YMMV tropes for the Kaeloo series

YMMV Tropes with Their Own Pages

  • Abandon Shipping:
    • Most of the Pretty/Mr. Cat shippers (though there were very few to begin with) jumped ship after Episode 105, in favor of Kaeloo/Mr. Cat.
    • Stumpy/Pretty used to be popular until the release of season 3, which revealed the existence of Stumpy's girlfriend Ursula. Once this happened, fans gravitated more towards Stumpy/Ursula and Stumpy/Pretty was all but forgotten.
  • Adorkable:
    • Kaeloo absolutely loves playing with her buddies, is quite naive, she loves flowers and ponies and she has a slightly dorky voice.
    • Mr. Cat loves quantum physics to the point where he will dance and sing about it in front of his friends and he also enjoys making bad puns.
    • Stumpy has a lot of traditionally geeky interests, like comic books, video games and internet, he is extremely ditzy, weird and a bit awkward and his Butt-Monkey status makes him even more endearing to some fans.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Is Kaeloo really as nice as she seems? She isn't outright evil, but she also favoritizes Quack Quack and is completely apathetic to everybody else in some instances, emotionally manipulates Mr. Cat, and makes fun of Mr. Cat and Stumpy for awful reasons like the former's low self-esteem and the latter's ineptitude at basketball. In addition, it's also shown in some instances that she doesn't give a crap about people, animals or flowers if they aren't "cute".
    • Mr. Cat sometimes loses games which he could have easily won. Is this the show's way of telling us that even he can be fairly incompetent at times, or is it because, as shown in Episode 90, he thinks Kaeloo will be infuriated if anyone beats her at a game so he loses on purpose to escape her wrath?
    • Does Cramoisie say Violasse is unlucky as a way to bully her, or is she actually scared that Violasse's bad luck will rub off on her?
  • Americans Hate Tingle: The show's English dub, which ran in Australia, didn't do so well (mainly because of late night airings and bad dubbing), and was cancelled after 52 episodes despite the series doing pretty well in French.
  • Angel/Devil Shipping: Kaeloo/Mr. Cat is the most popular ship in the fandom. It is actually canon; the two characters in question just aren't aware that the feeling is mutual.
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The show never really did well in Australia. Most kids weren't allowed to watch it because of its adult jokes and late-night airings, and adults were turned away by the Funny Animal cast.
  • Awesomeness Withdrawal: Fans experience this due to the fact that the hiatus between the seasons can be years long. For example, the time that elapsed between seasons 2 and 3 was nearly five years, from 2012 to 2017, with one special episode released in 2016.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Due to the nature of the show, quite a few characters can be this:
    • Stumpy, as some people find him hilarious and lovable and others find him annoying.
    • Kaeloo herself. Some fans see her as a sweet, caring and adorable Nice Girl and as The Woobie. Other fans perceive her negatively due to her tendency to sometimes be a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, blatant favoritism towards Quack Quack, controlling attitude, manipulation, hypocrisy and occasional mistreatment of Mr. Cat and Stumpy.
    • From seasons 2-4, Pretty was hated by most fans due to her bitchy personality, but surprisingly enough, she did have a few fans who thought she was a cute and funny character that does demonstrate a nicer side from time to time. In season 5, Pretty's personality was entirely rewritten to be a nicer character with nearly no flaws who was constantly onscreen, and the trope became averted because Pretty haters and former Pretty fans alike were enraged by her new personality, accusing her of being too boring and perfect. As of season 5, Pretty is no longer a base-breaking character due to being almost universally hated by the fandom.
    • Cramoisie is either perceived as hilarious, sassy, and lovable, or a terrible person who gets away with too much.
  • Bizarro Episode: Episode 66, which revolved around Quack Quack, Olaf, and a bunch of talking yogurts waging war against each other.
  • Broken Base:
    • Some people don't like the secondary characters Pretty, Eugly and Olaf being added to the cast, and wish it was just the main four, while others think they make good cast additions. Fortunately, both sides get what they want, since they only appear in some episodes and other episodes only feature the main four. This issue was exacerbated with the release of season 5 which dropped eight different secondary characters and upped the amount of screen time given to Pretty.
