Misused: Love You And Everybody

To-do list:

    Original post
The OP was originally written by randomtroper89.
A while ago I tried to do a TRS for this trope despite not understanding how to do one. However coming back to the trope reveals the same problem.

Love You and Everybody is non-stock phrase way of saying "I love you and everyone", the "everyone" part being an attempt to backpedal from a declaration of love. The problem is that the trope is often a generic reference to loving everyone, often All-Loving Hero. The wick check will show that they're far more "loving everyone" examples then correct examples.

I think something like Platonic Love Backpedal would be a good rename.

Wick check

  • ZCE/Pothole 14/50 (28%)
  • Others 11/50 (22%)
  • Loves everyone in general 9/50 (18%)
  • Correct 7/50 (14%)
  • All Loving Hero 4/50 (8%)
  • Doesn't know if the character likes them because they are nice to everyone 3/50 (6%)
  • Wants all of the Harem 3/50 (6%)

7.Ah! My Goddess

  • Love You and Everybody: Comes part and parcel with being a first-class goddess. She is, however, willing to make an exception for Keiichi: she will always choose him over everyone and everything else, which she explicitly says in Volume 15:
Belldandy: "If I had to choose between saving the world and saving Keiichi... I would save Keiichi."

  • Naruto: This is the biggest reason why Naruto was unable to notice Hinata's feelings for him, in a Gender Inverted example. Naruto's depressing childhood instilled in him a lack of self-worth that he hid behind bravado and arrogance when he was younger. It didn't help that almost all of the girls in his class—including Sakura, the object of his one-sided shallow crush until Chapter 469—treated him horribly and turned their attention to Sasuke, which made Naruto think that all girls are only interested in guys like Sasuke. After Hinata confessed her love to him in the Invasion of Pain arc, Naruto was completely stunned, and even for a while afterwards, he thought she meant she loved him as a friend. It also prevented him from understanding his own feelings for her—and judging by the dialogue from the other characters in the Fourth Shinobi World War Arc and The Last: Naruto the Movie, it's heavily implied that Naruto has been in love with Hinata for a while. When he finally does understand in the movie, is when this trope is exemplified full force. This was confirmed with his Heroic Vow: he never thought someone as kind and beautiful as Hinata would genuinely love him for him. Seems backwards, as he misunderstand as opposed to be backpedaling

  • Love You and Everybody: Newland Archer spends the first half of the novel completely oblivious to Ellen's feelings for him because she's just as cordial with him as everyone else. In a non-romantic sense, New York high society takes umbrage with Ellen being equally polite to everyone she meets, rather than showing excessive reverence for approved members of society and cold disapproval or haughty indifference to people deemed unworthy of such kindness. '''First half fits the "Doesn't know they love them because they are nice to everyone" idea, latter half fits the "loves everyone in general" category.

  • Interestingly this happens in Sabrina the Teenage Witch too, except that it's gender flipped. Sabrina cooks up a temporary date out of man dough to take her to the dance when Harvey goes with Libby. He loves Sabrina, but he also loves everything and everyone. Libby ends up dumping Harvey for him as Harvey won't dance. Interestingly, in this situation the one who isn't the "Magical (Girl/Boy)friend" in this case is the one with the magical powers. The man dough guy qualifies by not being human, and by being totally into Sabrina.

6.Chaotic Good

  • My-HiME:
    • Mikoto Minagi fits this alignment most of the time, too. Though she's quite naive, having lived a sheltered life before going to school at Fuuka, she's quick to make friends and is fiercely protective of them... especially Mai. Her childlike nature also comes with a general distrust of authority, and an unfortunate susceptibility to mind control.

Don't you guys love Angel?" and Wesley, Fred, and Gunn all chime simultaneously "We love you, Angel!" Due to the skill of the actors involved, an absolute knee-slapper.
    • He's trying to work up to telling her he thinks he's developed romantic feelings for her and she interrupts him with "Angel, are you trying to tell me you love me? It's ok, I love you too". He's surprised she was able to just come right out with it, but she just wants to reassure him that she knows he cares about her, turns out that five minutes earlier everyone else was saying they loved each just in case they all die in the coming apocalypse.

He endeavors to learn more about it after finding that it may be the key to defeating the Nokkers of the Modern Era.

1.Relationship Sabotage

  • From the works of Jane Austen:
    • Pride and Prejudice:
      • Mr. Darcy doesn't believe that Jane Bennet holds any particular feelings for Mr. Bingley, not realizing that Jane is too shy and reserved to express her love openly in a way that would stand out from how nice she already is to everyone. Because of this, and because he (not entirely inaccurately) sees Jane's mother and sisters as appalling Gold Diggers, Darcy prevents Bingley and Jane from meeting in London and encourages Bingley to break off his courtship of Jane.

2.Phantom Thief Jeanne

  • Love You and Everybody: Chiaki is very charming towards every young woman he meets, leading Maron to doubt his feelings. Little does she know he's already a Ladykiller in Love at this point.
Maron: "I see... Chiaki is kind to anybody, it's the same with any girl... Why did I think that I was the only person that was special?"

