Waverly Family

    As a whole
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wav.png
Left to right: Thomas, Madeleine, Mary
  • Abhorrent Admirer: All three.
    • In both the anime and the manga, George is aware that Madeleine wants to marry him, but doesn't reciprocate her feelings. In the manga, he eventually marries her after being pressured by his father, whereas in the anime he backs out because of how terrible she is to Lynn.
    • In the manga, Thomas was attracted to a woman named Patricia Rogers, who he had known since childhood since they went to school. He was so obsessed with her that he began stalking her outside of school hours, and Patricia needs to be defended by other men from him.
    • In the manga, Mary had an attraction to Arthur Brighton and was frequently jealous that his attention went to Sarah. In the anime, this is changed to her trying to antagonize on the Russell sisters by flirting with Arthur. In both instances, he feels uncomfortable and doesn't reciprocate, and eventually slaps Mary when her insults of Sarah go too far.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: In the Italian-only tie-in comic, Madeleine has blue hair, while Mary's is brown.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The Waverlys get protagonist-like roles in the sequel manga, whereas in the anime, they merely serve as the villains until the Russells get rid of them for good in the Grand Finale.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In the manga, despite all the horrible things they did, the Waverlys had some humanizing moments and the Waverly children eventually got along with Lynn. Lynn and Mary even remained good friends 20 years later in the sequel manga. In the anime, all three are purely unlikable and driven by greed, and eventually get out of the Russell's lives after George refuses to marry Madeleine and Lynn wins the Lady's Crest. Also, see Flanderization below.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Madeleine's only concerns are her image and her wealth, and she harshly treats anyone who goes against this, while taking sides with Thomas and Mary no matter what. In the second season, Mary repeatedly abuses her power as Victor Reynold's granddaughter to bar the Russell family from gaining funds and money they rightfully have a claim to, and when she's found out, Victor is so enraged he scolds her publicly.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Thomas repeatedly antagonizes Alexandra, the Brighton's horse, while Mary kicks her cat Prince when she finds her annoying. Lynn feels sorry for Prince and decides to show kindness to him, causing Prince to leave Mary and welcome Lynn as her new owner.
  • Blended Family Drama: Lynn, Mary and Thomas do not get along at all, with the Waverly siblings constantly setting her up to be bullied or humiliated. Madeleine also blames Lynn for George's aversion to her and tries to send her back to Japan.
    • This trope is played straight in the manga where George and Madeline eventually married. This caused Lynn and the Waverly siblings fought even more now that they were part of a shared family. In the anime George breaks off his engagement to Madeleine and the Waverlys eventually leave the Marble Mansion.
  • Blue Blood: Averted. Madeleine's title is Baroness Waverly and she comes from wealth, but she isn't of blue blood.
  • Bribing Your Way to Victory: A variant of this trope occurs in the sixteenth episode. Sarah enters a painting competition, and decides to paint Lynn. Mary hears of his and also decides to enter, painting Madeleine. Mary sees that Sarah is way more talented to her, so Madeleine tries to (unsuccessfully) bribe the judges and Thomas replaces Sarah's easel with a blank canvas when she's not looking. Thankfully, Arthur retrieves the painting just in time for the competition and Sarah wins.
  • The Bully: Thomas and Mary physically and emotionally antagonize Lynn, from insults, hitting her, and breaking her things.
  • Disappeared Dad: In the manga it's mentioned Madeleine's the widow of Baron Cotton. In the anime he is never mentioned.
  • Flanderization: All three are hit with this hard.
    • In the manga, there were some moments that showed Madeleine had some humanity in her and cared for her kids. In the anime this was cut out.
    • In the manga, Thomas was a little Jerkass who eventually decided to be kinder to other people. In the anime, he's nothing but a cruel bully to Lynn.
    • In the manga, while Mary was still a Manipulative Bitch, she wasn't an obsessed rival fixated upon tearing down her rivals for the Lady's Crest, nor did she lord her grandfather's power over the Russells. The anime also makes Mary the Dragon Ascendant of the final arc, who personally formulates the downfall of the Russell family.
  • Expy: Mary and Thomas are obviously inspired by Eliza and Neil Leagan from Candy♡Candy, though in the manga they were more humanized and even sympathetic. While Eliza was a bitch For the Evulz, Mary and Thomas have an ulterior motive for getting rid of Lynn (they think she's an obstacle to Madeleine's marriage to George). Eliza also pressurized Neil to help her hurt Candy, but Thomas is more than happy to attack Lynn on his own. While Eliza is a terrible person to everyone, Mary is at least pleasant to some people. Mary even felt guilty when she caused Lynn to faint from hypothermia and put the key back so Lynn would stop searching outside, but this act is arguably meaningless considering that in the next season she tried to destroy what little wealth the Russells had left as they rejected Madeleine's wedding proposal.
