    World God

Voiced by: Fumihiko Tachiki (Japanese), Barry Yandell (English), Óscar Gómez (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/world_god_anime.png
The wise, benevolent leader of the gods. He was responsible for killing Touya by accident, and sent him to his new world as compensation.
  • The Atoner: The plot began because God accidentally killed Touya. To atone, God resurrected him in a new world, made him The Ace, and is willing to advise Touya whenever needed.
  • Easily Forgiven: Touya casually forgives God for the blunder which costed the former his life.
  • God Is Flawed: The story starts because he killed the protagonist by mistake.
  • God Is Good: Not only does he apologize for killing Touya, he even upgrades his smartphone and gives him magical powers? This God sure is a Nice Guy.
  • God's Hands Are Tied:
    • God explains in the very first scene that there's a rule against sending a dead mortal back to the world they came from and that he himself is bound by it.
    • Later, God says that gods are not allowed to intervene in mortal affairs, unless another god broke that rule first. For example, if an evil god started wrecking havoc, the good gods would directly get involved to stop him. However, if some other Big Bad came along trying to conquer or destroy the world, they wouldn't do anything so long as they're a "resident" of that world (or ANY world). But, there's a catch. Touya, being a demigod, is exempt from that rule.
  • The Gods Must Be Lazy: God admits that he rarely ever looks in on any of the various worlds he governs to see how things are going. If he weren't invested in Touya's second life, he would barely be watching the new world at all.
  • Grandpa God: Is a Japanese version of this, wearing a kimono and a long beard. Whenever he visits the mortal realm, he does so under the guise of Shinnosuke Mochizuki, Touya's grandfather.
  • Have You Seen My God?: He sometimes neglects to check on a world or dimension for millennia, expecting mortals to take care of themselves. After dealing with a corrupt Papacy that had long lost its way due to worship of a false god, Touya asks him to look in a bit more often to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He shows himself to a priestess named Phyllis to set her straight about her false god, Lars. When Phyllis returns to tell the Pope about what she's learned, she's branded a heretic and scheduled to be executed. When Touya rescues her, God appears again and apologizes for the situation, realizing that he just made things worse.
  • So Proud of You: At one point, an angry priest of another religion condemns Touya and insults God. Touya responds by siccing Kohaku on him and saying that while insulting him is fine, no one can ever talk badly about God. God calls him immediately afterward to tell Touya how happy he was to be defended like that.
  • Top God: He is the leader of the gods, and the most powerful of all.

Lesser Gods

    Goddess of Love

Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Jamie Marchi (English), Jahel Morga (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goddess_of_love_anime.png
A goddess whose sphere of expertise is Love. She's currently posing as Karen Mochizuki, Touya's older sister.
  • Cool Big Sis: Introduces herself to the party as Touya's older sister.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Hilda's grandfather, the world's first Gold-class adventurer (the highest level), gets knocked flat on his ass while trying to grope Karen.
  • God Was My Co-Pilot: She assumes the guise of Touya's eldest sister, Karen Mochizuki.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: She's a Love Goddess dressed in a white chiton with gold accessories.
  • Loophole Abuse: Gods aren't allowed to interfere with mortal affairs unless another god breaks that rule first. Karen, in pursuit of said fugitive god, takes the opportunity to live in mortal form for a while, as Touya's sister.
  • Love Goddess: A literal goddess of Love who speaks to Touya and convinces him to accept Elze, Linze, Yae and Yumina as fiances.
  • The Matchmaker: As the Goddess of Love, this is literally her job. But, more specifically, she pulls each girl aside to give them advice on how to woo Touya.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She's an extremely nice and friendly girl, and has soft pink-colored hair.
  • Stunned Silence: She finds herself at a loss for words when Touya unknowingly causes the Fire Spirit to fall in love with him.
  • Super-Empowering: Anyone on good terms with Karen and sufficiently motivated by the Power of Love can tap into her power.
  • Sweet Tooth: And Touya uses it as a restraint to keep her from leaking his secrets.

