Super Mario Bros. X by Redigit.

  • Recommended by blackmoondin
  • A remarkable level editor used to create levels using elements from the first three games in the Super Mario Bros. series and Super Mario World. The editor and game are highly faithful to the Super Mario games of old, and while the editor itself is no longer being worked on due to a debacle in early February 2011, the fandom has made (and continues to make) many impressive creations with the tools this editor offers, some of which might even surpass Nintendo's own work. If you're an avid Mario or platforming fan (which you most likely are if you're reading this page), this game is certainly worth a try.

    General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.
Super Mario Bros.: The Legend Begins by Tanookris
  • Recommended by Phoenix Fire 69
  • Status: Dormant; last updated February 2021
  • Synopsis: Spurred on by a magic whistle, Mario and his brother Luigi find a hidden Warp Zone to the forgotten Mushroom Kingdom. Soon, the brothers will be thrust into the middle of a decades-old clash that will change their fate and define their legacies as heroes.

Princess Power! by Boo Destroyer
  • Recommended by Shadow Man 2
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A game idea that revolves around Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina coming together in their own adventure. And this time, with the help of E. Gadd, they've got a new kind of power to strike back.
  • Comments: An interesting take on Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina as transforming superheroines in their own adventure, and a very well thought out game idea (Better than Super Princess Peach, at that). Give it a good read through and you'll find yourself wanting it to be an actual game!

Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom (viewable in part 1 here Part 2, Part 3, Part 4'' by Randy Solem
  • Recommended by Nexus, Brendan Rizzo
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Inspired by Mario Brothers, the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom decide to finish off the koopas once and for all after tragedy strikes. This series has more humor in it, as well as ridiculously over-the-top violence.
  • Comments: Be warned that this series contains a lot of bathroom humor.

Super Mario Bros. Z
  • Recommended by Known Unknown, Brendan Rizzo
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: A sprite animation crossover between Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog in a homage to Dragon Ball Z. Sonic and Shadow arrive in Mario's universe in search of Chaos Emeralds, which have been sent there to keep them away from a villain who has already destroyed their home universe. Now everyone wants their hands on the power, and the race is on.
  • Comments: Very well animated, and gets better as the series goes on. The plot ain't too shabby either, mixing a DBZ-style plot with Mario & Luigi / Paper Mario-style shenanigans. The entire series can be found here. Beware of imitations.

Power Star by Daniel Sun
  • Recommended by Nexus
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In this (now complete) series of flash movies, Mario gets possessed by Boos, prompting him to become Brainwashed and Crazy AND Taking A Level In Badass! Only Luigi can stop him before he can acquire all of the Power Stars (from Super Mario 64).
  • Comments: One of the best Mario flash movies ever. Beautifully animated fight scenes along with a very well-thought out story. It must be seen to be believed.

Power Star 4.5 by Jon Bro (Alternate Link)
  • Recommended by Nexus (Yes, I really like flash movies)

Let's Go! Thingio! by Tech Wing
  • Recommended by Edrobot
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Basically a visual Crack Fic, Thingio is a short video game about Mario, Geno, and the leader of the Rub Rabbits trying to save the world in the name of Truth Pasta, Justice Pasta, and the American way Gunpei Yokoi. The gameplay and story itself is So Bad, It's Good on purpose, but the more annoying sections can be skipped thanks to a password system. Sadly, it's a dead fic, "Side B" has been stuck in Development Hell for a few years now, and has probably been abandoned. Oh, yes, and you have to download a couple DLL's off the MFGG site to play, so just go to the MISC menu, and look under "System Files". Trust me, it's worth it.

Super Mario Sunshine: A Sprite of Light by mariobroultimate
  • Recommended by researcher99
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: (From the author) To get away from the wintery Mushroom Kingdom, the Mario Bros, along with Peach, and some new friends go on vacation to the sun-drenched tropical paradise of Isle Delfino. Their peace is shattered when a new group of villains come to wreck havoc on the Isle. So much for a vacation. Can Mario, his friends, and their new water pack FLUDD save the day?
  • Comments: This is more than just a simple adaptation of Super Mario Sunshine. Its plotline is driven and well put together. There’s also a lot more action than you can imagine.
  • Now with it's own page!

