Clockwise from the bottom: Noah, Mio, Sena, Taion, Eunie, and Lanz

The main six party members of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Once soldiers of opposing natures but banded together through chance, Noah, Mio, Eunie, Taion, Lanz, and Sena have become Aionios' greatest hope in fighting against the machinations of Moebius and ending the Forever War between Keves and Agnus.

    In General
Noah: Embers on coat... brush them off.
Mio: If push comes to shove, do not flinch!
Noah: Do whatever it takes...!
Both: For the greater good!

  • Action Girl: Mio, Eunie, and Sena are young women who are capable, experienced soldiers and aren't afraid to get into a fight (and in Eunie's case quite enjoys sparring).
  • An Adventurer Is You:
    • Noah's starting Swordfighter is a Backstabber-type Melee DPS class.
    • Eunie's starting Medic Gunner is a Healer Classic with Buffer and Ether-based Ranged DPS.
    • Lanz's starting Heavy Guard is a Mitigation Tank that can block attacks and is enough of a Meat Shield to survive the hits it does take.
    • Mio's starting Zephyr is a Dodge Tank class.
    • Taion's starting Tactician is a Status Effect Buff, Debuff, and Mezzer class in addition to Ether-based Ranged DPS.
    • Sena's starting Ogre is a Melee DPS Mighty Glacier that uses combos to incapacitate enemies.
  • Ambiguously Human: They are all classed as humans in Aionios, even if they have visible differences in their physiology. This is lampshaded by Lanz and Sena, who start noticing each other's features after becoming Ouroboros.
  • Badass Crew: Two separate trios of soldiers who were already highly-skilled and accomplished being thrown together to save the world, becoming even more powerful and renowned in the process.
  • Can't Refuse the Call Anymore: When they first become Ouroboros, they decide to go their separate ways and return to their respective colonies. Said colonies treating them as enemies forces them to reunite and head for Swordmarch.
  • Childhood Friends: Noah, Lanz, and Eunie are friends that have known each other since childhood.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience:
    • Their Ouroboros forms differ in color depending on who's "controlling" the body. The Keves' crew Ouroboros forms are dark purple in color, whereas the Agnus crew's forms are white.
    • Downplayed with their human forms, but thanks to their Custom Uniform they have different colours in their design. Noah has red, Mio has grey, Eunie has green, Taion has orange, Lanz has turquoise, and Sena has blue.
  • Combo Platter Powers: As Ouroboros, they gain access to an Interlink, which has increased strength and a Healing Factor. They are also Immune to Mind Control, are not bound to any Flame Clock, and can use any weapon with the expertise of whoever they inherited the weapon class from. They also obtain that person's clothing.
  • Critical Annoyance: If the heroes remain in their fused state for too long, their bodies will start to heat up and warning sounds start blaring. While the group doesn't know exactly what it means, they all recognize a warning when they hear it and Taion theorizes it cannot be anything good. It is not until their encounter with Consuls O and P they learn what the warning sound is. True to Taion's concerns, the warning sounds signal the Ouroboros are dangerously close to becoming the trigger for an Annihilation Event.
  • Custom Uniform: Justified as their normal uniforms got dirty when fighting D for the first time. They all retain parts of their uniforms (the most obvious examples being Lanz and Taion's jackets and Eunie's jumpsuit), but they are combined with clothes they found in the crates Guernica was transporting.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Due to the Forever War they're in, they've all had at least one person die in front of them. This is usually part of the flashbacks their Ouroboros partner sees when they Interlink for the first time.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The Ouroboros forms of the Kevesi trio have a dark color scheme and look more sinister than their Agnian counterparts, but are no less heroic.
  • Deflector Shields: While Lanz's is the only one used in gameplay and is the strongest (both in strength and in being able to form a omnidirectional bubble barrier instead of just a barrier in one direction), all the Ouroboros forms appear able to produce energy shields. They're notably used in a few cutscenes to guard against the shock waves from nearby Annihilation Events the party finds themselves experiencing (the initial suction effect of the events making it difficult to simply flee the area).
  • Dismemberment Is Cheap: If they lose a body part in their Ouroboros forms, they can quickly and easily regenerate the lost limb by swapping to their partner's form. The only drawback is that they start to overheat sooner.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Prior to becoming Ouroboros the party were all part of their Colonies' elite special forces.
  • Enemy Mine: The two halves of the party are forced to put their differences aside after trying to kill each other almost immediately beforehand to fight against D.
  • Ensemble Cast: While Noah and Mio are the outstanding leads, the rest of the party also receives roughly similar levels of focus and continuous involvement in the plot throughout the game, which was a stated goal of the developers during development.
  • Equipment Upgrade: Completing the sidequest "Uniting the Seven Nopon" will allow the party to upgrade their base class weapons provided they collect enough Origin shards. Along with a new appearance for their weapon, they gain an increase in Attack, Critical, and Block Rate.
    • Noah's Veiled Sword becomes the Truthsinger.
    • Mio's Dual Moonblades become the Dual Sundancers.
    • Eunie's Gunrod becomes the Caduceus Gunrod.
    • Taion's Spell Tags: Mondo become the Spell Tags: Totality.
    • Lanz' Shieldblade becomes the Adamant Shell.
    • Sena's Comet Mallet becomes the Meteor Smasher.
  • Experienced Protagonist: The main characters of this game have all seen almost a decade's worth of war and countless battles across their short lives, with Mio in particular being the most experienced since she is explicitly in her 10th term and is only three months away from expiring. Further, rather than regular soldiers they all held the rank of Special Forces in their colonies.
  • Fanservice Pack: Some of the characters' Ouroboros Interlink forms are depicted with more fanservicey traits compared to their usual selves. For example, Noah and Taion's Interlinks have prominent crotch bulges and developed muscles and curves, and Taion's costume is designed in such a way as to resemble a Sexy Backless Outfit, while Eunie's has prominent breasts with noticeable cleavage, and her form's long legs receive a lot of focus and are even showcased in a Dominatrix-like pose in certain story cutscenes.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Members of the group from both the Keves and Agnus sides have this dynamic:
    • Noah and Mio are their group's Thieves. Noah is a Glass Cannon sword fighter who starts off with two attacks that work best when he strikes from the back or sides while the enemy is targeting someone else. Mio on the other hand is a not-so-Fragile Speedster dodge-tank who works by using rapid attacks to draw aggro and survives by dodging attacks.
    • Eunie and Taion are the Mages, both serving as Support Party Members with classes specializing in healing. Eunie does this as a Mage Marksman with her "Gunrod", which she can use as a gun, a polearm, and a healing device. Taion meanwhile does this using his Mondo to similar effects. Fittingly, they're the only ones of the Ouroboros pairs to both start in the same class type, the Healer.
    • Lanz and Sena are the Fighters. Lanz is The Big Guy who utilizes a BFS that turns into a shield as well as a minigun, and his initial playstyle revolves around drawing enemy attention and tanking blows. Sena meanwhile is a Cute Bruiser with her massive hammer that she uses to confront enemies head on and send them flying.
  • Fire-Forged Friends:
    • Each side started off trying to kill each other as enemies of war, but had to work together to survive their own colonies turning on both factions. Over time, they became close friends, lovers, in some cases, and wouldn't ever dream of separating. Until they have to.
    • They later become this to the Ouroboros candidates from the City. The latter group aren't particularly happy with the Keves and Agnus group as they feel cheated out of their chance to become Ouroboros themselves, with Jansen and Antos being upfront in their grievances. After the prison infiltration mission, however, the candidates becomes friends with them. It's to the point that Kryto and the other Homecomers (City members who reach twenty years of age) go out of their way to get the Ouroboros a key and their own personal room in the City.
  • Fish out of Water: The game is about six soldiers who have done nothing but fighting for their entire lives getting to experience life outside of fighting. They're some of the first Keves and Agnus soldiers to explore the opposing nations without the intention of fighting. This is especially true when the gang reaches the City, where they're the only ones there affected by the 10-year curse.
  • Five-Token Band: In addition to the nations of Keves and Agnus themselves being mixes of races from Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 respectively, Noah (Homs), Eunie (High Entia), Lanz (Machina), Mio (Gormotti Flesh Eater Blade), Taion (Blade Eater Human), and Sena (Blade) are all different races.
  • Freudian Trio: Present in both halves of the party:
    • For the Keves half, the brash Lanz is the Id, the sardonic Eunie is the Superego (though she can often be as brash as Lanz), and Noah is the Ego, mediating the two.
    • For the Agnus half, Sena, extraverted but insecure, is the Id, Taion, logical and tactical, is the Superego, and Mio, reserved and observant, is the Ego.
  • Fusion Dance: Noah and Mio, Eunie and Taion, and Lanz and Sena can combine via Interlink to form an Ouroboros, its form depending on who is the dominant partner at the time. While one form, they do still keep their separate minds, with the one currently speaking being signified by either the right (Keves) or left (Agnus) eye flashing while they talk.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: Three boys (Noah, Lanz, and Taion) and three girls (Mio, Sena, and Eunie) in the main party. Even including each initial team's respective Nopon with Riku and Manana, it's still equal.
  • Ghost Memory: When the party fuses into their Ouroboros forms, they see flashes of important memories of their partner before the fusion completes. It often takes quite a while, and some explicit explanations, for them to really understand what they see.
  • Good Counterpart:
    • As Ouroboros want to end the vicious cycle of death and rebirth comprising the Forever War, they are this to Moebius, who want to maintain the status quo to preserve themselves and entertain themselves with the neverending war between Keves and Agnus.
    • Moreso for Noah and Mio towards N and M, respectively, as the current Noah and Mio are considered to be the incarnated hopes and repentance of the previous Noah and Mio once they became Moebius. Though somewhat downplayed for M as she was Good All Along and that thanks to her swapping bodies with the current Mio prior to her Homecoming, she gave Ouroboros a chance to fully fight back.
  • Healing Factor: As long as the Core of an Interlink form remains intact, they can rapidly heal from any injury no matter how severe. This is explained as the body of the Interlink manifesting from the Core. In-gameplay this is represented in their inability to take damage while fused. However, the energy cost of said healing shortens the amount of time they can spend Interlinked (which is also reflected in gameplay if they are hit while Interlinked).
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic:
    • The Keves squad is introduced helmetless when almost everyone else is wearing one.
    • While the Agnus squad is introduced wearing helmets, they break in the subsequent battle with Noah's squad and they don't bother wearing them again once both halves join forces.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: To Aionios at large, they're considered traitors to both nations, and as D puts it, the world itself is their enemy.
  • High-Heeled Feet: Their Ouroboros forms appear to have high heels instead of something more practical-looking. This is most apparent for Mio and Lanz's forms.
  • Hour of Power: They can only stay Interlinked for so long until they heat up so much that they're forced to break up and have to wait longer before fusing again.
  • Holy Halo: The Ouroboros forms have a halo somewhere on their bodies.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Due to the circumstances surrounding the Ouroboros incident, the heroes take a little while to figure out how to use their powers. Most notably, while Noah instinctively Interlinks with Mio right away, Sena and Lanz's later attempt to replicate this ability fails, with Noah speculating that his desire to protect Mio and his friends was what unlocked the transformation. It takes a couple more intense battles for everyone to learn to Interlink.
  • Implied Love Interest: While Noah and Mio are the only Official Couple among the main cast, the others are sorted into M/F duos in a version of Everyone Must Be Paired, although it's downplayed in that none of them are confirmed as overtly romantic to nearly the same extent.
    • Eunie and Taion are a Will They or Won't They? duo who receive a lot of Ship Tease, but it's left ambiguous if they're romantically attracted or whether they're Vitriolic Best Buds. In the ending Eunie tells Taion he's only her fourth best friend, flustering him, but in characteristic Eunie fashion even that is likely a form of trolling, considering how smug she looked about it when asked if there was a problem. It's ambiguous whether that's just her way of flirting with him by teasing him one last time, or if she only sees the two of them as Just Friends. Taion's also even more visibly bothered than Noah once the worlds are completely split, with him collapsing to his knees in sorrow once the chasm of clouds is complete between the Agnian and Kevesi sides.
    • Lanz and Sena never show any overt signs of attraction to one another, with their relationship usually being depicted closer to a Platonic Life-Partners friendship between Birds of a Feather, being the first of the party to take a liking to one another and breaking the ice. At the same time, some of Sena's discussions on Interlinking and who is dominant are worded in such a way that implies Interlinking is something akin to a Romantic Fusion, even if the two never show any signs of overt romantic attraction in the same way that the other two pairs get.
    • Despite starting off as strangers, Riku and Manana are always praising one another and doing things to keep each other happy, with Riku showing a great deal of concern over Manana's wellbeing after she attempts to defend the party from spiders. The ending has them in tears over the prospect of being separated from one another.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Due to their Ouroboros powers freeing them from the slavery of the Flame Clocks, the main party is immune from getting controlled by the Consuls. However, they are still vulnerable to M's possession ability. Since this ability allows her and Mio to swap bodies as part of M's gambit to save the party and be free of N, this turns out to be a good thing.
  • Involuntary Group Split:
    • During the final boss battle, Z∞ splits the party up: Noah, Eunie, and Lanz fight X∞ and Mio, Taion, and Sena fight Y∞.
    • At the end of the game, as Origin reboots the two worlds and forces them to split, the Keves and Agnus halves are split up, though they promise to remember and find each other. The Stinger implies that this reunion will happen pretty soon.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: The first time the Keves and Agnus halves of the party meet, they fight and are pretty evenly matched until Vandham gets them to stop.
  • Meaningful Appearance: Their outfits are a combination of their military uniforms and clothing they salvaged from containers Guernica was transporting, showing their rejection of the Forever War but not completely abandoning their home nations. Said clothes come from the City, which is their first destination.
  • Mirror Boss: The Agnian half of the party is fought late in Chapter 1 with the Kevesi half of the party. Their lineup mirrors yours, consisting of a damager, a healer, and a tank.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: Many of the Ouroboros have weapons that can be used for multiple purposes. Noah’s sword doubles as a gauntlet, Eunie’s healing staff doubles as a gun, Lanz’s sword doubles as a turret, Sena’s hammer can be rolled up into a ball and thrown, etc.
  • Navel Outline: When they use the Lost Vanguard class, they wear an outfit instead of the usual overcoat. Said outfit is so form-fitting that anyone who wears it has their bellybutton visible through the fabric.
  • Nice Guy: None of them are particularly unfriendly people; at worse, Lanz and Taion have a lot of understandable bad blood left over from the Forever War, but they warm up pretty quickly and even before then are more than willing to bury the hatchet for mutual survival.
  • Refusal of the Call: When the group first become Ouroboros they initially decide to go their separate ways despite Noah and Mio's reluctance. Taion even says that they would next meet as enemies, implying that things haven't changed between the Kevesi and Agnian characters. Their home colonies being brainwashed into seeing them as the enemy forces the party to unite permanently.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Among the male party members, Lanz is the muscular and athletic Manly Man while Taion is a studious and physically slight Sensitive Guy, and their differences cause them to bicker a lot early on. Meanwhile Noah is somewhere in-between, being a thoughtful but also proactive Warrior Poet who tempers the other two's personalities.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Downplayed. Some members like Taion and Lanz aren't keen on fighting together at first given the bad blood between their countries, and they have some disagreements with how they fight. As time progresses, however, the group becomes a more cohesive unit.
  • Time-Shifted Actor: All three of the Kevesi protagonists have different English voice actors for the present day and flashbacks to their childhood. Lanz also has a different Japanese voice actor.
  • Town Girls: Among the female party members, Mio is the fashionable uptown girl, being a classy Nice Girl who is admired by her peers and also physically resembles the Queen of Agnus and is heavily implied to actually be her daughter or some other relation, which would make her the equivalent of Agnus royalty. Eunie is the out-of-town girl, being the most butch and aggressive, and also being the only female not from Agnus. Sena is the downtown girl who is neither, being a jockish Cute Bruiser and the most friendly to outsiders but also being a social outcast with a great deal of insecurities.
  • True Companions: By the end of the game, the group has become this after all of the trials they've went through.
  • Two Beings, One Body: While each fused Interlink pair has two forms based on who's in control, both individuals can speak from within the body. In battle, only the dominant member will speak, but in cutscenes the Ouroboros form's left eye lights up while its Agnian member is speaking, and its right eye lights up when its Kevesi member is speaking.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Played straight with the Kevesi trio; inverted for the Agnian trio.
  • The Unchosen One: Monica reveals this to be the case in Chapter 5. The power of Ouroboros was meant to go to the City's candidates, all of whom trained for that explicit purpose. The Kevesi and Agnian groups became Ouroboros partly out of circumstance and Vandham's snap decision to activate the Ouroboros Stone.
  • Unique Protagonist Asset: As the Ouroboros, the party are Immune to Mind Control, can uniquely change their classes and instantly learn their Arts—and as a result use both Keves and Agnus Arts at the same time, and finally Interlink to become substantially stronger.
  • Technical Pacifist: Soon after the group sets out on their journey they make plans to avoid fighting and killing as much as possible, though more often than than not they're reluctantly forced to do so.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Eunie, Lanz, and Taion have this kind of relationship amongst themselves, as the more cantankerous half of the party. It dies down over time as the party gets closer, though they continue to bicker and snark at one other from time to time.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Due to their upbringing as Child Soldiers that come out of cradles (and the Flame Clocks inhibiting and blocking awareness of sexual desire, reproduction as a concept and so on), the party initially has some issues comprehending forms of love that aren't based around comradeship, such as familial and romantic love. Learning about the latter is implied to be how Noah and Mio come to realize their own feelings towards each other.
  • With a Friend and a Stranger: Amongst the Agnian trio, Mio and Sena had already known each other since their days in their old colony, but Taion is a relative newcomer to their group. True to this, he ends up taking the longest to defrost to everyone else.

