Servants

Legendary souls who became recognized for their impressive feats while still among the living. As time passed, their legends grew and, as they became more recognized throughout human history, they joined the Throne of Heroes. They are summoned to fight in vessels pertaining to a specific class that relates to their legend and serve the one who summons them in the battle known as the Holy Grail War.

In Fate/VRAINS, the Servants, while capable of appearing outside of Duel Disks if they are outfitted with the proper equipment, are now recognized by the World as Duel Monsters.

Servants introduced in Fate/VRAINS

    Nameless

Nameless

Class: Archer

Archer's appearance in Fate/VRAINS - Laplace

Once, long ago, there was a hero in the modern era of magecraft. He dreamed of one day becoming a "hero of justice," but such lofty ideals had betrayed him. His fate was determined not out on the battlefield in pursuit of justice, but by courty system. Though his actions were questionable, he was remembered for his accomplishments and deeds. A hero who's name has been forgotten.

Yes, even now, he remains a nameless hero, meant to represent someone with no background of their own. It was almost as if these two were made for one another. Perhaps this time, he would live up to his ideals. Perhaps this time, he would truly be a "hero of justice."

  • Aloof Big Brother: He's more or less adopted this role since his and Hakuno's arrival in the world of VRAINS.
  • Alternate Self: Is this to his stay night counterpart.
  • Anti-Hero: In life, he was this. He confessed that he had killed innocent bystanders and even children in pursuit of his dreams. This was ultimately what ended his career: his best friend, concerned that he was going down the path of a Knight Templar and couldn't be persuaded, turned him over to the police.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Through the use of Hakuno's last Command Seal and the Regalia, Archer saved his Master from being deleted. The rescue also resulted in him being made into a Duel Monster card, and much of his abilities made into Spells and Traps.
  • Born Unlucky: Subverted. Since being made into a Duel Monster card, Nameless doesn't seem to adhere to the classification and ranking system of Servants.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Oh, come on. It's Archer.
Nameless: (to Berserker): Hello, Li Shuwen. Miss me?
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": He does not appreciate being called by his former name. As far as he is concerned, Shirou Emiya and himself are two different people. That being said, he does acknowledge that he came to be because of Shirou Emiya's actions in life. This becomes averted at the finale of Fate/VRAINS and in the sequel Laplace when Hakuno alters his Saint Graph after Over-Link Summoning him as "Moon Crux - Shirou Emiya." In Laplace, he is called "Servant Archer - EMIYA" instead of Nameless. Word of God states that the reason for this change is because of the change in his Saint Graph and his current form is him when he is "midway" to becoming the Second Magus Killer.
  • Dual Wielding: He wouldn't be the red Archer if he didn't have his famous Kanshou and Byakuya.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Like Nero, he also obtains an upgrade in the form of Over-Link Summon as "Moon Crux — Shirou Emiya".
  • Field of Blades: Unlimited Blade Works, though it's been relegated to being accessible via a Field Spell, as per the rules of Duel Monsters. The same cannot be said about its upgraded form Unlimited Blade Works — Tempered.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He doesn't have a very good view of himself, despite Hakuno stating that he is a good person.
  • Principles Zealot: Archer believes that he was guilty of this, the principle in question being justice. It was also why his best friend was so concerned about him, as they feared he might end up becoming a Knight Templar.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: He was capable of creating any weapon he saw through Tracing and Projection. All weapons he's since learned are now Equip Spells.
  • Vigilante Man: This was how Archer was in real life.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He was willing to kill even children in his pursuit of his ideals, but that didn't mean he had to like it.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: He's not exactly thrilled to see that Hakuno summoned Gilgamesh.

    Cu Chulainn

    Nero Claudius

Nero Claudius

Class: Saber

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nero_claudius_fate_extella_1.png
Moon Crux Form
Nero's appearance in Fate/VRAINS - Laplace

The Roman Emperor who watched Rome burn as she played the fiddle...or so the story went. In truth, she was but a girl who loved and adored the people and wanted nothing more than to make them happy. Due to the machinations of her mother, however, the girl's life had become twisted. And so she became that which history remembers her.

Yet even now, she continues to sing and dance in her wondrous sanctum. That golden theatre, beloved by the gods themselves. With sword in hand, she will cleave a path to victory.

For her Praetor.

