The Order of Magical Resonance

"Our Group Works by Magic, for Magic, and of Magic."
— The motto of the Order.

The Order of Magical Resonance is a public organization that is there to essentially investigate crimes and other strange knick-knacks that is supernatural in nature and therefore, beyond the scope of regular law enforcement agencies. Although they are neutral from the politics and conflict between the various factions, their investigations may put their employees in the crossfire.

    In General
  • Black Spot: Whenever something has to do with witches fall under the Order, employees receive a special black envelope to notify them.
  • Creature-Hunter Organization: They may fall under this depending on the case and the type of employees involved in it.
  • FBI Agent: The magical FBI to the Executioner's magical CIA.
  • Good Is Not Soft: The closest the series have to a 'good' faction and some members are not above using torture as a means for either punishment or getting answers.
  • Lawful Neutral: The most lawful of the factions. Although the Paladin Corps may claim they work under the rules of the Global Holy Church, they lack restraint and pragmatism. Whereas the Order is at least willing to talk before they shoot and try to work with local law enforcement.
  • Occult Detective: An entire organization comprising of mages and witches; essentially the magical FBI of the setting to the Executioner's more covert and insidious CIA/KGB hybrids.
  • Paranormal Investigation: Whenever zombies and spirits are involved, it is best to contact Phanora on this.
  • Who You Gonna Call?: Funnily enough, despite the dark and gloomy atmosphere, the Order has more in common with Ghostbusters and Mystery Inc than it is, a nebulous government agency. This is due to them being quite public in their services and willing to cooperate with society on a whole host of random stuff other than mere murder investigations.

    Ashaf
A tall, gaunt but well-dressed man. For his entry see here.

    Lucy O'Brien

Lucy O'Brien

A young looking woman who is a member of the Order. She is in charge of taking care of Owent and Falvell Farmington during their refuge stay.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Lost a leg and her left hand by one of the dark mages.
  • Back from the Dead: Falvell basically unkilled Lucy back to life after she regained her powers (again) via a kiss from Oscar.
  • Barrier Warrior: Whilst not to the same extent as Ashaf, she is still capable of crafting a barrier to an entire double-story house.
  • The Caretaker: Took the role as the sibling's caretaker during their refuge.
  • Eye Scream: How she was killed via the Demon Eye.
  • Killed Off for Real: Downplayed. She got killed by the Demon Eye by one of the malicious mages. But Falvell's OCP reality warping effects means that she is A-Ok.
  • Meganekko: Wears glasses.

    Oscar Orlencia

    Phanora Kristoffel

Phanora Kristoffel

Voiced by: Saori Hayami (Japanese), Katelyn Barr (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phanora_kristoffel.jpg

A young-looking, beautiful woman who is always accompanied by her assistant Johan. Phanora Kristoffel, the Profound Witch is not just a witch, but the chief necromancer and one of the most powerful if not THE most powerful necromancer in not just the Order of Magical Resonance but the world as well.

