Thanks Arvine.

Sting

  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • His WWE debut. During the main event of Survivor Series 2014, the Icon appears to give Team Cena their much-needed aid by knocking out both Triple H and the corrupt referee, Scott Armstrong, then placing the unconscious Dolph Ziggler on Seth Rollins.
    • On January 19th, 2015 episode of Raw, John Cena competes in a three-on-one handicap match against the Authority to get his teammates rehired. Just when the situation doesn't sit well for Cena, Sting suddenly appears on the titantron and calmly makes his way towards the ring. This distraction allows Cena to pin Seth Rollins and win the match.
    • Sting's AEW debut at Winter Is Coming 2020. After Team Taz attacks Cody Rhodes and Darby Allin following their match, Sting makes his entrance. Team Taz promptly retreats from the ring, evidently unwilling to confront Sting.
  • No-Sell: Sting will sometimes withstand strong attacks, including finishers, from his opponents and either stays standing or promptly gets back up.
  • Phrase Catcher: It's STIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!!!

WhatCouldHaveBeen.The Owl House:

  • On April 26, 2024, the series pilot for episode one would be leaked onto YouTube, revealing several major differences from the show. The biggest difference is that Amity has a slightly larger role, as not only does she appear as a "student" in the human realm who would meet Luz while there, but she is the reason why Luz ends up in the Boiling Isles, as she followed her to the isles to bring back her passport. Other differences include the absence of Camilla and the summer camp aspect, Eda seemingly being able to turn into an owl-beast at will, and Lillith being the principal of Hexside instead of Bump.

Queer Colors

I'm In Love With the Villainess:

  • First Installment Wins: The first three volumes, which are just focused on the relationship between Rae and Claire and the fantasy setting, are widely regarded to be the best of the series, with volume 4 and 5's Genre Shift and greater incorporation of science fiction elements being seen as divisive at best.

YMMV.Knuckles
  • Franchise Original Sin: The show's focus on Wade and his family over Knuckles has become the target of massive criticism from fans. However, the films were equally guilty of this, placing almost just as much focus on Tom and his family as it does on the Sonic characters (especially in the first film, where Tom was the co-protagonist). The difference is that the Sonic cast are still given a lot of focus in the films, with the second film putting a far greater focus on their adventure, with the human characters becoming Demoted to Extra, while in the show, Knuckles becomes increasingly sidelined compared to Wade and the other human characters — even becoming near absent in episode 4 — which fans were not pleased with.

One Piece: Monkey D. Luffy:

  • Achilles' Heel:

    • In the first half of the story, Luffy was not well-versed in the use of Haki. He relied solely on his brute strength to overpower his opponents. Many characters pointed out his lack of abilities and knowledge during the Paramount War. Luffy's inability to detect when his opponents were using Armament or Observation Haki resulted in a long string of defeats against stronger adversaries. However, he has since become stronger and more skilled, having learned to master the use of Haki during the Time Skip. This has enabled him to overcome these challenges and improve his abilities.

Pokémon the Series: XY — Main Cast

Serena

  • Characterization Marches On: Serena was distinctly more sassy and outspoken in the first few episodes of XY, most notably to her mother due to their semi-strained relationship. After she joins Ash's group, she's characterized as pretty much intrinsically sweet and polite — even in episodes where Grace shows up, she's far more soft-spoken to her mother than she was at first. Justified in that traveling with Ash (her crush) likely helps bring out her inner kindness, along with helping her grow as a young lady.

Trolls film franchise:

  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Branch and his four brothers' parents remain unknown, as they haven't been seen or mention in the film franchise.
Trolls Band Together:
  • Band of Relatives: Brozone is made of five brothers in Branch, Floyd, Clay, Spruce and John Dory.
  • Family Eye Resemblance:
    • Branch, Clay, Spruce and John Dory have the same blue eye color.
    • Poppy and Viva have the same pink eye color.
  • Heartwarming:
    • Spruce and Clay not questioning Branch and John Dory about the Bergens changing their ways shows that they'll always believe their family no matter what, even a member of Family of Choice in Poppy.
    • During rehearsal for the perfect family harmony, Branch and his three brothers didn't get upset with Poppy for interrupting a couple of times and when she express her opinion as they get her well-meaning intentions to help them.
  • What You Are in the Dark: John Dory on the outside can appear a confident leader and older brother to his siblings, but on the inside he could't take the pressure of raising his brothers, which lead him to leaving his siblings and move to the middle of nowhere.

