YMMV / Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger

Go To

  • Actor Shipping: Erica Murakami (Hymeno's actress) and Yuzuki Hirakawa (Rita's actress) get alot of this from fans. Nothing helping with how they interacted in during the ViVi magazine photoshoot. Adding to this is the story they shared during the interview: when they went out to eat sushi, the staff at the restaurant put them in the couple's seat.
  • Adorkable:
    • Rita. Stern judge on one side, hilarious anime Otaku on the other. And then there's their antics in the idol audition in #38.
    • Gira also counts. Whenever his "Tyrant King" persona doesn't comes across as badass and intimidating, it makes him look very awkward and too much of a tryhard to be taken seriously, especially when others are able to see through his act.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • With it being revealed in #14 Hymeno was a child when she bore witness to the death of both of her parents in the middle of the "Fury of the Gods" before ascending to the throne of Ishabana shortly afterwards, is Hymeno's selfish lifestyle her way of coping with such a traumatic event that she never had the time to properly process?
    • With the revelations in #41 and #42, all of Rcules actions prior to them is very much up for debate.
      • Why did Rcules suddenly do an Evil Laugh when it seemed like Daigorg killed Yanma? Was it his way of coping with the fact that he was directly responsible for the death of a innocent man or was it because he was one step closer to his goal of getting closer to Dagded?
      • Related directly to above, #43 has Rcules admit to Yanma in a one on one conversation that he ended up Becoming the Mask and being Drunk On Power at that point, bringing up the question on just when did this happen and when was Rcules able snap out of it and get his goals back on track.
    • Given how much of a Graceful Loser he acted as and his intentions being the safety of Tikyū, one can easily get the impression that Reiniol really wasn't going try and sacrifice Devonica to return to life, with the events of Adventure Heaven being a Secret Test of Character for Gira (and by extension the rest of the Kingohgers) to see if he was strong enough to handle the pressure of being king, especially since he knew about Dugded's arrival in two years.
    • How Causus really viewed Gira isn't quite as clear cut as it is presented. While he does encourage Rcules to not see Gira has his brother as a tool, the way he says and acts while expressing this says he's forcing himself to think this way.
  • Awesome Ego:
    • Yanma has an ego, but given that he worked his way up from being a street rat to the king of his own country, proved himself to be the World's Smartest Man, was savvy enough to see right through Rcules' deception like tissue paper, and is genuinely competent, it's hard to say he hasn't earned it.
    • Jeramie is by no means humble, and will prattle on with an air of arrogance any chance he gets. Considering he played everyone for fools for centuries, it's clear that he earns every single bragging right he gets. It also helps that he completely took out both the entire Ohsama Sentai and Dethnaarok himself on his lonesome.
    • Dagded Dujardin, the second Big Bad, is practically arrogance personified, though it's not unwarranted in the slightest considering what he can do.
  • Bizarro Episode: After three straight episodes of expanding upon the backstories and personalities of one of the King-Ohgers that heavily recontextualizes their current day behavior, #38 decides to focus on Rita and their silly Idol Singer shenanigans. While the episode still has some genuine pathos at the end, it comes across as severe Mood Whiplash, especially coming after the intense #37.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal:
    • Masked Shugo being Rcules. Most fans already predicted this with previews alone. That's ignoring the fact that Shugo Mask's outfit (sans titular mask) is just a blue Palette Swap of the one from before. Even the episode's official synopsis foreshadows the twist in-advance.
    • Dagded surviving his seeming death was also telegraphed, mostly due to the ease in which he’s defeated and the fact none of the other villains are really menacing enough to be the True Final Boss.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • After seeing him get away with harassing and openly attacking the Shugoddam orphans as well as turning the citizens on Gira who is using the Evil Hero persona against the actual tyrant Rcules, watching Goroge receive even a trivial amount of comeuppance is very satisfying, and the hilarity of his failed date only sweetens the deal. Then in #20, he eventually sees who Rcules truly is and smashes his sign of him in favor of now supporting Gira makes it more satisfying.
    • It may have taken 18 episodes, but considering what he did and how much he got away with in that time, it was well worth the wait to see Rcules get his ass utterly whupped by his brother. It gets much better in the next episode where is he undergoes a full Humiliation Conga by Yanma and Jeramie. #20 then ends this off with him finally being dethroned by Gira and fully becoming a pariah to the world. However, this would be subverted as it turns out Rcules' long Batman Gambit to take down Dagded.
    • Considering how utterly despicable he's been both past and present, Dagded's seeming demise at the hands of Gira and Rcules is truly well-deserved for what he did to the planet. While he ultimately makes it to the endgame, seeing his smugness vanish just before the final showdown is a worthy consolation prize. His final utter defeat and destruction at the hero's hands in the last episode comes off as incredibly satisfying.
    • Anyone who despises Hilbil for her revolting actions and subsequently becoming a Karma Houdini is bound to find satisfaction once the warranty ran out when she gets killed by Gira and Yanma.