  • Alternate Self: Downplayed. She is the Nero Claudius players of Fate/EXTRA remember, but she is HAKUNO's Servant, not Hakuno Kishinami.
  • BFS: Her weapon of choice is a red sword that's almost as long as her body.
  • Chained by Fashion: For some odd reason, Nero's Bride outfit has a chain dangling around her neck, complete with a lock attached to the end.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Her Moon Crux form in "FATED BATTLE, PART II." Whereas she raises her ATK when linked to a Link Monster, she can instead boost her ATK once per turn equal to the Link Rating of every monster on the field. Not only that, but she can also attack twice per turn, four if she uses her Over Material and tribute a Link Monster.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blonde hair, and she's easily one of the most heroic and passionate characters in the story, actively encouraging and providing comfort to Hakuno when she needs it alongside Nameless.
  • Historical Badass Upgrade: We're quite sure that the original Nero Claudius wasn't capable of creating a flaming sword or wiping out hundreds of enemies. Much less summon a beautiful golden theater (though in fairness this Nero couldn't do that in life either).
  • Historical Gender Flip: The historical Emperor Nero was a man, whereas this one is a beautiful woman.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She's shorter than Nameless, who is taller than her and Hakuno.
  • Last of His Kind: Inverted. As "Moon Crux - Nero Claudius" she is the very first Over-Link Monster to be introduced in the story.
  • Large Ham: Given how she's a self-styled playwrite and singer, she'd have to be. She also be a bit flamboyant at times.
  • Light Is Good: She changes out her red dress in favor of a form-fitting white bodysuit that exposes a large amount of skin.
  • The Lost Lenore: At the end of TURN-10, Saber's original Master has died. It was clear that Saber loved him dearly, and still does, even as she proclaims that HAKUNO and Hakuno are the same person. She's not exactly wrong.
  • Playing with Fire: Some of her attacks have her utilize flames. She's also classified as a FIRE Duel Monster.
  • Red Is Heroic: She is the "Red Saber," after all.
  • Something about a Rose: It wouldn't be Nero Claudius without this trope. She is known as the Emperor of Roses, and rose petals are part of her summoning.
  • Stripperiffic: Her Bride attire in Laplace, which has the front zipped down all the way down to her naval, exposing a fair amount of skin and Cleavage Window.

    Francis Drake

Francis Drake

Class: Rider

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drake_extella.png
A world-renown explorer who traveled across the seas, Francis Drake was a name no one didn't know. The second person to travel across the globe successfully, Drake allowed Europe to become the superpower it was in the day during the Age of Discovery.

However, the subject of Francis Drake's own existence is one of question. Some believed that Francis Drake was, in truth, Queen Elizabeth who pursued a life of adventure. Though she was a woman, Drake was not looked down upon and was even welcomed with respect, for her efforts and abilities demanded it.

During the Age of Discovery, when Spain and England came to blows, the former had suffered a terrible defeat at her hands, and for that she was known to them as "Teremoso el Draque" — The Devil.

Even after she has died and has joined the Throne of Heroes, she still sails across the sea. Together, with her new First Mate.
  • Action Girl: Historically, Francis Drake was male, but Rider is female (possibly because she's Queen Elizabeth in disguise) and she was one of the most feared pirates of her time.
  • The Dreaded: She was rightfully feared by the Spanish, and was practically called the Devil.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Since her design is based off of her appearance in Extella Link, Rider wears an eyepatch over her right eye.
  • Fiery Redhead: While she's not fiery, she's quite enthusiastic when it comes to her job.
  • Flaunting Your Fleets: Due to Shinji utilizing the fan-made Scoundrel deck, which is supported by the Fur Hire archtype, Drake commands her own personal fleet of ships.
  • More Dakka: When the Golden Hind is equipped to her, she and every monster on her field is armed with giant cannons.
  • Pirate: Invokes this image more than her original appearance, and she even commands her own fleet in the form of the Scoundrel monsters that serve as their ships and the Fur Hire deck as her crew.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Shinji, even though their relationship is more along the lines of crewmate and Captain.
  • Unnecessarily Large Vessel: Her flagship, the Golden Hind, is quite large in comparison to the other ships at her disposal.
  • Worthy Opponent: She considers Saber to be this, even referencing the events of her world by stating that the Emperor of Roses had promised her a rematch.

    Gawain

Gawain

Class: Saber

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gawain1.jpg

A member of the Knight of the Round, and one of the most loyal followers of King Arthur Pendragon.

The wielder of the sword that burns together with the sun, his loyalty to his king was without question. Alongside the other members of the Knights of the Round, they served Arthur and protected Camelot. It was believed that, should King Arthur fall, then Gawain was perhaps best suited to succeed the King of Knights.

In spite of his fierce loyalty, he was unaware of the plight that plagued Arthur's mind. When Lancelot's affair with Queen Guinevere had come to light, and war had ultimately broke out, Gawain remained at his king's side and served as his right-hand man until the end.

Now a Servant, he answers to another. One who has the capacity to rule as King. And like before, he would offer his sword to this person, and see that he obtained the throne.

