General tropes

  • Break Meter: All Evil units possess a white balance bar under their health meter, which represents how resistant they are to being staggered. A non-boss Evil unit emptied of its balance bar will be opened up to a weapon takedown, or execution if it's low on health as well, while bosses will be stunned. Additionally, a Survivor who became possessed also have their own balance bar.
  • Demonic Possession: An important game mechanic, as survivors with a high Fear level can be briefly possessed by the Kandarian Demon, turning against their allies, though the other teammates can beat some sense into them to snap them out of it, and Evil Dead 2 Ash has an active skill that instantly exorcises them. If said survivors also happen to be holding powerful weapons or supplies, they can sometimes prove more problematic to deal with than the actual Deadites themselves.
  • Flunky Boss: All of the boss units qualify. Despite their overall greater presence, boss units are only tough to deal with if they can keep pressure on the Survivors, and on their own can be rather easily defeated if the rest of the group gang up on them. This gave rise to the need for additional mooks to screen for them, and Evil Ash in particular is at his deadliest when he can have a pile of skeletons to reanimate and buff with his skill.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The initial trio follows this triangle:
    • The Warlord class is the straight-up Fighter. All of Henrietta's units are exceptionally tough and favor an in-your-face, Zerg Rush kind of approach, where they can grind Survivors to paste if backed into an unfortunate position. Henrietta herself is also the tankiest boss unit by a mile, being able to take much more punishment than Evil Ash and Eligos and dealing it back in turn, though she's also the most sluggish to move about.
    • The Puppeteer class is the Mage. Unlike Henrietta who favors brute force, or Evil Ash who has to set up his kill zone, Eligos prefers to rely on his gimmicks to hamper and damage Survivors. As a trade-off, his staying power is the lowest of the three if the other team can maneuver past his tricks and traps, but a good Eligos player usually has several layers of them to fall back on.
    • The Necromancer class is the Thief. While Evil Ash by his lonesome can technically qualify as a Fighter, he lacks Henrietta's innate beefiness and battlefield presence, but has his own tech to balance it out in the form of the skeletal flutist, and his ability to raise slain units to fight once more, meaning that he's the deepest in his element when he has a small horde of (preferrably Elite) mooks to screen for him.
  • Hero Killer: As a Kandarian Demon, you can get to slaughter many of the series' heroes.
  • Hero Unit: Each Demon class has its own boss unit that is capable of much carnage, but also has a significantly higher infernal energy cost to deploy and maintain.
  • Immune to Flinching: The boss-tier units like Henrietta and Evil Ash cannot be knocked back by melee attacks, but if their balance bar is depleted, they will be stunned for several seconds.
  • Impending Doom P.O.V.: In a homage how the Evil Force is represented in the live-action media, the Demon is a formless ethereal being that is unseen by the camera and sees things only from its own POV.
  • Jump Scare: The Demon has the Demonic Dash ability, which allows it to charge at a Survivor and scare them to generate Fear, while on their side they see a scary image associated with the Demon.
  • Large and in Charge: Boss units generally have a larger visual profile to them, to differentiate them from their common mooks. The most notable example of this trope is Henrietta, who despite being slightly shorter in height than her Elite Deadites, has a much more notable presence due to her sheer size and distinctly inhuman movement patterns.
  • Magikarp Power: An important gameplay aspect of the Kandarian Demon. Unlike Survivors, who start out relatively strong even without Pink F upgrades or high-tier weaponry, the Kandarian Demon needs time to gather large amounts of infernal energy to upgrade itself and its minions, as well as using its possession-based abilities. This makes a Kandarian Demon player quite underpowered when the match begins, and behooves them to play conservatively and drag the round out so they can stock up on energy and throw out boss-level units and hamper the Survivors' progress, and punishes them for playing recklessly during the early game.
  • Mook Maker: The Kandarian Demon's basic ability lets it place portals where minions will spawn from. These portals come in two flavors: automatic, which spawn units on their own without additional input, and trap, which will throw out a mook when a Survivor comes close enough to Jump Scare them.
  • Recognizable by Sound: While the Kandarian Demon is invisible, its loud growling sounds can be heard by nearby Survivors as a tell of its approximated position to them. If the growls are loud enough to drown out most of the action noises, then it's basically right on top of them.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Compared to Evil Ash, who was a powerful commanding figure of an entire Deadite army in Army of Darkness, and Baal, who is an extremely dangerous demon, Henrietta Knowby, Eligos, and the Witch were basically low-level fodder in their source materials, with the Pupetter being explicitly described as one of the weakest beings the Necronomicon can summon. In this game, they're all boss-tier units with their own regiments of mooks to throw at the Survivors in addition to a plethora of upgrades that turn them into actual menaces instead of just possessed flesh for Ash and his friends to destroy.