Super Mario 63 (game. There only exist two sites that have the full version, this is one of them) (Possible AU)
  • Recommended by Great Pikmin Fan and Luigifan
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: This starts out with the typical "Bowser kidnaps Peach" plot, but it's more deep than that. It turns out that Bowser has this "orb of power" that lets him summon a meteor to destroy the world (this is because the orb of power took over Bowser's mind).
  • Comments: Hands down, no contest, the best Mario fan game. The only game that even comes close is Super Mario Flash.
    • Luigifan here. I used this game's level editor to make my first two "Super Luigi Bros." games (which I have no qualms about plugging), but the real meat of the recommendation is the main game, which is simply incredible. The lack of a wall jump, faulty audio chip, tendency for slowdown really do nothing to dent the high quality of the gameplay and the level design, to say nothing of the awesome plot. The game can also be quite challenging without ever becoming frustrating, which is a nice touch, and the aforementioned Level Editor, while blatantly missing a few crucial features from the main game (at least the last time I used it), is still utterly awesome and simple to use. Easily one of the best flash games on Newgrounds. Oh, and it has its own page.

Three Little Princesses by "The Bourgyman" Yves Bourgelas
  • Recommended by Burstkiller
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Peach and Daisy hear loud noises from the outside of the castle. Upon realizing it is nothing but a bulky, exploding spaccraft that makes such noise, they decide to go sneak a peek. It is only then that they get to meet Rosalina, the watcher of the stars, whose comet observatory crashed on Peach's garden not too long ago after encountering a meteor from a little too close. Rosalina's only way to get back on track isn't available until the day after, so the two princesses decide that the best way they can entertain their guest (as well as themselves) for the night, is to organize a sleepover. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Comments: A very twisted and hilarious take on Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina that will put a smile on your face. The artwork is cute, fun, and energetic with a great range of emotions. Bonus points for the use of "Excuse Me Princess" as a drinking game. Also posted on DeviantArt.

Super Mario Galaxy: Reach For The Stars, Bad Luck and Will There Be No Mercy From The Immortals ?
  • Recommended by killerzuera
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A three-part series that consists of the adventures of the characters as a whole, but mainly focusing on the relationships between Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. The first story consists of the 4 bros teaming up to rescue Rosalina and Princess Peach from Bowser. Bad Luck is focused on Waluigi dealing with...an unlikely event, to say the least. The last fic consists of the gang teaming up to save the world and enact revenge on a new villain
  • Comments: This is possibly one of the best fanfics ever written. The writing is energetic and quick, but detailed enough so that the details are well demonstrated. The characters are extremely well translated into the stories and are very faithful to their original characters. A must-read

Paper Mario: The Temple of the Sun, by that one little guy
  • Recommended by SpiriTsunami, The Otaku Ninja, The Copy Universe
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A brand new Paper Mario game, along the vein of Thousand-Year Door. Mario and Luigi accompany Peach to the land of Chronoside, but when a thieving Goomba steals Mario's hammer, the heroic plumber chases him into the Temple of the Sun. While the two of them are in there, something happens to split Chronoside in two — one world where it's always daytime, and one where it's always night... COMPLETE!
  • Comments: A very ambitious undertaking, as it is essentially creating a new game from scratch. Currently in Chapter 4 (as of 9/10/10). There are only a total of six Sun Souls, not the usual seven, so it will be interesting to see if there are still eight stages.
    • Seconded, the characters are interesting, the settings are nicely described, and the whole thing comes together in a very well-crafted story. Hell, this fic deserves its own page.
      • Will do.
      • The story is complete, and I loved reading every chapter of it!

King of the Koopas by Lemony Shephard
  • Recommended by: The Otaku Ninja
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Prequel to Super Mario 64. We all know Bowser as The Villain, but what is his story? Is he evil at all? SO much happened before Mario popped up, and you'll never look at Toads, Koopas, or Peach the same ever again! COMPLETE!
  • Comments: Mainly inspired by Wicked, this story gives us a different look at the Mario-verse, one that shows that things are not as clear-cut as you think they are.

