CCC Arc (Fate/VRAINS)

The main antagonists of "Season 0." They are hunting Hakuno Kishinami in the hopes of obtaining her Regalia for a mysterious purpose. They are all comprised of alternate counterparts to individuals that Hakuno has fought and defeated in the Moon Cell Holy Grail War.

    Big Bad (Unmarked Spoilers)

Kiara Sessyoin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiarastage04_6.jpg
The Beast

The true Big Bad of Fate/Extra CCC and the primary villain of the CCC Arc.

The Beast III. She who represents All Evils of the World, twisted and reshaped for the desire of passion and love.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Kiara's goals in CCC were to bring the world under the idea that, in order to reach salvation, they must reach enlightenment by way of "pure bliss." And by that, we mean one big orgasm. Here, Kiara is trying to find Hakuno and take her Regalia, which has been entrusted with the functions of every Moon Cell in existence. In her quest to find Hakuno Kishinami Zaizen, the holder of this unique Regalia, she's apparently conquered several different parallel dimensions, including Rin Tohsaka's. While her goal is still the same as her CCC counterpart, this Kiara has done more than a few horrible things to accomplish her goal.
  • Alternate Self: This version of Kiara is more in line with her Fate/Grand Order incarnation than her CCC portrayal, evident by the fact that she has Zepar, the catalyst behind her transformation into Beast III in the former game. She even had EMIYA Alter as her Servant before he went against her after realizing what her plan was.
  • Big Bad: Of the CCC Arc and of Fate/VRAINS.
  • Beyond the Impossible: She's accomplished this on two occasions in "FATED BATTLE." The first is accumulating a ludicrous amount of Life Points, as high as 50,000 in the first turn alone. The second is her Duel Monsters form, Beast III — Demon King Rapture, which is a Link 8 monster.
  • Climax Boss: Kiara is stated to not be Hakuno's final opponent, and is instead the ultimate antagonist of the CCC Arc.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Averted horribly. Unlike in CCC, Kiara managed to achieve her ascension as a Beast thanks to subjugating Zepar.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: Played straight at first. Early in the duel, she gets heavily aroused whenever she's dealt damage, but doesn't show the same when she's the one dishing it out. When Revolver intervenes, she drops this and becomes annoyed and worried the more Hakuno and Revolver push her into a corner.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: This is pretty much the only way to describe how the first half of Kiara and Hakuno's duel unfolds. She practically No Sells everything Hakuno throws at her and only makes it harder for her by continuously increasing her Life Points to ludicrous amounts.
  • Double Entendre: And you thought Shuten-Douji knew how to make something sound dirty. This woman is sex personafied.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Her huge life point pool is used against her thanks to Revolver having Life Equalizer.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: Has one in the middle of hers and Hakuno's duel, much to Archer's disgust.
  • Loophole Abuse: Kiara's effects ensure that no monster who is Link 7 and lower can't affect her, and even if they did, she can't be destroyed by battle or by card effects. What she failed to take into account, however, was that card destruction isn't the only way to get a card to leave the field. Something Revolver's Topologic Zerovoros is happy to exploit by banishing Beast III.
  • Mad Love: As explained in Fate/Grand Order, all Beasts share a powerful, yet destructive love for mankind. Kiara herself is no exception.
  • Meaningful Name: The "Spiritron" support archetype Kiara uses to back-up her "Mara" monsters are in reference to the selfsame Spiritrons utilized by Spirit Hackers - the building blocks of a person's soul.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Kiara breaking down the walls between realities is the reason Gilgamesh was able to show up to assist Hakuno, when he normally would have been trapped on the Far Side of the Moon Cell.
  • No-Sell: As Beast III — Demon King Rapture. Her effects make it clear that, unless Hakuno has a Link 8 monster at her disposal or uses Spells and Traps to deal damage instead, nothing she can throw at Kiara will work. This becomes subverted by Revolver, whose assistance proves vital in defeating her, and her No-Sell armor is shot to hell thanks to Hakuno summoning Gilgamesh.
  • Oh, Crap!: The second Revolver gets involved in the duel, she starts having trouble. And just when she thinks she manages to get back control in the duel, Hakuno effectively pulls one over her by summoning Gilgamesh and taking her apart.
  • One-Winged Angel: Merges with her boss monster in a way similar to Yami Marik merging with The Winged Dragon of Ra and Z-ARC merging with Supreme King Z-ARC.
  • Orcus on His Throne: She hasn't actively involved herself in her attempts to capture Hakuno and obtain the Regalia, instead leaving the matter to Julius and BB. She does become involved when she has Julius feed his blood to Zepar, which in turn causes it to spread throughout LINK VRAINS and begin merging the virtual world with reality. It isn't until the final duel that she battles Hakuno, and more than proves a match for her.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Kiara uses the "Mara" archetype. If you're familiar with Buddhist mythology, Mara is the name of a demon that embodies temptation, even at one point trying to tempt Buddha himself.
  • Smug Super: Was extremely confident that with her being a Link 8 monster who could not be destroyed in battle unless the opponent was equal, she was untouchable. Revolver showed that it is possible to get around that, and Gilgamesh was able to outright shut her down.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She starts having a panic attack when Hakuno summons Gilgamesh, and for good reason.
  • When Trees Attack: When Kiara begins her assault on LINK VRAINS, she spreads demonic tree roots all over the datascape. What's worse is that the tree is actually this story's version of Zepar, which is not only fusing LINK VRAINS with reality, but is preventing everyone inside LINK VRAINS from logging out.

