Luke: You...represent destruction and oblivion. What have you done besides destroying planets and killing billions? The dark side represents the end of life, which we all cannot avoid, but you only draw power from part of the cycle of life. That makes you the weak one...
Palpatine: You call me weak, when you are like this?...
Leia: He is right. You're the one who is weak. I don’t know how you lived, but you will never know love or friendship. And I feel sorry for you.
Palpatine: Your attachments made you the weak one, Leia Organa. I have none, and I am limited by nothing that will hold me back...Family...Attachments...if only you knew the potential of having none of them, you would have gone so far. Shame.
Balancing of the Force: Volume 1, before Palpatine tries to torture Luke and Leia to death with Force Lightning

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...fans wrote their own takes on the worst the galaxy had to offer, whether canon or original.

  • What if Darth Vitiate Returned During the Clone Wars (link): Vitiate kills the billions of people on Ryloth right after he appears in the Clone Wars timeline, an action which shocks Count Dooku himself. Vitiate kills both Mace Windu and Dooku, destroys their armies, and sends his forces to purge many planets of life across the Outer Rim. Vitiate plans to continue his slaughter until he burns the galaxy to the ground, and tries to kill his attacking enemies on Korriban when they attempt to stop him.
  • What If Mace Windu KILLED Count Dooku on Geonosis (link): General Grievous takes control of the Separatists after Count Dooku's death and betrays Sidious. Grievous uses Malevolence to destroy any opposition, thrilling in the sense of victory it gives him. When the Republic starts winning the Battle of Cato Neimodia, Grievous tries to escape before encountering Anakin Skywalker and attempting to kill him.
  • What If Anakin, Obi Wan, and Padme Were KILLED on Geonosis (link): Palpatine, after learning of Anakin's death, tortures Dooku with Force Lightning before changing his plans and using the Jedi's poor performance in the Battle of Geonosis as a justification to have them put under command of Clone generals during the Clone Wars. Palpatine has Duchess Satine assassinated and her homeworld of Mandalore almost completely destroyed by Separatists before it is saved by the Republic and neutral systems united by Satine are brought under his control. Palpatine continues to sabotage attempts at peace talks, including assassinating Yoda, Oppo Rancisis, and Ashoka, framing the Jedi as warmongers and executing Order 66. Palpatine prolongs the Clone Wars for five years before declaring himself Emperor and ordering Darth Maul and Savage Opress to kill Dooku and the Separatist council. He has Maul and Savage kidnap Force-sensitive children across the galaxy in order to turn them into a Dark Side army which will hunt down threats to his rule, taking Ezra Bridger and Mara Jade as his apprentices. After getting rid of Maul and Savage as well, Palpatine uses transfer essence to achieve immortality and rule the galaxy forever.
  • What If Darth Sidious SECRETLY Cloned Anakin Skywalker (link): Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, has a vision of Anakin's body being severely damaged and orders him cloned as a back-up plan in case he doesn't prove powerful enough to be of use to him. Palpatine fills Mount Tantiss with clones of Anakin, having Jedi who survive The Purge captured and used to help cultivating working Force-sensitive clones. To keep the clones secret from Vader, Palpatine has the latter help to enslave species across the galaxy. Years after the formation of the Empire, Palpatine has one clone face Vader on Thyferra, torturing and gaslighting him after he wins. He has three working clones brought to Exegol, where he prepares the Imperial fleet in case he needs to establish dominion of the galaxy by brute force, and trains the clones in lightsaber combat until he has them fight to the death. After Vader loses a battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Palpatine sends a clone who survived the battle on Exegol to face Vader, before killing him personally. Palpatine continues with cloning, planning to create an army of clones with the same strength in the Force as Anakin in order to drain them all and become the Force god. Palpatine sends clone Anakin to destroy the Rebels and kill Luke and Obi-Wan, before spending years preparing for a ritual to drain clones. When clone Anakin fulfills his mission, Palpatine summons him to Exegol to be the first clone to be drained for his ritual.
