Opened now that we're back down to 50 threads. I've thought for a while that this trope should be expanded, because a character claiming a joke isn't funny or at least initially being reluctant to call it funny, followed by laughing at it and/or admitting they did think it was funny, is still a trope, and I don't think it's covered elsewhere.
That said, since a lot of examples merely mention a character finding a joke funny regardless of the circumstances (which seems to me like a ZCE at best and Chairs at worst), it does look like there's misuse that doesn't fit that definition.
Making it IUEO also sounds like a good idea based on the fact that it's being used for meta examples.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.LUMPER ALERT!!!
I don't think "someone unexpectedly finds a joke about themselves funny" is that splitworthy from "someone unexpectedly finds a joke funny". Seems like it's a common variant at best.
I don't think it's splitworthy, either, which is why I'm in favor of expanding the definition.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Expand, I suppose.
One of these days, all of you will accept me as your supreme overlord.Do we have a character trope version for this trope? Someone who was thought unable to take ribbing or criticism actually accepts/finds it funny?
Can't Take Criticism might cover it.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I would support expanding the definition.
Trust no one.Expand.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessIf expanding, may we have the original definition as a common way the trope is used? I think "someone chuckling at a joke made at their expense" v. "someone unexpectedly finding a tortured pun funny" is notable even if not hard-split-worthy.
I think a solid definition for this is to just say it's when someone finds a joke funny when outside factors means they really probably shouldn't laugh. That's kind of vague, but it covers both of the variations Tabs mentioned.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI don't have a problem with listing the original definition as a way it can occur.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Crowner hooked since it's been three days.
Edit: Posted a bulletin on ATT.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. Can Real Life examples be allowed under IUEO, as long as it's a real person finding another real person's joke to be unexpectedly funny? Both real people would be in the same universe, so to speak.
As I understand it, the intersection of Real Life and IUEO examples are non-fiction works (autobiographies, newsletters, stand-up comedy), since those are still published and edited.
The unexpected aspect isn't that the person who finds the joke funny wasn't expecting a funny joke from the person telling it, it's that the person who finds the joke funny wasn't expected to find it funny, particularly if they were reluctant to admit it or if they initially denied it was funny.
Unless I misunderstood what you were saying regarding how you interpreted that crowner option, which isn't out of the question since I haven't been feeling the best lately.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I'm pretty sure IUEO allows real life examples. IUEO is about meta and audience opinion, and the tropes can still happen in real life (real life being a universe).
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessMy (mis)interpretation of Actually Pretty Funny itself isn't relevant to what I was trying to ask, anyway.
That was what I was assuming as well.

Calling in favor of the following:
- Make In-Universe Examples Only
- Broaden the definition to include any instance of a character unexpectedly finding a joke funny, even if they're not the butt of it
We need a sandbox for the revised description, and examples that don't fit either the new definition or the IUEO restriction must be removed.
Edit: Wait a minute... I checked and it's already on the IUEO index. The addition could have been unilateral based on the edit reason given, so at the very least, this thread made it official regardless of the status of the original addition.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. What is the difference between NRLEP and IUEO?
- NRLEP: Only fictional examples.
- IUEO: Examples can only occur within the work. No audience opinions.
- Allowed: Ear Worm: In this Panel Show, an advertising jingle is played. The contestants grumble throughout the show that it's stuck in their heads.
- Not allowed: Ear Worm: In this Panel Show, an advertising jingle is played. It's so catchy, it's sure to get in your head.
Or do you mean you want the difference between them when this trope is used?
So... general consensus is that we broaden the trope?
"Unite GUN/BAZOOKA/LAUNCHER/TANK!"We already decided to expand the definition.
Speaking of which, is the sandbox ready? Some wick cleanup would still be necessary even with the expanded definition, partially because of the IUEO restriction, and partially because some wicks don't fit either the expanded definition or the old definition.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Double posting because I made Sandbox.Actually Pretty Funny, and I can't think of any more changes to make. I removed a part that didn't fit the IUEO restriction, and I added a new part to the second paragraph that covers cases where a character is initially reluctant to call a joke funny.
The Laconic already appears to fit what we're going for, despite the old definition.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I swapped in the sandbox because very few changes needed to be made. Here are the wicks since there were some IUEO violations in the wick check, plus some examples still don't fit the expanded definition.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.
This trope is someone finding a joke made at their expense funny. It often is misused as "someone unexpectedly finds a joke funny".
Wick check: 71

General Curnow: To be honest, I'm not even sure! My men, your Overseers, a few whores, maybe a little too much ale. One harmless prank with a runaway chicken, and ten minutes later, Treaver's Alley is a sea of blood and teeth.
High Overseer Campbell: I almost wish I'd been there.