    • While the Leagan's feud with Candy seems to be a case of pettiness, Thomas and Mary are unpleasant to Lynn because they view her as an opponent. In the manga, Lynn would fight back (though not stoop to their level of bullying) whereas in the anime she's often pushed to tears from their abuse.
    • In the sequel manga, Lynn and Mary even became friends and let the past stay in the pastnote , whereas Eliza never changed her behaviour to Candy.
  • Gold Digger: Of sorts. It's implied Madeleine is eyeing George because he comes from Blue Blood and owns the Marble Mansion.
  • Hate Sink:
    • Madeleine doesn't hide her contempt for Lynn, and endlessly screams abuses her, while treating Thomas and Mary as if they can do no wrong. She's also the reason Lynn was driven to leave England in the first season's Grand Finale.
    • Mary is a Manipulative Bitch who frequently bullies Lynn to petty degrees, like taunting her by taking her stuffed bunny, and revels in seeing Lynn break. Though she has pangs of guilt sometimes, what cements her as the vilest of the three is when she tries to coax the Russells to bankruptcy in the Grand Finale using her grandfather's influence. Mary is also so petty that she sabotages her own friends so they can't win the Crest, being driven by her own envy towards Lynn.
    • Thomas frequently bullies children that are way smaller than him (even physically harming them through his BB gun), and is also terrible to the staff of Marble Mansion. He has an entitled attitude towards women, especially Patricia, who lives in fear of his stalking.
    • Did we mention the time they implied Lynn was responsible for Misuzu's death?
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Waverly or Wavebury? It's likely Waverly because that's a more common name.
  • In the Blood:
    • Like their mother, Mary and Thomas are stuck-up, selfish and rude. She also defends their behaviour no matter what (though, when they).
    • Manga-only example: Both Mary and Madeleine are pink-haired harpies that have unrequited affections for a blonde English nobleman, and won't accept that their loyalty is to the Russells.
  • Jerkass: All three. Madeleine is a Rich Bitch who maltreats her house staff and routinely abuses 5-year-old Lynn, Thomas gets a rise out of being violent towards the weak, and Mary is an Attention Whore obsessed with being the best and putting others down - on top of also being a snob like her mother.
  • Karma Houdini: In the manga they never get their comeuppance for being horrible to the Russells. In the anime, George refuses to marry Madeleine, Mary ruins their reputation, and the Waverlys are out of the Russell's life for good.
  • Kids Are Cruel: Thomas and Mary are children. Their rap sheet includes heavily injuring toddler-age children, abusing their own pets, abusing other people's pets, repeated theft and causing Lynn hypothermia.
  • Meal Ticket: Invoked. Madeleine Wavebury is a VERY rich minor noblewoman who badly wants to socially ascend, and George is a high-ranked Impoverished Patrician. Naturally, Duke Woburn (who never forgave him for marrying a now-deceased Japanese woman and fathering Lynn with her) encourages him to see Madeleine as this and go the Gold Digger way. It doesn't happen in the end, but at a high price: George's Big Fancy House must be sold out to clear the family debts.
  • Never My Fault: When Thomas shoots Alexandra with his gun, Edward ends up covered in injuries while Lynn escapes unharmed. Madeleine insists that Lynn was behind it, and punishes her by locking her in the attic. When Sarah and Arthur find Thomas' bullet and prove it was his doing, she is angry and punishes Lynn by locking her up again.
  • Obviously Evil: When Mary and Thomas are introduced, the camera pans to the smug, sinister expressions on their faces while a menacing Leitmotif plays in the background.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Thomas wears a dark blue blazer and a light blue undershirt, while Mary is always seen wearing a reddish-pink dress with a frilly collar.
  • Put on a Bus: At the start of season two, they moved to Switzerland before returning for the finale.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Sort of. The Waverly children have a mother but no father, and their grandfather is an Uncle Pennybags who's involved in their lives and indulges their every whim.
  • Sadist: It's In the Blood, as Madeleine aggressively flaunts her title and status, while Mary and Thomas enjoy bullying people for fun. Lynn's Nice Girl attitude makes it easier for them to do so.
  • Shout-Out: One of the renditions of Madeleine's name is Magdalene and her daughter's name is Mary, i.e. Mary Magdalene. Thomas was also the name of one of Jesus Christ's apostles.
  • Spoiled Brat: Thomas and Mary. Whenever anyone tries to warn Madeleine of their behaviour, she won't listen. In one episode Madeleine hires a tutor, but the kids, not wanting to study, play pranks on her and blame Lynn. When it's proven they are the culprits, Madeleine refuses to listen and insists Lynn is the problem.
    • In a rare case of Madeleine calling them out for bullying Lynn ( when she was confident that George would agree to marry her, and wanted them to be nice to Lynn since she was going to be her stepchild), Thomas and Mary retorted against her, causing a pissed off Madeleine to hiss at them for their insolence. Madeleine's facial expression implied that she had finally realized how spoiled her kids were and wasn't willing to tolerate their behaviour. Thomas and Mary instantly shut up, but when Madeleine was out of the picture, they began complaining about her and destroyed the Russell's flowerbed out of rage. This implies that deep down, the Waverlys are more dysfunctional than they'd like to admit.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Madeleine and Mary have bubblegum-pink hair.

