- There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. was one of the people in charge of seeking out an recruiting these people. However, he knew they would never get along unless they had a sacrifice to motivate them. To this end, he faced Loki alone, giving his life to bring the Avengers together. Following this, S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury used the T.A.H.I.T.I. project, a project designed to use Kree biology to resurrect a fallen Avenger, which Coulson was in charge of and had shut down, to bring Coulson back to life. All of Coulson's memories of the project and the Kree were wiped in order to prevent side effects. When Coulson learned of the circumstances of his revival, he was horrified and called Fury out on it. Years later, Coulson would give his life again to save the Earth, only to be brought back a year later as an LMD, upgraded with Chronicom technology, once more against his will.
- Several months after his team's final mission, he received a message from his protégé Daisy Johnson. Her space exploration team had found a world that turned out to be the Pantheon. Some other members of the team hurried over to assist, and after they had told their stories to the Court of the Gods, it was decided to consider them for godhood. Coulson was naturally the first one considered, and it was decided that he hold the title of God of Being Revived Against One's Will due to the fact that it had happened to him twice.

- Following Team Coulson's final mission, Daisy Johnson discovered the Pantheon while exploring deep space. This led to several members of the team being considered for godhood. Coulson requested that his longtime partner Melinda May be considered second, after himself. After carefully examining May's backstory and personality, as well as what tropes still needed gods, it was decided that she hold the position of Goddess of Only Taking Guns if Necessary.
- Despite primarily being a combatant in the field, May has a troubled history with combat. In the mid-to-late 2000s, she, Coulson, and several other agents were sent to Bahrain to peacefully intercept and register a powered individual known as Eva Belyakov. Instead, Eva and her hired mercenaries took every S.H.I.E.L.D. agent present, sans Coulson and May, hostage in a warehouse. May went in alone and killed several of Eva's mercenaries and Eva herself, saving the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. However, Eva's daughter Katya died in the crossfire. In reality, Katya was behind the whole thing. She had taken over the minds of the mercenaries and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, as well as her mother, in order to feel their pain. After May killed Eva, Katya revealed her true colors and threatened to kill the brainwashed agents, forcing May to kill her. The event left May traumatized and led to her retirement from field work until she was recruited for Team Coulson.
- May has stated that she doesn't actually have anything against guns. She merely doesn't feel that she needs them. She is usually right. In the rare event that she does need a gun, she will not hesitate to take one - usually from the enemy.