Evil Is Cool

Hilda and the Mountain King: Trundle spends the entire movie proving to us that he's the Mountain King for a damn good reason. He's given a stoic and chilling performance by Dino Kelly, which just the epithome of Faux Affably Evil, he manipulatively gains Hilda's trust through a genuine Pet the Dog and he comes dangerously close to achieving his well-intentioned goal twice, even dying smiling in triumph.

My Hero Academia: Since it's the Affectionate Parody of the Superhero genre, it's not a suprise that several of the villains have managed to attract the viewers with this:

  • Katsuki Bakugo and Endeavor are rare anti-heroic examples. Sure, for how much of a dicks they are, Bakugo is one of the U.A.'s most capable students, he has an bombastic theme, design and power, and (mostly importantly) never backs down, while Endeavor has a cool design, deep voice and is one of the smartest characters in the entire show, considering he has a record of the most cases solved.
  • The Leauge of Villains is this in spades, since they're a bunch of Badass Fighters and Tragic Villains, with each member having a creative superpower and complexed nature, like the Yandere Master of Disguise Toga, the hilarious Me's a Crowd Twice and The Dandy Sizeshifter Mr. Compress. We're not even talking about their leaders, Tomura Shigaraki, who has become a truly cunning villain and an overpowerful Person of Mass Destruction after his Character Development, and All For One, who's a Diabolical Mastermind with countless quirks at his disposal and a trump card in his sleeve to any situation. Some people would go as far to root for them to win.
  • Hero Killer Stain is the Corrupted Character Copy of a 90sAntiHero archetype, being a Badass Normal fighter and a truly intimidating Knight of Cerebus, who's utterly convinced that everything he does is for the better world. Even when beaten up and having his lung punctured, he refuses to give up, managing to make Endeavor back down in fear.
  • Overhaul is a disturbing yakuza boss, yet he's also a scheming planner with an intimidating presence, a cool design (especially his mask) and the power to destroy and recreate everything he touches, not to mention his fight against Midoriya is often called one of the best in the series.
  • Gentle Criminal, despite technically being an Anti-Villain, is still a sharply-dressed Gentleman Thief with a sympathetic backstory, who, of all people, manages to give Midoriya a pretty tough fight.

Pokémon: The Series — Ash Ketchum

  • Outside-the-Box Tactic: One of Ash's greatest attributes is his ability to perform seemingly impossible feats that leave other trainers in and out of the universe in awe. His creative and unconventional tactics often secure him victories before his opponents even have a chance to react to his moves.

Pokemon S 9 E 42 The Unbeatable Lightness Of Seeing

Ash and May struggle to find a way forward after suffering recent losses. Thankfully, some of their old friends and rivals arrive to lend a hand and offer support.

  • Call-Back: Although subtle, May's initial harsh reaction to Max's recommendation of training with Ash was quickly followed by a moment of self-reflection. She gently and nervously explained that she might not be as strong as Ash, so training with his help might not be a good idea. This reaction likely comes from her memory of the last time she got too angry and prideful with Ash when he was trying to help out. As a result, she ended up paying a heavy price for her behavior.
  • I Have Become Complacent: After clashing with Drew, May realizes that she has grown too reliant on her aggressive battle style - much like Ash. As a coordinator, she knows this will not be enough to reach her full potential, so she decides to venture off to Johto alone. By doing so, she hopes to not only become a better coordinator but also a better person.

Pokemon S 10 E 4 Dawn Of A New Era

  • Feud Episode: During the episode, Ash and Dawn spend most of their time arguing about a Buneary that she failed to catch. They also have a disagreement about whether Nando should participate in Gym Battles or Contests. Their argument forces them to spend the night camping instead of sleeping at the Pokemon Center. However, with Nando's meditative advice, Ash and Dawn reconcile and promise to be better friends with each other.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Ash and Dawn had a disagreement over whether Nando should participate in Gym Battles or Contests. They were both so passionate about their own opinions that they decided to go out into the woods at night to find him and persuade him to choose a path. Unfortunately, they were unable to locate him, and by the time they realized it, it was too late to return to the Center. As a result, they had to spend the night camping out. This incident played a significant role in their reconciliation with each other.

  • Jujutsu Kaisen: Chapter 257 reveals that Ryomen Sukuna was already a rotten individual before he was even born, as he cannibalized his twin brother while inside the womb of his malnourished mother and even if the act was a survival tactic, he still feels no remorse for the act or sympathy towards his twin brother.
For Ninjago - Villains

Can't Go Home Again

Lottie

  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the Silver Eyes, she had a male love interest in the form of John, with no strong indicators that she was interested in women. In this version? She has a budding romance with Elizabeth Afton.