The Ouroboros

Duo Tropes

    Noah & Mio
  • Always with You: Even as their worlds separate and they risk never seeing each other again, they each assure the other that wherever they are, they will not forget them as their feelings are forever interlinked.
  • Babies Make Everything Better: Subverted. One of their past incarnations ran away together instead of becoming Ouroboros. They had a son together and were clearly happy about it, but Mio dying from her time running out a few years after giving birth is one of the factors that led to Noah becoming N.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Near the end of the game they share a long, sweet goodbye kiss in front of the rising sun before their worlds separate, pledging that their separation won't be forever.
  • Cowardice Callout: When Noah and N clash at the beginning of Chapter 6, the former calls the latter a coward for choosing to submit to Z and join Moebius rather than fight like he has.
  • Duality Motif: Unlike the rest of Ouroboros, both Noah and Mio have major connections with Moebius due to N and M. It comes to the point that after certain late story events, their Irises feature combined Ouroboros and Moebius rings.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: While they have the Ouroboros rings in their Irises along with their friends, later on in the story both Noah and Mio gain the combined Ouroboros and Moebius symbols as a result of merges with their Moebius counterparts, N and M. Though in the case of the latter, it's more of Mio gaining M's immortal Moebius body than an actual merge like with Noah and N.
  • Expy: Noah and Mio bear a lot of similarities to Fei and Elly from Xenogears, being introduced as enemies before joining forces. Noah's ponytail haircut resembles Fei's, and Mio eventually gains waist length hair like Elly after inheriting M's body. It's eventually revealed that the two are eternal lovers caught up in a reincarnation cycle, and two of the game's primary antagonists are their previous incarnations.
  • Headache of Doom: Noah and Mio experience intense headaches whenever they are in proximity of Consuls N and M. This is because N and M are their previous incarnations respectively, as well as parts of their own split souls, causing a painful resonating effect (though they seem to get used to it after a few encounters).
  • Heel–Face Reincarnation: Noah and Mio are the reincarnations of N and M, and are much more heroic than their predecessors. Downplayed, in that they exist at the same time as their previous incarnations, but they are said to be N and M's ideals and dreams that were cast off when they became Moebius. This trope is also downplayed in the case of M, who is only Forced into Evil, but M still considers Mio to be her better counterpart, and was willing to die to ensure that Mio survives to defeat Moebius.
  • The Hero: Both of them fulfill this role, being the male and female leads with much of the story revolving around their personal conflicts, desires, and motivations.
  • In Spite of a Nail: It's implied that no matter what happens in a given cycle, Noah and Mio will meet, abandon their respective nations, and get involved with the Lost Numbers. It is also the case that Noah will outlive Mio, or he dies shortly after her. It's this fact that drives N to become part of Moebius, as he accepted them as being unstoppable and chose instead to live an eternity with his Mio. Noah, by keeping to his ideals, breaks this cycle, and with M's gambit coming to fruition, they are able to finally defeat Moebius.
  • Interspecies Romance: Noah is a Homs, and Mio is a a Gormotti, yet they love each other greatly, and will do anything just to be with each other. Downplayed in that neither are really aware that they belong to different species entirely; distinctive features of Homs, Gormotti, High Entia, Flesh/Blade Eaters, Machina, and Blades are an Unusually Uninteresting Sight to all of Aionios, so these "interspecies" aspect of their relationship is never really touched upon. Even the great-grandchildren of their previous incarnations have these distinct differences (Matthew looking like a regular Homs and Na'el having Gormotti ears) and yet despite being siblings, it's never portrayed as being anything out of the ordinary.
  • Last-Minute Baby Naming: One of their past incarnations had a son together. That version of Mio named the baby shortly after he was born.
  • Love Transcends Spacetime: Late-game events reveals that despite their opposite circumstances, many of Noah and Mio's previous incarnations found themselves and fell in love with each other, a fact which fascinates Z. The space part is implied to be literal in the ending, as Noah's original incarnation disappears out of the blue when the two worlds fuse back into one. note
  • Now or Never Kiss: In the ending, shortly before Alrest and Bionis split up, Noah and Mio share their first kiss while promising they will meet again.
  • Paradox Person: Noah and Mio are not supposed to exist in the current cycle, as their past incarnations N and M were reborn as immortal Moebius. They are the only people in Aionios to exist alongside their past lives. This is explained as them having been formed from the cast off ideals and dreams left behind by the Noah and Mio who became Moebius (and themselves became little more than a coalescence of regret), that their essence essentially split off from the originals (and upon Moebius Mio and Noah's deaths they apparently merge back together).
  • Reincarnation Romance: In many cycles, Noah and Mio find each other, fall in love, and defect from their home countries, only to die and start over. Deconstructed: when N learns of this, he is distraught in how their lives are in an endless cycle of misery, and joins Moebius to live in the "now" forever. It is implied in the ending that their romance persists even when the Bionis and Alrest are made separate again.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity:
    • Noah and Mio are the most responsible for helping Ghondor break out of her cynicism by impressing her with the strength of their ideals.
    • Noah and Mio's very existence is what spurs M to initiate the last phase of her plan to defeat Moebius, and near the very end of the game, Noah's Forgiveness is what ultimately snaps N out of his villainy.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Noah and Mio are from rivaling factions who are always at war with each other, which is why, at first, their relationship is seen as taboo. However, by the time the game starts, Mio only has about three months to live, so their time together is going to be cut short. It turns out, that Noah and Mio were always destined to fall in love, as it has happened in all of their lifetimes, but it always gets cut short as they inevitably die. This is why N (an alternate version of Noah) is a Moebius, since he saw it as the only way for him to be with Mio and have their relationship actually last. When the gang finally defeat Z and restore the worlds, even then, Noah and Mio’s blossoming relationship has to end yet again, as they must part to their original worlds.
  • Supernaturally Young Parent: Tying into their Tangled Family Tree, since Noah and Mio are technically the same people as N and M respectively, and N and M had a son centuries before Noah and Mio were “conceived”, this makes them younger than their descendants.
  • Tangled Family Tree: With Future Redeemed revealing that N and M are the original Vandhams, this... completely messes up their lineage. It's pretty straightforward at first: Ghondor is N and M's son, Ghondor is Matthew and Na'el's grandfather, Guernica is Matthew's descendant, and then Monica and Ghondor are Guernica's daughter and granddaughter respectively. However, Noah and Mio are parts of N and M, thus still technically being the same people, though Noah and Mio were born centuries after their original "parts." However, since they are only 18 and 19 biological years old respectively (9 and 10 on a technicality level respectively), this means that the two of them are actually younger than their descendants! And that's not even getting into all the Ambiguously Related stuff they've got going on.
  • Unique Protagonist Asset: Noah and Mio in particular gain certain power-ups and abilities that the rest of the party do not:
    • Noah's Veiled Sword has Lucky Seven within it, giving it a different model from the rest of his class inheritors, which just have a replica of the Veiled Sword.
    • After Noah finally unsheathes Lucky Seven in Chapter 2, he gains a new Talent Art in the form of "Infinity Blade." It is also, for a long time in gameplay, the only time a party member can have a Talent Art different from their current class'.
    • At the start of Chapter 6, Noah and Mio obtain new Talent Arts. Noah's "Unlimited Sword" Talent Art allows him to fully use Lucky Seven in battle with a slew of new Arts that change depending on his current role as well as an additional new Talent Art, "Final Lucky Seven," which is its own Driver Combo. Mio, meanwhile, gains "Dominion Flower" as a Talent Art.
    • Noah and Mio are the Class Inheritors of the Royal Summoner and the Lifesage respectively.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Almost from the start there are moments between Noah and Mio, but it's not until much later that they come to realize that this represents romantic love. Before infiltrating Keves Castle the two exchange their Off-seer flutes, which is treated as an intimate gesture, although Noah doesn't understand why it's awkward at the time. Later, at the City when they see a couple kissing in the City both glance at each other before bashfully looking away, and Monica takes it as a sign of them having experienced feelings related to love before learning of the concept formally.

    Eunie & Taion
  • Beta Couple: In contrast to the much more melodramatic romance between Noah and Mio which deals with various aspects of The Power of Love, including even Destructive Romance where their past lives are concerned, Taion and Eunie's ambiguous attraction for each other is a lot more lighthearted and lowkey. Most of the focus is on their efforts to understand and uplift each other. Although Eunie does appear to experience some mild envy towards a reborn Nimue, it's mostly Played for Laughs and is nowhere as possessive as N's behavior towards M(io), focusing instead more on how she can cheer Taion up.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Downplayed. While their conflicting personalities and initial hostilities towards one another in the beginning suggest they will have this kind of relationship between them for much of the game, after they start to open up to one another their relationship turns more mutually affectionate and less combative, although between Eunie's pride and Taion's obliviousness, neither would admit it. While they continue to bicker past that point, it's treated more as playful ribbing between friends than anything else.
  • Calming Tea: Sometimes they can be seen drinking tea together when resting at a campsite. When Eunie experiences flashbacks of her death in one of her past lives, Taion offers her some tea to calm her nerves and admits he drinks it for the same reason.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The two have a tendency to belittle other characters the most often, and they get off to a very bad start with each other because of it. But as the story progresses it's clear they're both much kinder and understanding people than they let on, with Eunie's overconfident persona being her way of dealing with a lot of her fears and insecurities, and Taion's overly harsh and critical attitude turning out to be his own way of showing his concern for everyone else. The two also learn to soften their initial antagonism towards one another into becoming mutually supportive of one another whenever they're troubled.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Eunie is a brash and aggressive Ladette with Tsurime Eyes and little in the way of proper manners, while Taion is a somewhat feminine-looking bookworm with Tareme Eyes whose reserved demeanor is a cover for his emotional sensitivity and lack of confidence. Relatedly, Eunie tends to take the reins as the more dominant member of their Ouroboros fusion. Likewise, they react very differently to the subject of children and babies, with Taion experiencing Cuteness Overload, while Eunie seems to perceive them as a quirky commodity.
  • Odd Couple: They are initially the most mismatched duo of the heroes, with one being an extrovert who wears her emotions on her sleeve and who tends to act first and think later, and the other being a cool introvert who is cautious to the point of inaction. As time grows they end up realizing that they're more similar than they thought due to their shared experiences as child soldiers and this is what helps them to grow closer as friends.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Not with each other, but with their friends. Eunie has traveled with Noah and Lanz ever since they were young and continued to stick by them through thick and thin from the game's start to finish. Despite this, Eunie is never shown to have any sexual interest in either of them, and vice versa. Taion hasn't been traveling with Mio and Sena as much as Eunie has with her friends, but it's very clear that Taion is incredibly close to both of them, with no romance involved.
  • Power Floats: Their Ouroboros forms are capable of floating, and their arts in those forms focus on buffing their allies or debuffing their enemies.
  • Ship Tease: While they are not an Official Couple like Noah and Mio, several scenes tease them as having burgeoning feelings for each other despite their frequent clashes together.
    • After Taion unlocks the ability to initiate his own Ouroboros Interlink, his Mondo take a more advanced form when in that mode that deliberately incorporates Eunie's wings into them, indicating her influence on him.
    • Early in chapter 6 Eunie notes in a scene that gets special attention from the camera that she can be more optimistic now since she has "a reliable guy to stand with [her]." Taion is visibly flustered and asks that she outright confirm she is talking about him, Eunie teasingly noting it's a secret.
    • During Taion's Ascension Quest Eunie seems oddly preoccupied with Taion's attachment to a reborn Nimue and the qualities he likes in her, and even ponders at one point if she could be more like Nimue. Her frustration at Taion is noticeable enough that even Mio comments on it, noting that she's acting "very 'Eunie'".
    • At the end of the game Taion sort of freaks out when Eunie teasingly calls him her fourth best bud, obsessing over who are the ones who rank above him, wondering why he is only listing men (i.e. potential romantic rivals), and then pleads that Eunie give him a higher rank. Eunie says she'll think about it, in a manner that could be seen as flirtatious.
  • Tragic Keepsake: They both carry something that reminds them of their past in an initially negative way. Eunie's is the dog tag worn by her previous incarnation, while Taion's is Nimue's pocket watch.
  • Tsundere: Both characters fit this archetype in different ways:
    • Eunie is the hotheaded flavor of tsundere, who has a bad temper and enjoys trash-talking and teasing the rest of the party. However, she does care for them underneath her gruff exterior, and as she grows closer to Taion she has a few moments of unexpected tenderness towards him that catch him by surprise, before quickly recomposing herself. She also gets very flustered around Ashera, with whom she shares a lot of Homoerotic Subtext, and it takes a lot to get her to admit that the two are more alike than they initially thought.
    • Taion leans towards the icy and aloof flavor of tsundere, often coming off as a harsh Stoic to cover for his deep insecurities. He becomes easily flustered when emotionally caught off guard, such as when he comes across a newborn baby for the first time, or when Lanz offers him a high five to celebrate their growing friendship, only for Taion to retreat into his icy shell, although Lanz gets that he's putting on airs and isn't as mean as he presents himself as.

    Lanz & Sena
  • Birds of a Feather: They almost immediately guess that they're each other's fusion partner on the sole basis that they're both giant meatheads, even before actually unlocking the ability in question. Over the course of the game they proceed to forge a very thick friendship, to the point of not even needing words to coordinate. They bond over their similar insecurities as well, with the downside that they at one point enable each other's self-destructive behaviors in an effort to be useful the only way they believe they can be. After seeing all the pain this causes they decide to use their similarities to support each other more constructively.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Despite being the burly duo of the team, Lanz and Sena are also very deeply empathetic. While Sena tends to show her concern on the surface, Lanz hides his affectionate side.
  • Death Seeker: A downplayed example. Neither of them want to die necessarily, but for a good portion of the story they are convinced that ultimately giving their lives for their friends is going to be the only way they can contribute best and prove their worth as "proud failures." They are outright initially depressed when their Heroic Sacrifice doesn't take, seeing it as yet another failure on their part.
  • Ditzy Genius: While they're not book-smart like the rest of the party, they're also not dumber than a bag of rocks, and are pretty emotionally intelligent and receptive towards others.
  • Dumb Muscle: Lanz and Sena are the physically strongest members of the party but are also generally the least intelligent pair of the group, often getting teased for being meatheads and leaving the strategizing to the rest of the team. Lanz in particular gets the brunt of Eunie's insults and Sena is shown having trouble pronouncing certain words, such as pronouncing 'conscience' as 'con science'. In game, they are tied for having the lowest Tactical Points in Chain Attacks, and since TP are treated as a measure of a character's battle intelligence, the implications are that these two are the most Book Dumb of the main cast.
  • Fitness Nut: They both like to work out when resting at a campsite. While Sena's interest is a hobby, Lanz works out as coping mechanism.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: The two of them try to stop N by grabbing him and launching themselves in Interlink form into the air, in an attempt to destroy them with the inevitable overclocking explosion from staying Interlinked for too long. Fortunately, their attempt is foiled by X, although unfortunately, the whole group ends up being captured shortly after instead.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Lanz, the biggest person in the main party, forms an Ouroboros with Sena, the smallest person in the party.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Lanz and Sena’s relationship appears to be this. They are the only Ouroboros pair who do not show explicit romantic feelings for each other or obvious Ship Tease to hint at it, instead being depicted more akin to extremely close friends and workout partners.
  • Taking You with Me: Attempt this on N by taking advantage of the fight against him overheating their Interlink to dangerous levels. Had X not sealed away their powers at the last second, all three would've perished in an Annihilation Event.

"If the world holds our lives back, I will end it! It's as simple as that!"

