Darth Wiki / Super High School Level Dangan Ronpa Roleplay

Go To

A roleplay that is based on the plot of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and is hosted on the MSPA Forums. Monobear, claiming to be the school's headmaster, is pretty much doing exactly what he actually does. Fifteen roleplayer-controlled Super High-School Level talented characters enter Hope's Peak academy in Japan, and quickly learn that they are trapped for the rest of their lives. The only way out is to commit the perfect murder - kill someone and don't get caught. Punishment for being caught in the act? Execution by irony. They are given a series of strict rules to follow. Punishment for breaking them? Execution. With each murder the students unlock more and more of the school building, discovering shocking things about the academy - and themselves - in the process.

The full RP can be read here and here.

Characters:

     Characters

Ryuzaki "Zack" Sakamoto

SHSL Acrobat

Player: boredCommentator

Zack was always the type to get hurt and wind up having accidental injuries. However, his natural talent for acrobatics and his fondness for gymnastics led to him insistently continuing in the sport. His dedication and determination led to him being noticed by Hope's Peak, who asked him to come to their school. He accepted, as should be obvious at this point. He was also in an incredibly shitty band with two of his close friends, in which he played the bass guitar mediocrely. Zack was the first culprit, stabbing Charlotte in self-defense. He was convicted and executed by pitfall plunge.
  • Anime Hair
  • Bromantic Foil: Zack is dutiful, active, determined and quick to act while Louis is laid-back, snarky and has a bit of a lazy streak. After Zack's death, Louis actually starts to gain a few of his traits.
  • Butt-Monkey: Sakamoto falls a lot for an acrobat. Even his execution is nothing but a fall!
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He had a rather obvious thing for Olivia, but never so much as said anything about it during the entirety of chapter 1, even though he probably interacted with her more than anyone (minus Louis).
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: In terms of acrobatics, one wouldn't expect one so accident-prone to be so talented. Of course, he's definitely pretty good at it, judging by the tricks he does in the prologue, as well as the fact that, ya know, he's at Hope's Peak for it.
  • Dead Sidekick: An inverted example to Louis after chapter 1, for whatever value of "sidekick" and "leader" the two had, since Zack was definitely the more active of the two.
  • Death by Irony: An accident-prone acrobat killed in a fall.
  • Determinator: His backstory.
  • Tragic Bromance: With Louis. Hell, they'd just rekindled it when the first motive struck.

Sumiko "Harry" Haru

SHSL Mixologist

Player: Varkarrus

Harry always did what she wanted, went where she pleased, whenever she felt like it. Her only father was rarely around, and as a result she became self-reliant. She's very warm and friendly, but never seems to go beyond being just acquaintances with anyone. She failed out of a regular school, because she only showed up when she wanted, and ended up getting a job at a bar (despite being underaged). Her natural skill at mixing drinks has caused her to learn (by her count), 319 different mixes for any situation. Her skill made the bar receive country-wide fame, which also alerted the police to her fake ID. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) for her, a certain high school also recognized her talent. Survives the whole event.

Charlotte Moorbsitck

SHSL Magician

Player: awesomeIdiot

Charlotte had always had a passion for the unexpected; she always seemed to be very chaotic and never had much regard for law or order. In addition, she always loved to surprise people, often when said surprises seemed inappropriate or had bad timing. Due to this, she was drawn to magic at around 8 years old, astounded by how all of the tricks were so unexpected and how everything seemed to be pulled out of thin air. Ever since then, she has tried very hard to master the art of illusion, and it seems to have paid off, considering that the prestigious Hope's Peak High has requested she become a student there. Charlotte was the first victim, dying at the hands of Zack after she attacked him.

Jason Daniels

SHSL Artist

Player: ShadowsEve

Jason had always had an eye for colors. Wherever he went, he noticed the perfect blends, and the horrid mixtures of colors. This lead to him taking up art at a young age. He constantly drew, and found out he had a natural talent for it. Years passed by as he kept drawing, and got the attentions of many people and organizations who wanted his talent for their own various reasons. One of those organizations was Hope's Peak High, which when he got the invitation, accepted without a second thought. Jason was the second victim, frozen solid by Meg.

Daniel Marche

SHSL Archer

Player: Bluesunnyday

Daniel practiced archery for most of his life, ever since he was big enough to hold a bow properly. After years of hard, rigorous practice, Daniel eventually managed to make his big break. He entered an Archery contest for the prize money, to contribute to his ailing father's hospital funds, and he managed to succeed by splitting a competitor's arrow clean in half in the dead center of the target. This got him the attention of the school. Daniel was executed by arrows during the prologue for destroying a security camera.