  • Badass Boast: When he prepares to use Galatine, he recites the same chant he would speak when he would activate his Noble Phantasm.
  • Covert Pervert: Alongside Leo, he is very interested in comparing Nero's technique with Kiara's when Leo ponders whether or not they'll see a recreation of the Kiara Incident as Nero begins to flirt with Hakuno.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Like Leo, he has blonde hair. He's also one of King Arthur's personal soldiers; a Knight of the Round Table.
  • Mythology Gag: One of Leo's Spells is "Lion King's Mantle," referring to Fate/Grand Order's Camelot Singularity, where Gawain served as a villain under the Lion King, an Alternate Self of Artoria that had become a Divine Spirit thanks to Rhongomyniad.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Artoria when he was alive and presently to Leo.

    Tamamo-no-Mae

Tamamo-no-Mae

Class: Caster

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tamamo_no_mae_fate_extella_9.png
God who resides in Izumo. aesthetically certain, breath of the soul. Residing in the mountains and watery heavens, Amaterasu. Let this freely become the proof of purification.
Moon Crux Form

Originally a part of the Shinto Sun Goddess Amaterasu-no-Ookami, Tamamo-no-Mae was the consort to Emperor Toba and lived a luxurious and comfortable lifestyle until the day Toba fell ill. It was when the shinto priest Abe no Seimei arrived to heal the Emperor that Tamamo's vulpine features were revealed and claimed she was the source behind her illness. Forced to flee and saddened by the hostility humans showed her when she only attempted to help them prosper, she remembered her true nature and died at the hands of her human pursuers, later becoming an infamous figure in life.

As a Servant, Tamamo-no-Mae's personality depends entirely on the summoner. However, she views the summoning itself as a sort of "marriage contract." Thus, whoever becomes her Master becomes her "husband," regardless if they are male or female.

She was the Servant of Twice H. Pierceman's fragment, though she later became Hakuno's Servant following the creation of the New World.

Beware of Unmarked Spoilers for Fate/VRAINS!

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Zigzagged. In contrast to her demeanor as Hakuno's Servant, Tamamo is harsh and abrasive to the point where she doesn't even show a hint of respect towards her Master Twice in a personality similar to her "Harlot Mode" from Extella. Then again, her personality does depend on who is her Master. After she becomes Hakuno's Servant, she behaves how she does in Extra and Extella.
  • Amnesiac God: When she descended down to the human world, she didn't remember her life as a fragment of Amaterasu and only remembered her true identity when she was killed by her human pursuers.
  • Asian Fox Spirit: She possesses certain vulpine features, such as fox ears and a pair of twin tails. Considering she's the historical Tamamo-no-Mae, the nine-tailed-fox who won the favor of the Emperor Toba, this makes a lot of sense, though it goes a hell of a lot further since she is also the human incarnation of Amaterasu.
  • Broken Bird: She once had a happy life as a consort to the Emperor, but when Abe no Seimei revealed her vulpine features and outed her as the one responsible for the disease that plagued Toba, she was hunted down and attacked until she was finally killed by a storm of arrows from over 80,000 soldiers. The worst part was that she descended to the human world because she wanted to help humans, only to lament in the last moments of her life before returning to Amaterasu that a human can't become a god.
  • I Am Who?: She's a fragment of the goddess Amaterasu-no-Ookami; a fact that she did not remember until she was killed.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: She saw how devoted humans were to her in spite of the dark and troubled times they lived in and wanted to repay that kindness.
  • Little Bit Beastly: As mentioned above, she has a pair of fox ears and two tails.
  • Magic Mirror: She wields her famed mirror when her Noble Phantasm in Spell Card form is activated.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: She wanted to repay the devotion shown by the humans who worshipped her and chose to live as a human and repay that devotion in kind. The problem was that she learned too late that humans didn't want devotion and was killed by the same people who worshipped her and tried to help as Toba's consort.
  • Paper Talisman: She wields them, both in and out of her Moon Crux form.
  • Power Limiter: Her existence as a Servant actually weakens her power, as each incarnation of Caster (i.e. Tamamo-Shark, Tamamo-Cat and Tamamo-vitch) are but one of nine fragments of the original Tamamo. When all nine are brought together, her power is comparable to that of a god.
  • The Tease: She certainly lives up to that reputation. Not even Aoi is safe from her, as evidence in the final chapter of Fate/VRAINS and in the crossover Digital Vrains.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Downplayed. Tamamo looks like one, but she has a very flirty way of speaking. That said, she does genuinely want to become a good wife to whoever becomes her Master.

    Spoiler Character

Gilgamesh

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gil_base.png
The King of Heroes

The oldest hero known in human history, and one of the most powerful Servants in existence.

