Rolland family

    As a whole
  • Nice Guy: All of them were pleasant people who tried to keep their fellow Parisian commonfolk together when they couldn't access food.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Subverted. With Lillian's golden-blonde hair, you'd think Simone inherited it from her. However, it's later revealed that Simone is adopted, so she's not actually their child.
    Simone Rolland

Simone Rolland (シモーヌ・ロラン) /Simone de Forges (シモーヌ・ド・フォルジュ)/La Seine No Hoshi

Voiced by: Terumi Niki (Japanese), Stéphanie Murat (French), Cinzia de Carolis (Italian), Celine Fontanges (German), Seyeong Yujin/Jeyong Miyeon (Korean)

The main character, a fifteen year old flower girl from rural France who works at her parent's shop. She is largely unconcerned with fighting and politics and prefers to keep to herself and her fellow commoners. When her best friend Milan is arrested for his political activities, she decides to appeal by visiting Duke de Forges and asking for his help. The Duke takes an interest in Simone and makes her his aquaintance.

Shortly afterwards, Simone's parents are killed by the forces of Madame Catherine. As her father dies, he confesses to her that she's adopted. Simone is distraught, but the Duke takes her in and treats her as his daughter, alongside his son Robert. Simone then starts attending a convent for the elites, and after witnessing further injustices done to the poor, she decides to fight as the masked heroine La Seine No Hoshi.

As La Seine No Hoshi
Post-Timeskip
In the manga
  • Action Girl: Simone wields a rapier and knows how to use conventional weapons, learning on the job as she fights as La Seine No Hoshi.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: The manga has Simone's eyes coloured as green instead of blue.
  • Ambiguously Christian: She wears a cross necklace and attended a Christian school.
  • Animal Companion: La Seine No Hoshi has an owl named Corot. In battle, she fights with a white stallion that Robert gifted her.
  • Babies Ever After: Her fate in the Grand Finale with Robert is marrying him and adopting the children of Marie Antoinette, being their stepmother.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Simone's hair bow and hat are blue, and as a superheroine she wears a blue cap with a white star.
  • Break the Cutie: At a young age, Simone watches her adoptive parents become massacred, her next set of adoptive parents become exiled, her friends sentenced to Execution and is exposed to the filthy political underbelly on France. Needless to say, she's been through a lot.
  • Childhood Friends: Simone and Milan, until Milan went to the United States of America. They're happy to be reunited, and fight together later on.
  • Country Mouse: She grew up in Île de la Cité, a rural, isolated part of France, and was very close to her fellow commoner Parisian folk. That was until her parents were killed and she was adopted by de Forges, where she then attended a convent for the highest nobles and began mostly associating with people from fellow noble families.
  • Domino Mask: As La Seine No Hoshi, she wears a frilly red mask around her blue eyes.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • French dub: Mathilde Pasquier.
    • German dub: Nadine Lorraine.
  • Dreamworks Face: Makes one on the official soundtrack cover of the show.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Simone is friendly to humans and animals alike, and in battle, her Animal Companion is a white horse.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Simone has long, blonde hair and innocent blue eyes, and fights against the corrupt elite of Paris. Even as a civilian, she was this - she went to Duke de Forges to plead for her friend Milan to be freed when he was arrested for his revolutionary activities.
  • Happily Adopted: Though she didn't know she was adopted, she had very loving parents and was broken when they were ordered to be killed by the aristocrats. She is later adopted by the de Forges family.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Ever since she was 15, she was tutored in fencing by Duke de Forges. She wields a rapier and often engages in sword fights.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Simone Rolland or Simone Lorraine?
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She has round, marble-like blue eyes and is a curious, heroic little girl.
  • Kid Hero: She is a young, fifteen year old child at the start of the story, who was then tutored by the Duke himself and learned how to be a skilled acrobatic.
  • Motifs: Stars. It's in her name ("La Seine No Hoshi" —> "Star of the Seine"), and her cap has a white star on it.
  • Plucky Girl: When Simone is told not to join the mob in rescuing Milan, she seemingly agrees....and then waits for her parents to fall asleep before jumping out the window, ready to save him no matter what.
  • Princess in Rags: No one would have guessed that a girl who works at a flower shop in a rural area of France would actually be the true daughter of Franz I.
  • Princess Protagonist: Though she was oblivious of this fact for most of her life, with very few Secret Keepers in her life knowing the truth.
  • Red Is Heroic: La Seine No Hoshi wears a lot of red, such as her Cool Mask and the innards of her cape. See here. However, her cap and other accessories are blue.
  • Royal Blood: She is the daughter of Francis I, Duke of Lotringen. She's aghast to find this out, as it means she's related to the aristocrats she despised.
  • Royal Rapier: Subverted. The titular hero was trained in fencing by a nobleman (and is engaged to his son), but carries a similar-looking but much heavier basket-hilted straight-bladed cavalry sword. She did once fight a nobleman who had one... And broke it, as rapiers are not suited to block such a heavy sword.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Simone is the daughter of Franz I, husband of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, and an opera singer. This means she is Marie Antoinette's half-sister. However, she doesn't find this out until much later, with her adoptive father telling her she's not their biological child he succumbs to his death.
  • Sensual Spandex: When she's being tutored by Duke de Forges, she wears a light blue/pink spandex that resembles a ballet dancer's suit. See here.
  • Stellar Name: Her superhero name translates to "Star of the Seine".
  • Strong Family Resemblance: To her half-sister Marie Antoinette, specifically their faces and blonde hair.
  • True Blue Femininity: Most of her Unlimited Wardrobe clothes are blue, and her suit also has a lot of blue and red on it.
  • White Stallion: As La Seine No Hoshi, she rides a white horse into battle.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: She dons a wide variety of fancy clothes throughout the show, despite the fact that she's supposed to be poor. To be fair, quite a few episodes show that she's skilled at sewing, so it's not out of the question that she made them herself.
  • You Killed My Father: The aristocrats had her parents murdered, and Simone hates each and every one of them.
    Paul & Lillian Rolland

