There were signs that trouble was brewing for the fourth season of Canada's version of The Amazing Race the moment it was announced. The first sign was Air Canada's and Petro Canada's refusal to be the official sponsor of this season. This was likely due to their participation in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. As a result, the producers had to cut back on a lot of things for this season. The number of teams on this season was reduced to 10, compared to 11 in Amazing Race Canada 2 and 12 in Amazing Race Canada 3. The prizes were also reduced as well, with a cash prize of 250,000 Canadian dollars, 2 cars from the race, and a trip around the world. Finally, the number of legs was reduced from 12 to 11, with the number of international legs dropping from 4 to 3 (with one leg in Cuba, not far away from Canada itself).

Knowing this, however, the producers sought to make up for these issues by improving on the course itself as well as the casting of the teams for this race. The course was considered to be an improvement over the third season: although there were still instances of Rubber-Band A.I. on this season, they were not as bad as it was during the previous two years. The tasks themselves had more of an emphasis of mental challenges instead of physical ones, but the producers had apparently borrowed a few pages from their American Counterpart as elements from some challenges (such as the Duck challenge in Leg 3 and the Ballz Challenge in leg 7) were clearly copied from there. The cast was much more well liked, as some of the contestants include the show's first blind contestant, a contestant from the Canada First Nations, and a whopping total of 5 female teams. One would think that after 3 years of a woman not winning The Amazing Race Canada, the producers were pulling out all the stops to ensure a female competitor would win, and in this case, they did. Overall, it was a good effort by the franchise, despite all of the bad things going for it to start with.

Stephanie "Steph" LeClair & Kristen McKenzie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarcan4_st_kr.jpg
Dating. They are the first all-female dating couple to be a young team (Laura and Jackie are married). They brought close reminders of Natalie & Meaghan as they finished mostly in the top 2, only finishing below 2nd place twice. Unlike Natalie & Meaghan however, they were not as well liked by the fanbase, and were also despised by the other teams for their competitive behaviour (which included lying to conceal an express pass, and using both U-turns to their advantages). Ultimately in the finale, they won the race mostly due to their consistency as the other teams faltered at various points during that leg. They became the first all-female team to win the Canadian edition of the show, as well as the first female winners of the Canadian edition, and the first lesbian team to win any edition of the program.note

  • Action Girl: Steph was one of only two women to complete the very physical Jasper Skytram Roadblock in Leg 1. They were also the only all-female team to not incur the penalty for the challenge, allowing them a spot in the top four.
    • Not only did they win three back-to-back legs, but they are also the first lesbian team to win a leg.
    • They eventually became the first female winners, and first all-female team to take the title and grand prize for The Amazing Race Canada, as well as the first lesbian team to win any edition of the program.
  • Always Second Best: They finished in second place three times in the first four legs, and finally won a leg in the 5th episode. They would win the penultimate leg later, despite losing to Joel and Ashley in the Golf Face-off.
  • The Bad Guys Win: They were the least popular female team on the race due to their competitive natures and tactics during the race.
  • Break the Badass: When Kristen had trouble with the scent roadblock in the penultimate leg, she started crying, they didn't give up and ended up passing Joel and Ashley to win their fourth leg in the race.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: Subverted during the Flip Flop Detour during the fourth leg. They thought that their softball experience would allow them an edge in the hand-eye coordination for this task. They ended up taking 25 attempts to complete this task.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Kristen failed to notice the instructions manual for the Roadblock in Leg 4 until after her first attempt.
  • Flawless Victory: Their lowest finish was during the second leg (when they went for the Express Passes), and they were only outside of the top 2 a total of 2 times on the race.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: Steph accidentally cut her fingers while cutting the sugarcane in Cuba in Leg 8. This would affect her during the physical tasks during the Highland Games detour in Leg 9.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: They have gotten multiple shots of them kissing so far.
  • I Gave My Word: Played With. Although they promised Joel & Ashley that they would not U-Turn them during Leg 7, they said that the promise didn't apply to Leg 9's U-Turn board.
  • Loophole Abuse: For the climbing wall portion of a roadblock in the 6th leg, Steph rang the cowbell with her head instead of using her hands.
  • Read The Freaking Clue: Averted. They initially took the water taxi in Leg 3, but realized in time the clue stated they needed to take the ferry, avoiding the 30-minute penalty four other teams incurred.
  • Rubberband AI: They unfortunately got the wrong end of the rubber band as, after gaining a huge lead after winning Leg 6, they were forced to wait for the other teams in Kingston in Leg 7, despite getting the first train there.
  • Schemer: The two decided not to tell anyone they had gotten the Express Passes in Leg 2 for fear they would be targeted as a result. This started to unravel in Leg 4 when they gave the second express pass to Frankie and Amy in front of Joel and Ashley. It got worse in Leg 6 when Frankie and Amy burned said express pass in front of Lowell. This got him talking to the other teams on who had the express passes in the first place with Kristen trying not to say anything.
  • This Is A Race: Their reason why they chose to conceal the express pass, and why they U-turned two separate teams (one they had promised not to U-Turn before) to win the race.
  • Use Your Head: Steph bumped the bell at the Mountain Co-Op climbing task in Leg 6 instead of using her hand to ring the bell.
  • Wrench Wench: Kristen. Not only is she good at welding but her father gave her a toolkit for her birthday.

