Witches

    Angela

Angela

Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angela.JPG

A youthful-looking witch who always resembles a young teenage girl. Angela is the Eternal Witch and one of the most powerful and scary witches in the entire setting. She is also the one responsible for cursing Guideau and enjoys tormenting her for it.

  • Ambiguously Evil: The worse part of Angela is that her reputation is only implied from rumors and hearsay. So whatever messed up thing she did to garner such levels of fear is up to the reader's imagination.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Guideau naturally.
  • Body Surf: Pretty messed up example. One way in which Angela can surf through a new body is by obviously having a 'volunteer' to sacrifice herself. Each body Angela inhabits has a time limit as the bodies she is inhabiting are already dead. During the Orlencia arc, it was revealed that Angela made a deal with Dornez (the Queen of the Gnir and by extension, the vampires), in which Dornez would gift Angela several children to slaughter in exchange for Angela giving Dornez her status.
  • Creepy Child: Angela likes to take control of young girls. Her creepy and possessive personality does not help.
  • Cute Witch: Heavily, heavily subverted. Yes, the bodies that Angela possesses are indeed pretty, but the fact that she is a possessor makes her very creepy.
  • Dark Messiah: Is this to the Global Holy Church. Which is possibly why they are so hell bent in going on a global witch hunt.
  • Demonic Possession: Angela's specialty in magic is taking over the bodies of young girls. So the image you see here isn't even her real body.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Sort off. According to Angela, the body that Guideau's soul is currently possessing is actually Angela's 'real body'. This isn't surprising since Angela's abilities involve taking over people's bodies. But given how vague Angela is and given her potential reputation. It is left intentionally mysterious.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Although Ashaf and Guideau may fight other witches, the Paladin Corps and murderers. The true target that Guideau and Ashaf are looking for is Angela, the witch who cursed Guideau. Angela herself made an appearance and she is as mysterious as she is scarily powerful.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Even for witches, something about Angela doesn't seem right.
  • Mysterious Past: Like Guideau, we don't know much about Angela nor what sort of deal she had with Guideau.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Even by witch standards, Angela is god damned scary and overpowered.
  • Power Trio: Is this with Lucia and the unnamed glasses witch in a small group called the Coven of Witches.
  • The Prophecy: According to Thurlander, the Executioner's main mission right now is to honour the words of the Seer - one of the Three Saints - who only awake for a short time every few decades. The Seer prophesised on the 'Great Flow'. An important event that forewarn about the Witches who are trying to seize the forbidden instruments for their own malicious ends. The Seer calls them the Great Enemy, and chief of them is the Eternal Witch Angela.
  • Red Baron: Angela's nickname is the Eternal Witch. For the big bad, Ashaf calling her one of the most powerful and scariest witches in the world is not an understatement.
  • Runic Magic: She is a witch, which is not surprising.
  • Slasher Smile: Angela's smile by itself is normal. It is the context behind her always cheery looks that makes it creepy.

    Falvell Farmington

Falvell Farmington

Voiced by: Mizuki Mano (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/falvell.JPG

A young teenage girl who turned out to be the descendent of Luna Farmington, the Mystic Witch. Falvell lives in a close-knit village with her little brother when a series of grisly murders placed her in an unfortunate position as scapegoat.

