In the Back: Kazutora stabs Baji from behind.
  • Killed Off for Real: Despite trying to save Baji, Takemichi is unable to prevent his death and he dies during the events of Bloody Halloween.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Baji is stabbed in the back by Kazutora, but he shrugs it off. However, the injury is more fatal than it looks, and he ends up dying from it.
  • Mama's Boy: When Chifuyu asks him about why he dresses up very formally at school, he says it's because he didn't want his mother to be upset, especially since he is already repeating a year.
  • Memento MacGuffin: After Baji leaves the Tokyo Manji Gang, Takemichi finds a charm with a photo of the gang's six founding members inside. After Baji dies, Mikey finds the charm after Takemichi drops it, and the charm is what convinces him to stop assaulting Kazutora.
  • Morality Chain: To Mikey. Like Draken, Shinichiro and Emma, Baji's presence grounded his friend and helped him stay on the right path - he was notably the one who talked Mikey out of killing Kazutora, multiple times, after the latter got out of juvie. His death was one of the reasons for Mikey's worsening mental state over the years.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: At school, Baji wears a pair of Opaque Lenses to make him look like a good student.
  • Sacrificial Lion: He's the first character to be permanently killed, but far from the last.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Baji loves Peyoung Yakisoba and often splits it with Chifuyu.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Toman, in particular his close friends the founding members.

    Chifuyu Matsuno

Chifuyu Matsuno

Voiced by: Shou Karino (Japanese), Adam McArthur (English), Sebastián Adame Banquells [Season 1], Héctor Emmanuel Gómez [Season 2] (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/matsuno.png

Chifuyu is the vice-captain of Tokyo Manji Gang's 1st division. He respects and admires his captain Baji.

  • Animal Lover: Is very affectionate with his pet cat, works at a pet shop in the current arc, and owns a pet shop in the present timeline.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats, as a counterpart to Baji's dog theme. Chifuyu is fiercely loyal to those he trusts, playful, and clever. His eyes are also somewhat cat-like and he loves the animal itself, owning one which he picked up from the streets as a kitten and designing the logo for the Thousand Winters gang after him.
  • Boom, Headshot!: During the Black Dragon arc, present-day Chifuyu is killed when Kisaki shoots him in the head. It happens again during the Tenjiku arc, where present-day Chifuyu is killed by Mikey this time.
  • Character Development: Used to be a notorious punk who had a tendency to be haughty and rude towards people he didn't know or trust. After meeting Baji (who was the first person respected, according to him), he becomes much more polite and humble.
  • The Confidant: After Takemichi officially joins the Tokyo Manji Gang, Chifuyu is the first person he turns to for help.
  • Delinquent Hair: Sported a pompadour when he started middle school. By the time of the story events, he has a bleached undercut.
  • Disappeared Dad: The DVD extras reveal that Chifuyu's father died when he was very young, and his mother raised him alone.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In the anime, Chifuyu is shown during the fight on August 3, 2005, whereas in the manga, he is not introduced until the Valhalla arc.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Chifuyu has bleach-blond hair in the past, but in the present, his hair is black.
  • Good Is Dumb: Takemichi has to convince Mikey not to let Hakkai leave the Tokyo Manji Gang and has Chifuyu help him come up with a plan. Chifuyu's plan is to bribe Mikey with his Trademark Favorite Food, and when that didn't work, he had nothing left.
  • Honor Before Reason: In the Black Dragons arc, Chifuyu was close to defeating Kisaki in the present and had procured video footage that would ensure his arrest. However, he decides not to turn it in because the video was specifically of Takemichi unknowingly ordering Atsushi to kill Hinata. This results in Kisaki figuring out his plan when the police begin to raid the Tokyo Manji Gang, and it eventually results in Chifuyu's death.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Chifuyu is very kind and also loves animals. He owns a cat named Peke J, who he enjoys playing with, and in the current present timeline, he runs a pet shop.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: In the final arc, he finally manages to defeat the much bigger Mocchi, with both of them lampshading it.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Chifuyu narrates the final chapter and states that, for some reason, he recalls all the times when Takemichi rallied the Tokyo Manji Gang into decisive battles, showing that he may have remembered all the previous timelines without realizing it.
  • Secret-Keeper: Aside from present-day Naoto, Chifuyu is the only person who knows and believes Takemichi is traveling through time after Takemichi tells him in chapter 82, at least up until the Tenjiku arc, where Takemichi accidentally confesses it to Hinata, who later tells Mikey and Draken.
  • Sore Loser: As a prideful person, taking a loss well isn't one of Chifuyu's best qualities. After getting beaten by Mocchi, he refuses to acknowledge his defeat and seeks to get revenge on him during the fight with Tenjiku. Then Mocchi leaves their duel and gets knocked out by Angry, much to Chifuyu's displeasure. When they meet again two years later, he still isn't over it and claims that he's going to take Mocchi down for good this time.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He and his mother look like gender-flipped versions of each other.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Kisaki and Hanma during the Black Dragon arc.
  • Undying Loyalty: Chifuyu is very loyal to Baji and admires him, after Baji saves him from a biker gang that wanted revenge of Chifuyu after the latter beat up some of their members. Later on, he becomes loyal to Takemichi, nominating him to be his new captain.

    Hajime Kokonoi

    Seishu Inui

    Atsushi Sendo (Akkun)

Atsushi Sendo (Akkun)

Voiced by: Takuma Terashima (Japanese), John Omohundro (English), Abraham Toscano (Latin American Spanish)

Portrayed by: Hayato Isomura (film), Masaki Nakao (stage play)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akkun_visual_7.png

Akkun is Takemichi's friend. He later joins the Tokyo Manji Gang.

  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • He and the other Mizo Middle Five jump to Takemichi and Draken's help against Kiyomasa and his gang.
    • In the final arc, he interrupts Shion's "fight" against his friends.
  • Broken Bird: Akkun acts as Takemichi's Number Two, and Takemichi describes him as the reliable, big brother type. Therefore, it comes as a surprise to Takemichi when in the present, Akkun turns out to be hardened by the gang life and attempts to kill Takemichi and Hinata every time, eventually committing suicide.
  • Character Development: Akkun is initially very willing to bring a knife to a fist fight. In the final arc, he refuses to use weapons against Shion Madarame despite getting badly injured during their duel, and eventually manages to defeat him with a solid punch to the jaw instead.
  • Delinquent Hair: Like many of the other characters, he has dyed hair and styles his hair in a pompadour.
  • Driven to Suicide: In present timelines, Akkun commits suicide out of fear of Kisaki.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic.
  • The Heart: Has this role within Takemichi's friend group, being the caring, level-headed voice of reason.
  • Heroic Second Wind: In the final arc, Akkun spends most of his fight against Shion on the receiving end of his attacks and winds up a bloody mess. He ends up finding the strength to get back up and provoke Shion, managing to land a single punch which ends the fight.
  • I Shall Taunt You: During his fight against Shion, Akkun goads his opponent into attacking by daring him to come at him. This effectively results in pissing the other off, leading him to drop his guard and leaving him open to a jaw punch which knocks him out for good.
  • Only Sane Man: Especially compared to the other, more eccentric Mizo Middle Five members.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: To Shion, right before defeating him during their fight in the final arc.
Akkun: Madarame, you shit... You're using weapons. You'll never get to the top like that!
  • Social Circle Filler: Like the rest of Takemichi's friends, he rarely appears once Takemichi befriends the Tokyo Manji Gang and the story focuses on them.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Violently fights off and defeats Shion with his bare fists in the final arc.