The "off-seer" of Colony 9's special forces from Keves and one of the two protagonists of the story.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: At the very end of the game, after Noah defeats and merges with N, he unlocks his final Art, "Harmonic Wave". It is one of the most powerful Arts in the game, and has differing effects based on the class that Noah is currently using.
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Lucky Seven, also referred to by characters familiar with it as the Sword of Origin. According to Riku, it was forged by seven Nopon blacksmiths (though in reality it was actually forged by Melia) and is part of a series of powerful weapons, among which is its counterpart and sister sword, the Sword of the End (coincidentally wielded by Consul N, a previous incarnation of Noah). When Lanz attempted to strike it at Riku's behest, his Blade was the one getting cut in half. It's for this reason that Noah keeps it sheathed inside his Veiled Sword as a last resort. Because it's so powerful, when you actually get to use it in combat with Noah's Unlimited Sword Talent Art, Noah actually flips the sword around to its dull side when fighting human enemies, so as to not completely obliterate them, although that doesn't make it weaker or anything. Fighting monsters, machines, and especially Moebius however, is fair game, and he wields it like normal. Lucky Seven is even capable of slicing through immaterial things such as Moebius S's time fields. This is because it is made in part using metal from Origin.
  • Ace Custom: His Veiled Sword's default form is actually the generic Kevesi sword with a frayed red coat of paint over it, but is customized by Riku to hide Lucky Seven inside. Late in the game, it can be customized again by the Legendary Nopon into the more elaborate Truthsinger.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: Why he pretended to be unable to summon his Blade while in his first term until Riku called him out on it — not out of fear of fighting, but of what he might have to do just to survive in Aionios. Riku explicitly takes this as proof that Noah is "hero material" and can be trusted with the significantly more deadly Lucky Seven; even then, it takes a major Godzilla Threshold for Noah to unleash the latter for the first time, and story-wise the sword generally sees more use wrecking Flame Clocks than actual fighting. Late-game events prompt Noah to fully embrace his destructive potential, but it's directed more at Moebius and Aionios as a whole.
  • All-Loving Hero: He tries his best to see the good in everyone, and one of his ultimate goals is to live in a world where Keves and Agnus can live together peacefully.
  • Ambiguous Situation: During The Stinger, it's unclear what happens to his original self as he seems to disappear after following the off-seer melody he hears in Alcamoth. Future Redeemed shows the two worlds successfully merge together without issue, furthering the ambiguity.
  • Arch-Enemy: N appears to regard Noah as his greatest enemy after M switches with Mio to save the latter, which results in the former's death. It isn't mutual, however, as Noah appears to have Sympathy for the Devil.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: He gains Infinity Blade as a Talent Art, which allows him to deal damage that ignores defenses.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: When he faces against Mio, despite the latter's speed advantage he is able to get a good hit in by using her rhythm to predict her movement. This is also reflected by his Tactical Points being only behind Taion and ahead of the rest of the party.
  • Back Stab: His Swordfighter class focuses on attacking enemies on the sides and back.
  • The Bard: As an off-seer, he was trained to play his flute to allow the souls of the departed to pass on to the beyond. He is also sometimes seen playing it at camp with Mio.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Noah may be an incredibly kind hero who will help just about anyone in need, but if someone hurts his friends, then he can get incredibly angry.
  • Bifurcated Weapon: Within Noah's Veiled Sword is a smaller and even sharper sword, Lucky Seven. In his Ouroboros form he wields a sword that can split down the middle into two identical swords, as well as being able to transform into wings or a surfboard.
  • BFS: While the Veiled Sword is already pretty large, the upgraded version Truthsinger is roughly about as long as Noah is tall.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: The short and slender Little Guy to Lanz's tall and muscular Big.
  • Big "NO!": When Mio supposedly Disappears into Light, Noah, desperate to see her again, lets out a huge one as he’s forced to watch her die.
  • Body Motifs: His hands. One of the key features of his design is that his H-shaped mark that indicates his terms is located on the back of his left hand. He also uses his hands to be an off-seer as well as using his sword.
  • Boring, but Practical: Noah's Swordfighter class is fairly no-frills and has extremely straightforward Arts and Skills, most of which work towards boosting its global damage output directly. It also receives a flat bonus to damage against Bosses and Unique Monsters, who tend to have the most HP anyway, causing it to retain a high amount of usefulness throughout the game.
  • Break the Cutie: This happens big time at the end of chapter 5. When the gang are captured by N, Noah absolutely loses it, as he and his friends are in a separate cell from Mio, and he can’t be there with her for her final moments. He spends weeks punching his cell, which leaves his knuckles all bloody. He is especially in a bad place when Mio is about to die, and all he can do is watch.
  • Character Development: Although Noah stated out as a kind person who respects his enemies, over the course of his journey, he learns that Agnus lives matter just as much Keves lives. This turns him into someone who is willing to stand up to any foe who hurts any innocent bystanders.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: To the protagonists of the previous games:
    • Like Shulk in the first Xenoblade Chronicles, Noah has military training owing to Keves' status as being perpetually locked in war. That said, Noah would rather not fight if possible and has the job of sending off the departed spirits of the dead. Shulk was willing to fight other Homs, but not outright kill them, and was more interested in tinkering with machinery (whereas Noah's passions lie more in the arts). Regarding their relationship with the antagonists, Shulk grew to vehemently despise the Mechon after Fiora's "death" and their continued atrocities across Bionis while Noah never had any kind of hatred or resentment towards Agnus, even sending off their dead despite being an off-seer for Keves, his resentment instead being reserved for Moebius. That said, he's similar enough to Shulk that he receives a variation of his outfit as his Nostalgia costume.
    • Rex was a working-class salvager who initially had a simplistic view of the world due to his young age and, by all accounts, got involved in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 by accepting the right job at the wrong time. Noah is an artist and intellectual with a more nuanced view of the world, having lived in a country that's been at war for who knows how long and raised as a Child Soldier whose role in the story is sparked by the appearance of a previously unknown third faction attempting to get both sides to stop fighting.
  • Cool Sword: Noah's Veiled Sword as a Swordfighter is clearly meant to evoke the Monado and Pyra's Aegis sword from 1 and 2 respectively. The sword also serves as a sheath containing Lucky Seven, a sword capable of slicing through a Ferronis like a knife through butter. Finally, he awakens the Origin Blade at the beginning of Chapter 6, though this sword is only used in his Ouroboros form. It's implied that the reason the Veiled Sword is able to contain Lucky Seven is because it contains the core crystal of Pneuma just as Matthew's Ouroboros Knuckles did.
  • Detect Evil: Noah's signature Lucky Seven/Sword of the End vibrates in the presence of a member of Moebius. In Side Story: Mio, he uses it to amplify their off-seeing melody and free Miyabi from Y's control and restore her memories.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: Played with. While Noah and Mio bond and even start to get romantically interested in each other by the end of it all, since they are from different worlds, they must part ways, and Noah cannot stay with Mio in the end.
  • Do I Really Sound Like That?: When Eunie mocks his sense of duty as an off-seer, he asks her if he sounds as deep as she implied to her annoyance.
  • Due to the Dead: Believes in sending off soldiers after they die no matter what faction they're part of.
  • Enlightenment Superpower: As a result of N's merger with Noah, Noah gains "Harmonic Wave" as the final Art to round out "Unlimited Sword."
  • Establishing Character Moment: At the very beginning of the game, when Colony 9 defeats Colony Sigma, although most of the troops head back home immediately, Noah decides to stay and send off the enemy troops. Although his friends object to this, this moment shows that he respects his enemies and how much he hates fighting these needless wars.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: Most of the Moebius. Like his friends, Noah is absolutely appalled by how the Moebius have absolutely no regard for human life, which is why he is so dead set on stopping them.
  • Exact Words: In a flashback, a younger Noah is picked on by Garvel's group for not using his Blade. One of them says he's better off using a Nopon weapon. After this fight Riku gives him the Lucky Seven, which was forged by seven legendary Nopon.
  • Expy: Of Fei Fong Wong from Xenogears, as they are both ponytailed Reluctant Warriors with a passion for the arts and who seek to end a destructive war by uncovering its enigmatic origins. Noah's Ouroboros form is also based on Fei's gear Weltall, and he shares a name with the protagonist of the prototype version of Xenogears that went on to become Fei. He also incorporates some aspects of latter Uzuki archetypes, especially Dunban and Jin (who is also indirectly a Fei Expy by way of Lacan) due to his connection with N, a more direct Jin Expy.
  • Fantasy Metals: The Lucky Seven is made out of the seven metals of Origin, the most powerful metals in Aionios. This makes Noah’s sword the only thing that can break the Flame Clocks.
  • Forced to Watch: While N forces all of the main gang to watch Mio as she Disappears into Light, Noah especially, since he’s the one closest to her and N wants him to feel the pain that he once felt at losing his Mio. N even mockingly throws Noah’s flute at him, knowing that he can’t even send Mio off properly.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Noah's Lucky Seven is an Absurdly Sharp Blade, which he uses to slice through Flame Clocks and through Ferronises like it's nothing. Usually used as a finishing move during cutscenes, when you eventually get access to it yourself, it's every bit as fearsome to use as it is to watch. Not only are its Arts some of the strongest in the game, if Noah is an Attacker, every single art has a chance of inflicting Doom on the target, felling them instantly.
  • Gemstone Assault: Noah's "Unlimited Sword" technique gives him a few arts that involve creating white crystals and using them against his opponents.
  • Genius Bruiser: Noah is a rather strong character, as his default class is of the attacker type, but he's also implied to be the smartest member of the Keves trio, as evidenced by him having the highest TP of any of the main party besides Taion.
  • Giver of Lame Names:
    • Noah considers himself not that great at giving names to things, which is why he couldn't come up with a new name for the Lucky Seven. While the sword has another cooler name, the Sword of the End, what Noah wanted to name it is never revealed. Looking at his class on the Hero Roster in the game's settings suggests that he called it Truthsinger. This is a trait he shares with N, as one of his past selves asked Mio to name their son due to this trope.
    • Played for Laughs in a discussion about nicknames, where he suggests that Taion's nickname should be Tai-On. The latter incredulously points out that's just his name.
  • The Gloves Come Off: While ironically for the trope title the rest of his Blade forms into a gauntlet around his left arm, Noah's attacks become a lot more powerful when he uses the Sword of the End comprising the hilt.
Noah: Sorry, but I can't go easy on you!
  • Good Counterpart: To N. N is characterized by his selfishness, since he’s willing to do horrible things such as abandoning his friends and committing genocide purely to be with M. Noah is characterized by his selflessness, since even though he is in love with Mio, he never lets his love make him perform amoral acts. He’ll always stick by his friends, and he never hesitates to help someone in need.
  • Good Is Not Soft: While he abhors all the fighting and war in Aionios, he knows that if he doesn't fight he and his friends will die. And when O and P cause Ethel and Camuravi's deaths, he has no objections to killing them and refuses to send them off, a fate he usually wouldn't condemn anyone to (their crimes were arguably not any worse than K's, but as he puts it he's only human and his kindness has limits when it comes to personal offenses, in this case contributing to Ethel's death).
  • Heel Realization: Gets very upset over how close he came to repeating N's fate and choosing the Endless Now when faced with losing Mio forever. This later allows him to accept N as part of himself despite the latter's previous actions.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His default class is Swordfighter that uses the Veiled Sword, a futuristic red sword, not unlike the Monado Replica EX or the Aegis.
  • Heroic BSoD: When N defeats the party and imprisons them to make them watch as Mio's time dwindles, Noah takes it the hardest, beating his knuckles bloody trying to find any way to escape and when that fails, being so despondent that he refuses to eat. When N mockingly gives him his flute to send Mio off during her Homecoming, he is unable to find the strength. After that, when Mio seemingly dies, Noah nearly crosses the Despair Event Horizon as he screams her name before being seemingly executed by N. While a Secret Test of Character within his mind shows he has the will to live on and keep to his principles even if its without Mio, it takes M revealing herself to actually be Mio, who manages to use M's power to stop N from beheading Noah, to get him fully out of his despair.
  • Heroic Build: Although not as much as Lanz, there are still a few moments that suggest that Noah still has quite the nice build.
  • Hero with a Unique Name: The names of the characters can range from uncommon, but still can be found in the real world to outright fantastical, but Noah stands out for being the most normal-sounding Western name in the entire game (aside from maybe Matthew).
  • Human Aliens: Noah is a member of the Homs species, who are beings from Bionis that strongly resemble human beings but are stated to be a separate species heavily dependent on Ether.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: He fights like this whenever he wields Lucky Seven and uses Tachyon Slash, drawing and slashing in one move, as the red Veiled Sword actually acts as the sheath for it. As Noah's Fallen Hero and battle hardened counterpart, N also fights like this.
  • Impossibly Cool Weapon: The Lucky Seven. Not only is it a Beam Sword that looks like the Monado as well as being an Absurdly Sharp Blade, but its exterior can be rearranged into a gauntlet for him to use while the sword can deliver swift but powerful attacks.
  • Infinite: Noah has a Talent Art named "Infinity Blade" which bears the same name as the Level IV Special of Pyra/Mythra's ascended form.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Noah has bright blue eyes that help show that just how noble of a hero that he is.
  • It Is Beyond Saving: An interesting variation in that him coming to this conclusion regarding Aionios is unambiguously a good thing. While the ability to destroy Flame Clocks initially gives Noah some hope that he can make people's lives better by removing the need for fighting and helping them survive without the support from their Queens, he gradually realizes that Aionios's cycle affects everyone in ways he cannot fix by just freeing Colonies and beating up Moebius mooks, and that the only correct choice is to let the world end and hope for the best. Of course, Aionios was technically never meant to exist in the first place.
  • Jack of All Stats: Downplayed. The characters all have slight stat differences to suit their initial starting classes, and Noah's stat distribution makes him the second or third best for all five stats, although the point differences are so small as to be unimportant in gameplay terms.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: The Lucky Seven’s a really sharp katana, one made of the strongest metals in Aionios.
  • The Leader: He is the initial established figure of Ouroboros that leads the others and handles most of the decisions after hearing out the others' opinions. Additionally, the Heroes whose classes he inherits are respected leading commanders of their colonies (Ethel, Zeon, Juniper) with the special case of Melia, who is the beloved Queen of Keves. It's implied that he has this position mostly because Lanz and Eunie initially deferred to him as his escorts. Mio holds a similar position with her group, but since she normally agrees with and defers to Noah it means Noah ends up functioning as the overall leader. Noah having been the one who first argued that the group all work and travel together also plays a part in why he's considered their leader. It's not a rigid system either, as team members will defy Noah should they decide a situation warrants it.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: After Ethel and Cammuravi are murdered, Lanz expects Noah to try to stop the party from taking revenge only for Noah to make it clear that he has no intention, and he will lead their efforts to get revenge.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He sports a prominent Samurai Ponytail unlike Shulk and Rex, has a slender build, and also has the soft features to match.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Has rather poor aptitude when it comes to leveling up Healer classes. He has C or D affinity with almost all of them, and only Medic Gunner (the class represented by his childhood friend Eunie) and Strategos make it to B.
  • Martial Pacifist: Noah is one of the few people who seeks to stop the constant war Aionios is thrust into, though he's willing to fight others to achieve this end if necessary.
  • Meaningful Name: Noah is named after the biblical figure. In The Bible, Noah was the one to save some of the animals as well as a couple of people during a disaster and guide them to a new beginning. That is essentially what Noah does in this game, as he is the one to lead the people into a new world after a disaster.
  • Messianic Archetype: Tying into Noah’s Meaningful Name, he acts as the person to lead the people into a new world. He realizes that War Is Hell, and finds a way for Keves and Agnus to live together in peace as Ouroboros.
  • Morally Superior Copy: Noah is later revealed to be the result of N's cast off hopes and dreams, but he ends up staying on the side of good rather than joining Moebius as his progenitor did.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's not at the same level as Lanz, but the tight shirt Noah wears under his jacket shows off his muscles and he's one of the prettiest males in the entire Xeno metaseries. His swimsuit is also the most revealing among the guys, as he is wearing nothing but swim shorts and his power frame.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: His official bio describes him as being very powerful despite his slim build.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • As the Kevesi protagonist, his Swordfighter class plays similarly to Shulk. He has a Break Art that works best on the side and an Art that gets stronger when he attacks the back of enemies. His Shadow Eye works the same way as Shulk's Shadow Eye, reducing enemy aggro on him and giving him a temporary damage buff. His Air Slash also has a similar animation as Shulk's own Air Slash, though it has a different effect. His first Talent Art, Overclock Buster, has him extending his Laser Blade and slamming vertically into enemies, just like Shulk's iconic Monado Buster.
    • When he unlocks the true power of the Sword of the End and uses his "Unlimited Sword" talent art, his new Arts are represented with kanji similar to Monado Arts.
    • The Talent Art when Unlimited Sword is active, Final Lucky Seven, which allows Noah to subject a target to a generally successful Smash combo, can be seen as a call back to Jin's Heavenly Disrupt from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 due to similar movements in pulling it off by a skilled swordsman.
    • Exclusive to the Swordsfighter class is the Monado skin, which can be accessible by scanning a Shulk amiibo or clearing the story for the first time.
  • Nice Guy: Almost a series tradition now, Noah is generally a pleasant guy like previous protagonists Shulk and Rex.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: After N captures and imprisons the gang and he nearly kills Mio, Noah becomes afraid of N and what he could potentially do to him. After growing further into his journey, he is able to face N without fear during their final confrontation.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Noah's kindness and restraint do have their limits. At the end of Triton's Ascension Quest, when Eunie asks if she can punch Triton, Noah is fed up enough with the wild goose chase that Triton led them on to say yes. "Just one."
    • When it comes to comedic moments Noah is normally content to simply observe the crazy antics his friends go through or act as the Straight Man to them, but he sometimes ends up going along with it. In one case he jumps into the water on top of the girls the same way Lanz did and got berated by Eunie for, in another he joins Mio in some playful teasing of Taion over doing his chores for him (featuring them both giving him prolonged close-eyed smiles).
  • Obfuscating Disability: While those living in Aionios can summon Blades at will, there are a select few that cannot and are generally looked down upon for their perceived defect, and for almost the entirety of his first term Noah pretended he was among them due to his pacifistic tendencies and fear of killing, even when this made him a prime target for Garvel and his gang and benefitted him in no fashion. It wasn't until Riku called him out for his selfishness that he dropped the act.
  • One-Hit Kill: While using the "Unlimited Sword" Talent Art, if Noah is an Attacker, all of his arts have a small chance of killing an enemy instantly with a Doom status, which ignores all defenses.
  • Only Sane Man:
    • When compared to Aionios as a whole, he's the first character that we see question the futility of the Forever War, and the rest of Ouroboros eventually come to his way of thinking.
    • When compared to his childhood friends, he's the most level headed compared to the brash Lanz, snarky Eunie, and prideful Riku. After joining forces with the Agnus team, he's the Ouroboros member with the least eccentricities or insecurities. However, as the story progresses, it turns out he's Only Sane by Comparison, as he has a Secretly Selfish side, particularly when it comes to protecting Mio, something reflected in his past incarnations, including N.
  • Precision F-Strike: While he's normally got a clean mouth compared to the likes of Eunie, he tells N that he's "full of shit" while fighting him during Chapter 6.
  • Prehensile Hair: Noah's Ouroboros form's ponytail stabs at opponents for some attacks.
  • Protagonist Power-Up Privileges: Noah is the only character who can unleash Unlimited Sword, which gives him special arts that only he can use.
  • Red Is Heroic: He's a main protagonist who wears a red jacket and wields a sword that is also predominantly red.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Named for the Biblical figure Noah, who built an ark to survive the Great Flood that destroyed almost all of humanity. As it turns out, Aionios is the result of Origin, a grand ark that was created to preserve the people of both Xenoblade 1 and 2's worlds as data to save them from destruction after the worlds annihilated each other in a cataclysmic collision. It's ultimately due to Noah and the party's actions that they are able to let the Origin ark complete its mission and restore all of humanity back to life. Likewise, just as all humanity is descended from Noah in the Bible, all of the City's people are descended from a prior incarnation of Noah.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Noah does not like fighting, and ultimately wishes for a world where everyone can live in peace. He fights anyway, since he knows that defeating Moebius is the only way to achieve this peace. It's part of the reason why he throws the Lucky 7 into the ocean at the end of the game, since, with Moebius gone, their chances of peace are much higher.
  • Samurai: Noah is a very samurai-coded protagonist, with his hairstyle, and his Walking the Earth with the rest of his gang and having a personal code of honor. Ironically, he hails from Keves, which is more Western in aesthetic compared to the wutai stylings of Agnus, making him But Not Too Foreign to the Japanese audience.
  • Samurai Ponytail: Wears his long hair in a ponytail, and his official bio describes his way of holding his sword as very samurai-like.
  • Sanity Slippage: Being in prison does quite a number on his psyche. As he spends a month in the cell, completely helpless to rescue Mio, he starts to lose his mind. He continuously punches his cell, even though it is severely hurting his hands, and when Mio’s time finally comes, Noah is at his all-time low. Thankfully, when Mio is revealed to be alive after all, he quickly snaps out of it.
  • Second Hour Superpower: Very early on in the game, after the gang frees Colony 4 (the very first Colony to be free from the Flame Clocks), Noah unlocks the exclusive Art "Infinity Blade," which has him briefly remove the sheathe of the Lucky Seven for a powerful slash.
  • Secret Test of Character: Undergoes one courtesy of Mio using M's powers to project into his mind memories of his past lives and explanations of the changes he underwent due to them, all leading to her getting confirmation that this Noah she is speaking with, the one who split off from N just as she did from M is indeed not going to fall to despair and give up on his principles even if he ends up losing Mio.
  • Secretly Selfish: Several characters accuse Noah of being less than genuine about his reasons for wanting to free Aionios from the Flame Clocks. Noah does display some self-centered behavior at points, such as his insistence on off-seeing the dead, including enemies, even when the party is against it, as is the case with K. This trait of Noah's came in full force in his past incarnations, with at least one incarnation abandoning the Lost Numbers and the fight against Moebius to protect Mio, and N, who actively joined Moebius to resurrect his Mio (M) against her will. Ultimately, Noah is able to overcome this vice by staying true to his desire to change the world, even if it would cost him everything.
  • Signature Move: He gets three unique Talent Arts that only he can use.
    • The first is Infinity Blade, which has him create a powerful shockwave with Lucky Seven. He gets it pretty early on, and until other classes are ascended to Rank 20, he's gonna be the only character who can swap out his class's Talent Art for something else.
    • He later gets Unlimited Sword, which has him wield Lucky Seven for 90 seconds, giving him a completely new set of Arts to use that overrides whatever class he is currently in. Each of the Arts have different effects depending on what role his class is.
    • Final Lucky Seven is the Talent Art available during Unlimited Sword, which lets him deal immense damage by way of performing a Smash Combo all by himself.
  • The Strategist: If Noah knows an area better than Taion (e.g. Keves Castle), he will take charge when it comes to strategy. He still confirms his idea with Taion before telling everyone else to carry it out.
  • Sword of Plot Advancement: Double Subverted. Despite resembling the various Monados and Pyra's Aegis Sword, there is nothing special about the Veiled Sword besides being Noah's personal blade. The double subversion comes in when it's revealed to essentially be a sheath for the real Sword of Plot Advancement, the Lucky Seven, which is the only thing that can destroy Flame Clocks. In Chapter 6, Noah's Ouroboros form unlocks the Sword of Origin, which is said to be able to destroy Moebius and end the world.
  • Super Mode: Noah's "Unlimited Sword" Talent Art allows him to gain several strong Arts that all apply different effects depending on his class for 90 seconds. He still has a Talent Art during this mode too in Final Lucky Seven, which lets Noah perform a Smash Combo using it.
  • Symbolic Weapon Discarding: The game ends with Moebius officially being defunct and the 10-year curse being lifted, meaning that the Forever War between Keves and Agnus is officially over. With this newfound freedom, the one of the first things that Noah does is throw the Lucky Seven into the ocean. This symbolizes that, with the nations separating, his time as an Ouroboros is over, and with the war ended, he now wishes to solve his problems without violence.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: After Noah learns N’s backstory, he comes to understand why an alternate version of himself would turn evil. Although Noah represents everything that N failed to do, Noah, having also lost Mio (albeit temporarily), empathizes with N, and even admits that he may have gone a similar path had his conditions been different.
  • Team Dad: He is one of the main authoritative figures of the main party alongside Mio, and they look after the well-being of everyone in it.
  • Tears of Joy: Sheds a single tear when he finds out Mio - his Mio - didn't die. He quickly wipes it away.
  • Token Human: Noah is the only human-looking character in his initial Kevesi group. Eunie is a High Entia, and Lanz and Mwamba are Machina. However, he's a Homs, which the first game established as being slightly different to humans because they are made of and rely on Ether to survive).
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Downplayed, because even though he still retains his positive view of the world throughout the entire game, he starts to view it with a more realistic point of view as opposed to how obliviously naive he was at the beginning of the game.
  • Tricked-Out Gloves: Drawing the Sword of the End will cause his red Blade to reform into an ornate gauntlet over his left arm that has the ability to project a shield.
  • Unique Protagonist Asset: While his Veiled Sword can be replicated by his teammates through the Ouroboros class switch ability, the Lucky Seven katana inside it cannot, leaving Noah the only one capable of breaking Flame Clocks. There are other weapons with such properties in Aionios, but the only remaining one in the present day happens to belong to Noah's Evil Counterpart N.
  • The Un-Reveal: While it's mentioned that Noah wants to rename Lucky Seven, and the sword does have several alternate names given to it by other characters, what he actually renamed it to is never actually shown to the player. Future Redeemed suggests that he may have been the one to come up with the "Sword of the End" name.
  • Unstoppable Force Meets Immovable Object: His Blade is made up of two components, the Lucky Seven and Veiled Sword. While the Lucky Seven is far more powerful, being able to cut through even the armour of a Ferronis, it's too powerful to use on most threats. The Veiled Sword, while not as effective, is able to contain the immense power of Lucky Seven without being cut through itself, and when used as a gauntlet it's able to block a point blank attack from a Ferronis. It's hinted that this incredible defensive power is able to contain the Lucky Seven's destuctive capablities because it holds the Aegis core of Pneuma, just as N's version of the Veiled Sword may contain the core of Logos.
  • War Is Hell: After centuries of Keves and Agnus being locked in a Forever War, Noah goes against his conditioning and questions all of the fighting. He actively hates fighting in the war, and the journey to Swordmarch happens because of his desire to stop it.
  • Warrior Poet: Both a skilled swordsman and a talented flautist with a sincere passion for his art, including a desire to compose his own melodies. He also has a tendency to assign fanciful names to his attacks, at least going off of N's example in boss fights, and his upgraded Blade receives the rather florid name of Truthsinger.
  • Willfully Weak:
    • It was initially assumed that Noah could not summon his Blade and relied on a training sword to get by in practice. As Riku correctly surmises when he goes for a replacement sword after his old one was destroyed by Garvel, it's not that Noah couldn't summon it; it was that he lacked the spirit to fight seriously to want to use it effectively.
    • In combat, should he draw Lucky Seven, he will flip it around in order to strike human enemies with the blunt back of the sword rather than its substantially more lethal edge, which is reserved for monsters and Moebius.
  • Yandere: Deconstructed. Noah is physically protective of Mio and quick to jump to violence against anyone he perceives as a potential threat to her, and past a certain point in the story he shows the most fury in his battle quotes when Mio is injured. However, it pales in comparison to Consul N, a past incarnation of him who embodied this trope in earnest and whose fanatical behavior drove his version of Mio to suicide, and a significant portion of Noah's character development is in recognizing this harmful aspect of himself after seeing the harm the former wrought because of it, and trying to nip it in the bud with the help of his friends.