  • And I Must Scream: A more literal example. Due to her curse, she is unable to scream or talk when the Executioners basically stabbed her little brother and burned her house down.
  • Big Sister Instinct: The Executioners learned this the hard way when they nearly killed Falvell's little brother, Owent. After Falvell's curse was broken by Guideau, to say she is overpowered is an understatement. She was reality warping just by speaking.
  • Burn the Witch!: What the Executioners were planning to do. If they didn't kill Falvell, the villagers most likely will.
  • The Bus Came Back: We didn't know what has happened to the siblings. However, they returned in Chapter 51, with the two living in a safe house until unknown marauders threatened to harm them.
  • Cool Big Sis: To her brother Owent despite being mute.
  • Cute Mute: Falvell is a young teenager who is mute due to being a descendent of Luna Farmington, known as the Mystic Witch, a master of vocative magic - i.e voice magic. Falvell would later regain her powers after kissing Guideau to break the seal on her tongue.
  • Cute Witch: THE cutest witch in the setting. No surprise given her Cute Mute status and her innocence of being merely a young teenage girl.
  • Eye Colour Change: In the anime, her eye is a natural light rose-pink, but once she unleashes her powers, it turns into a bright, golden-bronze.
  • Little Big Sister: By the time we have seen the siblings again, it is assumed a year or two has passed. By this point, Owent is a good few inches taller than his sister.
  • Magical Incantation: A laughably overpowered example as her being a witch of vocative magic enables her to literally reality warp things in or out of existence.
  • Nice Girl: One of the sweetest witches you will encounter.
  • Onee-sama: Downplayed, but Owent still respectively calls her 姉ちゃん (Nee-chan).
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Given what her power entails, thank god she is a nice girl overall.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: For a girl who looks like she around 14 years of age. The power she is gifted is truly ridiculous.
  • Promoted to Parent: We have no idea where her parents are, the only thing we know is that she takes care of her brother.
  • Proper Lady: Falvell is a polite, modest girl who does not like to cause trouble.
  • Reality Warper: Given she is able to do a lot of things with just her voice. We were given a small taste on what she was able to do to the Executioners once her seal was broken.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: In the anime, her hair and eyes are of a light rose-pink colour, which very much suits her sweet and harmless personality.
  • Runic Magic: When she activates her magic, tattoos and runes would emerge around her mouth.
  • Tea Is Classy: She might not be rich or well-off, but Falvell is a classy lass whose tea is notable to be quite delicious.
  • Technicolor Eyes: In the adaptation, it is of a light rose-pink colour. Compared to other witches, hers is more down-to-earth and the least exotic, which matches her personality.
  • The Scapegoat: What the Executioners were planning to do; the Executioners were actually the ones responsible in the streaks of grisly murders. They just did it to rile the villagers up and make Falvell extremely vulnerable and isolated.

    Helga Velvette

Helga Velvette

Voiced by: Miyu Tomita (JP), Brittney Karbowski (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/helga.JPG

A young witch descending from the lineage of Quena Velvette the Dauntless Witch. Helga is the last of her bloodline after the family massacre by the Executioners. Now on the run and in charge of guarding Ashgan the Demon Sword, Helga dreams of escaping persecution and getting a boyfriend.

