The problem: King Koopa Copy is a trope about either Expies of Bowser or characters that are similar to Bowser. The description isn't really clear which, starting with this paragraph:

King Koopa Copy. Try to say that really fast. It seems that the Super Mario Bros.' archnemesis, King Bowser Koopa, serves as the inspiration for many villains in other video games.

There are two main reasons for this: One, simply that the Mario franchise is so well known that most creators know enough about Bowser to base these characters on him. Bowser is one of the first, and certainly one of the most long-running video game villains. It also certainly helps that the game in which he debuted was released in The '80s, when most people who are creators in The New '10s and The New '20s were kids, and likely to play the game and remember its antagonist. Two, he uses many tropes associated with villainy (An Obviously Evil appearance, a fire motif, a menacing growl, etc.) For this reason, Bowser is kind of a go-to inspiration when designing a villain for a video game, or anything else.

But then transitioning to this paragraph (and a following list), talking about characters who are similar to Bowser:

The classic fairy-tale dragon, a gigantic, spiky, fire-breathing reptilian monster that kidnaps and guards princesses in a cave or a castle, is one of the main inspirations for characters like these. The Big Red Devil is another major inspiration, being bulky, horned and ruling over a Fire and Brimstone Hell, occasionally aided by an army of demonic minions. This trope also shares some similarities with the Not Zilla, as the characters that inspired both tropes are large, roaring, monstrous reptiles.

As one of the long-problematic Fountain of Expies subtropes that spawned a Trope Talk thread, and as a trope that had two failed wick check-less TRS attempts (the first by the TLP sponsor), I decided to see for myself if this trope had TRS-level problems. As such, I did a wick check.

Wick check: Link here, but here's the quick results:

  • 8/50 wicks were direct Expies of Bowser, or 16%,
  • 23/50 wicks were just characters who shared similarities with Bowser, or 46%,
  • 1/50 wicks were of other misuse, or 2%,
  • 7/50 wicks were zero-context or unclear, or 14%, and
  • 11/50 wicks were unclassifiable, or 22%

Analysis: So, most of the wicks that were not on indexes or joke pages were just of characters that shared similarities to Bowser. Only 16% were direct Expies—meaning most examples fit definition 2, not definition 1. Some wicks weren't even from video games at all, and were just characters who were sort of like Bowser—though there were still mainly video game entries. Amonimus also noted in the Fountain of Expies Trope Talk thread:

after scrolling I really don't think there are many correct examples, as they can't decide between "Swole cartoonish Video Game Final Boss" and "Acrofatic king Big Bad", neither of which pointpoint to Bowser.

Possible solutions: Alright, I've got three—and I'm not leaning toward any particular one at the moment.

  • If what Amonimus is saying is true, the two ideas they mentioned could (IMO) be their own tropes separately, and we could split between the two/disambiguate the old name. Both ideas could potentially be tropes, and would be more interesting phenomena to document than "Bowser Expies", but I'm not 100% on it.
  • We could also try to rework this trope into specifically an archetype trope about big, threatening, tough, fire-breathing video game villains/boss characters, or essentially a Bowser archetype. While there weren't many direct Expy Bowser examples, the "similarities to Bowser" examples could themselves be a distinct trope, and King Koopa Copy could be redefined/renamed into a new trope about these similarities and how they play into a general archetype of big, bad, tough video game villains. Don't know what we'd call this trope though.
  • If neither idea is workable/both ideas are too flawed to stand on their own, we could of course just disambiguate or cut this trope. While I don't prefer this option, if option 1 doesn't work I'm not sure how best to salvage this trope otherwise—and similar Expy tropes like Darth Vader Clone, Fauxba Fett, Slender Man Stand In, and Darkseid Duplicate have met similar fates, meaning that there's precedent for this option.

What does everyone else think? Any other ideas or suggestions?

Wick Check

Why?: Like other Fountain of Expies subtropes, this trope is suspected of being overly-broad, may have tropeworthiness concerns, and is attracting misuse for only vaguely similar characters to Bowser instead of direct expies.