Julius B. Harwey & Li Shuwen

Julius B. Harwey

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fe_8.jpg
The Ghost of Hate and Rage
Click here to see Julius Unmasked

An Alternate Self of Julius Harwey from Fate/Extra Last Encore.

The older brother to Leonardo B. Harwey, he was born as the illegitimate child to the family and raised in secret, with few aware of his existence. By his own admission, if Leo was the light, then he is the darkness of the Harwey lineage. He is one of the strongest foes Hakuno had ever faced in the Moon Cell. In death, he was remade as a cyber ghost, still intent on completing his goals and ensuring Leo won the Holy Grail War. When he was defeated, Hakuno felt only pity, yet found herself unable to cry.

This Julius, however, is consumed by his own rage and hatred, devolving into a "Dead Face" — a cyber ghost that can only feel anger towards the living and the world around it.

For the sake of his revenge against Hakuno Kishinami, he joined Kiara Sessyoin in order to find and kill the counterpart of his world's Hakuno. He is the Master of Li Shuwen, an Assassin-class Servant. Similar to his existence as a cyber ghost, however, Li Shuwen is classified as a Berserker.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Leo's Duel with Julius makes one question Julius' predicament when you consider a few factors. First, he expresses genuine respect, awe and joy at Leo's various counters and planning. And secondly, he never outright expresses hatred towards Leo, even telling him to leave lest he force Julius' hand. The latter is ESPECIALLY jarring, in that Dead Faces cannot feel any positive emotions and despise everyone, without exception. HAKUNO was able to develop some control over his existence, but that was due to his unique nature. The Duel overall makes it uncertain as to whether or not Julius is a Dead Face, or he's just consumed by his own hate for Hakuno that he's become something very close. Chapter 19 reveals that Julius is a Dead Face, but all of his anger was directed at himself for not understanding why Hakuno was crying for him, which resulted in a conflicted nature that was tearing his body apart.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Leo's Abel.
  • Co-Dragons: With BB, though he eventually takes over her role at the start of the CCC Arc's climax.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Like Aoi, Julius employs a burn deck, except whereas hers does small points of damage to her opponent when they add a card to their hand or summon a monster, Julius' deck revolves around destroying his own monsters and resummoning them. Not only that, but he also takes damage as well, demonstrating incredible pain tolerance as he can withstand his own effects. Aoi found this out the hard way.
  • Death Seeker: Implied. He purposely didn't treat his older injuries and ultimately succumbs to his wounds, all in the hopes that he could be reunited with the Leo from his world, citing that he existed to be Leo's "shadow", and without him, there was no reason for him to exist.
  • The Dragon: He was this to Kiara while also serving as Co-Dragons with BB. When BB kidnaps Hakuno and attempts to hide her away from Kiara, Julius performs a Heel–Face Turn after his duel with Leo.
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • Similar to his portrayal in Last Encore, unlike the original Julius who only regarded Hakuno as an enemy simply because of circumstance, Dead Face!Julius is utterly overwhelmed by his desire for revenge and will do anything to make Hakuno's life a living hell, even going so far as to brutalize Aoi in their duel when she attempted to protect Hakuno.
    • His Cracked Cell cards are later revealed to be this, too. As it turns out, they're actually the corrupted remnants of a Moon Cell archtype.
  • Foil: To his younger brother, Leo. Julius is working with Kiara in the hopes that he can find Hakuno Kishinami and exact vengeance against her for killing him in his world. He also utilizes a fan-made deck consisting of Cracked Cell and Ultramarine Monsters. Leo is working with Rin to protect Hakuno, as they and other members of their resistance group all owe their respective "Hakuno Kishinamis" their lives, and defeat Kiara. Leo also employs a real-life Yu-Gi-Oh! deck called Magibullet. Further comparison between them is that Julius is a Dead Face that can feel nothing but hatred towards the world and the living — especially Hakuno. Leo, on the other hand, is a cyber ghost who has good relationships with his allies, including Hakuno, who he affectionately calls Hakunon.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Chooses to defend Hakuno from BB, at the cost of his own life.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: The true reason why Julius became a Dead Face. In truth, rather than despise Hakuno Kishinami for killing him, he instead despised himself for being unable to figure out why Hakuno cried for him when she was forced to defeat him in the Holy Grail War. Since Dead Faces are meant to hate everything around them, Julius' existence contradicted his grudge against himself, which led to his body straining to maintain itself.
  • The Power of Hate: This is what fuels each and every one of Julius' actions. It even overrides much of his own emotions, hence why Hakuno considers the existence of a Dead Face to be a Fate Worse than Death.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Dies after succumbing to his wounds, having protected Hakuno from BB.
  • Why Can't I Hate You?: As Julius quickly realizes, despite his existence as a Dead Face, he cannot express any sort of hatred towards Leo or his mother, the one person who showed him kindness.
  • Vengeful Ghost: His existence as a Dead Face. Unlike HAKUNO Kishinami, he's resigned himself to his fate and possesses no other emotions. Or so it seems at first. In reality, he's a "failed" Dead Face who despises not the world and those in it, but himself due to being unable to understand why Hakuno Kishinami cried for him after she was forced to defeat him.