  • The Turret Master: Evil Ash and the Witch play like this, with each of them relying on strategically placing a buff totem in order to support themselves and their minions in combat with additional gimmicks. Played with in that the "turrets" aren't actually capable of offensive actions, and can be destroyed relatively easily by attentive Survivors if discovered, or if the Demon player isn't vigilant enough to defend them from damage.
  • Villain Override: The Demon is able to personally control any Basic or Elite unit for a short amount of time, which will also make that unit glow red as a warning for the Survivors to either get the hell away or gang up on them to quickly remove a significant threat. Eligos can possess a mook at any time, whereas Henrietta and Evil Ash have to be at least threat level 6 to do so as of the Castle Kandar update, to avoid abuse of their significantly stronger basic units.

     Warlord - Henrietta Knowby
Voiced by: Fred Tatasciore
Origin: Evil Dead 2
"Time to leave the fruit cellar!"
For tropes related to her main series appearances, see Evil Dead - The Cabin.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: For a given value of "attractive". The in-game version of Henrietta was actually adapted from Ash vs. Evil Dead rather than Evil Dead 2, and as such, her visual design is a lot less gross and unsettling compared to how she originally appeared in the film, even if she's still bloody and slimy from her transformation.
  • Bloody Horror: Her Hemophobia upgrade causes Survivors who are splattered with Deadite blood to steadily gain fear.
  • Fartillery: Henrietta's second ability causes her to let out a noxious fart cloud that damages and hinders Survivors caught in it.
  • Fan Disservice: Henrietta's frock is ripped wide open, exposing her bloated and horribly scarred gut, as well as breasts that curiously have no nipples.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: Henrietta's basic mooks can tear off their own arms to use as clubs to beat the Survivors with.
  • Ground Pound: This is Henrietta's main crowd-control ability, where she performs a belly flop that knocks back and damages Survivors near her.
  • Healing Factor: The Demonic Revival allows Henrietta and her minions to regenerate health at a moderate pace after several seconds of not taking additional damage.
  • Immune to Flinching: As a boss unit, Henrietta herself is this until her balance bar is depleted. Additionally, at max level, her Really Bad Influence aura also temporarily renders every single Evil unit inside its range to be completely immune to balance bar damage, which allows them to power through Survivors like a scythe through wheat and temporarily preventing takedowns from being performed.
  • Kevlard: Owing to her massive girth, Henrietta is the tankiest character available to the Kandarian Demon player. Her weight reduces her to a slow meandering pace, however.
  • Life Drain: Her Pain Parasite upgrade lets her minions heal themselves by damaging Survivors.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Or Granny will crush you to death with her Granny Hug.
  • Overdrawn at the Blood Bank: Henrietta's Deadite mooks can really bleed. Even the weakest attacks can cause a Deadite to bleed profusely and spray blood everywhere, and going ham on a small mob of them will quickly blot out your vision due to the sheer amount of splattering it causes. This actually synergizes with Henrietta's blood-related perks, since Deadite units cannot die from blood loss, and especially punishes the Warrior class due to their melee focus and frontliner positioning, which leaves them especially vulnerable to being covered.
  • Power Floats: Henrietta doesn't actually walk on her feet, and instead floats lazily across the map with the occasional burst of speed.
  • Status Buff: Henrietta's special ability allows her to generate an aura that empowers Deadites around her.
  • Zombie Puke Attack: Her basic Deadites can puke on the Survivors to deal damage and impede their movement. Certain upgrades can be unlocked to impart other kinds of debuff as well.
     Puppeteer - Eligos
Voiced by: Kellen Goff
Origin: Ash vs. Evil Dead
"All their minds are mine!"
For tropes related to his main series appearances, see Evil Dead - The Evil Dead.
  • Action Bomb: All of his basic mooks will explode and deal shock damage to nearby Survivors when slain, unless finished off with a takedown move. They can also detonate on command if possessed.