    • Episodes like Episode 133, Episode 164, and Episode 179. Depending on who you ask, these are heartwarming, sweet episodes where Mr. Cat shows how much he really cares for Kaeloo, or terrible episodes where Stumpy and Quack Quack are out of character for leaving Kaeloo with Mr. Cat as her Only Friend.
  • Crazy Is Cool: All four main characters count from time to time. How else do you describe a frog who is a Cloud Cuckoo Lander with the power to transform into a monster when she gets angry, a giant ditz of a squirrel who actually manages to take over the animation studio that made him, indestructible Ditzy Genius duck and an Ax-Crazy psychopath who can single handledly stop a Zombie Apocalypse?
  • Creator's Pet: Despite her status among the fandom as The Scrappy since her introduction, Pretty has continued to receive more screen time than any other secondary character. During her time as an Alpha Bitch she would often be a Karma Houdini, and after her Heel–Face Turn she became universally adored by the other characters in-universe and good at everything she does, leading the other characters to constantly praise her all the time.
  • Cult Classic: Maybe not so much in its native France, but for a series that's almost unknown in English-speaking countries, Kaeloo's got a surprisingly dedicated - if still small - bunch of English-speaking fans. Its English wiki and TV Tropes page are alarmingly detailed, too.
  • Designated Hero: No matter what Kaeloo is doing, the viewers are apparently supposed to root for her, even though she is portrayed fairly often to be manipulative, controlling, and apathetic to everyone except Quack Quack.
  • Designated Monkey: Stumpy always has random misfortunes target him even if he didn't do anything wrong. If he did do something bad, the punishment is far worse than the crime.
  • Designated Villain:
    • Even if Mr. Cat hasn't done anything bad in an episode (yet), we're still supposed to want him to be defeated and laugh when he gets hurt, emotionally or physically.
    • If Stumpy does something bad to the others, it's usually because he's tired of the way they treat him, but the audience is supposed to see him as a villain.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Stumpy is commonly headcanoned to have ADHD by fans, due to his short attention span and hyperactivity.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: The show has a lot of fans who are quick to say "Aww, poor kitty!" whenever Mr. Cat gets hurt, without considering the fact that in most episodes he did a ton of things which amounted to him deserving what he gets.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Eugly, despite having very few plots dedicated to her and very little roles in the show, is still quite popular among the fans, in part due to her Nice Girl personality.
    • Ursula, Stumpy's girlfriend. She's mentioned in passing in some episodes and has made a total of two physical appearances on the show, yet she is featured prominently in fanfics.
    • Stumpy's sisters Vitamine and Lavanade gained this status after season 5 aired.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: "Let's Play Courtroom Drama", Episode 57, and Episode 58. Most of the fans felt that both of these episodes were exceedingly cruel to Mr. Cat.
  • Evil Is Cool: Mr. Cat may be a sadistic and Ax-Crazy Jerkass and Villain Protagonist, but he owns many cool weapons (like guns, chainsaws and bazookas), he is both incredibly smart and incredibly athletic and does cool things like stopping a Zombie Apocalypse all by himself.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • A lot of fans like to call Kaeloo "Kae".
    • Due to season 5's incarnation of Pretty being widely despised by the fandom and completely different from the version of her in seasons 2-4, fans nicknamed the season 5 version "Shitty" to distinguish her from the old Pretty.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: A lot of fans like to pretend "Let's Play Courtroom Drama" never happened, since Kaeloo was a complete bitch and beat up Mr. Cat the one time he was trying to be nice to her, and showed no signs of caring about him at all.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Like most comic relief cartoon characters, Stumpy is often made fun of by other characters or placed in dangerous or unpleasant situations for the audience's amusement. The Season 3 premiere revealed that he's genuinely hurt by this, because it makes him feel like his friends don't care about him enough to help him out of bad situations or treat him with respect and love.
