The 35th season of The Amazing Race was a return to form as COVID restrictions were lifted, with teams boarding commercial flights again, as well as the return of the Express Pass and the U-Turn, the latter which was a private vote held before the beginning of the leg it appeared this time. This Race also saw thirteen teams compete for the first time and episodes that are now 90 minutes long.note  These changes along with a rather competitive roster competing in a Race that had no non-elimination legs (a holdover from the previous season) and some difficult tasks made it a well-regarded season overall.

As a side note, this is the first season of the American original version of The Amazing Race where the final three teams were all males.

Greg & John Franklin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_gregjohn.jpg
Brothers & Computer Scientists from New York City and Mountain View, California. Aside from two 8th place finishes, their athleticism, intelligence, and calm attitudes resulted in them placing in the top three the other legs, eight of which were top two finishes, and winning four consecutive legs. They were the favorites going into the final leg, but botching the glassblowing task and struggling to find the top box to the amp put them in last place for the majority of the leg. They were able to catch up to Joel & Garrett when their athleticism resulted in them beating the trapeze task faster than any team. Despite Joel & Garrett having a huge lead on them going into the memory task, their great memory of the race resulted in them making no mistakes and beating the final task on the first try, giving them the lead they needed to jump to first and win the million dollars.

Tropes associated with them:

  • The Ace: They took the mantle from Jocelyn & Victor and Steve & Anna Leigh as the main dominant team in the last half of the race, mowing through challenges that happened to cater to their skills and winning four consecutive legs.
  • Awesome by Analysis:
    • During the Leg 2 Roadblock, Greg watches every team who gets checked to not repeat their mistakes, which gets him out not only first, but faster than anyone else.
    • They chose to treat the mural Detour like a computer program, saying (after they failed the first time) they were going to "debug" it while other teams struggled with it. This leads to a second-place finish for them and their highest placement in the Race up to that point.
  • Chekhov's Skill: One of the brothers learned sign language online and used this to communicate with Rob and Corey, much to Rob's surprise. However he wasn't perfect at it, as proven in Slovenia when he tried to sign "Anna Leigh and Steve" and just went "Howdy, Texas!" instead.
  • Epic Fail: At the dancing Roadblock in India in Leg 5, John immediately failed his first attempt right as he started because he only had one bowl on his head when he needed three.
  • Genre Savvy: At the lotus-tying Roadblock, Greg tied one bundle and used his first one as a reference for the second if the first passed. He also listened to everyone else's feedback and incorporated it into his bundles, something not all the Roadblock completers did (either because they were too focused on doing the task or because certain teams had the lead).
  • Miracle Rally: Throughout the final leg, Greg and John struggled with the Seattle Scramble when they failed the glassblowing challenge for an hour and finished the grunge band roadie challenge in last. The Brothers entered the final challenge way behind Joel and Garrett when the Beard Bros were on the verge of finishing the challenge. However, due to the Beard Bros not being able to correctly switch two Roadblock Questions due to being air-related, Greg and John caught up and finished the challenge on their 1st try thus earning them the win.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted and lampshaded by Greg and John that Morgan and Lena have the same surname as them.
  • Sibling Team: One of four in this season.