Mothers

    Baroness Madeleine Waverly

Baroness Madeleine Waverly (モードリン・ウィバリー)

A woman who Duke Warbawn wants George Russell to marry to alleviate their debts.

  • Abusive Parents:
    • She thinks Lynn is the reason why George won't marry her. She abuses her in all ways except physical/sexual, from telling her that her presence makes her, George and Sarah miserable and making her feel horrible just for existing. She also has Lynn locked in the attic regularly when she's done nothing wrong.
    • And she's not fond of Sarah either. She acts nice to her to win the Duke's favour, but she actually plans to send her off to a boarding school once her and George are married.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For:
    • In the manga where Madeleine and George actually ended up marrying, Madeleine uses her money to pay off the Russells' debts. However, George dies shortly after and the costs of keeping the Duke's castle become so abnormal that it drains up Madeleine's money. Madeleine, who had initially married with the intention of climbing up the social ladder and using her money to lure George, is now left penniless and husbandless. However, Sarah's husband Arthur (who has now amassed a lot of wealth due to working at a bank) offers to help Madeleine out and pay off the debts, on the condition that she and the Duke accept Lynn as part of the family. Left with no other choice, they reluctantly agree, and Lynn is finally declared a true Russell.
    • Averted in the anime, where she feels humiliated about George's rejection, to the point Mary is driven to make the Russells suffer because of it.
  • Berserk Button: Just the mere mention of Lynn's name within earshot of her makes Madeleine seethe.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Madeleine deliberately presents an angelic image of herself to Duke Warbawn so that he'll think she's a good fit for George. When she pays off some of his debts, the Duke is impressed and gives her authority over the Marble Mansion, and she uses her newfound authority to make Lynn's life even worse than it already is.
  • Dub Name Change: Madeleine became Maudlin in the Italian dub.
  • Education Mama: She hires a tutor for her children in an episode, though she's later fired for complaining that Thomas and Mary maltreated her. In a future episode, it's revealed that Mary attends a very prestigious school where she's a skilled tennis player.
  • Entitled to Have You: She wants George all to herself, even going as far as to repeatedly bar Lynn from seeing him no matter what.
  • Evil Is Petty: The root of why she treats Lynn the way she does. She blames Lynn for everything under the sun while taking no responsibility for her own actions, repeatedly bars her from seeing her father and sister to the point of specifically telling the staff to forbid Lynn from seeing them on different occasions, constantly goads her kids into sabotaging Lynn's happiness at every opportunity, and manipulates both George and Richard to do the same. All because she wants George all to herself and can't stand the idea of Lynn having his attention even though she's one of his biological children.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Guess what colour most of her outfits are? It also fits when you remember that purple is a colour associated with royalty, and Madeleine is a Rich Bitch.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Madeleine or Magdalene?
  • Kick the Dog: She flat-out tells a five-year-old Lynn that she hates her and that everything would be better if she weren't around, which convinces Lynn to return to Japan and stay with her grandparents until middle school. Madeleine continues her dog-kicking even when Lynn just wants to see her sick father and new baby brother.
  • Parental Favouritism: Madeleine deliberately makes sure to give preferential treatment to Sarah, Duke Warbawn's favourite, to get into his good books.