    Takuya Yamamoto

Takuya Yamamoto

Voiced by: Yūya Hirose (Japanese), Will Choi (English), Ángel Contreras (Latin American Spanish)

Portrayed by: Shunji Tagawa (film)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takuya_visual_4.png

Takuya is Takemichi's childhood friend. He later joins the Tokyo Manji Gang.

  • Childhood Friends: Takuya is introduced as Takemichi's childhood friend, and he is seen hanging out with Takemichi in flashbacks when they were children.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic.
  • Social Circle Filler: Like the rest of Takemichi's friends, he rarely appears once Takemichi befriends the Tokyo Manji Gang and the story focuses on them. Compared to Akkun and Yamagishi, Takuya and Makoto rarely have speaking appearances or even have an impact on the plot.

    Makoto Suzuki

Makoto Suzuki

Voiced by: Shunsuke Takeuchi (Japanese), Manny Rojo (Latin American Spanish)

Portrayed by: Rion Takahashi (film)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makoto_visual_4.png

Makoto is Takemichi's friend. He later joins the Tokyo Manji Gang.

  • Dirty Kid: The character book states that he enjoys watching porn, idolizes Taka Kato (a porn actor), and dreams of getting all the porn in the world.
  • Does Not Like Men: A male example. The character book states that he hates "all men".
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Makoto is nothing but a bag of raging sexual hormones craving satisfaction. And he's not afraid to admit it.

    Kazushi Yamagishi

Kazushi Yamagishi

Voiced by: Shouta Hayama (Japanese), Jonathan Leon (English), Diego Romagnoli (Latin American Spanish)

Portrayed by: Hinata Todo (film)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kazushi_visual_5.png

Yamagishi is Takemichi's friend. He later joins the Tokyo Manji Gang.

  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: Yamagishi is an expert on everything surrounding gangs. He knows every one of Japan's gangs, their history and their habits like the back of his hand, and accumulates whatever intel he can find on them.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: To a lesser extent than Makoto, but they both share the same enthusiasm for adult magazines.
  • Knowledge Broker: Yamagishi is up-to-date on news about gangs. If present-day Naoto is unavailable for information, Takemichi usually gets his information from him.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's often used to provide exposition regarding gang rituals or the situation of the gang world.
  • Nerd Glasses: He wears big red glasses.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Yamagishi is known as a delinquent Otaku and is practically a walking encyclopedia for them. He also wears glasses. Subverted in that he's not actually smart, just very passionate and knowledgeable about a specific topic.
  • Social Circle Filler: Like the rest of Takemichi's friends, he rarely appears once Takemichi befriends the Tokyo Manji Gang and the story focuses on them.

Second Division

    Takashi Mitsuya

Takashi Mitsuya

Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Japanese), Grant George (English), Fer Castañeda (Latin American Spanish)

Portrayed by: Gordon Maeda (film), Rita Aizawa (stage play)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mitsuya.png

Mitsuya is the captain of Tokyo Manji Gang's 2nd division and one of the group's founders.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Aside from being the only man in an all-girls club, something very uncommon in Japan, and having traditionally feminine interests like sewing and fashion, Mitsuya never shows any attraction towards women. During an afternoon at the beach between the Toman founders, Kazutora and Pah-chin both enjoy the sight of so many girls wearing bikinis while Draken (who was raised in a brothel) and Mitsuya are completely unfazed and run towards the water instead.
  • Berserk Button: Domestic abuse — specifically older brothers being violent towards their younger sisters.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Mitsuya is the oldest sibling in his family and takes care of his two younger sisters while their mother works. Because of this, he knows how to deal with Hakkai and becomes a role model for him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In chapter 96, Mitsuya arrives in the church just in time to stop Yuzuha from stabbing Taiju again.
  • Cool Big Bro: For Hakkai, who admired him greatly.
  • Foil: Mitsuya is a foil to Taiju. He's a kind, loving older brother to his two younger sisters in place of their busy single mother. Taiju, on the other hand, has a father busy with work and is cruel to his younger siblings, regularly beating them. Hakkai has a good relationship with Mitsuya, admiring him for being a good older brother, but decides to kill his older brother Taiju to stop his abuse of their sister Yuzuha.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: In the final arc, Mitsuya decides to enter a prestigious rookie fashion design contest, which causes Takemichi to change his mind about recruiting him to his new gang, Thousand Winters. However, Mitsuya has no intention of pursuing fashion design if it meant leaving his friends behind, so he ultimately sacrifices his fashion design career to join Takemichi.
  • Hopeless with Tech: The official twitter account of Tokyo Revengers reveal that Mitsuya is bad with technology related things, with Hakkai mentioning that Mitsuya types the keyboard with only one finger.
  • Killed Offscreen:
    • In the Black Dragons arc, Mitsuya goes missing in the present and Kazutora later assumes that he is killed.
    • In the Tenjiku arc, present-day Mikey has Mitsuya strangled to death.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: In the final arc, Mitsuya grew his hair out in high school.
  • Martial Pacifist: Despite being an excellent brawler, he only resorts to fighting when more peaceful options have failed. He goes out of his way to negotiate with the likes of Taiju, and once told Hakkai that violence was only acceptable when used to protect others.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: A flashback shows him and Draken completely ignoring bikini-clad women on the beach and dashing to play in the ocean instead, baffling Kazutora.
  • Parental Neglect: Mitsuya's dad is not in the picture and his mother works late hours, so he is the one often doing chores at home.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Mitsuya knows how to cook and sew. He becomes the captain of his middle school's sewing club and is the one who made the Tokyo Manji Gang's uniform. In the Bonten timeline, he becomes a fashion designer.
  • Starts with Their Funeral: During the Tenjiku arc, when Takemichi returns to the present, he realizes he is dressed up for a funeral for none other than Mitsuya, who was strangled to death.
  • Tattooed Crook: Like Draken, Mitsuya also has a dragon tattoo on his head.
  • The Worf Effect: In chapter 128, Ran Haitani knocks him out with a cement block to show how formidable Tenjiku is. Mitsuya also sits out during the Kanto incident after Tenjiku severely injures him offscreen.

    Hakkai Shiba

Hakkai Shiba

Voiced by: Tasuku Hatanaka (Japanese), Landon McDonald (English), Iván Cervantes [Season 1], Alan Bravo [Season 2] (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiba_visual.png