    • The sheer amount of suffering, pain, and death Grodie has done makes the fact he wants to die almost infuriating. Fortunately, rather than the peaceful afterlife he expected, he finds eternal torment from the shades of his victims.
    • Ever since episode 1, Kamejim has always been an unrepentant scumbag; murdering innocent people, manipulating both sides of the Human-Bognaarok conflict for his master Dagded, and just being a thorn in the heroes' side in general. In the Grand Finale he finally gets his long-awaited comeuppance when Desnarak drags him to hell with Kamejim left whimpering like a dog as he faces an eternity of suffering.
  • Complete Monster: Dagded Dujardin is the leader of the Galactinsects and self-proclaimed "King of the Universe". Growing bored of his duty as a Destroyer Deity with the role of balancing the universe, Dagded turned to manipulating the inhabitants of each planet into turning on each other in massive and bloody civil wars so they'd wipe themselves out. Setting his sights on Tikyuu once its first human inhabitants arrived as refugees from another civil war he provoked on Earth, Dagded manipulates the royal lineage of Shugoddam by forcing their kings to do war with the peaceful Bug Naraku lest he destroys the entire planet. Centuries later, after Jeramie ascends to the throne of Bug Naraku and makes peace with the other kingdoms, Dagded orders the genocide of the entire nation, with only Jeramie, Gerojim, and a few Sanagim surviving by hiding away. After hero Gira is revealed to have been created by him, Dagded attempts to brainwash Gira so he can be reduced to a soulless living weapon for his own uses. Uncaring about his minions when they are defeated for good, Dagded only takes action once the Ohsama Sentai have defied him too much, spitefully attempting to give them and their planet a Fate Worse than Death, then freeze Tikyuu solid in its devastated state to add it to his personal collection of similarly ruined worlds.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Any royal/history buff can tell you that lèse majesté laws are a thing; anyone who spoke to a king the way N'Kosopa's citizens did to Yanma in #2 usually ended up in prison or in stocks at best. Yet the episode manages to make it funny and even heartwarming at the end. Of course, the people of N'Kosopa are also themed after Bosozoku delinquents, so trying to attach royal etiquette to them would be like trying to put an oversized bow on God Tombo.
    • Blowing up a poor family's house because it ruins the scenery would normally be a horrible thing for a queen to do. Himeno gleefully doing it in #3 like something out of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, mixed with the shocked reactions of everyone gathered? Hilarious.
    • Gira's fall in #15 would normally be disturbing... were it not for the cartoonish glass breaking sounds along with the noises of a freaking pinball machine!
    • The flashback in #42 where Dagded informs a young Rcules that he is responsible for killing his father and countless others by instigating the "Fury of the Gods" would be genuinely horrifying...if it wasn't undercut by Dagded being Dagded, which includes him dancing like he's Michael Jackson, featuring full on moonwalking and crotch grabbing.
    • Yanma's second theme, "I'm Still Alive" features outright cursewords. It's honestly not that inappropriate, considering this is Yanma.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Rcules is clearly intended as a Hate Sink with any Hidden Depths he seems to have being quickly subverted. That hasn’t stopped people from trying to portray him as a Good All Along character trying to protect his people, even after #20 had him declare that he’d gladly throw them under the metaphorical bus. They ended up being right. However, Rcules does admit to Yanma in #44 that he actually did get Drunk with Power and became the tyrant he pretended to be, and some fans completely overlook that.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Within the main continuity, fans love Moffun the Yeti for all of the meme fuel Rita's plushies of him provide, particularly the large human-sized plush. Fans also adore him for his Creepy Cute behavior, trying to understand how an anime that was supposed to help Hymeno with her grief ended up being rather ominous.
    • Gerojim has gained a following due to his normally-soft personality, hammy attitude during his disguises as various characters, never hurting innocents during his service under Dethnaarok, and loyalty towards Jeramie after the latter rescues him.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • Fans have theorized that Gira is the rightful heir to Shugoddam and that Rcules is an uncle (or some other relative) who usurped the throne, due to Rcules being shown to be not as benign as he appears, and Gira being able to use the OhgerCalibur despite him apparently not being a royal or of royal blood. While the latter could be explained by God Kuwagata itself choosing Gira (as Yanma is also not of royal blood, but rather earned his way to the throne through hard work), fans also noted that Gira's name is the only one in Shugoddam that shares a theme with the royal family. #5 confirms that Gira and Rcules are indeed related, though as the younger brother Gira is actually behind Rcules in the line of succession.note
    • There has been much speculation pertaining to the previous royal family of N'Kosopa before Yanma's reign, what happened to warrant Yanma seizing the throne in the first place, and what became of them thereafter. Some have also theorized that Yanma is a Royal Bastard who was abandoned as a child, thus explaining his growing up in the slums and being able to wield the OhgerCalibur. #35 reveals that the previous king abandoned his nation during the Fury of the Gods.