  • Pet the Dog: Near the end of the first season, there's a scene where Madeleine actually calls out Thomas and Mary for antagonizing Lynn. However, this isn't because she likes Lynn, but rather because she is George's daughter, and her future husband wouldn't like it if they bullied her. Thomas and Mary are so angry that they yell back at Madeleine causing her to lose her temper and hiss at them.
  • Rich Bitch: She is as privileged as she is cruel and petty.
  • Smug Snake: She's positive she'll marry George and is shocked when she finds out she won't.
  • Named by the Dub: Inverted in the European Spanish dub. Madeleine Waverly's name was changed to Sra. Beverly, and her first name is never mentioned.
  • Nouveau Riche: Madeleine is only a minor noble, and fits here rather well. She wants to marry George to become a full-blooded noblewoman and acts as if Marble Mansion is already hers. They eventually do marry in the manga.
  • Wicked Stepmother: Madeleine is George's would be-girlfriend and prospect third wife. She not only spoils her kids rotten, but she treats Lynn like shit and is only kind to Sarah because she wants the Duke's favour.

Children

    Thomas Waverly

Thomas Waverly (トマス・ウィバリー)

Voiced by: Keiichi Nanba/Takeshi Kusao (Japanese) Other languages

The son of Madeleine Waverly.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thomas_9.jpg
Click here to see him in the manga
  • Ambiguous Situation: Are him and Mary twins? They seem to be the same age and "Thomas" (תָּאוֹמָא) means "twin".
  • Bad Liar: Whenever he's in trouble, Thomas always lies and says he didn't do it, even when it's obvious that he did.
  • Big Brother Bully: Frequently tormented Lynn, both when they were younger and in the present day, whether it be shooting her with his pistol or threatening her with violence.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: Believe it or not, in the manga he was friendlier to Lynn and they kept in contact when she went to Japan. In the anime this is cut out and his cruel bastard antics are exaggerated.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: Only in the anime version. Think Neil Leagan, but with the terrible characteristics cranked up. While Neil was horrible to Candy, most of the time he was doing it on the whims of his sister. Thomas, however, genuinely hates Lynn.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Thomas was called Antoine in the French dub.
    • Thomas was called Camilo in the Spanish dub, while Mary became Violeta.
  • Incest Subtext: In the manga, he has an obsession with a woman named Patricia Rogers, who looks a lot like his step-sister Lynn. Thomas even once mistakes Lynn for Patricia and pounces on her, and others mention that Lynn looks like Patricia (though that turns out to be in Lynn's dream).
  • Kick the Dog: He shoots Alexandra with his BB gun, causing Lynn and Edward, who were riding her, to get thrown off and severely injured. Sarah is absolutely livid when she finds out.
  • Stalker with a Crush: In the manga, he has a crush on a woman named Patricia Rogers, and it's frequently mentioned that she tries to avoid him because he's so persistent in his affections for her that it borders on annoying.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: In an early episode, Alexandra throws Thomas off her back and Lynn tries to see if he's alright. When she comes near him he shoves her. Edward is furious about his treatment of Lynn so he punches him in the face.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He threatens Lynn and Edward with violence on multiple occassions, and this is when they're five.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: He harasses a maid until she slaps him, before running to Madeleine about how he's a victim. As she berates the maid, Thomas and Mary leer maliciously at her.
    Mary Waverly