A Heart of Stone by General Luigi
  • Recommended by: The Otaku Ninja
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: What happened to Bowser that made him the villain so many gamers know and love? This story tells of his life before Peach and anyone else. Please note that every now and then, a chapter will be in the time after Paper Mario 2.
  • Comments: Another take on Bowser's past, this one based off Russian history. Nicely done and well-thought out, it ties together some of the games into its story.

Cassie by Dr. Adrian Crimony (AU)
  • Recommended by Iggy Koopa
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A Shy Guy and a Birdo embark on a journey to enslave all the Yoshi in the world.
  • Comments: A twisted and darkly comedic work. It's particularly admirable in how it takes obscure details from the video game series (particularly Super Mario World) and strings them together.

More Than You Know by Pedestrians
  • Recommended by Happyman
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Princess Peach is kidnapped on the night of the Mushroom Ball. She is devastated until she meets Bowser's children and learns that they are much different than the spoiled brats everyone thinks they are.
  • Comments: The most striking trait of this story is its interesting and unique depiction of the koopalings, in which they're portrayed as something more than "Bowser's minions who also happen to be his children", as well as the awesome characterization of Peach and Bowser.

Waluigi's Adventure by Yoshizilla-Rhedosaurus
  • Recommended by Patrobotnik
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Waluigi basically goes on an adventure to save Princess Daisy from a strange mechanical menace, with the help of Toadette, Petey Piranha, and Gooper Blooper.
  • Comments: An incredibly simple but well-executed adventure fanfic that stars Waluigi and places him in the starring role, with Petey and Gooper coming along for the ride. Also has an intriguing rivalry in a Porygon-Z.

Fibra by Usami
  • Recommended by Blazichu
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After making off with one of E. Gadd's latest inventions, Bowser's acting out his latest plan to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, but this time, he's got an unprecedented ally — Luigi. It's mostly a genfic, but there are some undeniable hints of a Luigi/Daisy romance.
  • Comments: I cannot recommend this fic heartily enough — it's a real treat for fans of 'the man in green'.

Super Smash by Ferguson Winston
  • Recommended by Thecommander 236
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It's time for Mario, Luigi, and Toad to put Bowser in his place. They are greeted by the tyrant king at the entrance of his castle and no one's in the mood for words.
  • Comments: An outlandish animated short, whose preview scored a decent 4.28 on Newgrounds and won an award, that finally hit the scene over a year later and scored a 4.43 and bagged two awards. It displays the plumbers and the little shroom as ganstas, but in a good way. The action is great and (YMMV) the changes are too weird to hate. It humorously depicts Mario as a fat gansta who doesn't wear a shirt and has a cap that covers his eyes, Luigi is a lanky junky who takes fire flowers as joints, and Toad, despite being a foot tall, is actually displayed as a Badass and he borders on Butler status. You'll either love it or hate it, but, surprisingly, a lot of people love it.

Luigi: Two Lights' Hero by Meinos Kaen
  • Recommended by Thecommander 236
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: Luigi and Mario are traveling through the forest one day when Luigi sees a orb of lightning appear that streaks to hit Mario. Mario had been distracted and, without thinking about his own concern, Luigi jumps into the path of the projectile. It transports him to a strange yet familiar world where he meets a dark king and he looks exactly like Luigi! It seems something in this world has gone wrong and he's trapped in the middle of a bloody revolution to overthrow the so-called King Maluigi. In order to get home, he must become stronger, and he has to fight without his brother's help.
  • Comments: The story is a deconstruction of the Overshadowed, Woobie, and The Unfavorite younger brother. It paints an interesting picture of how an overshadowed character would react to the fanbase of the series. Mario came first and Luigi was painted as a coward, so no one in the Mushroom Kingdom respected him or treated him like the hero he was. After all, Mario was the older and the more daring twin. The sci-fi and magical elements add a unique flavor to the series. In this universe, Luigi was so angered by his Aloof Big Brother and the lack of respect he received that he trained to earn it, but then he disappeared and he returned evil. It has an interesting subversion of Cain and Abel and The Evil Prince in that Luigi is the younger brother and that he became an evil king when he started off as a good commoner respectively. Unfortunately, the series has been on a two year+ hiatus.

