Not Tropeworthy: Fashion Model

To-do list:

Original post:

As part of a project of mine, where I tackle some of the chairs-y Occupation Tropes, I decided to start with Fashion Model.

Fashion Model doesn't have any significance other than classifying a character as a model, which makes it not tropeworthy.

The wick check:

    open/close all folders
    Just "X is/was/wants to be a model" (37/60)
  1. Belly Buttonless: Czech Fashion Model Karolína Kurková (somewhat) famously has no navel. She's never disclosed exactly why, but her lack of a natural belly-button has given rise to accusations of over-airbrushing when she appears in photo spreads. Ironically, this has caused some photo editors to Photoshop one onto her photos, in order to avoid accusations of over photo-editing!
  2. Characters.A Passion For Revenge: (Irina), In The Fashionista: She's very into fashion and modeling, and her dream is to become a Fashion Model.
  3. Girliness Upgrade: Keira Knightley's early roles were the likes of Bend It Like Beckham, The Hole, King Arthur (2004), The Jacket and Pirates of the Caribbean - where she had a slightly tomboyish image (she described herself as "a real scruff"). But she soon got typecast as the Spirited Young Lady in period pieces and became a Fashion Model as well. Pride & Prejudice (2005)'s director in fact nearly didn't cast her because he thought she'd be too glamorous to play a Tomboy like Lizzy Bennet.
  4. In Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, as in the tabletop game, the Nosferatu sometimes inflict their Looks Like Orlok variety of undeath on vain beauties to take them down a notch. One Nosferatu, Imalia, is a former top supermodel... who will pay handsomely to have her Unknown Rival successor's life ruined, suggesting that the lesson in humility didn't stick. Justified, in that she's a fledgling, a newly turned vampire.
  5. Proud Beauty: Gwen Stacy actually started out this way in Spider-Man, as she got angry at Peter Parker for daring not to be attracted to her, and reflected that "I've never met a boy like him! He didn't even give me a glance!" Fortunately, she got better. Mary Jane Watson and Black Cat play this role more straight due to the former being a Fashion Model/Fanservice Model and the latter being a Sexy Cat Person/Classy Cat-Burglar with a form fitting Spy Catsuit.
  6. Characters.ANNO Mutationem: (Nakamura), She had a stint of modeling gigs before ultimately settling as the manager for the Sicilian Jar.
  7. Characters.A Silent Voice: (Miyoko), She does modeling for a club at school. As of Chapter 59, she seems to have a burgeoning career as a runway model.
  8. Characters.Academy Of Merlin Students: (Chanel ), For the Parcaes. Keeps a strict diet because of it. Not enough useful context
  9. Characters.Ad Mortem: Luxor's entry under the Capitol Tributes' folder, And a big one in the Capitol, at that!
  10. Characters.American Beauty: (Angela), what she aspires to be, because "there's nothing worse than being ordinary".
  11. Characters.Chihayafuru: (Chitose), She works as a model and is quite popular.
  12. Characters.Crisis Equestria: (Insipid), Becomes one of these with Rarity's help, and is quite successful at it in fact. Her physical resemblence to Rarity plays a big role in that.
  13. Characters.Dancougar Nova: (Aoi), She models as a side gig.
  14. Characters.Danganronpa Junko Enoshima: She can be seen modeling her own designs in magazines.
  15. Characters.Dr Crafty Sasha: In "The Little Purple House," Crystelle reveals that she and Sasha once dabbled in modeling careers at different times. It was through this brief venture that Sasha discovered her love for filmmaking, which she became very successful in.
Crystelle: Sasha has indeed also been in the modeling front, being that exotic, blue-skinned beauty, after all. But she found it more comfortable behind the camera instead. Some people have all the luck, apparently...
  16. Characters.Earth Twenty Seven Argus And Task Force X: (Catherine), She became a highly renowned fashion model just for fun.
  17. Characters.Fairy Tail Sirius Team: (Mirajane), She's a famous pinup model for Weekly Sorcerer Magazine.
  18. Characters.Family Guy The Griffin Family: (Lois), She wanted to be one, and got a job in one episode.
  19. Characters.Friendship Is Magic Fluttershy: She reluctantly worked as one in an episode because she thought it would make Rarity happy.
  20. Characters.Heart Catch Pretty Cure Kibogahana: (Momoka), An aspiring model who's something of a celebrity in her hometown.
  21. Characters.Hollywood Heights: Before even dating Eddie, she has had a very successful modeling career. (She's listed as Beauty Is Bad + being selfish so there's more to her just being a model but as-written it's a ZCE)
  22. Characters.Homestar Runner Main Characters: (Strong Bad), He puts up pictures to see if he got hired, and was given a job as the model for the "Husky Head" catalog.
  23. Characters.Kiss Him Not Me: (Nozomu), By the finale, he's become a major fashion model—for women's clothing. Princess Usamin lives on.
  24. Characters.Love Nikki Dress Up Queen: Under Recurring Opponents, (Sofia) Her day work. She's very, very good at it.
  25. Characters.Magia Record Dark Magical Girls: (Ria), She works as a model, much like Yachiyo.
  26. Characters.Marvel Comics Psylocke: She used to be a supermodel before becoming a superheroine. She even posed nude (albeit tastefully, with Toplessness from the Back and a Modesty Bedsheet) for Colossus so he could draw her portrait.
  27. Characters.Mieruko Chan: (Michiru), She's a popular model of the Chaos Teen magazine.
  28. Characters.Miraculous Ladybug Marinette Dupain Cheng: In Girly Bruiser: Marinette is a hyperfeminine teenage girl who loves pink is cutesy, bubbly, and romantic, designs and sews her own clothes from scratch (and even models them on occasion), a talented Sweet Baker, and is affectionate with her friends and family, not to mention absolutely smitten with Adrien Agreste (as well as Luka Couffaine for some time). She's also a strong fighter as the superhero Ladybug, and is the protector of Paris, who tends to pick up the slack of her male and more conventionally masculine partner Cat Noir often, even winning in fights against him when he is Brainwashed and Crazy.
  29. My Hero Academia - Other Heroes: (Uwabami), Her day job. It actually takes up a lot of her time, much to Yaoyorozu and Kendo's exasperation. (This is a side job alongside her heroism job — don't know if this is significant enough tho)
  30. Characters.Never Have I Ever: (Kamala), In So Beautiful, It's a Curse Kamala laments that she's too curvaceous to be a Fashion Model, when mistaken by a besotted biker for one.
  31. Characters. One Piece Nami: She gets roped into modeling during the Heroines spinoff novel.
  32. Characters.Oshi No Ko: (Yuki), Her main occupation, though she also has a knack for acting.
  33. Characters.Pokemon Adventures Galar: Nessa's entry under Travel Companions Doubles as this along with being Hulbury's Gym Leader.
  34. Characters.Princess Connect Re Dive: (Suzuna's entry under Twilight Caravan) Her profession.
  35. Characters.Private Actress: Shuuto is an incredibly handsome and charismatic male model.
  36. Characters.Rise Of Anatis Miraculous Heroes: Adrien's entry Aspik folder He models for his father's fashion company.
  37. VideoGame.Barbie Super Model: Barbie's one in this game, as indicated by the title. So several outfits will be tried on.