Li Shuwen

Class: Assassin (former), Berserker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/li_shuwen_extella_6.png
Click here to see "Corroded Servant — Berserker"

A master of the martial arts, this individual did not learn a thousand techniques. No, he wished to finish his opponent in a single blow. Li Shuwen is one of the most famous martial artists in China, he was also skilled in utilizing the spear, having founded one of the many branches.

Due to his unneeded killing of his opponents, he met his death not out on the battlefield, but instead was poisoned by one of his challenger's relatives.

For a brief time, Li Shuwen, under the influence of his Master becoming a Dead Face, was corrupted and became a Berserker known as a Corroded Servant.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: His preferred fighting style. He's good with a spear, but Li Shuwen prefers beating someone to death with his bare hands over impaling them on a stick.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Symbolizing his corruption, Li Shuwen's eyes now glowing red and his sclera is totally black. He's since lost them after returning to form at the end of Julius' duel with Leo.
  • Blood Knight: In life, he was a martial artist who challenged several foes over his long years. His lust for battle was what ultimately did him in when a challenger's family poisoned him in revenge.
  • No Name Given: In his Berserker form, he is called "Corroded Servant — Berserker." That said, Julius and Hakuno know his True Name. This becomes subverted when his Duel Monster card is rebranded as "Servant Assassin — Li Shuwen."
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has glowing red eyes in his corrupted Berserker state, and he has some dangerous effects. He loses the red eyes after seemingly regaining his sanity, but that doesn't make him any less dangerous.

    Run Ru & Vlad III

Run Ru

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lanrukun.jpg
A Clown of Cannibalism
A woman who only eats what she truly holds love for. Her mind, warped, led to her eating not only her own pet, but even her parents and her own child.

When she came to the Moon Cell, she wished to make everyone just like her. Lancer himself even seems to hold affection for her, affectionately calling her his bride.
  • Berserk Button: She gets very angry when Akira prevents her from wiping out the last of Aoi's Life Points, signified by her speech font becoming bold. Normally, whenever she talks, her speech is written "lIkE thIS" so for her to talk normally, albeit ragingly pissed, is very telling.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Her Vampire deck has monsters that require her to pay Life Points in order to use their Effects. Run Ru's main strategy is to use her Servant, which can give her LP based on the damage he does, in tandem with Vampire Bloodlust, which has a similar effect.
  • Cool Mask: Or creepy, considering her appearance. She's always seen wearing her clown mask.
  • Hidden Eyes: It's almost impossible to make out her actual eyes, since only the pupils are visible. This doesn't stop Yusaku and the Zaizen siblings from noticing how "crazy" she is just by looking at them.
  • Horror Hunger: She can only eat things she loves. That includes "HUMANS." She ate her own pet, parents and her own child.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: She ate her family, and chances are, they were hardly the only people she's eaten. She's also started to take bites out of people in the Underground Dueling Circuit, where she reigns as champion.
  • Lean and Mean: She's tall and lanky, and she's out of her gourd. She's also pretty dangerous by using her Vampire deck.
  • Monster Clown: She's a cannibal, and she dresses like she was the Joker's long-lost sister. This adds to her overall feel of danger as well.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Unike the other members of Kiara's group, Run Ru isn't really interested in Hakuno, the Regalia or anything else. She just wants to take bites out of people.
  • Sadist: Takes some great pleasure in hurting Yusaku something fierce. When he's smacked up against an electric fence, she's outright screaming in glee and wants to eat him then and there.
  • Shout-Out: Her attire is pretty similar to the mascot of the McDonald's food chain. Hakuno even notes in Extra when they face off.
  • Tragic Monster: She's certifiably insane, but that's just because of her own disorder.

