Fanfic / Saga of the Skywalkers - A Fantasy Retelling

Go To

Saga Of Skywalkers - A Fantasy Retelling is a series of Star Wars fanfics by Silas Kaiser on FanFiction.Net. It retells the story of the Skywalker Saga (and Rogue One) in a more standard High Fantasy setting.

Whole series is awailable here.

Tropes in this series include:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Allegiant General Pryde debuts in the epilogue of The Last Jedi, rather than in The Rise of Skywalker like in the movies.
  • Adaptational Expansion: While the fics mostly retell the movies, occasionally there are additional scenes like Yularen suggesting letting the rebels escape to lead his forces back to the rebels' base. The narration also frequently provides more worldbuilding and character information than the movies did.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Unlike in The Rise of Skywalker, where Hux's betrayal was motivated purely by his spite towards Kylo, here he genuinely believes in the First Order’s proclaimed mission to bring order to the world and hates how Kylo has turned the Order into his personal army. In the end he survives execution and goes into hiding to live a new life, save for friendly visits from Poe.
  • Adaptational Name Change:
    • Droids are renamed Automata and their written names are changed from letters and numbers to matching pronunciation (R2-D2 and C-3PO are called Artu Deeto and See Threepio for example).
    • The Clone army becomes the Homunculi army.
    • The Galactic Empire becomes the Pangaeic Empire.
    • Lightsabers are called Lightblades.
    • The Clone Wars are called the Great War.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Rose accompanies Rey, Finn and Poe in their search for the map to Exegol in this version.
    • In A New Hope Wullf Yularen was just a minor character at the meeting on the Death Star, while in the retelling he gets a few additional scenes, including being the one who comes up with a plan to let the rebels escape so his forces could track them to their base.
  • Big Bad: Emperor Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious. Everything bad from the Great War to the rise of the First Order can be traced back to him.
  • Canon Foreigner:
    • Charami, Cassian Andor’s messenger pigeon who is created for the Rogue One fic.
    • Red Five, Luke’s archwing who fulfils the role of his ship from the movies.
  • Dragon Rider: Instead of fighter ships, the characters ride reptilian creatures. In Coruscant they are even used as a regular mode of transportation.
  • False Flag Operation: Palpatine’s plot to take over the Grand Republic and destroy the Jedi from the inside involves starting the World War.
  • Genre Shift: the original Skywalker Saga is a space fantasy. Saga of Skywalkers is a straight fantasy retelling with a good dash of Science Fantasy.
  • Ignored Epiphany: When strangling Padme after she comforts him in Mustafar, Anakin briefly realises that despite turning to the Dark Side and helping to destroy the Jedi to save her life, he was killing her himself, only to blame it all on Obi Wan for “turning her against him” a few seconds later.
  • Magic by Any Other Name: The Force is just like in the movies, only it is even more pronounced because of the presence of magic not called The Force.
  • Magitek: Most of the post-medieval tech is powered by magic.
  • One World Order: Downplayed. While the Grand Republic and its succesor states do cover much of the planet, there are still countries and lands that exist independently of them.
  • Mythology Gag: While they are primarily adaptations of the movies, the fics frequently reference events from the Expanded Universe.
    • When questioning his allegiance to the Jedi Order after being ordered to spy on Palpatine, Anakin briefly reminisces about how they once lied to him about Obi Wan’s death and how Ashoka left. Later when Anakin leads 501 Legions to attack the Jedi temple, the narration briefly mentions that half of it is in Mandalore with Ashoka.
    • When wandering in the ruined Jedi Temple, Obi Wan and Yoda can’t find Jocasta Nu’s body. This prompts Yoda to briefly wonder if she survived, before deciding they have more pressing matters to worry about.
    • As the badly burned Anakin is put into the iconic Vader suit, artificer Cylo handles his transformation in his workshop.
    • During the introduction of Jakku, the narration mentions it was the site of the final battle between the New Republic and the Empire led by Admiral Gallius Rax.
  • Science Fantasy: While more on the fantasy side than canon, the fics still feature advanced technology like Automata and Magitek which gives the Empire and the Republic 'a semi futuristic look.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Ben survives the final battle with Palpatine and helps Rey to train a new generation of Jedi rather than dying when using Force Heal to bring Rey back to life.
    • Hux survives his execution for betrayal unlike in the movies and goes into hiding to live a peaceful life.
