This trope is someone finding a joke made at their expense funny. It often is misused as "someone unexpectedly finds a joke funny".

Wick check: 71

    Correct: 18
  • Characters. The Weaver Option: When Taylor zings Malekith by saying that the standards must have been rather low if he made the cut as Emperor of the Aeldari, she finds it hilarious.
  • ComicBook.Fantastic Four: In issue 518 of the 1998 series:
Johnny: AAAUUGH! It's horrible! Make it invisible! Make it invisible!
Sue: Then how is Ben supposed to hit it?
Johnny: I was talking about Ben.
Ben: You little...naw, wait, that wuz a good one.
  • Creator.John Romero: The final level of Doom II required players to fire rockets into a secret room and hit John Romero's disembodied head with splash damage. It was originally intended as an Easter Egg Take That! at Romero from his co-workers, but when he found it, he became enamored of it and recorded the backwards message (quoted at the top of the page) that plays just before it starts tossing out monsters.
  • Fakin' MacGuffin: In Guardians of the Galaxy, the orb Quill hands to Yondu in the end does not contain the Infinity Stone but a troll figure. Quill later reveals the real orb to his team mates. Yondu finds this Actually Pretty Funny.
  • Fanfic.Between My Brother And Me Ab Inito: To the Tune of...: In response to Rebecca's Shout-Out, Freddy sings his own verse of "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" but with Rebecca instead (which she finds to be Actually Pretty Funny).
  • Funny.Live PD: The October 11, 2019 episode: An officer performing a field sobriety test on a drunk driver. A nearby bystander started playing the theme song from COPS and N.W.A's "Fuck tha Police" at full blast from their car stereo. The officer himself got a good laugh from it. Then in the studio Sgt. Sean "Sticks" Larkin gives the recap and has do a Verbal Backspace when he goes over the song since the network probably does not want him to mention their competition.
Sticks: "Someone in the background was playing the theme song from Co... some other police show."
  • Halloween Songs: In the one of the Cheers "Bar Wars" episodes set at Halloween, the rival bar pranks Cheers by rigging their jukebox to play "Monster Mash" incessantly. Sam is annoyed by the song but concedes it is Actually Pretty Funny. (In syndication, the song was replaced with "Vampire Twist" by Brave Combo.)
  • Literature.I Funny: Even though Jamie regrets making fun of his friends and Uncle Frankie in the second round, they forgive him since his comedy alows them to laugh at themselves. As Uncle Frankie tells him, being able to laugh at himself keeps him young.
  • Memes.Sports: Boring James Milner.Explanation
  • Quotes. The Prima Donna: He said, 'In it, you'll play a character who becomes sort of God,' and then, he paused and said, 'something, of course, you always thought you were,' I thought that was funny."
  • Series.Argumental: Even better is that said bodybuilder was struggling valiantly to keep from corpsing throughout the bit.
  • Series.Kitchen Nightmares: During his time at Momma Cherri's Soul Food Shack, Ramsay talks to one of the cooks, a part-timer whose primary job was repairing cars, about picking between one of the jobsnote . Ramsay notes that, even though the pay and hours are crappy, you'll do it because you love it. The cook responds he'd love it even more if he was as rich as Ramsay, getting a chuckle out of him.
  • Tactful Translation:
    • Defied in Patton; when at the joint celebration with the Russians, Patton is offered a drink. His response? "I won't drink with that Russian son of a bitch." The translator tries to protest that he cannot say such a thing, but Patton tells him to say it, "word for word." After doing so, the Russian general responds back, "I also think YOU are a son of a bitch." That is something Patton will drink to, one son of a bitch to another.
    • A notable inversion occurs in the final season of The Wire. After a prolonged behind the scenes political struggle, the new mayor of Baltimore Tommy Carcetti manages to get rid of Police Commissioner Ervin Burrell, who Carcetti long considered a hack but was unable to fire due to Burrell's political connections. When Carcetti gives a standard making nice political speech honoring Burrell, the Baltimore Sun line edtor Gus Haynes translates the speech into the truth. Even Gus' workplace enemies are amused by the routine.
Tommy Carcetti: I chaired the public safety subcommittee, and I called upon him (Burrell) many times. We worked closely together then, and when I became Mayor, we formed a strong relationship...
Gus Haynes: "He feared and hated me, and I merely wanted him dead."
Tommy Carcetti: ...making Baltimore a safer city...
Gus Haynes: "Don't stray from the Inner Harbor."
Tommy Carcetti: ...I know that the criminal justice coordinating council need a new...
Gus Haynes: "It took a while, but I finally put his ass out to pasture."
  • Trivia.Sabotage 1936: Hostility on the Set: Hitchcock had long been a fan of Sylvia Sidney, and got his studio to work out a deal to bring her in from Hollywood for this film. But her fussy, almost proto-Method Acting approach (she had to "get into the right mood" before a scene) frustrated him, and they eventually clashed during the shoot. She was also appalled at the way Hitchcock teased Desmond Tester, though Tester later said he thought it was Actually Pretty Funny and enjoyed working with Hitchcock.
  • Webcomic. The Word Weary: Though initially annoyed at Yorick's shirt with his face on it, John later remarks to himself that he thinks it's funny.
  • WebVideo.Deez Nuts: Despite falling for Welven's joke, Welven's dad still finds it funny and laughs along with him.
  • YMMV.Running With Scissors: Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: Jews don't just have a good sense of humor about "Pretty Fly For A Rabbi," they've completely adopted it as their own, to the point that it contributed to a rumor that Al himself was Jewish (he's a non-practicing Christian). It helps that Al already has a large Jewish fanbase and most of the stereotypes he name-checks are positive, and Judaism itself is a culture that's largely fond of Self-Deprecation.
  • YMMV.The Simpsons S 13 E 1 Treehouse Of Horror XII: Shallow Parody: Quite a few fans and critics criticized "Wiz Kids" for this. Indeed, the writers admitted they didn't spend a lot of time researching the Harry Potter books beforehand. J.K. Rowling, for her part, said she found it Actually Pretty Funny and guest-starred in a later episode ("The Regina Monologues").