Jillian MacLaughlin & Emmett Blois

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarcan4_ji_em.jpg
Exes and Big Brother veterans. Immediate comparisons to Brendon and Rachel were made as they were not only portrayed as the bickering couple of the season, but initially as one of the the villains on the race. Like Steph & Kristen, they were also one of the strongest teams on the race as both teams were tied for wins heading into the finale. Despite the initial negative portrayal, the editors sought to show Jillian in a more positive light during the later legs, and this caused both her and Emmett to be viewed more positively as their fighting lessened, although there were random meltdowns by Jillian during these later legs. It was during one of these meltdowns from Jillian during the finale that cost them the race, as Jillian struggled with the St. Viateur Bagel Roadblock. And despite the best performance during the subsequent Final Exam Finale, they were not able to catch up, finishing second.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Downplayed. They clearly love each other to bits, as evidenced by their post-race interviews, but knew that they had different goals for their lives and that was the real reason they could not be together.
  • Break the Haughty: They finished first place for the first two legs, but come the third and fourth leg, they start to falter at the tasks and barely escape elimination in the fourth leg. Jillian is visibly humbled by this experience and promises to treat her teammate better.
    • Happened again when Jillian nearly lost third place on the penultimate leg to Frankie and Amy and were only saved by Joel and Ashley giving false information about the task to Frankie and Amy.
  • Chekhov's Hobby
    • Emmett took apart motorcycles and put them back together as a hobby, allowing him to complete the motor bike roadblock with relative ease.
    • Emmett was a provincial hay bale rolling contest winner, which gave him the skills required to easily perform the balancing ball rolling trick in the circus roadblock in the final leg
  • Genius Ditz: Emmett doesn't know what the words inauguration, or larder mean, and he doesn't know how to distinguish Vietnam from Thailand but he's done plenty of handiwork like taking apart motorcycles and has shown especially in Big Brother Canada 1 to be very clever and cunning.
  • Global Ignorance: When arriving in Vietnam in Leg 3, Emmett referred to the country as Thailand.
  • Henpecked Husband: Even though they aren't in a relationship anymore, Emmett is this.
  • Honor Before Reason: After completing the puzzle challenge in the 5th leg, they stayed behind and helped Julie and Lowell to finish one of the pictures. Justified as just earlier, Julie helped Jillian complete the previous Totem Pole Roadblock.
  • Hope Spot: They had this in the Final Exam Finale when they heard Steph & Kristen still at their task.
  • Hypocrite: Both acted vindictively towards Steph & Kristen on Leg 8 for U-Turning them on Leg 7, even though they planned to U-Turn the girls had they made it to the U-Turn first.
  • Jerkass: Jillian is this on her bad days, making one wonder why Emmett tolerated her for so long on Big Brother Canada, let alone chose to race with her. She even looks incredibly smug when the train in Leg 7 is about to leave without Joel and Ashley while Emmett at least looks concerned.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: U-turning Ashley and Joel did not pay off in the seventh leg, since Ashley and Joel overtook them when Ashley quickly completed the prime minister roadblock and while Emmett struggled (and was the second-to-last person to finish the roadblock).
  • Motor Mouth: Jillian is quite the chatterbox.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Emmett, being a farmboy from Nova Scotia and all.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Emmett reasoned that because Steph and Kristen U-Turned them, he wouldn't help Steph with the Sugar Cane challenge, especially after Steph injured herself.
  • Read the Freaking Clue
    • One of four teams to take their water taxi to the next location in Leg 3 after the shopping task as opposed to a ferry, thus incurring a 30-minute penalty. This dropped them from third to fourth place in the leg.
    • In the penultimate leg, they didn't bother reading the clue to see that Jillian only needed to learn the English names of the plants from touch and smell because Emmett assumed that other teams were struggling from trying to learn the Latin names. They wound up competing for last place after wasting time having Jillian learn all the Latin plant names.
    • In the final leg, Jillian failed to realize that the bagels on the board were listed from top to bottom for the roadblock; she wound up loading her bagels onto the stick in reverse. Combined with a failed attempt to reverse the bagels without returning to the shop and getting lost trying to find the delivery stops, she lost valuable time.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: When they arrive at the U-Turn board, Jillian comments on how they are the most gorgeous couple of the race while there are some other good looking girls on the race.
  • Tsundere: Jillian, extreme Type A. She's usually aggressive and hot blooded, but Emmett is the only person who can not only deal with her but calm her down, similar to Brendon and Rachel in the American races, who are also Big Brother contestants. And she does have her moments of kindness also like Rachel Reilly.
  • What Does He See In Her: Given their tendency to bicker about even the smallest and mundane things and Jillian's constant Wangsting one must wonder what it was that Emmett saw in Jillian that he found attractive.
  • Working with the Ex
  • Wolverine Publicity: Being Big Brother Houseguests and all. Not to mention Jillian won.

