The Goodman Family

     Mr. Pickles

The title character. A deceptively normal looking pooch, with demonic powers and a high body count.

  • A Taste of Defeat: "The Tree of Flesh" ends with Grandpa beheading Mr. Pickles. While the next incarnation is immediately born after his death, she is too young and powerless to do any real threat at least for a few years.
  • Affably Evil:
    • Mr. Pickles does treat some of his prisoners well. There's even a tavern where prisoners are sold their drink of choice in human skulls.
    • When played in reverse, the things he says when he uses his Compelling Voice are either this or Faux Affably Evil.
  • Badass Adorable: He’s an adorable dog who can take down huge armies and deranged psychopaths effortlessly.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: As revealed in Season 3 Finale, one of the prime reasons why Mr. Pickles has never physically hurt or ever attempted to kill Grandpa despite always trying to reveal his true nature to everyone, is because he has never stooped to actually trying to kill him, which is why he always spares him.
    • In fact, any character that is usually nice to him (or anyone else for that matter), is usually spared from his killings.
  • Berserk Button: If someone so much as shoots Tommy a dirty look, Mr. Pickles will bring their existence to a quick and violent end. Even if they're a loyal servant.
    • In “Bullies”, the two boys who usually bullies Tommy, kept pushing this button to the point that Mr. Pickles was about brutally murdered them with a scythe!
  • Big Good: For a loose interpretation of this trope, anyway.
  • Born-Again Immortality: Heavily implied to be the nature of the curse that created Mr. Pickles, which spawned the original evil dog after the death of a dog. And Mr. Pickles' successor is similarly born immediately after he dies.
  • Butt-Monkey: Such is his loyalty to Tommy that he'll tolerate Tommy having a particularly bratty episode and let himself become one of these if that's how Tommy feels like treating him.
  • Compelling Voice: When Mr. Pickles does his strange talk-growling thing, any animals in earshot tend to obey him. As detailed in Easter Egg, his talking can be decoded into specific threats or demands.
  • Decoy Protagonist: An odd variant. After being killed by Grandpa at the end of the third season, the fourth has Sheriff become the current protagonist.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Most of the time he has sex with strippers or molests Beverly, but had sex with a male bear in the pilot and keeps a man in a BDSM suit. Though it turns out said man is an elderly woman...
  • Disproportionate Retribution: If someone as so much as push Tommy.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite unmercifully slaughtering and kidnapping innocent humans, Mr. Pickles genuinely loves Tommy (and to a lesser extent, the rest of the family) and is very protective of him.
    • Seems to have an extremely warped, zig-zaggged, and downplayed one with Grandpa. While he absolutely loves traumatizing him and making him look crazy in front of everyone, he's never stooped to actually physically harming him as well as wanting him to permanently end up in an Asylum as shown in the Season 2 Premiere. And in the Season 3 Finale, where Mr. Pickles has to kill Grandpa, he briefly tears up as he's about to shoot him.
    • He genuinely tears up when he launches Agnes into space.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Mr. Pickles is everything from a perverted, satanic dog to a heartless, merciless killer, doing most of it For the Evulz. However, he will not tolerate pedophiles, which makes sense in that he has a child as his owner whom he clearly adores.
  • Extreme Omnivore: The only thing Pickles draws the line at are kids but, mostly, if it's a man, woman, another animal, or whatever (with emphasis on whatever), it's fair game. Weirdly (or maybe not), he does have some sort of attraction to Tommy's mom, as he has statue that looks and makes prisoners in his lair dress up like her.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Mr. Pickles sat down and accepted his fate when Grandpa kills him. Though, this might be because he knew he wasn't going to stay dead.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: The whole premise of the show. Quite literally too, since Mr. Pickles owns tools in his lair used for Satanic worship.