Mary Waverly (メアリ·ウィバリー)

Voiced by: Mayumi Shou/Rihoko Nagao (Japanese) Other languages

The daughter of Madeleine Waverly and the granddaughter of Victor Reynolds. After seemingly being absent for most of the second season she re-appears in episode 22, having just arrived from Geneva, Switzerland, to enroll at Saint Patrick's school.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mary_07.jpg
Click here to see her as a teenager
Click here to see her in the manga
Click here to see her in the sequel manga, 20 years later

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: Mary's specialty is playing tennis. She views everyone else as her enemy in the race to get the Lady's Crest. Though, by the end of the series, she's publicly disgraced for sabotaging Vivian by cutting the reins of her horse. Even her own grandfather, Victor Reynolds, is disgusted at her for this.
  • Adaptational Personality Change:
    • In the manga, Mary had a crush on Arthur, behaved like a Clingy Jealous Girl over him and wept heavily when he announced his marriage to Sarah. In the anime this is cut out and she's more level-headed, but the scenario where she blackmails him into being her date for the party is kept in.
    • In the manga, Mary is a mere bully who enjoyed getting reactions out of Lynn, and would turn into a crybaby over petty things. In the anime, her Manipulative Bitch tendencies are amped up to the point she becomes the final villain of the series. Using The Chessmaster skills on par with The Joker and Lee Woo-jin, Mary formulates a plan to get revenge on Lynn and the Russells, and nearly gets away with it too. Had this not been a Shōjo anime, Mary would be in jail for her actions.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In the sequel manga Lady Lynn! set 20 years later (where Baron Gruffald, Sheikh Sharif, Charlotte Spencer and Jules make their debut), Duke Warbawn suggests that Mary has changed as a person and become nicer. This is shown as she is friendlier to Lynn and even buys pretty flowers for George's grave. She is aghast at Madeleine suggesting Thomas marry Charlotte and is told off for "speaking badly of Thomas".
  • Adaptational Villainy: Only in the anime does Mary try to get revenge on the Russells by pushing them to poverty, sabotage multiple others for the Lady's Crest and try to get Lynn expelled from her school.
  • Alpha Bitch: While in the first season, Mary was more of The Bully, by the second-season she's become a full-fledged Alpha Bitch. She's obsessive, tyrannical, passive-aggressive and ready to throw her own friends under the bus for her own goals. Mary often plays the victim in front of her grandfather, Victor, to make him feel sorry for her and enforce his wrath on anyone who's hurt her. She leaves out that in most times, the people she asks him to penalize haven't done anything wrong, or were provoked by her first. Victor is moved by Mary whenever she pulls out the waterworks, but when he finds out that she's a chronic liar all along, he's enraged, scolds her and tells her she's been spoiled.
  • Ambiguously Bi: In the sequel manga, Mary brings home a friend from college named Charlotte Spencer. She does her best to impress her and when Charlotte starts getting friendly with Lynn, Mary gets angry and begins putting her down, before grabbing Charlotte's hand and insisting they leave. She doesn't like it when Charlotte gets close to other people. She also speaks highly of Charlotte to Duke Warbawn and hopes he'll accept her.
    • After learning of her heritage, Madeleine suggests Thomas marry Charlotte. This offends Mary and she instantly shuts it down. However, she adds that Charlotte deserves someone more noble than Thomas such as Arthur (who's already dating Sarah).
    • However, in the same series, she falls for Count Percival Blakenly, Lynn's friend who rides horses, and he is implied to also like her back.
  • Ambiguous Situation: In the anime, Mary's fate ends with her being punished by her grandfather Victor Reynolds for every bad thing she's ever done to Lynn and the Russells. The last we see of her is him grabbing her by the arm as he hauls her off the stadium - whether Madeleine and Thomas knew of it is left unknown. Averted in the manga, where the Waverlys and the Russells are still on speaking terms and Mary is still a part of Lynn's life years later.