Wicks checked: 50/50

    open/close all folders

    Direct expies of Bowser (8/50)
  1. Game Grumps: Discussed. While playing Mario Is Missing!, Danny says that there was no reason why the game had to have Mario characters. Arin agrees and comes up with invoked knockoff names for all the characters.
Arin: Yeah, if they put, like, Jimmy Johnson and the Johnsonettes... was kidnapped by, um, Evil, uh, (stuttering) Turtle Monster Dragon...
    Danny: Yeah.
Arin: Then everyone would be just fine. Discussing the "direct Expies" definition.
  2. Characters.Undertale Asgore Dreemurr: Asgore, the king of the Underground, is inspired by Bowser and Ganon, being a goat-beast monster with sharp horns and a sharp trident. He's much nicer than either of those guys, though. Directly inspired by Bowser.
  3. VideoGame.Super Pony All Stars: Lord Tirek always looked the part. Now he gets to play it, becoming the Bowser replacement as the final boss in Super Alicorn Sisters. Seems to be a direct Expy.
  4. VideoGame.Super Mario Bros 2: The Final Boss is not Bowser, but a grumpy, tyrannic toad named Wart. But since the game's precursor (Doki Doki Panic) was also created by the Mario staff and already had elements and aspects shared from its then-future step-parent franchise, Wart (known there as Mamu) was conceived as an Expy of the Koopa King. Both villains are green-colored, enlarged animals capable of shooting projectiles periodically, and are responsible for the wrongdoings seen in their respective kingdoms. Explicit Bowser Expy.
  5. Characters.Fallen Kingdom: Discussed and deconstructed in-universe, with K. Rool being bitter over being thought of as a second-rate Bowser. Cobal inspires him to fight by saying he can be more than that. Legit discussed Bowser Expy.
  6. Webcomic.Original Character Shenanigans: Boozer is the comics resident Bowser Expy. An explicit Bowser Expy.
  7. YMMV.Mario And Luigi Superstar Saga: Bowletta. While Cackletta herself is considered straight-up cool in her initial and final boss forms, her Bowletta form is more polarizing; she's either a unique and bizarre twist of a villain for the Mario series, or a waste of Cackletta's unique design by turning her into a literal King Koopa Copy as well as a desecration of Bowser that makes him into even more of a useless joke. Seems to be a direct Expy.
  8. Recap. The Simpsons S 32 E 4 Treehouse Of Horror XXXI: The Burns that took out 8-Bit Homer bears a major resemblance to Bowser, with his large stature, bushy eyebrows, fire breath, and spiky shell. Seems to be a direct Expy.