    • Fans have theorized that Kamejim and Rcules' advisor Boshimar are one and the same, due to the Bognaarok somehow knowing of the Greater Shugod's location just after Boshimar (allegedly) secretly informs Rcules of that fact, as well as noticing that both of them make the exact same hand gesture when scheming. The fact that Boshimar is MIA when the Bognaarok take over Shugoddam in #18 simply feeds fuel to the fire. This is confirmed to be true in #20, as Boshimar had been dead for a long time prior to the start of the series, and Kamejim took his place during that timeframe.
    • #28 reveals that Dagded Dujardin is the one who coerced the previous kings of Shugoddam into continuing the war with the Bognaarok. This has caused fans to wonder if this includes Rcules and if his previous actions have been due to trying to prepare for Dagded. #42 confirms he knew about Dagded's existence before the Fury of the Gods with him meeting the King of the Universe during the apocalypse, which caused him to dedicate his life to ending Dagded's rule over the universe.
    • Within the context of his appearance and his role as a yet-undisclosed familiar face, fans have guessed that Shugo Mask is either Jeramie's father or Rcules. It's the latter.
    • Fans have speculated that the white-haired young man shown in #36's preview is Sebastian, with the makeup used to make him look old removed. They were right.
    • Reiniol states that Devonica comes from a lineage that has aided him in judging the kings of Shugoddamn to see if they are worthy of the throne, leading some to wonder if those who came before them had a similar dynamic to Gira and Devonica or some other kind of relationship.
  • Evil Is Cool: Dethnaarok VIII and Dagded Dujardin are the show's personifications of this trope, given the former's general competence and consistently menacing aura and the latter's sadism and sheer overwhelming power.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • Just whatever happened to young Gira that caused him to forget his brother and end up on the streets?
    • Tikyu is not the first world that Dagded has caused two races to war against each other, with him showing Gira possibly thousands of planets in the aftermath of his manipulations.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Kaguragi has been dubbed "The Big Dybowski", due to his hammy demeanor and his surname sounding similar to "Lebowski".
    • "Japanese Blonde Belle" for Hymeno, due to her dress resembling the aforementioned Disney Princess's iconic ballgown.
    • "Hat Guy" for Goroge, due to his distinctive outfit.
    • "Spider-Char" for Jeramie, due to the fact he takes the Char Clone archetype more literally than Rcules, right from his spider mask, which also doubles as his weapon.
    • "Spider-MILF" or "Spiderussy" for Jeramie's mother Nephila, due to her full-body reveal in #30, with fans even declaring that they now understand why the Sixth Hero did what he did. Her being voiced by Kikuko Inoue only compounded matters.
    • Many fans have taken to calling Gira "Bug Jesus" once his origins in #43 were revealed.
    • "ASMR-kun" for Gerojim, due to his very soft tone of voice.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: Many have taken to shipping Kaguragi and Rcules due to the sheer amount of tension their interactions spawn despite the implications that Kaguragi was forced to suck up to Rcules because of Suzume's captivity. Rcules has even stated in #18 that he tends to be loose-lipped around Kaguragi, which only further fueled the shipping.
  • Genius Bonus: Hachi Ohger's Ohger Finish involves a swarm of energy bees enveloping his OhgerCalibur's blade and setting it ablaze. Some species of honeybee are known to kill invaders to their hives by enveloping them and slowly cooking them to death with their body heat.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Prior to the official romanisation (Shugodom), the fan-originated spelling of "Shugoddam" accidentally hinted that its true nature is actually an oppressive kingdom ruled by a Villain with Good Publicity who created a false idol (King-Ohger Zero) while renouncing a Patron God that has been sleeping and would not obey him despite his lineage. In other words, it is a kingdom whose king is damned by its god. Making things even worse is the fact that the royal family of Shugoddamare the only people aware of the existence of the Galacticinsects with Dagded, the creator of the Shugods, forcing them into his servitude with their task being to continue the cycle of violence for Dagded's twisted amusement. Thus making Shugoddam damned by its god since its founding.
    • Jeramie's violent reaction to Yanma's misuse of the Venomix Shooter becomes much worse in context after #31, which revealed that his mother, who used it as her main weapon, died before his eyes after her final battle. Likewise, his reaction to Daigorg's revival hits much deeper when it's revealed that the Bognarok general tried to murder him in the past, and his mother lost her life by slaying him.
    • The Thunderclapper shocking people who lie in front of it in #12? Hilarious. Shiokara using the thing to attempt suicide in #35? Not so funny, absolutely terrifying, and downright heartwrenching.
    • The scene where Sebastian almost casually reveals to Yamma that he's actually a 25 year old under heavy old man makeup is a genuinely funny moment that showcases how much of a erratic queen Hymeno can be when it cames to her standards of beauty. #36 reveals the true reason she did this: Sebastian saw his beauty as a curse to the point that he actually tried to cut himself before deciding that killing himself would be better than allowing his beauty to hurt others. Hymeno convincing him to wear the old man the entire time was her helping him through his suicidal behavior and to prevent him from trying something like that again.