  • What If Sidious Saved the Younglings from Order 66 (link): Darth Sidious turns Anakin Skywalker to his side and orders the extermination of the adult Jedi while planning to turn the younglings and surviving Padawans into his Dark Side army. Sidious has them watch as he kills Yoda before sending them all to the Sith temple on Krayiss II. Sidious declares himself Emperor of the Galaxy and uses Anakin to destroy all who dare to rise up against him, while raising his army in The Dark Side by having them massacre innocents across the galaxy. Sidious manipulates Anakin and his wife Padmé into turning against each other while corrupting their children to evil, resulting in nine-year-old Leia pushing her friend to her death when they had a disagreement. Sidious has his Sith army fight among themselves so only the strongest will remain, taking surviving losers and the bodies of dead ones to be experimented on in Sidious's quest for immortality. Sidious sends Anakin to kill Obi-Wan and Ahsoka while inducting his children into his Sith army. Sidious eventually orders Anakin to get rid of the last opposition to his rule, Padmé included, while using it to turn Luke and Leia against their father. Sidious fully takes Anakin as his apprentice after he kills the twins, successfully attains immortality, and rules the galaxy with the new Sith Empire forever.
  • What If the Younglings Saved Anakin Skywalker During Order 66 (link): Palpatine, aka (Darth) Sidious, launches Order 66. When Anakin finds himself unable to kill the younglings at the Jedi Temple—and realizes Palpatine tried several times to have Padmé killed, he confronts Palpatine and faces him in a lightsaber duel. However, Palpatine is much stronger, and easily overcomes Anakin, wounding the latter. Palpatine eventually will kill Anakin, but not before conquering the galaxy, killing Padmé, and raising their son to be Sidious's servant. In addition, Palpatine plans to give the Jedi Temple survivors hope—having them become Sith—before killing them.
  • What If Sidious Captured Ahsoka & Ezra in the World Between Worlds (link): Darth Sidious, also known as Emperor Palpatine, uses Ahsoka Tano and Ezra Bridger to enter the World Between Worlds and see the future. Letting Ezra go to test the predictions of the World Between Worlds, Sidious keeps Ahsoka prisoner and uses her to access it while keeping her in constant agony. Sidious manipulates the situation so that the Rebel Alliance would fail to destroy the Death Star and Princess Leia would be killed by Darth Vader, before sending him to destroy the remaining rebels and kill Luke and Ob-Wan in the process. As the Force creates multiple new Chosen Ones to fight against him, Sidious has them all either killed, at one point killing every first-born child in a city to get to his target, or using enslaved to serve him. Sidious has his granddaughter Rey captured and raised to be his new body after killing her parents, creating more clone children so he could eventually possess their offspring. Sidious faces Vader and reveals to him that he is responsible for the death of his children after defeating him, before killing both him and Ahsoka. Sidious uses Ray to access the World Between Worlds and uses it to rule the galaxy forever.
  • What If Pong Krell Survived & Joined Darth Vader (link): Pong Krell survives his canon death and somehow becomes even worse than he already was. Masterminding the Umbaran Clone Trooper massacre, Krell escapes justice by slaughtering his way through their ranks and leaving few survivors. Travelling the galaxy and killing Jedi to increase his knowledge and strength, Krell throws in with the rising Galactic Empire and becomes one of Emperor Palpatine's Co-Dragons alongside Darth Vader. The worse of the two villains, Krell uses his power to enslave and decimate vast portions of the Outer Rim, keeping his mass slavery plots hidden from Vader. When his ambition grows insatiable, Krell convinces Vader to betray and kill the Emperor by destroying Coruscant's capital city with orbital bombardment. Krell then personally leads the annihilation of the Rebel Alliance, gleefully trapping its many members on a planet so they can be hunted down one-by-one and secure Krell's new role as Emperor.

Immediately killing Palpatine for his betrayal, Plagueis faces the Jedi Council and drains their powers before killing them and everybody who gets in his way, including council members who were off-planet at the time. Plagueis causes an earthquake that destroys the Jedi Temple before going to activate a Sith shrine hidden beneath it. When Anakin briefly resurfaces after seeing Padmé, Plagueis utterly destroys Anakin's essence before killing Padmé and activating the shrine, killing everybody on Coruscant. Plagueis kills the Separatist leadership and ends the Clone Wars, blaming both them and the destruction of Coruscant on the Jedi and branding surviving Jedi and anybody who helps them fugitives. He declares himself Emperor of the Galaxy and threatens any world which rebels with the same fate as Coruscant, cementing his rule as the Sith Emperor.