  • For the Evulz: Unless they press his Berserk Button, he tortures and kills people for presumably his own amusement.
  • Glass Cannon: It is made clear that despite how lethal and powerful Mr. Pickles is he is still, relatively speaking, a normal dog.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Inverted. On his best day Mr. Pickles is very morally gray and he’s definitely not someone anyone, human or otherwise, would want to cross.
  • Hell Hound: As a dog with demonic powers who worships Satan, he qualifies.
  • Heroic Dog: Played with. While he does take out humans who are evil, he sometimes kills, rapes and kidnaps For the Evulz.
  • Horrifying Hero: He’s a Heroic Dog who also happens to be a demonic Hell Hound who takes Body Horror and Cold-Blooded Torture to high levels.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Is finally killed by Grandpa in the Season Three finale, and while he is heavily implied to have been resurrected through Mrs. Pickles, "she" is left in a far more ineffectual state, unable to do much more above annoy Grandpa.
  • Karmic Trickster: An extreme example. He's almost always ready to punish any Jerkass/Ax-Crazy character, in the most horrifyingly cruel way possible.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Compared to most of the people he kills, at least.
  • Light Is Not Good: The "sunrise" trailer, where he appears as a demonic sun. His backstory also reveals that whatever turned into what he is now is divine providence.
  • Logical Weakness: He can sense danger coming from up to 666 yards away, making him vulnerable to sniper rifles.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is Mr. Pickles because he loves pickles.
  • Off with His Head!: How Grandpa finally kills him.
  • Right-Hand Attack Dog: Of Tommy's, although the owner isn't that bad.
  • Suddenly Voiced: The finale reveals he could talk all along, through a speaker inserted in his mouth.
  • Super-Strength: Best shown when he stops two runaway trains stacked on top of each other, when the car he was using breaks, he simply switches to trying to stop them bare handed, and succeeds.
  • The Unreveal: We never find out why he is loyal to Tommy, though we get a glimpse at his backstory.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: RELATIVELY SPEAKING, of course. Later seasons has his Ax-Crazy tendencies toned down severely, usually only killing people who honestly deserve their Cruel and Unusual Death and in general, the body counts for later episodes are lower than most of Season One's.
  • Troll: Mr.Pickles loves messing with Tommy's grandpa.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tommy gives Mr. Pickles a pickle when "he's a good boy", hence his name.
  • Villain Protagonist
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Mr Pickles's evil is completely hidden from all of Old Town, save for Grandpa. Sheriff even views him trustworthy enough to take him with him to catch criminals.
  • Was Once a Man: He claims that he was once a dog about to be sacrificed ritualistically in an old civilization. Then a divine beam of light shone on him and something happened...
    • Explained in full in the Season 4 premiere: the dog in question belonged to a witch who placed a curse on the civilization in retaliation; when the dog died, the original Evil Dog was born from its corpse, with its powers it became the new ruler of the civilization, and Mr. Pickles is the descendant of that dog.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Despite all of the bloodlust Mr. Pickles is an ordinary dog and is terrified of the vacuum cleaner (something Tommy's grandpa takes great delight in exploiting). That is until it was used to suck his crotch.
  • Would Hurt a Child: One of the ways Mr. Pickles is Lighter and Softer in the series compared to the pilot. In the pilot he brutally murders a child just for being mean to Tommy, while in the series he gets upset, but doesn't usually act when Tommy is bullied by kids. The closest he gets is in "Bullies" where the continual aggressive bullying of Tommy pushes Mr. Pickles to attempt to decapitate the titular bullies with a scythe, but he's interrupted before he can. Afterwards he simply settles on punishing their parents instead.