Joel Ground & Ashley Callingbull-Burnham

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarcan4_jo_as.jpg
Stepfather/Daughter. Ashley previously won the 2015 Mrs. Universe title. They were consistently a middle-of-the-road team during the race with one win under their belt. Despite this however, they were shown to be constantly outclassed by either Steph & Kristen, and Jillian & Emmett during the entire race. In the finale, although they were second going into the final memory task just behind Steph & Kristen, they struggled with matching the clues to the legs and ended up in 3rd place.

  • Chekhov's Skill
    • Joel is an auto mechanic, resulting being the first to complete the motor bike roadblock in the fourth leg and getting through the gasket making roadblock in the eighth leg fairly quickly.
    • Ashley was able to breeze through the roadblock to re-enact a speech as John A. MacDonald on the seventh leg, since as an actress she was used to memorizing lines and performing.
  • The Ditz: After Kelly & Kate's elimination, the editors went out of their way to put this on Ashley.
  • Failed a Spot Check: They struggled with the Art Rock detour in Leg 6 as they did not see where the orange and yellow stripes were supposed to be, as well as misusing some of the stencils.
  • The Load: Ashley during the beach volleyball face-off in the eighth leg.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Ashley
  • Only in It for the Money: Lampshaded by Joel after he was the first to finish the Scooter Roadblock in Leg 4 by stating that he charges $100 an hour for his services.
  • Read the Freaking Clue
    • Ashley thought the first challenge of the race was a pronunciation challenge as opposed to a translation challenge.
    • In Leg 3, they got a 30 minute penalty for taking a water taxi after a task when the clue stated they had to take a ferry, though they still managed to secure 1st place.
    • Averted in the final leg. In a roadblock Ashley began loading her bagels onto the stick without realizing the board listed the bagels from top to bottom. She managed to realize her mistake before moving too far along the task, though it did cost her some time.
  • Rubberband AI: They missed the last train of the day to Kingston from Toronto, but since the clues for the next challenge wouldn't be released until 9:30AM the next day, they were able to catch up after taking the early train at 6AM.
  • Secret-Keeper: Knowing that they were the only team that knew that Steph & Kristen got the express passes, Ashley made them promise in Leg 6 not to U-turn them in exchange for not telling anyone else what she saw.
  • Schemer: Ashley ended up giving Frankie and Amy the wrong clue on purpose to keep them out of the finale. Up until then, they played a relatively clean game.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife/Ugly Guy's Hot Stepdaughter: Joel isn't bad looking, but Ashley definiely gets her good looks from her mom.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Heights for Ashley. She was panicking on her first attempt at the Skytram Roadblock, fortunately she was one of the few teams to complete the Roadblock. This got worse during the wall-climbing task during Leg 6.