  • Crosshair Aware: One can tell where he's aiming his Thunderstruck by looking for a patch of gray, almost mist-like aura on the ground, and dodge out of it.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Eligos can telekinetically hurl small boulders at the Survivors to damage and stagger them.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: His Demi-Eligos units can create a low-health copy of themselves with identical attacks.
  • Fragile Speedster: Compared to Henrietta and Evil Ash, Eligos isn't able to tank much damage, so he constantly has to be on the move to avoid getting turned into minced meat.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: Eligos' Berserkers can throw their own heads like grenades that will do considerable damage at the cost of the minions who performed the attack also dying.
  • King Mook: He's basically a Demi-Eligos, but blue and slightly larger, making him the boss unit that resembles his minions the most.
  • Sanity Slippage: His bread and butter. Eligos specializes in causing the Survivors' fear meter to skyrocket in tandem with the Kandarian Demon's natural Demonic Possession powers.
  • Shock and Awe: Shock damage is his primary means of attacking the Survivors. His basic mooks will explode in a shocking blast when killed via normal means, and Eligos and his Demi-Eligos elite units can call down lightning to zap Survivors in the blast radius. The damage radius upgrade for the Thunderstruck ability is literally named as this.
  • Skill Gate Characters: Compared to the likes of Henrietta, who needs to be reasonably well-upgraded, and Evil Ash, who relies on setting the battlefield up to do most of his damage, Eligos is the easiest to just pick up and play. And for the first couple of matches for a new player, he's quite a powerhouse who can ride the Possession train with ease due to his increased Fear generation and plethora of ways to do tons of area-of-effect damage that shreds Survivor groups. However, his pressuring capabilities fall off sharply when coming up against more experienced Survivors, who can manage their Fear better, know how to negate his mooks' explosions with takedowns, and dodge out of his Thunderstruck, Eligos becomes a pushover instead due to how limited his damage potential is. His units' lackluster survivability and low damage without their on-death explosions also leave a lot to be desired. As such, it's significantly rarer to be matched up with a high-level Puppeteer in online play than the other two, and even rarer still to be pitted against one who can actually demolish groups instead of the other way around.
  • The Sneaky Guy: Eligos is invisible while moving and only shows up to the Survivors right when he's about to attack, creating the impression that he's Teleport Spamming like he did in the series.
     Necromancer - Evil Ash
Voiced by: Bruce Campbell
Origin: Army of Darkness
"Slice that gizzard open!"
For tropes related to his main series appearances, see Evil Dead - The Evil Dead.
  • Anti-Regeneration: With the Irreparable Damage upgrade, Survivors hit by Evil Ash will be unable to heal themselves for a few moments, where passive heals from teammates and abilities will not apply to the afflicted player, and they will not be able to use their own Shemp's Colas. Getting wailed on by him will pretty much render all methods of healing inapplicable to you for the entire combo.
  • Dem Bones: The Necromancer units consist of various skeletons led by Evil Ash.
  • Evil Counterpart: Quite literally to the Survivor Ashes.
  • Final Boss: Of Lord Arthur's mission Homecoming King.
  • Flunky Boss: Although he can be a pretty effective frontline unit, Evil Ash works best when he's entrenched behind a wall of mooks that he can reanimate and buff with the skeletal flutist to overwhelm the Survivors with. It would be a cold day in hell if a lone Necromancer ever tries going up against a whole group without his entourage, since even with Irreparable Damage, he can only withstand so much punishment before going down and setting the Demon back a lot of infernal energy.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Evil Ash's eyes will glow red when he uses his active skill, and in his victory animation.
  • Javelin Thrower: His Elite units can throw their spears, but once that's done, they will be left with only their wooden bucklers for combat.
  • Life Drain: Evil Ash can perform a telekinetic Neck Lift on a Survivor and siphon some of their life force to heal himself.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: His skeleton units are often seen bearing shields to protect themselves, though they can still be killed relatively easily all things considered. If his Elite units are depleted of their balance bar, they will lose their bucklers as well.
  • Magic Music: The skeletal flautist can buff nearby units and Evil Ash with his flute.
  • The Minion Master: Evil Ash's abilities allow him to summon skeletons and create an aura around himself where all skeletons killed within it are instantly revived and, with the right skills, buffed.
  • Necromancer: Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Evil Ash's active ability enables him to raise units that were slain around him, and with specific upgrades make them stronger than they once were.