  • Berserk Button: Do not use necromancy in ways that violate its rules, or mess with Johan. A smug amateur learns this the hard way.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Phanora is one of the rare witches who is friendly, quiet and courteous. But she is also both a witch and the chief necromancer of the Order of Magical Resonance. Suffice to say, she is not a person you want to fuck with as one poor amateur found out.
  • Creepy Good: Phanora may be as cold as ice (both figuratively and literally) and is perpetually surrounded by the living dead, but she is one of the more moral characters in the manga.
  • Dull Surprise: With someone as unemotional as her, this isn't really that shocking. Case in point. What's her response when an Archmage was summoned? Nonchalantly let her underlings know to stay away from a safe distance with as much surprise as finding out that the sky is blue.
  • Emotionless Girl: Phanora isn't one you would consider emotional. But the moment something makes her even smirk a little, you better run.
  • Empty Eyes: As expected from the chief Necromancer.
  • Familiar: Undead are basically that to necromancers as Phanora explains, also functioning as Undead Laborers should the need arise.
  • Fantastic Legal Weirdness: In this world. Society treat the undead as one would a scientific or medical subject. It is pretty much explained that becoming a zombie is a matter of consent for practitioners like how in the real-world, some people would donate their body to the field of science once they die. As such, necromancy is far more bureaucratic than other depictions of it, with a shit ton of legality needed to bypass through either the person or next-of-kin's consent. Due to the spiritual nature of the Void, she considers those who are willing to donate their body with the utmost respect.
  • Ghostly Chill: Although not a ghost herself, Phanora being a necromancer, perpetually feels cold even in summer.
  • Hero of Another Story: She and Johan handle cases related to necromancy given that Ashaf is not skilled in that field.
  • Hot Witch: Subdued, Phanora is a witch, but like most witches in the series, her 'hotness' has more to do with her natural beauty than any fanservice in other mediums.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: A straightforward example. In the anime, her eyes are light blue in coloration.
  • Ice Queen: Phanora is as cool and calm as one can get from the most powerful necromancer alive.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: What her relationship with Johan boils down to.
  • More Deadly Than the Male: It doesn't take long to know who has more power in a room between her, Johan and the amateur necromancer.
  • Necromancer: She's both a witch and the chief necromancer of the Order of Magical Resonance.
  • Nice Girl: As far as witches and necromancers go, Phanora is unfathomably polite with some actual principles in the ethics of the undead.
  • Occult Detective: Par for the cause of anyone working with the Order of Magical Resonance.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: For Phanora, zombies is just elementary level. She can go several steps further of Undead Abominations. Moreover, the undead usually behave like biological robots that can be set in three modes:
    • Auto: The undead moves freely on their own accord like a live person, without the practitioner intervening.
    • Semi-Auto: The undead retains their consciousness but the practitioner has set a specific goal in their mind.
    • Manual: The practitioner fully takes over the undead like a flesh puppet.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: She is a witch, what do you expect? If she wants to, she can raise an entire army of undead to overwhelm the world of the living and have full control of them.
  • Proper Lady: Phanora dresses up quite nice and is very polite.
  • Purgatory and Limbo: Traditionally, souls often enter the Vortex of Transmigration and are reincarnated after ages pass. But with necromancy, you are forcefully extracting someone from that cycle and once removed; there is no method by which to return. Over time, the undead will decay and the soul reaches its 'second death' where they will enter a realm of nothingness where they feel eternal numbness forever. This realm is called the Void and doing nonconsensual necromancy is highly illegal and one of the few things that will piss Phanora off.
  • Red Baron: The Profound Witch is her title.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She may be a Proper Lady and dresses with class. She may also not do that much physical work. But her status as the chief necromancer plus her accompanying Death Knights means that she is a madam you do NOT want to fuck with.
  • The Stoic: There is nothing that can startle Phenora, not even the likes of Angela.
  • The Quiet One: Phanora is so soft-spoken, she barely even raises her voice to a shout.
  • Tranquil Fury: Phanora may be very soft-spoken, but break one of the undead taboos and she can quickly be one of the scariest characters in the series.
  • Undead Abomination: Phanora's Death Knights are basically that crossed with shinigami-esque knights. According to her, they are humans who willingly offered themselves to become her undead servants even when they know that nothing but the Void awaits them should they die a second time.
  • When She Smiles: It is very rare to see Phenora genuinely smile. The only time it occurs if someone she cares about (Which can be counted on half a hand) is safe.
  • World's Strongest Man: She's regarded as the best necromancer in the world.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: If she wants to, she can. But she actually spends more of her time regulating the business world of undead trafficking.

    Johan

Johan

Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka (Japanese), Kyle Phillips (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/johan.JPG

A youthful man with messy hair and wearing an eye patch. Always accompanies Phanora as her servant/assistant. Has a very snarky attitude.

  • Dead All Along: Johan is revealed to be a zombie and was dead the entire time.
  • Battle Butler: Although not really a butler, Johan is willing to get his hands dirty to defend his mistress.
  • Butt-Monkey: Although Phanora treats her servant with care, she is not above making Johan the target practice of anything really. Justified as he is an unkillable undead.
  • Complete Immortality: So long as he is maintained by his mistress, Johan can get back from his two feet as if nothing has happened. Subverted during the brief battle with the malicious mages where he was stabbed by a cursed blade that prevents his immortality from properly working.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Wears an eyepatch.
  • Made of Iron: Even more so than Guideau believe it or not. Because of his immortality, Johan survived being torn to pieces by zombies, dismembered and crushed to a blood stain via a singularity.
  • Messy Hair: His hair looks like it wasn't combed in decades.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: What his relationship with Phanora boils down to.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: Being the personal zombie assistant for the chief necromancer, Johan has several unique quirks that differentiate him from the rest of his ilk. Most notable is his appearance of looking so alive it fooled other lesser necromancers and being nearly indestructible.
  • Ridiculously Alive Undead: Despite being a zombie, Johan is exceptionally alive-looking. Given who is maintaining him, is anyone surprised?
  • Servile Snarker: Sort of. Will make quips and snarks at everyone else but his mistress.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: On the receiving end of a cursed stab wound after battling a couple of malicious mages. It is one of the few times that the normally cold Phanora raised her voice a few octave.