    • In Let's Play House Mr. Cat is tasked with playing the role of the father in a game of house and plays the role by physically abusing the children for minor infractions (or in some cases, making up a reason to hit them), smoking all the time, neglecting his family in favor of watching sports and going to the bar, and only caring about having sex with his wife. A few episodes later, we learn what kind of family Mr. Cat actually grew up in, which strongly suggests that the actions he played in the father role might have been Mr. Cat's actual views of what a father is like and not just him being a bully as usual.
    • In Episode 35, Kaeloo claims she's leaving and moving somewhere else as a result of Mr. Cat not confessing to something he did. Mr. Cat, not wanting her to leave, confesses, and then Kaeloo reveals that she was lying to get him to confess and then harshly punishes him for what he did. We later learn, in Episode 52, that Mr. Cat has already lost several loved ones, meaning that Kaeloo leaving in Episode 35 would have added to that number, which is probably why he confessed. And then he found out he was being emotionally manipulated and got punished for that.
    • In "Let's Play Scaredy Cat", Mr. Cat makes a Your Mom joke to Kaeloo, which causes her to feel "as mad as mad can be". In a later episode, we see her family, and... her mom isn't there. (And neither is her dad, for that matter.)
    • Also in "Let's Play Scaredy Cat", Mr. Cat's reaction to Kaeloo needlessly screaming and scaring him is to ask her if she's trying to kill him. "Let's Play Justice Masters" has him be been diagnosed with unhealthy amounts of stress by an actual doctor; him dying of a heart attack or something similar at the time was not entirely out of the question.
    • In Episode 130, Mr. Cat tells Kaeloo that as a girl, her job is to cook, which greatly angers her. In the comics, we find out that Kaeloo goes out of her way to wake up early and make him a nutritious breakfast every day.
    • A minor example: in the Circus Episode, Kaeloo keeps trying to force Stumpy to be a clown in the circus, which he refuses despite her constant pushing; a later episode reveals that he has coulrophobia, an intense fear of clowns and starts panicking the moment he sees a clown.
    • Stumpy's Big Eater tendencies and greed become this when you learn that he comes from a poor family with a single mother who works three jobs just to afford living expenses.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Has its own page now.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The show has an ice and snow-themed villain named Olaf.
  • Hollywood Pudgy: Kaeloo is repeatedly made fun of in-universe for being fat, but appears to be roughly the same size as any other character.
  • I Knew It!: After Pretty's debut in season 2, a lot of fans were convinced that the enmity between Pretty and Stumpy was actually Belligerent Sexual Tension. In season 3, it is confirmed that they actually like each other.
  • Iron Woobie: Stumpy. He has constant bad luck for no apparent reason, but he is able to survive being struck by lightning, getting hit by a flying car and being left on an exploding planet which gets hit by a meteor.
  • Jerkass Dissonance: Mr. Cat is a cruel, selfish, rude, and overall evil person, but the fandom adores him for those exact reasons because it's what makes him funny.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: Pretty is not much more than a typical Spoiled Brat Alpha Bitch who is rude, bossy and likes insulting others, sometimes not even that. Most fans absolutely hate her. Mr. Cat is by his own admission sadistic, perverted psychopath who loves using his weapons to torture Quack Quack, his supposed friend who usually never does anything that would warrant it and he is implied to be an actual Serial Killer. Most fans absolutely love him.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Some fans have the tendency to see Mr. Cat as The Woobie while completely ignoring the fact that he treats his friends in some of the most horrible ways possible.
  • Moe:
    • Kaeloo, due to her cuteness, adorkableness and occasional woobieness. Especially in the moments when her idealistic expectations fail, she then subsequently screws up and is left upset by it.
    • Eugly, a shy but very kind bunny girl who gets abused a lot and pretty much works for her slave-driving sister, also gets this treatment.
  • Never Live It Down: In "Let's Play Courtroom Drama", Kaeloo pulls a cruel trick on Mr. Cat by emotionally manipulating him. After that episode, a lot of fanworks show her to be a Manipulative Bitch and feel sorry for Mr. Cat, despite Kaeloo mostly being nice to him in other episodes until he pushes her past Rage Breaking Point.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Has its own page.