3.Headscratchers.Pride And Prejudice

Mr. Darcy
  • So Darcy's major reason for discouraging Bingley's courtship of Jane is a belief that Jane's affection is not sincere, due to Jane's inveterate shyness. Um, how is this Darcy's business? If he had reason to believe Jane was only chasing Charles for his money, that's reason to break them up. This is obviously not the case, so where does he get off?
    • He knew Bingley well enough to realize he was honestly falling in love with Jane, but he had reason to think Jane was just being... polite. He recognized in the letter to Lizzy that Jane had many personal virtues to recommend her, but being open about her affections was not one of them. Add to that the other "disadvantages" of the match: No connections, a "silly" family, (relative) poverty, and poor relations, and Darcy had a point in not wanting his friend to marry Jane when the principal selling point (Love) is in doubt of existing. Honestly, you're right, it wasnt his business except in as much as a concerned friend should warn of a potentially loveless marriage, which he did. It's a Jerkass move and Lizzy rightly What the Hell, Hero?'s him on it, but that's the point. It's part of his ungentlemanly pride that he had not realized was a defect and later sets out to correct. That he "OK's" the match to Bingley and owns up to hiding Jane's presence in London isn't just to get in good with Lizzy, but because he realized he had done wrong by his friend.
    • Meddling in others' lives for the better is an older-sibling instinct (as I sadly know from experience), and Bingley would have and should have come to the same conclusion about Jane (everyone besides the Bennets apparently did) if he wasn't so naive. In a way, Bingley's and Darcy's beliefs about Jane's feelings parallel Jane's and Elizabeth's chosen views of the world. That aside, like the above troper said, Darcy was concerned for his friend and didn't want to see him get his heart broken. If that doesn't suit you, there is the more interesting motivation that I half-not-seriously thought of when I first read the novel...

Wants all of the Harem 3/ 50 6%

1.Manga.Rosario Plus Vampire

  • Marry Them All: Fang-Fang Huang attempts to lure Tsukune into the Chinese Demon Mafia (no, seriously) by pointing out that this would make it a simple matter for him to marry his entire harem. With the exception of Moka, the girls make it clear that they like the idea... and Yukari tries to put him on a leash and force him to accept. And Kurumu, Ruby, and Mizore dress to fit in with the Chinese... Then Inner Moka reiterates Outer Moka's objection. Except with a great deal more violence.
    • There's also the end of the anime, where Tsukune, faced with the question of "who will you end up with", tries using this in conjunction with Love You and Everybody so as not to let the other girls down, especially because they busted their humps to help him before. It only earns him a kick in the face from Inner Moka.

2.Characters.Val X Love

  • Love You and Everybody: After a particularly embarrassing Val Love session with the triplets in chapter 33, Takuma blurts out that he loves them. "Them" being all nine sisters. Itsuyo, Mutsumi and Natsuki are simultaneously flustered by his bluntness, happy to hear that he likes them, and sad that he is basically confessing he still hasn't choosen one of them

3.Marry Them All

In Love Triangles and more complicated situations, selecting just one suitor can prove to be a toughie. After all, the main character usually finds him/herself in this predicament because he/she likes all of the love interests to a degree and doesn't want to break anyone's heart or make anyone leave. Even if he/she likes only one in particular, there's little guarantee that the rest will be willing to accept their choice, especially in long-running harem series. This often happens when the love polygon devolves into True Companions and infatuations become close friendships instead.

I think there's another point worth raising here: the trope is often used as a character trope, for someone who seems like an ideal lover, caring and supportive and so on, except they can't understand the concept of romantic love. This is often the case for Magical Girlfriends, where the implication is that they are made to be devoted to their mate, but also don't have any sex drive, or any cultural notion of marriage.

So it may be viable to launch this as a character trope, but it would have to be built from the ground up.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

[up]If there are any examples like that in the wick check, we can sandbox those examples and Yard the concept if nobody wants to take it to TLP right away, but since there aren't going to be any TLP drafts tied to this thread, all of that is a matter for TLP and/or the Salvage Yard to handle and not TRS.

I looked over the sandbox and I don't see any salvageable examples because it's mostly characters saying they love everybody, which is not a trope, so I cut it. Maybe the wicks are in better shape.

Trope Repair Shop: Love You and Everybody
5th Feb '23 10:03:52 PM

Crown Description:

Love You And Everybody is heavily misused, and merging with Bait And Switch Sentiment (possibly including sending the original definition to the Trope Idea Salvage Yard if it's determined to be distinct from that trope, due to the very small amount of correct examples for the existing trope resulting in starting from scratch on the Trope Launch Pad being suggested) has been suggested due to the trope being for when a bait-and-switch for what sounds like a Love Confession is actually a declaration of platonic love. What should be done with Love You And Everybody?