  • Arch-Enemy: Lynn Russell. She initially looked down on her as a step-sister and would play pranks on her. When George ended his engagement to Madeleine, Mary believed Lynn was the reason why (not realizing that George would have never married Madeleine anyway) and decided to punish them by ruining the reputations of the Russells in any way she can.
  • Arc Villain: In both the anime and manga, but in different ways.
    • Manga: After Lynn returns to Japan, Mary moves there a little later so she can make her life hell. Mary hides the letters that Sarah and George have been sending her, and when an important tournament comes up, Mary cuts the reins of Lynn's horse and causes her to fall. Once she's caught in the act, she's disgraced and Sonoko ends her friendship with her, but Mary doesn't care and returns to the UK.
    • Anime: In Season 2, it's revealed that Mary has still not gotten over George rejecting her mother. As she's now more prepared and academically inclined, she joins Lynn's school with plans of ruining her reputation, and using her connections with her grandfather to push the Russells out of their noble status.
  • Belated Child Discipline: She is constantly indulged by her rich grandfather Victor Reynolds. However, when Edward reveals to him that Mary is actually a Spoiled Brat who caused Vivian to become injured by slashing her equestrian equipment during a race, he is so angry that he decides to no longer support her. We don't see how exactly he punishes her, but it's implied she's in some deep shit...especially as Vivian's father and Mary's grandfather are business partners.
  • The Bus Came Back: Returns to the cast in episode 22 of the TV series, after having spent some years in a Swiss Boarding School. A mere Spoiled Brat in the first part, she becomes Vivian's Dragon with an Agenda and The Rival to Lynn, as well as a massive Smug Snake.
  • The Dragon: Mary assists her cruel mother in trying to get rid of Lynn, likely because she views her as competition, and is irked at not being the sole child of the house (apart from Thomas). With Sarah out of the way thanks to being at a sanitorium, Lynn is the prime target for her bullying and harassment.
  • Character Development: In the sequel manga, Mary shows her growth as a person by refusing to excuse her mother and brother's actions, and prioritizing Charlotte's safety over them. While she is still a jerkass to Lynn, she treats her with courtesy and respect she would have otherwise never shown in the prior manga.
  • The Chessmaster: Mary is brilliant at manipulation, and as George scrambles to salvage the Marble Mansion, Mary exploits the Waverly's business connections to make sure he doesn't get it while also setting up Lynn to take the fall for Vivian's accident.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: In the manga, she had a crush on Arthur, and hated that his heart belonged to Sarah. This is cut out of the anime.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Near the Grand Finale, Mary reveals that she's been planning her Revenge on Lynn by herself, starting with destroying her chances at getting the Lady's Crest and then cutting off support the Russells receive from everyone else.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Twice.
    • First on the list is punishing Lynn for "ruining" her mother's engagement to her father, when in reality her mother was such an unpleasant woman it drove him away.
    • Mary manipulates Lynn via promising to help her get Marble Mansion back — but only if she relinquishes her bid to the Lady's Crest that both of them want so badly.
  • Dub Name Change: Mary was called Violeta in the Spanish dub, while her brother became Camilo.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She feels horrible after stealing the Lady's Key from Lynn and puts it back, but by then Lynn has ventured out in the snow to look for it and faints from the atmosphere. Luckily, Alexandra breaks out of her stable and shows Edward and Arthur where she is.
  • Evil Is Petty: She tries to scapegoat Lynn for everything she does, because it's easy to. In the second season, this takes an extreme turn as she's willing to change schools just to get Revenge on Lynn.