  • Composite Character:

    • She is largely based on the novel version of Charlie. She is a late teenager with the same friend group as her novel counterpart. However, that version of Charlie turned out to be a robotic recreation of the original Charlie; who was killed as a child by William. In this version, it is the original Charlie who survived to her teenage years and gained these traits.

    • Her soul ends up inhabiting the 'security puppet' animatronic from Pizzeria Simulator. In the game, the security puppet is just a modern version of the puppet with no soul inside of it.

  • Named In The Adaptation: The 'Security Puppet' was only called the Security Puppet in canon. Once Charlie inhabits it, they give her the name 'Lottie'.

Urusei Yatsura, a tropes for Shinobu Miyake.

  • Berserk Button: Don't act lustful and she will always be nice to you.
  • Hime Cut: Shinobu is a prim honors student with straight bangs down to her eyebrows.

  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Carly and Freddie mention in the reboot series that Sam has become a member of a motorcycle gang. Though they laugh it off, it gets to show being unintelligent, unmotivated and unambitious can limit one's chances in life. On a different show, a delinquent like Sam might leave her rebellious ways behind and find a steady job but Sam has no such Character Development. Moreover, Carly can only be Sam's moral guidance for so long and the formal can hardly control the latter during their teen years.

Cold Case S 4 E 17 Shuffle Ball Change

  • Big Fish in a Bigger Ocean: Grant is a talented wrestler, but seeing how good the other candidates in the Junior Olympic program are freaks him out enough to fake an injury to quit.
  • Motive Misidentification: Grant didn't kill his brother for any of the reasons the detectives think (rejecting him for his dancing, feeling jealous, or blaming Maurice for ruining his wrestling career by hurting his knee), and in fact seemed to be making peace with him about all of those events right before Maurice died. Instead, he beat his brother to death during an Unstoppable Rage because Maurice wanted him to stop faking his injury and go back to wrestling when Grant felt trapped by it.

@ The Phil Silvers Show

  • Big Fish in a Bigger Ocean: In one episode, Bilko gets a particularly hunky new platoon member to audition for a Tarzan movie, hoping to ride the guy's coattails to wealth and fame, only for the other auditioning bodybuilders to be even beefier, to the point where the judge calls Bilko's subordinate "Skinny."

@ Ciaphas Cain

  • Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: He is probably the burliest member of his squad and easily pulls Cain up to the top of a rock formation after reaching down to grab his arm. He is also the first named active-duty member of the regiment (not counting some who were court-martialled out and sent on a suicide mission) to die in the series.
  • Due to the Dead: Poignantly subverted when Cain and the squad want to bring his body home for burial but have to reluctantly burn it so the Necrons won’t know there are humans nearby.

  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: He is good at running mining equipment and is also an avid biologist.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He constantly feuds with the Administratum office over the smallest thing, to the point where his complimenting Quintus for his Awesome by Analysis skills and protesting a decision at the same time Pryke does both earn shocked stares.

    Albrin
A corporal who briefly comes to Cain’s attention during the Adumbria campaign.
  • Badass Bookworm: He is a quartermaster’s clerk who nonetheless gets into fights on leave and successfully leads the defense of an area in battle through ambush and fortification tactics.

    Kuryakin
A rare Ordo Hereticus inquisitor whom Amberly apparently gets along with.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: Amberly sends him to Perlia to investigate reports on heretical actions but he only arrives after the end of the Second Siege of Peril.
  • The Ghost: He is mentioned in the footnotes of two books but has yet to meet Cain.
  • Hero of Another Story: He apparently spends decades, if not longer, investigating a conspiracy involving senior tech priests deliberately building sites over Necron tombs and risking countless lives for the chance to loot Archaetoech.

  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Her extreme haughtiness is tempered by discussions about Chaos ritual sacrifices being used to summon a daemon.

  • Jerkass: He is a disrespectful, insinuation-prone cost-cutter who dislikes criticism.
    Addie
The captain of an aging transport ship dubbed the Rustbucket that takes Cain, Amberly, and their respective people to Ironfound in the tenth book.
  • Brutal Honesty: She gives bad news calmly and without evasion.
  • Consummate Professional: She remains composed and focused on getting the ship within range of defensive guns faster throughout a tense starship Chase Scene where they are unsure if much faster Elder ships are charging toward them or said defenses.