  • Die Anatomie Der Macht (The Anatomy of the Force) (link) (Primarily based on Jude Watson's novels, with a few elements from The Clone Wars): Joylin, the tyrannical ruler of Romin, stands in stark contrast to the relatively sympathetic Jenna Zan Arbor. Posing as a freedom fighter, Joylin starts abusing and starving his people and executing his political rivals once he takes over. He also continues the practice of his predecessor, Teda, of being paid to provide shelter to dangerous criminals. Despising the poor people and wishing to wipe them all out, Joylin has Trexin steal a couple of viruses from Jenna in order to make a stronger virus from them which kills his victims by slowly decomposing their bodies, with Joylin planning to use this virus to kill billions of his subjects. Joylin later betrays Trexin—only 16 years old—and attempts to give him to the sadistic Dr. Tennbon for her deranged experiments, a fate he has condemned countless others to. Later, Joylin starts launching rockets, destroying huge parts of the capital and killing countless people. During this bombardment, Joylin mocks Jenna over her inability to save the people and over the fact that there are many kids who have died, taking sadistic pleasure in her suffering and planning to kill her after he has finished exterminating his own people.
  • Balancing of the Force: Volume 1: (link): Emperor Palpatine retains most of his canon crimes and goes beyond them. Wanting to live forever, in one way or another, Palpatine used a Force-sensitive concubine from Naboo to produce a daughter to inherit his Empire. Palpatine coldly dismisses the mother’s death and has Snoke subject his daughter to torturous training to mold her into a Sith. Stationing the incomplete second Death Star above Kashyyyk, Palpatine leaks its location to the Rebels, planning to lure them to their destruction before using the Death Star to blow up Kashyyyk. Palpatine has his army terrorise Kashyyyk and massacre the Wookies, broadcasting the bloodshed across the galaxy to lure the Rebellion. When Ahsoka and Luke are captured by Vader, Palpatine tries to have them fight his acolytes Mara and Lumiya to the death, forcing his daughter to watch and see the power of The Dark Side. When their allies intervene, Palpatine personally kills Yoda and tries to have the Skywalker twins kill their father, before trying to kill both of them himself.
  • Heart of a Jedi (link): Prince Xizor is the heir of the planet Falleen and the leader of the Black Sun syndicate. Working with Governor Tarkin and Admiral Daala, Xizor raids planets across the galaxy for slaves whom he has work on Despayre to build the planet-destroying Death Star, with many dying over the course of two decades. After Tarkin is elected president of the Republic thanks to Xizor's backing, Xizor has him declare war on the Corporate Sector in order to destroy Urdur because Han Solo, who once stopped his slave shipments, married the daughter of the planet's Governor. Xizor has the newly-completed Death Star destroy Despayre and kill all the slaves and guards still on it, before taking it to Urdur. He uses his pheromones to force Daala into having sex with him, before destroying Urdur and having Tarkin declare himself dictator of the galaxy. Xizor betrays and kills Tarkin after having him threaten to destroy Roonadan, presenting himself as the hero while planning to use the Death Star to keep control of the galaxy. When Daala attempts to betray him, Xizor reveals he was working with her daughter Shira and helped her learn the ways of the Sith. After Shira kills her mother, Xizor sends her to Coruscant to deal with the Jedi and eliminate any threats to his rule.

Palpatine has countless children kidnapped and brainwashed into his Inquisitors, uncaring about the many who die during the training on missions. When Luke hesitates to execute a Rebel spy, Palpatine has him tortured with Force Lightning, punishment which he is ready to give to all his subordinates for the smallest of reasons. Palpatine plans to create the Death Star and threaten with destruction any planet which shows signs of disobedience, causing the disgusted Skywalker twins to defect to the Rebellion. Palpatine has Luke captured and tortured for weeks in an attempt to break him, even implanting in his head memories of his father torturing him. When the Rebellion frees Galen Erso and steals the Death Star plans, Palpatine orders its crew to destroy Naboo to spite the Rebellion's leader, Padmé Amidala, by destroying both her and his own homeworld. Eventually, Palpatine plots to lure an entire Rebel fleet into a trap on the Coruscant, with the intention of destroying them all and either breaking Luke and Leia back into his servants or killing them.