Joel Strasser & Garrett Smith

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_joelgarrett.jpg
Best friends from Kuna and Meridian, Idaho. Despite their age and physique, they were able to outlast the stronger teams by keeping their composure under the stress of the season. They spent the majority of the final leg in first and seemed to be on their way to an easy victory. Despite arriving at the memory task first, they struggled more than any team when they mixed up two similar Roadblock clues. They repeatedly glossed over this error and instead focused their attention on fixing menial things like the Detour order or boat position of the previous leg where there were two Roadbocks and no Detour on a boat rack with three spaces. They spent so much time finding the mistake, Greg & John passed them forcing them to settle for 2nd place.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Joel is the short one with the beard while Garrett is the tall one with the mustache.
  • Bittersweet Ending: They came in a close 2nd place, but the awareness raised for Garrett's daughter allowed the crowdfunding campaign to reach the goal.
  • Failed a Spot Check: They forgot their fanny packs after leaving the Roadblock in Leg 2. This lost them time, as they were on their way to the next Route Marker and had to turn around to grab it.
    • A similar scenario happened with a notebook with notes for the final memory task in episode 8.
    • The most important example was at the final memory challenge when Joel and Garrett mixed up the Roadblock Questions, "Who wants to be above it all?" and "Who wants a bird's-eye view?". This mistake cost them the race as it allowed Greg and John to make a comeback.
  • In-Series Nickname: The Beard Bros.
  • Last-Name Basis: They often refer to each other as “Strasser” and “Smith”. According to their episode 8 recap, the reason Garrett is "Smythe" is because there were 3 Smiths in their platoon so they needed to distinguish themselves.
  • Loophole Abuse: Narrowly averted. Joel explains in their episode 9 recap video he wore the wooden tools on his front and was about to deliver his stuff that way, but a producer stopped him.
  • Pseudo-Crisis: Almost passing out from heatstroke and needing to stop for water while transporting bricks in Jaipur.
  • Rule of Fun: In their episode 8 recap, Joel and Garrett mentioned they had experience dealing with hay. However, they chose the beekeeping task because of this trope.
  • Workplace-Acquired Abilities: Averted with Garrett, a delivery driver, on the wooden tools task. Justified because the two alternated Roadblocks to adhere to the "too many Roadblocks" limit.

Rob & Corey McArthur

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_robcorey.jpg
Deaf father and his CODAnote  son from Riverside, California and New York City. Despite Rob being out of shape, the two were a permanent fixture for the top of the pack due to their excellent communication and determination. In the finale, they came up with the strategy of going to the furthest location first and gradually working back believing it would get them to the final task faster. Rob struggled more than any racer on the trapeze task, but they were still second over Greg & John. While they left the glassblowing in last place, what really killed them was when they read the exit number wrong accidentally using exit 175 over 157 consigning them to a 3rd place finish.

Tropes associated with them:

  • The Ace: Rob mows through most Roadblocks as well as or better than other racers, even with his status of being Inspirationally Disadvantaged. They also place higher in the Race when Rob does Roadblocks; when Corey does some to even things out (most notably the pot balancing/dancing task, where he struggled), he causes them to drop a few places.
  • Always Someone Better: They get this behind Jocelyn and Victor early on, then to Greg and John in leg 6.
  • Advantage Ball: They manage to get the second Express Pass in Slovenia.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Their sign language helped them communicate normally at the puppet Detour without clueing other teams in on what they were doing.
  • The Generic Guy: Downplayed. Rob being deaf definitely puts him far from generic, but most of their screentime is spent giving narration of what's going on.
  • Genre Savvy:
    • At the Paper Detour in Leg 3, they agreed to make an extra rice paper just in case one was wrong. This worked in their favor, as one of the rice papers didn't pass approval, and allowed the extra paper to help them finish the task.
    • They admitted that they had Rob do more of the early roadblocks because they knew the later ones would be much more physically inclined and Rob, with his age, might struggle on them. This paid off big time in the penultimate leg where there were two very physically inclined roadblocks that Corey was able to breeze through, netting them their first leg win and securing their spot in the finals.
  • Handicapped Badass: Rob, in spite of being deaf, can keep up just as well as everyone else, to the point where he was one of two people who was able to solve the word scramble on the first leg by themselves.
  • Idiot Ball: Corey telling Anna Leigh point blank that he U-Turned her and Steve.
  • Parent-Child Team: One of three this season and the only all male one.
  • Silent Snarker: Rob is prone to Aside Glances quite often, which is best shown during the Spa Day detour.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Said almost word for word by Rob upon realizing that, after he and Corey already climbed a long flight of stairs for the Express Pass, they have to climb another set of stairs in order to get the leg's final clue.