@ Ciaphas Cain

  • Friendly Enemy Gorok makes a decent impression throughout his surprisingly and regrettably few scenes in the first book.
  • The two unnamed, We Hardly Knew Ye Ork Mooks from Caves of Ice who manage to engage in close-quarters combat with the Necrons (with one destroying a Necron and the other using a dismembered body part as a weapon) are probably more popular than any warboss in the Cain series.

@ Ciaphas Cain

  • A corrupted tech-priest uses a cargo-lifting servitor to squash the head of a Chaos Space Marine.
  • In "The Only Good Ork," Cain convinces a lone Ork to attack a gene stealer swarm before the two of them fight. The Ork kills dozens of them and, once he and Cain begin dueling, is proficient enough to have the advantage for several seconds despite multiple las-rounds having partially torn his stomach open.

@ Ciaphas Cain

    Caves of Ice
  • The first time a trooper dies, the others solemnly have to burn his body to avoid the Necrons learning of their presence.
  • While setting off a massive explosion to wipe out the Necrons is mainly a Moment of Awesome, Cain and the Valhalla’s are left solemn by the destruction of the Scenery Porn they were admiring mere days ago.

@ Men of Sherwood

  • The eponymous characters in the LEGO Exo-Force books, both named protagonists and background characters, do a good job of keeping their mountain safe from evil robots regardless of the odds they face.

@ Ellery Queen

  • Ass Pull: The Dying Clue in the Pilot Movie actually makes no sense, given how the victim supposedly wanted to draw the police’s attention to what was playing on a TV set even though that clue only appeared almost the exact second she died and she spent several seconds before that trying to set up the clue, while something completely different was on TV.

@ Cudjo's Cave Some of the setting and characters are inspired by a real-life Tennesse Underground Railroad outpost that Quaker William Hackney operated out of a cave. The real-life Tennessee cavern and popular tourist destination Gap Cave was temporarily renamed Cud’s Cave to capitalize on the novel.

@ Toy Soldiers

  • Moe: Joey may have his Hot-Blooded moments, but his artistic side and bemused moments of trying to rein in Billy’s Class Clown antics can make him feel like the most adorable of the kids.

@ Went the Day Well?

  • Signature Scene: The kindly postmistress attacking a Nazi with an axe is one of the movie’s most talked about moments.

@ Star Wars: Escape From Valo

  • Escaped Animal Rampage: Downplayed. The animals from the wrecked zoo keep the Nihil out but are peaceful and protective toward the heroes hiding there due to Tep Tip being a Friend to All Living Things.
  • Voice of the Resistance: In the first scene, Ram hijacks the loudspeakers the Nihil have set up through the city to denounce their occupation as illegal, and he also sends out radio signals off world to announce that there is a resistance on Valo.

@ Cold Case

  • The moment Jerkass dying businessman Jay Gratton from "The Good Death" starts redeeming himself is when he visits the mother of another patient who he earlier mocked and gives her a butterfly wind chime to remind her of her daughter’s happier moments.

@ The Spiderwick Chronicles

The TV Series

  • Critic-Proof: Despite several prominent negative reviews and the infamy of being rejected by Disney+, the show set a Roku viewership record after coming out.
  • Never Live It Down: Many people were alarmed by the show before it even came out because Disney+ did not want it. With some of their earlier efforts, they'd already attracted a reputation for being willing to put on bad adaptations of popular YA books.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The real Dr. Brauer's status as a caring father and famous psychiatrist who also shows some good Spot the Imposter cunning (and who could have given his impersonator Mulgarath some Talking To Yourself moments) dies in the first scene.
  • Watched It for the Representation: Some fans enjoy the focus on kids with mental health issues, with Jared’s friends Emokio and Hatcher receiving particular praise.

@ Cold Case

@ Cold Case

  • Hope Spot: In many final flashback scenes, despite the Foregone Conclusion that there will be a murder, there are moments where it looks as if the victim will somehow come out of a situation alive (or at least defuse things with a relatively likable character who looks like the killer at that point) only to end up dead by the end of the scene anyway.
    • The victim in "A Time to Hate" tries to fight back against The bully Terrible Trio with a baseball bat before they take it away and use it on him.
    • In "Static" and "November 22nd", the killers lower their guns for a moment before deciding to shoot the victims after all.
    • In "Wednesday's Women," the victim's Obfuscating Stupidity act makes fools most of The Klan and they leave her alone, but the one guy she made look like an idiot by fooling the others is mad enough to run her down.
    • Episodes like "It's Raining Men," "Start-Up," "Shuffle, Ball, Change," and "The Crossing" have the victims seeking to mend fences with the killers and reaching out to them in ways that are sometimes even briefly reciprocated before the killer snaps in a moment of anger or is too weak to give up on a premeditated murder plot.