Hakkai is the vice-captain of Tokyo Manji Gang's 2nd division.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Despite being unable to talk to girls, Hakkai is very comfortable with guys. Most of all, he's extremely attached to Mitsuya, something several characters comment on. He set a picture of Mitsuya as his phone lockscreen, wondered who wouldn't fall in love with him, was baffled upon finding out Yuzuha had a crush on Takemichi instead of Mitsuya, nicknamed him "Taka-chan", became a model so they'd remain close, ignored a herd of fangirls to go meet him, doesn't have a girlfriend in the present despite being a Chick Magnet, and even called him "hot". While he says that he sees Mitsuya as a brother, it's left ambiguous whether Hakkai's feelings towards him are truly platonic or if he's just unaware of his own crush.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: In the Tenjiku arc, it's noted that Hakkai is pretty spoiled due to being the youngest sibling in the family.
  • Big Brother Worship: Rather than Taiju, his real-life brother, Hakkai greatly admires Mitsuya, so much that the background of his phone is a picture of him. Mikey accurately predicts that in the future, Hakkai will have a job where he will work closely with Mitsuya.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Taiju's Cain, who is the abusive older sibling who would hit Hakkai more to protect their sister. Taiju breaking his promise to Hakkai and continuing to beat Yuzuha leads Hakkai to leave Toman and join the Black Dragons to kill Taiju, even after promising to free Yuzuha if Taka lets Hakkai join the Black Dragons because he believes Taiju won't keep his agreement. Later on, it's revealed that Yuzuha was actually protecting Hakkai from Taiju, taking the beatings for him.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: Hakkai is very shy around women and cannot talk to any of them outside of his sister. In fact, Yuzuha notes that it took 10 years for him to be comfortable around Hinata.
  • Chick Magnet: In the present, Hakkai becomes a famous model with a large female following.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In the anime, Hakkai is shown during the fight on August 3, 2005, whereas in the manga, he is not introduced until the Black Dragons arc.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In the past, Hakkai has a buzz cut with a swirling design on the side of his head, which he also has in the present during the Black Dragons arc. In high school, he has long black hair. His present self still has a buzz cut, but his hair is dyed blond.
  • Extreme Doormat: Hakkai is too scared of Taiju to disobey him. During the final fight, it takes a while for him to be convinced to stand up to him.
  • Fat Bastard: His initial appearance in the present timeline of the Black Dragon arc depicts him as an overweight Jerkass mobster who spends the whole dinner insulting the Toman founding members while stuffing his face with food.
  • Man on Fire: During the Tenjiku arc, present-day Mikey kills Hakkai by setting him on fire.
  • Parental Neglect: Hakkai's dad is often away at work and his mother died.
  • Scars Are Forever: Hakkai has a scar on his lip.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Hakkai is only a vice-captain under Mitsuya's division, but whether he joins the Black Dragons is critical to whether they will merge with the Tokyo Manji Gang and thus corrupt Mikey.
  • Snowball Lie: Hakkai claims that he made an agreement with Taiju to protect Yuzuha and accept his beatings in her place, which makes Takemichi and the others believe that he is only joining the Black Dragons to protect her. However, this is a complete lie — Hakkai joins because he's scared of Taiju, and Yuzuha was the one who accepted Taiju's beatings in Hakkai's place to protect him.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: It takes a lot out of him to actually stand against Taiju due to having been on the receiving end of Taiju's abuse for so long, in the same vein most abuse victims in real life took a long time to finally stand their ground to escape and get out of the abusive situation that they are in.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite his height and mature looks, he's the same age as Takemichi, a fact that shocks the latter.

Third Division

    Haruki Hayashida (Pah-chin)

Haruki Hayashida (Pah-chin)

Voiced by: Subaru Kimura (Japanese), Chris Hackney (English), Guillermo López [Season 1], Emmanuel Bernal [Season 2] (Latin American Spanish)

Portrayed by: Kazuki Horike (film), Daichi Nakajima (stage play)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/paachin.png

Pah-chin is the captain of Tokyo Manji Gang's 3rd division and one of the group's founders.

  • Childhood Friends:
    • Peh-yan and him met in kindergarten, and have been inseparable ever since.
    • With Moriyumi, his bully-turned-friend-turned-wife.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Pah-chin is the first of the main characters to get married, and he marries his Childhood Friend.
  • The Ditz: He's an absolute idiot, and will proudly admit it.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's strong enough to get rid of entire divisions on his own, but a complete moron outside of fights.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Peh-yan and him are hardly ever seen apart and even end up working together as adults.
  • Killed Offscreen:
    • In the Black Dragons arc, present-day Pah-chin is killed after Kisaki apprehends Takemichi and Chifuyu. This is an Averted Trope in the anime, which shows a scene of him shot to death.
    • In the Tenjiku arc, present-day Mikey has him killed.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: Downplayed. He's thick as a brick, but underneath all his arrogance and brusque manners is someone who deeply cares about his friends and loved ones, and is willing to do anything in his power to help them should they need it.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Peh-yan and him bicker a fair amount and don't chew their words around each other, but their bond is unbreakable.
  • Out of Focus: Pah-chin does not get any character focus in the series, and during the Moebius arc, he is sent to juvenile detention for stabbing Osanai. Even after he is released, the narrative does not focus on him.
  • Put on a Bus: Pah-chin gets sent to juvenile detention very early in the series.
    • The Bus Came Back: He gets released at some point during the two-year timeskip before the final arc, and eventually joins the reformed Toman led by Takemichi.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He doesn't get much character focus, but his arrest after the stabbing of Osanai is one of the events that directly led to Mikey and Draken breaking up and Toman becoming one of the top gangs in Tokyo in the original timeline.
  • Stout Strength: Pah-chin is rather heavyset and plenty strong.

Peh-yan is the vice-captain of Tokyo Manji Gang's 3rd division. After the Moebius arc, he becomes a member of the 2nd division under Mitsuya.

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Yasuda and him are constantly at each other's throats, but a lot of the other Sewing Club members think they act Like an Old Married Couple.
  • Childhood Friends: Pah-chin and him met in kindergarten, and have been inseparable ever since.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's a bumbling idiot outside of fights, but get him fired up enough and he shows what he's truly capable of. The Tenjiku arc reveals that he actually surpasses Mitsuya when it comes to physical strength.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Peh-yan becomes the Tokyo Manji Gang's representative during their opening fight with Tenjiku, and he downs Madarame with a single punch.
  • The Ditz: He's only slightly smarter than Pah-chin; that's how low the bar is.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's strong enough to toss multiple people around on his own, but a complete moron outside of fights.
  • Face of a Thug: Played with. Peh-yan is noted to be very intimidating, sometimes unwittingly. While he does have a temper and a gross lack of social skills, he's not a bad person and is truly loyal and kindhearted to those he cares about.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: During the battle against Tenjiku, he was seen flinging enemy gang members around and using them to hit their comrades.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Pah-chin and him are hardly ever seen apart and even end up working together as adults. Peh-yan was devastated when Pah got sent to juvenile detention.
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothes: Peh-yan dresses like a stereotypical delinquent whenever he's not in his uniform, including chain necklaces, gaudy shirts and baggy pants. Takemichi and Yasuda both think it looks terrible.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In one of the extras of the home release, Yasuda is unable to recruit any members into the sewing club. Peh-yan points out it's because the recruitment form she made was boring, unaware that she had spent three days without sleep working on it.
  • Killed Offscreen: In the Black Dragons arc, present-day Peh-yan is killed after Kisaki apprehends Takemichi and Chifuyu. This is an Averted Trope in the anime, which shows his dead body and that he was possibly killed trying to shield Pah-chin from bullets.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: Downplayed. He's rather abrasive and bossy, but does have a good heart and is loyal to a fault.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Pah-chin and him bicker a fair amount and don't chew their words around each other, but their bond is unbreakable.
  • Undying Loyalty: Peh-yan is fiercely loyal to Pah-chin, to the point that in one timeline, he betrays the Tokyo Manji Gang and allows Draken to get fatally stabbed because he felt that they were throwing Pah-chin under the bus.

Click here to see Kisaki 12 years ago

A mysterious man and the main antagonist of Tokyo Revengers, rising to the top of Toman by manipulating Mikey.