Steve Cargile & Anna Leigh Wilson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_steveannaleigh.jpg
Father and daughter from Petty and Royse City, Texas. Despite being one of the most competitive teams on the race, they started to fall back once the race shifted to Europe. In Leg 11, Steve and Anna Leigh traveled to Dublin which had two Roadblocks. However, due to Anna Leigh completing six Roadblocks, Steve had to perform both. Steve's age and shape was the biggest weakness for the team and it showed early on when Steve had trouble swimming to a buoy as well as performing the Riverdance Roadblock. Their fate was sealed when Anna Leigh struggled to navigate through the streets of Dublin, thus their run came to an end as Steve and Anna Leigh were the final team to be eliminated, earning them a 4th place finish.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Down to the Last Play: They beat Morgan & Lena in a foot race for last in Leg 8.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In Leg 8, they completely overlooked the fact that the Express Pass they were going for was already taken, costing them valuable time, and if they had gone back down the stairs normally instead of being allowed to zipline, they would have been eliminated over Morgan & Lena.
  • Farmer's Daughter: Between her name and overall appearance, Anna Leigh fits this trope quite well. However, she is a podcaster, influencer, speech pathologist and flight attendant, which are not professions one would normally associate with a person like this.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Whenever they fight, all of their competence seems to go out the window.
    • Another flaw that began to pop up was Steve's age, as it prevented him from keeping up in foot races with the other team, with him and Anna Leigh dropping from a possible second to fourth in leg 10 because of it and would ultimately prove fatal to their race in the following leg.
  • Fiery Redhead: Anna Leigh.
  • Hypocrite: Much like TAR Canada's Craig Ramsay, Anna Leigh refused to help Todd since it was a race, but took offense when Chelsea wouldn't help her.
  • Last of Her Kind: Anna Leigh entered the penultimate leg as the last remaining female racer. Unlike previous seasons with this scenario, Anna Leigh couldn't avoid elimination in the Final 4.
  • The Load: Steve became this, due to his age and shape, in the last half of the Race where his slowness in running prompted constant cries of "Come on, dad!" from Anna Leigh.
  • Loophole Abuse: Using the elevator in a building counts as being "on foot" according to Race rules, as it turns out.
  • No Sense of Direction: Once they hit the self-driving legs in Europe, they were plagued with navigation problems, which constantly put them at risk of elimination.
  • Parent-Child Team: One of three this season.
  • Read the Freaking Clue: In Leg 6, they were told at the Bricks Detour that they did not fully complete the Bundle side because after delivering the flowers to the temple, they didn't return their receipts to the vendor and went straight for the other Detour.
  • This Means War!: Upon learning that Corey & Rob and Joel & Garrett U-turned them, both imply that they are going to be looking for any way to get even. (This is unlike the Philly Jawns, who mention in a confessional Anna Leigh will find out they U-Turned her when the episode airs on TV.)

Todd & Ashlie Martin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_toddashlie.jpg
Married High-School Sweethearts from Chino, California. They were a consistent team for the most part that usually placed near the front of the pack, never winning a leg. Their end would begin in leg 9 after getting lost repeatedly, with only Robbin and Chelsea repeatedly failing spot checks saving them. The next leg, located in Stockholm, sealed their fate as, in spite of the leg beginning with an equalizer, Ashlie taking far longer to finish the Roadblock than the other teams, along with Rob and Corey and Steve and Anna Leigh working together mixed Greg and John's strength and Joel and Garret catching a series of lucky breaks, ended their run in 5th place.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Failed a Spot Check: They overshot the location of the stairs for the Express Pass in Leg 8, allowing Rob & Corey to pass them and win the Express Pass for themselves.
  • Global Ignorance: Like most Americans, Todd and Ashlie are unfamiliar with Slovenia considering that Todd (in an Instagram post) only knew it for being the home of NBA star, Luka Dončić. However, the couple takes their ignorance up a notch when they think that Dracula is from Slovenia when he's actually from Transylvania.note
  • The Load: They frequently lost leads when Ashlie did a Roadblock.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While it didn't set them back too much, Todd joking begging for the masseuse to stop during the Spa Day detour counted as him and Ashlie failing and forced them to restart. They were the only team to restart this challenge.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Todd was loudly telling Ashlie to "PIVOT!" while negotiating the mattresses up the tight staircase.
    • Todd also wore the chains he needed for a Detour task around his neck and deliberately namedropped a rapper in the process.