Vlad III

Class: Lancer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lancer2_extra.png
In Wallachia, he was a king, and above all else, a warrior that would do what he must to defend his kingdom. He would willingly spill blood, and in the name of god, any who dare stand against him would meet their end upon his spear.

In Wallachia, Vlad Tepes the Impaler, was a Hero.

To the rest of the world, however, he was a monster. Due to the novel written by Bram Stoker, in which Vlad served as inspiration, his existence became tainted. He was remembered as a "vampire."

And as a vampire, his thirst for blood was only matched by his devotion to god.
  • Ax-Crazy: Let's put it this way: when this man was alive, he put people on spears for a living, both as a punishment and preferred way of killing his foes.
  • Blessed with Suck: Even when he's been converted into a Duel Monster Spirit-like creature, Divine Aegis is still in effect, meaning he's still as religious and bloodthirsty as he was in Extra.
  • Blood Is the New Black: His armor is stained in crimson — no doubt all the blood he's spilled during his tenure as the Impaler.
  • The Butcher: What, did the name "Vlad the Impaler" not give it away?
  • Fangs Are Evil: His canines are absurdly sharp — one of the ways you can tell that this Vlad's summoning was effected by the novel "Dracula."
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: As Fate/Apocrypha showed, Vlad's summoning is dependent on specifically where he's summoned. If he's summoned anywhere outside of Wallachia, the end result is the blood-soaked Lancer that our psycho clown has. The reason for this was because of Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" tainting Vlad's legend, and in turn, affecting people's perception of him. To everyone outside of Wallachia, Vlad Tepes was the template for Dracula, and was therefore seen as a vampire himself.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He did not earn his nickname "The Impaler" for nothing.
  • Knight Templar: When he was still alive, Vlad impaled not only the noblemen who he believed were destabilizing Wallachia, he also impaled countless Turkish soldiers to discourage them from invading the Christian kingdoms.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes are bloody red, and if you aren't careful, you will find yourself on the other end of his spear.
  • Religious Bruiser: He was a devout Christian in life, and still remains as such. And you had better believe that he brings the pain in a fight.

    Elizabeth Bathory

Elizabeth Bathory

Class: Lancer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dbdfx3f_a6f25a4e_79fd_49b0_92e1_38468fcf6cf7.jpg
The Bloody Countess of Hungary
Click here to see True Form (Spoilers!)
The infamous Bloody Countess who bathed in the blood of countless virgins, in the hopes that she would forever stay youthful. When her crimes became too much to be ignored, she was imprisoned and locked away in a cell, with only a slot for food and water to be given to her. She couldn't understand what she did was wrong, and could only feebly beg for her guards to let her out.

As a Servant, Elizabeth is cruel, but developed a childish desire. She wished to become an Idol — a star that was beloved by everyone, just as she once was in life. Kiara would surely grant her wish, if she helped her obtain the Regalia from Hakuno Kishinami, she could truly become a star!