  • Support Party Member: The skeletal flautist's only purpose is to stand in one spot and provide buffs to Evil Ash's entire army with his Magic Music, and the Survivors may try to take him out first to deny his utility. To this end, he's deliberately designed to be fragile as napkin paper and incapable of defending himself, on top of his constantly glowing red aura and obvious directional audio which can reveal him to the Survivors.
  • Zerg Rush: The Necromancer player with the right upgrades can spawn a ludicrous number of skeletons at once, and swarming the Survivors with them can be a valid tactic.
     Plaguebringer - The Witch
Voiced by:
Origin: Army of Darkness
"'Tis time to spread a bit of disease!"

  • Ascended Extra: Unlike the release trio, the Witch was an incredibly minor character in the source material, appearing and being killed in one scene that barely lasted three minutes.
  • Composite Character: The Witch is a blend of Warlord and Necromancer gameplay-wise, where her core kit revolves around placing a buff totem-type unit and has to actively defend it to benefit from the various combat buffs it provides.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: If a Survivor is hit by her plague potions, they will take more damage to health and shield for a few seconds.
  • Damage Over Time: The other gimmick of the Plaguebringer is Blight, a special status effect that acts as a Bleed and is inflicted by most of her unit attacks and abilities.
  • Dem Bones: Her basic units are Prisoner Skeletons, Henry the Red's men that died in the dungeons of Castle Kandar.
  • Dual Wielding: Prisoner Skeletons are armed with two swords that they use to slice their enemies.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The Witch's elite unit is the Pit Deadite, which officially made its game debut in Lord Arthur's singleplayer mission.
  • Glass Cannon: Her basic skeleton units are as fragile as any other trash mob, but they make up for this frailty by doing a lot of damage with their twin swords that they really like to spin around with. Getting caught by a spin attack in a bad spot can end up wrecking your health and shield bars way worse than the other three kinds of mob abilities.
  • Ground Wave: Her attacks are powerful waves she sends out by swinging her arms. The Pit Deadite can also project directional shockwaves by stomping the ground.
  • Magic Cauldron: Her kit revolves around maintaining one, which creates a buff aura that makes her units hit harder, take less damage, and cost less Infernal Energy to possess. Survivors who got within this radius also receive less healing from all sources.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Her Primal Scream ability can temporarily stun a Survivor on top of doing damage to them.
  • Mechanically Unusual Fighter: The Plaguebringer's units don't have cooldowns for their attacks, at a cost of nearly everything they do expending large amounts of Infernal Energy.
  • Power Floats: Much like Henrietta, the Witch hovers above the ground instead of walking.
  • Spin Attack: Her Prisoner Skeletons are able to spin their torso around to shred survivors around them.
  • Turns Red: If the Witch is killed, or if the Demon player runs out of Infernal Energy while controlling her, she will rise again after a few moments with immunity to balance bar damage and all ability costs removed, but also turning her into a Glass Cannon in the process.

     Schemer - Baal
Voiced by: Piotr Michael
Origin: Ash vs. Evil Dead
"'"
For tropes related to his main series appearances, see Evil Dead - The Evil Dead.

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Baal's weapon is his right index talon that is sharp enough to cut skin from flesh with ease.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Whereas his counterpart in the series is effectively immortal unless banished by the Necronomicon or damaged by his own powers, and in the former case could simply Body Surf into a nearby mortal as he did with Pablo at the midpoint of season two, the playable Baal is as physically vulnerable to gunfire and melee attacks as his minions, cannot jump to a host to save himself, and can be driven off after taking enough damage. Additionally, his talons have also lost most of their lethality in the name of gameplay balancing, as they can no longer flay his victims instantly and only act as conventional claws to slash them with.
  • Badass Fingersnap: His Fatal Snap ability has him snap his fingers and unleash a damaging shockwave around himself.
  • Bloody Murder: His Skinned Proselyte units are able to manipulate their blood to create sharp spikes or tendrils in order to damage Survivors.
  • The Chessmaster: He's a very strategic Demon that is able to manipulate everyone and everything in his favor. Fittingly, his unique icon is a knight chess piece.
  • Flaying Alive: Baal's units are skinned humans who were used by him to disguise himself.
  • Master of Illusion: A lot of his abilities are made to make the Survivors feel unsettled at all times, like his unique possession trait is to make every other Survivor appear as his victim.
  • Mind Rape: Baal's grab ability, Embrace the Darkness, has him flood his victim's mind with horrifying images before slicing them with his claw.
  • Trap Master: A large part of his kit is dedicated to make traps he sets up deadlier.
