My love of obsessively classifying things made me seriously consider creating a thread like this—I even created a kind of sorting algorithm for it... or two—but I'm somewhat glad that I didn't do it myself. Mainly because I'm too cowardly to go about touting my ludicrously geeky theories without having someone else ask me about them, but also because I forgot about it entirely.

That said, here's a rough overview:

In my main work:

Actually it now occurs to me there are 1s and Type 0s in In The Service/A Numbered Existence. They simply don't play much of a role for the most part, they're support structure. (Organized is better than not.) Genya Nakajima is probably the most prominent, since he commands a regiment of 2s and 3s.

-1 : there's a pet cat

0 : the citizens

1 : the military when/if they appear, "stock" participants of the fighting tournaments

2 : Maru and Imoto at the beginning

3 : Seiryu and Byako at 1st, though in the upper levels of "super", Sofu, Annachi

4 : The Demon Royalty ( king, queen and prince ), the prince will move up eventually

5 : Genbu and Ragnarok

6 : Hyo, Aero, Maeko, Aikyo, Mephisto, Shuzaku, Tengeki, Aelfa, Terra and a few others, they don't appear until pretty late in the story but would need subscales because there's huge gaps in-between some of them.

7 : Faust/Izanagi

Jin/Izanami is "above such petty concerns". In the story, reality goes : universes->multiverses->metaverses->xenoverses->omniverses->infinity->????->Izanami. Admittedly that might still count as 7 anyway.

Why not?

-1: Julia, initially.

0: Pretty much everyone not listed here, most notably Rachel.

1: Isaac, Sigmund, Frank.

2: Asayu and Alice — technically Badass Normals with subtle Anti-Magic by way of Enlightenment Superpowers and Insanity Immunity, respectively.

3: Most mages and rephaim.

4: The God King Amu.

5: The Fallen.

6: The Will of the Song, before they let the Eyes and Teeth into their universe.

7: The Eyes and Teeth, though it is bound heavily by its own insanity and inability to comprehend the physical universe without the assistance of its scheming followers, making temporary defeats possible.

Just for fun, since the Super Weight page has been redone since I started this, I'll go again.

In Rogue Power:

0: Not too many of these as characters, but several servants at the Academy.

1: Most of the servants/bodyguards around Andyrm House.

2: Katherine at the beginning; most of the minor Line Powers; the Finleys, who weakly express the Andyrm Line power but are just about all trained military badasses. The heir Philas, as well, who is not a combatant but specializes in...recruiting them.

3: Alexander all throughout; starts out as a fairly low-powered 3 who merely uses it really really well, after powerups later on becomes quite a powerful 3 who can beat up 4s simply by getting the first strike. Katherine later on, once she starts applying her power to combat. The heir and High Lord Haargen both; though they're less impressive than many, they can still manage to beat people just by virtue of their unblockable, nigh-instant knockout-or-kill power. The Rogue Powers other than Gravity.

4: Gravity. His power is limited in range fairly sharply, but it is unlimited in the field strength it can generate; thus, he casually blocks any physical attack, and given time to prepare can deny even the Haargens' psychics. Verges on 5 if he starts doing more exotic things, such as railgunning things around at high fractions of c or creating black holes.

In New Titans:

1: Various thugs and military personnel.

2: Water, initially, when she's being constantly drained of her power. The research-focused sorcerers. Some other magic creatures.

3: Combat-focused sorcerers. Most of the Titans, initially.

4: The Titans, later on. The Sorcerers Overlord.

5: Water, potentially. The entities behind Serenity.

In Manifestation Files:

  • -1: Wisps and some normal Manifestations.
  • 0: Most non-psychics.
  • 1: Most Observers and Manifestations; Book One's Big Bad.
  • 2-3: Most psychics and Primes.
  • 4: The likely end result for my protagonists.
  • 5: The monster I thought of today that could easily destroy every non-mundane being in the setting by its very presence. Only earthly limitations prevent it from being Cosmic Weight.

A bit vague, but I'm only on the first book.

Used to be (when I started the thread) that it used a less detailed five-point scale starting from -1, instead of the current seven-point. The new scale is probably better, but unfortunately it lost a lot of the examples when the changeover happened, and not that many have been redone to the new scale. sad

(Hence why it made sense that I identified Alexander as 'halfway between a 2 and a 3', which is not a coherent single point on the current scale. tongue)

Personally, I like the newer system a lot better then the old one (and replacing the vaguely fan myopic 'work' examples with tropes doesn't hurt either).

Still not sure why people find this kind of thing so appealing, but I'd do it myself out of curiosity... except that I'm not sure how well my current project fits on here, seeing as I'm doing "powers"-free science fiction. Where a character would fall on the list depends more on the technology they have access to then anything in specific about that character.

Okay, I'll redo mine in accordance with the new scale too.