    Goddess of Swords
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/godofswords.jpg
A goddess whose sphere of expertise is sword mastery. She's currently posing as Moroha Mochizuki, Touya's older sister.
  • Always Someone Better: She's that "someone". As the greatest swordswoman in the world, she runs circles around Yae, Hilda and even Touya.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: The first time she was shown drinking, it easily took her down.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: The moment a battle starts (whether she's participating or not), she can accurately predict who's going to win within a matter of seconds.
  • Cool Big Sis: Like the Goddess of Love, she introduces herself as Touya's big sister. Yae and Hilda absolutely adore her.
  • God in Human Form: She assumes the guise as older sister of Touya and younger sister to Karen, Moroha Mochizuki.
  • Laser Blade: She can channel her divinity through objects to create absurdly sharp blades either by having her divinity extend through a blade's length or making weak unsharp objects sharper than phrasium blades.
  • Master Swordswoman: As expected of a goddess of swords.
  • Mentor Archetype: She takes Yae and Hilda under her wing, seeing great promise in their sword skill. She says Touya has plenty of potential left as well.
  • Super-Empowering: Anyone on good terms with Moroha and sufficiently skilled in swordplay can tap into her power.

    Goddess of Hunting
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goddess_of_hunt_animepng.png
A goddess whose sphere of expertise is hunting. She's currently posing as Karina Mochizuki, Touya's cousin.

    God of Agriculture
A god whose sphere of expertise is agriculture. He's currently posing as Kosuke Mochizuki, Touya's uncle.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/god_of_harvest_animepng.png
  • Bio-Augmentation: Manage to create the Puretree to combat the divine venom.
  • Caring Gardener: Given as the God of agriculture.
  • Cool Uncle: Well, he's posing as one, at least. That said, he's the only other god besides the World God whom Touya feels comfortable asking for advice.
  • Determined Homesteader: In charge of improving the agriculture of Brunhild.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: While he was originally just one of several gods tasked with aiding Touya, he was the one to create the Puretree. Without it, Touya would've had no hope of destroying the Wicked God.

    God of Music
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/music_god.PNG
A god whose sphere of expertise is music. He's currently posing as Sousuke Mochizuki, Touya's cousin.
  • Artists Are Attractive: He is handsome and known to draw large audiences of women.
  • Mundane Utility: The instrument he plays turns out to be a sacred treasure that can morph into different instruments.
  • The Speechless: He doesn't speak, preferring to communicate through his music.

    Goddess of Alcohol
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suika.PNG
A goddess whose sphere of expertise is alcohol. She's currently posing as Suika Mochizuki, Touya's cousin.
  • Alcohol Hic: Often part of her speech.
  • The Alcoholic: She is the Goddess of Alcohol.
  • Drinking Contest: Known to beat grown men in it.
  • Drinking on Duty: Sent to the mortal realm to help Touya but appears to spend all her time drinking, justified saying she's the emotional support mascot.
  • Drunken Glow: 24/7 in this state.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: She will appear in parties as long as there's booze.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Managed to take down a beast in Roadmare, a deed for which the Doge rewards her with rare booze. Touya speculates she may be a Drunken Master.
  • Odd Friendship: Seems to get along with the God of Destruction.
  • The Load: In comparison to all the other gods staying in Brunhild, Touya sees her as this. She does nothing to directly support him, choosing to laze about drinking all day.

    God of Combat
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takeru.PNG
A god whose sphere of expertise is hand-to-hand combat. He's currently posing as Takeru Mochizuki, Touya's uncle.
  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: During her sparring with Moroha.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Zigzagged. While he goes easy on girls that train under him, he's especially hard on guys, as Ende is unfortunate enough to discover.
  • Expy: Of Ryu. Hell, he's pretty much Ryu in all but name. He even teaches Elze and Ende how to pull off a move similar to a Hadouken.
  • Jerkass: After Touya and the girls return from their honeymoon, Touya gifts Suika with a bottle of rare booze from Earth. Takeru appears out of nowhere, snatches the bottle away from her, and chugs the whole thing in one go, telling her not to be greedy when she begs for him to give it back. This is one of the rare instances where Touya actually feels bad for her.
  • Ki Manipulation: Can perform Ki based attacks.
  • Masochist's Meal: When he ate curry he enjoyed powering through the spiciness.
  • Meditating Under a Waterfall: One of his training methods.
  • Physical Fitness Punishment: Ende is his usual target for this when he fails his training goals.

