The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

Alright I got a few proposals for you guys from a webcomic that I've been a fan of for a while.

What;s The Work?

I Love Yoo is a webcomic available on Line Webtoon. It follows a troubled young girl named Shin-Ae Yoo, the plot kicks off when she turns down a Love Confession from a classmate of hers. After this she meets his friend Yeong-Gi and his brother Kosuke, the heirs to the wealthy Hirahara family.

Who is Sang Chul Kim?

Sang Chul is an employee of the Hirahara corporation and the son of Mr. Gun Kim, an important business partner of the Hiraharas. He first appears at a masked party that Shin-Ae goes to near the beginning of the comic, where she meets Yeong-Gi. He starts bothering Shin-Ae while his friend drugs her drink. Fortunately for her, Yeong-Gi drinks it instead and passes out (it has not been 100% confirmed to be him but it is heavily implied to be him). Later Shin-Ae starts working for the Hirahara corporation under Sang Chul. Later in the comic Shin-Ae is blackmailed by Yeong-Gi and Kosuke's mother Yui (I'll propose her later), into going to a party hosted Gun Kim. As it turns out, Yui has actually enlisted Sang Chul to help her with a scheme against Shin-Ae. She provides him with a roofie which he uses on her, leading her to a private room where he tries to rape her. Shin-Ae, despite being barely aware of what's actually happening due to the drug, punches him in the groin and escapes. After this Yeong-Gi and Sang Chul run into each other while they are both looking for Shin-Ae and Sang Chul insults Yeong-Gi, Shin Ae, and brags about how he's going to kiss Yeong-Gi's girlfriend, all of which leads to Yeong-Gi punching him out. After this, Yeong-Gi and Sang Chul are forced to work under Kosuke (a position Shin-Ae is moved to as well) by their parents as a way to try and make them get along. This goes poorly due to Sang Chul being a lazy Jerkass who is a terrible employee and hates being around Yeong-Gi. That’s where he stands in the comic right now.

Evil Is Cool? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

None. Nada. Zilch. Nothing in the comic makes him come off as anything other than a spoiled, perverted prick. The best he gets is that his Jerkass attitude at work is used for a few jokes at his expense but that's it.

Verdict?

A pretty easy keep.

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheon

This huge batch is up, after a little grammar checkup:

  • Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer: The killers serving as the Big Bad Duumvirate are both awful in their own ways:
    • The titular Henry displays absolutely no genuine empathy for those around him, simply sitting back and watching a man being murdered in the park. He kills several people before meeting Otis and teams up with him to kill several more, including a whole family, snapping the young son's neck on camera. In the end, although he seems to show a redeeming quality by killing Otis to save Becky from being raped by him, he subverts this by killing Becky — who was being shaped up as a Morality Pet to him — and leaving her dismembered remains on the side of the road.
    • The aforementioned Otis, while not on the same level of depravity as Henry, proves to be plenty contemptible in his own right. He is Henry's former cellmate who's letting him stay with him as he passes through the town. Implied to have been in prison for rape, Otis is introduced perving on his own sister Becky while helping her escape her abusive husband. After witnessing Henry murder a couple of prostitutes, Otis joins him in the killing, though Henry has to regularly stop him from raping women. However, he pushes the envelope as far as he can without crossing the line, including molesting the mother of a family the two massacres. Eventually, Otis gives in to his urges and rapes Becky, only to be stabbed to death by her and Henry, who has gotten sick of his perversion getting in the way.

A Song of Ice and Fire

  • Robb Returns:
    • Ser Willem Bootle is a Riverlands knight known across three kingdoms as a ne’er-do-well who alienated all his neighbors. Looking to pay back a debt, Bootle travels to his cousin Lord Torgen Surestone’s keep, whereupon he poisons Lord Surestone and declares himself lord on account of his gender, then proceeds to seize the estate and evict Surestone’s daughter Dacey, the rightful heir. It’s revealed later that Bootle ordered an innkeeper named Edwyn Dickon to keep her at his inn and turn her into a prostitute to keep her from contesting his title. Upon his capture, Bootle declares that he should have been heir because Dacey is a bookish girl and remains defiant up until he attempts to swear his innocence on the Fist of Winter, which judges him guilty and strikes him down; his lies literally killed him.
    • The aforementioned Edwyn Dickon is an innkeeper who is incapable of dealing honestly with anyone. Ordered by Ser Willem Bootle to turn Dacey into a prostitute, Dickon drives up unreasonable prices for board and medicine, insinuating that there are “other ways” to pay back her debt. Dickon makes the mistake of trying to cheat a wealthy merchant and making advances on his wife; the wife punches him and he falls into a full bucket of slops and drowns, And There Was Much Rejoicing. After his death, it’s revealed that he stole something from everyone at the inn. In general, Edwyn Dickon was A Dick in Name and deed.