Izumi Nakamoto

SHSL Cook

Player: cloudNinja

The daughter of a French pastry chef and Japanese sushi master, Izumi grew up with a passion for food. Her palate is refined enough that she can guess with 99% accuracy the ingredients in almost every type of food, even down to differentiating individual artificial flavorings and colorings. She can judge a person's preferred flavors based on their personality, and has made a name for herself by creating personalized "flavor profiles" tailored for an individual to improve their mood and their health. Her talent for cooking has caught the eye of Hope's Peak Academy. Izumi was the third culprit, poisoning Rimmy. She was convicted and executed by baking her into an Izumi cake.

Dominic Marino

SHSL Musician

Player: invisibleTerrarium

A very distant relative of the legendary Red Priest and Baroque composer, Antonin Vivaldi, Dominic hails from Italy, where he was schooled in music under his father, Giuseppe. He has a penchant for instruments of all kinds, musical composition, an amazing ability to play by ear, and above-average hearing to boot. He had a falling-out with his father recently when he bought a laptop and began composing dubstep, to "keep up with the times." Giuseppe very nearly disowned him. Dominic immediately accepted a request to join Hope's Peak to get away from Giuseppe. He succeeded, but at what cost? Dominic was the fourth culrprit, drowning Hitoshi in the pool. He was convicted and executed by weaponized soundwaves.

Louis Saunterton

SHSL Good Luck

Player: boredCommentator

He doesn't seem to remember why he was accepted to Hope's Peak, and no one else can tell him either, for obvious reasons. He was always a quiet and shy kid, though his cousin had helped him out of his shell. He's still very quiet and more than a little snarky, but he played lead guitar quite well in a shitty band for awhile before having a falling-out with the bassist over whether wizards are superior to space marines. It got violent. The band, and his life, sort of fell apart into despair and everything's a blur from there (he started dying his hair at some point). He was hopeful that Hope's Peak, given its reputation, could help him improve out his life again, and he accepted the letter without even reading what it said. It is anticlimactically revealed in chapter 4 that he won the annual SHSL Good Luck contest. Still alive as of Chapter 5
  • Affably Evil: When aligned with Super High-school Level Despair. Rimmy Took a Level in Jerkass and was kinda obvious, but everything we've seen of pre-incident Louis has made him out as rather friendly.
  • Born Lucky: Averted. He shows few actual signs of luck.
  • Bromantic Foil: Zack is dutiful, active, determined and quick to act while Louis is laid-back, snarky and has a bit of a lazy streak. After Zack's death, Louis actually starts to gain a few of his traits, namely the active role in the group and determination.
  • Character Development: As mentioned above, he starts to pick up the slack for Sakamoto's absence after getting out of his Heroic BSoD.
  • Deadpan Snarker: The biggest in the cast.
  • Heroic BSoD: After Zack's execution, though he gets past it.
    • Another after the realization that the Mutual Killing game was between years-long friends and acquaintances.
  • Implausible Deniability: As it grew more and more obvious that Zack was the first culprit.
  • Informed Flaw: We're told he's very quiet in his character bio, but he's perfectly sociable.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: He seems to be... Looking forward to the fifth trial.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: They did the thing.
  • The Smart Guy: Not as pronounced as Cassandra, but he's actually quite intelligent and quick to get a grip on the situation (when his best friend isn't the murderer).

Cassandra Petros

SHSL Persuader

Player: invisibleTerrarium

A small and quiet girl, exceptionally verbose when she does speak. She was born in Greece but emigrated to the US at the age of three. She picked up English very quickly, but did not tell anyone about it simply because no one asked. This became her modus operandi: do not speak unless spoken to. At six her intelligence and persuasive skill became apparent. Something in her voice, on the rare occasions she uses it, triggers some psychological connection in the brain that makes people instinctively want to do what she says. Her quiet, antisocial demeanor caused people to genuinely dislike her for no reason, and she became distrustful as a result. She was so silent that it eventually even increased her persuasiveness; people now thought that whenever she said something, it was important, that she only spoke up if the thing she was saying was of massive importance to whatever the matter at hand is. She still stays quiet even now, halfway to not accidentally influence someone, half because of her motto. Still alive as of the beginning of Chapter 5.

Rimmy Reigner

SHSL Actor

Player: Silvak

As a child, Rimmy always had a knack of being someone else, to the point where no one really knew what type of person Rimmy actually was. You would see him acting as if he had a tragic past one day, he had a rich family the other, and so on; no one could tell what was true and what was false about this young man. Growing up, Rimmy competed in many drama competitions, fulfilling his roles almost as if he was born for that one character all his life, and that he was the character; though as soon the curtain fell, he would assume the role of someone else. Rimmy's knack for assuming other roles is what landed him into the Hopes peak academy. Rimmy was the third victim, poisoned by <del>Harry</del> Izumi, though there seems to have been more to his death than it appeared.