  • Action Girl: Very much so. As the witch of blades, Helga is the most 'hands-on' witch in the manga.
  • Amazon Brigade: The Velvette's are an entire clan of female witches who are skilled in utilizing giant magical flying zweihanders.
  • Badass Adorable: Helga, the descendent of Quena Velvette the Dauntless Witch, might be a nice but awkward girl, but she is still a witch capable of summoning an infinite number of swords to turn people into meat chunks or summoning giant skyscraper-sized swords from the air; never mind carrying a sword of mass destruction and absolute evil around like a toy.
  • Barrier Maiden: Helga is in charge of guarding and carrying around Ashgan, a sealed demonic sword of mass destruction. The reason her clan is known as the "weakest" of witches is that most of their magic goes to maintaining that seal.
  • BFS: Even the sword she carries and summons are like zweihanders, let alone the mother of all swords she could summon which rivals mountains in scale.
  • Burn the Witch!: Helga's entire family suffered that and more. To say it was gruesome is an understatement given that the Executioners literally crucified/nailed her sister on a cross before shoving her own sword through the mouth whilst the rest of her family was impaled either anally or vaginally through the stake. Helga herself nearly suffered the same fate.
  • Butt-Monkey: Helga is always getting the short end of the stick.
  • Crazy Cat Lady: Humorously subverted. Helga wants to have a boyfriend so she can avoid being seen as a lonely crazy witch to be hunted down.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: She might be the butt of jokes, but she is still a witch and is still capable of absolutely fucking things up on a geological scale if her skyscraper-sized swords are an indication.
  • Cute Witch: Helga, one of the weakest witches in the series, has a very friendly and awkward personality unlike most witches and is constantly on the run. Good thing she has an overpowered Demon Sword by the name of Ashgan to protect her.
  • Eye Colour Change: In the anime, her eye is a natural lilac-purple, but once she unleashes her powers, it turns into a bright, golden-bronze.
  • Family Extermination: The Velvettes were once a large clan of witches which purposely guarded Ashgan the Demon Sword. Until the Executioners arrived and brutally killed nearly all of them save for Helga.
  • Fiery Redhead: Sort of. The anime adaptation gave her maroon-coloured hair, but the trope still stands given her energetic personality.
  • Last Of Her Kind: After the Executioners massacred her family, Helga is the last of her bloodline.
  • Hot Witch: Like all witches, Helga is very pretty looking.
  • Matriarchy: From what little we see of the Velvettes, they all appear to be women. It is likely that the clan is heavily matriarchal, matrilineal and communal given that Helga referenced she grew up under multiple 'mothers'.
  • Artsy Beret: Technically she wears a flat cap, but also a beret on occasion.
  • Nice Girl: Helga is one of the nicest witches out there.
  • Odd Friendship: Who would have thought that a young, plucky, socially awkward witch who is obsessed in getting a boyfriend is best buds with an apocalyptic sword of mass destruction?
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Don't let her title of being the weakest witch fool you, Helga is just as capable of summoning swords so big it can theoretically carve up mountain ranges.
    • One-Man Army: In that sense, she is also capable of holding her own against an entire Paladin Corps brigade.
  • Runic Magic: Like all witches, Helga glows up in runes and tattoos when she is about to use her magic.
  • Sacred First Kiss: A funny example. Helga dreams of having a boyfriend. So you can imagine her reaction when Guideau needs to kiss her in order to awaken.
  • Signature Headgear: Her flat cap is her most identifiable feature. She never goes out without wearing some sort of flat cap or beret. Symbolically speaking, it makes sense since flat caps have often been associated with the upper class and casualness, which suits Helga's casual personality and noble background.
  • Storm of Blades: What Helga is capable of and is unique from her lineage. Her flying swords can act like giant 2-meter flechettes if needed. She one-ups herself by summoning swords the size of skyscrapers down from the sky.
  • Sword and Sorcery: As THE sword witch, she basically counts. Literally.
  • Technicolor Eyes: A witch, in the anime, her natural eye colour is exotic, being lilac-purple, but would quickly turn to golden-bronze.
  • The Fashionista: Next to Guideau, Helga has the most outfit changes in the series, and she drips out in anything she wears.

    Oscar Orlencia

Oscar

A youthful-looking witch that is partnered with Dunward in Orlencia. For his entry see here.

    Lady Ione

Lady Ione

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ione.JPG

The first witch encountered by Ashaf and Guideau. Lady Ione, the Heroic Witch, may first appear like a Proper Lady and the hero of the city of Sanguine Lotus. But appearances can be deceiving.

  • Action Girl: As a witch, she definitely like to take in part of the action.
  • Beam Spam: One of Ione's powers involves firing black beams of energy.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Unbeknownst to the residents of Sanguine Lotus including her own apprentice, Marie. Ione actually wants to unseal the Hellfire that was kept dormant in the city. She treated her own apprentice and several innocent girls as sacrificial 'keys' in order to unlock the curse and burn everyone living in the city for revenge on what they did to her grandmother.
  • Burn the Witch!: What happened to her grandmother and what she planned to do with Sanguine Lotus.
  • Eye Colour Change: In the anime, her eye is a natural dark blue, but once she unleashes her powers, it turns into a bright, golden-bronze.
  • Hellfire: The name of the curse placed on the city, literally.
  • Hot Witch: Ione is not just pretty to look at, but she is one of the closest characters in the manga to fit the 'hot' part of the trope. Too bad her true personality is anything but.
  • Human Sacrifice: What Marie and the girls were about to be if it wasn't for the intervention by Guideau and Ashaf.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Heavily subverted. Her natural eye colour in the anime is a deep blue and her personality initially shares her colour symbolism. But she is anything but "innocent".
  • Meganekko: She wears a pair of big ol'glasses.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: As a witch this is not surprising as she was close in burning an entire city to the ground.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Honestly, given how popular she is, Ione could have just left what happened in the past stay in the past.
  • Runic Magic: Par for the cause of being a witch.
  • Starter Villain: She is basically this for the entire series. And we don't even know what happen to her afterwards.
  • Technicolor Eyes: A witch, in the anime, her natural eye colour is a dark blue, but would quickly turn to golden-bronze.
  • Uncertain Doom: Well, she caught the full punch of Guideau's other body in the stomach. However, we are left guessing whether she died from her injuries or somehow survived.
  • Unwitting Pawn: What Marie was to her unfortunately.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: What she attempted to do with her own apprentice Marie.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Both played straight and subverted. Ione is indeed popular and considered a hero of Sanguine Lotus. But she also wants to destroy the city given that the resident's ancestors were responsible in burning her grandmother on a stake.