Frankie Gassler & Amy Gassler

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarcan4_fr_am.jpg
Mother/Daughter, with Frankie giving birth to Amy at age 16. As expected of a mother/daughter team who was so close in age, they often acted like sisters - at times joking around and shrieking but also having moments when they bickered fiercely. In terms of the race, they started off as a consistent team for the first five legs (flying so much under the radar that they were given the Express Pass by Steph & Kristen), but then struggled at the bottom of the pack from then on out when they chose to use their Express Pass on Legs 6's Roadblock as opposed to the more complex Detour. However, they would soldier on and manage to survive three close brushes with elimination until Amy's struggles at the Roadblock (which coincided with Ashley's lying about which flower names they had to remember) sealed their fate in 4th place.

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: Frankie gave birth to Amy at age 15.
  • Ascended to Carnivorism: Amy may not have eaten any of the insects in Leg 4, but she still had to down that Coconut Worm.
  • Bittersweet Ending: They did not make it to the final three, but became the first mother/daughter team in the North American version of the race to finish higher than fifth.
  • Break the Cutie: Poor Amy ended up utterly broken by the final roadblock of the penultimate leg, due to getting false information from Joel and Ashley, who, up until that point have been playing a pretty clean game, if a bit arrogant.
  • Cutting the Knot
    • At the logging roadblock on Leg 5, Frankie pushed all three of the log bundles with her boat at once, instead of one-by-one like the other teams.
    • They did this in Leg 9, when they pushed all 6 barrels of gunpowder up a hill at once, rather than going back and forth, to complete the Louisberg Gunpowder task.
  • Epic Fail: Averted. Not only did they burn through the express pass to bypass the Roadblock in Leg 6, but they completely collapsed during the Dry Dock detour. They were at risk of elimination that leg, but Joel & Ashley also struggled with the Art Rock detour, not to mention that it was a non-elimination leg.
    • The Golf Face-Off in the penultimate leg also counts. They end up losing to Jillian and Emmett both of whom rarely play golf, and had to wait out a penalty.
  • Failed a Spot Check: After completing the Scooter Roadblock in Leg 4, Frankie nearly forgot to get her clue from the mechanic.
  • Genki Girl: Frankie, though Amy is not without her moments. Them finishing fourth and getting an express pass out of it caused the mother and daughter to celebrate in the most hyperactive way ever.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After finally completing the Art Rock detour in Leg 6 (where they were at a brewery) after having so much trouble during the Dry Dock detour, they each took a beer and said they needed it.
  • Loophole Abuse: At the Insect eating task during the 4th leg, Amy (a vegetarian) did not eat any of the insects, leaving her mother to eat the entire plate. She ended up having to eat the coconut worm though.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: With Lowell and Julie out of the race, these two were the unskilled team that still managed to make people smile.
  • Pratfall: Amy took a tumble while running after finishing the wall-climbing task in Leg 6.
  • Read the Freaking Manual:
    • Frankie initially failed the Logging Roadblock in Leg 5 as she did not read the part about retrieving the log bundles that had flags attached.
    • Contributed several times to their elimination in the penultimate leg. During the detour, Amy thought the recipe for molasses called for four cups of vinegar, when the recipe only asked for four tablespoons; their molasses mixture took longer to boil as a result. Then, during the final roadblock, they realized too late that Amy only needed to learn the English names of the plants she was trying to identify from touch and smell alone and they wasted valuable time having her learn the Latin names. Instead of rereading the clue, Frankie relied on a misdirection from Ashley and they lost more time trying to get Amy to memorize both the English and Latin.
  • Shout-Out: In-Universe example, as Frankie shouted "Good Morning, Vietnam" when told to fly there.
  • Strategy Versus Tactics: Their use of the Express pass to bypass the Airplane Roadblock in Leg 6 was not well thought out. For starters, they were trying to claim first place for once in the race while the Express Pass was meant to be used to save a team from trouble. They then struggled so badly with the Dry Dock detour that they dropped from 1st place to the back of the pack. Only Joel and Ashley doing worse than them during the Art Rock detour plus the non elimination leg was able to save them from certain elimination.
  • Tempting Fate: After burning their Express Pass during the Airplane Roadblock in Leg 6, they thought that they were in such good shape to win the leg. They then struggled so badly during the Dry Dock detour that they ended switching tasks, ultimately finishing the leg in 5th place.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: After eating the Coconut Worm in Leg 4, Amy went to vomit into a bucket, but the camera was not able to see anything come out. Amy would continue to make retching noises on the way to the Detour.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Mentioned in their bio.

