Vanguards

    Chavez

Ethan Chavez, Rugged Veteran

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/db5539d5068abb33298b8f211a1b8eb8.png
A true legend of the spy world, Chavez uses his strength and his kind heart to fight the good fight. He's supposed to be retired now, but he's back for one last mission... or so he says.

Weapons: Sentinelnote , Vigilantenote , Dukenote
Expertise: Hard Boilednote , Unshakeable Fortressnote , Return to Sendernote
Passive: Tough Lucknote , Tough as Nailsnote , Endurance Trainingnote

  • Blaxploitation: He is a homage to the heroes of this genre.
  • Expy: His turtleneck and leather jacket combo, revolver, and hairstyle all bring to mind John Shaft.
    • Additionally, many comparisons have been made between him and Colt Vahn, due to their similar voice acting, dress sense, mannerisms, and tendency for wise-cracking. The similar setting and premises of the two games certainly help with these observations.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep"
  • One Last Job: Insists that whatever mission you send him on will be his last one.
  • The Power of Love: Can become invincible just by looking at a locket from his two daughters, Estelle and Tiara.

    Squire

Rupert Reid, Adaptable Recruit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/23ed3cd8bce9b8bacedeec3fd5243609_1.png
As Deceive Inc's youngest agent, Squire constantly feels the weight of his mentor's legacy on his shoulders. However, don't let his impostor syndrome fool you. He's a top of the line operative, capable of the best.

Weapons: Lancenote , Tridentnote , Javelinnote
Expertise: Eyes on the Prizenote , Under Pressurenote , Danger Sensenote
Passive: Always Readynote , Sixth Sensenote , Aegis Covernote

  • Apologetic Attacker: Apologizes profusely after taking down any of his Rivals.
  • Butt-Monkey: At least in promotional material. Whenever an agent is showing off their ability, Squire tends to be on the receiving end.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Squire has barely any confidence in his own abilities and training, in spite of placing extremely high during testing and personal tutelage under Knight, always expressing surprise of some sort when he accomplishes anything in-game. This doesn't change no matter how many successful missions he runs.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Is noticeably the shortest of all the agents.
  • Skill Gate Characters: Probably the most obvious example out of the three starting characters. Good all-rounder weapon, simple Expertise abilities that emphasise improving your situational awareness, and a trio of Passive abilities that are all designed to help protect Squire if he is ambushed. Squire can be used well by experienced players, but the aforementioned assets are more to help new players ease their way into the game and can be outperformed by the other agents' specialized Expertise skills and weaponry (e.g. Ace outranging Squire with her rifles and tracking him with her Expertise skills).
  • Tuxedo and Martini: As a British agent with a pistol and a nice suit, he is this game's James Bond homage. He plays with the expectations a bit by also being young and inexperienced, with the implication that his mentor is much closer to the kind of agent that James Bond is.

Trackers

    Ace

Tamar Zaken, Relentless Huntress

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/594f8193fa3fbc6ba8f2ddef4a3079dd.png
A sharp-eyed mercenary, Ace's unique skills have made her one of Deceive Inc's pillars. She tracks her rivals without fail. Believe us, once you figure out you are her target, it's already too late.

Weapons: Queen of Diamondnote , Jack of Diamondnote , King of Diamondnote
Expertise: Queen's Gazenote , Stacked Oddsnote , Big Blindnote
Passive: Big Blindnote , Crippling Shotnote , Cover Flushnote

  • Cold Sniper: Her general character archetype. Her gameplay style rewards marking other agents and picking them off from far away.
  • Charged Attack: Her passives all reward staying scoped for a moment before shooting your target, with the options for extra damage, slowed movement speed, or the inability to reequip a disguise for a duration.
  • Fluorescent Footprints: Ace’s first expertise, “Queen’s Gaze”, causes her rival to be traced and leave a trail for her to follow.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Her codename, abilities, and weapons are almost all named after playing cards or poker terms in some way.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite dressing in a practical manner, Ace still takes the time to paint her nails and wear at least one necklace.

    Cavalière

Florence Jacques, Unflinching Investigator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/550fc480e8be95bfd26537f62d99c6ce.png
Brash detective Cavalière leaves no stone unturned... And if her deduction skills are not enough to keep you in check, her serious combat abilities learned during her globe-trotting days will do the talking.

Weapons: Dragoonsnote , Hydrasnote , Wyvernsnote
Expertise: Investigationnote , It's a Setupnote , Redemptionnote
Passive: Tiger's Leapnote , Maximum Velocitynote , Baleful Blownote

  • Charged Attack: Her passives allows her to charge up her melee attack to deal bonus damage, kicking her opponents instead of just karate chopping them, with each passive giving a different effect: Tiger's Leap lunges to close gaps easier, Maximum Velocity reloads her guns if it lands, and Baleful Blow slows the opponent on hit.
  • Guns Akimbo: Her choice of weapon.
  • Kick Chick: Her passives each grant her powerful kicks.
  • Sherlock Scan: Two of her Expertise abilities let her investigate her surroundings to track rivals. "Investigation" lets her scan any interactable object and reveals the location of the last rival agent to have interacted with it, while "Redemption" does the same with KO'd characters.
  • Unorthodox Reload: Reloads her dual pistols with Gun Twirling.

