    Chocobo

Chocobo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chocodwii_chocobo.png

A small yellow chocobo who's owned by Cid and helps him out on tomb-raiding adventures. When their unplanned descent into Lostime leaves Cid amnesiac, it's up to Chocobo to save the day.

  • A Dog Named "Dog": He is a chocobo named Chocobo.
  • Jack of All Trades: Chocobo is capable of utilizing many of the different classes of the series, from Knight and Dragoon to White Mage, Black Mage, or Thief. He also takes up fishing as a hobby.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: A rare animal (and probably male) example. It's like he knows his role in the plot is to make everybody happy.
  • Natural Weapon: His weapons are his talons. He can equip all sorts of other talons based on gear he finds in dungeons.
  • Nerves of Steel: He expresses emotions (occasionally; graphical limitations get in the way), but fear is not normally among them. Not even when he's facing off against a giant, levitating phoenix.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Restoring everyone's memories and gaining the blessings of the Guardian Beasts of Fire, Water, and Light unseals the Destroyer, which the people of Lostime fought to seal away.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: As always! Chocobo is a cute, cartoony chocobo with big eyes and loves to make people happy. The player can have him swinging on a swingset or go down a slide in the park for fun, and he looks adorable doing it.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: When the Temple of Dark appears in the sky and Cid has finally managed to build the airship alongside Freja so they can fly to it, Chocobo pushes Cid into the water and jumps into the airship to fly up there himself, determined to defeat the Destroyer on his own.

    Cid

Cid

Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Yuichi Nakamura (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Matthew Mercer (English, Chocobo's Dungeon), Austin Lee Matthews (English, Every Buddy!)

A young inventor and archaeologist who is Chocobo's owner and best friend, he is always going on adventures to ancient areas to find rare artifacts.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Along with Chocobo, he seeks treasures in ancient ruins, which is how he gets pulled into Lostime. He is mainly seeking to find out what happened to his father and grandfather.
  • Long-Lost Relative: The characters themselves never directly learn this, but Stella is Cid's grandmother, which makes Shirma his aunt.
  • Mysterious Parent: Cid's goals throughout the story are to learn the secret of his grandfather Glen, who he learns has some connection to the town of Lostime. He left behind letters and airship blueprints, so Cid becomes determined to build it. It turns out that Lostime really is a town lost in time, and Glen lived here and fell in love with Stella, making her Cid's grandmother.
  • Nice Guy: There isn't a single bad bone in Cid's body, he is unfailingly polite and compassionate to everyone. Though Irma tends to grate on his nerves.
  • Sword and Gun: Uses a sword for his melee attack and then gets out his powerful gun for his special attack.

    Shirma Magnolie

Shirma Magnolie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled_940.png

Voiced by: Aya Hirano (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Sayaka Senbongi (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Karen Strassman (English, Chocobo's Dungeon), Erica Mendez (English, Every Buddy!)

A young white mage who lives outside of the village of Lostime with her aunt, Stella. The two fiercely believe that people have a right to keep their own memories, and Shirma works alongside Chocobo, Cid, and Raffaello to help them save the people of the town.

  • The Medic: She can join Chocobo in dungeons as a white mage with the Cure ability.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Pink-haired and unfailingly kind.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Her sister is Croma, the black mage. While Shirma is kind and helpful to Chocobo, Croma starts off aggressive and antagonistic.
  • White Magic: Shirma is a talented white mage, even if she hated to study as a child. She eventually becomes the Oracle of Light, and forgot that she knew this.

    Raffaello

Raffaello

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rafaello.png
Young Adult Raffaello (from Chocobo GP)

Voiced by: Ai Kawashima (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Yuko Sanpei (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Ted Sroka (English, Chocobo's Dungeon), Brianna Knickerbocker (English, Every Buddy!, child), Khoi Dao (English, Every Buddy!, adult)

A baby who hatches from an egg that fell from the sky. He has the unique and strange ability to enter the memories of the suffering townspeople, and it is following him into these memories that allows Chocobo to begin helping the people restore their memories. Throughout their journey, the baby enters a cocoon and grows first into a young child, a teenage boy, and finally a young adult.

  • Emo Teen: Shortly after coming out of the cocoon as a teenager, he starts exhibiting a morose, introspective personality and talks about a strange feeling inside of him that he doesn't like. Cid and Stella chalk it up to him just growing up and think he's only acting like this trope.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Parts of the "good" Raffaello occasionally show through when the Destroyer takes over.
  • Fluffy Fashion Feathers: He has a feathery scarf-like garment around his neck.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: When he gets older, he sprouts angelic white wings. When the Destroyer takes over, they turn black.
  • Improbable Infant Survival: As a baby, he flies ahead of Chocobo into the dungeons, and he's always unharmed when you find him at the end.
  • Perpetual Molt: When he sprouts wings, every time he moves them there are feathers fluttering.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: He gets it three times, and it is noted by the other characters because of how unusual it is. At the end of the Temple of Fire, Temple of Water, and Temple of Light dungeons, he goes into a cocoon. The first time, he comes out as a child. The second time, he's a teenager. The final time, he is a young adult.
  • The Pollyanna: As a young child, he is a free spirit that is full of energy who loves learning new things about Lostime. Even so, he is noted to love being alone near the water sometimes.
  • Power Floats: As a baby, he can float or fly despite not having wings.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He is the can. The Destroyer lives within him.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: He has no problem talking to Chocobo and other animals, and cites it as another reason why he questions just what he is.
  • Whale Egg: Despite appearing human, he hatched out of an egg that fell from the sky.
  • Winged Humanoid: His appearance as a young adult.

    Irma

Irma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chocodwii_iruma.png

Voiced by: Yuu Kobayashi (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Mai Nakahara (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Hunter Mackenzie Austin (English, Chocobo's Dungeon), Christie Cate (English, Every Buddy!)

A treasure hunter who has clashed with Cid and Chocobo quite often in the past. She loses her memories early on and takes on a new identity as a maid named Soufflé until they are restored.

  • Cuteness Proximity: As Amouri, she has high-pitched Squees of joy when she sees Chocobo. This is a departure from her real identity, in which she views Chocobo and Cid as rivals.
  • Genki Girl: Is definitely not this usually, but as Soufflé/Amouri she is. She is irrepressibly peppy and constantly gushes over how adorable Chocobo is.
  • Identity Amnesia: When she hears the Bell of Oblivion, she becomes a maid in Dardola's Cafe named Amouri.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is abrasive, vain, and mostly interested in making money, but she clearly cares for Volg and is quick to come to the aid of her rivals Cid and Chocobo.
  • Ms. Fanservice: A tall buxom girl that wears skintight clothing. Is also this as Amouri where she wears a French Maid Outfit. Other characters in town comment on her good looks.

    Volg

Volg

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chocodwii_volg.png

Voiced by: Akio Ōtsuka (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Ryota Takeuchi (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Travis Willingham (English, Chocobo's Dungeon), Chris Tergliafera (English, Every Buddy!)

A large black feathered chocobo who is Irma's loyal companion.

  • Friendly Rivalry: In contrast to Cid and Irma who are normally at one another's throats, Chocobo and Volg get along quite well.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: A cold and disciplined warrior who is noticeably more polite and honorable than his master.
  • Rugged Scar: He has a scar on his beak to demonstrate his experience in battle.

    Mog/Dungeon Hero X

Mog/Dungeon Hero X

Voiced By: Kumiko Watanabe (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Maria Naganawa (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Brina Palencia (English, Chocobo's Dungeon), Cristina Valenzuela (English, Every Buddy!/Chocobo GP)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dungeonherox.png

A boisterous Moogle adventurer who considers himself to be Chocobo's rival. He's "secretly" the fabled hero and explorer Dungeon Hero X, as well as his "acquaintance" Merchant Hero X though pretty much everyone knows this.

  • Bad "Bad Acting": His (mostly unsolicited) attempts to deny being any of the Hero Xs is filled with this.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Whenever Mog denies being Dungeon Hero X.
  • Incoming Ham: He loves making dramatic entrances. Though he tends to try them after everyone else has already gathered around him.
Dungeon Hero X: When you need him, he's there.
    Whistling a tuuuune, he's there.
With eyes gently sparkling behind his mysterious mask.
Nobody knows who he is, but everybody knows his name...
(Mog turns around as a large X symbol appears before him)
Da-da-daaaah! Have no fear. Dungeon Hero X is here, kupo!
  • Leitmotif: A remix of Man with the Machine Gun which carries over to his other appearances.
  • Mythology Gag: Hero X serves as a reference to both his namesake Mog, and to Namingway constantly changing jobs and renaming himself to suit his new profession.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: It doesn't help that the various Hero Xs, which are supposed to be different moogles, all wear the same costume with slight variations. It also doesn't help that Mog sometimes messes up which Hero X he's supposed to be at the time with his dramatic entries.
  • Shoplift and Die: Stealing from Merchant Hero X will cause him to change to Dungeon Hero X and attack Chocobo.
  • Unknown Rival: Chocobo is completely unaware of Mog's perceived rivalry with him.

    Freja

Freja

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chocodwii_freya_7.png
Voiced by: Rie Saito (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Yuna Kamakura (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Faye Mata (English, Every Buddy!)
Lostime's blacksmith. The memories she lost are of her other role as the Oracle of Fire.

  • Cool Big Sis: Particularly to Shirma, who she looks out for and worries about whenever Shirma is in trouble.
  • Fisher King: When she forgot her memories, all of Lostime's fire went out- both literally and metaphorically.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Fairly busty and shows a fair amount of skin, she also has a stretching animation that the camera focuses on every so often.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: Mythril, adamant, whatever. She can improve it.

    Meja

Meja

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chocodwii_mea.png
Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Risa Hayamizu (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Erika Harlacher (English, Every Buddy!)

A maid who works at Dardola's Cafe in Lostime. Like Freja, she lost her memories; in particular, her role as the Oracle of Water.

  • Anti-Debuff: When brought along as a Buddy, she has the ability to cure Chocobo of any Status Effects.
  • Cowardly Lion: In her backstory, she would faint or run away when confronted with danger, particularly during Lostime's past encounters with the Destroyer. With Character Development, she grows out of these fears and fights to protect her town.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She is noted to drop a lot of things while she waits tables at the cafe.
  • Improbable Weapon User: She uses a dinner plate or a serving tray to bash her foes.
  • The Ingenue: She has a very demure, sweet personality.

    Croma Magnolie

Croma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chocodwii_croma_8.png
Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Lynn (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Erika Lenhart (English, Chocobo's Dungeon), Lizzie Freeman (English, Every Buddy!)

A mysterious black mage who guards the dark secrets of Lostime.

  • Ascended Extra: The original Croma was mostly a generic character with no notable traits and his biggest role was as a racer in Chocobo Racing. This version of the character is very integral to her game's plot.
  • Black Magician Girl: It's literally in her name. Croma even dressed in a variation of the traditional Final Fantasy Black Mage outfit.
  • Casting a Shadow: She can cast powerful black magic, which includes creating a shadowy clone of herself that itself is capable of casting spells.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Similar to Shirma, her name is a slight mutation of "Kuroma" which literally translates to "Black Mage".
  • Doppelgänger Attack: She is capable of creating a clone of herself to fight in her stead.
  • Facial Markings: She has a sigil tattoo on her cheek.
  • For Doom the Bell Tolls: She is the one who rings the Bell of Oblivion, ensuring that everyone in Lostime has amnesia.
  • Gender Flip: The original series Croma was male.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: Whenever she is struck, both she and her copy tend to cast Warp to get away from Chocobo.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Croma takes the bullet for Shirma, something that the Destroyer counted on happening as it allowed him to absorb her essence. She gets better at the end thanks to Raffaello.
  • Hero Antagonist: She only opposes Chocobo because his actions are unwittingly setting the Destroyer free. She has to keep the townspeople in the dark with their memory loss, since that was required to seal the Destroyer away. Once the threat is abated she becomes much nicer.
  • Leitmotif: Hers is "Mysterious Black Mage," which is a rendition of "Premonition" from Final Fantasy VIII (otherwise known as the Sorceress theme, fittingly).
  • Meteor-Summoning Attack: She is capable of casting Meteor after taking a turn to charge.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Once she realizes Chocobo is capable of defeating her shadow copy, she descends to take care of him herself. She is fond of opening right up with Meteor and consistently stays at a distance to bombard Chocobo and his ally with spells. When she starts losing health, she ditches Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder for their more powerful, area of effect upgrades Firaga, Blizzaga, and Thundaga. She also starts to throw Maxym into the mix, a powerful spell that can be used at such a range that nowhere is safe for Chocobo to avoid it.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Her sister is Shirma. Croma is more abrasive than Shirma, and the black mage to Shirma's white. Also, Croma is the Oracle of Darkness while Shirma is the Oracle of Light.
  • Signature Move: She knows the most powerful black magic spell in the game, Maxym.
  • Summon Magic: She summons an elemental of each element in a battle against Chocobo.

    Stella

Stella

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chocodwii_stella.png
Voiced by: Mami Horikoshi (Japanese, Chocobo's Dungeon), Yu Sugimoto (Japanese, Every Buddy!), Laura Post (English, Every Buddy!)

A woman who lives outside of Lostime with her niece, Shirma. Like Shirma, she believes that people are meant to keep their memories, good and bad, and that allows them to cherish those memories. To that end, she has a farm outside the range of the Bell of Oblivion and takes in Chocobo, Cid, and Raffaello when they come to Lostime.

  • The Lost Lenore: She treasures memories of a certain special someone. He is lost to her now, but he is most of the reason why she doesn't want to forget the past. This person turns out to be Glen, Cid's grandfather.
  • Parental Substitute: To Shirma. It is unclear how long she has been looking after Shirma, but she may as well be the girl's mother.
  • Scary Scarecrows: She has one outside of her house. It's inexplicably sentient, as Chocobo discovers when he is able to go into its memories. It is also The Speechless. To top it all off, the name of its memory dungeon is "Insatiable Hunger."
  • Supernaturally Young Parent: Grandparent, rather. Since Time Stands Still in Lostime, unbeknownst to the inhabitants, she is close to Cid's age despite being his grandmother.
  • Team Mom: From the get-go, she takes to looking after Cid, Chocobo, and Raffaello and worries over everyone's emotional state at one point or another.

    Other townspeople

The myriad of characters who make up the town of Lostime.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Dardola, who owns the cafe, is revealed to have an unrequited love for Stella, and refrains from telling her out of respect for her, since she loved another man.
  • The Atoner: Pastor Roche, who wants to atone for unintentionally creating the Destroyer due to his own fear and the misunderstanding of darkness, which is neither good nor evil.
  • Good Shepherd: Pastor Roche, who can remove curses and cursed items from Chocobo when he is visited in the church. He devoutly believes in the gods and preaches about their light.
  • Head-in-the-Sand Management: Mayor Gale is a firm believer that people can be happier and more carefree without any memories, good or bad, and does not see any problem with this. Though he turns out to have a good reason for this, since if the townspeople all get their memories back then the Destroyer will be unsealed.
  • Retired Badass: Pastor Roche, of all people, was the previous Oracle of Darkness. Mayor Gale was also once the Oracle of Water.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Pastor Roche. As the previous Oracle of Darkness, he had a difficult time controlling his Guardian Beast, Raffaello, and feared its powers. With Glen's help, he split the darkness in two, creating the Destroyer and directly causing all of the problems in the game. Otherwise he just sits in the church and dispels any curses Chocobo may have.
  • Town with a Dark Secret: Everyone in town except for Shirma and Stella have lost their memories (but even they did, too, it turns out). It doesn't take long to find out why.

     (Spoiler character) The Destroyer

The Destroyer

The Guardian Beast of Darkness, Raffaello, one of the four guardians of the town of Memoria. Years ago, when its darkness went out of control, the people of Memoria gave up their memories to seal it away, and that town became Lostime.

  • Big Bad: The main villain of the game.
  • Emotion Eater: He feeds off of the pain and suffering in Lostime — part of the reason that sealing him worked is because it made everyone forget their pain and suffering.
  • One-Winged Angel: True to Final Fantasy form, he gains a more monstrous appearance when he is fully unsealed.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He was sealed in Raffaello, but at the same time he is Raffaello — due to the seal he just lacked memories of it.
  • Slasher Smile: When Raffaello becomes a young adult and he takes over, he sports this along with Creepy Shadowed Undereyes.