"Finding a path that lets us all live, I will make that my mission."

A woman from Agnus and one of the two protagonists who, like Noah, is an "off-seer" from Colony Gamma.
  • The Ace: A highly skilled soldier who is admired by the rest of Colony Gamma due to her fighting talent. She was initially reluctant to become an Offseer at first, feeling that it was a waste to assign such a well-performing soldier as her to support duties instead of serving on the front lines.
  • Almighty Janitor: Mio is so skilled a warrior that it's likely she would've taken her colony to Silver Rank, but despite her skills she got assigned to being an off-seer (a typically non-combative role) with Miyabi. She was initially very bitter about it, but eventually chose to embrace the role.
  • Ambiguously Related:
    • Mio looks a lot like Nia, has a similar taste in weapons (Dual rings), and even shares her Flesh Eater Core Crystal. Nia mentions during their one-on-one conversation in her Hero Quest that out of everyone she wanted to meet Mio the most while she was still in stasis, feels that it was destiny that they should meet, and is about to say more on the subject before being interrupted by the rest of the party. Mio also gets a variant of Nia's Blade form as her Nostalgia costume, and its alternate palette is based off one of Nia's own palette alts. This all strongly implies a direct relationship of some sort that's more than mere coincidence, such as her either literally being Nia's daughter or a more distant descendent from her, but it's never directly stated what that relation is. The ending reveals that Nia had a furry-eared child who is strongly implied to be Rex's, and Mio quotes Rex's philosophy when talking to Ghondor.
    • Seeing as Rex is implied to have had kids with Pyra, Mythra, and Nia, leading to hints that Glimmer is his daughter via Pyra, which would make Mio and Glimmer half-sisters back in Alrest.
  • Airplane Arms: She has her arms flared out like the wings of an airplane while running at full speed in cutscenes.
  • The Bard: Much like Noah, Mio is an off-seer, and was thus trained to play her flute to allow the souls of the departed to pass on to the beyond. She is also sometimes seen playing it at camp with Noah or- if she's in the party- Miyabi.
  • Becoming the Mask: She didn't choose to become an off-seer but was initially assigned as one despite her objections. After half-heartedly learning the melody and overseeing a couple of battles, she changes her mind and takes it much more seriously after Miyabi teaches her how important her role is.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Mio is normally pretty even-keeled, but even she has her limits:
    • When O and P brag about their Interlinked form after being responsible for Ethel and Cammuravi's deaths, she punches them so hard mid-conversation that they're sent flying into a rock without even being Interlinked, and calls them out for treating people's lives as playthings.
    • When Ghondor accuses Ouroboros of only fighting out of self-pity and to try extending their rapidly shrinking lives, she goes ballistic and talks about what being an off-seer means to her and how it and the experiences she's had in the City have convinced her to try making the best of what limited time she has left.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Is forced to do this when she and M undergo a "Freaky Friday" Flip, letting the party believe that M in Mio's body is actually her for the entire month they spend imprisoned and during the Homecoming ceremony. Only afterwards does she reveal the gambit that had taken place.
  • Cat Girl: Mio looks Gormotti, sporting feline ears, and is aligned with Agnus, which is descended from the world of Alrest. To go with this, the English dub gives her a Welsh accent like other Gormotti (hers isn't as thick as Nia's, though).
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Despite appearing to be Gormotti with a Welsh accent in the English Dub like Nia, the two are much further apart in terms of personality. While Nia is a brash and outspoken Tomboy, Mio is kind and sweet Girly Girl. Nia's role for her group is to be the team's healer, while Mio's default role is a defender, by way of being an evasion tank. Finally, Nia was just one of Rex's love interests alongside Pyra and Mythra, whereas Mio and Noah only have eyes for each other and always fall in love with each other in all of their incarnations. Ironically enough, it's very heavily implied that Nia and Mio are directly related, be it mother and daughter or some other kind of biological relation.
  • Cool Big Sis: Sena's official character bio notes that she looks up to Mio like a big sister.
  • Cute Little Fangs: She's got pronounced canines like a cat's that aren't particularly obvious until she opens her mouth.
  • Damsel in Distress: At the end of Chapter 5, with the entire party captured, Consul N cruelly invokes this by keeping Mio separate from everyone else. The rest of them are kept powerless, crushed by their complete inability to save Mio from her impending publicly execution. Though ultimately it's a subversion; Mio had already done a "Freaky Friday" Flip with M, and so she's the only Ouroboros member not in danger.
  • Dance Battler: Noah notes that her fighting style is based around the rhythm of Agnian off-seer music.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Her default class has this playstyle, with low cooldowns on her attacks for her to attack often, letting her get more aggro, which she can evade with her high Agility. Her Ouroboros Chain Attack order is even literally named this, and whenever she uses her Ouroboros form to attack, it's usually with plenty of multiple strikes at once.
  • Demonic Possession: Courtesy of M, Mio gains this power after switching bodies with her, and performs it on her own friends and other self in order to keep up appearances. It's implied that it's among the abilities Z takes back from her after the beginning of Chapter 6, as she never uses it again.
  • De-power: Overlapping with a version of Redemption Demotion. She inherits M's incredibly powerful "Freaky Friday" Flip abilities when the latter uses them to swap bodies with her, but after Mio reveals herself and rejoins the party, she notes that she can no longer access her Moebius powers. It's implied they were remotely shut down by Z.
  • Deuteragonist: If Noah is the game’s true main character, then Mio has to fill this role. Their friendship and eventual romance is one of if not, the main driving point of the entire game.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: While enraged by Ethel's death, Mio (in human form) punches O and P in their interlinked Moebius form so hard that they're sent flying into a rock despite their massive size.
  • Disappears into Light: This is what ultimately happens to her when Mio’s tenth term expires, and Noah and the rest of the gang are Forced to Watch. Subverted, since she was perfectly fine the whole time, and M was the one who really died.
  • Discard and Draw: By switching bodies with M, Mio gains M's Mind Control ability. However, after she reveals herself, Mio loses most of M's powers with the exception of Dominion Flower.
  • Disney Death: When the gang are imprisoned until Mio’s time finally comes, they are Forced to Watch as she Disappears into Light, making them think that she was Killed Off for Real. However, it turns out that Mio is alive after all, as she now has M’s body, and M was the one who really died.
  • Expressive Ears: Her ears tend to perk up when she is happy, excited or alert, and droop when she is sad or tired. In one funny scene, her ears are drooped from exhaustion and thirst in a desert until Sena notices water, causing them to flip up before she dashes to it.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: One of the few physical traits she shares with Rex is her eyes; they are bright gold rather than Nia's lighter amber shade. It's already very heavily implied that Mio is related to Nia, with the further implication that Rex is the father of Nia's child.
  • For Happiness: As her quote at the top implies, she travels with Noah so they can find a way to ensure everyone can continue living, especially when they learn destroying the Ferronis' Flame Clocks allows the colonies to continue living without the need to kill others and steal their "flames".
  • Fragile Speedster: Downplayed example:
    • As a character, Mio has average HP and lower-than-average strength compared to the rest of the party, meaning her individual attacks are not the strongest, but she has the highest Agility stat, making it difficult for enemies to hit her.
    • Likewise, the Zephyr class leans into this, attacking quickly with weak attacks which do relatively little damage, but come out and recharge at an extremely fast rate to kill the enemy through Death of a Thousand Cuts while avoiding enemy retaliation. At the same time, Zephyr also has the second highest native HP stat of the party's six starting classes to account for those situations where she does get hit.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: She and M switch bodies during the prison break, thus allowing for M to be sent off in Mio's place.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Shortly after the start of Chapter 6, when she confides in Eunie and Sena about her new hairstyle after switching bodies with M and how much of a pain it is to maintain, the player then decides on keeping her hair long or cutting it back to short. While the game implies this is a one-and-done decision, an Option opens up to allow changing Mio's hair at any time without affecting the story from that point on.
  • Girly Bruiser: She's feminine and normally quite nice, but also able to kick immense amounts of ass in hand-to-hand combat due to her Super-Strength and Super-Speed when pissed off.
  • Heroic Lineage: Nia's Hero Quest heavily implies that Mio is at least descended from Nia and quite possibly her daughter, which would also probably make her the daughter of Rex, as seen in the photo of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 cast near the end. Notably, Mio's bright gold eyes are one of the few traits she shares with Rex instead of Nia (whose eyes are a slightly different amber shade), and in the previous game hinted that Rex himself could be related to Addam Origo, extending Mio's lineage even further back if both implications are true.
  • Hey, You!: She actually does not address Noah by his name in cutscenes, gameplay, or mandatory quests after joining forces. Near the end of Chapter 5, it is hinted by M, who already switched bodies with Mio by the time the Ouroboros gang has been imprisoned until the eclipse and Mio's Homecoming, that calling Noah by name would force her to finally confront her own feelings for him and break her heart. Though it is M most likely relating her thoughts about N during the imprisonment, she is still Mio at her core and is relaying what the current Mio feels from experience. Sure enough from Chapter 6 onwards, Mio does say Noah's name, an instance being that instead of prompting him if he's prepared when she initiates Interlinking, she proclaims that with Noah, she can fight on.
  • Hidden Depths: She is good at impersonating other people. This is most apparent when she swaps bodies with M, and when she pretends to be an unposessed Taion to trick Noah.
  • Hit-and-Run Tactics: The primary gimmick of Mio's default Zephyr class. As a dodge tank, it essentially kites enemies' attention by hitting them with Aggro-drawing moves while being too agile for them to successfully strike back.
  • Important Haircut: Like her (possible) mother this is inverted courtesy of M giving Mio her body and waist length hair to go with it; Mio feels compelled to keep it as a way of honoring M. However, funnily enough, she can later choose to cut it back to her original length causing this to be a Zig-Zagging Trope.
  • In-Series Nickname: Sena refers to Mio as "Mimi".
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: She's wearing her ceremonial-looking off-seer outfit during her squad's fight with Noah's prior to getting her standard outfit.
  • Lady of War: While all of the female members of the party are on the tomboyish side, she's the most feminine among them. The story draws focus to the elegant, dance-like style with which she fights as a Zephyr, and she begins the game in a rather fancy dress.
  • Legacy Seeker: One of the biggest concerns that drives her is the desire to leave a lasting mark on the world and its people before she dies from reaching her time limit.
  • Lightning Bruiser: While her official bio emphasizes her speed and details how she uses it to attack, she is actually a tank in her default class, similar to 1s Dunban and 2's Mòrag. If anything, her HP pool is second only to Lanz. During her battle with Noah when the two halves of the party first meet, Noah mentions that she's so strong and fast that he has use all his skill just to survive, and anything less would end in his death.
  • Like Parent, Like Child:
    • Maybe. While there are strong implications that Mio is Nia's daughter, Mio doesn't act much like her. She does, however, sometimes act quite a lot like Rex, being an idealist not afraid to fight for what is right. If Mio is Nia's daughter, then Rex would be her father. There are a few moments (especially when talking to Nia) that Mio almost quotes some of Rex's lines from 2.
    • She also has a similar personality and role to Pyra, her implied step-mother, who acted as the Team Mom and primary Love Interest who is in danger multiple times.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The word mio (澪) refers to the wake of a ship in Japanese, providing a thematic connection with Noah, whose namesake famously constructed a great ark.
    • "Mio" also means "mine" in Italian and Spanish. Noah's desire to protect his Mio and N's possessiveness of M are most prominent in Chapters 5 and 6.
  • The Mole: Briefly becomes one for the Lost Numbers and Ouroboros when M switches bodies and identities with her, quietly warning the Numbers about Shania's betrayal and coordinating their evacuation from Swordmarch.
  • Ms. Exposition: After being given M's body, she also inherits her memories, and with it, a lot of information on who and what the Moebius are.
  • Musical Spoiler: At the end of Chapter 5, when you're facing M, you may notice that her battle theme is the Moebius' with the addition of a flute, an instrument associated with off-seers. It makes sense when you learn that you have been facing Mio instead of M as a part of their gambit.
  • Nice Girl: Like with Noah, she is nothing if not kind and caring to almost everyone she meets - to the point where the rest of Colony Gamma looks up to her highly.
  • Not So Above It All: Like Noah, she normally acts as a Straight Man to the rest of the party and reacts to their behavior with bemusement or good humor. However, she does lose her patience at times with their antics, revealing a rather harsh and snippy side to her personality.
Eunie: Sounds like little Miss Senior's decided to pull rank, eh? Roger that, ma'am!
    Mio: Oh shut up already.
  • Older Than They Look: She's fairly petite and youthful looking compared to the rest of the party and Heroes, but is actually one of the oldest characters in the whole game outside the Consuls and inhabitants of the City, being a few months from the end of her tenth term.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: In a camp conversation Eunie pokes fun at the time Mio handled the heat the worst out of the whole group while they were in the desert after she pokes fun at Eunie for disliking snow, and being unable to take the cold of their current location. She also makes fun of Mio for trying to deny she said such things.
Mio: ...I'll never hear the end of this, will I?
  • Paint It Black: Inverted, her upgraded Blade, the Dual Sundancers, look exactly like M's Blades, but white and green instead of black and purple, but Mio's a hero rather than an Anti-Villain who turns out to be Good All Along.
  • Please Kill Me if It Satisfies You: When confronted by Jeremy of Colony 4 over the people he lost to Agnus, Mio insists that if he wants retribution, he should take it. Jeremy relents only because he notices that Mio is close to her Homecoming anyway. That said, when he becomes desperate and she gives him another opportunity he finds he can't go through with it.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Her Ouroboros hair has long lilac hair, overlapping with Power Dyes Your Hair. If Mio keeps M's longer hairstyle starting in Chapter 6, this instead becomes Morphic Resonance.
  • Prison Changes People: When she and the others are imprisoned by N, Mio comes to terms with her imminent death when she was scared of dying beforehand. Turns out to be a subversion when it's revealed that it was really M in Mio's body.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Just about all of her clothes feature her wearing an above knee length skirt with brown tights, and she is the oldest and one of the more mature members of Ouroboros.
  • Punny Name: Similarly to how Nia's name in 2 is derived from "nyan," Mio's name comes from "meow," fitting her Cat Girl design.
  • Recurring Boss: She's fought at the beginning of the game alongside Taion and Sena, and again in the body of M.
  • Rings of Death: As shown in her character art, she wields a pair of discs pretty close in appearance to chakrams without the inner handle known as the Dual Moonblades. Separating them from a standard Deadly Disc is that she fights with them in melee (though she does throw them for her Talent Art).
  • Rollerblade Good: Her Ouroboros form uses the rings on its feet to skate around the battlefield at high speed.
  • Shared Family Quirks: She sleeps sprawled out on her back, just like Nia did in 2. Furthermore, in Future Redeemed we see that her great-grandson Matthew does the same thing.
  • She-Fu: Her fighting style involves a lot of flipping, matching the agility-based dodge tank nature of her class. This is carried over to anyone who uses her Zephyr class, which is commented on by Noah when he uses it for the first time.
  • Signature Move:
    • After swapping bodies with Consul M, she learns the unique Talent Art Dominion Flower, which does heavy piercing damage in a circle around her and inflicts Burst.
    • While anyone with the Zephyr class can use its Talent Art of Gemini Strike, once Mio's Blade is upgraded in a late-game sidequest, her version of the move (aside from being performed with the Dual Sundancers) becomes an ether-based attack rather than a physical one, making it harder to block/evade and allowing it to synergize better with ether-based classes.
  • Spanner in the Works: She as M appears before Ghondor and Monica to warn them that the City's been compromised, foiling Moebius' attempt to destroy it with Castle Agnus' Annihilator.
  • Stepford Smiler: She puts up a brave front most of the time, but she's in actuality deeply afraid of her coming death.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: One of the biggest reasons that she is assumed to be Nia's daughter is that she looks almost identical. Other than Mio's lack of Facial Markings and the shorter ears, they could be twins; there are several shots of the two right next to each other to make the comparison clear (Mio's ears are much closer to Nia's ears in Gormotti form, but Nia doesn't take that form in 3). Furthermore, rather than having Nia's amber eyes, Mio has Rex's bright gold eyes, which are a slightly different shade.
  • Stronger Than You Look: Not quite as strong as Sena, but despite her thin build with a running start she manages to punch the Interlinked O and P so hard that they're sent flying into a rock.
  • Solar and Lunar: She initially wields the Dual Moonblades, whose green portions resemble a crescent moon, which can be upgraded through a lategame quest into the Dual Sundancers.
  • Super-Hearing: As a Gormotti she naturally has sharp hearing senses and it comes in handy saving the party more than once. When Juniper first attacks the party, she's shown to detect their ambush attack on Eunie and push her out of the way, even though ambushes are stated to be Juniper's specialty.
  • Super-Speed: During the icebreaking conversation, Mio claims to be able to run 100 meters in 7 seconds, meaning she can run at over 30 mph. For comparison, the current world record for the 100-meter dash is held by Usain Bolt at 9.58 seconds, which is around 27 mph! "Super speed" indeed! Fittingly, she has the highest Agility stat of the main party.
  • Survivor's Guilt: She feels immense guilt for the fact that Miyabi sacrificed herself to save her life—double that Mio is the older of the two. Mio considers herself "living on Miyabi's time" and is part of the reason she became an off-seer.
  • Talk to the Fist: Shuts up the interlinked O and P by punching them as they start monologuing after Ethel and Cammuravi's deaths, sending them flying without even being in Ouroboros form.
  • Team Mom: She is one of the main authoritative figures of the main party alongside Noah, and they look after the well-being of everyone in it.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Shares this dynamic with Miyabi; Mio is more athletic and prepared for combat, to the point where Mio didn't even intend to become an off-seer, while Miyabi is the demure and delicate off-seer who doesn't like fighting. However, when it comes to the main party members, she's the girly-girl to Eunie and Sena's tomboys.
  • White Magician Girl: Very downplayed, especially since every party member can be every class, and especially since Mio's Healing stat is the second lowest in the party, but all four of her inherited classes are Healer types, and she has high ranks in all the other healer classes, in conjunction with her being the primary heroine and the most conventionally feminine of the party.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: While this is true for everyone in the party, Mio in particular only has about three months left in her Term. It's for this reason that Jeremy decides not to kill her when she offers her life in exchange for all the Kevesians she's killed over the years. It's ultimately subverted when she and M switch bodies and she gains an immortal Moebius-made body.

"Ready, he says. From the moment I chose this muddy path, I've been more than ready!"