Palpatine drains captive Force-sensitives of their blood to inject it in Boba and train him as his new apprentice, Darth Kain. Palpatine sends Kain to destroy the Rebel base on Yavin 4, ordering his spy to be abandoned when she blows her cover. Palpatine starts planning to turn Luke and Vader to his side and orders Kain to capture their friends so they can be tortured and used as bait. Palpatine captures the crew of the Millennium Falcon by threatening Cloud City and gives Han Solo to be delivered to Jabba the Hutt. • Saga of the Skywalkers - A Fantasy Retelling:
    • Emperor Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, is the ultimate source of evil in the story. Under his guise as a Senator of the Grand Republic, Palpatine organises the invasion of his own homeland of Naboo in order to become Supreme Chancellor. He kicks off a bloody world-wide war and eventually manipulates Anakin Skywalker to his side by promising him power to save his wife Padmé. Palpatine has almost all Jedi killed while reforming the Republic into the Empire under his rule. After Anakin is nearly killed, Palpatine uses his powers to transfer Padmé's life essence to him, killing her in the process. Palpatine spreads his tyranny and terror across the world, ultimately building the Death Star, a flying fortress that can destroy whole countries. After Vader's son Luke destroys the Death Star, Palpatine plans to turn him to the Dark Side. He has the whole Rebellion lured to the site of the rebuilt Death Star and tries to make Luke kill his father, ordering the Death Star's crew to destroy Endor if the Rebels gain the upper hand. Seemingly killed by a redeemed Anakin, Palpatine's spirit survives, and creates a homonculi named Snoke and has him corrupt Han and Leia's son Ben, and builds a new empire to terrorise the world. Ready to announce his return, Palpatine unveils a fleet with the power to destroy whole nations. He threatens destruction to anybody who refuses his new rule and tries to possess his granddaughter Rey, whose parents he had murdered.
    • Rogue One & A New Hope: Grand Moff Tarkin is the Imperial officer whose doctrine aided in the creation of the Death Star. After sanctioning the destruction of the Holy City in Jedha and its surrounding settlements, Tarkin takes control of the Death Star from his rival Krennic. He uses it to destroy a facility on Scariff, killing all Rebels there as well as countless Imperials. After Princess Leia is captured, Tarkin has Vader torture her before threatening to use the Death Star on Alderaan if she doesn't reveal the location of the Rebel base. When Leia seemingly gives him the location, Tarkin has the Death Star destroy Alderaan anyway before ordering Leia to be killed. After letting the Millennium Falcon escape so they can track it to the Rebel base, Tarkin prepares to destroy Yavin, thinking only about the drink he will have after the Rebellion is completely destroyed.
  • A Single Decision:
    • Sheev Palpatine, also known as the Darth Sidious, is the ultimate instigator of the Clone Wars. In the past, Palpatine had Nute Gunray invade Palpatine's homeworld of Naboo, using the sympathy garnered to become a Supreme Chancellor of the Republic. Seducing the disillusioned Count Dooku to the Dark Side, Sidious uses him and the Confederacy of Independent Systems to throw the galaxy into a bloody war. Having Jedi take control of the clone army, Palpatine ultimately planned to have the Jedi destroyed and turn the Republic into an Empire. Staging his own kidnapping while having the Confederacy attack Coruscant, Palpatine manipulates Anakin into killing Dooku, having planned to turn Anakin to the Dark Side.
    • Wilhuff Tarkin started as a member of Palpatine's inner circle before coming into his own after the latter's death. Manipulating his way into becoming a Senator, Tarkin uses his influence to sacrifice both the Mynator sector and the 12th Fleet to the Confederacy, prolonging the war for years and using the losses to have Mas Amedda removed from power. Now Chancellor, Tarkin continues the war, notably pushing for much faster construction of the Death Star and giving a huge region of the space to the Hutts to secure an alliance with them. Tarkin founds the Knights of the Republic, a faction of the Force users loyal only to him. Searching for an alternative to the super laser, Tarkin recruits Darth Maul and has him open the ancient Sith holocron. The holocron leads to Tarkin discovering a mystical flower which can provide power equal to the super laser in exchange for the life force of millions of beings. Tarkin plans to feed the flower with the "undesirables" of the galaxy and use it to destroy the Confederacy's capital Raxus, using fear to win the war and rule the galaxy.
  • Sith Hero (link): Sheev Palpatine becomes aware of Anakin Skywalker and sends Darth Maul to kidnap him. After Maul is killed, Palpatine kills Qui-Gon Jinn and Anakin's mother Shmi, before taking Anakin under the pretense of being his father. Palpatine spends years training Anakin in the ways of the Sith, regularly torturing him with Force Lightning. Starting the Clone Wars in order to take power and destroy the Jedi, Palpatine has Anakin serve as the general of the Republic in order to improve public opinion about the Sith. Learning that Anakin accidentally got General Grievous killed, Palpatine has him punished with Force Lightning.