  • Evil Redhead: She has red-pink hair and is the primary antagonist for the second half of the season.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: : By season 2, she's shortened her hair to look more like Madeleine, hinting at her role as the Dragon Ascendant.
  • Fatal Flaw: Mary's two fatal flaws are Greed and Envy.
    • It's implied she wants her mother to marry George so she can have the noble title of the Russells, despite already being a Rich Bitch herself. When her marriage attempt, fails, she turns into a Green-Eyed Monster.
    • Mary desires the Lady's Crest despite not being a student of Saint Patrick's and only joining to one-up Lynn. Despite this, she become so desperate for it that she sabotages Vivian, the only other person that can outdo Lynn.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has reddish-pink hair and a burning desire to destroy Lynn's happiness whatever the cost. In one episode her face even fades to fire as she thinks of Lynn.
  • Final Boss: In the second season. Mary forces Lynn to abandon all hopes of chasing the Lady's Crest (which would resolve the Russell's financial situation) while working towards keeping the Russells in poverty. If it wasn't for Sophie telling the others and all of Lynn's friends convincing her to go for the Lady's Crest anyway, Mary would have won.
  • Foil: Both Mary and Sophie antagonize Lynn because of their mothers and feel guilt for it, but while Sophie eventually turns against her mother, Mary believes that she must do more for her, and becomes the Dragon Ascendant of the final arc.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She's jealous of Lynn and Vivian because she views them as competition for the Lady's Crest, so she manipulates both of them into refraining from it. Had she let her envy go just once, she would have seen Vivian crush Lynn.
  • Has a Type: Both her crushes, Arthur Brighton (for most of the manga) and eventual love interest, Count Percival Blakenly, are blonde men with gentle personalities and aristocratic backgrounds. They also both have an affinity for horse-riding.
  • The Heavy: In the second season, she is the root of the Russell's inability to gain wealth, from having her grandfather stop George from receving money to barring Lynn from competing for an award that would resolve her family's financial issues. She even ruins Vivian's chances at being an Olympian just so she can pin it on Lynn, which ends up motivating Lynn further to compete and win no matter what.
  • It's Personal: Mary never forgave the Russells for rejecting Madeleine and wants to see all of them, especially Lynn, crushed under her.
  • Jerk Jock: Condescending, rude, selfish and a complete prick to Lynn. When she realizes George isn't home and Madeleine is, her bullying of Lynn turns from subtle to outright aggressive. Because she is protected by Madeleine, Mary has never faced consequences for her behaviour and repeatedly gets away with taunting her. Mary is also skilled at tennis, and implied to be incredibly physically strong at times because of how easily she carries heavy objects.
  • Manipulative Bitch:
    • In one episode, Madeleine hires a tutor for Mary and Thomas. Mary doesn't want to study, so they play pranks on the tutor and blame it on Lynn, who Madeleine punishes. When the tutor finds proof that Lynn is innocent and it was actually Mary and Thomas, she tells Madeleine. However, Madeleine refuses to believe her and asserts Lynn did it, firing her afterwards and letting Mary and Thomas go scott-free.
    • Mary and Vivian host a party and invite all their mutual acquaintances. Mary blackmails Arthur by saying that if he doesn't come as her date, she'll reveal to Lynn that George's deal to secure funding for the mansion has failed. Arthur is crestfallen but accepts, and Mary takes pride in knowing that Lynn will be hurt to see her with her friend. Edward declines the invitation but when Phillip tells him Arthur is arriving as Mary's date, he's furious (knowing that Mary has been a mean bully to Lynn ever since she started living at the Marble Mansion) and punches his brother in front of everyone.