Noah and Lanz's Childhood Friend with a sharp tongue and rough personality but warm heart. Also see her self-demonstrating page for a more Eunie-que perspective.
  • Accent Adaptation: Speaks in a very rough and informal manner in the original Japanese script. Adapted into a thick Cockney accent in the English dub that puts Xord to shame; she also uses more British street slang than any other character in the series.
Eunie: Just par' o' the protocol, innit?
  • Ambiguously Bi: Receives heavy Ship Tease with Taion, but also has some moments with Ashera that Sena lampshades as having Foe Romance Subtext.
  • Ambiguously Related: Going beyond the obvious species connection, Eunie notes when meeting the real Queen Melia that they both have extremely similar and unique-looking headwings, in contrast to the ones most other High Entia have, leading to the two of them noting that they are "the same", and the two undergo some bonding in Melia's Ascension Quest. Her Nostalgia costume is also based off Melia's in a way that, similar to Sena and Mio, could either be a nod at their overall inspirations, or hint at an actual familial relation between the two. At the same time, unlike with Nia, it's never mentioned whether Melia took on a consort, or whether she and her closest living relative Tyrea had children at some point before the start of the game. Her interactions with Eunie do not seem to give away any sign of them having had some kind of special relationship in the Bionis either, although it could be due to her being better at maintaining the Tough Leader Façade than Nia.
  • Ambiguous Syntax: Her calling Taion her "fourth best friend" when they are about to separate both worlds. Did she mean Taion's ranked fourth in her list of best friends (which he assumes), or is he the fourth best friend she made? There's also the fact that that the number four is significant to her due to her fondness for Fourtune Clovers. Knowing Eunie, she likely was just messing with Taion.
  • Boom Stick: Her main weapon is the Gunrod, a staff used to channel ether whose bottom end doubles as a rifle.
  • Boyish Shorthair: As a child her hair was short enough to give her an androgynous appearance, and she was as boisterous back then as she is as an adult.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: She's brash, hotheaded, and the most eager of the party to scrap for a fight.
  • Broken Ace: She was once the best sharpshooter in Colony 18, but was killed by D because her Colony was Gold Rank, which was the best Rank for a Moebius to drain life force from.
  • Broken Pedestal: Eunie especially admires the Queen of Keves, and takes pride in having head wings like her. Learning that she is a tyrant and a fake, needless to say, ruined a lot of Eunie's respect for her. Naturally, when Eunie meets the real Queen Melia Antiqua, she is ecstatic, especially when Melia acknowledges that the two have similar head wings.
  • Brutal Honesty: Eunie tends to be upfront about her opinions and isn't afraid of hiding it when she doesn't like someone, describing herself as someone who prefers to take things at face value. Used to hilarious effect with Ashera and Gray.
  • Character Tic: She'll tousle or tug one of her head wings when she's thinking or irritated.
  • Combat Medic:
    • As her official bio states, she fights using a Mix-and-Match Weapon called a "Gunrod" which she can use to heal allies, and her Medic Gunner class comes with some very hard-hitting Ether-based attacks as part of its build. Her three inherited classes especially emphasize the "combat" in Combat Medic, including a hard-hitting Glass Cannon, a Mighty Glacier Tank, and a Tank who doubles as a powerful attacker.
    • In story it's implied that she was originally meant to be a sharpshooter, as she takes that role in the Kevesi trio's flashbacks with Joran serving as the healer, and one of her previous incarnations was exactly that in Colony 18 prior to its destruction, but following his death she took his role.
  • Composite Character: Eunie represents the heroines of the first game combined into a single character. She is a Hot-Blooded tomboy childhood friend of the main hero (Fiora), a High Entia with a specialty in Ether whose weapon has a staff-like form (Melia), and her default role in battle is as a sharpshooter with a healing rifle (Sharla). Her Nostalgia costume is a nod to that fact, being most heavily based off Melia's outfit in Future Connected but with Fiora's exposed midriff and Minidress of Power incorporated into it.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character:
    • To Fiora from the first Xenoblade Chronicles. Both are the Childhood Friend of their respective main protagonists (Shulk and Noah) and both were seemingly killed by an Ax-Crazy maniac of a Starter Villain. (Mumkhar/Metal Face and D/Blackblaze Dirk) However, while Fiora is revealed to be alive in a Mechon-like body, Eunie was killed by D during his raid on Colony 18 since it had the Gold Rank and simply reincarnated into a new body as do all soldiers on Aionios who die before their Homecoming. Fiora is Shulk's love interest, whereas Eunie and Noah have a close but completely platonic bond.
    • Likewise, she serves as one to Melia. Both specialize in ether and are High Entia, but they couldn't be any more different in personality. Whereas Melia was a polite, feminine refined princess with Mystical White Hair who spoke in Received Pronunciation and buried her feelings for the sake of not troubling others, Eunie has brown hair and is a tomboyish, brash pottymouth with a working-class Cockney accent whose Brutal Honesty makes her feelings on issues easily known all the time.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Eunie has a sharp tongue and isn't afraid to speak her mind. A lot of the game's comedy comes from her wry comments at the events going on around them.
  • Discovering Your Own Dead Body: She comes across the husk of one of her past selves decades after the destruction of Colony 18 and it deeply rattles her.
  • Ditzy Genius: Noted to be very intelligent and studious in classes, but not the brightest outside of them due to her Hot-Blooded personality getting her into a lot of mishaps.
  • Dr. Jerk: Downplayed, as she's at worst a snarky tomboy who can be a bit rude to the characters she revives, but you wouldn't expect The Medic to be The Lad-ette.
  • Expressive Ears: Her head wings are known to move around expressively depending on her mood. For example Noah points out that her wings are perkier than usual when she's hanging around Queen Melia whom she idolizes, and when she's scared and cornered by D, her wings are noticeably more drooped than usual.
  • Eye Scream: It's implied that D killed her past self by impaling her through her eye. Eunie has frequent flashbacks of D's claw hovering above her eye.
  • Friend to All Children: An interesting case as the people of Keves and Agnus have no concept of children, but the early termers in Colony 9 are noted by Lanz to have always gravitated toward Eunie despite her rough speech, finding her to be an easy person to talk to. Likewise she's the first Keves soldier that the students of Colony Gamma ask to teach them.
  • Friendly Sniper: She fights with an ether-powered sniper rifle and her training emphasized her shooting abilities, while in a past life her class was Sharpshooter. She's also very boisterous and one of the most outgoing of the main party, although if you get on her bad side she'll threaten to sock you in the face.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Enjoys the idea of a good hand-to-hand brawl with people who piss her off and one of her animations at campfires has her engaging in a light bit of horseplay with Noah. In Chapter 6 she can be seen doing a combo of straightforward punches and kicks to take out the guard restraining her.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Right after Eunie says that she prefers to take things at face value, she immediately gets into a fight with Taion when she misinterprets his initial statement as him Stealth Insulting her.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Her crude behavior and belligerence are evocative of the archetype, and several of her animations have her sitting in a yankii zuwari squat position.
  • The Lad-ette: She outstrips Lanz as the crudest, rudest member of the main party.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: She is easily one of the most foul-mouthed characters, using both in-universe language like "snuff" and "spark" as well as curses from British English like "bollocks" and "arsehole", and is only beaten by Lanz in this department if his uses of in-universe profanity are included.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Her dynamic with Noah and Lanz essentially boils down to this, from way she describes the three of them as being "inseparable since [they] left the pod", and how she and Lanz bicker much like siblings would, in contrast to her Belligerent Sexual Tension with Taion.
  • The Medic: Like Taion, her starting class has her specialize in healing her allies in battle. In some cutscenes and side quests, her expertise in healing is also called upon as she's generally the one healing the injured or providing tips on healing.
  • Magikarp Power: Although Medic Gunner is rapidly outclassed by most unlockable Healer classes at its expected role, and its Arts are weighed down by the mediocre cooldowns that affect most Kevesi classes, various late-game Master Arts and Skills allow it to be repurposed into a multitasking support class with some rather powerful Ether-based damage. It's also one of only two classes (along with Troubadour) that are capable of performing an entire Burst combo completely by its lonesome, although it takes until late in the game to acquire the specific Master Arts necessary to do so.
  • Mercury's Wings: Has short wings on her head like other High Entia (though modern High Entia seem to mature at a regular human rate unlike their ancestors). It's theorized by Namuki during the Research Procedures quest that these wings are what give her and people like her (i.e. High Entia) such fine control over ether. It's noted that out of all the High Entia-descent Kevesi seen in-game, she stands out, with bigger wings that don't match her hair color, and apart from her noted similarity to Melia's own wings, but it's never commented on why she looks much different from other Kevesi High Entia.
  • Ms. Fanservice: The closest thing this game has to one among the main cast. Eunie has an hourglass figure that is accentuated by the tight jumpsuit she wears under her jacket, which is further shown off by her DLC bikini. Her Interlink form has black accents that give the appearance of a Navel-Deep Neckline, and its core is located in the navel region instead of the center of the chest like many of the other Ouroboros forms.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Among Eunie's favorite recurring exclamations and curses are references to the Keves Queen and her various body parts. While not called a god, she is seen as basically the closest thing the Kevesi people have to one and thus is used accordingly in slang, especially by Eunie. It is apparently not treated as disrespectful to do so either, and Eunie is actually a big fan of the idea of the Keves Queen at least (and is thus very happy when she learns that the Aionios Queens are real people and not just the simulacrums impersonating them in the castles).
    Eunie: Queen's wings!
    Eunie: Queen's beans!
    Eunie: Queen's paninis!
  • One of the Boys: Has been friends with Noah, Lanz, and Joran pretty much ever since they were "born" from their pods, being the only female character amongst the group. She isn't seen hanging out with other female characters until she becomes Ouroboros.
  • Past-Life Memories: Eunie has memories of a previous incarnation of herself fighting and dying against D around forty years ago, which is why she deeply fears him at first.
  • Production Throwback: Her Ouroboros form looks like an unused outfit for a Skell pilot from Xenoblade Chronicles X.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Despite her brash attitude and headstrong nature, she was actually a pretty good student.
  • Squishy Wizard: Very downplayed. Has the highest base Heal stat (which is factored into calculations for Ether-based damage) and the lowest base HP and Strength stats among the party, but since endgame stat differences are pretty minor, it's largely meaningless, especially since she inherits two Tank classes as part of her repertoire.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Has this reaction when Zoren accuses her of tricking him into defending Colony Lambda by calling him a coward, believing it was all a strategy of hers from the start. In truth Eunie hadn't thought that far ahead (as indicated by her nervously tugging at one of her wings in response to his claim) but she's happy to go with it.
  • Third-Person Person: Not always but she does frequently refer to herself in third person, mostly in assorted field lines.
Eunie: Eunie is as Eunie does.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: While she's the most boorish member of the party by far, she doesn't disdain feminine things, for example gushing about her love of cute and fuzzy animals and her hobby of collecting good luck charms.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Has upward slanting eyes and happens to be the main snarker of the party.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds:
    • Her and Lanz are known for bickering and regularly get into arguments despite being Childhood Friends.
    • Even after she and Taion get over their initial animosity and become friends, she still very much enjoys busting his chops given the opportunity.
    • Most of the Heroes whose class Eunie inherits have this dynamic with her, especially Ashera, who enjoys Eunie's threats while actively suggesting they become friends. Sena at one point outright says she can't tell if they're going to hug or kill each other.
  • White Magician Girl: Subverted. While she initially fills the standard niche of the female staff-wielding healer in combat, and comes from a species whose representatives tended to lean closer to that archetype, her personality is as far from the expected nurturing feminine supporter that you'd expect, instead being a boorish tomboy who's fond of fistfights. Furthermore, she has no S rank proficiencies in Healer classes (with the exception of her own). Note that in her previous life (the one where she was killed by D), she was a Sharpshooter rather than a Medic Gunner. It's implied she used to be an Attacker before Joran died and she decided to switch to a Healer role.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Or Aspars, in this case. It's not out of fear but rather because she finds them horrifically disgusting to the point she's noted to have almost vomited after fighting one. One humourous conversation has the party troll her with Aspar related comments, leading her to lash out at them.
  • Winged Humanoid: Eunie is implied to be a High Entia. As such, she has wings on the top of her head. They don’t move around much, and Eunie can’t use them to fly, though.

"If anything, we should be questioning all that we've thought to be true."

Another soldier of Agnus, who fights alongside Mio. He's a tactician who fights with his smarts and insight.
  • Ambiguously Human: His swimsuit from the DLC trailer shows he has a Core Crystal on his chest. However, there are no Tron Lines, the crystal is lower on his chest compared to other Blades, he is not as physically strong as other Agnians, and he has an English accent in the English dub, which together heavily implies him to be some kind of Tornan-descended human-turned-Blade Eater. There's also the more nebulous background question of just how much Alrestian Humans have in common with pre-Conduit humans, having been consciously directed by the Architect to recreate their form but via following an alternative evolutionary pathline.
  • Attack Drone: The Mondo are essentially origami-shaped Ether-powered attack drones which can cut through enemies, create a magic barrier, or explode on contact.
  • Bad Liar: In his ascension quest, he calls a reborn Nimue by her name when she hasn't introduced herself yet. When questioned on this, he says he read her dog tag, but notices too late that she isn't wearing one. Eunie lampshades this from a distance, openly questioning why Taion can't simply tell the truth.
  • Badass Bookworm: Extremely nerdy, and his intelligence and reliance on trickery in the middle of a fight is often the key to the party defeating their enemies.
  • Black and Nerdy: Depicted with Black features in a way that averts Mukokuseki compared to other dark-skinned characters in the game, voiced by a Black voice actor in the English version, and is the soft-spoken Smart Guy of Ouroboros.
  • Blatant Lies: If he's revived by Lanz, he will insist he was just clearing his head.
  • Brainy Brunet: Taion has brown hair, and he is The Smart Guy, having the highest TP of any character in the main cast.
  • Broken Bird: Practically the whole party qualifies due to the utter Crapsack World that they live in, but Taion most heavily embodies the trope's tendency to put up a barrier of cynicism and stoicism in response to deep-seated trauma as a guard against future hurt. Although he's quite prickly and rude at first, it's made clear as time goes on that his no-nonsense behavior is his way of expressing his concern for the party's wellbeing, and Isurd himself notes that Taion is a deeply sensitive and empathetic person on the inside.
  • Composite Character:
    • Taion is the latest example of the Xeno metaseries' recurring Uzuki archetype started by Citan, traditionally a highly intelligent and reserved katana wielder who serves as a Big Brother Mentor to the protagonist, as indicated by his Nostalgia costume and its alternate palette being respectively based off the awakened and default forms of Xenoblade 2's Jin, another example of the Uzuki archetype. While Taion lacks the katana (which went to Noah) and Big Brother Mentor attributes (which went to Riku), he ends up coming as a cross between the original Citan Uzuki and Billy Lee Black from Xenogears, incorporating Citan's root conceptnote , role as the The Smart Guy and Mr. Exposition, Citan's dreadful cooking ability, and implied romance with a woman from the opposing side. Similarly to Billy, he's a slim and feminine-looking Pretty Boy healer with a "cool" personality to contrast against the more Hot-Blooded member(s) of the party before settling into Vitriolic Best Buds, with Eunie and Lanz taking Bart's place.
    • Within Xenoblade, Taion incorporates several superficial elements from Akhos, most notably his starting role as a Combat Medic for the enemy Wutai trio and a toned-down version of Akhos and H.B.'s Insufferable Genius attitude at the very beginning, though he ultimately proves to be a subversion of the archetype. Ultimately his true personality is much closer to the Aegises, especially Mythra, given that he's a Tsundere Lethal Chef and a Jerk with a Heart of Gold who spends much of the story learning to stop blaming himself for a disaster that led to the death of a loved one and deal with the latent suicidal urges from his regrets. To further underscore the similarities, Taion tends to inherit Critical Hit Classes, and his favorite drink is Sirius Tea, the same as Pyra'snote . And, as noted earlier, he's heavily influenced by Jin, with whom he shares a good deal of his personality and way of thinking, to the point of his pep talk to Eunie echoing a similar statement from Jin. Likewise he's also majorly traumatized by the loss of a woman dear to him, but unlike Jin he is able to overcome his nihilistic urges through the support of all his friends.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: It's implied his main cooking issue is less with his actual technique and more with his idea of what's foodworthy, since he mentions that he favors nutritional efficiency over all else. Likewise, that he has trouble settling on sweet toppings at a food stall known for its savory Torpedo wraps is one thing; that he was trying to apply said sugary toppings directly to a sausage roll, is another. One of his "improved" recipes requires 20 herbs and 30 spices, which is immediately rubbished by Manana.
  • Crutch Character: The Tactician class is fairly useful in the early game due to being a Red Mage class with short cooldown on its Arts, including a great beginning Master Art, a wide coverage of functions including decent healing, a highly useful Evade Up buff, and helpful debuffs that most early-game enemies are highly vulnerable to and amplify its already solid Ether damage even further. However, as the game progresses enemies quickly become resistant to many of its debuffs, rendering half of its moveset useless, and the other half is outclassed by other more dedicated classes of various kinds due it to being a Master of None. It's especially apparent on Hard Mode, in which the otherwise-useless Dark Banner's Sleep debuff can be used to make crowds more manageable until the party unlocks more powerful abilities.
  • Cultured Badass: He's the most well-read and knowledgeable of the various colonies' customs among the party, and his Tactician class emphasizes his preference for long-distance fighting styles with moves centered on gracefulness over might, as lampshaded by one of his battle quotes. His personal pronoun of choice in Japanese is the masculine but polite "boku", and all three of his inherited classes are similarly associated with elegance, refinement, and Samurai-like imagery.
Taion: Sometimes, brute force is the answer!
  • A Day in the Limelight: He's the central character in most of the Chapter 3 story beats as the audience is treated to a flashback of his past and the climax fight of the chapter deals with him confronting and overcoming it.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Relatively polite and refined, but at times among the most acerbic of the main cast, frequently making sarcastic jabs at Lanz and Eunie over their goofier antics.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Starts off as the most initially hostile and conflict-prone member of Ouroboros, but gradually opens up to the rest of the party as they become more comfortable about their various insecurities, and ultimately becomes one of the more accepting of the party to outsiders. Come the ending of the game, he is the most visibly despondent of the party when they're forced to separate from one another.
  • Detect Evil: When Ouroboros struggle to fight M as she possesses each of their bodies, Taion figures out a way to tell who she's possessing by using his Mondo. In gameplay, this means a few Mondo will hover over the party member being possessed, making them attackable and have any damage dealt affect M.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: Taion is quite fond of tea-making in general and is usually the one to brew up for the party at campsites, indicative of his intellectual personality. Simultaneously he also overlaps with both the Asians Love Tea and the Brits Love Tea tropes at the same time, due to being the party member with the most stereotypically Asian characteristics and being the (stuffy) token English-accented Agnian to Mio's Welsh and Sena's American in the dub.
  • Dork in a Sweater: The token nerd of the team, and unless you beat Challenge Mode for optional outfits, always covers his top with the zipped-jacket equivalent of a thick sweater.
  • The Eeyore: The most pragmatic, but also the most pessimistic of the party, with the rest of the party frequently making fun of him and referring to him by terms like "Professor Grump" or "moodyguts" for his tendency to be a downer.
  • Elemental Powers: Several of the Tactician class's Art names refer to oceanic and weather phenomena, and its Talent Art Tidal Wave/Ioenami shares a name with the Lv. 4 Blade Special of the water-aligned Aegaeon.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Eunie enjoys Taion's flustered reactions and will go out of her way to troll him to get these kinds of responses from him.
  • Ethnic Magician: In contrast to Eunie, who fights with futuristic Magitek weapons that don't correspond to any particular real-world culture, and Mio and Sena, who are from the same nation but are physical fighters who don't use techniques associated with any particular culture, Taion is a spellcaster from the Japan-based Agnus who fights with magic based off of traditional Japanese esotericism.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Has heavily-shadowed eyes from constantly being on the alert, which Lanz lampshades in Chapter 5 as a result of him staying up all night thinking up plans based on information provided to them by the Lost Numbers.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Subverted. His behavior in the intro chapters leans in this direction due to his extremely cold pragmatism and hostile attitude towards the Keves protagonists, to the point that it seems like he will be a large source of intra-party conflict moving forward. However, his cold attitude quickly dissipates after Noah acknowledges that he's really just trying to protect the party in his own way, and his backstory shows that he's naturally a very empathetic person but buries it under a layer of hard pragmatism to Never Be Hurt Again.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: The Mondo that Taion wields in his Tactician class are depicted as capable of a great many feats in cutscenes, most often making him out to be some kind of Barrier Warrior. In-game the Tactician class is mainly a healing and Status Effects-based class, and none of its abilities are shield-related except for blocking, which every class can use.
  • Geek Physiques: Downplayed, while he does have more muscle than your average nerd due to being a Child Soldier, Taion is a lot thinner than the other two male party members and not as physically strong as his teammates, which is reflected in the Squishy Wizard nature of his base class, Tactician, and his reliance on the Mondo. This is especially apparent when he is compared to Mio and Sena. In chapter 6, when the party is freed from their captivity, Taion is the only one visibly struggling to take down his guard. The ending cutscene also suggests he's a naturally poor runner compared to the other five, having notably worse posture and stumbling over himself as he attempts to reach Eunie. That being said, he is not weak, has a toned body, and is able to use the more physically-demanding Blades and Classes with equal proficiency as the rest of the party.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: He's the smartest member of the party and during Lanz's Ascension Quest he gets unusually excited at the prospect of all the sweet toppings offered at a City food stall.
  • Glass Cannon: Downplayed. His Chain Order, Interlink, and his base and one of his inherited classes have abilities that involve lowering enemy defenses enough that it becomes easier to deal massive damage to them, but his Agility is the lowest of the party and his HP is the second lowest, meaning he's the most fragile character by a slight margin when it comes to taking hits. Likewise, both of his inherited Attacker classes are inclined towards such a playstyle, dealing extremely high damage at the expense of being on the less durable side.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: While he understands why Moebius are the way they are, he doesn't understand why the Li Garte prison warden likes to verbally abuse their prisoners. He is visibly disgusted when he hears him speak for the first time.
  • Gorgeous Garment Generation: In contrast to the other five Interlink forms, which mostly take on the appearance of heavily-armored Bio-Mechanical Lifeforms, Taion's form is dressed in an elaborate and somewhat Impractically Fancy Outfit based off traditional Japanese formalwear.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: His official profile notes that in contrast to his normally calm demeanor he's quite sharp-tongued and quick to anger whenever he gets impatient or when other characters get on his nerves. It happens a lot, especially when he's around Eunie or Lanz.
  • I Call It "Vera": He refers to his katashiro weapons as "Mondo" and dotes on them like pets.
  • Ignored Expert: When he was in Lambda, his strategy for taking on Colony 13 was mocked by his peers as overly cautious for a low-rank colony. As a result, he ignores his own advice and suggests a more aggressive strategy to Isurd and Nimue. This winds up backfiring, with Nimue ending up among the numerous casualties of the battle.
  • Insufferable Genius: Downplayed and subverted. He doesn't forcefully boast about his skills, and he's normally quite nice, but any praise at all generally gets him to smugly point out that he's always skilled in strategy — given how said praise is generally in response to him pulling off a scheme or pointing out an obscured tactical insight, it's hard to blame him. He later admits openly that it's one of the few things he has confidence in.
  • Lethal Chef: According to Manana he's not the best cook, and the main reason she learned how to cook was because of how bad he is at it.
  • Master of Illusion: His Ouroboros form is capable of disguising itself as other things using illusions, such as when he disguises himself as Eunie's form while they're fighting D.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • He's named after the Japanese lunar goddess 太陰神/Taion-jinnote  (lit. "Great Yin") in Onmyōdō. Accordingly, he is a Master of Illusion who fights with onmyōdō-themed abilities that are frequently named after yin-aligned natural phenomena. Yin is also associated with "feminine" traits, and Taion is In Touch with His Feminine Side compared to the other two male characters (and Eunie). Taion-jin is also associated with bringing fortune to intellectuals but misfortune to women, and Taion is an erudite Badass Bookworm who blames himself for Nimue's death.
    • "Mondo", the name Taion gives his katashiro weapons, is a reference to the Zen Buddhist term mondō, which refers to the written-down philosophical exchanges between masters and their pupils. Taion was trained in how to fight with them by his mentor Nimue, who wielded them herself, and her influence on him continues to be felt throughout the story.
  • Mr. Exposition: As The Smart Guy of the team, he is the most knowledgeable of the party on a great deal of information about Aionios and responsible for explaining a great deal of things about the setting and story. Being a tactician from a colony with an established espionage network, he also has a great deal of insider knowledge regarding the various colonies and their leaders.
  • Mr. Fanservice: While his default outfit is not very revealing, both of his DLC costumes emphasize his toned musculature, as does his Ouroboros Interlink, which is mentioned by Aionios Moments as having been designed to look attractive.
  • My Greatest Failure: Before coming to Colony Gamma, Taion served under Isurd and was asked to come up with a plan to assault a Keves colony. The plan he came up with was criticized by the rest of his team for being too cautious, but while Taion argued that their ideas were too risky and they lacked crucial information on their targets, Taion ultimately went with their ideas while making some adjustments. Not only did the plan end in failure, one of Taion's commanding officers and mentor, Nimue, was killed in the process. The whole incident did a number on his confidence and continued to haunt him for years.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: His DLC swimwear outfit has a plunging neckline that goes down to his navel.
  • Nerd Glasses: He wears glasses with a chunky black frame, and on top of being the main strategist of Ouroboros he also insists on calling Armu by their scientific name Armuidae.
  • Nondescript, Nasty, Nutritious: His cooking is considered to be terrible, but he claims to mix ingredients to maximize efficiency and nutrition, essentially making the Aionios version of Meal, Ready to Eat rations used by the US military.
  • Not So Above It All: He has his moments, but a shout-out to the "City Clothing" discussion where after Taion claims to be above caring about style, he gets deeply offended when Eunie calls his scarf uncool. There is also a scene at the end of Lanz's Ascension Quest where he gets positively giddy over how delicious food in the City is, describing it in excited detail.
  • Not So Stoic: There are moments where he drops his usual cool demeanor, such as when the group meets the newborn baby while they're visiting the maternity ward or when preparing to fight O & P.
Taion: Usually, I'm not one for outward displays of emotion. But not today!
  • The One Guy: Starts out as the only guy on Mio's team.
  • Paper Master: Uses origami constructs that take the form of Shinto charms called katashiro as a weapon, making protective barriers and forming them into large birds.
  • Paper Talisman: In addition to attacking directly with them, he also utilizes his Mondo in this fashion, such as sending them out to explode or inflict curses on enemies. In the fight against M he uses them to detect her as she possesses the team.
  • Please Kill Me if It Satisfies You: Taion offers his life to Isurd out of his guilt over Nimue's death. Since that Isurd was Consul J's mudpuppet, the offer doesn't go through. The real Isurd is nowhere near as resentful of Taion either.
  • Precision F-Strike: Unlike his foul-mouthed companion Eunie, he almost never uses profanities. However, he tells Shania to piss off when he's had enough of her Evil Gloating.
  • Precocious Crush: Has some complicated feelings regarding his older mentor Nimue whom he greatly admired when he was younger. It's left ambiguous if it was actually the case since Taion is such a Shipper on Deck for Nimue and Isurd, and especially since the Child Soldiers of Aionios aren't raised to have any awareness of romantic feelings, but Eunie is under the impression that this is the case after seeing his Interlink memories and his discomfort around Nimue's reborn self.
  • Punny Name: "Taion" is a transliteration of the name 太陰, or "Great Yin". While this name is a more literal reference to his Japanese sorcery abilities, Taion is also the most standout example among the cast of a 陰キャ (lit. "Yin Character"), or an introverted, gloomy, and usually geeky character whose pessimism can often bring the mood down. Essentially, he is a 太陰キャ.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: He's a soldier who wears a long orange scarf. While in the "City Clothing" Camp conversation he claims he wears it for strictly pragmatic reasons, Eunie trolls Taion into revealing that he wears it because he thinks it's cool by claiming that it sucks and letting his reaction speak for itself.
Eunie: While we're on the subject, Taion. There's something I wanted to say for a while now.
    Taion: What is it?
Eunie: Your scarf is deeply uncool.
Taion:note  What did you just say?! Repeat yourself, I dare you!
Eunie: A-ha! I knew it! You're as vain as the rest of us, you poser!
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Tends to use a lot of fancy vocabulary to reflect his role as The Smart Guy. For example, he insists on referring to Armus by their technical name of Armuidae.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: In the Japanese script, he has a tendency to pepper his normally straightforward and no-nonsense speech patterns with more "childish" and immature turns of phrase, especially when caught off-guard.
  • Squishy Wizard: Similar to Eunie, his stats distribution leans on the more frail and Ether-focused end, and in cutscenes he's shown to be somewhat less physically strong than the rest of the party. Taion's Tactician class, Ouroboros Interlink, and other character-specific abilities are all heavily themed around traditional Japanese onmyōdō and Shinto magic.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Wears a pair of glasses and his official bio notes that his role is to serve as the tactician of Mio's group.
  • The Stoic: Generally reserved in the way he expresses his emotions, although he points out to Eunie that he's not nearly as emotionless as some might think.
  • The Strategist: Described in his official bio as a brilliant tactician for the Agnus army. In game, he comes up with most tactical plans and is consulted on the few he doesn't spearhead.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: His Ouroboros form lets him use his Mondo as explosives. This is most prominent when he uses them to blow up the Annihilatior at Keves Castle.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Tends to behave in a cold and no-nonsense stoic manner, but he has a compassionate and caring side which Isurd notes and which tends to come out when he's aware of his friends dealing with their own emotional issues. In particular he tends to lose his composure the most around Eunie and Nimue.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: The second tallest playable party member after Lanz, and taller than the majority of unlockable Heroes aside from Triton and Rex. He's also highly respected by his Agnus peers for his intelligence and thoughtfulness, but also very snarky and constantly feels like he's Surrounded by Idiots.
  • Tareme Eyes: His eyes are the most heavily tilted downward among the party, particularly in his class icon, to indicate his melancholic temperament and contemplative nature.
  • Token Human: Downplayed. While the various races seen are referred to collectively as "human", Noah is a Homs (noted to be a distinct race from humans due to their ether sensitivity), Lanz is a Machina, Eunie is High Entia, Mio is a Gormotti Flesh Eater, and Sena is a pure Blade. Meanwhile, Taion is implied to be a Blade Eater similar to the Mor Ardainians and various Torna-descended peoplesnote , as he has no Tron Lines and speaks with an English accent in contrast to the usual Agnian Welsh, American, or Scottish accents, making him the closest of the party to humans from pre-Conduit Earth.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Although his strength stat is middling, he has the highest accuracy stat, allowing him to deal the most consistent damage of the party, especially when combined with the two Glass Cannon classes he inherits. Storywise, he's also shown to be less strong than the other party members in direct combat, making up for it with cleverness and planning.
  • Western Samurai: Played with. Of the cast he is the most in touch with the Japanese cultural aspects of his native Agnian culture while simultaneously also being the party member who is most evidently not of East Asian ancestry (or its equivalent) due to his design actively averting Mukokuseki.

    Lanz

Class: Heavy Guard (base)

Chain Order (Ouroboros): Greatly increases damage ratio and reduces Attacker and Healer aggro.

"What the spark are you on about?! I'm not gonna let you take the fall alone!"

Another Childhood Friend of Noah and Eunie, who fights with a great sword that doubles as a shield and a machine gun. He's very dedicated to his friends, even putting himself in danger for them.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: He has light grey and dark grey skin patterned with golden filigree, characteristics you'd find on a Machina. Namuki notes in his analysis of the Kevesi trio that Lanz's skin is almost like metal, which gives him higher pain tolerance and makes him less sensitive to physical irritants.
  • Badass Longcoat: Rocks a black longcoat as part of his military uniform, and switches to a sleeveless one after he is forced to go on the run. Both accentuate his appearance as one of the group's tough guys.
  • Beam Spam: A lot of his attacks in his Ouroboros form involve lasers, but Ray of Punishment has him fire several at the same time.
  • Beehive Barrier: His sword forms an energy shield with hexagonal segments when planted.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Lanz is definitely the goofiest member of the entire group and has has a very carefree personality. However, he’s also the muscle for a very good reason. If someone messes with someone he cares about, it’s not going to end well for them.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Naturally protective of his friends since an early age, and has an easy time bonding with younger characters. Two of the Heroes whose classes he obtains have an older-younger sibling dynamic with him. He also has a surprising aptitude for Healer-type classes, feeding into his image as a protector of others.
  • The Big Guy: He is the largest and the most muscular playable party member, and of the unlockable Heroes, only Triton is taller than him. A lot of emphasis is placed on his physical might and his stats specialize in Strength and Defense.
  • BFS: Carries around a Shieldblade, a greatsword that's wider than he is as his primary weapon, which is standard equipment for Heavy Guards. It can be upgraded later into the even larger Adamant Shell.
  • Boxing Battler: His Ouroboros form fights like a boxer in melee, using punches and bobbing and weaving to block, reflecting his default role as a Defender.
  • Buffy Speak: Frequently uses "doodad" instead of the name of the object he's referring to.
  • Butt-Monkey: Many jokes are at his expense, like when he slips and falls down a slope after telling everyone to watch out, and then serving as Noah's unwilling cushion when he does the same.
  • Covered with Scars: His right arm has a gash on it, and in the bathhouse multiple scars can be seen on his bare back, all the result of his generally reckless fighting style (as Noah notes in the same scene that he pushes himself too hard).
  • Crutch Character: Due to the player not getting a lot of Defender classes early on (Guardian Commander and the paid DLC Noponic Champion are the only Defenders the player will get till nearly Chapter 5), Lanz's Heavy Guard class is the most reliable and consistent Defender, able to maintain aggro better than Guardian Commander, and is generally more durable than Mio's Zephyr, on top of being an easy source of Topple. Once the player starts getting more Defender classes (specifically Lost Vanguard and Lone Exile), and starts getting more skills that synergize with other Defender classes, Heavy Guard begins to fall behind, and will only truly shine if the player really focuses on improving it with skills from other classes.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Has noticeably sharp canines, though not as prominent as Mio's, which could be a trait of his being a Machina.
  • Expy: Does a muscular childhood friend of the protagonist who puts himself in danger for his friends and wields a weapon doubling as a shield sound familiar? He definitely bears some resemblance to Reyn. He also has a similar English voice and accent to Reyn, has the same Talent Art as him (Mad Taunt), and one of Noah's battle quotes has him calling Lanz a "lifesaver", just as Shulk would do with Reyn. In addition he shares Reyn's trait of being the butt of other party members' teasing, especially Eunie and Taion. Naturally, he gets a variation of Reyn's outfit as his Nostalgia costume, albeit modified with elements from Egil's costume as a nod to Lanz's Machina heritage. The Aionios Moments artbook also depcts a version of him in an exact replica of Reyn's pose from Definitive Edition.
  • Fanboy: Of Ashera, whose complimenting him leads him to stutter, to the amusement of his party members.
  • Friend to All Children: Lanz tends to show his nicer side to younger characters such as Fiona and Valdi.
  • Good Is Not Nice:
    • A far cry from the Xenoblade tradition of a big, friendly musclehead, Lanz is neutral toward Noah and Mio, tentatively friendly with Sena, and constantly rude and abrasive toward pretty much everyone else, even potential allies he's just meeting. Special mention goes to his initially icy relationship with Taion.
    • After learning that Consul J is actually the Keves' group's deceased Childhood Friend Joran, he goes to Riku and requests a weapon similar to the one he gave Noah with the explicit purpose of using it against J. Riku refuses, both because Lanz did not consider asking Noah's input on the matter and that finding a weapon comparable to Lucky Seven is very difficult.
  • Heroic BSoD: He doesn't take the revelation of Consul J being none other than Joran very well; understandable given that Joran saved his life when they were trainees and his sacrifice shook Lanz heavily. It shocks him up enough, that while he seems to recompose himself, he remains conflicted for pretty much the rest of the game.
  • Hidden Depths: While its obvious early on that Lanz has some emotional baggage, just how serious is only made clear when he outright reveals he is not a confident person, but that giving the impression of being confident is basically the only way he knows to keep from just breaking down when faced with problems.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Lanz reveals to Taion and Sena that a lot of his brash overconfidence is all an act that he projects to make up for his severe, even suicidal feelings of inadequacy over his past failures and inability to protect those he cares for.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Lanz is perhaps the most abrasive of the main party, but he's also remarkably kind and supportive toward anyone he recognizes as being younger, emotionally fragile, etc.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gets several. Eunie and in the ending, Sena cheekily refers to him as "Lanzy", and Fiona gives him the Embarrassing Nickname "Lan-Lan".
  • Mechanical Lifeforms: Machina in 1 were established to be at least partially metallic in nature, and Namuki observes that Lanz's skin is more durable than the average Agnus soldier and made of something different from Eunie or Noah. No further details are given, as the group are not keen on giving him samples to test.
  • Mighty Glacier: Very downplayed, as attack animation speeds are more or less the same for all characters, and stat differences are relatively minor but his stats distribution emphasizes might and durability at the expense of accuracy and evasion. His default Heavy Guard class definitely counts due to its very slow auto-attack and Art animations.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: Like previous tank characters such as Reyn, Lin, and Tora, his sword can also be used as a shield, and like Lin it doubles as a minigun.
  • More Dakka: His weapon contains a turret that can rapidly fire shots, as seen when he uses Variable Turret.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Has a toned Heroic Build with Jiggle Physics articulation points modeled into his pectorals, and wears a revealing tank top that emphasizes his muscles. While the scenes themselves aren't presented as especially fanservicey due to the culture of Aionios, he does get two Shirtless Scenes, and offers to strip for a curious Namuki, much to the discomfort of the female party members. While his optional swimsuit ironically covers up most of his body, he also has a noticeable crotch bulge in it.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: While he does gain muscle definition by working out, flashbacks show that a younger Lanz could swing around his weapon (which would be larger than him at the time) with ease. However, he sees himself as less physically strong than the petite Sena.
  • My Greatest Failure: During Agnus' assault on Colony 14, Lanz was saved by Joran at the cost of the latter's life. While this weighs heavily on Lanz already, he also never managed to apologize for blowing up at Joran after he got himself "killed" in the trial against Garvel.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Part of the reason he gets so beaten up defending his friends is out of guilt for never apologising to Joran for treating him poorly, mixing with Parting-Words Regret.
  • The Pig-Pen: According to Riku, Lanz only bathes once a week, although Lanz denies it (all he said was that he isn't as bothered by the dirt as his other allies, which may be attributed to his Machina skin being less sensitive to it). However, if you swim in water long enough, he'll act like a swim is a viable substitute for a bath before Eunie tells him it isn't.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Of a sort. Although Lanz starts off as a strong Tank, two of his inherited classes are Healer types, including one whose costume is a Sailor Fuku, and he connects with the Hero for those classes through his strong sense of empathy.
  • Recurring Element: His official bio describes him in terms similar to Reyn, noting that he wields a shield weapon and takes damage to protect his friends, making him this series' defense tank.
  • Revenge Before Reason: After finding out Joran is alive and joined Moebius, Lanz tells Riku that he wants a weapon like Noah's Lucky Seven, but is vague with his language. Riku sees right through him and calls him out for wanting to kill Joran when he could still be reasoned with. After this conversation, Lanz doesn't ask for that kind of weapon again.
  • Skewed Priorities: Despite learning that they've all been branded as traitors thanks to Moebius, Lanz is initially more concerned about whether they'll still be able to make it to their Homecoming. It doesn't last long as the group helps him realize they have more pressing concerns at the moment.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: His default outfit includes a sleeveless long coat, showing off his muscles and adding to his imposing figure.
  • Stone Wall: The Heavy Guard class emphasizes face tanking with a high block rate at the expense of being a very slow Mighty Glacier.
  • Unable to Cry: Even when faced with heartbreak and despair, Lanz is noticeably the only party member to not cry as an adult, likely a result of his trauma and guilt from Joran's death scarring him at a young age. Though he's clearly distraught and heartbroken while imprisoned by N and later when watching Mio reach homecoming, he's the only Ouroboros that doesn't let any tears fall. This isn't presented as a strength or weakness, but rather how he deals with his grief differently from everyone else and contrasts with how overt he is when happy or angry.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Similar to Sena, he has the second-highest Strength stat but also the second-lowest Dexterity stat.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He's pretty brash and hot-headed, so he has this kind of relationship with Eunie and Riku in particular, as well as Taion when he joins the group. The three of them often take jabs at Lanz for one reason or another, usually sniping at him for being a meathead. Despite that, they're still his closest friends and comrades.
  • White Mage: Two of his inherited classes are healing-related and the third is a variable class that has the option to be set as a healer. Ironically, he has very high aptitude for learning most of the healing-based classes besides the two associated with Taion, while his growth rate for other tank classes tends to be on the lower side, meaning the game encourages him to be used as a healer.