    Films
  • Darth Vader: Hero of Naboo: Darth Sidious, better known as Senator Palpatine, is a monster even by the standards of the Sith. Outraged by the appearance of Darth Vader, Sidious tortures Darth Maul to death with Force Lightning for bringing him the news that Vader knows his identity, rationalizing that Darth Plagueis can resurrect Maul. Believing Plagueis trained Vader to replace him, Sidious attempts to murder Plagueis when he thinks the latter is distracted. Upon Vader tearing away the Veil of the Dark Side, Sidious floods the minds of the Jedi with horrifying visions, while at the same time slaughtering a group of Jedi who left the Temple, even torturing Sar Labooda to death in order to make her sister Depa Billaba feel the pain as well. When cornered by Vader and several Jedi Masters, Sidious uses many dirty tricks to try to kill them, culminating in him unleashing a Force Storm capable of destroying a tenth of Coruscant and killing hundreds of billions, simply to ensure that Vader dies with him.
  • Invocation (link): Devil is the evil Ethereal of Death dedicated to bringing Hell on Earth. He created the Knights of Ren to be his servants in spreading death and destruction across the world, constantly using his powers to torture their minds in order to keep them obedient. After being defeated by the combined efforts of the Ethereals and the defected Knights of Ren, Devil is eventually freed by his servants and possesses the body of one of his Knights. He sets demons to spread death and chaos across the world, killing thousands and causing natural disasters, while he personally kills and collects the skulls of his treacherous minions. Devil plans to marry Rey so he can use their combined power to rule the world, threatening Kylo Ren's life to break Rey's spirit before trying to kill Kylo anyway.
  • Point of Divergence (link): Darth Sidious is just as evil as he is in both canon and Legends. After being ousted as the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic by Anakin Skywalker and Mace Windu, Palpatine assumes control of the Confederacy of Independent Systems and makes Asajj Ventress his new apprentice, giving her the title of Darth Virosa and ordering her to kidnap the Skywalker twins. Sucessful in capturing Luke, Sidious pretends to be Luke's father and trains Luke as another apprentice. Under his leadership, the Separatists invade Kashyyyk and enslave the Wookie population to build the Death Star, with Sidious resorting to increasingly brutal tactics, such as the use of chemical and biological weapons. 19 years following his ouster, he destroys the planet of Corellia using the Death Star and subsequently orders an attack on Coruscant. After Leia sneaks aboard the Death Star with Anakin's strike force, Palpatine goads Leia into striking down Luke to convert her to the Dark Side. When Luke defeats Leia and refuses to kill her, Sidious tries to kill her himself using force lightning, and would have succeeded had it not been for Anakin's intervention.
  • REDONE: Sheev Palpatine is just as evil as he was in the original films. He orchestrates the invasion of Alderaan; the assassination of Chancellor Organa so he can become Chancellor of the Republic; and the Clone Wars themselves so he can achieve supreme power over the Galaxy. He manipulates Anakin and Padmé into joining his side. When Padmé is injured fighting Mace Windu and Anakin is injured on Mustafar, he takes Anakin to a rehab center while he steals Padmé's life force, and when Anakin awakes as Darth Vader, Palpatine claims that the Jedi killed Padmé. Palpatine later teams up with Jabba the Hutt to enslave Kashyyyk and plans to use the Sun Crusher to destroy the Rebellion. A sinister, uncaring, and despotic Sith Lord, Palpatine still remains an utter monster.
  • What if Palpatine killed Rey and Ben on Exegol? (link): Palpatine fatally electrocutes his own granddaughter, Rey, along with Ben Solo, before wiping out the whole Resistance. He conquers the galaxy, destroying any star system that opposes him. As Emperor, Palpatine kills or enslaves entire species if he deems them unworthy to exist, and enacts a cleansing of anyone who disagrees with his rule, with many worlds purged. He creates a cult which preaches complete devotion to himself and makes the practice of any other religion punishable by death. When he is not ruling, Palpatine kidnaps many Force-sensitive children and infants to turn to the Dark Side, and conducts experiments to reshape reality to his will.