Useful context (e.g. a certain depiction or specific situations) (9/60)
  1. D-Cup Distress: Gigi (who is a Fashion Model) in The Neon Demon states that she had a breast reduction among the rest of the cosmetic surgery she had to further her career. Somewhat Truth in Television in that clothes benefit smaller chest sizes in the fashion world. — Character has to modify her body/change herself to be accepted for a modeling job
  2. Characters.Cardcaptor Sakura: She worked as a successful model, whose beauty inspires both her husband and her own daughter. It's because of the fact that she was a model that Fujitaka still has so many pictures of her and is able to put up a new one each day. — Inspirational job
  3. Characters.Castle: (Kate) She used to be one for a very brief period of time, but thinks the world of high fashion is more corrupt than the world of criminals. — HF is corrupt
  4. Characters.Confession Executive Committee: (Sena), Despite being in high school, she also moonlights as a teen model for her job. Her success in-universe also landed her a role in a LIP×LIP music video. In addition to that, she also has a hand in designing clothes, as we can see when she designs one of Mona's stage outfits. — A minor working as a teen model
  5. Characters.Desperate Housewives Housewives: (Gabrielle), She was an archetypal example in the past, apparently, as a dim and superficial model. She occasionally goes back to it, but mostly to learn her lesson about how she's better off in Wisteria Lane. A superficial model
  6. Characters.Persona 5 Ann Takamaki: Her part-time job. It becomes an issue in her Confidant where a fellow model objects to Ann only doing it part-time. A minor working as a part-time model + becomes a problem to her
  7. Characters.Persona Rebirth Taiyoutono: (Isoroku), Isoroku moonlights as a part-time model, which makes her a minor celebrity of sorts. Minor working as a part-time model
  8. Characters. Please Dont Tell My Parents Im A Supervillain: (The Two Deadly Sins), They were child models for a line of clothing designed for non-standard body types. They still get recognized on occasion. They had to retire before they were teenagers, though, because they were warned that the work was going to start getting uncomfortably sexy very soon. They can start working again when they turn eighteen (no one will use a pre-legal model for that level of fanservice), but they decide they don't like the opportunities offered to sexy devils. Child labor + modeling viewed as a non child/minors-friendly job
  9. VisualNovel.Lucid 9: Misaki works as one, and it's a demanding enough job that the school is willing to let her leave class as long as she keeps her grades up. In one optional event, if Yama accepts a request from Misaki, Yama can make one of her modeling jobs much more successful by acting out a scene in which they're a couple. — Student has to juggle between school and modeling job