  • Ambition Is Evil: Kisaki is infamously ruthless, ambitious and power-hungry. In the present timeline, he's the head of a criminal empire at only 25 years old.
  • Arch-Enemy: Kisaki goes out of his way to become Takemichi's most personal and vindictive foe, being the main obstacle in his path to save Hina across multiple timelines and goes so far as to orchestrate his murder in at least two of them. Even after his death, his machinations continue to haunt Takemichi in how they drive Mikey to darkness, leading to Takemichi leaping into the past one last time to save his friend.
  • Asshole Victim: Kisaki was an utter scumbag who caused so much misery for Takemichi and his friends. To say getting ran over by a truck was nothing short of long overdue comeuppance.
  • Big Bad: Kisaki starts out as the major Big Bad for a good majority of the series. By the final arc, with Kisaki dead, this is no longer the case. Although the ensuing problems he's still causing post-mortem certainly highlight he is the series' most devious and destructive antagonist.
  • Body Horror: Kisaki is hit by a truck at the end of the Tenjiku arc, breaking his arms and legs and putting them in unnatural angles.
  • Brains and Brawn: The Brains to Osanai and Hanma's Brawn.
  • The Chessmaster:
    • He orchestrated all the problems that happened to the Tokyo Manji Gang. First, he coerced Moebius to attack Pah-chin's friend to give the Tokyo Manji Gang a reason to fight them. When that caused the infighting, he manipulated Kiyomasa and Peh-yan to try to get Draken stabbed so that he could become the vice president of Toman.
    • When that didn't work, Kisaki then had Toman fight Valhalla, in actuality being its true leader, so that if Toman loses it would get absorbed under Valhalla, and if Toman won Kisaki would use his actions to raise his rank in the gang, getting his way regardless.
    • And when that didn't work, he tried to convince Yuzuha into killing Taiju. This would then cause Hakkai to be put under Kisaki's control in exchange for protecting Yuzuha. Afterwards, the Black Dragons would merge with the Tokyo Manji Gang, whose activities would eventually corrupt Mikey.
    • And when that didn't work, Kisaki manipulates Izana into targeting Mikey and isolating him from his friends, eventually convincing Mikey to kill all of them.
  • The Corrupter: He was the one behind Mikey's turn to crime in every present timeline, actively working to isolate him from his friends and loved ones, so that he would have no one to rely on but Kisaki himself and would give in to his inner darkness.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He can't stand the thought of Hinata being with anyone but him, so he killed her and Takemichi in every present timeline after she rejected his advances.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Gets ran over by a truck and dies while bathing in his own blood.
  • Death by Irony: After causing Hinata's death in multiple timelines by having Akkun crash into her with a car, he dies from accidentally getting hit by a truck. For all of Kisaki's careful planning and waiting, he gets undone by a random event that he couldn't have accounted for.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Mikey kicking both him and Hanma out of the Toman following the Christmas Night fight caused him to have a full-on Villainous Breakdown.
    • Izana flinging himself in front of Kisaki to take the bullets meant for Kakucho, and dying as a result, was definitely not something Kisaki expected to happen. It also threw a massive wrench in his plans.
  • Dirty Coward: For all his bluster, Kisaki comes off as a slimy and spineless coward the second the tables are turned against him. He quickly avoids further confrontation once Takemitchi has him cornered, which ultimately led him to be killed in a traffic accident.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Because Hina rejected him in multiple timelines, he got so angry to the point when he believed that due to her not wanting anything to do with him, he INSTEAD would take her life in order to prevent anyone from having her!
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Kisaki's send-off is almost laughably sudden and anticlimactic, getting hit by a truck mid-speech then dying within seconds.
  • Enemy Mine: Despite knowing that Kisaki is responsible for Baji and Hinata's deaths and being very much unhappy about it, Takemichi chooses to work with him to stop Hakkai from killing Taiju as well as learn something about him to kick him out of Toman and prevent the Bad Future.
  • Entitled to Have You: Because Kisaki had known Hinata the longest and has had a crush on her since elementary school, he believes that as the smartest person in their cram school, he was entitled to have her. His motivation for controlling Mikey and creating the most powerful gang in Japan was just so Hinata would have no reason to turn him down.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Hanma is the only one who genuinely grieved for Kisaki's passing due to his Undying Loyalty for him and visits his grave from time to time, and in spite of all that he did, Takemichi still had a respect for Kisaki.
  • Evil Duo: The ambitious, manipulative Superego to Osanai and later Hanma's brutal, hedonistic Id.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Hinata reveals that she and Kisaki had met Takemichi when they were in elementary school, when Takemichi had saved Hinata from bullies.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Kisaki wears glasses, showing off his intellect, but he also has a ruthless, selfish side.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Kisaki was an unassuming middle school student who becomes one of the most dangerous characters in the story.
  • Hate Sink: The sheer amount of terrible things he orchastrated in his quest for power makes him undeniably this, and he did it all because of his one-sided obsession with a girl he eventually had murdered.
  • Hero Killer: He kills Izana and Emma and is responsible for manipulating Kazutora into fatally stabbing Baji. In alternate timelines, he kills Naoto and Chifuyu and is responsible for Draken's death thanks to manipulating Peh-yan.
  • If I Can't Have You…: The reason why Hinata dies in every present timeline, despite not having anything to do with the gangs, is because she ends up rejecting Kisaki every time. He decides that he would rather have her die than to let her be with Takemichi.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: The only friend Kisaki seems to have is Hanma. Even as a child, he was shown by himself a lot when not in the company of Hinata, who was the only one at their cram school to not be put off by him.
  • It's All About Me: Kisaki becomes this, because he's trying to convince a girl named Hinata onto marrying him instead of Takemichi, so he can win her heart all by himself, but... In Chapter 182, in Takemichi's mind, Takemichi sees Kisaki proposing to Hinata, however, she apologizes and rejects Kisaki, by turning him down.
  • Karmic Death: He orchestrates Hinata's death by having Akkun crash a car into her. In the Tenjiku arc, he gets ran over a truck in the most graphic and gruesome way possible.
  • Killed Off for Real: He dies after getting hit by a truck at the end of the Tenjiku arc.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Every time Kisaki has his screen time, there's nothing remotely comedic about him the more his true colors are exposed. Not to mention that he has the most body counts in the series.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: A favorite method of his, considering his lack of physical strength and Manipulative Bastard nature.
    • He orchestrated the aggression of Pah-chin's friend and friend's girlfriend in order to pit Moebius and Toman against each other, secretly manipulating Pah and Kiyomasa into stabbing Osanai and Draken respectively as part of his machinations to climb the ranks within Toman.
    • Later, he put Hanma in charge of Valhalla and recruited Kazutora into it, before having them declare war on Toman.
    • Later, he manipulated Chifuyu, Takemichi, Hakkai and Yuzuha into fighting Taiju on Christmas night.
    • And again later, he sought out then-retired Izana and helped him create Tenjiku, leading to the Kanto Incident against Toman.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: The whole reason why Kisaki became involved with gangs? It's because he has had a crush on Hinata since elementary school, and he hopes that by becoming a top executive for the most powerful gang in Japan, she would fall in love with him.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Kisaki is able to keep a low profile while subtly convincing others to act out in revenge, all to gain control of Mikey and use his charisma to create a powerful gang.
  • Mirror Character: To Takemitchy. A weak fighter that relies in gumption and relentless determination to influence people much stronger than him. But where Takemitchy is a brave leader that inspires others with his willingness to challenge enemies he can't beat and rise up time and time again, Kisaki is sort of cowardly and hides behind his men, leading them with brains and charisma.
  • Narcissist: Kisaki has an overinflated opinion of himself, viewing others as vastly inferior beings compared to his genius, while also being extremely sensitive to the way he's perceived by people and craving validation and recognition. His personal goals are all that matters to him, and he's willing to do anything to reach them, no matter how many people he has to manipulate and take down in his quest for power and dominance. He's also utterly incapable of taking responsibility for his actions, accepting criticism or rejection, or acknowledging that he's failed at something. The extent of his delusional mindset is shown at the end of the Tenjiku arc, when he accuses Takemichi of "betraying" him by dating Hinata, "his" woman, despite Takemichi not knowing who Kisaki was until recently, much less that the other supposedly admired him.
  • Not Good with Rejection: He does not take Hinata turning him down well, as confirmed when he murders her and Takemichi in retaliation in every single present timeline.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Type C. He's remarkably competent and cunning, but there are also times where he just comes off as petulant. His actions in the present timelines are also essentially him throwing a massive, deranged, violent temper tantrum through murder, and further adding to his immaturity are his delusions of grandeur and sense of entitlement.
  • Rape as Drama: He was secretly the one behind Moebius's assault of Pah-chin's friend's girlfriend, which he organized to drive Pah-chin into stabbing Osanai, who was thought to be responsible for it. This caused Toman's infighting and allowed Kisaki to gain Mikey's trust, infiltrate their ranks and, in the original timeline, replace Draken after he died during the battle of 8/3.
  • Red Herring: Takemichi and Naoto suspect that Kisaki is also a time traveler, but Kisaki himself later admits it's not true.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The cunning and cold Blue to Osanai and Hanma's impulsive and excitable Red.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Kisaki is incredibly smart, having scored the top ranking at his cram school. Aside from that, his machinations to take over the Tokyo Manji Gang are evidence that he's very calculating.
  • Smug Snake: His Fatal Flaw. His cunning and charisma is overshadowed by his own inflated ego and poor impulse control. As soon his chameleon-like bluster crumbles, revealing the slimy and pathetic coward underneath who hides behind his men.
  • The Sociopath: He cares for no one other than himself, he's thoroughly manipulative and vindictive, and views the people around him as stepping stones for his own selfish ambitions.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Chifuyu and Takemichi during the Black Dragon arc. Of course, he was planning to betray them from the start anyway.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Subverted in the second alternative timeline in which he seemingly redeemed himself after having Baji killed, only to reveal that he never regretted this in the first place. However, in the most recent altered timeline, he might have became this as Takemichi's death during his battle with Mikey allowed him to travel back in time, erasing all of the events that had ever happened in the main timeline of the manga and possibly giving Takemichi the opportunity to talk Kisaki out of his evil tendencies before inviting him to join the Tokyo Manji gang. However, this makes the crimes that his other counterparts have committed viciously ironic...
  • Undignified Death: His death in the Tenjiku arc stands out as one of the most anticlimactic, gruesome and humiliating, yet well-deserved deaths in the series.
  • The Unreveal: Takemichi suspects that Kisaki is also a time traveler and confronts him during the Kanto incident. However, Kisaki denies being one, and when he is about to reveal the truth, he is suddenly hit by a truck.
  • Unknown Rival: Kisaki see's Takemichi as someone he wanted to surpass since their Forgotten First Meeting due to winning Hinata's heart at the time, when he hears Takemichi conversing with Takuya about how he wants to become a top delinquent, Kisaki soon comes up with many plans that would ensure that he could take over Toman not only to make Hinata fall in love with him, he also wants to shove the fact that he's a winner on Takemichi's face. Takemichi, meanwhile, doesn't even know who he is until the start of the story and the more he knows of Kisaki, the more Takemichi loathes him for being a ruthless Manipulative Bastard.
  • Woman Scorned: A very rare male example. Much of what he did in the present timelines, including Hinata and Takemichi's murders, comes from Hinata rejecting him due to still being in love with Takemichi.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Kisaki kills Emma in a hit-and-run. Takemichi even notes his shock that Kisaki would go as far as to hurt a girl to get what he wants. Not to mention, there's the fact that he'd eventually kill Hinata in multiple Bad Future's.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Kisaki tries to get to Mikey by trying to isolate him from the Tokyo Manji Gang, starting with sowing discord between others. So far, he's attempted to convince Kiyomasa and Peh-yan to kill Draken; Pah-chin to fight Moebius; Kazutora and Izana to kill Mikey; Yuzuha to kill Taiju; and successfully talked Izana into letting Kisaki kill Emma.
  • Yandere: To Hinata. Finding out that he can never have her causes him to snap completely.