Emil Castello

SHSL Storyteller

Player: IceeBlue

The son of a rather reclusive author of a father, Emil grew up appreciating his father’s literary works. The more he read his stories, the more he became determined in sharing them with the rest of the world. And determined he was; in time, his storytelling skills caught the hearts and minds of many people as they become immersed in the story itself, right till the last line. He would also share a few tales that caught his fancy every now and then, no matter how ridiculous they sound. His enthusiasm in remembering and sharing stories caught the attention of Hope’s Peak Academy not long after… and he accepted their offer. What kinds of adventure await him inside their school halls? Still alive as of the ending.

Megara "Meg" Calilio

SHSL Pyro

Player: FieryMoonlight

She has always preferred to be alone when she was younger, but wasn't afraid to voice her opinions. This seems to have remained with her even now. When she was 5 years old her entire house went up in flames, she immediately became enchanted with the fire and ran into the burning house. When she entered the home the flames engulfed the exits and she came extremely close to death though she She has always preferred to be alone when she was younger, but wasnt afraid to voice her opinions. This seems to have remained with her even now. When she was 5 years old her entire house went up in flames, she immediately became enchanted with the fire and ran into the burning house. She wasn't scared at all, she actually sat down and just watched the flames. Eventually when a fireman pulled her out of the house they were surprised to find that the only evidence that she had even been near the fire were the smudges of soot all over her clothing. As the years went by she continued playing with fire and now she can make a flame with just about anything. Hence why she was invited to the school. Upon receiving the invitation she readily accepted, her reasons are her own. Meg froze Jason to death in chapter 2, but committed suicide afterwards, apparently out of guilt.

Olivia Caparelli

SHSL Cheerleader

Player: spongefan12

Olivia always wanted to perform amazing stunts and sing at the same time at a concert, inspired by Idol Singers and cheerleaders in equal amounts. She thought as a child that cheerleaders could do bigger things than just look pretty and do great gymnastics. She tried to setup a cheerleader team and had a chunk of members in the past. She dreamed about having a super team of idol cheerleaders by her side by the time she turned 16, gaining legions of fans, a dream that seems to be somewhat realized, as she was beginning to rapidly gain popularity. At the moment, though, she currently intends to make some regular friends at Hope's Peak Academy, who took an interest in the raw talent in the field of cheer of this rising star. Still alive as of chapter 5.
  • The Generic Girl: Despite the below-mentioned Hidden Depths, she's still far from the most rounded character.
  • Hidden Depths: As elaborated in her backstory, her talent stems at least from an urge to turn it into a more appreciated art.
    • She also voted for killing the amnesiac Despair in the final trial, giving some insight as to what she had been thinking the entire time.
  • Nice Girl
  • Out of Focus: Despite surviving the entire story so far. Louis suspects it's a skill in and of itself.

Jack "The Searcher" Stevens

SHSL Historian

Player: Shockwave

During the earlier years of his life, Jack was quite the shut-in. He had very little social interaction and he often spent hours of the night trying to find himself. This was inspired by his parents' rather spiritualistic way of life. However, when he went to primary school, he discovered one subject that he enjoyed immensely: history. In what would be the American equivalent of Junior High, he started a project called "The Junior Historian Project", in which he he and his friends try to re-write their 7th year history book more accurately, with more important details. The project was an overwhelming success, inspiring something beyond an ordinary hobby, the fruits of which were viewed by the eyes of many, including Hope's Peak. While he is a great historian, he is quite aloof, and rarely talks. He also has a tendency to abuse LSD, a vice that started due to his mother's negligence. His father died after Jack was accepted into Hope's Peak, an event that took quite a toll on his mental stability. Still alive as of chapter 5.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Retroactively, in the bad ending.
  • Character Development: By far the most noticeable example of the cast.
  • Dye Hard: Not outright stated, but with the Word of God that he's an albino, it's easy enough to piece together that his hair is not naturally that color.
  • Jerkass: At first in the story. Implied to have been this throughout most of the normal school life as well.