Shin Megami Tensei

  • Shin Megami Tensei I: Ozawa is a Yakuza punk who extorts money from the townspeople and is introduced beating the Chaos Hero before working with General Gotou's military coup to become powerful. After the thirty-year Time Skip, he grows from an asshole teenager to an asshole middle-aged man ruling Shinjuku with an iron fist, making a pact with the god Minakata to be able to do those same deeds on a wider scale. Visionary Items reveals that he also betrayed his original boss before taking over Shinjuku. Ruling using fear and brainwashing against dissidents, Ozawa was hated for almost everyone who met him.
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey:
    • Mitra is an Evilutionary Biologist trying to find a way to induce the perfect insanity in humans. Experimenting on multiple human soldiers in front of Zelenin and the protagonist, Mitra also keeps them as decorations in his room. Once the protagonist defies him, Mitra says that humans should be grateful to him for his attempts to "reshape them" and declares that humans are pointless creatures, promising to reshape the world instead. Returning from death to work for Mother Tiamat, Mitra declares that human experimentation is over and that "Now, it's time for atonement and death". A particularly nasty demon even among the misanthropic demons of the Schwarzwelt, Mitra was the main reason behind Zelenin's hate towards demonkind.
    • Captain Jack is a mercenary whose purpose in the story is to bring attention to the potential for humans to be just as depraved as demons and angels, if not moreso. Introduced as an uneasy ally, it's later revealed that like Mitra, Jack conducts a variety of unethical experiments on living beings. In Jack's case, he tears demons apart and tries to fuse them together, the results being not horribly painful but also ineffective. Once he catches Jimenez, a longtime ally of the protagonist, Jack tortures him and his demon partner Boogaloo before fusing them, intending to use the creature as his slave. When finally confronted by the protagonist and Jimenez, Jack's only action is to scold them for costing him valuable men and equipment before engaging them in a final battle. A man who will commit any crime for money and earns Jimenez's utter hatred, Jack is the catalyst for Jimenez's alliance with demonkind.
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV: Tayama controls the post-apocalyptic Tokyo through blackmail and by threatening to stop producing Red Pills, drug demons can feed off of instead of eating humans, if his authority is ever challenged. However, he also runs a human farm where Magnetite is extracted directly from the brains of people he has kidnapped and children he has bred for that purpose, which is the secret ingredient of the pills. On top of that, an NPC implies he engages in Wife Husbandry. Disgusting and horrifying everyone who discovers his secret, Tayama tries to claim that he's trying to protect the peace between humans and demons in Tokyo, but his obvious ambition and lack of empathy make it obvious that he's just trying to preserve his power at all costs.
  • Persona 3: Of the major villains, Nyx herself is being forced to destroy the world by Erebus, who himself is too animalistic to hate, and even Takaya Sakaki has a Pet the Dog moment near the end. These two, however, are nothing but loathsome:
    • Kouetsu Kirijo is the Greater-Scope Villain of the game. The head of the Kirijo group, he researched shadow as a source of energy, and in the process became obsessed with bringing about the Fall, the end of humanity. To this end, he experimented on children, gave machines sentient life only to treat them as weapons and kill many of them, and corrupted his scientist subordinates into embracing his philosophy of death. Despite not appearing in the actual game due to his death, Kouetsu Kirijo casts a dark shadow over the events of the game.
    • Shuji Ikutsuki, Chairman of S.E.E.S., initially appears to be a benevolent mentor, but in truth is the true mastermind behind the first half of the game. He uses the player as his personal pawn to revive Nyx, and to make matters worse, once the party catches on to the truth, he forcibly takes control of Aigis and crucifies the party with the intent of sacrificing them to Nyx. Mitsuru's father then shows up to confront him, and in the ensuing confrontation, both men end up dead, but with Nyx unleashed, who becomes the antagonist of the second half. His crimes get even worse in the Persona 4: Arena duology, in which it's revealed that Ikutsuki was responsible for experimenting on Sho Minazuki just as he did on Takaya and the other members of Strega, so much of the hardship and tragedy in the games involving the P3 cast is his fault. Willing to aid the destruction of the world to appease his God of Evil, Shuji Ikutsuki eclipses even said god in villainy and despicableness.
