The diner's surprised/disgusted reaction upon being informed what they're eating is now a requirement of the trope. Delete or move examples that don't fit. Delete zero-context examples.

    Original OP

There are two related issues with I Ate WHAT?!. The trope description says it's someone eats something that is "not intended to be food"/a substance that's "[not] supposed to be eaten by anyone", and "most of the time" they're not aware of what they're eating.

  • Unclear whose point of view is important here. Does it have to be not food to the diner? Does everyone have to find it gross? Does the audience's opinion matter at all?
  • The misuse includes examples of diners' horrified reactions to things that are food, like turkey and eggs. The trope does not require the diner's reaction, so the trope name is not indicative of what the trope is about.

Personally, I doubt the tropeworthiness of "someone eats something that isn't food" by itself. I believe the real trope is the reaction, not the "food"ness.

Troping tangent...

What spurred my posting this thread is the page history of Eternals where someone drinks something that was presented as palatable (and he finds it delicious), but he spits it out after learning how it was made.
  • I added * I Ate WHAT?!: Kingo compliments Gilgamesh's beer, and Gilgamesh says he chewed up the grains himself, causing Kingo to spit it out. Kingo later takes an absentminded sip before remembering what it's made from and spitting it out again.
  • I reread the trope description and considered this misuse; moved entry to * Cordon Bleugh Chef: Kingo compliments Gilgamesh's beer, and Gilgamesh says he chewed up the grains himself, causing Kingo to spit it out. Kingo later takes an absentminded sip before remembering what it's made from and spitting it out again.
  • Someone potholed "causing Kingo to spit it out" to I Ate WHAT?!.
  • Someone added * I Ate WHAT?!: The Eternals were pleasantly surprised at how good Gilgamesh's home-brewed spirits was. Until he told them its secret...the booze was made with Gil's fermented spit.
  • Someone moved the Cordon Bleugh Chef entry to the character sheet. I Ate WHAT?! entry remains.

"A character eats something that is not intended to be food, typically results in a response once the discovery is made". This definition actually has a lot to unpack which isn't made clear by the article.

I generally agree with your first proposal, but would like to cover some corners for clarity, besides "Senseless Phagia, followed by Surprise Tropes".

I don't see why this has to be restricted to non-food. If a character unknowingly eats food they originally thought sounded disgusting or thought they would hate and reacts negatively after finding out what it was, that's still a trope.

[tup] an expansion of the trope. I don't know why it was so strict to begin with.

It'll be time to make a crowner tonight. Do we have any options other than expanding to include things that are actually edible?

Edit: We already have at least ten votes in favor of expanding, but I'm not sure if that's enough.

A crowner won't hurt, in case someone else decides to pitch another option.

If there's a crowner to expand, which I also support for the record, for transparency it should state what is the new suggested definition.

[up]I'd link to your post and Tabs's post as a reference for what the definition would be. I had no intention of simply putting "Expand the definition" without being more specific because that kind of crowner entry causes problems (such as the Getting Crap Past the Radar crowner that mentioned setting standards without saying what the standards would be).

To summarize what it boils down to: "A character reacts with shock that the food they've just eaten was not what they (could) have expected"? Or the specifics will be discussed later?

[up] Yes. The two requirements will be the eating part followed by the surprised reaction. Still thinking about which tropes the current definition can be moved to if redefining gathers consensus.

Calling in favor of expanding the definition to cover characters eating things other than inedible substances, as detailed in this post and this post. Get a sandbox ready for the revised description if necessary.

I saw that someone made Sandbox.I Ate What to work on the revised definition, and I don't see anything wrong with it. Does anything else need to be done, or is is it safe to swap it in? Also, is expanding the definition the only thing we're doing here? If we're just expanding the definition to fit misuse, we may be able to close the thread after the description is updated.