     Goddess of Space-Time
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tokie_5.png
A goddess whose sphere of expertise is the flow of space and time. She's currently posing as Tokie Mochizuki, Touya's grandmother. Like Touya, she's a beneficiary of the World God's divinity.
  • Master of Threads: The Mystical Weaving variety. She's using her powers over space-time to "rewind" the world barrier to protect it from external threats, and the act is described as her weaving the barrier back together thread-by-thread.
  • Relative Error: When Princess Pafia introduced Touya's fiances that came to the rescue of Princess Lefia, Lefia initially thought Tokie was included in Touya's harem.
  • Space Master: Her abilities include Teleportation, barrier creation and Pocket dimension creation.
  • Stable Time Loop: She and her spirit dependents are trying to maintain one of these in regards to the future children being sent to the present day, but the presence of the Wicked Devout threatens its stability due to their divine nature.
  • Time Master: Naturally, as the goddess of it.
  • Tranquil Fury: She calmly threatens to sew the God of Destruction's mouth shut when he mocks her. She also utilizes this to prevent Touya's future children from spoiling major events that have yet to happen.

     God of Flight
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/god_of_flight.png
An avian god whose sphere of expertise is flight.
  • Polly Wants a Microphone: Despite looking like a normal sparrow, he's still a god, and is perfectly capable of holding a conversation.
  • The Navigator: He guided Touya around the Divine realm.
  • Too Hungry to Be Polite: When Touya came up to the Divine Realm to assist Karen with her Ascension, the God of Flight rather messily partakes in some food from the mortal realm, getting his entire face covered in marinara sauce. Justified, since he's a small bird and lacks the means to use silverware.

     God of Strength
A god whose sphere of expertise is physical strength. He's one of the gods who descended to travel the world after Touya's wedding.
  • Lazy Alias: His circus stage name is "Strength".
  • The Strongman: He's currently posing as one in a traveling circus.

     God of Theater
A god whose sphere of expertise is acting. He's one of the gods who descended to travel the world after Touya's wedding.
  • Camp Gay: It's noted that he's similar to Kokuyou in this regard.
  • Lazy Alias: His circus stage name is "Theatro".
  • Master Actor: He's able to completely disappear into whatever role he's playing at the moment.

     God of Destruction
A god whose sphere of expertise is destruction.
  • Almighty Janitor: He's essentially a divine version. His job is to dispose of corrupted worlds that are no longer under the protection of the gods.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Since it's his job, he's very casual and often jokey when it comes to talking about destroying entire worlds and snuffing out countless lives in the process.
  • Destroyer Deity: It's his job to eliminate worlds that either fall out of the World God's influence, or ones that threaten the existence of other worlds. Most often, he simply vaporizes the entire world, leaving nothing but dust.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: A non-parental example. He asks Touya if he'd like to take over his job once he retires. Touya very quickly refuses, as he doesn't think he could bring himself to do what the God of Destruction does.
  • One-Hour Work Week: According to him his position leaves him a lot of freetime, a perk he said to Touya.
  • Someone Has to Do It: He claims that he doesn't particularly enjoy ending so many lives so casually, but he does it anyway since the consequences of not doing it can be so much worse.

Other Gods

     The Servile God (SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/servile_god.png
A servile god who fled to the mortal realm to escape his responsibilities in the divine realm.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Over the course of the series, he takes on many forms, including a golden gourd, an old man, a shining egg, and two separate giant monster forms.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Along with the traitorous Dominant-Class Phrase Yula, who joined with him to destroy Touya's world. Until he was subsequently betrayed by Yula by allowing the Wicked God to devour him, which caused the evil deity to gain a massive power boost, equalling both and him as the biggest threat to Touya during the climatic battle.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: His second-to-last form is insectoid, and is specifically described as resembling a gigantic, heavily-mutated silk moth.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Both him and Yula's deaths in Volume 19 only ended the Phrase invasion and it is still far from over. There's the Wicked Devout's five Generals, the Co-Dragons to the Wicked God before evolving into the new main antagonists of the light novel. Touya and the rest of his allies now have to deal with the religion's generals during the aftermath of the evil deity's destruction. And they are actively continuing their master's Evil Plan.
  • Elemental Powers: In his Wicked God Form, one of his attacks is firing off lasers of raw magical energy that correspond to the six elemental spell types.
  • It's All About Me: He was unhappy with his position as a servile god, and fled to the mortal realm in the hopes of putting Touya's world under his rule.
  • Jerkass Gods: Albeit he wasn't a full god, but he was still a divine entity. He took no issue with the countless innocents whose souls had been consumed in his wicked campaign.
  • Kaiju: In his Wicked God Form. Touya mentions that he's by far the largest thing he's ever seen, being several times larger than the city-sized Gollem of the Witch King.
  • Light Is Not Good: His One-Winged Angel form is made up of rainbow-hued light that is said to resemble the interference patterns on the backs of CDs.
  • Manchild: As he's about to be defeated, he's reduced to full-blown hysterics, practically crying about how unfair his life was.
  • Not Enough to Bury: When he dies, his entire form collapses into rainbow-colored sand that's blown away in the wind.
  • One-Winged Angel: After Touya and the girls defeat his giant bug form, he "sheds" it away, revealing a massive, winged, multi-armed form comprised of rainbow light that bears a striking resemblance to a twisted Frame Gear.
  • Villain Team-Up: He conspired with Yula to take over Touya's world. At least, that's what he thought.
  • Was Once a Man: Originally, his form was that of a skinny old man. After being devoured by the wicked god and absorbing the negativity of countless mortal souls, he became a colossal, hideous, bug-like entity.

