General

The Global Holy Church is a vast, influential theological institution which is in charge of the regulation of magic. If anything, they are the primary manufacturer of industrialized sorcery and are hell bent in keeping their power to themselves. Located on the first continent, the Global Holy Church calls on both the Paladin Corps and the Executioners to do their bidding.

  • Church Militant: Pretty much that. It is essentially the Vatican during the Renaissance with all of its political, military and religious power at its height.
  • Corrupt Church: If the Executioners are anything to go by, the Global Holy Church isn't above playing a dirty hand.
  • Magitek: In contrast to the Art Deco-esque technology of the human world, the Global Holy Church sports a blend between retro-futurism and gothic architecture. They literally have floating medieval castles acting as flying command centers.
  • The Fundamentalist: The Global Holy Church promotes such dogmatic and inquisitorial ideologies.
  • Power Trio: A more religious example. But the Church worships the Three Saints. They are three holy women which is titalised as the Healer, the Defender and the Seer.
  • The Theocracy: It is THE theocracy of the setting.
  • The Witch Hunter: The Global Holy Church as well as its underlings all behave as these and it is basically their modus operandi.

The Paladin Corps

The Paladin Corps is the primary military arm of the Global Holy Church. They act as the public 'face' of the Church and are incredibly loyal and zealous in the way they do things. They are essentially the military police whose job is to secure magical artifacts, hunt down witches when appropriate and regulate sorcery.

  • A Lighter Shade of Black: The Paladin Corps may be puritanical and extreme in their ways, but even they have some rules and regulations in contrast to the Executioners, who are basically what happens if the Spanish Inquisition, the KGB, the CIA, the Gestapo and the Illuminati had a baby. Yes, the Executioners are not above using children as soldiers and slaughtering entire families to get the job done, let alone brutally torturing young witch girls to death either through crucifixions, nailed to a barnyard like a porcupine or anally/vaginally impaled with a stake, simply for existing. To say they are massive pieces of shit is an understatement.
  • Church Militant: They are the militant part of Church Militant.
  • Cool Mask: All the Paladins wear a white Zoro-esque face mask.
  • Interservice Rivalry: Suffice to say, after the Castle coup, the Paladin Corps have a very sour view on the Executioners and vice versa.
  • Knight Templar: The Paladin Corps is essentially this; dressed all white and willing to level entire villages and towns just to make sure their target is either dead or captured.
    • Matt Cugat, the colonel and head of one of the unit branch of the Paladin Corps is this to a tee.
  • Light Is Not Good: They are all dressed in white and look noble in appearance. However, they are not nice and are willing to bifurcate entire towns to get the job done.
  • Magitek: Onboard the Castle or any base of operations, the Paladins have a computer table that allows members to take control and essentially summon magical drones in the shape of ghostly knights.
  • Ominous Floating Castle: The Paladin Corps base of operations is a flying, mobile castle defended by magical barriers and magical weapons called simply the Castle. It could also fall under the Cool Airship trope.
  • Police Brutality: They are the military police of a theocracy, do you expect them to behave gently?
  • The Spanish Inquisition: They behave like them, except with an entire armada of floating castle battleships.

A colonel of one of the units of the Paladin Corps. He is loyal to his cause and does not take treachery lightly. Specializes in ice magic and a very proficient user at it.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Lost his right arm after the Demon Sword incident.
  • An Ice Person: Matt Cugat is an ice mage who can summon a giant cloud of frost or a ridiculously enormous icicle bigger than most skyscrapers.
  • Crisis of Faith: The coup done by the Executioners during the Castle siege shook Matt's faith in the Church.
  • Good Is Not Soft: The closest the series gets to a just character other than Ashaf. And he can be brutal.
  • Fate Worse than Death: The fate of what he did with Lowell and the Global Holy Church's envoy.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: What the church's propaganda depicts both him and the rest of the Paladins.
  • Knight Templar: The Paladin Corps is already an army filled with these guys, but Matt Cugatt takes this to a ridiculous level; not listening to Ashaf's warnings until he was unable to contact the HQ.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He is both bishie 'and has long hair.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Matt can do many things with his ice magic, including summoning ice spears so large it rivals building blocks in size.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: He has near zero trust when working with Craig due to the actions of the Executioners earlier on.
    • Enemy Mine: Nevertheless, he is willing to put aside differences in order to combat an even bigger threat, Angela.

    Lowell

Lowell

Lowell was the right-hand woman of Matt Cugatt in the Paladin Corps. That is, until she revealed herself to be a double agent for the Executioners.