Character shares similarities to Bowser, not a direct Expy (23/50)
  1. VideoGame.Disneys Magical Quest: Pete already has some similarities to Bowser, being an imposing antagonist known for kidnapping Minnie Mouse, but these games really play up the similarities between the two by making Pete an Evil Sorcerer, and making him much, much bigger than Mickey. Character shares similarities with Bowser.
  2. Characters.Kingdom Hearts Disney Villains: While Pete already bore many similarities to the Trope Namer despite predating him by several decades, his Kingdom Hearts incarnation can be likened to the depiction of Bowser found in the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi RPG spinoffs (fittingly), as an Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain Big Bad Wannabe who commands a gaggle of minions (the Heartless in this case) and takes a backseat to the more serious and powerful Original Generation threats. Character shares similarities to Bowser, not directly an Expy.
  3. TheScrappy.Sonic The Hedgehog: Sonic Lost World: The Deadly Six are generally disliked as a group for being mostly bland and forgettable villains explicitly written around singular defining traits, unfitting character designs, little explanation for their existence, and pathetically easy boss fights. They only really exist as Sonic's answer to Bowser and his Koopalings in a game geared toward Mario fans. Their leader, Zavok, has gotten particular flak for his overexposure in games following his debut; including having a boss fight in Sonic Forces and being the third member of Team Eggman in Team Sonic Racing despite how inconsistent this is with his previous motivations, particularly how he's canonically established to loathe Eggman. Some fans believe he usurped the role of better-received characters who would have fit the team more naturally — good examples including Infinite or Orbot & Cubot — in Team Sonic Racing. Characters share similarities to Bowser.
  4. Characters.Super Smash Bros Brawl 32 To 39: A heroicnote  example. While Charizard was already one of many Pokémon that fit this mold, in Smash, Charizard's moveset, behavior, and gameplay are roughly similar to Bowser's, as both of them are fire-breathing heavyweight reptiles that also use a lot of clawing and biting attacks. Character shares similarities to Bowser.
  5. Characters.Rocket Knight Adventures:
    • He is a large pig with sharp teeth and claws, and wears a black cape and pants and spiked shoulder pads, while his minions usually have green armor and vehicles. He also hires Axel Gear to kidnap Princess Sherry and retrieve the key to the seal to unseal the Pig Star.
    • He is a large green lizard who has long horns, sharp teeth and claws, uses spells and summons during the battle against him, and his minions wear purple armor, like Axel Gear. He has also hired Axel Gear to capture Princess Sherry's cousin, Princess Cherry, and seek out the seven Keys to the Seal. Characters just share similarities to Bowser.
  6. Characters.Metroid Ridley: Has some traits of this, albeit being Darker and Edgier than the average example. He's a large, reptilian creature who leads the game's primary enemies and fights with his claws and fire breath. Additionally, in Super, he kickstarts the game's plot by kidnapping the baby Metroid and is situated in the game's fiery, volcanic area. Character shares similarities to Bowser.
  7. SonicTheHedgehog.Tropes M To R: The Deadly Six in Sonic Lost World. Their name says it all, but the leader of them, Zavok, is the biggest example as he is a giant horned demon with a predominately red and black color scheme. Implied just similarities to Bowser.
  8. VideoGame.Bonk: Bonk's nemesis King Drool is a massive, green, monstrous, T. Rexpy with wings who kidnaps and brainwashes Princess Za in Bonk's Adventure. He just settles for world domination afterwards, though. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  9. Characters.OKKO Lets Be Heroes Other Villains: Acts as one in "Deep Space Vacation" when the heroes encounter her as a giant in space, much like Bowser in Super Mario Galaxy 2. As for the "kidnapping" portion of the Bowser reference, it's revealed she ate Rad's entire planet. K.O.and Enid try to appease her with space junk that resembles Star Bits. She's a powerful redheaded lizard woman with fire powers, though her role is only Bowser-like in this episode. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  10. Characters.Donkey Kong Kremling Krew: K. Rool is the big green leader of a clan of reptilians that schemes to invade the hero's homeland and abducts his friends to hold them hostage. Over time this has been subverted as Divergent Character Evolution kicked in. These days Bowser is a Benevolent Boss who cares for his troops and can border on Friendly Enemy terms with Mario, while K. Rool got more evil, becoming a Bad Boss who abuses his underlings and wants to destroy Donkey Kong Island and every primate on it. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate helped further their differences from a mechanical standpoint, with Bowser focusing on his innate powers like fire-breathing and his physical bulk to fight, while K. Rool uses his various weapons and gadgets. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  11. Characters.Underhero: He’s big, he breathes fire, has horns, and is fought in a Lethal Lava Land. Part of his boss fight even resembles some of those against Bowser. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  12. DarthWiki.Phoenix Strikers: Asha is a red draconic-looking Horned Humanoid who stands a head above even the tallest protagonist, sports thick limbs and a prominent gut, is fought in a volcanic area, and has an affinity for fire. She also embodies the Friendly Enemy status and pre-emptive strikes of the trope namer. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  13. VideoGame.Ring Fit Adventure: Dragaux, who is a large, buff dragon villain in a Nintendo game. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  14. VideoGame.Croc: Baron Dante is a big green-skinned monster king with a deep voice and magic powers. He even has a mohawk! Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  15. Franchise. The Legend Of Zelda: Ganon started out as one of these. In the first couple of games, he was a beastly Pig Man overlord who kidnapped Princess Zelda and tried to take over the land of Hyrule. However, when his human form, Ganondorf, was introduced, he went through Divergent Character Evolution from Bowser and became more of an intelligent, refined villain. As written, character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  16. Characters.Ghosts N Goblins: A large, brutish demon whose fire breathing is one of his main attacks. In Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection, he shows up looking even more bestial than usual, and his secondary face now resembles a dragon. As written, character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  17. VideoGame.Donkey Kong Country 1: King K. Rool is one of the more prominent examples. He’s a large, bulky crocodile who is the unquestioned leader of the Kremling Krew. As written, character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  18. VideoGame.Marvel Land: King Mole is the fierce and tyrannical villain of the game who kidnaps Princess Wondra. He has sharp teeth, tough claws, and wears a spiked helmet with horns. To further punctuate the similarities between his inspiration. As written, just shares similarities with Bowser, minus a vague mention of "inspiration".
  19. Recap. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic S 4 E 26 Twilights Kingdom Part 2: Tirek becomes this after draining several dozen ponies. Growing bigger, stronger and more brutish with more power. He even captures not one, but three princesses, and holds more several characters captive in a Hostage For Macguffin gambit. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  20. WesternAnimation.Wander Over Yonder: Characteristically, Lord Hater shares a lot of traits with Bowser, more specifically the Bowser of the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games. Like Bowser, Hater is in control of an army of species-specific minions that are loyal to him and has a tendency to use his power for selfish and petty reasons. Both have a miserable record of failures when it comes to evil plans and tend to be subject to a number of Amusing Injuries and embarrassing situations. They both have bizarre relationships with their arch-enemies that vary from animosity to grudging respect and sometimes even share in recreational activities. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  21. VideoGame.Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze: The main villain, Lord Frederik, is a powerful warlord who leads the vikings known as Snowmads. Like K. Rool, he too is pretty tubby, but still able to put up a fight. Interestingly, he's An Ice Person, while Bowser is Playing with Fire. Character just shares similarities to Bowser/K. Rool.
  22. VideoGame. You Only Live Once: Sir Giant Pink Lizard is a massive reptilian villain who dwells in a sinister castle, has faithful minions who serve him and kidnaps the Love Interest of our hero, setting the plot into motion. He's a somewhat tamer example than most, as he lacks fire breath and isn't covered in spikes or horns, but he fits the bill nonetheless. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.
  23. VideoGame.Five Nights At Candys 3: In the Retraux-style platformer minigame "Candy's Adventure", the final boss is the Boss Dog, an enormous red-furred Angry Guard Dog who breathes fireballs, leads an army of smaller red dogs, and wears a spiky collar. Character just shares similarities to Bowser.'