Prior to his inclusion in the Throne of Heroes, Gilgamesh was created by the gods in the hopes that he would one day lead humanity into the proper path. However, Gilgamesh had come to understand humans and gods in a way that neither side truly understood, and he became a tyrant. In spite of this fact, he had found a friend in Enkidu, an existence meant to keep a watchful eye on the king.

Due to his overwhelming power, Gilgamesh could not be summoned in the Moon Cell Holy Grail War, as the rules wanted there to be a Sole Survivor, not the strongest Master. Hence, he could only be called from the Far Side of the Moon.

  • The Ace: His status as one of the strongest Servants in the Nasuverse translates very well into Duel Monsters. He is by far Hakuno's strongest monster, and he is very eager to show just how strong he is by fighting Kiara.
  • Bling of War: His usual attire has him dressed in gold armor.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has shades of this, as demonstrated by his reaction to Hakuno's Heroic BSoD in chapter 22.
Gilgamesh: Ugh, must you continue with this sappy drama?!
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: Befitting one of the most powerful Servants in the entire Nasuvere, Gilgamesh is almost always wearing his golden armor.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Non-romantic example. The reason Gilgamesh views Hakuno as the only one worthy to be his Master is because no matter what, she refuses to let anything stop her until her enemy has been defeated.
  • Instant-Win Condition: As a Duel Monster, he's one of the few who has these. If Hakuno doesn't have any cards on the field except him while he's equipped with Ea, and doesn't have any cards in her hand or in her graveyard, she automatically wins the duel.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While his personality might be considered abrasive, he does seem to genuinely care about Hakuno, in his own way.
  • My Rules Are Not Your Rules: Gilgamesh is stated in the author's notes to be a temperamental card in comparison to the other Servants that have become Duel Monsters in the story. According to the author, Gilgamesh will only allow someone to someone him when he wants to be summoned.
  • No-Sell: He can't be destroyed by battle or by card effect, and he locks down the effect of any monster that's unfortuante enough to be next to his Link Arrow. He's also a Link 8, which means he can effectively lock down the majority of his opponents. And since he's Link 8, that means his effects can lock down Kiara.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has red eyes that signify his godly heritage, and he is the last person you want to piss off.
  • Rousing Speech: Gives one to Hakuno, in his own Jerk with a Heart of Gold style.
Gilgamesh: Fool! Are you truly so blind? Have you learned nothing while participating in the rules of the World?! I would not show myself to you if I did not think you had the possibility of beating her. Answer me, mongrel! Who overcame all adversity and is standing before me? Who was it that achieved victory, despite having no history to call your own? Who was it that defeated that mongrel Saver? Who was it that fought with blood, sweat and tears to stand where she does now? Time and time again, you stood at a wall, and each and every time, rather than despair like some lesser fool, you chose to break down the wall with your bare hands. Your resolve is your most powerful asset. Now, tell me this. Do you still have it? The resolve and willingness to overcome this obstacle? Or will you spit on the faces and lives of those you swore you would protect? Are you so weak that you would break the one thing you hold dear?
  • Story-Breaker Power: In CCC, Gilgamesh couldn't be summoned in the Near Side, since anyone who summoned him might as well have already won the Holy Grail War. Word of God also states this as much, hence why Gilgamesh will only allow Hakuno to summon him when it interests him, not too differently from his statement of him being her Servant in CCC as that of an observer, witnessing her story to its conclusion. As a Duel Monster, his effects makes him one of the most dangerous cards in existence and can destroy almost anyone Hakuno throws at him. That isn't even going into what he can do with Ea equipped, much less his Instant-Win Condition.
  • The Unseen: Initially, Gilgamesh's presence was only alluded to in the author's notes, never appearing or even hinted at in the story proper until Chapter 15, though Hakuno only heard his voice. He finally appeared at the end of Chapter 19, and makes his full debut in Chapter 22.

    Spoiler Character

Voyager

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/boy_28.png
Killer of Servants
The last Servant to be summoned in Fate/VRAINS. His Matrix was retrieved by SOL Technologies when they investigated the newly created VRAINS network and created his Servant Vessel using Cyberse data material.
  • Adaptation Deviation: Voyager is a Foreigner-class Servant who manifested a physical body in accordance to Erice's influenc, with his appearance taking some inspiration from The Little Prince. Here, his body was constructed by SOL Technologies as a "Voyager" Servant.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: He's the Voyager-1 that was launched by NASA in 1977. As a Servant, he needed to manifest a physical body in order to interact with the world properly.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He is, by far, the youngest Servant in human history as far as the world of Fate is concerned, seeing as how he was "born" in 1977. For reference, the most recent Heroic Spirit to join the Throne of Heroes was Li Shuwen, who died in 1934.
