    Characters from the Cartoon

The Evergreens

  • Beary Friendly: They're a family of bears and, like most Sylvanians, are extremely welcoming and friendly.
  • Gadgeteer Genius; Though a kid, Preston Evergreen has a history of building a lot of surprisingly effective contraptions and vehicles.

The Babblebrooks

The Thistlethorns

The Chestnuts

General

  • Adapted Out: In the toyline, the Chestnuts had three baby children, Amy Ricky & Molly. In the cartoon, they only have two whose names are changed as well.

Hoss & Charity

The Wildwoods

The Slydales

General

  • Adaptational Villainy: While Buster was descirbed as somewhat of a troublemaker in the toyline, it was usually just minor pranks and the rest of the family weren't depicted as being particularly antagonistic. In the cartoon, the whole family (sans the babies) ranges from being rotten jerks to outright criminals, even going so far as to work with Packbat, someone who desires to either enslave or wipe out the Sylvanians.
  • Cunning Like a Fox: They're a family of foxes and they've kept a decent track record of playing the rest of the Sylvanians for fools.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Sometimed they assist Packbat in his schemes, sometimes they help the other Sylvanians deal with whatever problems they're facing.
  • Lower-Class Lout: Impiled. In contrast to the nice-looking houses of the other Sylvanian families, the Slydale abode is a rundown shack. A lot of schemes in general involve trying to elevate their social standing, wheather it be through Slick becoming mayor or gaining property such as the Timbertop farm.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Slick and Velvette came to the realization that sabotaging the town doctor wasn't a good idea when their infant son Skitter accidentally ate a poisonous toadstool. Luckily, Dr. Evergreen was able quickly administer an antidote.
  • Token Evil Teammate: They tend to be this for the other Sylvanian Families, though they have their occassional Pet the Dog moments.

Slick Slydale

  • Henpecked Husband: Slick Slydale is clever and charismatic, but he tends to be talked over and domineered by his wife, Velvette.

Velvette Slydale

  • Almighty Mom: Velvette Slydale may be a rare antagonistic example. She tends to make it quite clear she's in charge of the Slydale Family. And her domineering and extremely assertive personality has been known sometimes to intimidate the other Sylvanians or even Packbat and Gatorpossum.

Buster Slydale

  • The Bully: Buster is a sterotypical, thuggish bully. He even states that his favourite sport is "pounding wimpy wise guys in the carrot burger patties".

Scarlett Slydale

Skitter and Lindy Slydale

  • Token Good Teammate: It really says something when the babies of the Slydale Family are somewhat mischievous at worse, but are otherwise the nicest members of the family.

The Timbertops

The Waters

Packbat

  • The Ageless:"Founders Keepers" reveals that both he & Gatorpossum were around when the Sylvanian elders (and the Woodkeeper) were their grandchildren's age and neither seemed to have aged physically.
  • Bat Out of Hell / You Dirty Rat!!: Part rat, part bat, all nasty.
  • Big Bad: He's the primary villain of the 80's cartoon and one that both the Slydales and Gatorpossum defer to when they're not working their own schemes.
  • Fantastic Racism: Hates the Sylvanians with a passion, frequently calling them "Silly-vanians" and is often plotting to either enslave or wipe them out. He seems to make an expection for the Slydales who ocassionally help him in his schemes. Even then, its impiled he seems them as little more than pawns.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Often calls the Sylvanians "Silly-vanians".
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Packbat appears to be some hybrid of a rat and bat.

Gatorpossum

  • Accidental Misnaming: He can never get Packbat's name right, much to the latter's annoyance.
  • The Ageless: Both he and his master were around when the Sylvanian elders were their grandchildren's age and neither seemed to have aged physically.
  • The Brute: He's a big oaf who often isn't above threatening to overpower any Sylvanians or human kids if he thinks it can get him what he wants.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Briefly uses the "Sufferin Sylvanius" exclamation commonly uttered by his Sylvanian prey in "Cooking Up Trouble"
  • Child Eater: He constantly tries to catch and eat the Sylvanian children, including babies. Though its impiled he'll eat adults too (fortunatly, he's not successful in either).
    • Zig-zagged with the human children. In most episodes, he ignores them in favour of the Sylvanians, even stating on a couple of occasions to not like the taste of humans. In some, he pursues them just as much as he does the Sylvaniansnote .
  • Dumb Muscle: He's physically strong enough to easily overpower most of the cast, which is why the Sylvanians typically defeat him by outsmarting him.
  • Fantastic Racism:Like his master, he hates anything Sylvanian and sees them as little more than prey.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters:Is a hybrid of a an alligator & an opossum (though the alligator side is the most prominent).
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile:Is partially an alligator and is a carnivorous monster who wants to eat the Sylvanians and works as a minion of Packbat.