Hitoshi Watanabe

SHSL Leader

Player: TruthHurts22

As a kid, his parents always told him to "be as best he can be" and "reach for the stars". A bit corny, maybe, but ever since they both died, he was determined to take those words to his grave. So, living with his grandparents, he grew up to be one of those bossy and snooty kids, who must always be in charge of everything and everyone. Be it through a stroke of luck or determination or whatever you want to call it, he became quite the efficient leader in life, and has thus became his school's student body president every time he's run (not to say he's the nicest leader, of course). He received the letter from Hope's Peak after organizing an entire year's worth of school events, and he was quite glad to go, albeit more interested in the privilege of attending than meeting the other SHSL students, though he will openly admit that he believes many of his former school acquaintances weren't worth the privilege of his time. Hitoshi was the fourth victim, drowned in the pool by Dominic.
  • Informed Attribute: His talent, as lampshaded by Louis.
    • Subverted as of the flashback video, in which it's heavily implied he led all of the cast to Hope's Peak and convinced them to stay there. It's possible that, pre-memory erasure, they had actually come to respect him and his talent.
  • Killed Off for Real: Drowned by Dominic. There was a half-assed attempt to dry his body off using the furnace, but he was dropped in and unrecognizably scorched.
  • The Napoleon: Downplayed, he's only 5'6. Of course, the trope namer was taller than that.

Yuu Fukui/Eraldo Coil/John Smith/Patrick Stewart/Carmen Sandiago/Newton Pulsifer

SHSL Inventor

Player: boredCommentator

He is extremely aloof and generally uncaring about the world around him, due to which he perfectly maintains a cheerful personality. He also has a tendency to prank and generally mess with people, which, due to what seems to be a lack of empathy, can often go too far and/or earn the ire of those around him. Thus, he has extremely few friends. He's also an opportunist at heart, siding with whatever side he feels he will enjoy most. He has a fascination with robotics, programming and inventing/designing things in general, and has designed several top-secret weapons for countless organizations, governments and groups, all fetching him a very pretty penny, which he puts toward his increasingly-massive collection of video games, shonen and seinen anime and manga, and the merchandise for such (after putting money into resources for his projects, typically). He also has countless assumed names and false identities, under which he conducts these purchases and deals, not wanting the media attention that he is sure would be given to him if he did not (one of these identities is credited with the invention of the Weaponized Bass Cannon, and another with a more lethal variant of said Bass Cannon). However, Hope's Peak managed to discover that his several names were all connected to one person after he failed to properly cover his tracks in a failed weapons deal whose details remain strictly confidential. During chapter 5, after he attempted to make a game out of "escaping" the school by blowing it all up with everyone in it, sending the cast on a collection mission, he was found outside the data processing room, with several dozen small, open cuts, filled with the Monobear bomb replicas of his own creation. However, it turned out that he was not only not dead, but that he was the mastermind behind everything. In the true ending, he winds up executed by failure to disarm several explosives.

     WMG
  • The mastermind is Rimmy, who pulled something like the Enoshima Twin Switch from the first game with Captain Asshat.
    • But... There's no evidence whatsoever they have any relation, let alone that they're twins.

     Trivia

    Funny
  • Zack attempts to intimidate Charlotte.
Zack: Who did this?! I know sudoku, you know!
    He's facing the wrong direction.
  • Zack attempts to clear his name.
Zack: You didn't see anything just now, right? Because I totally didn't just trip there before doing a kickass backflip.
  • Zack and Jason's discussion on Daniel.
Zack: What could someone who won't even show up to the suddenly massively-vaulted entrance of the school be hiding?
Jason: Try everything.. And in this case, I mean most literally everything.
  • Pretty much everything Dominic does in the prologue.
Dominic: There is no need to be so rude about it.
Dominic: There is also no response to that question that will not result in me looking like a fool.
    • There's also this one.
Zack: And the last horse crosses the finish line.
Dominic: I... Do not understand. Is there a Super High-School Level Jockey amongst us?
Jason: No, he was saying you are oblivious and or dense. You also just proved his point. Congratulations.
  • Daniel is so great at subtly hitting on Harry, isn't he?
Daniel: So, um, Miss Haru... No hard feelings, right? This won't impact any kind of rela- friendship we may have in the future?
    Smooooooth Casanova.
  • Cassie is oddly self-aware while tripping.
Louis: Uh, Casandra, why so casual?
Cassandra: I am high out of my fucking mind.
  • There's something amusing about how everyone reacts with Dull Surprise to seeing the headmaster's remains, as if they're not surprised in the slightest.
Cassandra: Bing bong, a body's been discovered. Can we execute Monobear yet?
  • FIVE FOOT ONE, BITCHES!
  • Pretty much everything detailed in the photos found in the sixth chapter.
  • Pretty much everything that happens during the Overly Long Gag when the Big Bad tries to dramatically reveal themselves. First, He causes a dramatic smoke effect, and when it parts... No one's there, since he couldn't exactly run 4+ floors down in such a short time. Then the elevator breaks after he calls it up, so he runs all the way back up to the control room to announce that technical difficulties are being experienced. What follows is over half an hour of the cast just waiting around for him to fix the elevator. When it finally starts to move down and the doors to it reopen, they spot him loudly singing. Louis even lampshades that if the situation wasn't so serious it would be hilarious. Truly a delightful last bit of Mood Whiplash brfore the Wham Lines start rolling.
  • I dare you tell me that you did not at least smile a bit at Cassandra's huge rant in Chapter 6's Bad Ending.
  • Pretty much everything Jack says while tripping balls during chapter 1's investigation. He just continually interrupts other peoples' rather serious conversations.
Louis: What the hell kind of SHSL Leader leaves the room because people are following someone else?
Jack: Someone who thinks they're soooo high and mighty.
Hitoshi: Yeah, well, they obviously aren't going to listen to me either way, you've seen how eager they were to do so before. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a kitchen to investigate. Do whatever you want, because I don't care anymore.

    YMMV
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • In the last two trials, has Louis become a smug asshole about thinking he's figured everything out and not telling the others? Is he cross with everyone for their suspecting him of being against them and less helpful because of it? Is he trying to be a Stealth Mentor and letting the others think for themselves?
    • Did Dominic really kill Hitoshi for the noble reasons he tried to tell the others he did? Is Rimmy secretly Obfuscating Stupidity so no one suspects something more sinister? Is Charlotte an admittedly quick-tempered girl whose issues are exacerbated by stress or a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing? Speaking of Charlotte, while it is generally seen that Zack killed her in self-defense, that doesn't answer the question of why he had that third knife in the first place. One could argue it was only intended as a dissuadant, it could also be inferred that Sakamoto had killing intent from the getgo.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Monobear's repeated insinuations that the cast are... Doing things can come across this way because he makes this belief clear so damn much during chapter 4.
    • The Super High-school Level Inventor casually crushing the Izumi cake while Harry watches.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Both the players in the thread and those who've read it alike have shown a fondness for the antics of Rimmy Reigner, who had some of the funniest lines in the first half of the series.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Louis, in the video of everyone agreeing to stay in the school, points out that there's "no one he'd rather be trapped with" than this group. It's heartwarming, in a weird sort of way, right? He is an amnesiac member of SHSL Despair and was more than likely planning on forcing the Mutual Killing game alongside Rimmy at the time. His kind comment becomes outright sadistic as a result.
  • He's Just Hiding: Was a popular idea for the SHSL Inventor, given how likely it was that the fifth corpse wasn't even actually him. It turned out to be correct.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Varkarrus, Harry's RPer, at one point noted unintentional similarities between her muse and Ryuko Matoi. Come the final episode of Kill La Kill, Ryuko has gone on a date with Mako, who for much of the series constituted half of a Pseudo-Romantic Friendship with her. Harry is a lesbian.
  • Ho Yay: Louis has hit on much of the male cast. Though this doesn't count on its own, given that he is Straight Gay, the fact that none of them seem to outright reject him does. His general interactions with Jack can also come across as very much this. Exaggerated in Harry's photograph in the sixth investigation: Louis is specifically mentioned as feeding Jack cake. Then in Emil's photo, he is wearing Jack's shades.
  • Moral Event Horizon: The sixteenth student/Super High-school Level Inventor uncaringly crushes the Izumi cake with a gift he had rejected. While Harry watched. And if that wasn't enough, he plans to "escape" by blowing the entire place up with everyone in it. When Jack tells him that this is dangerous with all of them inside, he effectively says "well, that's your problem" and continues on his merry way.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Every single death, obviously, but the first and third executions are particularly poignant for how Louis and Harry react to them respectively.
    • There's something upsetting about how quickly Louis' mood drops when Cassandra breaks his trust in the fifth trial.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Due to Real Life Writes the Plot reasons, Daniel and later Megara, especially with the latter's largely unexplained Dark and Troubled Past. Charlotte, the first victim, was very unique and enigmatic as well, and the threadrunner somewhat regrets offing her so early off.
  • The Un-Twist: Actually quite a few, namely that Sakamoto killed Charlotte, Megara offed Jason in a murder-suicide, and that the SHSL Inventor is the Big Bad.
  • The Woobie:
    • Izumi Nakamoto definitely takes the situation worse than everyone else, even getting sick for a large portion of Chapter 1 at the idea of Mutual Killing and frequently crying. She also has a high tendency to cook until she's unable to move as a way to cope with stress. She still manages to be one of the most sympathetic culprits despite going for the money motive, especially given the nature of her execution and that she confessed out of guilt as Harry was about to take the fall.
    • Megara Calilio, since everything we know about her screams Dark and Troubled Past, and we learn in Chapter 6 that she was coerced into being the SHSL Inventor's mole to protect someone who was dead.

This RP contains examples of...

  • Absence of Evidence: There's three knives missing instead of two in the first trial.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: All the culprits get lots of sympathy before their executions.
    • It is generally understood that Zack wound up killing Charlotte out of self-defense.
    • Meg committed suicide out of guilt after killing Jason. This one gets even worse when it's revealed that she had been coerced into acting as the mole over someone close to her's safety, only to somehow regain her memories and learn that that person was already dead. This, coupled with the realization of what she'd done to one of her schoolmates of multiple years probably sent her barreling over the Despair Event Horizon.
    • Izumi killed Rimmy for the money, to save her family's bakery from bankruptcy and broke down and confessed when she was nearly let off the hook by Harry's refusal to go against allegations against her.
    • Dominic, as a final gesture, slipped Louis the USB containing Alter Ego.
    • Though not a culprit, the Super High-school Level Inventor was an utter Jerkass. No, scratch that, he was The Sociopath. He had one of the grossest deaths, though. This one is subverted; he's alive and well, having been Faking the Dead. And now it's come full circle, since as he's finally about to face execution in the "good/true" ending path, and he is clearly fucking terrified of this fact.
  • Alternate Continuity: Confirmed via Word of God during chapter 6, though it was kinda obvious already.
  • Asshole Victim: Charlotte attacked first.
  • Badass Cape: Rimmy and Charlotte.
  • Big Bad: Whoever's controlling Monobear. It's the SHSL Inventor.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: There were plants for Super High-school Level Despair among those who fled to the school under Hitoshi's lead. However, the SHSL Inventor kicked them out of their position of power after they caused the death of the headmaster and effectively hijacked their mission. The first one was Rimmy. The second, if one takes the bad ending as providing canon information, was Louis.
  • Big Red Button: Monobear's got one that he uses to start the executions.
  • Book Dumb: Dominic subverts it a little by being of reasonable intelligence in every subject but English.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Rimmy Riegner is an incredibly skilled actor despite (and perhaps even because of) his eccentricities, and also a surprisingly skilled programmer, being able to create Alter Ego (who, in canon, was created by a Super High-school Level Programmer who had been studying artificial intelligence for years). However, the skill causes people to suspect there's more to him than he lets on and posthumously distrust him, especially with the reveal that the sixteenth student is an extremely talented inventor capable of disguising himself as others. though it's unknown if there is truly anything sinister about him at this point.
  • Butt-Monkey: Ryuzaki "Zack" Sakamoto is on the receiving end of a lot of slapstick and tripping early on, and is noted to be extremely accident-prone in his backstory.
  • Chekhov's Boomerang: Dominic is mentioned as having a laptop on him during the prologue for music-making purposes, though it seemingly vanishes from the plot after he becomes humorously distraught over there being no internet connection. It starts to become a plot device time and time again in the latter two thirds of the story, what with storing a backup of Alter Ego, being swapped out for Alter Ego's original laptop, and being used to watch the DVD located in the headmaster's secret room.
  • Conviction by Contradiction: Dominic is convicted when he claims that he went to the music room the morning of Hitoshi's murder, contradicting his previous statement that he went to the pool, where Hitoshi was drowned.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Rimmy Reigner seems to be in his own little world more often than not.
  • Closed Circle: Half the entire point.
  • Deadpan Snarker: A lot of the cast members can really lay down the snark, but Louis and Cassandra are most likely to.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Ryuzaki "Zack" Sakamoto, who was set up by the thread's creator as a Standardized Leader, got along fairly well with much of the cast, and was the first character in the thread. He murders Charlotte in self-defense and is promptly executed.
  • Death by Origin Story: Hitoshi's parents, Megara's entire family, Cassandra's brother and Jack's old girlfriend.
  • Determinator: In Zack's backstory, he was extremely accident prone, but still managed to become a Super High-school Level Acrobat.
  • Driven to Suicide: Megara after regaining some memory that caused her to feel immense guilt over the death of Jason, Cassandra's older brother due to her accidentally abusing her persuasive powers.
  • Evil Laugh: Monobear's "Upupupu," as per canon. The SHSL Inventor has a low chuckle, and whoever's side he's on he's far from nice.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Louis mentions offhand during Chapter 4 that he had thought Rimmy looked taller in pictures he'd seen of him. Given the direct parallel to something said about the Big Bad in canon, it is unknown if this is decisive evidence or a deliberate Red Herring.
  • Fake Band: The Undead Hynos, which Louis, Zack and Shane (who is The Ghost because he is not a Hope's Peak student) formed at some point before the former two had a falling out and eventually came to Hope's Peak.
  • Famed In-Story: Downplayed, as Zack and Louis mention being fans of Dominic offhand in the prologue, and Olivia is apparently a rising star.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: The sixteenth student, a SHSL inventor.
  • The Ghost:
    • Shane, who is/was a close friend and bandmate of Louis and Zack at some point in the past. He's shown up in hallucinations/flashbacks (though the readers don't know what he looks like due to the medium).
    • The Sixteenth Student/Super High-school Level Inventor starts as one, but as of page 42 of the second thread, he finally averts this.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Charlotte seems to have one, getting furious at the announcement of the rules of the "game" and almost immediately trying to kill someone upon viewing the first "motive."
  • Heroic BSoD: Lots. It's almost become par for a chapter to have at least one.
    • Louis gets one in the first trial after Zack's rather graphic execution.
    • Cassandra has one in chapter 2 after being accused of murder after she already forced her brother to kill himself at the age of ten.
    • Harry gets a gigantic one towards the end of chapter 3 leading into most of chapter four following Izumi's execution. She tries to drown her sorrows and gets crazy drunk off a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.
    • Cassandra has another one after Louis falls off Detention and into the garbage chute.
    • Really Cassandra is the crown princess of this trope, as she gets another one in chapter 6 when she drops her cool veneer and everything goes to hell. She gets over that one quick, though.
  • Idiot Hair: Emil, and damn proud of it.
  • I Have Many Names: The Sixteenth Student, going by countless pseudonyms, most of which being a Shout-Out to something. He is currently known to go by John Smith, Eraldo Coil, Carmen Sandiego, Patrick Stewart, Yuu Fukui and Newton Pulsifer.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: After Izumi's execution, Monobear partakes in a slice of the cake that he made out of her. Assuming he's controlled by a human being, it counts as this.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Harry nearly kills everyone by taking the blame for Izumi's murder, out of love. If Izumi wasn't straight, she never had the chance to act on it before her execution.
  • Informed Ability: Hitoshi Watanabe is a SHSL Leader who is never respected enough by the cast for them to ever actually listen to him.
  • Jerkass:
  • Large Ham: Rimmy Reigner.
  • Magical Girl: Charlotte has many similarities to one, and Louis even suspects that that's exactly what she is. We never find out.
  • Magicians Are Wizards: Charlotte is heavily implied to have some actual magical ability, particularly because when she returns the toast she had made disappear, it was perfectly untoasted bread. Louis even wonders if she's a magical girl during one of his longer stays in the sauna. Given that she was the first victim, it seems unlikely we'll learn the truth.
  • The Man Behind the Man: It is implied that Junko Enoshima, canonical head and founder of Super High-school Level Despair, still fills said position, but evidence at the moment is against her being the one controlling Monobear.
  • Moral Event Horizon: An in-universe example: after his Character Development, Louis has stated that he considers anyone who kills an immediate enemy, which is shown to be the case when he seems completely unsympathetic throughout Dominic's insistence on why he murdered Hitoshi Watanabe. However, he was strangely sympathetic towards Izumi, despite the fact that she killed for the monetary motive.
  • Morality Pet or Morality Chain: Cassandra's become this for Jack, who's become far more consistently friendly and docile ever since their Relationship Upgrade.
  • Mythology Gag: Several references to the cast of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc are made, particularly earlier on.
  • Nice Guy: Jason Daniels, being very friendly and helpful despite, if having a bit of a tendency towards graffiti. It kills him when he accept a request to grab something for Louis from the storage room, springing the trap that kills him when he goes to grab it.
  • Only Sane Man: Several characters play at several different points, though Jason, Cassandra and arguably Louis fit the mold best.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Cassandra opts to take LSD with Jack shortly after they hook up, though only after making him promise not to use it again.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Louis.
  • Out of Focus:
    • Olivia and Emil don't seem to do much, but they've outlived most of the cast, including several of the most focused-on cast members, and it's very likely they'll survive this entire thing.
    • Lampshaded when Cassandra suggests that Emil go for a task that they would prefer Monobear not notice them do, citing that "we never have any idea where the hell [Emil is]." Louis, in turn, suggests that Olivia take up the same task, pointing out that it's "funny that someone with [Olivia's] talent is so good at slipping under the radar."
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Louis and Zack showed signs of being this, having been close friends until a falling-out before the story and quickly rekindling their friendship upon remeeting. It doesn't end well, with Louis vehemently denying that Zack is the first culprit, even as it grows increasingly obvious, triggering a Heroic BSoD upon his execution.