    Other misuse (1/50)
  1. WebVideo. Some More News: Inverted. In "The Movie", Cody points out how President Koopa from the Super Mario Bros. (1993) movie is basically a pastiche of Donald Trump, without making any comparisons to Koopa's more well-known video game incarnation of King Bowser (a Boisterous Bruiser fire-breathing turtle monster rather than a humanoid president/CEO). Not even correctly inverted. Misuse.

    ZCEs and unclear (7/50)
  1. Franchise.Kirby: While King Dedede started off a straightforward Expy, he turns into more of an Anti-Villain later on. In his first game, he steals all the food in Dream Land, forcing Kirby to go to his castle and stop him. This seems to keep going into Kirby's Adventure where breaks the Star Rod from the Fountain of Dreams, preventing anyone in Dream Land from dreaming. But it turns out that he only did that to prevent Nightmare from getting loose. Since then, he's bounced all around the good guy-bad guy spectrum, from helping Kirby save Ripple Star from 02 in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards to leading a full on endeavor to gain vengeance upon him. He seems to have mollified into a "frenemy" as Play Nintendo likes to put it. He may still butt heads with Kirby from time to time, but never to drastic extent and often goes out of his way to quell bigger threats to his kingdom and most of his grievous acts are only committed when he's befallen Demonic Possession. That said, the creators of Super Smash Bros. are well aware of his similarities to Bowser: one of the first events in Brawl pits Mario (and Kirby in multiplayer) against Bowser and Dedede, referring to them as "selfish kings". Says that Dedede is a direct Expy, then meanders on about unrelated things. Putting it in "unclear".
  2. Quotes.Full Circle Revolution: ->Help Screen: "Help Fluffykins cross the Land of Carrots and defeat the Moo King!"
Ending: "Fluffykins the Bunny reigned over the Land of Carrots for many years with an iron fist. His era bringing forth the darkest of its kind yet known."
    Mega Mash No context pothole.
  3. VideoGame.Everhood: Big Bad: Gold Pig, the leader of the Mages who rule Everhood, steals Red's arm and Blue Thief's legs, sparking their quest to get them back. Gold Pig is also responsible for a lot of the suffering of the citizens, and does everything in their power to stop Red from releasing them from being their immortal slaves once Red gets their arm back. Pothole has no context.
  4. Creator.Nitrome: The ending of Mega Mash reveals that after deposing the Moo King, Fluffykins becomes even more of a brutal tyrant than the Moo King was. Pothole has no context.
  5. VideoGame.Conkers Bad Fur Day: Parodied with the Panther King. Despite being a big, menacing tyrant with an army of Wicked Weasels, a horrifying voice, and even a similar facial structure to Bowser, he's an incompetent manchild who doesn't even survive long enough to be the Final Boss. Seems to be a direct parody—not sure though. Unclear.
  6. Recap.Chowder S 2 E 21 Big Ball: One shows up at the end to throw the sports arena into a giant trash can. Little context.
  7. VideoGame.Monster Legends: Koopigg is one of these. Commented-out ZCE.

I'm not convinced there is a distinct archetype here is that isn't covered by a combination of existing tropes like Evil Is Burning Hot, Evil Is Bigger, Spikes of Villainy, King Mook, etc.

I think "Bowser derivatives", while not super common, are a hell of a lot more of a thing than, say, Darkseid Duplicate ever was. Hard no to cutting without a much better argument than "they aren't expies."

Option 2 is probably the best suggestion at the moment.

I also like the sound of 2, of course; creating archetypes out of expy tropes is my preference over just slashing them whenever it's possible. It's just hard to ignore that Bowser is another case of "a mixture of popular pre-existing tropes and concepts" which means any archetype we make will need to be well-crafted so that it stands alone.

big, threatening, tough, fire-breathing video game villains/boss characters

Does this have to be video-game specific though? Also, going by the description alone, this just sounds like a literal dragon.

[up] I was thinking specifically of video game bosses, but I could see it working in other mediums. Also, they needn't necessarily be dragons.

Admittedly I probably didn't think this through enough though. I'm going to abstain from voting until there's more discussion.

Yes for cutting / disambiguating. It's really just a bunch of tropes jumbled up together.

[up]That's the same argument that was used to cut Darth Vader Clone, and while in retrospect I didn't oppose it strongly enough, it didn't make sense even back then. Lots of tropes can be broken down into several individual component tropes; that is still generally not the logic used to determine whether or not they're tropeworthy.

Like, TBH I don't think this is that common a thing. I'm open to persuasion that it's not tropeworthy. But there needs to be a better argument than "it's not about literal expies" (because actual expies meeting the definition are pretty rare period) or arbitrary redefinitions of what constitutes a "trope".

So my question is, what exactly would make option 2 a separate and unique character archetype and not simply the combination of pre-existing tropes and concepts? I'm not inherently against option 2 on paper but IDK how it would be distinct in practice and that's something to discuss.

[up][up][up] That's just Dragons Are Demonic.

Reworking it into an archetype trope would effectively require remaking it from scratch, so I'd rather disambig and leave it for TLP.

King Koopa Copy is a trope about either Expies of Bowser or characters that are similar to Bowser. The description isn't really clear which one applies. What should be done with King Koopa Copy?