Fourth Division

    Nahoya Kawata (Smiley)

Nahoya Kawata (Smiley)

Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi (Japanese), Bryce Papenbrook (English), José Luis Piedra (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/smily.png

Nahoya is the captain of Tokyo Manji Gang's 4th division.

  • Always Identical Twins: Soya and him look exactly alike, aside from their hair color and facial expressions.
  • Big Brother Instinct: It's noted in the Tenjiku arc that Soya relies on Nahoya a lot and is rather spoiled because Nahoya takes care of him.
  • Eyes Always Shut: His eyes are always drawn closed to give him the illusion of smiling.
  • Fiery Redhead: Nahoya has orange hair and is notably feisty.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It doesn't take much to get on his nerves, in which case he'll happily resort to violence.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Nahoya isn't just disrespectful and arrogant, he's also the kind of person who thinks threatening anyone who annoys him and running people over (while wondering about having something stuck under his bike) is perfectly normal behavior.
  • I'll Kill You!: Is often giving people death threats, though he thankfully never goes through with them.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: His hair is orange as opposed to his brother's blue, and he usually has a happy look on his face. He also wears his earrings on his left side.
  • Odd Friendship: Nahoya gets along well with the serious, stoic, no-nonsense Muto, and they're often seen together even outside of gang activities - for example at a New Year's festival.
  • Only Known By His Nickname: He is nicknamed Smiley.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Nahoya is always smiling.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: See Red Oni, Blue Oni.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: A literal example with his twin Soya, who is much more timid, polite and softhearted than the impulsive, rude and aggressive Nahoya.
  • Tag Team Twins: He has great teamwork with Soya on the battlefield, being able to instinctively guess each other's intents.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Nahoya and Soya.

    Soya Kawata (Angry) (Spoilers)

Soya Kawata (Angry)

Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/souya_kawata_28full_body___anime29_4.png