  • Freudian Trio:
    • Louis, Cassandra, and Jack are one of the most apparent examples, though Louis tends toward Superego out of necessity during the thick of trials.
    • Among the most competent and overall level-headed cast members, we have Jason, Cassandra, and Louis, though Louis didn't really have a chance to show off his cleverness until after Jason had died, given that much of the first trial was spent with him in denial over Zack being the killer.
    • In Louis, Zack, and Shane's Fake Band, The Undead Hypnos, from what little we know about them during that time, Shane was definitely The McCoy, being somewhat off the wall, while Louis was The Kirk, as the band's head, and Zack was The Spock, having a tendency to play the Straight Man to both of them.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The reason for the deaths of Daniel Marche and Megara Calilio was that the people playing them could no longer participate for personal reasons, according to boredCommentator (who specifically asked that this page not be made and is rather annoyed that people went ahead and made this anyway, by the way).
  • Red Herring:
    • The gold-painted ornamental sword was a vital part of the actual game's first trial, and a point was made of Louis giving it to Sakamoto during chapter 1. It isn't even remotely involved in the first murder, though it does become a sort of Tragic Keepsake when Louis manages to get his hands back on it. It's overall unimportant to the plot, though.
    • In the final trial, there are way more plot threads hinted at than can be truly relevant.
  • Running Gag:
    • Dominic would constantly get bottles of water from the Monomono Machine, much to his frustration.
    • Louis making "SO MUCH FUCKING TOAST." Later taken even further with him making absurd amounts of fucking garlic toast.
    • Zack tripping or screwing up after trying to look cool was another early one.
    • There was one for a while where Dominic would speak rapid-fire Italian out of depression the morning after the trial, then the second anyone suggests he do something, he's right back in English as if nothing ever happened. It got dropped after a while though.
    • Super High-school Level Inventor making it painfully obvious that he's doing something extremely immoral at best, then laughing it off and discussing something else. And everyone involved falls for it each time.
    • Only being mentioned in the final trial, even, and coupled with Overly Long Gag, would be the suddenly-malfunctioning elevator.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Harry hints that she suspects that Louis and Zack are something more. Given that she said this shortly before Zack's execution when Louis was in beginning his Heroic BSoD, the insinuation was not appreciated.
    • On a meta level, many of the players shipped Cassandra and Jack after much Ship Tease, ultimately resulting in their players opting to give them a Relationship Upgrade.
  • Spanner in the Works:
    • Monobear, not unlike canon, showed everyone photos of every student but the one shown the picture together in order to sow distrust. However, they'd already seen the entirety of the video in which they'd all agreed to stay in Hope's Peak on Dominic's laptop thanks to Cassandra, a fact that Monobear seems entirely unaware of.
    • The Big Bad himself is revealed to have been this for Rimmy Reigner and the other unknown SHSL Despair member. He gave them a nice dose of Laser-Guided Amnesia alongside everyone else and took over their plan.
  • Straight Gay: Louis is this, despite the blue-dyed hair and pink jacket. Harry is also an example, though it's not immediately brought up in her case.
  • Supreme Chef: Izumi Nakamoto, most often seen in the form of baked goods.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: One of the final six survivors had joined Super High-school Level Despair at some point before the story began.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • Downplayed. Zack and Dominic get so an Oh, Crap! moment when they're cornered.
    • Izumi Nakamoto plays it straight, albeit in a much sadder and sympathetic light than most cases. Her breakdown starts when she's about to win, when, unable to stand someone willingly taking the fall for her, she confesses.
    • Megara Calilio suffers a breakdown triggered by some sort of memory that ends in her being Driven to Suicide.
    • In the true ending, the Big Bad clearly flips the fuck out when they're about to be executed, their previously calm and whimsical demeanor fading immediately.
  • Will They or Won't They?: So much with Ryuzaki Sakamoto and Olivia's interactions. Given that Sakamoto dies quickly and Olivia survives the whole thing, it's safe to say that they don't, at least during the school life. It's extremely ambiguous during the two prior years no one remembers, for obvious reasons.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Louis gives this to much of the remaining cast in Chapter 6, who, after Cassandra revealed his false statement during the trial, collectively grabbed the Idiot Ball and decided to vote for him, despite the fact that they'd damn near figured the entire trial out at that point. When he turns out just fine, he's clearly pissed off, but it's unseen as of yet if this will affect his judgement throughout the final chapter.