Paul Rolland, Lillian Rolland

The adoptive parents of Simone.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rolland_9.png
  • Always a Child to Parent: Even if Simone is fifteen years old, she still has to abide by their bedtime rules, and they try to make her feel better with food.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Paul's are thick and brick-shaped.
  • Big Fun: Paul certainly isn't ugly (just a bit tubby and balding), but still looks like a kindly old man, whereas Lilian is a pretty, humble lady.
  • Doting Parent: Very much. As Simone cries at the arrest of Simone, they both assure her everything is going to be okay and try to calm her down with other activities.
  • Good Parents: They were very kind and caring to Simone, tending to her every need and being overly doting.
  • Meaningful Name: Simone's adoptive mother is called Lillian, and she's a florist.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Their death at the hands of Madame Catherine is what motivates Simone to become a vigilante heroine.

Milan

Simone's childhood friend, who is very close to his fellow Parisian citizens and aims to help them in any way he can. When he's back in France, he once again leads an uprising of civilians ready to take on Marie Antoinette and the other nobles, this time actually successful.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the German dub he was named Mirand.
    • In the Italian dub he was named Miran.
  • Eagleland: La Seine No Hoshi and Black Tulip help him escape to America when he's on the run from the French police.
  • Hates Rich People: He hates the bourgeoise elites because they use their power to oppress the poor. He later becomes the leader of a revolutionary movement against them. When he finds out about Simone's true parentage he's also shocked, but trusts that she is one of the good ones and refuses to hate her.
  • The Not-Love Interest: While Milan and Simone often act Like an Old Married Couple, her eventual love interest is Robert.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danton.png
  • Ambiguously Brown: Danton is Spanish, and a bit of a dark skinned redhead (given he probably has Mediterranean heritage).
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: In episode 23, "Angel's Black Arrow", he disguises himself as a girl and infiltrates Count Wasanoff's ballet school under the name "Cocklico", in order to neutralize a plot to assassinate Marie Antoinette.

  • Kiddie Kid: He's young at heart, playful, loves animals and like a little brother to Simone.
  • Happily Adopted: In the Grand Finale, Simone and Robert adopt him and raise him alongside Marie Antoinette's kids.
  • Older Than They Look: By the Grand Finale, while Simone looks a little older, he looks the same as he did years ago.
  • Tagalong Kid: Simone underestimates his ability at first, but he proves that as a circus boy, he's capable of acrobatics and reflexes most ordinary people aren't. She then decides to let him help her in her heroic exploits.
  • Unfortunate Names: His Attractive Bent-Gender name is Cocklico. It's best not to think too hard about it.

de Forges family

    As a whole
  • Badass Family: The de Forges family know how to wield swords and stand up to the tyranny of their fellow nobles. It was Duke de Forges who taught Simone how to duel with swords and his son who encouraged her to be a hero. Out of all the aristocratic families, they're the only good ones and look forward to the day La Seine No Hoshi fells the corrupt bourgeois.
  • Impoverished Patrician: In the end of episode 13, the de Forges' estate is confiscated and they are exiled, and Robert is slandered as a murderer for something he didn't do. Robert eventually manages to clear their name, though the damage is already done.
    Duke de Forges

