Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the new Complete Monster (CM) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List. Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a CM has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's CMs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any CM link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an CM link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved CMs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their CM equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Right with the Spyro page almost complete, got some minor edits to some of the candidates listed since there's some minor inaccuracies and some info that I think could be added.

Originals

  • Year of the Dragon: The Sorceress is the cruel ruler of the Forgotten Worlds. Manipulating her apprentice Bianca into abducting 150 Dragon Eggs under the guise of restoring magic to her kingdom, the Sorceress quickly reveals the true depths of her selfishness and hypocrisy. Completely uncaring of the lives of her men, the Sorceress transforms her own minions into freakish monsters to fight Spyro, and ultimately plans to create a monster to wipe out every dragon, even the hatchlings, all so she can collect their wings for a spell that will give her eternal youth. She nonchalantly states that she doesn't even have to kill them; she just doesn't want them wriggling around while she removes their wings. A genocidal tyrant who only cares about herself, the Sorceress stands out as the darkest and purest villain in the original Spyro trilogy.
  • Shadow Legacy: The Sorcerer is a Purple Dragon who believes that he is a "True Dragon", claiming that the other dragons are not true dragons. Prior to the events of the game, the Sorcerer corrupts Red with his magic, and orders him to place life draining Dark Gems across the realms to poison the life of the world. After Red's defeat, the Sorcerer creates three Shadow Amplifier Machines to pull everyone, including children, to the Shadow Realm so he can drain them of their magic, which involves torturing and killing them. When Bianca tries to stop him, the Sorcerer easily defeats her and orders Red to use her as bait for Spyro so he can kill him. When Spyro finally confronts the Sorcerer, he offers to make Spyro his apprentice, only for him to reject him anyways, deeming him too small and weak, before attempting to kill him for interfering his plans. A cruel, dark being who believes himself to be superior to the other dragons, the Sorcerer serves as one of Spyro's darkest foes.
  • Malefor is a monstrously evil dragon responsible for the trilogy's events. Banished by the Dragon Elders after succumbing to his own ambition and megalomania, Malefor formulated a new army and waged war against his own kind before being sealed away. To stop the prophecy of the Purple Dragon, Malefor had his Ape servants raid the Dragon Temple and smash all of the Eggs within. Seeking to be released from his prison, Malefor provided Gaul the dark magic in which he could corrupt the hatchling Cynder into a loyal servant, having her torture and drain the magic of the Dragon Elders to aid him. Free from his prison, Malefor "rewards" his Ape army by stripping them of their flesh and forcing them to live in the shadows. Creating a new army of Grublins from the earth, Malefor has them ravage the surface, killing all within their path. Fond of crushing the hope of his enemies, Malefor has his armies retreat from the Siege of Warfang, only to allow the Golem the opportunity to wreak destruction upon the city. Intending on bringing about "The Great Cleansing", Malefor resurrects The Destroyer and attempts to use it to bathe the world in a blazing inferno and extinguish all that lives.
  • The Eternal Night: Gaul is the leader of the Apes who seeks to release Malefor from his prison. Prior to the story, Gaul personally led the raid on the Dragon Temple, destroying every Dragon Egg there. Taking Cynder's Egg back to his lair, Gaul uses Malefor's magic to warp the young Cynder into an instrument of war, keeping her aware of her actions, and through her had countless innocents enslaved or slaughtered. In the second game, Gaul has his followers siege the Dragon Temple again purely to kill Spyro. Later in the game, Gaul commits an attack on the Skavenger's ship, leaving it to burn with its inhabitants inside. Before the final battle, Gaul drains Spyro of his strength and forces Cynder to try and kill him. Despite having a deep hatred for dragons, Gaul committed many atrocities under Malefor's command purely to obtain more power.

Rewrites

  • Year of the Dragon: The Sorceress is the cruel ruler of the Forgotten Worlds. Manipulating her apprentice Bianca into abducting 150 Dragon Eggs under the guise of restoring magic to her kingdom, the Sorceress reveals the true depths of her selfishness and hypocrisy, with her true intentions being to collect the dragon hatchling's wings for a spell to gain immortality — nonchalantly stating that she doesn't even have to kill them; she just doesn't want them wriggling around while she removes their wings. Completely uncaring of the lives of her men, the Sorceress transforms her own minions into freakish monsters to fight Spyro, and ultimately, due to her annoyance of Spyro's interference, creates a "monster to end all monsters" to wipe out every dragon. A genocidal tyrant who only cares about herself, the Sorceress stands out as the darkest and purest villain in the original Spyro trilogy.

The current make it seems like she's after all their wings even though it's just the baby dragons and she only decides to go genocidal because she's annoyed with Spyro's interference, that amount of Disproportionate Retribution seems notable to write up.