Soya is the vice-captain of Tokyo Manji Gang's 4th division and Nahoya's younger twin brother.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Downplayed. He makes his first appearance in Episode 5 of the anime as opposed to Chapter 126, but is kept a voiceless Early-Bird Cameo.
  • Always Identical Twins: Nahoya and him look exactly alike, aside from their hair color and facial expressions. Takemichi actually mistakes Soya for his twin upon first meeting him.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: In the Tenjiku arc, it's noted that he is spoiled because he's the youngest member in the family.
  • The Berserker: Soya starts fighting with reckless abandon the moment he begins to cry, and he ends up remembering very little of it. The first time it occurs was when he saved Nahoya from being attacked, which resulted in him sending all of his opponents to the hospital. The second is during his fight with the Haitani brothers in the Tenjiku arc, where he not only defeats both of them, but also Mochizuki and Muto.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite his intimidating appearance, he is actually one of the kindest members of the gang. However, if he is provoked enough, he goes into a Berserk Mode.
  • Big Brother Worship: Soya admires his older twin brother, Nahoya. In his letter to his future self, he even writes his goal as being able to make sure Nahoya is always smiling.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Once his Berserk Mode is activated, Soya defeats the Haitani brothers, Mochizuki, and Muto all in one fell swoop — even with his right arm and left leg broken.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In the anime, Soya is shown during the fight on August 3, 2005, whereas in the manga, he is not introduced until the Tenjiku arc.
  • Face of a Thug: Soya looks intimidating because he looks angry all the time. However, he is rather soft-hearted and kind, to which Yamagishi points out that Soya's nickname is "the angel who hides behind his anger." When Nahoya elects himself to fight Kakucho, Soya spends the majority of the fight hiding his face, as he is afraid to look.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: His hair is blue as opposed to his brother's orange, and he usually has an angry look on his face. He also wears his earrings on his right side.
  • Identical Twin Mistake: Takemichi thinks he's Nahoya the first time he sees him.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: During the Tenjiku arc, Soya starts ugly-crying after watching Hakkai get beaten by the Haitani brothers, with fountains of tears and snot streaming down his face, complete with loud wailing. Even the Haitanis are shocked by the sight.
  • Only Known By His Nickname: He is nicknamed Angry.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Unlike Nahoya, Soya's default expression is a frown.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: See Red Oni, Blue Oni.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Soya is the Blue Oni to Nahoya's Red Oni, given his "oni" nickname and blue color theme. Soya is much more timid, polite and softhearted than his impulsive, rude and aggressive twin.
  • Tag Team Twins: He has great teamwork with Nahoya on the battlefield, being able to instinctively guess each other's intents. This is actually detrimental to Soya, as unlike Nahoya, he feels lost when he can't rely on his brother.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Soya and Nahoya.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Soya and Hakkai get into an argument when fighting the Haitani brothers during the Tenjiku arc, owing to their lack of compatibility. However, when Hakkai is nearly brutalized to death, Soya becomes desperate to save him and starts crying, triggering his Berserk Mode.
  • Walking Spoiler: His existence is meant to be a big reveal in the manga when Takemichi meets the vice-captain of the fourth division for the first time. Unfortunately, his name alone gives away The Reveal that he's related to Nahoya, while looking up any information and pictures of him gives away the bigger shocks that 1) he's part of Toman and 2) Nahoya and him are identical twins.
  • Weaker Twin Saves the Day: Downplayed. Smiley wasn't killed, but he was unable to join the battle against Tenjiku after getting gravely injured by Shion and Rindo, forcing Soya to lead the fourth division in his stead. After difficult beginnings against the Haitani brothers, he ended up entering his Berserk Mode and taking down two Heavenly Kings and two Tenjiku executives by himself, creating a huge advantage for the outnumbered Toman.
  • When He Smiles: Soya smiles when he looks at the letter he wrote to his future self, which makes Takemichi shocked.

Fifth Division

    Yasuhiro Muto (Mucho) (Spoilers)

Yasuhiro Muto

Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (Japanese), Landon McDonald (English), Ditter Ruiz [Season 1], Mark Pokora [Season 2] (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mucho.png

Muto is the captain of the Tokyo Manji Gang's 5th division, in charge of tracking potential traitors. He quits to join Tenjiku.

  • Big Brother Mentor:
    • To his vice-captain Sanzu, who he took under his wing from a young age, giving him advice and gifting him his trademark mask as well as his own leather jacket. After Sanzu told him he was an only child and always wanted to have an older brother, Muto said that he may view him as such from now on.
    • Kakucho mentions that it was Muto who "taught him how to be a real man".
  • Birds of a Feather: A platonic example with Sanzu. Both of them are strong, entirely loyal to one person who isn't the one readers are initially led to believe, and implied to have no one outside of the gang.
Muto: What's with that look in your eye? You don't have anywhere to go? You and I are pretty alike.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Muto looks like a brute, is one of the physically strongest Toman members, and is an excellent fighter. He's also a Team Dad and a Big Brother Mentor. His soft side particularly shines through in his relationship with Sanzu. During the Kanto Incident, he was moved to tears by the mutual care and determination Toman demonstrated.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: He violently beats Inui and Takemichi in front of Kokonoi, threatening to kill them unless Kokonoi joins Tenjiku.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Implied. He hints at having a less-than-ideal home life (or no home life at all). He also spent several years committing crimes with Izana and the other S-62 until Shinichiro's death caused Izana to disappear, leaving Muto on his own until Mikey recruited him.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 206 is told from his point of view and centered around his relationship with Sanzu, from their first meeting to Muto's death at his vice-captain's hands.
  • Death by Irony:
    • His job in the Tokyo Manji Gang was to eliminate traitors. However, he is killed by Sanzu for betraying the gang.
    • During the Kanto Incident, he tried to kill Angry with a katana. Guess what Sanzu uses to off him?
  • Defrosting Ice King: Muto was initially fairly cold and distant towards Sanzu. However, he quickly felt a kinship with him, and appreciated his strength and loyalty. He started mentoring him, opened up to him, and eventually acted as his big brother figure, having placed his full trust in his vice-captain.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Muto is shocked when Sanzu picks him up from prison only to kill him for betraying Mikey, when all this time he had believed Sanzu was loyal to him.
  • Face–Heel Turn: In the Tenjiku arc, he quits the Tokyo Manji Gang to join Tenjiku.
  • Genius Bruiser: Not only is he the strongest Toman captain, being a trained judoka with an imposing physique, he's also highly intelligent. This is why Mikey put him in charge of the fifth division.
  • The Grappler: Muto fights with a particular grab-and-throw move known as his Signature Move.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: He truly regretted having to betray Mikey, and with Izana dead, he had no more reason to go against Toman. His early release from jail following the Kanto incident also hinted at him possibly turning over a new leaf. Unfortunately, he was killed by Sanzu before he had time to make amends or get a new start in life.
  • Heel Realization: Watching Toman members proclaim that they're not trying to be anything more than a gang of teenagers having fun together and showing off, unlike Tenjiku and their dreams of becoming a criminal organization, Muto tears up and starts questioning Izana's objectives.
  • Humble Goal: The third databook reveals that his life dream is to own a coffee shop.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: He has piercing blue eyes in the manga to reflect his cold, calculating and ruthless nature.
  • Irony: The captain of the fifth division, whose job is to look for any potential traitors, turns out to be a traitor himself.
  • Killed Off for Real: Sanzu kills him with his katana after his release from jail.
  • Manly Tears: Upon seeing Toman's unity and care for each another, a sharp contrast to Tenjiku and the way Izana treats his subordinates, Muto is moved to tears.
  • Meaningful Gift: He was the one who gave Sanzu his mask so that he would have something to hide his scars, as they were causing him problems with other people.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: He holds an Undying Loyalty for Izana and always does what he orders him to (including killing), even if Muto himself doesn’t necessarily approve it.
  • Odd Friendship: Muto gets along well with the feisty, rude, outgoing Nahoya, and they're often seen together even outside of gang activities - for example at a New Year's festival.
  • Only Known By His Nickname: He is nicknamed "Mucho" and referred as such by everyone.
  • Perpetual Frowner: His default expression is a weary scowl.
  • Regretful Traitor: Despite his Undying Loyalty to Izana, Muto wasn't elated at the idea of fighting Toman, even telling Takemichi that things would have been different had he met Mikey first.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Chapter 206 shows him playing a game of shogi with his future vice-captain Sanzu, during which Muto comments on Sanzu's choice of strategy and gives him advice.
  • The Stoic: He is a man of few words and rarely emotes.
    • Not So Stoic: From overtly showing anger to fear, surprise and regret, Muto is at his most expressive during the Tenjiku arc, especially following his defeat against Angry.
  • Strong and Skilled: Muto displays remarkable judo skills in addition to his physical strength.
  • Taking the Heat: He and the other Tenjiku executives willingly shoulder the full responsibility for the Kanto conflict, telling everyone else to leave before police arrive so that they're the only ones to get arrested.
  • Team Dad: Despite his gruff exterior, he has his moments. Due to being older than other Toman members by a few years, Muto is more mature and experienced, a fact which serves him well in his relationship with the rest of the gang. He notably reassured and comforted Hakkai after the Christmas conflict, was able to gain his vice-captain Sanzu's trust by showing him patience and giving him advice, and was mentioned to have mentored Kakucho.
  • Tears of Remorse: As Muto dies under Sanzu's blade, he weeps and ponders that this is his punishment for betraying Toman.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Broke the spine of a man he was fighting when he was thirteen, landing him in juvie, where he met Izana and the rest of the S-62. They later did all kinds of crimes together, from robbery to assault and drug trafficking, before they turned sixteen.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Zig-zagged. Before joining Toman, Muto partook in drug selling, assault, robbery and other supposedly heinous crimes - being sent to juvie at 13 for breaking a man's spine and leaving him paralyzed. By the time of the story, he acts as a Big Brother Mentor to Sanzu and is highly respected in Toman... until he betrays them to join Tenjiku. Despite being clearly torn up about it, he ultimately chooses his old allegiance to Izana and is even willing to kill for him.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Izana. He actually warned Mikey about it upon his recruitment, saying that he already followed an "absolute king". Though Muto truly enjoyed his time in Toman, he was unable to go against Izana's orders when the time came for S-62 to assemble.

