Number 2

    Shuji Hanma

Shuji Hanma

Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi (Japanese), Zeno Robinson (English), Ángel Pardo (Latin American Spanish)

Portrayed by: Hiroya Shimizu (film), Shuuji Kikuchi (stage play)

Hanma is a member of Valhalla who later joins the Tokyo Manji Gang as the captain of its 6th division after their defeat.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The anime gives him gold eyes instead of purple.
  • Berserk Button: Threatening Kisaki. When Draken attempts to stop him from talking to Mikey after Kisaki got fired from Toman, Hanma immediately attacks him in visible anger.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He may act like a silly Cloudcuckoolander, but he's still a dangerous opponent who gave even Draken trouble in a fight.
  • Big Eater: The databook mentions that he enjoys people treating him, and a manga panel shows him with several empty bowls next to him at a restaurant.
  • Blood Knight: Fighting is quite literally all he lives for.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: For all intents and purposes, Hanma seems like a villain - but he's really more of an adrenaline junkie who will do anything to get his fighting/entertainment fix. Whenever he's not in the middle of something gang-related, he shows himself to be fairly capable of having normal interactions with people. He's probably best defined as an amoral neutral party who will do anything Kisaki tells him to because it benefits him.
  • Brains and Brawn: The Brawn to Kisaki's Brains.
  • Broken Tears: Hanma breaks down after finding Kisaki's mangled body, complete with a Broken Smile.
  • Catchphrase: "How dull"note .
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Weird case of this trope. Hanma is far from stupid, but he's really easygoing when not in a fight, and says some very strange things at times.
Hanma: The world is full of color when I'm with you. It's just like a circus!
Kisaki: What the fuck's that mean? You're creeping me out.
  • Color-Coded Characters: The databook states that his associated color is purple, as best displayed on the cover of volume 23.
  • Cool Mask: He wears a black face mask after joining the Kanto Manji Gang.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 205 is centered around his Villainous Friendship with Kisaki.
  • The Dragon: Serves as this to Kisaki, in both past and present timelines.
  • The Dreaded: Due to his violent tendencies, strength and supernatural endurance, he was nicknamed "The Reaper (or Shinigami in Japanese) of Kabukicho" before meeting Kisaki.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He was deeply upset by Kisaki's death, crying after finding his body and visiting his grave despite being a wanted fugitive.
  • Evil Duo: The brutal, hedonistic Id to Kisaki's ambitious, manipulative Superego.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Courtesy of Takuya Eguchi.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He's first introduced as a civil, if not smug member of Valhalla. His interactions with Toman quickly show that he's batshit crazy.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He gained glasses as an adult, but not a moral code.
  • The Gadfly: Depending on the situation. During a fight or its build-up, Hanma turns into a nasty Troll instead of the fairly playful Gadfly he otherwise shows himself to be in non-violent scenarios. As an adult, he seems to have lost this trait altogether.
  • The Giant: One of the tallest characters, standing at 192 cm (6'4") as a 16-year-old. Takemichi is notably impressed by his height.
  • The Gift: He possesses exceptional kinetic eyesight, allowing him to avoid or block hits from most people, including Mikey.
  • Hates Everyone Equally: The official databook states that he dislikes people (other than himself). It certainly explains his apathetic attitude to witnessing or causing human suffering.
  • The Hedonist: Hanma's main motivation in life is to have fun. His character profile in the official databook also states that his dream is to have 100 slaves to do everything for him, from getting up to going to bed.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: It's strongly implied that Hanma has reasons beyond simple entertainment for assisting Kisaki, but he never elaborates on it beyond promising the latter to tell him when he dies. Chapter 205 shows him keeping his promise, but readers don't get to see beyond the first few lines.
  • The Hyena: Nearly everything is funny to Hanma, and he's even seen smiling or laughing when others try to talk seriously.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: He forces Baji to prove his devotion to Valhalla by beating Chifuyu within an inch of his life.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: How he feels about Kisaki's actions. See his Cloudcuckoolander quote.
  • It Amused Me: For a while, Hanma was not affiliated with any gang. He later decides to follow Kisaki because he finds him "interesting".
  • Lack of Empathy: He seems completely indifferent to the suffering of others. After Kisaki kills Emma, Hanma sarcastically comments that Toman must be having a wake.
  • Lean and Mean: He's noticeably lanky, even getting called a "beanpole" in-universe, and far from a nice person.
  • Made of Iron: Has incredible endurance, being capable of withstanding several blows from Draken before going down. This earns him the In-Series Nickname "Zombie".
  • Oh, Crap!: Has a massive one when an out-of-control Mikey suddenly knocks Sanzu out before turning to him, and again at Mikey dismissing his question of why he's attacking his own allies. He was right to be afraid: he ends up being the next one to take a kick to the face and go flying.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Downplayed. Though no snacks are involved, Hanma watches Kisaki's plans unfold with glee, because it's the most entertained he has been in a long, long time.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Type B. He acts out because he's bored and wants to have fun.
  • Punny Name: Hanma (半間) can also be read as "idiot". Considering his personality...
  • Put on a Bus: He's forced to go on the run after Kisaki's death.
    • The Bus Came Back: He eventually makes his reappearance before the final battle between Kanto Manji and the new Toman, having joined the former.
  • Red Baron: You might want to reconsider before picking a fight with someone nicknamed after a god of death.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The impulsive and excitable Red to Kisaki's cunning and cold Blue.
  • Say It with Hearts: A lot of Hanma's dialogue ends with hearts, showing his enthusiasm.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Wears glasses as a far more composed adult in a few of the present timelines.
  • Tattooed Crook: He has the characters for "sin" and "punishment" tattooed on the back of his left and right hands respectively.
  • Troll: He enjoys messing with people, and he's not always nice about it.
  • Undying Loyalty: Turns out to be truly loyal to Kisaki, as he mourns his death and still visits his grave years later to hold his promise.
  • Villainous Friendship: With Kisaki. Unfortunately, given who Kisaki is, the feeling is more than likely not returned.
  • Wild Card: Hanma is not affiliated with any gang and he is solely loyal to Kisaki, following him to whichever gang he joins. After Kisaki's death, he goes on the run.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He's an accomplice in Hinata's murder in at least one present timeline. He also helps Kisaki kill Emma without batting an eye.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: In the anime.