After Red's defeat, the Sorcerer creates three Shadow Amplifier Machines to pull everyone, including children, to the Shadow Realm so he can drain them of their magic, which involves torturing and leaving them to die there. When Bianca tries to stop him, the Sorcerer easily defeats her and orders Red to use her as bait for Spyro so he can kill him — also using Red as a scapegoat as the one responsible for his actions. When Spyro finally confronts the Sorcerer, he offers to make Spyro his apprentice, only for him to reject him anyways, deeming him too small and weak, before attempting to kill him for interfering his plans — with his final plan to drag everyone back into the Shadow Realm to drain them of their magic. A cruel, dark being who believes himself to be superior to the other dragons, the Sorcerer serves as one of Spyro's darkest foes.

The sorcerer never actually kills anyone in the Shadow Realm (although there's enough implications of what will happen to everyone after their magic is drained.)

Unlike Gaul's one listed, Malefor actually corrupts Cynder during his Breaking Speech and has her attack Spyro while he's casually talking about the end of the world.

Later in the game, Gaul commits an attack on the Skavenger's ship, leaving it to burn with its inhabitants inside to kidnap Cynder, mocking her impending demise at Malefor's hand. Before the final battle, Gaul drains Spyro of his magic for an easier kill. Despite having a deep hatred for dragons, Gaul committed many atrocities under Malefor's command purely to obtain more power.

Just watched a ton of The Flight Attendant (including all of Feliks' episodes). Feliks definitely counts, haven't got to Dot Karlson yet but will. As for the original writeup:

  • Feliks, who was said to have killed several cats in his childhood, is an assassin working for Lionfish. Having killed countless people on their behalf, women and children included, Felix would murder Alex Sokolov, before stalking his one-night stand, Cassandra "Cassie" Bowden, back to New York, entering her life as Buckley Ware and killing off several more people Cassie comes into contact with, such as a woman whom Feliks throws off a building, an FBI agent whose throat Feliks slashes, and nearly killing Max by running him over with a car. Feliks would then attempt to kill Miranda and Cassie before tracking the latter down in Rome to strangle her there, and would manipulate a woman to kill Cassie for him while he's still in prison.

Most of its fine, but I just reordered some stuff and added in the part where he stabs both Miranda and Enrico:

  • Feliks is an assassin working for Lionfish, who gutted and hung several cats in his childhood, horrifying everyone at his boys home. Having killed countless people on Lionfish's behalf, women and children included, Felix would murder Alex Sokolov, before stalking his one-night stand, Cassandra "Cassie" Bowden, back to New York, entering her life as Buckley Ware and killing off several more people Cassie comes into contact with, such as a woman whom Feliks throws off a building, an FBI agent whose throat Feliks slashes, and nearly killing Max by running him over with a car. I dig the Feliks rewrite!

Btw, a recent Star Wars comic reveals that as a boy, Tarkin and his little brother Gideon went on a hunt; when Gideon fell into a ravine and was hurt, Tarkin deliberately abandoned him there to be eaten alive by the local wildlife even as Gideon cried for his brother's help, Tarkin later brushing it off to his father as an "accident" while hiding a cruel smirk. Do we think that warrants at least a small mention in his entry? I think it's a pretty nasty reveal, even for Tarkin.

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.

[tup] to Feliks.

[up] Yeah I'd say that should be included. Even for everything else he's done, to do it as a child is pretty nasty.

  • Mother Russia Bleeds: The Premier of the Soviet Union is the linchpin of Russia's corruption. Funding a laboratory where Nekro is tested on many subjects, including animals, the Premier orders the abduction of numerous people, including the player character(s), from a Romani camp to serve as lab rats for the odious drug he allows to spread through the country, which results in an unhealthy and potentially lethal addiction to the substance. As the citizenry starts to revolt against his regime, the Premier sends his army to violently crush their protests, instructing troops to march on the capital and massacre all dissenters on such a scale that it is referred to as "genocide". When confronted, the Premier tries to pin blame on the Bratva he facilitated, while showing a cavalier lack of remorse toward the damage done to his people, merely using the conversation to buy time so his security team can kill the player(s) before trying to escape any responsibility or consequence for his venality.
  • my eyes deceive (link): The protagonist's "Papa" turns out to be the true monster of the story. Keeping the protagonist sheltered her entire life, Papa routinely drugged and raped her through the years, lying to her about monsters outside to keep her in the bunker. Edge also collects body parts from his slaves and bodyguards who he thinks might betray him, displaying them as twisted trophies for all to see.
  • Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future: The Mekon, the tyrannical ruler of the Treens from the north of Venus, aims to conquer the universe. Under the Mekon's rule, the Treens wage war on the peaceful Therons, with Treen children experimented on to create the perfect soldiers, one of whom is his bodyguard Sondar. When a human mission on Venus is intercepted by his forces, the Mekon plots to use technology from their ship to destroy the Therons and invade Earth. When Dan Dare punches him, the Mekon attempts to painfully execute him, as well as Sondar for his slow reaction. The Mekon then tries to enslave both the Therons and Earth: Methods include include using an ancient superweapon; trying to starve the Therons; and weaponizing a disease, almost destroying the afflicted village in the process. When the Mekon's campaign to Jupiter ends with him destroying a peaceful colony and being pursued by more powerful enemies, he manipulates his way into Space Fleet Command and tries to launch nuclear warheads against Jupiter. After his mining of the north of Venus leaves it uninhabitable, the Mekon joins forces with the treacherous Earth senator to fake his death and frame Dan for a war crime so Earth will lower its defences, allowing his fleet to attack Earth—reducing entire cities to rubble. When forced to call off the invasion, the Mekon sends a satellite crashing into Earth, gloating that the entire planet would be destroyed.
  • "Fire": Cecil L'Ively is a deeply sadistic Serial Killer who has the power to ignite things using his mind. Using these powers, Cecil targets various wealthy women by sending them love letters and stalking them. He then burns them alive and targets the rest of their family. After failing to murder Sir Malcolm Marsden, Cecil follows him and his family to the States, posing as a caretaker named Bob who he actually murdered sometime before. Meanwhile, Cecil poisons and murders the family chauffeur with a flame accelerant before going to a crowded bar and burning the place to the ground while watching the fire with a smile on his face. Cecil then drives the Marsden family to a party in Boston, in which he sets ablaze the building's 14th floor to stage a rescue of the children as a publicity stunt. Later that evening, Cecil attempts to finally burn and kill the entire Marsden family and agents Mulder, Scully, and Greene, including locking the children in a separate room to burn to death.