    Lucia

Lucia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucia_decendent_of_viola_dendrow_the_giant_witch.JPG

Lucia is a witch and a descendant of Viola Dendrow, the Giant Witch. Her specialty involves the creation of thunderstorms and giant hurricanes. She, alongside Angela and another unnamed witch formed a trio to breach the headquarters of the Paladin Corps and steal its forbidden artifacts.

  • Action Girl: One of the more action-heavy one of the trio.
  • An Arm and a Leg: She lost an arm and her left leg after Helga summoned the mother-of-all BFS on their location. Angela later healed it right back anyways.
  • Magic Hair: Her hair twist and turns like that of a hurricane.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: No surprise for someone who can summon an infinite supply of category 5+ hurricanes and thunderstorms.
  • Power Trio: She is this with Angela and the unnamed glasses witch.
  • Runic Magic: As a witch, this is not surprising with a long stitch-like tattoo forming on the right side of her face.
  • Tornado Move: Her specialty essentially.

    Ludovseth Witch

Ludovseth Witch

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ludovseth_witch.JPG

An unknown and unnamed witch from the medieval period who arrived in Ludovseth and only appeared in the extra chapter. She is an eccentric, whimsical but nice witch who is curious on the livelihood of a certain unfortunate sentry guard. She specializes in flowers, although she can summon more destructive forces if needed.

  • Action Girl: If the last pages of her powers is any indication, she can and will, obliterate entire armies.
  • Allergic to Routine: Gets bored easily and finds the sentry guard's job as boring. One of the reasons why she came to Ludovseth is because she was also bored around her area.
  • Cute Witch: Basically ticks all the boxes.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Has flowers in her hair, has flowers as her primary form of magic and is very feminine to boot.
  • Flower Motifs: Although we do not know the meaning of her flowers, we do know that it represents her character a lot.
  • Green Thumb: Her special schlick of magic is this as she likes to cover certain areas in plant material or flowers. That is of course, when pushed to fight, then she switches from green thumb to something a bit more...apocalyptic.
  • Impossibly Awesome Magic Trick: What the sentry guard taught she was doing when she gave him an entire feast out of thin air.
  • Magic Carpet: How she transports herself with, a nice and cushy flying carpet.
  • Magic Meteor: What she is capable of and possibly infamous for in the manga.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Is this to the sentry guard. Very polite, very enthusiastic and very eccentric.
  • Nice Girl: A pretty nice, polite and accommodating witch if we've seen one.
  • One-Man Army: A more literal example as she solos an entire demon army that even Guts from Berserk would have trouble dealing with a single finger gesture.
  • Perpetual Smiler: You rarely ever see her without having an enormous grin.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Possibly one of the most hilarious and blatant example of just how overpowered witches are in the setting. With one finger gesture, this petite flower girl summoned a rain of meteors to completely vapourised a 20,000 demon army with kaiju-sized monsters in an apocalyptic, nuclear-sized explosion.
  • Plucky Girl: Very enthusiastic, very curious and very much into action when needed.
  • Runic Magic: When she activates her magic, tattoos of a flower (how appropriate) forms on her right cheek.
  • The Tease: Likes to tease the poor sentry guard given that she knows he doesn't have that much interaction with girls before.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: Funnily enough, for a world filled with witches, she is the only one actually wearing a proper witch hat. Justified given the time period she lived in.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Given that she lived in the middle-ages, we do not know her fate. But given her one man army status, she would most likely either be alive or survived through her offspring.