Secretly, he promised her to her biological father that he would always care for Simone no matter what. He is slain by Hans Kaunitz, his former friend, for choosing Simone's safety over helping him exploit her.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/il_tulipano_nero_la_stella_della_senna_anime_conte_vaudreil.jpg
  • Action Dad: He knows how to wield blades and passed on his skills to Simone. Before he died, he told Robert of her true origins and entrusted him with his mission.
  • Cool Old Guy: Like his son, he doesn't tolerate the aristocrat's oppression and believes that the people of France deserve better. He also had a reputation of being a benevolent aristocrat, hence Simone asking him for help.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • He was named Comte de Vaudreuil in the French dub.
    • He was named Conte De Voudrel in the Italian dub.
    • He was named Marquis de Vaudreuil in the German dub.

It later turns out that he sought out Simone specifically as she is the daughter of his old friend, Emperor Francis I, and was tasked to be her protector when he wasn't around.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He is slain by Kaunitz in front of Robert for refusing to give up Simone. While the Duke lives for a while, he tells Robert the truth about her before succumbing to his wounds.
  • Secret-Keeper: Duke de Forges and Francis I of Lotringen were good friends, and he knew Simone was his daughter. That's why he took a shine to her, because he promised him he would always keep her safe.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Duke de Forges was once a companion of Hans Kaunitz, the two men eating, fighting, riding and sleeping together as brothers-in-arms. This changed when Kaunitz chose wealth over his friendship with the other nobles and tried to use Simone for money.

    Robert de Forges

Robert De Forges (ロベール・ド・フォルジュ)

Voiced by: Taichiro Hirokawa (Japanese), Stéphane Bazin (French), Carlo Cosolo (Italian), Christian Rudolf (German), Son Monil (Korean)

The only son of Duke Forges and Simone's adoptive brother. His father entrusted him to care for Simone after his death. He was taught how to fight by the Duke and is far more skilled than La Seine No Hoshi, fighting enemies more gracefully and without any trouble.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blacktulip_1.jpg
  • Always Save the Girl: He honours his father's words to always keep Simone safe no matter what, even if it means revealing her secret to Milan and the rioters so that they don't cast her out as another "corrupt bourgeoisie".
  • Babies Ever After: At the end of the anime, Simone and Robert, now Happily Married, shack up and adopt the children of Marie Antoinette.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the first episode, no less. As Gerome closes on the protesting civilians, La Tulip Noire appears and proclaims he challenges him to a duel. As Gerome stares in shock, he shouts this:
You shall abuse your power no more, Gerome!
  • Blue Blood: The de Forges are a noble family, and his father was even friends with Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor. While they're later exiled and humiliated, Robert still retains his pride as a de Forges and fights as La Tulip Noire.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Duke de Forges appointed Robert as Simone's protector. He acts like an overprotective guardian to Simone as La Tulip Noire, and also grows to have feelings for her.
  • Clear My Name: The de Forges is accused of plotting an Assassination Attempt on Louis XVI and exiled as a result. While trying to prove their innocence, Robert is tipped off about Largo, but captured by Zaral afterwards. He is eventually exonerated when the true perpetrator is found out to be none other than the king's cousin, the Duke of Orléans.
  • Declaration of Protection: After his father tells him the truth - that Simone is actually of Royal Blood and is Marie Antoinette's sister - he vows to defend her to the very end, even if she doesn't know the truth about her own origins.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • He was named François de Vaudreuil in the French dub.
    • He was named Claude in the German dub.
  • Hunk: With his broad shoulders and delicate looks, he's this. Simone eventually ends up falling for him and they marry.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Anything La Seine No Hoshi can do, he can do better, due to being born and raised in a noble family and being taught sword-wielding at an elite academy. However, he's still prone to his own Badass in Distress moments and needs Simone to save him.
  • Missing Mom: His mother is never seen. It's implied she died when he was young and he was raised by a single dad.
  • Princely Young Man: He merely wants justice to come to the nobles that slaughtered Simone's family, is endlessly supportive to Milan's ideals of freedom, and a good friend and protector to Simone.
  • Secret-Keeper: He knows that Simone's true parents are Francis I and an opera singer. However, he knows the truth would break Simone, so he hides it until she eventually finds out elsewhere.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Robert's friendship with Simone eventually bloomed into full love, and he's never taken his eyes off her ever since. She feels the same way.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Despite being a noble, he is nothing like other ghoulish, aggressive elite and treated Simone as an equal well before he found out she was really of Royal Blood.
  • Stylish Sunhats: As La Tulip Noire, Robert wears a black sunhat with a white feather that curves upwards, and a Domino Mask, while also carrying a fencing sword and a whip.