     Tommy Goodman
Mr. Pickles owner. An extremely thick-headed young boy in leg braces.
  • Book Dumb: Implied to have never gone to school until recently. It becomes more justified when it turns out that he is only 6.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: He can have his moments, and it's often Mr. Pickles that suffers as a result.
  • Cheerful Child: Is usually seen extremely happy.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Tommy is often depicted as the secondary main character right after Mr. Pickles, but when the show tends to get more plot-heavy, he goes Out of Focus with Grandpa usually taking the lead.
  • Free-Range Children: Tommy is often exploring Oldtown with only Mr. Pickles for supervision.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: In "Ganley Goodman", he beats up his dad, thinking that he was trying to steal his girlfriend and eventually threatens to beat him up again later if he can't go on a date with Suzy. During the credits, he ruins his date.
  • Morality Pet: To Mr. Pickles.
  • Nice Guy: Tommy is a legitimately sweet and helpful kid, if a stupid one (although that may or may not be justified by being very young.)
  • Only Sane Man: If the episode happens to center around Tommy's School, he's almost always in this role.
  • Younger Than They Look: Tommy looks to be close to 10 to his preteens. In "Vegans" its revealed he is only 6.

     Grandpa Henry Gobbleblobber
Tommy's Grandpa, and Mr. Pickles favorite victim.
  • Action Survivor: The sheer fact that he has survived many of Mr. Pickles' pranks/torturings, entered Mr. Pickles' Lair multiple times, unarmed, and managed to actually give him a run for his money in "Season 3 Finale", and hasn't been seriously injured or killed in any of these situations, definitely makes him one.
  • Berserk Button: Grandpa also has one combined with Let's Get Dangerous! and Took a Level in Badass, He doesn't take it very well when he discovered Mr. Pickles took the body of his wife right before the Twist Ending, right to the point of actually threatening Mr. Pickles with a handgun.
  • Butt-Monkey: Grandpa lives to have misfortune befall him.
  • Cassandra Truth/The Cassandra: The only one who's aware Mr. Pickles is evil, but either everyone just brushes it off as him being crazy or Mr. Pickles sets it up so he looks crazy.
  • Character Development: In Season One, Grandpa was the absolute Butt-Monkey of the show and was terrified by all of Mr. Pickles' doings. By the end of Season 3 however, The combination of finding out that his dead wife Agnes was actually one of Mr. Pickles' pets and him getting used to all of his antics has actually made Grandpa fear Mr. Pickles a lot less than before and is now less cowardly in general. Most notably when he fearlessly punches Mr. Pickles in the face with no regrets and manages to escape the police when Mr. Pickles' frames him for murder.
  • The Chew Toy: Grandpa is clearly this for Mr. Pickles. In fact Mr. Pickles became depressed and did everything he could to get Grandpa out of the insane asylum after being told he couldn't play with him anymore.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Most notably in Season 3, where he gets dangerously close to actually killing Mr. Pickles.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: In "The Lair" when he genuinely believes that Mr. Pickles' is about to kill him he yells out to him:
Grandpa: This is what you wanted? To watch me die!? I hope you burn in hell, you dumb dog!!
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Almost literally. He actually punches Mr. Pickles so hard that a walkie talkie that was shoved deep inside his stomach was forcibly vomited out!
  • Hero Antagonist: Serves as this for Mr. Pickles. Especially in Season 3 finale.
  • Lovable Coward: Is generally a nice fellow and is always scared of Mr. Pickles.
  • Only Sane Man: The only one who knows of Mr. Pickles' true nature.
  • Pet the Dog: The last thing he says to Mr. Pickles before he kills him?
Grandpa: Rest easy boy, the show's over.
[Grandpa proceeds to chop off Mr. Pickles' head]
  • Seen It All: By "The Tree of Flesh", very little shocks him anymore.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Season 3 Finale. He shows to Mr. Pickles just how long he's been practicing to stop him, being able to outsmart him several times as well as showing he's quite capable in combat. Hell, even he's aware that no one will ever believe him and outright attempts to kill Mr. Pickles to stop him once and for all.
    • Even before that, Grandpa has shown to becoming slightly desensitized by Mr. Pickles' antics. Like in "S.H.O.E.S." where he doesn't react much to the Soldier being dragged inside Mr. Pickles' lair and in "Brain Download" where he reacts pretty apathetically to Agnes claiming that she's going to torment him for the rest of his life, which actually shocks her for a brief moment.
Agnes: They'll never believe you Henry! Mr. Pickles showed me the way of Pavanatra Sluganotharat, I am forever Steve! And now that I'm home, I'm gonna help Mr. Pickles make your life hell! Hahahahaha! *woof*
Grandpa: Ugh, who cares? You want to make me look crazy? I'm used to it.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: A zig-zagged and downplayed example. In "The Tree of Flesh," Grandpa finally murders Mr. Pickles and is absolved of the crimes he was framed for. However, having swapped brains with a female dog, Grandpa unfortunately gives birth to Mr. Pickles' daughter. Who seems to be just like her father. Grandpa reacts with mild annoyance and he does at least have some time of peace as she is too harmless to be a threat.

     Stanley Goodman
Tommy's cubicle monkey father.

  • Ascended Extra: In season four, he becomes the junior deputy and much more prominent character.
  • Hidden Depths: He has interest in alien discovery.
  • Out of Focus: In Season One he has a big prominence among many episodes but later in Seasons Two and Three he's been mostly relegated to featuring roles.
  • Only Sane Employee: From what we've seen of his workplace, he is the only one actually doing any work.
  • Standard '50s Father: Only in modern times, Stanley tries to invoke a time when being a dad was simpler
  • Workaholic: Not just stuck in a dead end job as a telemarketer, he's a slave to it thanks to his boss.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Mr. Goodman in the second Season seems to now only care about getting food and completely ignores his wife when she isn't making any.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In season three, much of his negative traits were toned down, making him more like his original self. By season four he's lost all his apathetic Jerkass traits and become the Only Sane Man of Old Town.

     Beverly Goodman
Tommy's mom, and the object of Mr. Pickles lust.
  • Daddy's Girl: Beverly loves her father and has a better relationship with him than she did with her mother, even if she gets exasperated by his claims that Mr. Pickles is evil.