Robbin Tomich & Chelsea Day

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_robbinchelsea.jpg
Childhood friends from Kirkland and Shoreline, Washington. The duo faded in the background early on due to two 11th place finishes. In the megaleg, they took the spotlight by refusing to help any teams, telling the cameras they want to win, then winning that leg, which is a mentality that hadn't been seen since pre-COVID. After that, their opportunistic nature and tenacity took the mantle making them one of the biggest characters of the season making them contentious among both fans and players. Despite several close calls, the second half of Slovenia proved to be their undoing when Chelsea missed the rolling pin in the wooden utensil Roadblock. Robbin was just as responsible when she ignored Chelsea's good advice that the cavern might be near the campsite, putting them so far behind that they never saw another team despite Todd & Ashlie repeatedly getting lost and Rob & Corey switching detours, sending them home in 6th place.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Crazy-Prepared: During the lead up to the race, Chelsea would play matching games on her phone with her daughter to prepare for if a matching challenge came up. This would prove helpful on leg 4, as the final roadblock as a matching challenge, allowing them to jump from near the back of the pack to first.
  • Follow That Car: From Leg 7 onwards, their navigation strategy was to follow any team ahead of them, specifically Greg & John. It's partly what led to their 2nd place finish just behind the brothers in Leg 7.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Their mistake at the Roadblock resulted in them spending the leg in last by a wide margin, the editors didn't even try to hide the fact they were going home.
  • Obi-Wan Moment: When they knew they had no chance of catching up after the Detour in their final leg, they decided to have a swim a few hours before meeting Phil at the Pit Stop.
  • No Time to Think: Knowing that they're in the bottom of the pack, Robbin decided not to spend any time solving the coin math riddle like the other teams. Instead, she went to the gate multiple times going through each possible answer until she was allowed to pass. This move proved beneficial as it moved Robbin and Chelsea from 7th to 2nd.
  • Reformed Bully: Chelsea admits to having bullied Robbin in childhood, but is now True Companions with her having stood by each other through each other's struggles.
  • Unexpectedly Obscure Answer: Inverted. When asked what team they compare themselves to, they said that they are not Millie & Chuck. Most teams compared themselves to someone from the past five seasons.

Morgan & Lena Franklin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_morganlena.jpg
Sisters from Brooklyn, New York and Los Angeles, California. Despite showing a lot of ambition, they had a tendency to get comfortable too easily, which would result in infighting between the sisters and making impulsive decisions when faced with adversity. Because of this they bounced around the rankings quite a bit, but seemed to be safe in Slovenia due to Steve and Anna Leigh falling behind as well as missing that the express pass was already taken, but due to some poor navigation, the Father/Daughter team was able to overtake them in the footrace to the mat, taking the sisters out of the race in 7th place.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Advantage Ball: They manage to get the Leg 1 Express Pass, which they ultimately used to get past the fruit gathering task in Leg 3.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Lena took printmaking in college, which helped her during the leg 6 roadblock and allowed her to make up time.
  • Crack Defeat: Despite their navigation and interpersonal conflict, they probably would've survived the leg had production not let Steve & Anna Leigh take the zipline down after failing to acquire the Express Pass even though Phil Keoghan explicitly said the team who wins the Express Pass will be rewarded with a ride down the zipline.
  • Down to the Last Play: They beat Joe & Ian in a footrace for last in Leg, then were beaten by Steve & Anna Leigh in another footrace for last in Leg 8.
  • Fatal Flaw: Their tendency to give up tasks easily. They show a lot of ambition, but think they can outsmart their way out of a situation that could be solved by simply just buckling down. They burnt their Express Pass because of the boat congestion while delivering fruit, this would leave them with no safety net when they would struggle with the vinyl attachment Detour and tile matching, which nearly cost them the race. The next leg, despite being incredibly close to finishing, they decide to switch Detours since it's taking them too long to finish. The only reason they survived was by a stroke of good fortune that their rickshaw driver circumvented a red light.
  • No Sense of Direction: They suffered from navigational problems in Germany and Slovenia, leading to bickering while driving from task to task.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted and lampshaded by Greg and John that Morgan and Lena have the same surname as them.
  • Sibling Team: One of four in this season.
  • Strategy Versus Tactics: They used the Express Pass early at the fruit gathering task in Leg 3, because the boats were all congested and they wanted to be in the top of the pack. This would haunt them later on after they struggled with the other tasks and pushing them at the back of the pack.