Luigi's Wonderland by Flannelson
  • Recommended by Gilgameshkun
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Mario and Luigi are in the house the brothers share together. While Luigi is watching television, Mario steps out of the house. Convinced he is alone in the house, Luigi gets out a cassette player and an audio tape. It starts playing "Boogie Wonderland" by Earth, Wind & Fire, and Luigi starts disco dancing very skillfully.
  • Comments: An Adobe Flash-animated video hosted on Newgrounds, with another copy on Youtube. Other than the lyrics of the song, this is a completely No Dialogue Bizarro Episode about the secret dance life of Mario's ever-Ambiguously Gay twin brother. And even more precious than Luigi doing Earth, Wind & Fire, is how it all ends.

After Jim meets his favorite video game characters, Mario and Luigi, Princess Peach sends an invitation to Dinosaur Land, but little do they know she's been kidnapped again.

Mario & Luigi: The Seven Star Spirits by nintendoscript15
  • Recommended by mariobroultimate
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopis: (From the author) After Bowser steals the mythical Star Rod of the Star Road, in addition to kidnapping the seven Star Spirits and Princess Peach, Mario and Luigi set off on their most ambitious and dramatic adventure to date.
  • Comments: As an adaptation to the first of Mario's thinner adventures, this story stays tried and true to the original game, now with Luigi along for the ride! There's now greater risks, more drama, more action, and Bowser is as scary as ever (if not a little more). Some partners and story elements have either been adapted out or replaced, but that's only to cut out what's not important to the story. If you like the Paper Mario games and enjoy tense action and/or drama, check this story out!

Mama Rosalina by PrincessNellas

  • Synopsis: (From the author) It's the Starbit festival again, and everything is going great. That is, until Bowser comes, and kidnaps the King and Queen of the Mushroom kingdom, leaving their infant daughter behind. Rosalina can't just leave her there; She has to repay Mario for all he's done for her.
  • Comments: This fanfic focuses on Rosalina raising the daughter of Mario and Peach as her own child while the two of them are held in captivity. Be prepared for both heartwarming and heartwrenching moments as well as many a twist. Definitely Darker and Edgier than the main Mario games. Now has a sequel.

Super Mario World (Max Landis) by Max Landis
  • Recommended by drbebop
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Crossover between Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Banjo Kazooie, Conker and MANY more.
  • In 1980s New Jersey, three children mysteriously vanish and are never seen again. They land in a mysterious world of mushrooms, giant bullets and more. Years later, Mario Cassavettes, a failed plumber and alcoholic, discovers the mysterious world and saves it from danger and evil. The three children have now grown up. Craig and Patricia (Peach) Kline now rule over the land with peace and prosperity. However, the third child wishes to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom. That child is now known as Wario. Mario brings his brother, Luigi, to the Mushroom Kingdom where they engage in a war against Wario that will change the Mushroom Kingdom forever.
  • Comments: A really fun and insane script that Max wrote when he was 19. The script is over 400 pages long (That's SEVEN HOURS in movie time) While Landis himself hates it, it's an oddly charming and fun script to read.

Broken Innocence by LuigiWife1551

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: (From the author) Bowser realizes what every parent's worst nightmare is firsthand when he almost loses his youngest child.
  • Comments: This fanfic focuses on Bowser's soft side towards his family (and of course, Bowser Jr.) and portrays Dark Bowser to be a sadistic Hate Sink. This fanfiction can be very heartbreaking to some, especially when the second half begins. A solid recommendation for those who enjoy Bowser and Jr. fanfics.

Mario versus FanFiction by Dr. Alphys
  • Recommended by N8han11
  • Status: Dead. (Images are gone)
  • Synopsis: A comedic retelling of Super Paper Mario, presenting the game's story and gameplay in a more critical light.
  • Comments: Presented from the view of an irritable Mario, Mario versus Fan Fiction takes a critical eye to Super Paper Mario's story and why it doesn't work, all while taking a character with very little personality and making him hilariously brutal towards everything.
    • Seconded. It's been dead for a few years, but what does exist is definitely worth a read.