Rita Yakibonge & Yvette Yakibonge

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarcan4_ri_yv.jpg
Twins. They were a fun, sassy team who stayed out of the limelight both race-wise and drama-wise, usually finishing in the middle of the pack save for two top-three finishes. In Leg 8, they started off strong at the Dancing Detour but slowly fell down the ranks when they were the third team at the Face Off and lost a match to Steph and Kristen. Rita's struggle at the Roadblock sealed their fate and they came in last, but were shocked to find out that it was a non-elimination leg. Unfortunately, the two made a mistake at the first task in the ninth leg when they followed Joel and Ashley to their rescue area instead of going to their own designated area. This, coupled with a U-Turn courtesy of Jillian and Emmett, led to their never being able to catch up and ultimately going home in 5th place.

  • Big "SHUT UP!": They both did this when Jon told them they were still racing in the sixth leg.
  • Failed a Spot Check: After getting their clue at Wonderland in the second leg, they thought that the building they were close to was Calgary Tower, only to realize later that it was not.
  • No Sense of Direction: Got lost heading to the Pit Stop in Leg 1 and were only spared from a ninth-place finish because of Kelly & Kate's penalty.
  • Read the Freaking Manual:
    • One of four teams to take their water taxi to the next location in Leg 3 after the shopping task as opposed to a ferry, thus incurring a 30-minute penalty. As with Jillian and Emmett, this caused them to drop a placement as a result.
    • This contributed to their elimination in Leg 9, when they struggled with rescue drill task. Because they failed to read the instructions stating they needed to go to a specific rescue location to pick up a body and instead followed Ashley and Joel (who were given a different location), they were forced to redo the task and go to the right location. Given they still had a Speed Bump (from coming in last on Leg 8) to complete and would later get U-turned, it cost them valuable time.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: In Leg 5, the two stated that they were the real threats to watch out for since they were consistently finishing in the middle of the pack.
    • In Leg 7, the two received the news that they were in 2nd place with "At last" as opposed to the excited screeching that other underdog teams have in the past.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Heights for Rita. It only became apparent during the Airplane Roadblock in Leg 6.

Julie Taylor & Lowell Taylor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarcan4_ju_lo.jpg
Married. Lowell is the first legally blind competitor. They were the obvious favorites early on with their sunny attitudes shining out every leg. Despite Lowell's vision handicap, they were able to make it past the halfway point of the race. However, they were ultimately eliminated when Lowell's struggles at the On the Field Detour forced them to switch as well as inhibit their process during the "Needle-in-a-haystack" Prison challenge. As Lowell put it, it was a very visual day that sent them home in 6th place.

  • Determinator: Being almost blind certainly didn't stop Lowell from completing the Logging Challenge (in which he had to drive a boat) during the 5th leg.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Twice in Leg 7:
    • Both failed to notice a clue in one of the first jail cells.
    • Lowell looked around another cell for the clue, but failed to see one on the ground. Luckily, Julie saw it. Justified in that Lowell can't see in the dark.
  • Honor Before Reason: Julie worked with both Rita and Jillian to complete the Totem Pole roadblock in Leg 5 and even waited for them to finish before leaving. Under most circumstances, this would have hurt them, but Jillian and Emmett stayed behind after completing the subsequent Puzzle Challenge to help them figure out the task.
  • Inspirationally Disadvantaged: Lowell.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: In no part due to Lowell being a Pungeon Master.
  • Pungeon Master: Lowell would break out puns at least once a leg.
    • During the Trout Detour in the second leg.
Lowell: I'm trying to hatch up a new plan. We're hoping to get to the tail end of this challenge.
    Julie: And get fin-nished.
Lowell: I'm not hooked on this task.
    • During the fourth leg, while Julie was doing the Scooter Roadblock:
Lowell: Gonna get her to scooter along, one screw at a time. Hope she doesn't screw up.
    • During the Prison task in their elimination leg:
Lowell: (When told that Julie saw a fork in the cell) You don't want to fork-get that.
  • Running Gag: Lowell's Puns.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Definitely the most entertaining team especially with Lowell's puns. Sadly, they finished in 6th place on Leg 7.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Julie threw up into a vomit bag while performing the Airplane Roadblock in Leg 6.
  • Watch Out for That Tree!: Lowell bumped into one of the pillars near the Pit Stop when he got separated from Julie. Justified in that his blindness made it difficult for him to see it.
  • Why Didn't I Think of That?: Lowell wished he had thought this through when they had penned in their fish in the same area as the cages. This resulted in some of the fish hiding under the cages, which enabled them to constantly fail at this task.