  • Persona 4: The highly unstable and insane Mitsuo Kubo murders Mr. Morooka and takes credit for two prior murders merely to get attention. Once confronted by the Investigation Team about his supposed crimes, he gloats and laughs himself, completely disgusting the main cast. The anime adaptation expands on his character more, showing Mitsuo going on a power trip after killing Mr. Morooka and threatening harm upon Nanako.
  • My Hero Academia (after Muscular): Downplayed with Kai Chisaki/Overhaul. He is a ruthless Yakuza boss who abuses his young ward, Eri, draining her blood to make Quirk-destroying bullets, reassembling her body when she runs out of blood to give and calling her a cursed being born to destroy people. The ordeal has traumatized her so much that even after his defeat, she doesn't know how to smile. He treats his subordinates no better, using one as a meat shield against Shigaraki, killing another for failure, and forcing two to become part of his One-Winged Angel forms. He has Nemoto use a Quirk-destroying bullet on Mirio, destroying the Nice Guy's promising career as a hero. To complicate things, later chapters reveal that he's a Well-Intentioned Extremist who wants his syndicate back to power in hopes of repaying his old boss. The Laser-Guided Karma hits him when Shigaraki and Mr. Compress destroy his arms to avenge Magne's death and the loss of Compress' left arm.
  • Mystery Men: Captain Amazing, real name Lance Hunt, is the superhero of Champion City. Unlike the genuinely heroic Mystery Men, however, Amazing is only in it for the fame and the money and has no respect for his fans or other superheroes. Amazing crosses the line when, in an attempt to keep his sponsors from pulling their endorsements due to his fights being boring without supervillains, he tricks the insane asylum staff in releasing is nemesis Casanova Frankenstein, counting on Casanova to reek havoc. After Casanova blows up the asylum, Amazing arrives to apprehend him (showing no concern for all the inmates, guards, and asylum staff who are all dead because of him), but is captured by Casanova instead, and fails to convince Casanova to release him despite promising to help with the evil plan. Considering he spends his final moments yelling at and insulting the Mystery Men, you will probably cheer at his accidental death by psycho-fraculation.
  • The Saddest Love Story In Westeros: Aegon Targaryen, later King Aegon IV "The Unworthy", was a man ruled only by his insatiable appetites. Marrying his sister Naerys on their father Viserys' orders, Aegon attempted to force their brother Aemon, who loved Naerys, to participate in the bedding ceremony; Naerys' cries nearly prompted Aemon to draw his sword on Aegon in his anger before being talked down by their uncle King Aegon III. Many would agree that Aegon's actions were a very low blow. Throughout their marriage, Aegon routinely humiliated Naerys by parading his mistresses in front of her and raped her almost every night despite her protestations and ill health. After Aegon became King many years later, he hired a man named Ser Morgil Hastwyck to spread rumors that Naerys and Aemon were having an affair, leaving Ser Morgil to die when Aemon challenged and killed him. Aemon is killed by two men trying to avenge their brother's death at King Aegon's hands, but Aegon showed no respect for his brother's loss and only agreed to a funeral because of public outcry; this is when the epitaph "the Unworthy" is attached to Aegon. Naerys' friend Lyssa showed up at the capital to pay her respects, only to leave when Aegon showed sexual interest in her barely pubescent daughter. Naerys reveals that the night after Aemon won a tournament and honored Naerys, Aegon raped her that night just to make her feel bad.
  • Kill la Kill: Satsuki Kiryuin and her Elite Four may be ruthless, pragmatic leaders, but they turn out to have a noble goal and good qualities, unlike these two:
    • Ragyo Kiryuin is the head of REVOCS and one of the worst parents in all fiction. A cruel dictator who serves as the Greater-Scope Villain, Ragyo sends her daughter, Satsuki, to run Honnouji Academy in the same brutal manner that she controls her domain. She displays no real love for Satsuki, as their mother-daughter bonding moments are instead replaced with what amounts to incestual molestation. The action-packed hilarity of the show is drowned out by a pseudo-Cosmic Horror Story the moment she shows up and takes the reins from Satsuki. From there, it is revealed that she experimented on both her daughters, Satsuki and Ryuko, then threw the latter out when she thought Ryuko had died. She also sent Nui Harime to kill Soichirou/Isshin, her husband and the father of Ryuko. When she finally meets Ryuko, she Mind Rapes her and temporarily makes her a minion. Finally, she explains that her ultimate goal is to annihilate humanity and have the alien Life Fibers rule Earth instead. None of her evil plans are expanded upon beyond being evil for the sake of it. An abusive mother and tyrant who happily sells out her own species and is far worse than her daughter, Ragyo Kiryuin shortly and quite rightfully took up the mantle of 'Worst Anime Mother Ever' within the hearts of anime fans.
    • The aforementioned Nui Harime is one of Ragyo’s Co-Dragons. A Cute and Psycho murderess, Nui always keeps a cheerful attitude, even when she is causing misery in others. She toys with her enemies, constantly puts down Ryuko, Satsuki, and anyone who challenges her whenever they fight her, displays smug self-importance, and eventually gleefully reveals to Ryuko that she was the one who killed her father on orders from her mother. Though it is hinted that at least some of this may have come from Ragyo’s abuse, no sympathy is given to her for it, given how gladly she follows Ragyo’s orders. A cheerful yet psychotic girl who makes her fellow Co Dragon Rei Hououmaru look like a saint, Nui Harime commits her evil acts under her twisted belief that hate is the same thing as love.
  • Kingsman:
  • Cthulhu Mythos: Y'golonac is one of the few of his kind that can be regarded as truly evil, being a cosmic Serial Rapist and Serial Killer that has absolutely no problems with defiling and murdering anyone he gets his hands on.
  • Reign in Blood: Infamous Nazi Doctor Josef Mengele is portrayed in as horrific fashion as ever, reveling in his depraved experiments as the song's narrator condemns him as a "butcher" and his acts as "sickening".
  • Warhammer:
    • Mannfred von Carstein is the cowardly and treacherous son of Vlad von Carstein. Similar to his brother Konrad, Mannfred is a brutal and ruthless Vampire Count, ruler of Sylvania. Betraying everyone he allies with and works under, Mannfred thinks nothing of murdering his own family and eventually sells the entire world out to Chaos to save his own skin, only to finally meet his end at the hands of Tyrion after murdering his crippled brother Teclis, but not before his cowardice directly ends the world.
    • Sigvald the Magnificent is the narcissistic Geld-Prince of Slaanesh. Murdering his own father after being exiled for cannibalism, Sigvald eventually made a deal with the God Slaanesh to gain great power and sword skill. Sigvald goes on a brutal rampage against anyone he does not consider attractive enough for his tastes, nailing porcelain masks to the faces of two of his wives, and abandoning the third to die. Sigvald also goes after the High Elves out of jealousy and refuses to allow his soldiers to retreat, growing a massive body count of his own men. In the end, after being forced to retreat, he bullies the troll Throgg and dies in humiliating fashion.
  • The Shining: Jack Torrance, unlike his literary counterpart, is reimagined as a self-centered, abusive father and husband. He views his wife as only being good enough to have his child, and he was also dismissive towards his son Danny. When the hotel starts to corrupt him, Jack destroys the radio to strand his family in the hotel before trying to kill them.
  • Ashigei Shoujo Komura-san: Lulue Hanabira is a rich dancer who becomes the self-proclaimed rival of Komurai Komura. Upon accidentally kicking her foot into Tsukinaga's mouth, Lulue vows to "remove every taste of Komura" from it. As an attempt to learn if Komura had any weaknesses, she holds Tsukinaga hostage threatening to pelt him with tennis balls if he did not disclose them.
  • Poppy: Charlotte was formerly a news reporter who interviewed Poppy before concluding that she could be better than her. Becoming addicted to drugs, she tried to bribe the plant into giving her money to further fuel her habits to the point she neglected and abused her son Child Quin. When asked about her son, Charlotte grows furious and chokes Poppy. Instead of apologizing, Charlotte instead denies the incident, accusing Poppy of being selfish.