French Royal Family

    As a whole

  • Artistic License – History: So much, just to push the eventual Plot Twist that Simone is Francis I's long lost daughter. While he did have 16 children in Real Life, Simone being his child makes no sense because the anime implies she was born in 1774, while he died in 1765. He also wasn't friends with the de Forges, nor did he sleep around with some opera singer he met on a whim.
    • Absolutely everything about Marie Antoinette in the anime is completely made up, from her having a little sister in Simone to her smug personality, and her rivalry with other nobles. The only thing it gets right is her parentage.
  • The Beautiful Elite: As royalty, they're always dressed gorgeously for the public eye, make sure they have the most top-notch of outfits, and bathe in luxurious items. Marie Antoinette in particular loves roses and decorates her gowns with them.
  • Historical Domain Character: Marie Antoinette, her husband, her father, and their entire bloodline were Real Life people, and are prominent characters in the anime.

    Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette (マリー・アントワネット)

Voiced by: Reiko Muto (Japanese), Anne Kerylen (French), Sonia Scotti (Italian), Ela Nitzsche (German), Park Yeonghui (Korean)

In Real Life, Marie Antoinette was the Queen of France, the child of Francis I, the Holy Roman Emperor, and Queen Maria Therese, and the wife of Louis XVI. In the anime, she is a monarch who's more or less indifferent to the suffering of her citizens.

Post-timeskip
Manga

  • Always Someone Better: Madame Catherine seethes at the fact that Marie has it all - she's pretty, royalty, is Happily Married and well-liked by everyone. She's always trying to upstage her, and when she can't, her ugly side comes out and she takes it out on innocents.
  • Assassination Attempt: Marie is targeted by an assassin for being the Queen, but Danton averts it from occuring.
  • Beehive Hairdo: She has long, blonde hair that is bound into this hairstyle and held together with diamond clasps.

  • Cool Big Sis: When Simone finds out that Marie is her half-sister, she is horrified. Marie also refuses to believe it. However, the two women eventually decide to embrace their heritage, with Marie taking on this role towards Simone. Unfortunately, it doesn't last for long.
  • Execution: Marie is executed in The French Revolution, and accepts her death. Simone and Robert rescue her children and raise them as their own.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Knowing that she can't escape The French Revolution, Marie Antoinette faces the guillotine with no regrets before bidding goodbye to Simone and hugging her.
  • Flower Motifs: As noted on the main page, the anime loves this trope in regards to it's prominent female characters, and for Marie it's roses. All of her glamorous dresses have roses in some way or the other, and her ringlets post-timeskip also resemble them.
  • Fluffy Fashion Feathers: She often wields a blue fan with shades of dark blue at the tips.
  • Foreshadowing: In the first episode, Paul tells Simone that she has a sister in the Palace of Versailles. He doesn't say her name, but Marie has a staggering resemblance to Simone...
  • Ojou Ringlets: She has hooped ringlets alongside her long, blonde hair.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: When Marie is introduced, we see her wearing a gorgeous dress decorated by black roses, and her future appearances emphasize that she's a very fashionable lady.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: Her default dress is baby pink with white sleeves and highlights.
  • Proud Beauty: She's not vain by any means, but she is a pretty lady and knows it. This is why Catherine is very jealous of her.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Marie has the same hair colour, facial shape and elegant features as Simone, who is her paternal half-sister.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Marie owns several different GorgeousPeriodDresses and is proud to show them off at balls.

    Louis XVI

Louis XVI (ルイ16世)

Voiced by: Oshu Han (Japanese)

The husband of Marie Antoinette, who's an extremely incompetent ruler and reviled by his subjects.
  • Dirty Coward: At first, after finding out Simone and Marie Antoinette are sisters, he tries to take Simone's side and save her from the aristocrats. After realizing he's ruined his reputation in the eyes of his people, he refuses to save her and accepts the death penalty.
  • Happily Married: For all his flaws, he genuinely loved Marie Antoinette and their two children.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: He's a good-hearted man who comes from wealth, but he's absolutely clueless when it comes to running a country.