@ Star Wars Legends

  • Badass Adorable youngling Zett Jukassa, armored Tattooine denizen Rango "Tank Head" Tel, and Young and in Charge Queen of Naboo Apailana all only appear in a few seconds of the prequel movies but have large fanbases that are partially attributable to their All There in the Manual or expanded universe activities and characterizations (Zett catching the murderer of his parents, Tel being a particularly hapless bounty hunter, and Apailana resisting the Empire).
  • Shapeshifting anthropologist Mammon Hoole narrates one chapter of The Illustrated Star Wars Universe but was enough of a Breakout Character to later star in Galaxy of Fear and be the in-universe author of the Scrapbook Story Essential Guide to Alien Species.

@ Nice Mean And In Between

Magrat Glick:: That other man brought [the baby prince] out here to save him. He wanted us to keep him safe! It’s obvious. It’s destiny.
Granny Weatherwax:: Oh obvious., I’ll grant you it's obvious. Trouble is, just because things are obvious doesn't mean they're true.
Magrat: Yes, but the point is-
Granny: The point is, that people are going to come looking. Serious people. Serious looking. Pull-down-the-walls and burn-off-the-thatch looking. And-
Gytha 'Nanny' Ogg: Howsa boy, den?
Granny: And Gytha, I'm sure we'll all be a Lot happier if you'd stop gurgling like that.
Nanny: You're not telling me how to look after a child. And me with fifteen of my own?

@ Star Wars – Outer Rim Territories

  • Adaptational Heroism: They passively support the Empire in Legends but constantly fight it in this canon (mainly due to how they have to put up Vader colonizing and tormenting them).

@ 30 Days of Night The frightening vampires, background colors, and blazes of gunfire are especially striking.

  • The oil painting style of Beyond Barrow is detailed and rich in color, but perhaps the most consistently praised part of it is the detail that’s put into the blowing snow, large snowdrifts, and the northern lights, which really captures the cold of an Alaskan winter.

@ Rushmore

  • The montage of all of Max's extracurricular activities is glorious, as is the Surprisingly Realistic Outcome follow-up of him being lectured for how they interfere with his studies.
  • Max somehow rigs a normal-looking tree to fall down when it is touched the right way.
  • Margaret uses a model plane to make a big entrance while Max is flying a kite.
  • Max uses fake explosions, pulleys, model helicopters in the background, and recordings or real-life speeches about the war to realistically simulate a battlefield.

...which just the epitome of Faux Affably Evil...

Since it's an Affectionate...it's not a surprise that...

Sure, for how much of a dicks they are...

The League of Villains...creative superpower and complex nature...and an overpowered Person...

^ We don't have a Badass Fighter trope. Did you mean Badass Normal?

...Corrupted Character Copy of a 90sAntiHero archetype...

^ TV Tropes can't read a Blue Link that starts with a number. In order for 90sAntiHero to be accepted, it has to be written as NinetiesAntiHero.

Overhaul is a disturbing Yakuza boss,...his fight against Midoriya is often being called one of the best in the series.

The Meta Liberation Army is another villainous Badass Crew <- no comma which gives the League a tough time fighting. Miss Curious is capable of turning everything she touches into a bomb, Skeptic is a tech expert with the power to create lookalikes of anyone, Trumpet can empower his henchmen through the power of loyalty, and the leader Re-Destro is capable of Hulking Out. The fact they're all Villains With Good Publicity and an interesting ideology also helps.

And that's when he's not even trying to fight back...

Changed verbs to present tense as per How to Write an Example - Write in Historical Present Tense.

Although subtle, May's initial harsh reaction to Max's recommendation of training with Ash is quickly followed by a moment of self-reflection. She gently and nervously explains that she might not be as strong as Ash, so training with his help might not be a good idea.

Ash and Dawn have a disagreement over whether Nando should participate in Gym Battles or Contests. They are both so passionate about their own opinions that they decide to go out into the woods at night to find him and persuade him to choose a path. Unfortunately, they are unable to locate him, and by the time they realize it, it is too late to return to the Center. As a result, they have to spend the night camping out. This incident plays a significant role in their reconciliation with each other.