     The Mentor God
See the Earth page for tropes pertaining to the Mentor God.

Spirits

     In General
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: One of the ways to get a spirit to listen to you is to simply beat them in a fight.
  • Elemental Embodiment: Whereas the Gods mostly represent concepts, spirits represent naturally-occurring materials and energies, ranging from the broad, such as Fire, Water, and Earth, to the specific, such as storms, zinc, and embers. If it occurs in nature, chances are there's a spirit that represents it.
  • Our Spirits Are Different: Spirits in this setting are the embodiments of natural elements.
    • They have a strict hierarchy, with the Pillar Spirits at the top, Lesser Spirits under them, and the Spirit Dependents at the very bottom. But no matter their rank among their kin, every single spirit is naturally subservient to the divine, as well as whomever holds the title of Celestial Spirit King.
    • They cannot die, and will reincarnate if their current form is destroyed or reaches a certain age. The sole exception to this is Divine Venom, which is able to kill them off for good thanks to its divine nature.
    • The lesser spirits and dependents require the substance they represent as a medium in order to manifest in the mortal plane.
    • They live in the Spirit Plane, a white void where physics don't quite make sense.
    • Different worlds can share the same Spirit Plane, as was the case with Touya's world and the Reverse World.
    • They can be called upon by speaking in Spirit Script, and some will even form contracts with humans who catch their eye. That said, unlike the contracts made with summoned beasts, spirit contracts can be broken at any time if the spirit in question feels like the human is taking advantage of it. Generally, forming a contract with a spirit is seen as a declaration of friendship.
    • Because they're more "tangible" than gods, they are often subjects of worship in various cultures across the world.
    • They are able to reproduce with humans and other human-like races. The offspring of these pairings are naturally gifted in calling upon spirits.
    • Rather bizarrely, they cry red tears.

     The Pillar Spirits
The ones at the top of the spirit hierarchy, and the ones that oversee the driving elemental forces of the world.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Dark Spirit is revealed to have been the same giant monstrosity Touya fought in Ramissh. After he defeated them, they were reborn in the form of a young woman.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: The Fire Spirit was the only Pillar spirit who opposed Touya's authority as a fledgling god. After he defeated her in a duel, she joined his side, and even developed some feelings for him.
  • Elemental Embodiment: They represent the six main magical elements of Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Light, and Dark.
  • The Leader: They're seen as this to the Lesser spirits that make up their element.

     Lesser Spirits
The spirits that represent more specific aspects of nature. Each one falls under one of the six Pillar spirits.
  • Angelic Abomination: Downplayed. The vast majority of them sport human-like appearances, but they can morph their bodies at will, and their tears are colored red.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: In order to secure their cooperation for the incoming world merge event, Touya had to resort to beating the tar out of most of them.
  • Elemental Embodiment: They represent the various specific aspects of the Pillar elements, such as Snow, Iron, Sand, and Flames.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Humorously, most of the spirits that opposed Touya were simply jealous that their beloved Pillar spirits sided with him immediately.

     Spirit Dependents
Small spirits that serve the Lesser and Pillar spirits and help them carry out their duties.
  • Com Mons: The most common types of spirits, as well as the easiest to form contracts with.
  • Elemental Embodiment: Like the higher-tier spirits, their bodies are comprised of their respective elements and require it to manifest.
  • Nature Spirit: They match this interpretation more than the higher spirits. Unlike other spirits, dependents usually take on less humanoid forms. These include Sylphs (small, winged fairy-like beings), Undines (tiny mermaid-like beings), and Salamanders (six-legged lizard-like beings). They also tend to reside in the Mortal Plane over the Spirit Plane.