Opened now that we're back down to 50 threads. I've thought for a while that this trope should be expanded, because a character claiming a joke isn't funny or at least initially being reluctant to call it funny, followed by laughing at it and/or admitting they did think it was funny, is still a trope, and I don't think it's covered elsewhere.

That said, since a lot of examples merely mention a character finding a joke funny regardless of the circumstances (which seems to me like a ZCE at best and Chairs at worst), it does look like there's misuse that doesn't fit that definition.

Making it IUEO also sounds like a good idea based on the fact that it's being used for meta examples.

LUMPER ALERT!!!

I don't think "someone unexpectedly finds a joke about themselves funny" is that splitworthy from "someone unexpectedly finds a joke funny". Seems like it's a common variant at best.

[up]I don't think it's splitworthy, either, which is why I'm in favor of expanding the definition.

Do we have a character trope version for this trope? Someone who was thought unable to take ribbing or criticism actually accepts/finds it funny?

If expanding, may we have the original definition as a common way the trope is used? I think "someone chuckling at a joke made at their expense" v. "someone unexpectedly finding a tortured pun funny" is notable even if not hard-split-worthy.

I think a solid definition for this is to just say it's when someone finds a joke funny when outside factors means they really probably shouldn't laugh. That's kind of vague, but it covers both of the variations Tabs mentioned.

Can Real Life examples be allowed under IUEO, as long as it's a real person finding another real person's joke to be unexpectedly funny? Both real people would be in the same universe, so to speak.

As I understand it, the intersection of Real Life and IUEO examples are non-fiction works (autobiographies, newsletters, stand-up comedy), since those are still published and edited.

[up][up]The unexpected aspect isn't that the person who finds the joke funny wasn't expecting a funny joke from the person telling it, it's that the person who finds the joke funny wasn't expected to find it funny, particularly if they were reluctant to admit it or if they initially denied it was funny.

Unless I misunderstood what you were saying regarding how you interpreted that crowner option, which isn't out of the question since I haven't been feeling the best lately.

I'm pretty sure IUEO allows real life examples. IUEO is about meta and audience opinion, and the tropes can still happen in real life (real life being a universe).

Calling in favor of the following:

  • Make In-Universe Examples Only
  • Broaden the definition to include any instance of a character unexpectedly finding a joke funny, even if they're not the butt of it

We need a sandbox for the revised description, and examples that don't fit either the new definition or the IUEO restriction must be removed.

Edit: Wait a minute... I checked and it's already on the IUEO index. The addition could have been unilateral based on the edit reason given, so at the very least, this thread made it official regardless of the status of the original addition.

What is the difference between NRLEP and IUEO?

Tabs Since: Jan, 2001
#21: Dec 14th 2021 at 9:23:51 AM

  • NRLEP: Only fictional examples.
  • IUEO: Examples can only occur within the work. No audience opinions.
    • Allowed: Ear Worm: In this Panel Show, an advertising jingle is played. The contestants grumble throughout the show that it's stuck in their heads.
    • Not allowed: Ear Worm: In this Panel Show, an advertising jingle is played. It's so catchy, it's sure to get in your head.

Or do you mean you want the difference between them when this trope is used?

[up]We already decided to expand the definition.

Speaking of which, is the sandbox ready? Some wick cleanup would still be necessary even with the expanded definition, partially because of the IUEO restriction, and partially because some wicks don't fit either the expanded definition or the old definition.

Double posting because I made Sandbox.Actually Pretty Funny, and I can't think of any more changes to make. I removed a part that didn't fit the IUEO restriction, and I added a new part to the second paragraph that covers cases where a character is initially reluctant to call a joke funny.

The Laconic already appears to fit what we're going for, despite the old definition.

I swapped in the sandbox because very few changes needed to be made. Here are the wicks since there were some IUEO violations in the wick check, plus some examples still don't fit the expanded definition.