He Doesn't See Me by StarlitxSky
  • Recommended by The Copy Universe
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Bowser attempts to kidnap Peach yet again, but thanks to a mix-up, his underlings don't bring back the princess he really wants...or do they?
  • Comments: A story mostly told from the point of view of Original Character Rosabelle, and how, thanks to some colorblind Koopa Troopas, she gets mistaken for Princess Peach and kidnapped as a result. Despite how this looks, it's better, and Rosabelle is a realistic woman. All canon characters are in character, and all original characters are portrayed realistically (well, as realistic as the Mario series can be). I fully recommend giving it a read.
    • As someone who got pointed at this fic before, I have to respectfully disagree with this fanfic rec. Characters are indeed derailed (mostly Bowser; it takes a single Anguished Declaration of Love for him to stop chasing after Peach), most of the traits Rosebelle claims to have are nonexistent or never come up again, and as a head’s up, the underage Rosebelle and adult Bowser make love off screen, although there’s er, intimate touching written before that. - Smash Queen

Prettiful Princess by Five "O" Productions
  • Recommended by JaxInvasion
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: A parody work revolving around the crazy antics of Princess Peach and her friends.
  • Comments: A gag-a-day comic starring Peach. Prettiful Princess is one of the funniest Mario fan comics I've read, and I've read a lot. It has a prominent snark and self-awareness, especially in the latter comics. Peach, Toad, and Yoshi have personalities that are breaths of fresh air, while Daisy, Rosalina, and Toadette are a little more similar to their classic counterparts. The dialogue of Luigi and Bowser feels as if it was ripped out of the Paper Mario games themselves! The best way to read the strip is to read back from the first page on the site, which is 351. The comic hardly seems to get any attention, which is a shame, because it is really entertaining. I highly recommend it.
    • The Five "O" Productions website has had it's domain name changed at some point after going dormant in 2019. Many links, such as the navigation buttons for the comic, no longer work properly. Speaking of which, the narrative has some serious thought and heart put into it, and there are Mario references galore. It is truly a must-read for any Mario fan.

  • Synopsis: With their dad's birthday less than a week away, the Koopalings decide to give him the thing he wants the most: the chance to spend it with Princess Peach. To Peach's immense surprise, instead of being the usual kidnapping deal, it ends up making her question everything she's ever thought of Bowser and the Darklands in general.
  • Comments: Set right after Thousand-Year Door, and certainly one of the best Super Mario Bros. fanfics out there. Not only does Razzi keep Bowser in character as the hilarious yet still tyrannical king we all know and love, she also manages to introduce a whole new side of him and a perfectly believable way for Peach to start returning his affections. There's also a huge amount of detail paid to...well, just about everything. The Koopalings, for example, are wonderfully fleshed out, as are Kamek and Kammy — and it even manages to introduce a "side-quest" where Mario and Luigi once again save the day from a minor villain. However, one of the highest points in this fic comes from the analysis of the Peach/Mario pairing, one that manages to shed good light on Bowser/Peach without turning Mario into the Romantic False Lead. Truly a wonderful fic, and kind of surprising that it wasn't already on this list.

  • Pairings: Mario/Bowser, possible Luigi/Yoshi
  • Synopsis: Slash-fic, M/M. A hopeless romantic wonders if he'll ever have what it takes to end a tedious charade. Tired of the lies and secrets, he writes to his beloved about what they can never have. From there, the rest spirals out of his control. Rated T, just in case.
  • Comments: A gripping tale detailing the unlikely ship of Mario/Bowser, playing it realistically as they try to figure out what they should do, as well as how to tell everyone else. Meanwhile, Luigi, the Toads, Yoshi, and Peach follow after in their adventure to rescue Mario, having been accidentally kidnapped by Bowser. Add to this something bigger going on behind the scenes starting with the strange nightmares Mario's been having, and you have a really engaging story.

  • Pairings: Beginning Mario/Peach, Bowser/Peach, Luigi/Daisy (a little), a small hint of Wendy O. Koopa/Boom Boom
  • Synopsis: After Mario and Peach get married, the Koopa Troop abducts her. As she escapes from Bowser's Castle, she finds out disturbing facts about the "good" people close to her. When the Koopas' past comes back to haunt them all, Peach's now forced to fight for good with her archenemies... But she may no longer see the Koopas as enemies.
  • Comments: This story makes the near-impossible Bowser/Peach pairing work by delving deep into the past of the Koopa Kingdom, and the possible reasons why the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopa Troop are always at war. This isn’t a simple fic where Bowser is magically a good guy or Mario’s evil, but rather a possible third-party’s at play. Although most shipping fanfictions focus on the ship itself, this story also focuses on the historical reasons behind the ship.