Since we're approving entries from The Bible, would Judas Iscariot the traitor count? Whether he was being goaded into it or not, we're obviously supposed to hate the guy. I have admittedly a foggy memory of some parts of the Bible but I don't remember Judas being painted in any sort of positive way...

I can do him next. Though the argument could be made that some of the hate could be misdirected to him because his betrayal played a crucial part in the plan of salvation if you hold those beliefs.

Speaking of which, why aren't the write ups for Jezebel, Delilah, and Shechem not up?

I think Iscariot is going to be a downplayed example at least. I hear the main story does treat him as a sinner, but at the same time, in some versions of the story, he commits suicide out of guilt for betraying Jesus.

Now, it's Sukkot tonight, so I'm gonna effortpost a couple of biblical candidates myself. At this rate, The Bible may need its own subpage.

    open/close all folders
     Overview

What is the work

The Book of Genesis is the earliest part of the shared scriptures of the Jewish and Christian religions before they split off. It tells the story of our forefathers in Mesopotamia and Cana'an, as well as any adversity they encountered.

     The Inhabitants of Sodom

Who are the Inhabitants and what have they done?

The Inhabitants of Sodom are a corrupt society driven by greed, selfishness, and stinginess, having enacted laws prohibiting any acts of charity or hospitality. Upon learning that Lot has invited guests into his home, the hostile Inhabitants demand that the men be brought out to be raped as a punishment for daring to expect hospitality from them.

Various Jewish sources expand on their crimes:

  • Making people who swam across the river pay a higher toll than those who crossed the bridge.
  • Committing assault, and subsequently charging the victim for bloodletting.
  • Burning anyone who showed hospitality at the stake.
  • Covering a woman in honey and having her stung to death by bees or hornets for feeding a homeless person.

What makes them personally despicable?

Based on the fact that hospitality is a major commandment in the Abrahamic Religions, their culture of hostility towards those in need is absolutely deplorable.

Evil Is Cool Traits? Freudian Excuse? Complexity?

There is no nice way of saying this. This deplorable Wretched Hive is probably one of the most disgusting settings in the entire Tanakh. And that INCLUDES Egypt.

It's possible that the founders of the city may have forced their deplorable ideology on the rest of the residents, but it is never explicitly stated to be the case.

In any case, individual Sodomites have gone against the backwards laws, but at great cost, and they are the exception rather than the rule, and are not given any focus in the source text.

Verdict?

Easy keepers.

     Esau

Who is Esau, and what has he done?

Esau and Jacob were twins, but Esau forced himself out first. From there, Esau indulged his base instincts from childhood to adulthood, spending his days hunting, having sex with (or raping) Anything That Moves, robbing people. One day (in the aftermath of Abraham's funeral, according to rabbinical sources) he demands some of the red stuff boiling in the cauldron. Jacob, taken aback by Esau's lack of respect for his surroundings, as well as seeing him as spiritually unworthy, requests the latter's birthright. Figuring he's eventually gonna die anyways, Esau spurns the birthright for a pot of beans.

Later on, Rebecca, knowing Isaac intends to bless Esau, has Jacob take Esau's place, despite the latter's hesitance. When Esau realizes that he has forfeited other blessings that may have been useful to him, he breaks down crying. Rebecca sends Jacob packing, lest Esau tire of waiting for his father to die before making an attempt against Jacob.

Later on, they make an uneasy peace after the deaths of both their parents, but according to rabinnical sources, that doesn't stop Esau from interfering at Jacob's funeral and losing his head for his trouble.

Later on, there is friction with his descendents, including the Edomites and the Amalekites (I'll get to the latter on a rainy day), and Haman the Agagite (remember him?).

What makes him personally despicable?

This is mostly if you take other Jewish sources into account, but his sexually predatory behaviour, and lack of respect for other people, and within the confines of religion, disrespect for God himself. Otherwise, mostly his belligerence towards Jacob.

Evil Is Cool Traits? Freudian Excuse? Complexity?

Esau is a hunter and a warrior, but other than that, he's just an asshole.

Rabbinical literature does explain that a possible reason he sold the spiritual birthright was because he felt unworthy, but he still did so in the most disrespectful way possible.

Say whatever else you want about him, he did care about Isaac.

Verdict?

At the very least, you are not supposed to take his side.

I'll give a slight yes to the Sodomites on the grounds on their being inhospitable. May think more on Esau.

Who is she? What has she done?

Athaliah is commonly disputed as being the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. She would later marry Jehoram as part of a treaty between Israel and Judah (may think on Jehoram since he killed his six brothers to secure his position). Jehoram goes against his father and grandfather's worship of YHWH by encouraging Athaliah's pagan worship of Baal. When he died, Athaliah became the queen mother of Ahaziah. When he was assassinated by Jehu, Athaliah seizes the opportunity and orders all of the possible claimants to the throne executed in a purge including those from her own dynasty. Unfortunately for her, Ahaziah's sister Jehosheba manages to save one of the children — Jehoash — and was raised in secret.