  • One True Pairing: Kaeloo/Mr. Cat is, by far, the most popular ship in the fandom. It certainly helps that the later seasons started adding plenty of Ship Tease between them.
  • Pandering to the Base:
    • In the first two seasons, Kaeloo and Mr. Cat's implied attraction to one another was a Running Gag at best. However, the writers noticed that the fandom universally shipped them and were excited by the idea of a romance between Kaeloo and Mr. Cat, so from season 3 onwards they took the relationship more seriously and added plenty of shipping fuel as well as scenes that solidly confirmed their crushes on each other.
    • When season 2 aired, fans often voiced their discontent with episodes where Pretty was actually nice instead of being a complete jerkass, and said they liked seeing episodes with her as the antagonist. The writers apparently found out about this, so in Season 3, they made her an even bigger jerk than she already was.
    • Season 3 also contains other things that the fans said they would enjoy, like Kaeloo/Mr. Cat shipping, Pretty/Stumpy shipping, Ursula finally making an appearance, character development, more episodes with Olaf in them, and Stumpy getting more Throw the Dog a Bone moments.
    • Season 4 has a heavy focus on Kaeloo and Mr. Cat's romantic relationship, which is the most popular ship in the fandom.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: Kaelat (Kaeloo/Mr. Cat). This ship is also known as "Chaka" (Monsieur Chat/Kaeloo).
  • Ron the Death Eater:
    • Pretty is portrayed in fanfiction to be a thousand times bitchier than she actually is on the show.
    • In fanfics which were inspired by episodes like "Let's Play Courtroom Drama", Kaeloo is an evil, selfish manipulator who doesn't care about Mr. Cat, even though in the actual show several episodes show the two of them having a wonderful relationship with each other and caring a lot about each other.
  • The Scrappy: In season 5, Pretty (who was formerly a Hate Sink and a jerkass) was completely rewritten with a nicer personality that was explained in-universe as offscreen character development. After this, the fandom continued to hate her because they found her new personality unfunny, and accused her of being too perfect.
  • Seasonal Rot:
    • When season 3 was released, some fans complained that wasn't as funny as the others due to the sadistic humor being tuned down, some of the antagonists (especially Mr. Cat) being much nicer, and the lack of cynicism in some episodes.
    • Several fans accused season 5 of this, due to secondary characters being pushed to the forefront at the expense of the main four, especially since Pretty (who is relatively unpopular) was given more attention than well-liked characters such as Eugly and Olaf.
  • Self-Fanservice: Just like a lot of other TV shows that feature anthrophomorphic animals, there are some fans who draw the main characters as humans. And not just humans, but attractive and/or cute humans. Mr. Cat gets hit with this trope the most, though with him it's at least a bit justified, because he is supposed to be quite good-looking in universe as well. It gets a bit weirder, however, when you apply this trope to Stumpy, a weird-looking squirrel who is apparently hideous in-universe, as many fans draw him as a cute boy who just happens to have buck teeth and unkempt hair. And as for Kaeloo herself, many fans draw her with explicitly feminine features, even though she looks fairly androgynous in the show proper.
  • Shipping:
    • Almost the entire fandom ships Kaeloo and Mr. Cat.
    • Stumpy/Ursula and Stumpy/Pretty have garnered quite a following.
    • Foe Yay Shipping: Mr. Cat and Bad Kaeloo.
    • Ship Mates: A lot of Kaeloo/Mr. Cat fanfiction will have Pretty/Stumpy in it.
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat:
    • Kaelat shippers , who make up the majority of the fanbase, vs. Mr. Cat/Pretty shippers. This died out after the release of season 3.
    • Stumpy/Ursula vs Stumpy/Pretty was also common when Ursula was first introduced, but then Stumpy/Ursula ended up becoming more popular and Stumpy/Pretty became but a distant memory.