Sanzu is the vice-captain of the Tokyo Manji Gang's 5th division, which is in charge of investigating and attacking potential traitors. However, he follows the captain Muto to join the Tenjiku. He later joins Bonten.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Downplayed. In the manga he doesn't make his first appearance until Chapter 138, while in the anime he first shows up in Episode 5. However, he still plays a fairly minor role and is only really used to fill out the numbers when the gang are all together, which keeps his importance to the final arc a secret.
  • Ax-Crazy: He will purge anyone who opposes his "king" Mikey.
  • Beneath the Mask: During his time in Toman, Sanzu is quiet, stoic, and seemingly entirely obedient to Muto. It's eventually revealed that this was all an act, and once he shows his true face by proclaiming his allegiance to Mikey alone, he turns out to be quite talkative, expressive and trigger-happy.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insult Toman or Mikey in front of him.
  • Best Served Cold: He pretended to willingly go along with Muto's plan to betray Toman, joining Tenjiku, fighting in the battle against their former gang and waiting for his former captain to get released from jail for one year. It was only then that Sanzu took him to a secluded location (which happened to be where Tenjiku fought Toman) and slashed him with his sword, killing him as retribution for turning against Mikey.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Sanzu rarely talks, but he's a Toman vice-captain and more than capable of pulling his weight in a fight. He's also a skilled manipulator, being able to fool Muto into believing that he was still loyal to him before killing him for betraying Mikey, and possibly one of the most unhinged and cold-blooded characters in the entire series.
  • Boom, Headshot!: He kills three traitors that way in the Bonten present timeline.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Senju's Abel. He was The Unfavorite as a child, was involved in an incident where Senju's lying caused him to get permanently scarred both physically and psychologically, and seemingly cut all ties with his family at some point. By the time they're teenagers, the two of them are in enemy gangs and Sanzu visibly despises his sister. They end up facing each other during the final battle.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Sanzu is seen briefly in early parts of the manga when the Tokyo Manji Gang are introduced, but he does not get character focus until the final arc, which fleshes out his personality and motivations.
  • Childhood Friends: Chapter 240 reveals he used to always play with Mikey and Baji when they were children.
  • Combat Pragmatist: As he points out to Kakucho, no matter how strong one is, fighting is just easier when you use weapons.
  • Consummate Liar: He was able to fool the incredibly perceptive and cautious Muto about his true nature and past for years by pretending to be an only child and completely devoted to him, even managing to gain his captain's full trust.
  • Cool Mask: The lower half of his face is always covered with one, which was gifted to him by Muto. Sanzu stops wearing it after killing him.
  • The Corrupter: Sanzu becomes Mikey's right-hand man in the Kanto Manji Gang following the Tokyo Manji's disbandment and, unlike the original Toman founding members, actively supports and encourages him down his path of villainy, much like Kisaki did in alternate timelines.
  • Dark Horse Sibling: Was The Unfavorite as a child, often getting reprimanded by Takeomi over minor things, sometimes to the point of driving him to tears. He then rejected his family entirely as a teenager. By the time the Bonten present rolls around, Sanzu outranks Takeomi in the gang and Senju is presumably dead, technically leaving Sanzu as the most successful sibling.
  • Defrosting Ice King: While he was initially cold, quiet and withdrawn, Muto was able to slowly draw him out of his shell with time, patience and... cheesecake. By the time of the story, Sanzu openly views his captain as a Big Brother Mentor. Whether this is part of Sanzu's act or not is left ambiguous.
  • Determinator: Even after suffering multiple hits from Kakucho, getting shoved off a moving train, and having a bike crash into him, Sanzu manages to drag himself back up every single time. Having a broken arm and bleeding heavily doesn't stop him from taking down Taiju and confronting Takemichi about interfering with Mikey's fate.
  • Diagonal Cut: Sanzu kills Muto and Kakucho by slashing them diagonally.
  • The Dragon: He becomes Mikey's second-in-command in Kanto Manji, and later Bonten.
  • Evil Is Hammy: As it turns out, he's very dramatic once he shows his true personality.
  • Exact Words: During a game of shogi, Sanzu tells Muto that the King is the most important piece, which is why he chose an offensive strategy to protect it. A few years later, he reminds Muto of that as he kills him for betraying Mikey, Toman's King.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Come the Tenjiku arc, Sanzu quits the Tokyo Manji Gang to follow Muto to Tenjiku. However, he turns out to be a Fake Defector and kills Muto when the latter is released from prison for betraying Mikey.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: He has a gentle, ethereal-looking face. He's also an unhinged Psycho Supporter.
  • Foreshadowing: Chapter 206 reveals that it was Mikey who introduced Sanzu to Muto, and it seemed that Mikey was already familiar with Sanzu at the time. Sanzu was also familiar with Baji's relationship with Mikey despite not being a founder of Toman. Chapter 240 reveals that he was Childhood Friends with Mikey and Baji.
  • Formerly Friendly Family: As children, Senju and Sanzu seemed to get along well enough. By the time they're teenagers, Sanzu is part of an enemy gang, pointedly ignores his sister in public when he doesn't try to kill her, and told at least one outsider that he's an only child.
  • Getting High on Their Own Supply: A scene in the Bonten timeline shows him consuming some of the very drugs the organization is supposed to sell or peddle, making his already pretty unhinged behavior even worse.
  • Given Name Reveal: His actual last name is "Akashi", as mentioned by Senju, his sister who he wants nothing to do with.
  • I Have No Son!: Siblings in this case. Though Senju blames herself for it, Sanzu implies that his sister didn't play as big a role as she believes.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: He's remarkably skilled and lethal with a katana, sometimes wielding one during fights and to execute Mikey's enemies, not unlike a samurai.
  • Knight Templar: Sanzu only lives for Mikey's sake, repeatedly comparing him to the King piece in a game of shogi and viewing himself as his only true ally, and is more than willing to eliminate anyone standing in his leader's path. His general mindset is like that of a crusader.
  • Lack of Empathy: He displays a callous disregard for people's lives all throughout the story, but it's especially noticeable when he kills several members of both Toman and Kanto Manji by sending a train crashing into the cargo bay in Takemichi's vision. Sanzu's only reaction is to grin proudly at how there's now fewer "annoying" people to deal with.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has long pink (or blond in the anime) hair and is one of the most conventionally handsome characters.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He tells Muto a sob story about being an only child and how he always wanted to have an older brother like him, and does so in order to engrace himself to him. Later, when Muto joins Tenjiku and gives him a choice between staying in Toman or coming with him, Sanzu assures Muto that he'll follow him anywhere he goes, even though he had already decided that he was going to kill him as payback for betraying Mikey.
  • Mask of Sanity: During his time in Toman, Sanzu is a quiet, serious and reliable vice-captain. As he kills Muto, his mask starts to crack and he shows a much more openly violent and psychotic side of himself. In Chapter 207, he looks absolutely ecstatic about Mikey's destructive actions. By the time of the Bonten present, the mask has completely fallen apart, showing just how unhinged Sanzu really is, which is especially noticeable in contrast to his more stoic colleagues.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: In the final arc, after he realizes that Takemichi's Toman isn't getting crushed as easily as Kanto Manji thought, he decides to drive a train straight into the melee in an attempt to kill as many fighters as possible.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: He's delighted to see Mikey lay waste to dozens of Rokuhara men.
  • Not-So-Small Role: Did you think Sanzu was nothing but another Toman Mook? He's actually the brother of one of the Three Deities, was one of Mikey's Childhood Friends, and becomes Mikey's trusted retainer in his new gang which would later turn into the terrifying Bonten.
  • Practically Joker: Ax-Crazy? Check. Disfigurement-induced perpetual smile? Check. Encourages a hero down his path of villainy? Check.
  • Psycho Supporter: As Mikey's second-in-command in Bonten, Sanzu is seen gleefully executing people and promising to do the same to anyone who strays from the organization's path or disrespects Mikey - and his criteria for what constitutes "disrespect" seem to be very loose.
  • Psychotic Smirk: He turns out to be very fond of these.
  • The Quiet One: He talks very little as a teenager, having no spoken lines in the first season. This is eventually subverted when he drops the mask and becomes much more outspoken and hammy.
  • Red Herring: His Wham Line suggest that he is potentially the second time leaper or even knew who the other time traveler was, but Mikey revealed instead that Wakasa told Mikey the second time traveler is Shinichiro, Mikey's dead brother.
  • Scars Are Forever: Sanzu has scars over his face, prominent snake bites on both sides of his mouth. Muto gives him a black mask to cover his face in public. They're later revealed to have been caused by Mikey during a childhood incident where Senju lied and made him take the fall.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: With his younger sister Senju.
  • Symbolism: Sanzu removes his mask as he shows both Muto and the audience his true face. He's never seen with it on again.
  • Undying Loyalty: Sanzu's loyalty lies not within the Tokyo Manji Gang, nor even Muto. The target of his loyalty is Mikey, and he follows him by joining Bonten. When Mikey jumps off a building in the current present, he also visibly loses his cool.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: The final arc reveals that Sanzu used to be a cheerful child, and while he often had to be burdened with his duties of taking care of Senju while Takeomi was away, he still maintained his bright demeanor. But eventually, this took a toll and he started to suffer from Middle Child Syndrome due to his brother treating Senju far more favorably than he did Sanzu himself. Senju lying and making Sanzu the scapegoat for breaking Mikey's plane toy (that Mikey himself had painstakingly built from scratch) was the start of Sanzu changing for the worse.
  • Walking Spoiler: Not only is he a rather unassuming character until the final part of the manga, his slippery, deceiving nature makes him difficult to talk about without spoiling anyone who isn't up to date with the story.
  • Wham Line:
    • Chapter 206: "I've been waiting so long for this day... You traitor!"
    • Chapter 256: "Are you a time leaper too...?"
  • Who Needs Enemies?: Sanzu proudly states that he doesn't care about anyone beside Mikey, not even his own life, which is why he's willing to kill friends and foes alike if the end result serves his leader's goals.
  • Yandere: Beneath a stoic and quiet exterior (at least initially), Sanzu is... creepily obsessive about Mikey. He calls him his "king", devoted his entire life to him and him alone, and would be more than willing to die for his sake. He's also convinced that he's Mikey's only true comrade, and will gladly let his Ax-Crazy personality shine and eliminate anyone he sees as a threat to his leader, including his own family or comrades because "everyone is just a bunch of noise".