  • Backstab Backfire: She backstabbed her boss literally only for her to be eventually apprehended and suffer a fate worse then death.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Definitely appears to be a loyal woman to Matt. If only he knew...
  • Brainy Brunette: A dark example as Lowell is indeed smart and crafty enough to fool Matt into thinking that she was loyal to him.
  • Double Agent: Lowell, Matt Cugat's second-in-command, revealed herself to be a double agent working for the Executioners and stabbed him literally in the back once Matt found out about the Executioner's coup on the Paladin Corp's base of operations. She got her comeuppance later.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Her fate once she was apprehended and is about to face the wrath of her boss.
    • Uncertain Doom: Whatever she is about to face from Matt, it ain't looking pretty.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Suffice to say, Lowell got what was coming for her once she stabbed her boss right in the back, only for her plans to fail and be sentenced to a fate worse than death by said boss.

    Archmage

Archmage

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/archmage.JPG

One of the Archmages of the Paladin Corps who appeared at the height of the siege conducted by Angela and her team of witches.

  • The Archmage: Well...it is in the title.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: His eyes is pure black save for a glint-like star of where the iris should be.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: A subdued example as he is more handsome than he is pretty.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Very much so as his powers can give even the witches a run for their money.
    • Disc-One Nuke: Case in point, at the height of the siege, he summoned the arm of a dragon, which is so god damned big it reshaped the entire topography. Even Angela and co high-tailed it before they got smacked by the damn thing.
  • One-Man Army: Single-handidly dealt with Angela's summoned monsters which were the size of skyscrapers.

The Executioners

The Executioners are the polar opposites of the Paladin Corps. The Yin to the Paladin's Yang. They are a secret organisation of assasins, hitman and murderers; the hidden knife of the Global Holy Church so to speak. Their existence is kept so well hidden that not even the Paladin Corps knew about them until they revealed themselves much later on. If you thought the Paladin Corps were brutal, wait till you see the Executioners.

  • Church Militant: The assasin branch of the church.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Because of their nature, the Executioners as both an instiution and on a personnel basis have a bad habit on stabbing unwitting pawns in the back if it means furthering their goals. This has made them both feared and hated even by their own sister-compatriot organizations. If Angela wasn't the Big Bad, then the Executioners would gladly fill in the spot.
  • Evil vs. Evil: Is this when fighting against Angela during the Paladin Corps siege. But given how Angela's reputation is only ''implied'', the Executioners just ends up being presented as the bigger assholes of the fight.
  • He Knows Too Much: The fate of anyone who saw the Executioner's conduct.
  • Interservice Rivalry: The Executioners don't view the Paladin Corps too highly, disregarding them as mere pawns. The Paladins likewise, view them with equal disdain.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: An extremely revolting and depraved example, but if the Executioners aren't stabbing you in the back, then their next preferred form of execution is impalement. This can range from 'traditional' impalement Vlad Tepes-style to the Cannibal Holocaust-style impalement which is seen in detail on the Velvette massacre. Yeah...and witches are meant to be the bad guys here?
  • Knight Templar: The only thing they can relate with the Paladin Corps are their fanaticism and zealotry.
  • Manipulative Bastard: ALL of them are this. There is yet to be a single Executioner character who is anything but a manipulative, lying, deceptive, treacherous, puritanical, sadistic and abusive bastard.
  • The Men in Black: They definitely have that getup, given that their standard uniform consist of a black suit and, if needed, a black robe with white masks.
  • Murder, Inc.: What their profession is in a nutshell.
  • The Prophecy: The Executioner's main mission right now is to honour the words of the Seer - one of the Three Saints - who only awake for a short time every few decades. The Seer prophesised on the 'Great Flow'. An important event that forewarn about the Witches who are trying to seize the forbidden instruments for their own malicious ends. The Seer calls them the Great Enemy, and chief of them is the Eternal Witch Angela. This doesn't excuse their monstrous behaviour, but their goals isn't just evil for the sake of evil.
  • Professional Killer: An entire organisation of these lot.
  • Secret Police: The Executioners are the Global Holy Church's concealed dagger. Part Spanish Inquisition, part Man in Black and part KGB. These are NOT nice people.
  • State Sec: Plays hand in hand with their Secret Police status, the Executioners only answer to the Global Holy Church and is willing to crush any and all dissent or rivals, even amongst sister-branches like the Paladin Corps.
  • White Mask of Doom: In contrast to the noble-white masks of the Paladins, the Executioners wear a sinister-looking mask like these.