Andrea Simpson & Malaina Hatcher (Philly Jawns)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_andreamalaina.jpg
College friends from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They started the race in the back of the pack, but slowly picked up speed until several mistakes added up in Germany. Upon entering Germany, Andrea and Malaina got lost when they had to travel to the ferry. To make things worse, the two friends boarded the wrong ferry and made the currency exchange with the wrong man. When they arrived at the 12 Coins Puzzle Roadblock, they realized that they didn't have the right coins and had to go back to the other side to look for the right ferry. Andrea and Malaina were so far behind, that by the time they arrived at the carnival in Cologne, the party was over and Phil proceeded to eliminate them in 8th place at the halfway point of the leg.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Aside Glance: Andrea does one to the camera when she admits Malaina and her chose to U-Turn Anna Leigh and Steve and the latter will find out when the episode airs.
  • Awesome by Analysis: In the Paper Detour in Leg 3, they were forced to wait until a team finished. This allowed them to study the rice paper making process, which allowed them to finish quickly.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Out of towners!" for when they're passing through chaotic traffic.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Each team has their own color on this Race, but the Philly Jawns have their own matching shirts and, at one point, lampshade how they're Team Pink in the pink city (Jaipur).
  • Disaster Dominoes: Their last leg in Germany was not kind to them, as they got extremely lost, hopped on the wrong ferry, received the wrong coins for the Roadblock forcing them to backtrack, and then were eliminated outside the Pit Stop by Phil at the Cologne Carnival just when all the actors had left.
  • In-Series Nickname: The Philly Jawns.
  • Malaproper: "Jigsaw" instead of "rickshaw" in India.
  • Mercy Kill: Andrea and Malaina got lost for hours upon arriving in Germany, boarded the wrong ferry, and got the wrong coins. When they arrived in Cologne, the carnival that the other teams went to was over. Instead, Phil was at the carnival where he proceeded to eliminate Andrea and Malaina.
  • No Sense of Direction: They got hopelessly lost as soon as they had to drive themselves in Germany. First, they went on the wrong ferry and managed to get even more lost from there. A woman who gave them directions told them they were 30 kilometers away from where they needed to be at one point.
  • Sassy Black Woman: Both of them.
  • True Companions: After Malaina's ex cheated on her during the COVID-19 pandemic, Andrea stood by her.

Liam & Yeremi Hykel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_liamyeremi.jpg
Brothers from Cheyenne, Wyoming and San Marcos, Texas. They stayed in the back for most of their time on the show and this would spell their doom in the second India leg, coupled with getting a rickshaw driver who was not only slow, but also got them lost, with them also struggling to find one of the locations they needed to visit and, even though Liam was able to blaze through the roadblock, it wasn't enough to save them from getting eliminated in 9th place.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Fascinating Eyebrow: Return Phil's one as they go to the Pit Stop to be eliminated.
  • I Can't Dance: During the Indian jug dancing roadblock, they both mention hating dancing, but Yeremi being the better dancer.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Downplayed, but Yeremi is the elder brother (by about a year) with the long hair, while Liam is the younger brother with the short hair.
  • Slasher Smile: Liam notes that Yeremi has this while doing the Indian dance roadblock with pots.
  • Sibling Team: One of four in this season.