When Athaliah learns that he survived, she attempted to quash the rebellion but is captured and executed.

What makes her despicable?

Mass purging of all of David's descendants, methinks?

Complexity? Mitigating factors? Evil Is Cool?

No to all three.

Eh, not sure, really. Sorry.

I will propose my own candidate instead. He is already a CM, so this should be easy.

What's the work?

Sound of the Sky is a 2010 anime that can basically be described as a military version of K-On!, starring aspiring bugler Private Kanata Sorami as she integrates herself among the all-female 1121st Platoon in the town of Seize.

At first, the series is a wacky Slice of Life show, featuring the girls going on silly misadventures and such. As the show goes on, more backstory is revealed as to the war between Helvetia, the girls' nation, and the enemy Rome. As of the story, peace talks are in the works, and the nations are getting ready to put everything behind them.

But just when the show looks like it has No Antagonist, a feared Helvetian colonel visits the town and begins implementing his Evil Plan to spark war once again...

Who is Colonel Hopkins? What has he done?

Colonel Hopkins is the Big Bad of the series. Often called the Demon of Vingt, Hopkins is a combination of Colonel Kilgore and General Ripper. He loves war, and he wants nothing more than to destroy Rome- to that end, he plots to ruin the peace talks and restart the war between the two nations.

In the backstory, he manipulated Noel Kannagi, one of the main girls of the platoon, into unleashing a plague known as the Invisible Reaper. The result was three cities destroyed and hundreds dead, and Noel herself became known as the Witch of Helvetia, a name that haunts her to this day.

Within the show, Kanata, Noel, and the other girls come across a Roman soldier named A'isha Aldola, and bring her to their home. Hopkins visits the town and makes his appearance because he has orders to capture her. Hopkins, of course, has his own plans- to kill her and blame it on his superiors, hoping that Rome will react by re-declaring war. He and his Mooks take over the platoon and kick the girls out, and he himself mocks them the whole time. When they strike back and capture him, he escapes and, hearing that the Roman Army has ordered a ceasefire, holds the entire town hostage. Finally, he gets in his spider-tank and flat-out attempts to kill the girls. Luckily, the girls have their own spider-tank, and wipe him out through an avalanche, presumably killing him. Then Sergeant Major/Princess Rio Kazumiya, another one of the girls, finalizes the peace, forever ruining Hopkins' dark ambitions.

What makes him personally despicable?

He is a murderous warmonger who wants to spark war between the two nations and shows a willingness to harm and kill innocent girls to achieve this goal. He tricked a girl into leveling three cities and killing hundreds with a bio-weapon, tries to capture and execute a harmless Roman soldier girl to ruin the peace talks, holds the whole city hostage when the ceasefire happens, and finally tries to slaughter the whole damn platoon just for getting in his way. His justification for this is that, in his mind, War Is Glorious and advances human civilization; the work itself, however, has the moral that War Is Hell, and Hopkins' love of war makes him the main villain and Foil to the peace-loving heroines.

Evil Is Cool qualities? Complexity? Freudian Excuse?

He only shows up for the last episode and a half, so he does not have enough time to establish himself as cool or complex, the only reason we are given for his actions is that he is a Sadist and Blood Knight, and his War Is Glorious justification is flimsy. Bottom line, he represents the cruelty of war, and is meant to be despised.

Verdict?

So, now that the Akame entries are down to three, the page should probably be cut and the examples put on the main Anime page.

Why so serious?

I say [tdown]to Esau. Maybe because I don't remember him doing all this stuff in the Bible.

I can't stand by Esau. For starters, his mother and brother legit fucked him out of his birthright in a truly dick move, and his story ends with him making tearful amends with Jacob.

He's not a great guy, but the Bible is full of sketchy people we're not fully intended to hate. Remember Lot? The one good guy in Sodom and Gomorrah? "Don't rape my guests, take my daughters!"

Yeah... gonna go [tdown] on Esau. And headed to Cut List to request page cut for Agame.

So, @Lightysnake, what do you think about Colonel Hopkins? I need one more yes to post my writeup.

[up]Link to Sang post, please?

Also, I actually have a subversion in mind myself. Specifically, Luke Wright from The Letter. For about the first six chapters, he is basically the typical rich, racist white guy asshole, but the seventh chapter has you play as him and shows off his Hidden Depths.

Of course, the story has an entirely straight example as well, so I will EP that character.

No, no subversions. No aversions, no inversions. You count or you don't.