     Mrs. Pickles
Mr. Pickles' daughter, born in the season 4 premiere almost immediately following Mr. Pickles' death.
  • Out of Focus: Her father was the main character, but she is hardly seen at all now that Sheriff is the main character of season 4.
  • Poke the Poodle: Being just a puppy, she can't quite match the brutal feats of her father. The worst she's seen doing is annoying Grandpa by gnawing harmlessly on his head.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Looks much like her father, but with eyelashes. Given that all the evil dogs look similar, she may straight up be a reincarnation of Mr. Pickles.

People of Old Town

     The Sheriff
The boneheaded town sheriff.
     Linda
An insane and homeless scrounger.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: Linda clearly has some severe undiagnosed mental problems. And from the scar on her forehead brain damage as well.
  • Body Horror: Her breasts literally hang down to her knees, her stomach is distended, generally ugly...
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Gorzoth".
  • The Determinator: The photos in her house show Linda will do just about anything to help someone.
  • My Greatest Failure: Linda's motivation to help everyone stems from an incident when she didn't help a man tie his shoes. He tripped and it led to him falling into a shark tank and getting eaten.
  • Nice Girl: As revealed in "Gorzoth" she's spent most of her life helping people.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Turns out she's completely loaded, but gives literally every cent to the homeless.
     Mr. Bo Jenkins
The town Casanova.
  • The Alcoholic: Quickly resorted to drinking while in jail after attempting to warn the sheriff of Lisa Gabagoolie's plan. Also seemed to enjoy day drinking outside of the local bar and encouraged Stanley to follow suit.
  • The Casanova
  • Only Sane Man: Was the only person to notice Lisa Gabagoolie was only pretending to be interested in the Sheriff in order to free her mob boss father from jail.
  • Stout Strength: Looks rotund, but is actually quite built.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him
  • We Hardly Knew Ye
     Stanley's Boss
Stanley's dick boss.
  • Amazon Chaser: Possibly. His wife is a gargantuan body-builder, but he doesn't seem that into her.
  • Facial Horror: His lower jaw is covered with large quantities of unsettling acne or boils.
  • Karma Houdini: One of the very few characters in the whole show to escape karma's grasp time and time again.
  • Mean Boss: Mr. Goodman's boss who regularly treats him like garbage. This despite the fact Mr. Goodman seems to be the only employee that is doing any work.
     Floyd
Stanley's extremely obese colleague.
  • Big Eater: Good lord is he ever...
  • Boomerang Bigot: He's actually extremely disgusted by fat people, oblivious to is own morbid weight gain, and vowed to kill himself if he ever got fat. He completely changes his mind when his flab saves him life from a stray bullet.
  • Extreme Omnivore: He's been seen eating bullets and gorging on hats.
  • Fat Bastard: Subverted. He's actually one of the nicest people in town but he can't really be considered Big Fun due to being so physically grotesque.
  • Kevlard: He's so fat he's bulletproof.
  • Nice Guy: A morbidly obese doofus, but a nice guy.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Floyd is incredibly well off from his winnings in eating contests, he explains to Stanley when the family visits his mansion that he doesn't even have to work at the telemarketing job, he just does it for fun.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Floyd has quite the trophy wife when he himself is so gross in appearance.
     Steve/Agnes Gobbleblobber
Mr. Pickles top servant. A man in a gimp suit who communicates by barking.
  • Abusive Parents: Was said to have constantly belittled Beverly growing up causing her to grow up with low self esteem.
  • Asshole Victim: Ends up being killed two times, but was far from a sympathetic character.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Was played to be a major threat to Mr. Pickles, but got little screen time after being killed off...twice.
  • Broken Pedestal: Grandpa was still not over her "death" even though it happen years before but when he found out she was serving Mr Pickles he became pretty callous toward her well being.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Insults Tommy right in front of Mr. Pickles of all people. It goes about as well as you’d expect.
  • Dark Is Evil: Wears a black gimp suit and is Mr Pickles loyal servant as well as an abusive old woman.
     Others

Bigfoot/Vito Pizzarelli

A former mobster, who now exists as Bigfoot in a bizarre witness protection program.
  • Cultured Badass: Has knowledge of Italian cuisine and was a feared mafia hitman, a trait he puts to good use.
  • Gentle Giant: He is Bigfoot and a former mafia hitman, but he is a good person nonetheless.
  • Neighborhood-Friendly Gangsters: He left a life of crime, but is an all around decent person compared to the gang who went to find him.