    Francis I

Francis I (ロートリンゲン公フランツ1世)

Voiced by: Kohei Miyauchi/Noriji Yanami (Japanese)

The father of Marie Antoinette, and the Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Lorraine and Bar, and Grand Duke of Tuscany. He is also the biological father of Simone Rolland.
  • Best Friend: With Duke de Forges, to the point he entrusted him with raising Simone after he died.
  • Parents as People: He secretly desired to raise Simone, but his royal duties got in the way. He wanted her to have a happy childhood nonetheless, so she was entrusted to the de Forges, who then entrusted her to the Rollands.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: His most prominent act was fornicating with an opera singer and eventually birthing Simone, and was deceased by the start of the story.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The music box he gave to Marie Antoinette has a hidden message: My beloved Marie Antoinette. You have a younger sister. If you really want to confide your heart, please visit de Forges., and confesses that he had a child with another woman

Other aristocrats

    As a whole
  • Hate Sink: They don't view the commoners as human and only see them as sources of labour, even finding their protests for ther living conditions to improve as a nuisance. They're also not above using violence to keep them in place and willing to kill children.
  • Jerkass: Every noble depicted here is cartoonishly evil (seriously, Crozier wanted to kill Simone by feeding her poisoned sweets) and stupid.
  • Lack of Empathy: They consider the lives of non-nobles expendable and are indifferent to the citizens of Paris starving to death because they can't eat.
  • Rich Bitch: Madame Catherine, Marie Antoinette, Count Crozier, Hans Kaunitz, Marquis de Moral...almost every noble here is portrayed as an unsympathetic tyrant. Though, Marie Antoinette redeems herself in the end.
    Madame Catherine

Madame Catherine

Voiced by: Noriko Ohara (Japanese)

A noblewoman who hates Marie Antoinette and has a history of feeling like she's always second place to her. Eventually, her hatred drives her to murder some civilians who happened to supply her with roses.
  • Domino Mask: At the ball, she wore a frilly black mask alongside roses across her auburn hair.
  • Freudian Excuse: Everything she does is driven from feeling inferior to Marie Antoinette. Unbeknownst to Catherine, Marie Antoinette's life wasn't as perfect as it seemed on the outside either.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Madame Catherine who is responsible for the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Rolland. When, Marie Antoinette showed up to a ball wearing a gown embroidered with black roses, Catherine was upset that she upstaged her, spending the night in tears. She then ordered her underlings to find the owners of the flower shop that supplied her with the roses, and kill them.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: For years, she has had an inferiority complex towards Marie Antoinette because she was Always Someone Better. She was even once a proposed bridal candidate Louis XVI, but he eventually married Marie.
  • Hysterical Woman: She was absolutely beside herself when Marie Antoinette swayed the ballgoers with her pretty gown, and took out her anger on the commoners that supplied her with it's flowers.
  • The Rival: To Marie Antoinette. Despite the fact that Antoinette barely gives her any thought, Catherine is intent on competing with her, thinks she isn't to be queen, and sheds tears of frustration at being bested by her.

    Hans Kaunitz

Voiced by: Masahi Amemori (Japanese)

A former friend of Duke de Forges. He is of minor Austrian nobility.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Hans initially offered to adopt Simone and care for her as his daughter, but revealed very quickly that his true intentions were to exploit her for wealth. Duke de Forges was furious when he found out and refused to let him lay a hand on her.
  • Greed: Why he wanted to adopt Simone, the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, and mold her into a means for him to earn money, despite already being a noble himself. When de Forges refused to let this happen, he killed him.
  • Hero Killer: Has had it out for Duke de Forges before the start of the story, eventually hunting him down and killing him because he spurred him from exploiting Simone.
  • Lack of Empathy: Hans' only concerns are himself, his power and elevating his status in the eyes of the nobility.
  • Named After Someone Famous: His name is a reference to the Austrian/Czech diplomat Wenzel Anton of Kaunitz.
  • Parental Substitute: Narrowly averted. He wanted to take guardianship of Simone, the daughter of Francis I, but de Forges saw through him and intervened. Hans has held a grudge for him ever since.
  • Secret-Keeper: Hans is one of the few people who knows that Simone is Francis I's daughter, given how he used to be friends with him and de Forges. He is also aware that de Forges was entrusted as her caretaker.

    Count Crozier

Voiced by: Shigeyuki Hisoi (Japanese)

The cruel, corrupt, haughty Lord of Chamberlain.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He meets his end when he's trapped in a burning mansion and the ceiling collapses overhead after fighting La Seine No Hoshi.
  • Evil Uncle: He is Michelle's vile, selfish uncle and uses her as a pawn to take down La Seine No Hoshi.
  • Lack of Empathy: He enforces heavy taxes on his citizens and secretly embezzles from them, manipulates his niece and later kills her, imprisons Marianne's father because he found out about his corruption and is generally, a sour-tempered, selfish, lavishness-obsessed Rich Bastard.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He knows that La Seine No Hoshi is a Kid Hero, but still attempts to poison her through Michelle. He also murders poor Michelle when she's outlived her usefulness.