Cut Tsumugi, Felix rewrites, and Tarkin expansions.

Mr-ex777:The three villains, Otto, Clank and Doctor Nefarious, are in their own universes. Nefarious is from the reboot, while the games Otto and Clank are from are non-canon. And the villains in the canons have different scales of their catastrophic plans. Emperor Nefarious is trying to destroy the entire universe, Master Loki is trying to tear apart the entire universe, Drake and Tachyon are destroying planets and Tachyon is also committing genocide, Courtney helps with a very large-scale genocide, and Vox forces them to fight to the death and tries to destroy their own station. They all have their own crimes too, so all of them are okay.

Obligatory request for a level-headed discussion you can choose to ignore since I'm not gonna watch how it plays out lol but after thinking and discussing I've got a cut to suggest.

From Zeta Gundam:

  • Yazan Gable is a warmonger who goes so far to admit that he joined the Titans' military so he could legally kill members of the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG). He has no interest in the rules of warfare, murders solely because he is good at it, and gladly participates in the Grenada Colony Drop, knowing it would have killed thousands of civilians and seeing it as an opportunity to shoot down anyone who tries to defend Grenada. When a superior officer tries to stop a pointless battle, Yazan takes this as a hindrance to his bloodlust and arranges for the officer to die at the hands of an AEUG pilot. When Paptimus Scirocco betrays the Titan leadership, Yazan does so as well, out of his belief in fighting for the strongest military power. In the finale, Yazan leaves his mark on the show's tragic take on war when he goes on a savage killing spree, leaving numerous major heroic characters dead and even murdering some of his own allies. With a series of equally monstrous villains in the franchise influenced by him, Yazan is a blight upon his world, more of a feral predator than a man.

He's a meme, he's a template for future monsters and bad translations pump him up to be even worse but the fact of the matter is Yazan is largely a Sociopathic Soldier concerned with being a dick on the battlefield. I'm not going to act like he should be a one-to-one to Bask since they're different types of villains but the latter's war crimes and use of gas on colonies is important because largely Yazan just talks tough and fucks up enemy fighters.

The guy certainly inspired future monsters but he's still in the UC and the heinous standard needs to be kept in mind. The proceeding series—which literally starts right after Zeta ends, introduces an expy in Rakan who's far worse attacking civilians than Yazan ever was, personally racking up a huge bodycount of innocents and making a point of destroying means to escape. By contrast Yazan "takes part" in the Grenada attack but he's still just another fighter in it... he didn't plan it out, we're not giving him points like he directed the whole thing. To me he's just outdone by the next even if he's supposed to inspire the "low level bastard" for the franchise, the series are too close in release for me to try and say he's some kind of Ur-Example for this archetype. I really can't justify keeping him.

I'm personally a weak "Keep" on Yazan. Ignoring his status as the Fountain of Expies for every future Sociopathic Soldier that the franchise had to offer, Zeta pretty much establishes him as one of, if not the most significant henchman in service of the Titans, with his Ace Pilot skills providing them near and certain victories many times over the course of the show. That being said, I'm glad we are finally discussing him! [awesome]

I'll just leave it at that's something I'd be more inclined to take towards his rap sheet if he was a mass murderer of noncombatants. As is, Yazan is just quite sadistic while taking down enemy fighters. Even his "full of women and children" line referring to the AEUG is more dickish than anything. He will fire upon civilians but Grenada is his one real standout act and I can't see his status as an Ace Pilot for the Titans as indicating more than he's an effective fighter, not that he goes off the rails to kill innocents like I expect for a CM in the UC.

Cut Yazan. And since we're talking about Zeta, why was Paptimus Scirocco never a CM?