  • Squick: The dishes in the cook-off episode. Stumpy makes stew by stomping his feet in the cooking pot, Pretty serves up live earthworms, and Mr. Cat makes cooked eyes.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Pretty the Alpha Bitch finally gets her comeuppance in Episode 82 when Kaeloo and Mr. Cat work together to get her humiliated on the news.
  • Tear Jerker: See here.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • The addition of Pretty, Eugly and Olaf as secondary characters annoyed some fans who felt that the main four were enough. Both sides of the fandom still get what they want, though, as these three only appear in some of the episodes.
    • In season 5, former Alpha Bitch Pretty is revealed to have undergone an offscreen Heel–Face Turn and befriended the main four. This was received very poorly by the fandom, most of whom found her new personality to be bland and boring. Her rivalry with the main four ceasing to exist also disappointed many fans, as it provided interesting plot points.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Eugly was repeatedly shown to have Hidden Depths to her character, as well as dating Quack-Quack, one of the main characters. An entire episode was also dedicated to her befriending Mr. Cat and Stumpy. Despite this, she continued to receive little screentime during her time on the show, and in the show's fifth season she was Put on a Bus and reduced to cameos.
    • Season 5 introduces us to Stumpy's little sisters, each of whom get one episode entirely dedicated to them. One of them is Ardoise, who is clearly affected by the bad circumstances that life has put her through and is significantly more mature and responsible than her other siblings. However, Ardoise's focus episode ended up focusing on Stumpy and Pretty while Ardoise herself functioned as a plot device rather than being at the forefront of the episode, which was especially poorly received by fans due to Pretty's status as The Scrappy in this season.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: This show can sometimes goes into this due to being a show where everyone gets hurt which is set in a World of Jerkass.
  • Ugly Cute: Eugly is a big fat girl, but because she is mostly nice and because she is still a pink rabbit, just like her sister, she is actually pretty cute. Her boyfriend, Quack Quack, also counts.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Stumpy/Moignon is the most popular character among the fanbase, but In-Universe nobody seems to care about him unless he is in imminent danger… and sometimes not even then. Even though the main four care for him sometimes, other people in the show (who are offscreen due to it being a Minimalist Cast) are shown to hate him.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: It can be easy to confuse Kaeloo for a boy, considering her lack of Tertiary Sexual Characteristics and masculine voice. Even the English dub confused her for a boy in first few episodes. Then again, she isn't exactly a girl either, though she uses she/her pronouns and acts very feminine.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: On the outside, this show looks like an innocent children's cartoon. On the inside, this show is filled with extreme violence, Family Unfriendly Deaths (especially since Death Is a Slap on the Wrist), and some drug and alcohol abuse, on top of Black Comedy and adult jokes that wouldn't be out of place on an [adult swim] cartoon.
  • The Woobie:
    • Kaeloo doesn't want to transform into a giant monster and hurt her beloved friends, but she winds up doing it Once an Episode anyway. It's even been implied several times that she's freaking suicidal.
    • Quack Quack. Throughout the show, Mr. Cat puts him through all sorts of abuse such as getting chopped in half, being tricked into breaking up with his girlfriend, being forced to strip in public, and outright getting Dragged Off to Hell.
    • At times, Stumpy. He is constantly tormented by many of his friends, and is literally a Cosmic Plaything.
    • Poor Eugly. Prone to Tears doesn't even begin to describe her, as she is constantly abused by Pretty (and when Pretty isn't being mean to her someone else will take the liberty to do so), and is a very emotional person.
    • Not only does Violasse have terrible luck, but her sisters don't appear to like her very much either, especially Cramoisie. Violasse is notably the only person that Cramoisie has resorted to actual physical violence with, she refuses to hold Violasse's hand while crossing the street, and when Stumpy is nearly run over by a car, Cramoisie tells everyone that it was probably Violasse's fault for causing it with her bad luck.
  • Woolseyism: In episode 8, Mr. Cat gives Stumpy some sarcastic advice for passing the baccalauréat exam. The English dub changes it to Mr. Cat giving Stumpy advice for the SAT.