  • Pairings: Bowser/Fox, Bowser/Peach
  • Synopsis: Fox McCloud randomly meets Bowser, they introduce themselves, and quickly discover mutual attraction, shortly followed by a one-night stand in Bowser's Clown Car. After parting, Fox returns to the Great Fox, but he is lovesick for Bowser. Fox wants to meet Bowser again, but Bowser keeps turning him down, wanting their one-night stand to be in the past. Peach makes a cameo as Bowser's date in the background as he's on the phone with Fox. Later on an Arwing mission (that just happens to be over the same planet Bowser lives), Fox accidentally crashes his Arwing, which is now in ruins. Bowser meets Fox congenially as an old friend. But Bowser quickly breaks down, apologizes to Fox, and promises to make things up to him. They cruise off happily together in Bowser's Clown Car.
  • Comments: A three-page Ho Yay comic, mildly Not Safe for Work. Published on FurAffinity — because of the slightly mature nature of the comic, account registration is required. (Sex is implied, but never seen.) The story runs on a few contrived coincidences that require the MST3K Mantra, but it is still Rule of Cute and can still successfully warm a reader's heart.

  • Synopsis: Three ongoing comics showcasing some of the Mario Brothers' adventures, as well as comical character interactions. The first comic, Super Mario Bros, shows us how Mario and Luigi stumbled into the Mushroom Kingdom and their first journey to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. The second comic, I'd Like You To Meet..., shows us Luigi and Daisy's awkward first date, which only gets worse when the Koopalings kidnap her. And finally, in Meet zah Marios, we meet Mario and Luigi's parents, and their kindly mother ends up being the victim of Bowser's kidnapping this time around.
  • Comments: Extremely cute, light-hearted comics filled with silly humor. The personalities given to all of the characters are the biggest draw, all of them being charming or amusing in some way. A few curse words here and there, but otherwise very innocent, cartoony, and cute.
    • Seconded by Luigifan, these comics are hilarious and filled with Shout Outs.
    • Thirded(?) by Maddy-chan4444. Nintendrawer is such an amazing artist, and her comics have entertained me for years. Her protrayal of the Mario characters and the kinds of stories she writes to show them off really makes the comics a full, unique story. Seriously, her works deserve their own page on this wiki.

  • Synopsis: "On the eve of the Star Festival, Mario and friends find themselves plunged into a grim alternate timeline where the sky is empty and Peach rules as a tyrannical empress. Now they must find their way back home, before "home" is consumed by a new evil that threatens both worlds."
  • Comments: This is one of the best stories I’ve ever read, fanfic or not. In fact, at times it feels like reading a professionally written novel. The author excels at scene descriptions, and their portrayal of the characters is spot-on. (Especially Bowser. You’d think the big guy himself was writing those lines). The plot itself mixes elements from nearly every game, so it really feels like the whole series is being tied together for a glorious Grand Finale.
    • It’s also one of the only fics to utilize the Mario/Vivian pairing, and to explore what a budding relationship between them might be like. If that seems strange to you, give it a try anyway, because their arc is remarkably sweet.

  • Synopsis: This flash movie series, using sprites from the original NES games, takes the typical plot of Peach getting kidnapped by Bowser, but deconstructs it.
  • Comments: Words simply cannot do these flash movies justice, but I'll try. If you ever wanted to see a well-done Darker and Edgier and cynical Mario, complete with a truly dramatic and tear jerking story, along with battles as epic in scope as the ones in the The Lord of the Rings movies, this is a must-see. My favorite flash movie series, along with Power Star (see below) and Super Mario Bros. Z.