    • Mary knows that Vivian likes Edward. She tells her she should compete against Lynn in a horse race to impress him. Then, Mary tells Lynn that George is unable to buy the Marble house and if she wins the race against Vivian, she can receive monetary compensation from insurance. In actuality it's all an elaborate scheme to get rid of both the girls in the race towards the Lady's Crest - she secretly cut the reins of Vivian's horse, while making it look like Lynn did it. Mary then insists Edward and the Principal arrive at the scene; upon seeing Edward Vivian is distracted and falls off her horse. Lynn is blamed for sabotaging her.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Mary blames Lynn for why her mother's marriage with George fell through and strives to make her life hell because of it. She's likely aware George never loved Madeleine, but was hoping to get her hands on his title and prestige.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: At her old boarding school, Mary excelled in tennis, and at Saint Patrick's, she impresses her classmates with her tennis skills.
  • Pink Is Feminine: She has a bright pink bow in her hair, and also wears a dress with a pink collar.
  • The Rival: In the manga, Mary was this to Sarah because they both had crushes on Arthur, and were toe-to-toe when it came to their skills. In the anime, this is retained to Mary and Sarah being rivals at painting, where Sarah's skill level far exceed's Mary's. In season two, Mary comes to view all of Saint Patrick's as this for the Lady's Crest, particularly Vivian and Lynn, and decides she'll knock them out of the game no matter what.
  • Sore Loser: When she loses the tennis match to Catherine, she spends the rest of the day sobbing into her pillow.
  • Stupid Evil: Had Mary not sabotaged Vivian, Vivian would have beat out Lynn for the Lady's Crest, thus preventing Lynn from honouring her promise to Victor and letting the Russells fall into poverty.
  • Stylish Sunhats: After spending a whole semester sabotaging Lynn, Mary dons a cherry-red sunhat with a golden ribbon has a red gemstone to hold it in place as she's going to return to Switzerland. However, her grandfather stops her, and scolds her.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: In the manga, there's an arc where Mary comes to stay in Japan, and lives with Lynn's grandparents. She acts hostile to them the entire time, feeding the food they give her to her dog, Wales, and demanding they pamper her with expensive food. She also critisizes them for not having their own live-in butler.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Losing the match to Catherine and watching Lynn succeed drove Mary on the edge and she swore to make Lynn suffer.

  • Cool Old Guy: Lynn views him as this after he reveals that he's willing to help her get the mansion back, provided she win the horse race.
  • Doting Parent: Grandparent in this case. He enrolls Mary at St. Patrick's school at her request, and also expresses concern that Thomas hates London now because of the Russells.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even he is disgusted by Mary's true nature after it's exposed to him, and he declares that he has no love for her anymore. Meanwhile, he sees Lynn's potential as a horse rider and offers her a small loan that could save the Marble Mansion if she wins.
  • Evil Is Petty. He doesn't like George because he refused to marry his daughter, hence abusing his power to make his life miserable.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: He looks like Vladimir Lenin. At one point he even reclines in his seat similar to how Lenin did.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: In one episode, George expects a shipment of cargo from America, hoping to use the proceeds of the sale to pay off his debt. Before it reaches him, it catches fire. Reynolds uses his power to make sure George can't receive insurance money.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: Wanted Madeleine to marry George because as rich as he is, he's not nobility.
  • Uncle Pennybags: He is a wealthy man and indulges Thomas and Mary in whatever they ask for. Though in a twist, at the end he also becomes this to Lynn and offers to help George buy back the Marble Mansion if she proves she's worthy of it.