    Unnamed Glasses Witch

Unnamed Glasses Witch

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/glasses_witch.JPG

The yet unnamed glasses witch is a witch who appeared alongside Angela and Lucia to form a trio to breach the headquarters of the Paladin Corps and steal its forbidden artifacts. Her powers so far, seem to involve spatial manipulation.

  • Action Girl: To a lesser extant than Lucia, although she could hold her own.
  • Barrier Warrior: She can manipulate and fold space-time to act as a barrier for defense.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Has these.
  • Cleavage Window: Her shirt and jacket leaves her chest wide open. Although it is a more subdued example as her cup-size isn't big enough to be noticable.
  • Hot Witch: Possibly the closest example of the trope and even then, it is depicted in a more subdued manner.
  • Meganekko: She wears one.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Heavily subdued example as although her chest is wide open, the rest of her clothing is still incredibly modest and her chest isn't even big enough to make it noticable nor 'fanservicey'.
  • Power Trio: She is this with Lucia and Angela.
  • Space Master: What her magic specializes in as she immediately teleported the arm of one of Phanora's Death Knights to god-knows where.

    Phanora Kristoffel

Phanora Kristoffel

A very powerful witch who is the chief of undead and a master necromancer. For her entry see here.

Witches' Disciples

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_witchs_diciples.PNG
Witches' Disciples are people who have caught the attention of a witch and won their affection, effectively becoming their pupil. Whilst not on the same levels as a pure-blooded witch, they are considered the second most dangerous people in the world and are no slouches in combat themselves. They are known to bring their own entourage of servants too, each of them a powerful mage in their own right.
    Stayler Allman

Stayler Allman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stayler_allman.PNG
Click here to see Stayler's younger appearance
A mysterious mage who caught the affection of not one but two witches as a disciple. She is accompanied by a mage as a companion, but the two barely have a working relationship. She is unhinged and wants the Mysterious Boy for unknown reasons, even if it means hurting him in the process.

  • '20s Bob Haircut: Her younger years spots this hairstyle.
  • Axe-Crazy: Subtle one, but it is there. Something is definitely not right with this woman.
  • Collateral Damage: Pays absolutely no heed on whether her powerful and destructive compression magic will have an affect on the local populace of Vagner.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Sports some ridiculous eyebags to highlight her...offness.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Is incredibly pale, creepy and has dark hair. During her earlier years, her hair was much lighter.
  • Emotionless Girl: Downplayed. She is cold and emotionless at first. But repeated interference from unwelcome third parties will annoy the shit out of her.
  • The Flapper: During her earlier years, she dressed like one. Although now she opts a more 'wild' and modern look.
  • Gravity Master: Her main form of magic is compression magic, which are effectively weaponised black holes, and she shows the affects on people with all its gruesome results.
  • Gravity Sucks: Sort of. Her compression magic works like a black hole but its does have its limits and eventually, it would explode like a bomb due to all the compressed matter being expelled at tremendous force.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: The results of anyone unfortunate enough to literally eat face first from her compression magic. Lets say it ain't pretty.
  • Not So Stoic: As mentioned above, having her mission interfered by outside parties will annoy her to no end.
  • Oh, Crap!: Had this reaction when she realised that the Mysterious Boy can No-Sell and redirect her compression magic back at her.
  • Rugged Scar: Has a Joker-esque scar on her right cheek.
  • Student–Master Team: As a Witch's Disciple, this was her relationship with the two witches she worked under previously.
  • Surpassed the Teacher: Downplayed. She didn't surpassed her two masters, but she sure as hell survived either of them.
  • Would Hurt a Child: More like, she doesn't care if she hurts a child. But her recklessness did injure the Boy to dangerous results.