Fragments by Verran
  • Recommended by 1Thunderfire, Moonflower 2
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An intensely powerful collection of 'fragments' chronicling what happened after the events of Super Paper Mario. Toadsworth finds that not all is with Mario, Peach and most of all, Luigi and discovers that owing to Dimentio's Floro Sprout, Luigi is living an existence split between two conscious sides, himself and Mr. L, both of whom are being driven insane by each other. The chapters alternate between the present time and Mr. L's therapy sessions with Nastasia as she tries to get both sides to reconcile. Now complete!
  • Comments: Toadsworth really shines as a well-developed character as he tries to do what is best for the kingdom, even if Mario is being very difficult owing to his brother's problems. You will get emotional as your heart simply breaks for the characters, especially Luigi who is simply being mentally and physically tortured because of Dimentio's actions. Mr. L wants to kill Mario, he simply can't switch off his programming, but he doesn't want to die. Neither does Luigi...
    • Seconded. Fragments is hands-down one of the best stories I have ever read, fan-written or not. The character building and development is some of the greatest I've ever seen in any work of fiction, and it manages to expand upon the established conflicts in Super Paper Mario in a very clever, sophisticated, and heartbreaking way. The story's real strong point, however, is how easy it is to become invested in the characters and sincerely care about what happens to them. Luigi, Mr. L, Mario, Peach, Toadsworth, Nastasia ... all of them are fleshed out from plot devices and icons to honest-to-God human beings with complex feelings, conflicts, and motivations. Fragments will always hold a very special place in my heart. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

Daisy's Adventures: Elemental Odyssey by Lucent-Shadow
  • Recommended by The Farmboy
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A new threat have emerged within the Mushroom World, Rosalina have enlisted Daisy and Bowser to stop this unknown menace. An adventure in which they would meet new allies as they are able to control the elements.
  • Comments: A Fanfic with Daisy in the lead, that doesn't revolve around a romance with Luigi? (From the start at least.) What could be better?! The story is rather dark, but the good kind as it is more mature with it's topics rather than just cranking up the sex, slaughter and swearing. If you want to find a good read that would give enough character for the otherwise Red Headed Middle Stepchild of the Mario games as of late, give this one a go! Not giving this a trope page would be a crime.

Well you know what they say.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction...

  • Comments: A slow-paced but gripping comic following Luigi's and Bowser's struggles to survive after a massacre descends upon the castle. What starts off as a role swap develops into something more complicated. The comic gives much needed limelight on Luigi as he copes with guilt while still trying to cling to hope and the development of his friendship with Bowser feels organic. The comic is not for the sensitive, with character deaths, violent imagery, blood and gore. This is a must read for anyone looking for something different with a Mario fanstory.

The Second Reality Project series by FPI.
  • Recommended by NESBoy
  • A fantastic series of Super Mario World ROM hacks, where Mario explores the eponymous dimension. The first game is admitingly the weakest in the series, with a serious case of Platform Hell towards the end of the game. Its only strong point is the excellent level design. FPI later released an SNES version that tones down the Platform Hell, but it wasn't until a few years later when FPI released The Second Reality Project Reloaded, which drops the Princess Peach kidnapping plot thread in order to flesh out the overlying storyline of Bowser's discovery of the Second Reality. It also updates the graphics to a much higher standard and adds a new soundtrack, a new secret world known as Thirdspace, and a new ending, complete with a Sequel Hook if you have 100% Completion. Then there's the sequel, Zycloboo's Challenge which was developed between the original and the remake and thus doesn't have the same level of graphical excellence as Reloaded, but it's still a good game. The upcoming third hack, The Fellowship of the Switch, appears to be turning up the Sequel Escalation with all parties of the TSRP series getting involved, although the storyline isn't properly revealed yet. For something supplementary, try Chaos CompleXX, which is basically Thirdspace from TSRPR infused with Stylistic Suck.

Brutal Mario by Carol.

  • Synposis: Time and time again, Bowser's plans were constantly foiled and peace was restored to the Mushroom Kingdom, thanks to the great hero, Mario. The people of the Mushroom Kingdom praised his heroics. It was said that as long as Mario was alive, the kingdom's prosperity would last forever. Sadly, peace did not last long. Mario was crowned king of the Mushroom Kingdom. There was no end to his tyranny. The land dried up. The people starved. And thus, the kingdom perished. Mario now had his eyes set on conquering the rich Koopa Kingdom, and so, he left the ruined kingdom. However, in the supposedly vanished Mushroom Kingdom, the people swore revenge on Mario. Now, a movement against him began to rise.
  • Comments: One of the greatest SMW hacks out there. The version linked is an earlier demo.