But first...she had to get rid of Aoi Zaizen.
  • Actually a Doombot: The reason why Elizabeth is able to Duel, when she should be a Duel Monster like the other Servants. She's a Cyber Frame crafted to house one half of her Assassin counterpart, as well as her older historical version Carmilla.
  • Adaptational Villainy: This version of Elizabeth lacks the one from CCC's Character Development, shown by the fact that she mercilessly tears into Aoi and comes dangerously close to actually killing her in their duel by tampering with the arena settings so her opponent takes more damage than what LINK VRAINS would normally allow. This may be due to her being one-half of Carmilla.
  • Attention Whore: Oh boy, is she ever. Practically her whole motivation for joining Kiara is to more or less become an idol singer so that everyone will pay attention to her.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When it becomes clear that Aoi's about to defeat her, she panics and pleads with her not to deal the final blow. Having been nearly killed and with her pride hurt, Aoi isn't having any of it and delivers the final blow in thier Duel.
  • Ambiguous Situation: She has some sort of connection to HAKUNO Kishinami, but it isn't explored. It is implied that she developed a good relationship with him, similar to her Character Development from CCC and sheds a tear when she feels that he's finally succumbed to his wounds, tearfully calling him a "stupid pig". The truth of their relationship is shown in Chapter 20, where Elizabeth, actually Carmilla, was the first Servant to be contracted by HAKUNO Kishinami.
  • Animal Motifs: Dragons. Makes sense, since she's descendant from one.
  • Berserk Button: She despises being touched. The only person she would allow to touch her was HAKUNO Kishinami.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She may act all ditzy and cutesy, but she can equally as cruel and merciless if you're unlucky enough to earn her ire for whatever reason. She drops all "silly" pretenses when she reveals herself as the Assassin-class Servant, Carmilla.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Thanks to her upbringing and mental illness, she just couldn't understand why it was such a big deal that she was killing peasants and draining them of their blood in the hope of preserving her youth.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Carmilla's Cyber Frame is still left over after her defeat, which Queen recovers from VRAINS prior to its recreation and uses it to create Voyager's Servant Vessel.
  • Claustrophobia: The only thing that can make her beg and plead for her life more than anything else is being confined to a small, tiny space — no doubt because of how she died in real life.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: She has a wonderful singing voice...on the rare occasion. When she sings anything other than maybe soft humming, she's utterly atrocious. On the flip side, however, she can weaponize her voice. This is pretty much the only reason she's got a good voice at all, to be honest.
  • Dark Is Evil: As Carmilla, she most certainly is.
  • Graceful Loser: She takes her defeat surprisingly well, despite becoming enraged at Go's initial attack.
  • Hates Being Touched: Her Berserk Button as Carmilla. By her own words, she only allowed one person to touch her.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: She has a wonderful singing voice, but her musical talent ranks right up there with Nero. She is THAT bad.
  • Horned Humanoid: Due to her dragonic heritage, she's sporting a dragon's tail and horns, plus a spiffy pair of wings. This is subverted in the case of her true form, where the horns are part of her mask.
  • Idol Singer: She wants to be this, and she's got the voice for it. The problem is that her singing leaves much to be desired.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: In flashbacks, Carmilla is shown to be quite fascinated by HAKUNO's unique nature as a Dead Face, and is impressive by his vicious demeanor when he chooses to fight by her side.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Courtesy of her tail, wings and horns. These are dropped when she reveals herself as Carmilla.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: While she's all for helping Kiara gain control of all the Moon Cells, her ultimate goal is to become an Idol. She has that chance in LINK VRAINS and challenges Aoi for the purpose of taking her place.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: In life, she was believed to have mixed her blood with that of a dragon, and her family crest is modeled after one. As a Servant, she possesses the Innocent Monster skill, which gives is why she has dragonic features.
  • Taught by Experience: Elizabeth pulls this on Aoi in their Duel, similar to her duel with Baira in the canon series. She had studied on Aoi's dueling technique and deck extensively in order to help give her the edge.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She delivers one to Aoi when she declares that she's going to take her place as the new Idol of LINK VRAINS. She states that Aoi is merely pretending to be one, and she isn't taking her job seriously. Aoi herself acknowledges this, much to her own displeasure.
  • The Rival: She believes herself to be this to Aoi Zaizen, and thinks herself to be far superior since she thinks she takes her job far more seriously than Aoi currently is. She even wants to take her place as the Idol of LINK VRAINS.
  • Sore Loser: After realizing that she was defeated by Aoi, she's reduced to a whining, sniffling mess and doesn't understand how she could have possibly have lost to Aoi.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: The only thing that can make her beg and plead for her life more than anything else is being confined to a small, tiny space — no doubt because of how she died in real life.

    BB

BB

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cccbb.png
The Infection of Mad Love

An Alternate Self to the Big Bad of Fate/EXTRA CCC.

An aberration in an otherwise perfect system, BB is the result of Sakura Matou's feelings of affection towards the protagonist developing into its own separate entity after being hacked by Kiara Sessyoin. She orchestrated the Sakura Labyrinth in the Far Side of the Moon as an attempt to protect Hakuno Kishinami from his eventual fate from deletion.