The Woodkeeper

  • All-Loving Hero: He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, even in his younger days when he was helping the Sylvanians find a new home in what would become the Sylvanian Forest. When Packbat tried to shoo them away, the young Woodkeeper's first reaction was to try to talk Packbat into co-exisiting with the Sylvanians seeking refuge.
  • Gate Guardian: He took up the job of guarding the magic door leading to the Sylvanian forest after helping the Sylvanians settle there. It's implied he's the one who magically transports (through their dreams) whichever human kids he thinks would benefit most from a visit to the forest.

Human Visitors

  • Arc Hero: In every episode, a different human child is brought to the forest to interact with the Sylvanians in various ways. Sometimes to help the latter group with a problem they're already facing, sometimes to help fix a problem the visitor themself accidently caused, or sometimes they get put in a bid and end up having to be rescued by the Sylvanians.
  • Baby Of The Bunch: zig-zagged, some of the human visitors tend to be younger (4 years old at the youngest) than the Sylvanian adolescent children, who in the cartoon are implied to be at least around ten years old. Sometimes the Sylvanian kids will dote on or help look after the younger human visitors and other times they may avoid holding any seniority over them and treat them like equal friends.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: Downplayed, the visitors on the outside are still sleeping normal hours. In the Sylvanian Forest, however, their visits can last hours at least or days at most. The fact every visitor leaves satisfied by the end of every episode implies they can technically stay as long as they like.
  • Token Human: For each episode, of course.

    Characters from the OVA

Milk Usagi-chan / Rebecca Periwinkle / Rebecca Sweetpea

Voiced by: Tomoko Kawakami (2007 OVA)

The second oldest of the Periwinkle siblingsnote , Rebecca is a white rabbit who is very gentle to her friends. However she is a hard time for everyone sometimes as she takes on a leadership role. She is also very forgiving to others.

  • Cool Big Sis‎: To Oliver.
  • Determinator: She's this to the other kids.
  • Demoted to Extra: Due to the focus of the Franchise shifting to the Chocolate Rabbit family in The New '10s, her appearances in the 2017 OVAs and 2018 shorts has been reduced to a minor recurring role. Indeed, in one recent ad advertising a musical ballet building, Rebecca appears as a backup dancer with Freya taking the role of the star of the show!
  • Girly Girl: In contrast with the boys in the group.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: An interesting take of this trope. She quickly believed Buster's lies that he won't play tricks on others anymore. Well she herself got tricked in the end.
  • The Heart / The Leader
  • The Heroine: Of the three 2007 OVAs
  • Mascot: The previous mascot of the franchise, from 2000 to 2010.
  • Mighty Whitey
  • Parents as People: Her parents cares about her so much and talks to her and her little brother during dinner time.
  • Retcon: Her status of being eldest of the family got retconned away in 2018, with the sudden introduction of a toy set of her older sister Catherine.
  • White Bunny

Chocolate Usagi No On'na No Ko (Chocolate Usagi-chan) / Freya Chocolate / Bell Hopscotch

Atsumi Tanezaki (Japan 2017-), Stephanie Sheh (US 2017-), Georgie Fuller (International 2017-)

With the advent of the 2017 OVAs, the focus shifted from the Milk Rabbit family to the Chocolate Rabbit family. Freya is the second oldest in the family, the oldest being Stella who has left home to start a life in the nearby town.
  • Ascended Extra: Toys of the Chocolate Rabbit family existed before the 2017 OVAs, but the focus of the earlier OVAs are of the Milk Rabbit family.
  • Cheerful Child
  • Cool Big Sis: To Grace.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: As shown in a recent animated short, she is perfectly capable of cooking, but if left unsupervised she will start putting ingredients that are not in the recipe, into her cooking.
  • Girly Girl: In contrast with the boys in the group.
  • Mascot: Since 2010, Bell has become the official mascot for the franchise.

Kurumi Risu-chan / Kurumi Risu No On'na No Ko / Saffron Walnut / Sarah Hazelnut / Greta Furbanks

Voiced by: Akiko Hasegawa

Saffron is the oldest of the Walnut siblings. A girl who cherishes her friends deeply, she is very curious but a good overachiever. She sometimes had some disagreements with her father's contraptions. Her father's contraptions appeared to have finally gotten to her as of the 2017 OVAs, with her occasionally going mad-scientist and inventing things like glow-in-the-dark bubble fluid.