Kelly Xu & Kate Pan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarcan4_ke_ka.jpg
Best friends and business partners. They made a splash early on when they elected to quit the first Roadblock of the race rather than wait on line for the next tram, only barely surviving due to Anthony and Brandon taking the same penalty and checking in after them. They continued to bumble their way through the race on the second leg, being spared by a rare second leg non-elimination. Once they hit Vietnam, however, they clambered up the ranks and won the fourth leg after taking advantage of their abilities during those challenges. Alas, when the race returned to Canada, they fell right back to the bottom two when they struggled at the Route Info puzzle task, realising too late that the pieces were double-sided. Though they had a glimmer of hope when they caught up to Julie and Lowell at the second Roadblock, they were never able to make up for lost time and were ultimately eliminated in 7th.

  • Chekhov's Skill: They were able to smoke the karaoke detour by phonetically matching the Vietnamese words to similar Chinese sounding words as they were both from China and spoke the language. As a result, this gave them the advantage to breeze through the detour and ultimately win the fourth leg.
  • The Ditz: The editors seem to go out of their way to portray them as this.
  • Ditzy Genius: Despite being accident-prone and a bit airheaded, the international legs showed they could be very crafty when given the opportunity.
  • Down to the Last Play: Rita & Yvette just beat them to the pit stop in the second leg, but this was ultimately subverted as it was a non-elimination leg.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • During the Trout Detour in leg two, they had inadvertently penned in their fish on the other side where their nets were supposed to be. This resulted them in constantly running back and forth between their fish and the nets, allowing Rita & Yvette to catch up.
    • This ultimately did them in during the Puzzle Task in the 5th leg as they did not notice that the puzzle pieces had a glossy and matte sides, as they were simply trying to mash them together. By the time they realized their mistake, they were doomed to elimination.
  • Go-Getter Girl: You have to be one to give up a 9-5 job for a risky business venture, and succeed.
  • Loophole Abuse: Instead of listening to the storytellers and memorising details to match an artist to a totem pole, Kate passed the roadblock by listening to the other competitors' answers.
  • Read The Freaking Clue: See Strategy Versus Tactics. The failure to read the clue during the Sky Tram Roadblock was when they did not notice the part that detailed that they would be supported by a guidewire during the second attempt (Kelly failed her first), which essentially was supposed to make the task a whole lot easier as they would not have had to use so much upper body strength to cross the monkeybars.
  • Strategy Versus Tactics: Estimating that it would take them about 4 hours to attempt to Sky Tram Roadblock again, they decided to take the four hour penalty for it instead. However, bad weather forced the teams that stayed behind to quit the Roadblock, with a penalty much shorter than 4 hours. They wouldn't have survived the leg but Anthony & Brandon also took the penalty and were behind behind Kelly & Kate on the pit stop.
  • Tastes Like Chicken: Kelly said this during the Insect Eating Task during the 4th leg as they were able to quickly eat through the plate of insects.
  • Tempting Fate: They started off the first Roadblock feeling confident because of their backgrounds as fitness trainers, only for Kelly to fail at her first attempt.
    • In the last leg they said placements can change very fast, cue them going from first to worst
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Kate seems to fear many animals, especially birds. In Leg 3, while she managed to herd the ducks with no problem, she was scared to actually have to carry one, and she was also scared to have to carry toads for their Speed Bump task, though she did manage to accomplish the latter, while in Leg 4, the simple act of opening the door of a birdcage to allow tiny birds to fly out had her freaked out. Ironically, when having to eat bugs, worms and a bat in Leg 4, she and Kelly didn't bat an eye because eating such things is part of their culture.