Sadly, this was not to be. She failed to protect her Hakuno. Now she works with Kiara Sessyoin, aiming to capture the Hakuno Kishinami that possesses the Regalia.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In CCC, BB could be quite condescending. Hell, her attitude made it hard for people to tell if she loved Hakuno or if she wanted to kill them, switching moods at the drop of a hat. Here, however, she's incredibly nice to Hakuno. She even tries to beg Hakuno to stay in her special datascape, just so she wouldn't have to fight Kiara. This might have to do with the fact that her own world's Hakuno was eaten by Zepar.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: BB's death is a somber affair for Hakuno, seeing her not as an enemy but someone who was driven to extremes because she couldn't afford to lose someone she cared about, Alternate Self or no.
  • Ambiguously Evil: For someone who's working to capture Hakuno and take control of every Moon Cell in existence, her actions are subject to suspicion. She is very polite towards Hakuno while abrasive towards her own allies.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: BB's strongest card, "Alter Ego — Kingprotea" is easily one of the largest monsters in the game, dwarfing many of Hakuno's other monsters and is described as being gargantuan.
  • Co-Dragons: With Julius, however...
  • Fatal Flaw: BB's most powerful monsters, her Alter Egos, have specific effects that require an Alter Ego card to be present on the field, which helps fuel their combat ability. However, there is one downside to this: if someone manages to destroy all three of her Alter Egos, all of which are fragments of BB and are therefore linked to her, she will die. Kiara lampshades this flaw early in the story, mentioning that BB's cards haven't stabilized — meaning she was referring to this flaw.
  • Literal Split Personality: The Alter Egos are all fragments of BB herself, though unlike CCC, they don't appear to exert any sort of emotion or activity besides being Duel Monsters. It's implied by Kiara that they aren't fully complete yet, which may also explain why if they are destroyed, then BB dies as well.
  • The Lost Lenore: In her world, she watched her Hakuno Kishinami die right in front of her, courtesy of Kiara absorbing him into Zepar. This is the major reason why BB doesn't want Hakuno Kishinami Zaizen to fight Kiara — she doesn't want to see another Hakuno Kishinami die right in front of her.
  • Theme Naming: Fitting for a woman who's Class is Moon Cancer, some of her monsters refer to medical conditions. Examples being "Moon Cancer — System Cyst"note  and "Moon Cancer — System Abscess"note . The most obvious example, though, is "Moon Cancer — System Tumor," whose name speaks for itself.
  • Together in Death: Implied. When BB is caught in the explosion caused by Li Shwuen's Noble Phantasm, she sees her world's Hakuno Kishinami.
    BBB: Senpai... You came...back...
  • Villainous Breakdown: She...really doesn't take Hakuno's declaration to fight Kiara pretty well. What really breaks her is what Hakuno says that leads to their duel:
Hakuno Kishinami Zaizen: I'm sorry, BB, I really am, but...I'm not your Hakuno.
    • She gets arguably worse in her Duel with Julius, her mood constantly changing back and forth between mocking, agitated and terrified, not being able to understand why she's having so much trouble against what she believes to be someone who couldn't even become a Dead Face properly. It's implied that her connection to Meltlilith and Passionlip being severed after they're destroyed destabilizes her condition, hence her radical mood swings.
  • The Virus: When Hakuno first meets BB, her consciousness regards her as an abnormality and a "cancer." BB herself also considers herself to be an infection of the Moon Cell, referencing her previous role in CCC.
  • Yandere: Considering she is more or less the Dark Sakura of the Extra universe, she fits the trope. Can't get more yandere than trying to trap Hakuno for an eternity inside a digital space between dimensions, even if she is trying to save her.
  • You Remind Me of X: Like nearly everyone from Extra, BB considers Hakuno Kishinami Zaizen to be the same person as her Hakuno Kishinami. She even notes that, despite being two different genders, they have the same features and "the same gaze."

Knights of Hanoi Arc (Fate/VRAINS - Laplace)

The antagonists of Laplace and the villains of the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS. An organization comprised of skillful hackers, they have declared their intention to destroy the Cyberse world and the advanced Artificial Intelligence lifeforms known as the Ignis. They are currently hunting down anyone who uses Cyberse cards.

    Revolver

Ryoken Kogami/Revolver

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yu_gi_oh__vrains_revolver__render__by_raidengtx_db9nyql_fullview.png
The Destroyer of Cyberse
The main antagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS Season 1.

The leader of the Knights of Hanoi, the hacker group who seek to destroy the mysterious data world called Cyberse, as well as the highly advanced artificial intelligence known as the Ignis.