  • Adaptation Species Change: Marketed as a chipmunk in the US. Elsewhere she is a squirrel.
  • Agony of the Feet: In the 2nd OVA where she got a broken foot after the set crashed down along with her.
  • Art Evolution: The character designs of her and her family was refined when her family transitioned from Furbanks to Walnut. Additionally they gave her and her family new outfits.
  • The Big Girl
  • Cool Big Sis‎: To Ralph/Dominic.
  • Demoted to Extra: Not as bad as Rebecca, but due to the focus of the 2017 OVAs shifting focus on to her little brother Ralph/Dominic.
  • The Fashionista: Played in a funny way when her dad modified her wardrobe. Also played completely straight in the one of the Game Boy Advance games.
  • Girly Girl: In contrast with the boys in the group.
  • I Have Many Names: Has four names, due to the International marketing team synchronizing the names with the Japanese one while the US marketing team chose a completely new name (previously, they were sold outside of Japan under the Furbanks name. Currently, the International English family name is synchronized with the Japanese family name while the US English name was a completely new name).
  • Mad Scientist: in the 2018 shorts. Ralph/Dominic mentions that she only becomes one when she puts on her glasses.
  • Meaningful Name: Kurumi means Walnut.
    • Malicious Misnaming: Her name in the subs is Greta Furbanks. However she uses the current squirrel mold for the OVA, which is the Walnut Squirrels. It also means her name should have been Saffron Walnut, if its judged from both the Japanese and UK canonity of the toys. It turns out that there is a really confusing story behind this: apparently at one point in the past the characters were named differently. Furbanks was apparently the old name for the squirrel family who was revamped into the Walnut family (though their entire backstory and outfit was changed so much, and their design was refined, that they might as well be considered a different family) while the OVAs were being produced. This most likely happened due to a miscommunication between the internationalization team and the scriptwriters.
  • Parents as People: Her parents were this. Thought sometimes she finds her father a little weird due to his inventions.
  • Retcon: The transition from Furbanks to Walnut/Hazelnut totally changed her backstory that the Furbanks and Walnuts might as well be considered different families.
  • Same Character, But Different: See Retcon and Art Evolution above.
  • Tsundere
  • Verbal Tic: In the Japanese dub of the 2018 shorts, she has a verbal tic of three short glugging sounds. However the verbal tic was not carried over to the International English dub.

Shima Neko-chan (Shima Neko No On'na No Ko) / Asparagus Macavity / Sabrina Striped / Sabrina Sandy

Voiced by: Kana Ueda (2007 OVAs), Sumire Uesaka (2017-), Kira Buckland (US 2017-), Jenna Sharpe (International 2017-)

Rumpus's older sister. Asparagus is a beige colored cat with brown ears and brown stripes who is seriously thoughtful and yet supportive to her close friend Rebecca like an older sister. She can be very mean sometimes. In the 2017 OVA she enjoys sports.

  • Action Girl
  • Art Evolution: Not as bad as Saffron's family's transition as one can take a quick glance at a old Macavity set and a new Striped Cat set and still see that they're otherwise identical figures, aside from the new outfit set provided during the transition.
  • Cool Big Sis‎: To Rumpus/Shane.
  • Demoted to Extra: While she doesn’t get it as bad as Rebecca, the focus of the 2017 series shifted onto her little brother Rumpus/Shane instead.
  • Determinator: To Rebecca.
  • I Have Many Names: Has four names, due to the International marketing team synchronizing the names with the Japanese one while the US marketing team chose a completely new name (previously, they were sold outside of Japan under the Macavity name. Currently, the International English family name is synchronized with the Japanese family name while the US English name was a completely new name).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: To the group sometimes.
  • The Lancer / The Smart Girl: She did thought up of a prank on getting even with Buster.
  • Meaningful Name: Shima means striped in Japanese.
    • Punny Name: Her (old) North American English name is rather hilarious to hear seeing that Asparagus is a name of a Vegetable.
  • Retcon: Like Saffron, her entire family name and backstory was changed in The New '10s when the International family name was changed from Macavity to Striped/Sandy.
  • Same Character, But Different: See Retcon and Art Evolution above.
  • Tomboy / Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the most notably tomboyish character in the series, especially compared to Girly Girls Bell, Melinda, and Susie.