    • #37 completely shines a more tragic and somber light upon Kaguragi's Playing Both Sides behavior. As it turns out, the previous ruler of Toufu, Iroki, wasn't a tyrant that he had to overthrow, but was pulling an Zero-Approval Gambit in order to protect her country's reputation and people. When she asked Kaguragi to strike her down, he wasn't able to go through with it due to being too honest at the time, forcing him to witness her kill herself in order to maintain the lie, traumatizing Kaguragi to this very day. This experience led to Kaguragi becoming a the duplicitous and two-faced man he is today in order to make up for the moment when he "betrayed" her.
    • #40 puts Gira's entire "Evil King" act in a much darker light with the reveal that he is an Artificial Human created by Dagded and that Shugoddam has unknowingly been in service to Dagded for years.
    • Gira cheerfully talking about Rainbow Jururira is harder to stomach with #43 revealing that it was made to turn Gira into a mindless weapon to sic on Dagded.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Rcules previously spared Gira in #8 despite being a tyrant. #42 comes around and we see Rcules saving Gira from Dadged before valiantly declaring that they are going to save the universe ''together.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Due to the OhgerCalibur being voiced by Kishow Taniyama (Kittan from Gurren Lagann), some fans predicted that the Kumonoslayer would be voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi (Kamina). Fast-forward to August 2023, and it was announced that Konishi would be voicing Kamen Rider Gotchard's Transformation Trinket.
    • When Power Rangers Beast Morphers brought back the Dino Charge Rangers, only 4 out of the main six rangers were able to appear unmorphed, with pink and green only appearing in-suit. This is the same story with the Kyoryugers here, only with Red and Gold as the ones getting the short end of the stick.
    • Aoto Watanabe admitted during the series' press conference that he had a major crush on Jasmine/Deka Yellow when he was a kid, even outright calling her his "first love". Fast-forward to a year later and it was announced that there's going to be a TTFC-exclusive crossover special that revolves around Yanma getting a massive crush on Jasmine.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Gira and Yanma have a few moments together that have truckloads of tension between the two. A notable example comes in #2, where Gira and Yanma get into an argument while their faces get very close to each other. Twitter has lovingly titled this scene "heated drama between men" precisely because of this.
    • Gira and Jeramie's very close relationship after the timeskip has overwhelmingly drawn this reaction as well. Fans especially point to the scene in the Body Swap episode implying that Jeramie was sleeping over at Gira's palace.
    • Rita, on the other hand, has strong potential suitors in the form of both Morphonia and Hymeno, with their hugs with each one in #25 and #30 respectively adding a lot of fuel to the fire. Then there's Rita's various declarations to Morphonia about how they'll always be together forever. Himeno and Rita in particular was acknowledged in real life by this interview.
  • I Am Not Shazam: “King-Ohger” is merely the name of the mecha; the Rangers themselves are referred to in-show and promotional material as “kings/monarchs”, with the alliance dubbing themselves the “Ohsama Sentai” in episode 10. However, by the self-titled episode 19, the alliance has officially taken on the name of King-Ohger as the team name as well.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Many viewers correctly called Gira being royalty, since the OhgerCalibur can only be used by those with royal status.
    • Quite a number of fans correctly deduced that Rcules was Ohkuwagata Ohger.
    • With how uninspired Ohkuwagata Ohger's design is, some fans theorized that he wasn't really the Sixth Ranger. Sure enough, later catalogs revealed Spider Kumonos to be the real sixth ranger.
    • Quite a large number of fans saw Caucasus Kabuto Castle and immediately went "That's totally a Shugod too." Well, come the Q3 catalog leak, and it indeed is! It acts as a base, can transform into a giant Caucasus beetle, and has a humanoid form too. Oh, and it can act as the primary body in a twenty-piece combination that involves every Shugod thus far.
    • Many viewers with keen eyes noticed similarities between Kamejim and Boshimar, suggesting they are one and the same. #20 would prove them to be correct, with Boshimar being revealed to have been dead long before the start of the series and Kamejim having impersonated him for the Bognaarok's own ends.
    • Early on in the season some viewers, skeptical about the show keeping up the unique premise, wondered if the kings might end up being transported to Earth at some point. It didn't end up being for budgetary reasons, but during the second half they are indeed warped there courtesy of a spiteful Dagded, who wanted to send them to the worst place he could think of.
    • Everyone pretty much guessed that Shugo Mask was really Rcules.
    • Once again everyone pretty much guessed correctly that Romane Dearborn, the mysterious Bishōnen in #36, was Sebastian under his makeup.
    • Fans successfully predicted that "rainbow juririra" was actually God Kuwagata's Shugod Soul, crushed up and turned into food for Gira to eat. Though everyone assumed it was the source of his ability to communicate with the Shugods, and not done as part of turning him into a weapon against Dagded. The actual source of said powers (that he’s the son of Dagded) was predicted by none
  • Improved Second Attempt:
    • One of the biggest criticisms people had with Donbrothers was how underutilized Don Murasame was despite being a warrior like the main heroes. With Rcules/Ohkuwagata Ohger, he has much more prominence in the story as a character.