Mythology 101 Cycle:

-1: Iain before combat training, a few servants/slaves

0: Most other servants/slaves; Iain halfway through combat training; Innocent Bystander types; victims of vampires and other monsters; Jessica; William, Carrie, Binky, Nathan, Jane, and Professors Banks and Scott before combat training

1: Iain (fully trained version), Kylie and Jason in the early books; Jim, Andy, Jeff, Mark and Andrew; Professor Flynn; most Whiskey Tango Foxtrot operatives; most human soldiers from both universes, including Red Shirts; William, Carrie, Binky, Nathan, Jane, and Professors Banks and Scott after combat training

2: Nick (otherwise human, but has been reincarnated 429 times); Chris in the early books; werewolves who can't control their transformations yet, including William in book 4; most male Elves; Kim (doesn't age and is immune to fire and electricity damage, but has no actual powers); Ogres and other super-strong, but otherwise not supernaturally inclined creatures; Beth and Clay, the young (and not yet fully trained) psychics from WTF; younger vampires, including Tessa, Gavin, and Jason from book 8 onward

3: Werewolves who have mastered the ability to transform at will; Guillermo (and Chris after he reaches the same level of Psychic Powers); The Execrated; older vampires who still haven't learned how to use magic (Count William III, General Baldasari); Tara in the early books; other young wizards like Fieri who could do with more training; older male Elves and younger female Elves (magic is much stronger in female Elves)

4: Young vampires who know magic (Luchesi, Kylie from book 5 onward); older female Elves (Queen Galina borders on a 5); middle-aged wizards, as well as Tara in the middle books; young/untrained fairies

5: Fully trained wizards (Tara and Zugema in books 9 and 10, Lord Morbaruk all the way through); fairies who are only a couple hundred years old; vampires with full magical training (Baron Devincenzi)

6: The Gods, though they can be defeated and even, under the right circumstances, killed

Music City:

-1: Eugene (yes, that Eugene)

0: Various random citizens of Music City; basically, every Innocent Bystander

1: Mack the Knife; Dani California and her gang (and the cops and security guards they slaughter in Chapter 1); Bobby Brown and Baba O'Reilly

2: Wang Chung, Alice, and other immortals without secondary powers; Frankie Knuckles; Freddie Mercury; Cannibal Corpses; the inhabitants of Thriller

3: Leroy Brown; the Peppermint Tribe; April Wine; the Cowboys From Hell

5: Aqualung, Tarkus, Lacrymosa and the Man in the Long Black Coat

6; The Crimson King, The Green-Eyed Lady, and The Thing That Should Not Be

In the current story I'm writing, my protagonists are all at 2, as they are mages (specifically, a werewolf priest and a dragon-worshipping sun mage). The goal of the story is to upgrade them to 3 by the end, with both of them receiving blessings from their gods as the catalyst for the upgrades.

My "main" villain, who is actually someone else's lackey, is a high 3, just tough enough that even when upgraded the protagonists have trouble killing him. He's further supported by the world's craziest Type 2 and a whole mess of low type 2's and type 1's.

Meanwhile, the vast majority of Gods in the setting are only 4s, though the two biggest gods, Creation and Destruction, are type 6s who are only limited by how hard it is for them to manifest without screwing up reality around them. Once they're in, they're tough. I'd consider them 7s, but they aren't omniscient nor omnipotent (it is theoretically possible to defeat them, though it would not be an issue of raw power but of cleverness).

Still wondering about my issue from above: can Super Weight make sense for a story with no "powers" as such, but differing levels of technology?

In that case, a rough estimate would be something like this:

  • 0: Most people without any sort of combat-focused enhancement.
  • 1: Average soldier/other combat-enhanced individual from Galactic Alliance (or technologically-equivalent civilization).
  • 2: Galactic Alliance tech-standard elite military/special forces. Virtually anyone with precursor-based enhancements.
  • 3: Average cthwui or zùn. A few unique individuals among Galactic Alliance tech-standard civilizations.
  • 4: Precursors. Upper limit as far as anything we'd consider "individuals" goes; while some post-singularity entities are 5s or (in a few cases) 6s, they're effectively more like entire civilizations then individual characters.

In The Service/A Numbered Existence needed a number of .5 weights to correctly stratify everyone, again.

-1: Nobody.

0: Support personnel.

1: Non-mage combat personnel.

1.5: Throttled Combat Cyborgs.

2: Low-tier ground mages.

3: Ground mages, Combat Cyborgs without flight, low-tier flight mages.

3.5: Flight Mages, Combat Cyborgs with flight.

4: Wolkenritter. Hayate Yagami, Nanoha Takamachi, Fate Testarossa.

5. Reinforce, her clones, combat starships.

Night Life didn't require .5s. Go figure.

-1: Nobody.

0: Civilians.

1: ADP foot troopers, most berserk noncombat Boomers, most people outside of their armor including Knight Sabers.

2: Leon McNichol and Daley Wong (they're lucky), 14A suits, the Motoroids, light combat boomers, berserk heavy industry boomers, K-11 and K-12S suits.

3: Hardsuited Knight Sabers, 12Z suits, heavy combat boomers.

4: Sanderson's 12Z with Particle Beam Targeting Array, hardsuited Knight Saber with Heavy Motoroid.