  • Abusive Parents: His childhood flashback and the DVD extras reveal that Kazutora's father was violent towards him and his mother, which he justified as "disciplining" them. His mother later divorced him and encouraged Kazutora to side against his father, while also neglecting him once the two of them lived on their own.
  • Animal Motifs: Kazutora is associated with tigers, as the "tora" in his name means "tiger." He also has a tiger tattoo on his neck, cat-like eyes, and his striped hair looks like the animal's fur patterns.
  • Battle Trophy: Kazutora and Junpeke were friends in their childhood, until Kazutora realized through Baji that Junpeke only used him for money. When he beats up Junpeke, he steals his earring (which he had previously admired) and wears it as a trophy.
  • Bludgeoned to Death: In the Valhalla arc, Mikey originally kills Kazutora by beating his face down in a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Chick Magnet: When looking for Takemichi at school a couple of girls notice how handsome he is and become all smitten.
  • Cute and Psycho: Kazutora is very friendly and Affably Evil, giving Takemichi a hug and being chipper around him during their first meeting. However, Kazutora is also mentally unstable due to his childhood.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Kazutora's father abused him and his mother when he was a kid. His mother urged him to pick her side as the "good" side, which eventually led to his black-and-white morality.
  • Delinquent Hair: As a 12 year old, Kazutora has a punch perm.
  • Et Tu, Brute?:
    • Near the end of Bloody Halloween, Kisaki and Hanma convince Kazutora that Baji never cared about him. This causes Kazutora to fatally stab Baji.
    • As a child, Kazutora hung out with Junpeke, but he later learns that Junpeke only used him for money and never cared about him.
  • Forgotten Friend, New Foe: Mikey tells Takemichi that there were five founders of the Tokyo Manji Gang. In reality, there were actually six, with the final member being Kazutora, who had been estranged from the group.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Bloody Halloween, Kazutora decides to turn himself into the police and stays in juvenile detention for 10 years. When he returns, he is accepted back into the Tokyo Manji Gang and works closely with Chifuyu.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Employed this as part of his Never My Fault; he broke into the shop of Shinichiro, Mikey's older brother, to steal a motorcycle for Mikey's birthday, not knowing who owned the shop. Then when he ends up killing Shinichiro when he discovers him and Baji, he concludes that, since he broke into the shop to get the bike for Mikey, it was Mikey who killed Shinichiro, and therefore he needs to kill him to avenge Shinichiro. Granted, it's unlikely that the incident did wonders for his sanity.
  • Killed Offscreen: In the Tenjiku arc, present-day Mikey has him killed.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: In the present timelines, Kazutora has long hair. During his first appearance in the present, Takemichi even mistakes him for Baji.
  • Meaningful Name: "Kazutora" uses the characters for "one" and "tiger" in Japanese, and Kazutora has a tiger tattoo on his neck.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Kazutora has his first breakdown when he kills Shinichiro by accident, after which he decides to blame it on Mikey. The second time is after Baji dies, making Kazutora realize how important Baji was to him.
  • Never My Fault: Blames Mikey for the death of his older brother Shinichiro, since he broke into his motorcycle shop to steal a heavily customised one for Mikey's and killed Shinichiro when he discovered him and Baji, not realizing that he and Mikey were related.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: In the present timeline of the final arc, Kazutora makes an honest living working at Chifuyu's pet shop. Unlike the other Tokyo Manji Gang members, who have pretty much moved on from their life of crime, Kazutora still actively maintains his connections to the underground to look for Mikey. Takemichi decides to work with him, however, there did come to a point where Kazutora had to talk him out of this because Takemichi's wedding was taking place soon and he didn't want the others to blame him for putting him in danger.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In the present timeline during the Black Dragons arc, Kazutora tells Takemichi off for forgetting about the true purpose of the Tokyo Manji Gang, as well as becoming so subservient to Kisaki that even Chifuyu couldn't trust him, leading to his eventual death.