    Craig/Karl Oakleave

Craig

Click here to see Craig's familiar

Craig (Real name: Karl Oakleave) is an Executioner who disguised himself as a 'friend' to Owent and Falvell so that the Executioners would have an easier time to kill them. He later came back and is now forced to team up with Matt.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Lost both his arms after Falvell basically deleted it. He got prosthethics later on.
  • Backstab Backfire: His fate once Falvell activated her witch powers. He is fortunate he even survived,
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Craig disguised himself as a friend to Owent and Falvell, protecting them from 'persecution'. Little did the two know that Craig is very much the one setting the town to lynch them.
  • Double Agent: As an Executioner, this is no surprise.
  • Familiar: Craig can summon a really scary puppet as a familiar.
  • Karma Houdini: Sort off. For being a treacherous, lying piece of shit who is willing to ochestrate an event that will kill an innocent teenage girl, he managed to survive Falvell's awakening. Granted he got one hell of a beating and lost both his arms in the process.
  • Messy Hair: His hair is quite unkempt.
  • Mr. Smith: His real name is actually Karl Oakleave. However, in public he uses the plain-sounding name of Craig.
  • Older Than They Look: Craig may look like a young teenage boy, but he is much, much older than he appears.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He is this to Cugatt given his walking dickhead-status.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: He knows that Matt Cugatt has every reason to have near zero trust when working with him due to the actions of the Executioners earlier on.
    • Enemy Mine: Nevertheless, he is willing to put aside differences in order to combat an even bigger threat, Angela.

    Global Holy Church's Envoy

Global Holy Church's Envoy

Voiced by: Kazuhiro Yamaji (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/executioner_agent.JPG

An envoy from the Global Holy Church who later revealed himself to be an Executioner. So he is still correct from a certain point of view. After attempting to coup the Paladin Corps' Castle, he got his commeuppance.

  • Asshole Victim: Yeah, he might be a cripple thanks to Guideau, but no one will shed a tear for that prick.
  • Backstab Backfire: He taught that literally backstabbing both the Paladin Corps and Helga was a good idea. Well, he found out the hard way...
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Looks like an genuine envoy to the Global Holy Church in order to assist the Paladin Corps. Turns out looks can be deceiving.
  • An Arm and a Leg: What happened to the Global Holy Church's envoy whose limbs were plucked one by one by Guideau after throwing bricks so fast it acts like an autocannon.
  • Dirty Coward: What the Global Holy Church's envoy turned out to be. After his plans in acquiring the Demon Sword failed, he fled under the disguise of an old man. Unfortunately for him, Guideau dealt with this problem by dismembering him alive and gifting him to Matt Cugat for appropriate punishment.
  • Family Extermination: Revealed himself to be the mastermind and the man in charge during the Velvette massacre. Given that he is responsible for all the extreme visual and implied sexual violence done on Helga's family clan, fans were quite ecstatic when Guideau crippled him and sent him to be perforated by a very pissed off Matt Cugat.
  • Fate Worse than Death: His fate once he was apprehended and is about to face the wrath of Matt Cugat.
    • Uncertain Doom: Whatever he is about to face from Matt, it ain't looking pretty.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Wears glasses and is an unrepentent treacherous worm.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": No one calls him by his real name, they just refer to him as simply the envoy.
  • The Right Hand of Doom: What the envoy of the Holy Global Church carries. It is called Ishlingen the Demon Hand and it is a cursed artefact that can Mind Rape folks, witches and even demonic swords under its control.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Whenever his eyes aint being shown, it is a hint of his ulterior motives.

    Thurlander

Thurlander

Thurlander is a mysterious figure and is the Director of the Executioners. He is a sinister looking individual with no body and resides within his own Garden.

  • Ambition Is Evil: Outright states that the reason why he recruited Cugat is so that he could find ways to exert power (Whatever that means). At least he is quite upfront about it.
  • Bad Boss: He is the head of the Executioners and given the despicable reputation of the entire organisation, it is safe to say that he has zero ethics whatsoever.
  • Floating Mask: He lost his entire body after a spell incident and he is now nothing more than an apparition of a white floating mask, a top hat and a business suit.
  • Invisible Jerkass: As the head of the Executioners and an invisible phantom. He definitely counts.
  • No Face Under the Mask: A literal example.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Downplayed. It is more of a set of agreement on alligned interests. But he recruited Cugat because he can last longer in the mission he set out for him and want to gain more power. That and to honour the prophecies of the Three Saints.
  • Pocket Dimension: What his Garden is meant to be and where his office is located.
  • Space Master: Speaking of his Garden. He is absolute master of his realm, which means that his power is absolute.
  • Walking Spoiler: There is a reason why his section is covered in spoilers.
  • White Mask of Doom: It is safe to say that the Executioner's infamous white masks is to pay homage to their leader, whose face is only visualised via HIS white mask.