Joe Moskowitz & Ian Todd

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_joeian.jpg
Engaged couple from New York City. Despite being in good shape, their lackadaisical attitude towards the race, treating it more like a vacation, made them middle-of-the-road racers. They finished the Roadblock in a reasonable amount of time, which allowed them to take up the last spot at the painting recreation Detour over Todd & Ashlie. This is a decision they would come to regret, as they would struggle on the fine details to the point that even Morgan & Lena, who switched Detours, would leave the Detour before them. In a rickshaw race to the mat, Joe & Ian passed them, but Morgan & Lena's driver knew a path that would allow them to circumvent a long red light, eliminating the couple in 10th place.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Ascended Fanboy: Both wanted to be on the Race before they met each other.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: During the Leg 2 roadblock, Ian loses one of his shoes.
  • Opposites Attract: Ian is very easy-going while Joe is extremely high-strung.
  • So Last Season: Their lack of ambition of the course would not have killed them if this was, say, The Amazing Race 33, but not having the fortune of no equalizers, a far more competitive cast, and harder tasks shows that with the normal format back, trying to effortlessly coast isn't going to work anymore.

Jocelyn Chao & Victor Limary

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_jocelynvictor.jpg
Married entrepreneurs from Albuquerque, New Mexico. They start out strong, winning the first two legs. Upon hitting the Vietnam double leg, however, the duo would ultimately struggle at several points, with both the Paper detour and the Matchmaker roadblock costing them their spot at the front of the pack and, ultimately, the race, causing them to finish in 11th.

Tropes associated with them:

  • Asian Store-Owner: They own a grocery store, which comes in handy at times such as the shopping Detour in Cambodia (where they have to manipulate a dolly) and when they hand off fruit to the floating market in Vietnam.
  • The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes:
    • Downplayed, as she's still the first person to finish, but in spite of Victor's family being Buddhist and her being well aware of it, Jocelyn struggles in the leg 2 roadblock, which is putting together a flower bouquet used in Buddhist offerings.
    • Played straight during the first part of the Vietnam leg as in spite of being very familiar with rice paper, they struggle massively with the Paper detour and nearly come in last because of it.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: They win the first two legs due to familiarity with their Workplace-Acquired Abilities and knowing the country better than the other teams. Unfortunately, the next two leg show that their skill set lies in familiarity as they struggle with all other tasks outside their wheelhouse leading to the first elimination for an early frontrunner since Seth & Olive.
  • Expy: An older Asian couple hoping to remind themselves about why they fell in love? Are we talking about them or Hung and Chee? Eventually turns into a Sucksessor of them, as despite winning the first two legs as well, they were eliminated in the second part of the Vietnam leg while Hung and Chee would make it to the finals.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: Jocelyn loses one of her shoes in the mud during the Roadblock in leg 2. John later finds it for her.
  • Married to the Job: Both of them admit to having this problem, to the point where it bled into their home life as well.
  • Opposites Attract: Victor is more outgoing while Jocelyn is quieter.
  • Workplace-Acquired Abilities: They are owners of a grocery store (in Victor's case, he's owned a store for 15 years), which makes them good at certain kinds of tasks like shopping for produce at a Cambodian market. It certainly helps Victor speaks fluent Laotian (similar to northern Cambodian) and Jocelyn speaks Vietnamese, which helps them breeze through parts of the Race set in that area.

Elizabeth & Iliana Rivera

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_elizabethiliana.jpg
Mother and daughter from Tampa, Florida. They got off to a rocky start and finished near the bottom of the pack in leg one which didn't change come Leg 2. Already at the back of the pack, they screwed up at the Shop It Detour when they didn't pay attention and grabbed the wrong ingredient. The time it took to correct this mistake doomed them, resulting in their elimination in 12th.

Tropes associated with them:

Alexandra & Sheridan Lichtor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s35_alexandrasheridan.jpg
Siblings & roommates from Chicago, Illinois. Both were shown to be uncoordinated and rather poor with directions rather quickly. Them getting the second flight and then struggling with the Sword Play detour doomed them to becoming the first team eliminated in 13th, another first in the American version.

Tropes associated with them:
