Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yes to Scientist, Offal, and Hagen. As long as her brand of cruelty towards her family is unique in the series, I'll also give a slight yes to Katherine.

I think so, at least to my knowledge. And did Amos get lost in the shuffle?

As for killing her family. . . it's not common in BT, but not unheard of. Even so, it's usually done either to highlight a particular branch or generation of the family as notably messed up, or because there's genuine reasons to believe the ones in the way would be awful and assassination is the only viable method to remove them. Katherine basically kills her mom because she's in the way, and tries to kill her youngest brother because he was speaking out against her. Combined with manipulating the rest of her family to bring them down. . .

EDIT: The Mariks of the Free Worlds League almost gleefully off each other for a shot at the Captain-Generalcy. . . but they're very much the exception. The Lyrans and Suns pride themselves on being better than that.

[tup] to Rudolf Hagen and Katherine.

Important note: now that Elfen has retired from this thread, we need someone to pick up Honkai Impact 3rd if we are to get any more additions from there. Can someone please volunteer?

Less important note: is anyone here familiar with the Senran Kagura series? I need to know if Dogen, the guy I am going to EP soon, appears in any installments other than Burst, Burst RE:newal, Shinobi Versus, and the first season of the anime.

[up][up][up]He does have a page, and I checked it beforehand. It only lists him as appearing in the installments I mentioned (Portrait of Girls being essentially the Hanzo storyline of Burst). But, as has been discussed before, Wiki pages are not 100% reliable.

[up][up]There is no urgency, I just would feel comfy knowing that it is being looked over. Of no one wants to at this time, that is okay. Sorry if it looked like I was rushing everyone, that was not my intention.

Over the years, Ragyo has Soichiro hunted down and murdered when he betrayed her, and frequently subjects Satsuki to sexual abuse. Reunited with Ryuko seventeen years later, Ragyo immediately breaks her mind into subservience and later molests her mind-controlled daughter before sending her off in an attempt to kill her friends resisting Ragyo. Even when eventually defeated by Ryuko and offered a chance for reconciliation, Ragyo refuses any kinship and kills herself, cementing her status as a hollow megalomaniac whose only desire was to dominate everything under her own will.

To eclipse this, Si Fu Huang raised twelve sons and brutally conditioned them from birth to be assassins named the Brothers of Silk, having them kill him to forever preserve his legacy. A gloating Serial Rapist on his off time, Mora introduces himself throwing one of his child drug runners off a building and nearly tossing another after him when he figures out they've been nicking money, before forcing the survivor to hack off two of his own fingers to pay for the other's crime.
  • Monster & Madman, by Steve Niles, Damien Worm, et al.: Dr. John Moore, a seemingly friendly scientist who takes Frankenstein's Monster in to study, is actually Jack the Ripper. When the Monster finally turns against him to protect the "bride", Moore decides to dissect them both with a sick smile on his face, even justifying himself by saying the women were whores he was in his right to purge.
  • Trent Reager, from season 14's "Check in and Check Out", is a voyeuristic motel owner who graduates to full-on murderer due to his love of watching people. Intending to cause a nuclear meltdown using the device, Clay has Vera inject Corbin with potassium cyanide while she takes the device on his behalf. When Corbin confronts Vera over her betrayal, Clay stabs her from behind, before eventually trying to have his subordinate, Zero, shoot Corbin during their final confrontation.
  • Charlie's Angels trilogy:
    • Full Throttle: Madison Lee is a former Angel who became treacherous and turned rogue because, rather than take orders from Charles "Charlie" Townsend and work with her team, she wanted all the glory for herself. Teaming up with turncoat US Marshal Ray Carter, Madison plots with him to steal the two rings needed to access the HALO list which contains the names of everyone in the Federal Witness Protection Program, and arranges to meet with four different crime families to sell it off to the highest bidder. To obtain the ring that Carter doesn't have, Madison murders the agent who possesses it along with several others. She has volatile mob boss Seamus O'Grady, who has a personal history with Angel Dylan Sanders, released from prison so his gang can not only work for her, but target and murder another witness and then try to kill a second one, teenager Max Petroni. Once Carter arranges for the gangs to meet and gives Madison the rings back, she shoots him dead when he calls her "partner". She shoots and nearly kills Dylan and fellow Angels Natalie Cook and Alex Munday and then near the climax, she blows up the roof they're on and then spitefully tries to escape by throwing a grenade into a crowd of people at a Hollywood premiere.
    • 2019 film: John Bosley is Charlie's close friend and collaborator to the Angels who bitterly becomes an Arms Dealer after being forced to retire instead of taking over the agency. He seeks to possess the energy-saving source Callisto so he can turn it into a biological weapon that can induce fatal seizures, which he plans to sell for his own profit, contacting terrorists and crime syndicates as potential buyers. He hires the cold-blooded assassin Hodak to murder whistleblower and future Angel Elena Houghlin and ends up killing Edgar "Bosley" Dessange instead. He then has Elena's boss Peter Flemming killed for not knowing how to work Callisto and attempts to kill Angels Sabina Wilson and Jane Kano by blowing up the agency. He also nearly kills former Angel Rebekah "Boz" by shooting her. He has Hodak threaten both Elena and Alexander Brock for access to Callisto, and threatens Elena's friend and co-worker Langston when she refuses. He then attempts to activate Callisto so he can leave Elena and Langston to die.
  • Horror Stories (2012): The Big Bad in the frame narrative of the anthology is a quiet young man who also happens to be a sadistic Serial Killer with a habit of kidnapping and killing girls. Living in a house that is flooding with evidence of his crimes, he forces his newest victim, a high school student, to make him sleep with scary stories, later amusing himself by showing her a bag filled with dozens of human teeth, which he acquired by removing them from a girl's mouth while she was still alive and conscious. When the student says that she's hungry, he prepares a human organ for her to eat and even licks his finger to taste it, much to her disgust. Having a mole scientist tortured to death, once Rynark grows weary of using animals as test subjects, he threatens the kidnapped Dr. Strichman with using his daughter as a test for the virus's capabilities should an innocent scientist not be used instead. Growing bored of the US government not handing him his money, Rynark decides to launch a missile at New York, and later abandons his men to make a getaway.
    • Marko and Talia are Rynark’s Co-Dragons who gleefully participate in his plan to unleash the virus and kill billions, torturing a mole scientist to death and killing Dr. Strichman with a smile on their faces. Only in It for the Money, both Marko and Talia propose unleashing the virus on two nations and selling it as a bioweapon for profit, showing themselves as nothing but greedy sadists only out for themselves.
  • Time Renegades (2016): The nameless Serial Killer is the source of all the tragedies seen in both 1983 and 2015. In an attempt to eliminate a possible witness, he set the gym on fire with Yoon-jung's entire class inside, causing the deaths of 49 students before cutting the throat of his original target. Years later, he ruined the lives of two former students who were now married, kidnapping Hyun-joo and promising to exchange her for the evidence that could reveal his identity; even after Seung-bum complies with his demand, he simply kills his wife in front of him anyway. Discovering that Payu and Long Fei are at the Central Police Station, Collins and his crew gun down multiple police officers in the hopes of eliminating the duo, as well as capturing Tian when he realizes she is at the station. Upon losing two crew members in the assault, Collins complains about his resources being depleted. When Payu and Long Fei offer Tian in exchange for a sum of money and their freedom as a ruse, Collins hires a large number of additional mercenaries, intending to kill the duo regardless of their sincerity or lack thereof.

Dragwena enslaves and torments the children in every way imaginable: distorting their ages; forcing most of them into the horrible wilds of Ithrea to gather food for her; and wasting the lives of entire generations of children in grueling slavery to build her massive temple. Dragwena has slaughtered countless thousands of children through sadistic trials and torture in preparation to steal the magical "child-hope"—a young girl named Rachel—that will allow her to conquer Earth. Dragwena attempts to utterly massacre a group of rebellious children who call themselves the Sarren as well as everyone tangentially connected to them; tries to corrupt Rachel into a Witch who will enjoy killing children as much as she; and even when Rachel finally beats her, Dragwena homes in on her eight-year-old brother to snap his neck, vowing she won't die without killing one last child.

An Attention Whore who gets high off the infamy his crimes received, Wilkes tries to top himself by trying to murder the lover of an elderly wheelchair bound woman in front of her before killing her too and, driven by his need to beat his rival Jack, tries to callously kill Jack's apprentice Nadia out of spite.
    • Wild Justice: Sebastian Koss, a beloved crown prosecutor known for advocating victims' rights in sexual abuse cases, is actually a pedophilic Serial Killer and Serial Rapist himself. Koss uses his job as a guise to procure young victims for himself and cover up his heinous deeds. Having assembled the team of mutants in the past, Stryker uses them to complete his own personal operations, at one point ordering them to massacre a militia within an African village, and then tries to torture information from innocent civilians there about the adamantium that located within the area. When Logan rebelled against him, Stryker knocked him out and then tried to obliterate the village with a nuke. In the present, manipulating Logan to become his subject in the Weapon X program, Stryker experiments on countless humans, transforming them into his mindless brutes who suffer so much that they thank Logan for killing them.