Anne Morrone & Tanya Muzzatti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarcan4_an_ta.jpg
Best Friends. They had issues during the Coconut Detour during the third leg when Tanya had to stop due to dehydration. While they were able to check-in ahead of Stéphane and Antoine, the next leg did not have any equalizer or bunching point, leaving them far behind the other teams. Although they were able to quickly complete the Roadblock and the Detour during the leg, they were ultimately unable to catch up to Jillian and Emmett, resulting in their elimination in 8th place.

  • Bittersweet Ending: They said this word-for-word when they were eliminated, as they were happy to go back to their kids but still sad that they lost.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Averted. Anne is a former opera singer, which might have been an advantage for the karaoke detour; they opted against it, since Anne knew from experience that it wouldn't be easy to sing in another language.
  • Determinator: Both of them during Leg 3, especially during the ironically named Hydrate option of the Detour. Having to row upriver and carry 60 coconuts for long distances, Tanya became dehydrated. Anne allowed Tanya to rest and kept transporting the coconuts all by herself until Tanya fought through the dehydration to continue helping out and they managed to finish together.
  • Hope Spot: When the two saw Jillian & Emmett at the Detour, they felt a little more hopeful of their chances, but were still eliminated.
  • No Sense of Direction: They got lost multiple times in the first leg and were only saved from elimination because of Kate & Kelly's and Anthony & Brandon's penalty. This came back to bite them in the fourth leg where they got lost en route to the pit stop and just barely lost to Jillian and Emmett in a foot race. To explain this: both teams finished the last detour within minutes of each other and came out of the building at around the same time. They both got lost, but Jillian and Emmett's five minute head start was enough to keep them in the race and eliminate Anne and Tanya. According to one of the executive producers, they were the most directionally-challenged team in the history of The Amazing Race Canada.

  • Read the Freaking Clue: One of four teams to take their water taxi to the next location in Leg 3 after the shopping task as opposed to a ferry, thus incurring a 30-minute penalty.

Father/Son. They started off as a serious threat, staying within the top three for the first two legs. However, once the race moved to Vietnam, they fell apart at the Duck Roadblock with Stéphane accidentally helping other teams to finish the task quicker by herding ducks into their pens instead. By the time he had collected himself, they were the last team there and Stéphane was much too tired to continue, giving them a Four Hour penalty. Unfortunately, as the teams were closely bunched together this leg, they had no opportunity to overcome the penalty and were eliminated in 9th place.

  • Hope Spot: When Tanya almost fainted at the Detour, it seemed like the two might be able to surpass them should they quit the race. However, when Tanya decided to continue on they were pretty much done for.
  • Last of Their Kind: The only all-male team left in the top nine. With them out, there's only the teams with one male in the race.
  • One-Steve Limit/Gender-Blender Name: Downplayed with Stephanie "Steph" LeClair.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Because he helped out the other teams with the duck herding Roadblock in Vietnam, Stéphane got easily tired and was unable to finish the Roadblock himself giving them a four hour penalty which they could not make up despite beating Anne and Tanya to the mat.

  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Heights for Stéphane. According to Antoine he's never had to face this fear. He was one of the few teams to complete the Jasper Skytram Roadblock.

Best Friends. Though they were a physical threat, they chose to quit the first Roadblock of the season when Brandon failed his first attempt, reasoning that it would take too long to wait around for their second attempt and feeling confident that they could beat Kelly & Kate, who had also taken it, to the Pit Stop and stay in the race. However, they were never able to completely surpass them and checked in minutes later, cementing their elimination in 10th place.

  • Foregone Conclusion: Once they took the penalty, their only chance of staying in the race was to beat Kelly & Kate to the Pit Stop. Consequently, once said team beat them, it was immediately apparent that the boys were going home.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: It didn't do Brandon any good during the first Roadblock.
  • Read The Freaking Clue: See Strategy Versus Tactics. The failure to read the clue at the Sky Tram Roadblock was when they did not notice the part that detailed that they would be supported by a guidewire during their second attempt (Brandon failed his first), which essentially was supposed to make the task a whole lot easier as they would not have had to use so much upper body strength to cross the monkeybars.
  • Strategy Versus Tactics: Took a 4 hour penalty after seeing Kelly & Kate leave to avoid the long wait to attempt the Sky Tram Roadblock again. Bad weather forced other 4 teams to quit the task and wait out the time it would of took to complete it, all of whom arrived at the Pit-Stop before their penalty was over. Kelly and Kate beat them to the Pit-Stop by seconds ensuring their elimination.