    • As noted in Mashin Sentai Kiramager's YMMV page, many fans believed that the reveal that Galza was Good All Along and was only evil because brainwashed by Emperor Yodon wasn't foreshadowed at all, and came far too close to the end of the series. Something similar is done with Rcules, but the difference is that more time is given explaining Rcules' plan and how all of his cruel moments were part of it. In addition, while Galza was killed off not long after the revelation that he was brainwashed, Rcules was able to survive and answer for his crimes, officially joining the heroes eight episodes before the end of the series.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: #11 ends with the apparent end of the Big Bad, which the preview pics assured us wouldn’t stick for any length at all.
  • Love to Hate:
    • Masato Yano does a really, really good job in bringing to life Rcules and his contemptible nature for viewers to witness and detest nearly every week.
    • As detestable as the Galactinsects are, the vast majority of them have so many comical quirks that not laughing at their antics is outright impossible.
  • Magnificent Bastard:
    • Rcules Husty is the initial ruler of Shugoddam who upon witnessing his father Corsus' death at the hands of Dagded Dujardin, began to plot a 17 year-long plan to defeat the Galactinsect King and free the Universe of his tyranny. Pretending to become a tyrant when the Bug Naraku attack, Rcules subtly encourages Gira to rebel against him and awaken the power needed to form the Ohsama Sentai. After Gira defeats him, Rcules goes into hiding and resurfaces once the Galactinsects arrive on Tikyuu, helping them conquer the planet before setting up Goma Rosalia to die so he can take his place as a Jester then use his influence to gain Dagded's trust and a part of his immortal-killing power to share it with the Ohsama Sentai to use against the Galactinsect King. When Dagded launches his ultimate plan, Rcules leads the citizens of Tikyuu to aid their kings and personally helps dispose of Kamejim. After Dagded's defeat and final death, Rcules surrenders the crown of Shugoddam to Gira and accepts punishment for his crimes.
    • Kaguragi Dybowski/Hachi Ohger is the ruling lord of the Kingdom of Toufu, having ascended to rulership after the tragic death of his mentor Iroki during the Fury of the Gods. Becoming a more duplicitous schemer as a result, Kaguragi willingly collaborates with Rcules Husty behind the scenes during the Bug Naraku invasion while aiding the other King-Ohgers in repelling the attack on the surface on the frontlines. Working with his younger sister Suzume to obtain the OhgerCrownLance from Rcules, he gives it to Gira to allow him to win the duel for Shugoddam's throne before using the information he and Suzume obtained from their subterfuge to save Tikyu. During the Galactinsects threat, Kaguragi secretly collaborates with Rcules once again to secure him a place within the Galactinsects and arrange a situation where Dagded Dujardin grants Rcules the power to kill immortals, allowing the monarchs to have the power to kill their invaders permanently. After being supported by the citizens of Tikyu, who chose to fight with their monarchs, Kaguragi joins the other King-Ohgers in destroying Dagded Dujardin once and for all, bringing true peace to Tikyu for the first time in 2,000 years.
  • Memetic Badass: Moffun is getting this treatment, with fans proclaiming him to be the show's actual Sixth Ranger and even the actual ruler/guardian deity of Tikyū. This is helped by an image from #6 of the life-sized plushie holding the OhgerCalibur. Even funnier, Masato Yano, Rcules' actor himself, expressed adoration for Moffun on Twitter, which led to jokes about Rcules invading Gokkan in order to get his hands on Rita's plushies.
  • Memetic Molester:
    • Moffun's tendency to hug every individual he encounters has also given him a reputation of being creepy among fans.
    • Dagded's overly handsy attitude around a young Rcules shortly after the latter's ascension to the throne, as well as him having created Gira by impregnating the latter's mother through G-Rated Sex has led to this reputation among fans.
  • Memetic Mutation: See here.
  • Moe: Rita in #38 is downright adorable in the various costumes they wear as part of the idol competition, especially the one that they wear to sing their version of "Moffun no Uta".
  • Moral Event Horizon: See here.
  • Most Wonderful Sound:
    • The OhgerCalibur's standby music is suitably grand, using Progressive Instrumentation as its user activates all of the switches. Kishow Taniyama flexing his ever-awesome vocals is just the cherry on top.
"You are the king! You are the! You! Are! THE KI~NG!"
      • And then there's the rock track used as King-Ohger's standby track...
        "King! King! King-Ohger!"
    • The OhgerCalibur ZERO is nothing to sneeze at either, the respective tracks being far more medieval and ominous.
"Lord, of, the! Lord, of, the! Lor~d! O~f! The Shugod!!"
      • As for the mecha standby track? It's nothing short of an orchestra of DOOM.
        "ZERO! ZERO! King-Ohger... ZERO!"
    • For Spider Kumonos, we have the Kumonoslayer's death metal standby alongside Chogakusei's guttural vocals. The Venomix Shooter also has this distinction, especially when God Tarantula's key is used.
      "Spider Kumonos!"
      • And...
        "Knight! Knight! Tarantula Knight!"
    • The OhgerCrown features a rock fanfare worthy of any coronation, with the mecha tracks being just as fun as the others.
(press red jewel) "King! King! King...!" (place OhgerCrown on head) "You ar~e! I a~m! We are the! We are the King! King-Ohger~! King Kuwagata Ohger!"
      • For Extreme King-Ohger, the OhgerCalibur's is reused... up until the end, which sounds like something out of a live concert.
        "King! King! Extreme (Extreme)...! King-Ohger!"
      • King Caucasus Kabuto gets a medieval orchestra that sounds like something out of a war drama.
        "King Caucasus Kabuto!"
      • God King-Ohger gets a techno-track that lists all of its components' names in a fashion all to similar to Grand Zi-O.
"Kuwagata Tonbo Kamakiri Papillon Hachi Tento Kumo Ant! Rolling Snail Pede Cicada Kabuto Scorpion! Hopper! Tarantula! Hercules Caucasus Kabuto!" (transformation finishes) "God God God God! God King-... Ohger!"
    • The King Gaburicalibur might feature Kishow Taniyama like the OhgerCalibur, but what really makes it special is Kyoryuger's original Large Ham Shigeru Chiba returning to the mic.
  • Narm:
    • The series features an almost excessive number of fart jokes played totally seriously, in one case as a Death Trap. To some, it comes off less as a compelling plot point, and more of a desperate attempt to appeal to the kids.
    • The mecha itself is awesome, more so thanks to having an actual motion-capture rig in the cockpit. Unfortunately, the setup with the rangers hooked in heavily resembles a reverse-marionette.
    • The official spelling of Hymeno's name is meant to be an allusion to the orchid mantis's scientific name, but for English-speaking viewers it more often than not brings to mind a... certain part of the female anatomy.
    • The scenes where Gira is seen wearing the OhgerCrown are this, mostly because the crown is far too small to properly fit on his head.
    • The tragedy behind Dethnaarok's death turns into this, given how he was killed with a beam of light from the sky not unlike a magnifying glass on literal bugs.
    • The design of Grodie's arms in monster form makes him look like he's doing the "V"-sign in his production still.
    • The superimposition of Gira's face on to Extreme King-Ohger's in #40 makes what's otherwise a rousing end to the episode into a somewhat silly one.
  • Narm Charm:
    • The scene between Rita and Morphonia is #10. On the outside looking in, it is quite silly seeing the latter use a stuffed mascot toy to communicate with Rita, but with context, it's a completely heartwarming scene where a retainer is leveling with her ward in order to aid them in growing out of their shell and ask for help.
    • King Kyoryuzin in its debut alone samba dances for most of its screen time, complete with Kyoryuger's standby tracks, which doesn't exactly match the neutral/stoic expression on the mecha's face. However, this just results in the Kyoryuger charm returning after ten years (or five, considering the 2018 special episode), melding perfectly with the setting despite King-Ohger's Darker and Edgier tone.
    • Ultimate King-Ohger is just a extensively enlarged God King-Ohger. Sure, it seemed comical in Yanma's concept, but it's another story entirely when it goes face-to-face with Dagded.
  • Periphery Demographic: Much like its predecessor, King-Ohger has gained a substantial fanbase amongst young adults and adults due to its tight storyline, mature themes and content, and well-rounded characters.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: #41 has the monarchs forced to sit on bombs less they set them off by getting off the dang things. This is not the first time that people have had unpleasant encounters with explosives in or on seats.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • Dagded Dujardin's debut in #28, where he singlehandedly manages to cause a Genre Shift into a borderline Cosmic Horror Story.
    • #35 sees N'Kosopa falling into a near-desolate state akin to where it was prior to Yanma's rule, as Yanma decided to destroy the main server in exchange for Shiokara's life.
    • #42 has arguably the biggest twist in the show: everything that Rcules has done since #1 has been apart of a seventeen year long Long Game to obtain the power to kill Dagded.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • Surprisingly, it doesn't have anything to do with the CGI, but in #26 after Dethnaarok gets impaled by Kamejim's staff it's obvious from side shots that the staff is positioned on Dethnaarok's side, not through him. This makes Jeramie's attempts at pulling it out look a bit sillier as well.
    • Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for God King-Ohger. While the physical costume is very accurate to the toy, the CGI model for the combination egregiously miscolors a good portion of the design. The upper legs and lower torso are the most obvious examples, being almost entirely solid red instead of black. It's a small price to pay for the quality of the action scenes, however, as not only is the suit incredibly cumbersome to move in, but the extra bulk means that what little movement can be achieved is very slow and minimal, which is not ideal for dynamic action shots.
    • It's very obvious in King Kyoryuzin's debut that the live-action shots were simply done with the King-Ohger suit but filmed from the knees down, as it's very obviously the black leg connectors of God Kuwagata instead of Gabutyra's red ones.
  • Spiritual Successor: To both Juukou B-Fighter and Kamen Rider Kabuto, two of the earlier tokusatsu show themed around arthropods.
  • Stock Footage Failure:
    • The Kyoryuger crossover episodes consistently used older assets during production, particularly in #33, reusing not only the same mecha renders but also the footage of Kyoryuzin's transformation (and minor shots of Gabutyra), resulting in Gabutyra constantly being depicted with its original Zyudenchi instead of the God Kuwagata one. The reuse of renders also means that there are very clear differences between the original Kyoryuzin toy and the new 2023 redesign that become much more glaringly obvious when the Gabutyra render based on the new version is used in #34 to form King Kyoryuzin.
  • They Really Can Act:
    • Taisei Sakai gives one hell of a first impression when Gira tears Rcules a new one in the first episode, portraying the entire moral dilemma Gira faces with just his facial expressions, making his character's Badass Boast all the more powerful.
    • Everybody in the main cast gets to shine during the body-swap episode, giving very convincing, if not highly exaggerated, performances of each other without having to resort to the Voices Are Mental trope. Taisei Sakai and Masashi Ikeda's (Jeramie) imitations of each other are arguably some of the most impressive of the bunch, as they manage to match each other's voices, cadences, and body language to an eerie degree.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
  • Tough Act to Follow: A big one, given that Donbrothers was not only subject to immense fan and critical acclaim but it was also the first major success for Super Sentai as a franchise after a several-year-long decline. Fortunately, King-Ohger was quickly able to establish its own identity and fanbase, and its high production values ended up setting a new standard in modern Super Sentai series.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Fans were left completely flabbergasted when magazine scans revealed a veteran Sentai warrior would appear later on in the series. And not just any Sentai warrior, but the red ranger from 10 years prior. Yes, that's right. Kyoryu Red.
      • And further catching fans off-guard is the King-Ohger toyline releasing an updated release of Kyoryuzin, the main Humongous Mecha of the past series.
      • The real kicker? It's not the original Kyoryu Red, but a Canon Foreigner.
      • The promos for #32 dropped a complete bombshell in revealing that the entire Kyoryuger team (sans Daigo and Utsusemimaru), plus Candelilla and Luckyuro, would feature in the series, complete with Ayuri Konno reprising her role as Amy despite retiring from showbusiness 5 years prior.
    • Absolutely nobody expected Jeramie's mother, of all characters, to make an appearance in the second arc.
    • Fans were once again flummoxed when Bandai announced a new black-colored version of the updated DX Kyoryuzin toy, the color scheme being a carbon copy of the last toy-exclusive black mecha recolor before Donbrothers brought the trend back into mainstream. That being, said though, this was mostly done so that buyers could make King Kyoryuzin using the King-Ohger ZERO Shugods, with an appropriately matching color scheme.
    • While fans completely expected a Donbrothers crossover film, the fact that Toei bothered to make a Kyoryuger one as well took everyone by surprise, especially considering that the Kyoryugers already had two of those films with their names on it and the fact that the team already did a crossover with King-Ohger in-series.
    • Dethnarok VIII returning for the final showdown in #48 took everyone by surprise. This continues in #49, where every notable deceased monarch or notable figure (Iroki, Kaaras, Diid and Metally, Boshimar, Nephila, and Reinoil) returns to the land of the living to fend of Dadged's forces with the help of Devonica.
    • Throwing one last curveball towards the end of the series, Bandai announced in late February 2024 that new full action editions of Tobaspino and the remaining arm Zyudenryu would be released for the tenth anniversary.
  • Unfortunate Character Design: The way Funjim's design is laid out means that he has a head and ass on both ends.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: It can be hard to sympathize with the plight of the citizens of the five kingdoms, especially Shugoddam, with how often they change their allegiances for the sake of the plot. At times, they come across as Ungrateful Bastards who will trust anyone, even the Galactinsects.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion:
    • Papillon Ohger's color and animal motif strongly hint at a feminine nature but has a title that is typically borne by a male monarch in Japanese. This, and the neutral poses in promotional material, meant that it was difficult to confirm whether the character was a man or a woman. Even after the King-Ohgers' true identities and actors were revealed, the waters continued to be muddied by the official website listing the character's gender as "a complete mystery" and "of no consequence", with the "Detail of Super Sentai" feature in Uchūsen vol. 180 referring to Papillon Ohger as a "gender-neutral hero", while the official preview for #5 refers to Rita as "she" (彼女, kanojo). Due to the show itself using ambiguous or gender-neutral terms to refer to Rita (outside of a single usage of 彼女 in #38 by Minongan), fans tend to go either way when referring to Rita.
    • When Shiokara was revealed, quite a lot of fans initially mistook him for a woman due to his looks and hairstyle. His rather high voice also did not help.
  • Viewer Name Confusion: Upon hearing Rcules' first name being uttered, many Western fans assumed that it would be spelled "Racles" or "Racules". The reveal of how his name was officially spelled left them scratching their heads, since how one would normally pronounce it in Englishnote  did not match up at all with what they'd been hearing on-screen.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome:
    • The sets are notably much more detailed and differentiated this year, matching with the series' fantastical setting. Episode 1's production notes state that this is the first time that Japan is using wide LED walls, similar to how The Mandalorian uses them.
    • The CGI has taken a big step up this year, looking smoother and more precise than prior Sentai series. While it's not close to the level of Western blockbusters due to budget constraints, it is still a notable improvement.
    • The series returns to the practical-effects suit battles with the mecha fights, and the production staff pulled no punches with King-Ohger making moves that look straight out of Ryusoulger. Props and physical sets also make their grand return, with particular notes going to the stones sliding under King-Ohger's feet as well as God Kuwagata flying through a stone wall. And admit it, never has the main sentai mech wielding a sword two-handed looked so badass.
    • Although a good portion of the mecha battles is still rendered in CGI, the transitions have reached the point that the sequences in their entirety are almost seamless. While King-Ohger itself and King-Ohger ZERO are very stalwart examples, the one that shines the most in this style is Tarantula Knight, which takes full advantage of its medium whenever possible. It's equal in this category is King Caucasus Kabuto, with the animators well and truly bringing the mechanical giant to life.
    • #27 is simply gorgeous, especially within Toei's budgetary restrictions. The scenes where Dagded shows off some of the planets he wiped out to Gira and Dadged's room are just some of the highlights of a visually stunning episode that utilizes the CGI set-pieces to their fullest.
    • #33 has King-Ohger fight side-by-side with Kyoryuzin, though a significant amount of the battle is CG. This does not stop the two of them from looking badass, however, and it's clear that despite a few glitches Toei's effects department has really stepped up their game in the 10 years since Kyoryuger's finale.
    • #34 animates both Baejim and King Kyoryuzin very convincingly, and not only is the clipping very minimal on the mecha render, but it looks convincingly realistic and fluid, at least more so than past series.
    • The depiction of Hākabāka, the land of the dead, in The Movie is downright breathtaking. From the trippy scenery, to Reiniol Husty's Transformation Sequence, the effects done by the production crew are some of the best in the entire franchise.
    • The final showdown with Dagded has the team create a visual spectacle that seems straight out of Avengers, Game of Thrones, or even a war drama, utilizing all of the techniques used throughout the series to perfect the visuals to near-cinematic quality. The pinnacle of all of this? Dagded vs. Ultimate King-Ohger with the latter disintegrating in a blaze of glory.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: Some fans apparently thought Shugoddam, with the clear divide in how the poor and the rich are treated in the kingdom, was a commentary on many real-world governments, even though King-Ohger takes place in a feudal, medieval-esque setting where such divides were common and inherent in the feudal system.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: While the series does have its fair share of comedic and heartfelt moments to balance out, its overall tone and themes can rival many of its sister franchise's series. For starters, death and destruction are near-casual constants, morally grey characters are present on both sides, and complicated politics and race-relations are abound. That's not even getting into the Cerebus Syndrome the show undergoes when the Galactinsects show up, ramming the series straight into Lovecraft Lite. The more mature themes and content is due to head scriptwriter Minato Takano's intentions for the series, which was to "make a series was interesting for children" rather than make a "childish" show.
  • The Woobie: All of the main rangers have had their sad moments throughout the series, but poor Jeramie in particular seems to be the default punching bag after his introduction. Not only were his parents exiled from their kingdoms and eventually perished, but he was forced into unsavory acts to even be able to achieve his desire for peace. Then, not only did he end up screwing himself over, but by the second arc, all of his efforts have been rendered All for Nothing. This guy is going to need one heck of a therapist after all that.
  • Woobie Family: The Husty family line. Ever since they had landed in Tikyū, they were forced to serve every whim and bidding of Dugded or else everything they know would be destroyed in a second's notice, and for over 2,000 years, each ruler of Shugoddam had to commit heinous actions of all sorts, including genocide and seemingly endless war against another species, no matter how much they may feel in order to protect their people and the future of their planet.
  • Woolseyism:
    • Over-Time's subs translate Tikyū as "Terra" in English, preserving the connotation of an alternate name for Earth. They also render the transformation phrase “Ohgai Busou” (literally “King's Armour, Equip”) as “Royal Arms”.
    • TV-Nihon’s subs render “Ohgai Busou” as “Royal Raiment”. They also do away with the puns of the pre-transformation announcements (e.g., Qua god) and just put in the name of the insects.
    • Some subs have translated Yanma's insult "slack-jawed tanuki" (sukapon tanuki) as "raccoon brains".
    • Dethnaarok's title has been translated as "Abyss Emperor" or "Lord of Purgatory".
    • Jeramie uses a Japanese wordplay which involves calling himself a man who "slipped up (滑ってる/subetteru) instead of ruling (統べる/suberu) over everything" whenever he believes he made a severe mistake. Over-Time simply translates this by punning on the English word "rule" to say that he has "rued over everything" instead. TV-Nihon likewise changes it to him calling himself “the screwer of everything”.
    • Over-Time (as well as this site) translates the Uchu as “Galactinsects”, preserving the pun on the Japanese words for "space" and "bugs".
    • The “Ryoga Issen” power-up has been rendered in English as “Flashing Fang” or “Fang of Defiance”.