    Sena

Sena

Voiced by: Miyuki Sato (Japanese), Rebecca LaChance (English)

Class: Ogre (base)
Blade: Comet Mallet/Meteor Smasher
Role: Attacker (base)
Chain Order: Attacks during Chain Attack gain a chance to be unblockable.
Chain Order (Ouroboros): Greatly increases damage ratio and deals defense-bypassing damage.

"The truth is, she's terrified. She needs someone to tell her that everything will be alright."

Another Agnus soldier, who, despite her petite figure, fights with a giant hammer. Although she's shy, she bears a special connection with Mio.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Refers to Mio as "Mimi" and by the end of the game Lanz as "Lanzy".
  • Alone in a Crowd: Looking through her memories, Lanz notes that while she was constantly surrounded by people, she still felt deeply lonely and isolated from others, even those who were kind to her, her own lack of confidence coloring how she viewed others treatment of her.
  • Ambiguously Related: There are some implications that she is related to 2's Brighid somehow, namely her similarly-colored Flaming Hair, and her Nostalgia costume being a modified version of Brighid's outfit. It's not exactly clear how they're related, though, since unlike most descendants of Blades, who are shown inheriting the same shape of their Core Crystals as their ancestors throughout the generations, Sena's is different from Brighid's, leaving the question of how or if she's connected more ambiguous.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: While she's technically the same age as everyone in Ouroboros not named Mio, she's the youngest looking thanks to her baby face and short height, and the group minus Lanz treats her like a younger sister.
  • Be Yourself: Her character arc is all about realizing that she should stop trying to change herself to appease others and focus on being true to herself and her own wants and needs.
  • Character Select Forcing: Do you want to perform combos on bosses and Unique Monsters at all? You'd better bring an Ogre on your team because it is the only class that can reduce enemy resistance against Break, and since Sena is the best Ogre candidate, this means you'd want her to stick with this class most of the time.
  • Cool Big Sis: She becomes a mentor figure for Segiri and the inhabitants of Colony 0, going from someone who always tried to mold herself after others into becoming someone who can be admired in her own right.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Her hammer Blades, the Comet Mallet and Meteor Smasher, have obvious space theming.
  • Cute Bruiser: She may look petite and fragile, but she wields immense physical strength, swinging around a giant hammer that's way bigger than her, and is capable of chucking an enemy Agnian soldier over her shoulder with ease. Her inherited classes reinforce this, as all three are Attacker-types associated with petite and often cute female Heroes.
  • Cuteness Overload: Gets very excited to see Ottils cracking shells on their chests, exclaiming "Oh my sparks, the cutes!" She also squees over the Pippito monster in the "Unspeakable Being" sidequest despite Riku and Manana telling them to be very careful of it.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Much of her character arc is explored in Chapter 5, exploring her inferiority complex and meeting someone she could have become if she had chosen a different path.
    • Segiri's Hero Quest and the subsequent Colony 0 sidequests have Sena serving as its effective deuteragonist as she's the most invested of Ouroboros in helping Segiri become more human, and even gets to name the other Colony 0 inhabitants.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Her major character flaw. She's willing to completely reinvent herself if it means being more liked by other people, but Mio encourages her to focus on herself.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: While they're in Colony 4, Jeremy antagonizes her and Mio for being visibly Agnian. He shows them a Tragic Keepsake from a friend, and rages that Colony Psi killed him. Sena, missing the big picture, objects by starting to say they're not to blame as they're from Gamma before Mio stops her.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Downplayed as she's normally a nice person, but at the end of a sidequest where she's been disrespected by her tutees and her co-tutor Eunie, she pressures all of them into participating in an off-screen Training from Hell.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Even though she's a member of Ouroboros and helped destroy Colony Gamma's Flame Clock, the members of Foots's team openly insult her. They learn to respect Sena when she defeats them in a mock battle, and she gets the last laugh by putting them through an off-screen Training from Hell.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Does not take Shania's betrayal of the party to Moebius well after their perceived bonding moment.
  • Exact Words: She says she and Mio have known each other since they came to Gamma. While technically true, they've known each other for a lot longer.
  • Flaming Hair: The blue tips of her hair emit a blue flame, which is implied to be because she's a Fire element Blade. It carries over to her Ouroboros form, where she has blue flames at the end of a ponytail-like appendage.
  • Foil: To Shania. Both girls were considered outcasts in their youth but eventually befriended and latched on to a girl more popular and talented than them, and their resulting inferiority complexes drove them to emulate their idols in any way they could. The only difference is that Shania couldn't let go of the past and became obsessed with surpassing Ghondor, while Sena eventually grew out of it and decided to embrace her own personal qualities.
  • Genki Girl: Definitely the most energetic of the girls, and the party at large. It's hinted at times she uses this behavior to mask her loneliness and insecurities.
  • Giant Hands of Doom: In her Ouroboros form, her Morph Weapon turns into a giant pair of hands that she can slam on the ground.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Downplayed compared to Noah, as she actually gets pretty creative with the names for the Colony 0 soldiers, but her attempts at basing these names on their original designations to match Segiri's result in one of them being called "Biffteen".
  • Glacier Waif: Lampshaded by official descriptions that contrast her petite figure with her titanic hammer, which can deal enormous combo-based damage at the expense of its Arts having very lengthy cooldowns. However, she plays this trope straight when she uses the Heavy Guard class, which is a face-tank defender class with a huge weapon.
  • Got Me Doing It: Inverted, she has a tendency to copy other character's speech patterns. Eunie calls her out on this when Sena refers to her as "love", which is what Eunie tends to call other people. It seems to be intentional, as she says Ghondor's crude language is not her style and she is rarely profane when she speaks.
  • Harping on About Harpies: Her Ouroboros form evokes the appearance of a Harpie, as it has the feminine figure, talons, and wings typical of the mythical creature.
  • Hartman Hips: Her hips are noticeably wider than her waist and shoulders, and they are also accentuated by her low-rise shorts.
  • Humongous-Headed Hammer: Sena's normal weapon of choice is the Comet Mallet, a gigantic hammer with strong but bouncy ends, as well as a round shape. It can even retract its handle and the ends can merge, creating a large, metallic ball that Sena can throw at the opponent. While Sena is best for wielding it, due to the Job System, any of the main characters can wield the Comet Mallet as well.
  • The Heart: Sena serves as the emotional center of the party, starting off with positive relationships with just about everyone else when they're still overall at the standoffish if not outright Teeth-Clenched Teamwork stage, and having perhaps one of the highest levels of emotional intelligence amongst Ouroboros even if her tactics can be lacking. She and Lanz hit it off right away despite the latter's vocal grudge against Agnians, and she's the most into the icebreaker the party has following being deemed fugitives by their respective nations, playing a subtle but important role in getting everyone to bond as opposed to simply being allies of convenience.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She thinks the world of Mio and tries to emulate her in almost every possible way. Mio naturally advises Sena to Be Yourself.
  • Hidden Depths: Beneath her boisterous exterior, she's a deeply lonely person.
  • The Ingenue: Despite being as old as the rest of the main cast (barring Mio, who is the oldest), Sena still has the innocence of a young child.
  • Irritation Is the Sincerest Form of Flattery: One of Sena's recurring traits is that she tends to imitate others around her because of her insecurities, such as adopting their Verbal Tics (Eunie's tendency towards calling others "love" and Manana's Saying Sound Effects Out Loud, for example) or copying their tastes in food, which tends to annoy them.
  • Kirk Summation: She tries to talk Shania out of destroying the city by telling her that she should do things differently to create a world that would accept her. Sena's opponent responds with an Ironic Echo that she now agrees that the two are not alike.
  • Literal-Minded: She has a tendency to take metaphors literally. Played for Laughs in a discussion preceding a quest, where she thinks her and Eunie whipping Foot's squad into shape involves literal whips.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: She has rather poor aptitude when it comes to leveling up Healer classes.
  • Mighty Glacier: Her default Ogre class has a very high Attack stat and Arts that have high damage multipliers, but slower animations and lengthy Arts cooldowns prevent her from using them too often.
  • Morph Weapon: For some of her Arts Sena can turn her hammer into a giant ball that she then hurls at the enemy, along with a barbell. In her Ouroboros form, her hammer can shift into a staff for a ranged attack.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: She loves doing muscle training, but she has little to show for it with her tiny build.
  • The Nicknamer: Sena is fond of giving affectionate nicknames to people she likes. In a Colony 0 Quest, she is asked to come up with names for everyone in the colony, who were assigned numbers instead of a real name. Not all of them were initially well-recieved: No. 15 disapproved of being called Bifteen but eventually warmed up to it.
  • One-Note Cook: She can make Onigiri that is so good that wanting more of it is Segiri's first real request. For everything else she defers to Manana or Mio.
  • Out of Focus: Unlike the rest of Ouroboros, Sena isn't the central focus of her own Hero Quest, instead being focused more on Shania and Ghondor. Shania is meant to be a Foil to Sena, and Sena still has her moments throughout the quest, but she doesn't take the spotlight.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She's very short but capable of easily tossing people twice her size over her head and wields a hammer about as big as she is as if it's as light as a feather. She's also seen pushing large rocks one handed when it takes Lanz two to do the same.
  • Plucky Girl: Played with. This is what Sena wants to be and how she presents herself, as an energetic go-getter, even saying she'd like to be seen as a plucky heroine when Lanz confronts her about her real feelings. In reality, deep down she is lonely and lacks self-confidence, hesitating for years to even believe Mio considered her a real friend and struggling to form her own identity. Her Character Development is all about growing past this.
  • Precision F-Strike: Normally Sena has the cleanest mouth amongst Ouroboros, but after seeing Consul F's callous behavior towards Segiri, she has one of her few swearing moments:
Sena: Snuff all of that, and snuff you!
  • Prehensile Hair: Her Ouroboros form's ponytail can be used as a whip.
  • Satellite Character: Deconstructed. She attempts to be one for Mio due to her admiration of her combined with her massive inferiority complex, but Mio is quick to disabuse her of that notion.
  • Scrappy Weapon: An In-Universe example occurs when she was made fun of for using her hammer. The people harassing her even suggest she's better off dual wielding guns.
  • Shrinking Violet: Mio compares a younger Sena to a shy Armu, suggesting that she wasn't always the Plucky Girl you see in the game.
  • Stepford Smiler: Projects a bubbly and excitable image to cover her deep-seated insecurities.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Sena lampshades in her icebreaking conversation with the rest of the party how she's capable of lifting far beyond her own weight despite not looking it. When she and Lanz swap classes for the first time, the latter's impressed that she can lift her hammer without a power frame, implying that it's about as heavy as it looks, and that she's even stronger than Lanz is.
  • Spikes of Doom: Her upgraded hammer, the Meteor Smasher, is covered in spikes.
  • Super-Strength: Sena is able to pull of amazing feats of strength, such as pushing rocks effortlessly with one hand, that no other character, not even Lanz, can match. It's implied to be the result of her being a Blade in nature.
  • Tank-Top Tomboy: She's a huge jock who wears a midriff-exposing tanktop.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: During one of her Arts and Lanz's Chain Art, Sena turns her hammer into a ball, throws it at the target, and it explodes. Justified by the nature of Blades, which can be dematerialized and summoned back into the user's hands at will.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: A boisterous girl that loves muscle training, but also has slight elements of a Valley Girl.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: A girl who likes muscle training, roughhousing, and wears a ponytail. Her general short haircut with a side ponytail makes her look similar to Misty, one of Nintendo's most famous tomboy characters.
  • Tron Lines: She has blue lines throughout her body. Along with the crystal in her chest and her American accent in the English dub, they point to her being a Blade or some variation on them.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Alexandria notes that Sena is very strong but lacks much in the way of finesse. This is reflected by her stat distribution, as she has the highest Strength stat but also the lowest Dexterity stat, meaning she hits the hardest but is slightly more likely to miss.
  • Valley Girl: Has some elements of this in the English localization, mostly through her use of distinctly American teenager slang and vernacular in comparison to the majority British cast around her and other American accented characters who speak more formally.
Sena: You are literally the best, Mimi!
  • Waif-Fu: Extremely petite but the physically strongest member of the cast, capable of swinging around an enormously heavy hammer and moving objects with just one hand when most other characters need two. She also does a lot of acrobatic flips while in Interlink form.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Mio or rather M in Mio's body while everyone is imprisoned, tells Sena that she is always trying so hard, has touched people's lives, and has helped save everybody on multiple occasions and, as such, she shouldn't be so hard on herself.