In the near future, his fate and Yusaku's become intertwined in ways neither can imagine.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Topologic Zerovoros, which made its first debut near the end of Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS. In the duel against Kiara, Revolver obtains the monster through Storm Access.
  • Archaic Weapon for an Advanced Age: Revolver's trump cards in modern dueling are cards that haven't been seen since the early years of the series, such as Mirror Force - a perfect counter for Link Monsters since it destroys any monsters that are in Attack Position. He also has Life Equalizer and Mystic Wok, one of which was crucial to lower Kiara's life points.
  • Arc Welding: Hakuno's story takes place a year before the events of VRAINS, but Hakuno is the only person who can help Revolver get access to the Secret Area's databank, which has the data he and Kogami need to construct the Tower of Hanoi.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: He has surprisingly good synergy with Hakuno during her duel with Kiara.
  • Badass Longcoat: In his Revolver avatar, Ryoken sports a white coat that comes down to his calves.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up to save Hakuno from being defeated by Kiara.
Revolver: I have arrived...to the stage of destiny!
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Since his father's arrest, Revolver has been acting as the leader for the Knights of Hanoi. Keep in mind that he was only eight-years-old at the time.
  • Cool Mask: In his Revolver Avatar, he sports a tinted visor that hides his features to the point where his eyes are completely yellow.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He may not care about the virtual world since it dulls the senses, but even he won't stand by and allow Kiara to run rampant and kill innocent civilians.
  • Light Is Not Good: As Revolver, Ryoken is dressed in white attire, and he's the Big Bad for VRAINS Season 1.
  • Loophole Abuse: He exploits Kiara's own rules against her. She can't be destroyed by battle or by card effect, but none of her effects stop her from being banished. Something Topologic Zerovoros specializes in.
  • More Dakka: His Rokket deck is chock full of monsters that reference firearms and ammunition. His ace monster is a dragon with a gun barrel in its throat for god's sake.
  • Online Alias: His LINK VRAINS avatar is called Revolver.
  • The Leader: He's the leader of the Knights of Hanoi, and he's been at this since he was thirteen.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: His use of old-style cards are extremely effective when used against the current generation of Duel Monster cards. Case in point: Link Monsters do not have DEF, meaning they're always in Attack Position. Duelists in VRAINS use Link Monsters as their ace. Mirror Force destroys all monsters that are in Attack Position. Take a guess what happens next?
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Like his father, he believes that the Ignis and Cyberse have to be destroyed before war erupts between them and humanity. The lengths of which he'll go to include the Tower of Hanoi, which will enforce a massive EMP that will utterly destroy the network — which society is now fully integrated with. In short, he's willing to be remembered as one of the worst cyber terrorists in the world if it means he can destroy what he thinks is a major threat to humanity.

    Professor Kogami

Kiyoshi Kogami

The Creator of the Ignis
The one who orchestrated the Lost Incident, and the Man Behind the Man.

The father of Ryoken Kogami, the leader of the Knights of Hanoi, he is the creator of the advanced AI Ignis life forms, and wishes to eliminate them due to the potential threat they possess.
  • Alliterative Name: Kiyoshi Kogami.
  • Anti-Villain: He ran countless simulations regarding the relationships between the Ignis and the Humans, and the results came back the same: the Ignis and humanity would go to war. He genuinely believes that destroying the Ignis is the only way humanity to be safe.
  • Beard of Evil: Zigzagged, due to the Anti-Villain mentioned up above.
  • Info Dump: Reveals the purpose behind the Secret Area - The Lunar Ocean to Revolver and what the initial intent behind the creation of LINK VRAINS was.
  • Knight Templar: He's willing to go to some extreme lengths to eliminate the Ignis, which includes creating the Tower of Hanoi, which absorbs the conscious data of everyone in LINK VRAINS, prevents them from logging out, and enacts a powerful EMP that will destroy the network.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: He's always seen wearing a labcoat, and he was one of the most brilliant minds at SOL Technology, second only to Twice.
  • Mad Scientist: Downplayed. He's quite calm and level-headed, but he's a Knight Templar who's willing to become one of the worst cyber terrorists in modern history.
  • The Man Behind the Man: While Revolver is The Leader for Hanoi, it's Kogami's wishes that Revolver wants to fulfill.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He deeply regrets the creation of the Ignis when he discovers that countless simulations reveal that each scenario always ends with humans and Ignis going to war.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Unlike Revolver, Kogami's actions are simply research and developing the tools needed to destroy the Cyberse.
  • The Stoic: Compared to his more passionate son, he's quite level-headed and reserved.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He's willing to become the worst cyber terrorist in history if it means he can protect humanity from the Ignis.