    Uncertain/Other/Misc. (6/60)
  1. Characters.Black Cat Marvel Comics: Impossible Hourglass Figure: Like Mary Jane Watson she has curved hips a very volumptuous figure as well as her signature buxom breasts. — Pothole
  2. Characters.Boku Girl: (Nanatarou), The final chapter shows that Yamada and Tamako eventually reached an understanding with him becoming a lingerie model so she can make him famous across the world. — This is Fanservice Model
  3. Characters.Death Proof: (Kim), In one of her earlier scenes, she's having Abernathy check if she has a picture in the latest issue of Allure. She does.
  4. Characters.Earth Twenty Seven Minutemen: (Silk), Pretty much the point of her hero career was this.
  5. Characters.Lelouch Of The Wings Of Rebellion The Black Knights: Discussed. Milly considers Lelouch would make much more money as one than by his gambling, but he dismisses the possibility because the last thing he needs is for his face to be posted everywhere.
  6. Characters.Marvel Comics Jean Grey: In an arc in the 60s Jean goes undercover as a swimsuit model. — This is Undercover Model

As we can see, this trope is a ZCE magnet due to its broad name and wide scope. So, I propose the following solutions:

I'd prefer disambiguating for being Chairs. I don't think that's enough tropes for an index and making it a supertrope wouldn't make it any less Chairs-y.

Whether to launch those other tropes is a separate issue that would be handled by TLP and not TRS. Tying TLP drafts to TRS threads often ends up slowing both parts of the site down, but the examples that would fit those proposed tropes can be sandboxed before being taken to TLP, possibly being Yarded if nobody's ready to sponsor them right away.

Edit: Tagged the page.

I'm leaning towards disambiguating too, or turning Fashion Model into a creator index, given that the real life section is listed under creators - if so, it'll have to be moved to Fashion Models, so that Fashion Model can be kept as a disambiguation page.

I suppose one option would be turning it into an index for both creators who are models and tropes related to fashion models. My previous objection to indexing was that there weren't many tropes, but if we'd be indexing creators as well, that changes that.

Eh, having one page for real-life models, and tropes pertaining to models in fiction, seems like it'd be kind of schizophrenic for an index. (Using that word to describe it isn't too offensive, is it?)

Perhaps a trope relating to the idea that everyday is a fashion show to a certain character like they are a supermodel 24/7.

This deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball.

[up][up][up][up] If we turn it into an index, there shouldn't be any fictional models as examples, just tropes about modeling.

Turning the trope into an index won't solve the problem of it being not tropeworthy.

Synchronicity (4 Score & 7 Years Ago)
#18: Apr 4th 2023 at 8:06:04 AM

A consideration for indexing real models: do we consider modeling work by itself tropeworthy content, the way we do Actors or Photographers or Painters? If not, there's no point noting it on this site because all it does is say "a modeling agency thought this person was interesting-looking enough to pose a few times".

Some things for the TLP...

  • Modeling is Glamorous, where it's portrayed as this jetsetting high-flying career where you get to hang with celebrities and such. This is something skewered in Triangle of Sadness (the two mains are invited on cruises and eat at fancy restaurants and such but are always actually worrying about money because it doesn't pay the bills forever)
  • Modeling Is Skeevy, portraying it as inherently exploitative and grimy career filled with Male Gaze-y photographers
  • Teen Model, portraying it as a totally doable side hustle for a pretty minor (maybe wiggle room for something like...teen Only Fans or something)

(EDIT: I am for disambiguating btw)

Most if not all the models that have pages on FashionModel.Real Life double as actors and/or involved in other creative works. I don't we need a specific index for them and I don't think we trope model work.

Disambig and yarding sounds good to me in any case.

ETA: the more this goes on the more I feel an index for all tropes related to fashion and modeling would be fine.

Yeah, now we have Model Scam, Sleazy Photoshoot, The Fashionista, Action Fashionista, The Dandy, Sharp-Dressed Man (?), etc. and the aforementioned 10 tropes they'd be enough for an index. I have seen indexes with fewer tropes.

That is if we expand it to be about modeling and fashion.

(BTW, to anyone interested in making a draft, the Teen Model concept has 5 examples).

[up]Casting Couch would be another trope for that index: it and Model Scam are both basically Sexual Extortion via job offer, the main distinction being that with Casting Couch the job actually exists.

I'm leaning on throwing a [tup] in for yarding.

EDIT: I changed my mind, so I agree with turning it into an index as well as renaming it.

I'm in favor of disambiguating and Yarding. As I said, the proposed new tropes can be handled by TLP independently of this thread.

Changing my opinion to just Disambiguating and yarding.

As for model work, I think the creators' lives are not tropable, but designers and models deliberately invoking or referencing a trope on their dresses is. But I think it would be best not to create the page or yard it right now, given the great overlap with the acting indexes.

Crown Description:

Consensus was to turn Fashion Model into the index drafted in this post and rename it. What should its new name be?