    Alkaid & Robin Hood

Alkaid/Dan Blackmore

Seemingly a high-ranking member of the Knights of Hanoi, he was first mentioned in the final chapter of Fate/VRAINS by Revolver and Kogami as they were discussing a new recruit into their ranks. He is officially introduced in TURN-02 of Laplace as part of a hunting group tasked with destroying Aoi Zaizen's "Silver Streak" archetype.
In truth, his IRL identity is that of Dan Blackmore, one of the Masters that Hakuno fought in the Moon Cell Holy Grail War. He is the Master of the Archer-class Servant, Robin Hood.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Despite having been Hakuno's opponent, Dan was nothing short of encouraging and told Hakuno upon his defeat to have the resolve to push onward. Here, he is in direct conflict with her, though this may be a case of Ambiguously Evil as while he is part of the Knights of Hanoi, he is not acting entirely maliciously and even offers Aoi a chance to surrender.
  • Friendly Sniper: He admits that he's been having trouble sniping smaller targets, but he easily destroys Silver Streak Sky Surfer when Aoi attempts to escape. He is also remarkably polite and isn't needlessly as antagonistic as the rest of the Knights of Hanoi are.
  • Honor Before Reason: When the Knights of Hanoi had Aoi dead to rights, Alkaid chose to instead opt for her surrender and a peaceful solution. He was also not keen on dueling Yusaku in what he thought was an unfair fight since he had his subordinate with him.
  • Mythology Gag: His cards of choice are none other than the Black Luster Soldier and Gaia The Fierce Knight archetypes, the same ones once used b Yugi Muto in the original anime. Even Yusaku recognizes them by name alone as being one of the very first cards ever released when Duel Monsters was first conceptualized.
  • Online Alias: His real name is Dan Blackmore. In SERAPH VRAINS, he is known as Alkaid when with the Knights of Hanoi.
  • Retired Badass: He used to be a military soldier prior to becoming a Master in the Holy Grail War. This translates very well into Laplace when he participates in Duel Monsters.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Justified, since Hakuno only knows Dan by his real appearance. As Alkaid, he appears drastically different and doesn't realize it's him until he reveals he is a Master like she is and his Servant is Robin Hood.

Robin Hood

Class: Archer

Yo. Been a while, brownie.
Contrary to popular belief, the man "Robin Hood" is not one person. In fact, the mantle has been assumed by many people across the years. The man in service to Dan Blackmore is but one of those many people.

  • Combat Pragmatist: He used every possible advantage he could to win a fight. As a Duel Monster, this hasn't changed as his effects revolve around attacking and dealing damage to his opponent whenever they activate an effect.
  • Legacy Character: He was one of the many people to assume the mantle of Robin Hood, not the man who became the famous thief who started the myth.

    Knight of Hanoi (Rin/Aoi Duel)

Knight of Hanoi

A female member of the Knights of Hanoi who was tasked with pursuing Aoi by Alkaid. Before she can attempt to summon Cracking Dragon and defeat Aoi, however, her Duel Disk is locked down by Rin and must defeat the two in a duel if she wishes to destroy Aoi's deck.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: She is (currently) the only lower-ranking member of the Knights of Hanoi to use an archetype other than DARK Machine monsters; namely Steelswarm, which are essentially metal bugs. Special mentions go to Steelswarm Hercules, which is a giant multi-armed beetle.
  • Combat Pragmatist: She uses her Steelswarm deck alongside Hacking Virus to prevent her opponents from special summon powerful monsters with equally strong effects and monsters from the Extra Deck. She also takes various guarantees and sets up different forms of defense in case Rin and Aoi somehow manage to defend against her attacks.
  • Dark Action Girl: A female member of the Knights of Hanoi like Baira, and is just as devoted to destroying the Cyberse as the rest of the organization.
  • Dark Is Evil: She uses DARK attribute monsters in her deck, including the Steelswarm deck.

    Knight of Hanoi (Yusaku/Hakuno Duel)

Knight of Hanoi

A male member of the Knights of Hanoi who fought alongside Alkaid when Yusaku intervenes in their battle. He is very hot-headed and brash, but is no less dangerous than the others.
  • Hot-Blooded: Very much so. Alkaid even mentions that he joined the organization recently and is constantly agitated by Hakuno's defensive plays.