    Sasori

Keiji Takase, Venomous Assassin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3485.png
“Ex-henchman for hire, Sasori has tangled with death more times than anyone could count. Armed with his noxious arsenal and a sincere wish to make amends, Sasori comes back from retirement to cut through the competition with a renewed sense of quietude”

Weapons:Ame & Kagenote ,Hyō & Haneinote ,Yuki & Hikarinote
Expertise:Coated Weaponrynote ,Poison Vialsnote ,Noxious Gasnote
Passive:Poison Sensenote ,Give And Takenote ,Down With the Sicknessnote

  • Animal Theme Naming: His codename is Japanese for scorpion, fitting his poisonous skill set.
  • Deadly Gas: Sasori’s second and third expertise enable him to throw vials and drop bombs filled with the stuff.
  • Former Friends Photo: More like ‘former employment photo’. Sasori was teased through one of these.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Previously one of Han’s henchman, he turned a new leaf and took his former boss’s arm with him.
  • Katanas Are Better: While all of his weapons include blades, his second weapon is this trope entirely.
  • Ninja Run: He runs like this during operations. Sasori has the unique skill of being able to use his throwable weapons while sprinting, further emphasizing his speed compared to the other agents.
  • Poisoned Weapons: Sasori’s first expertise allow his weapons to become this trope temporarily.
  • Secondary Fire: At the push of a button, he can utilise his blade for close combat.
  • Tranquil Fury: Although he is calm during gameplay, he still has a grudge against fellow agent (and former boss) Hans. Even going so far as to use Hans’ locker as target practice.

Scoundrels

    Madame Xiu

Madame Xiu, Enigmatic Dame

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/530ab11a20b3d35dbd594fd63426c43a.png
There are a lot of rumors circulating about Madame Xiu, her past, and her abilities. Deceive Inc. can't confirm any of them without breaching their contract with her, which is a dangerous game to play with such a cutthroat and enigmatic lady.

Weapons: Zhulongnote , Longshennote , Xuanwunote
Expertise: Cobra's Deceitnote , Serpent's Bluffnote , Python's Rusenote
Passive: Viper's Knowledgenote , Krait's Instinctnote , Mamba's Hunchnote

  • Animal Theme Naming: Her Expertise and Passives are all named after varieties of snakes.
  • Automatic Crossbows: Her primary weapon, a nod to China having invented the Zhūgě nǔ repeating crossbow around the 4th century BC.
  • Badass Fingersnap: When teleporting with any of her Expertise abilities, she does a loud echoing fingersnap.
  • Body Surf: Her Expertise abilities all revolve around the ability to shift from one person to another.
  • Combat Stilettos: Has no problem running and jumping in these alongside the rest of the agents.
  • Cultured Badass: When she's not trading information or doing spy work, she's an art curator.
  • Dragon Lady: Certainly gives off this impression with her icy, mysterious demeanor.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: She melees by simply flicking her middle finger at enemies.
  • Statuesque Stunner: The tallest playable character in the initial roster.

    Larcin

Francois Claudet, Gentleman Thief

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/020425d79c23061ba43f456983fd001d.png
Gentleman thief and professional borrower, Larcin has made quite a name for himself with his peculiar savoir faire and showmanship. His charms are such that you won't even be mad when noticing previous items missing from your pockets.

Weapons: Silencenote , Cadencenote , Violencenote
Expertise: Adieunote , Grande Finalenote , Tour du Mondenote
Passive: Merci Beaucoup!note , Souffre-douleurnote , Pickpocketnote

  • Expy: His criminal alias, choice of weapon (small concealable pistol), and emphasis on thievery from criminals/secret organizations and a subsequent daring escape evokes Lupin III.
  • Gentleman Thief: His title and character archetype. His Expertise ability involves becoming temporarily invisible for getaways or repositioning during combat, and his Passives gives him unique ways of stealing items from other rivals without needing to defeat them. He is also the only Agent that can outright steal the Package while in disguise with the right Passive.
  • Hit-and-Run Tactics: His skillset lends itself to this, allowing him to lift valuables from his enemies without killing them and turn invisible for an easy escape.
  • Throwing Your Gun at the Enemy: Combined with Throw-Away Guns: His reload has him throw his pistol forwards before pulling out a new one, which can damage whoever you were aiming at. His 'Violence' weapon is equipped with a blade and will do extra damage.
  • Video Game Stealing: The 'Pickpocket' Passive lets him steal the highest-value item a Rival holds while in cover without revealing himself or the target. The most important is naturally the Package; a Larcin player can casually walk up to another player extracting and just take it from their hands.

    Red

Selena Ivanenko, Treacherous Seductress

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/25ba7000cf3ae7293bdd09428231754d.png
''Sultry, manipulative and hungry for power, Red is always on the lookout for the next big score. Planning every move in advance, Red isn't afraid to use her charms to obtain what she wants...And she always gets what she wants.

Weapons: Heartbreakernote , Jack of Heartnote , Lovebitenote
Expertise: Succubus' Kissnote , Sweet Embracenote , Love Bombnote
Passive: Makeovernote , View to a Killnote , Naughty Listnote

  • Charm Person: Her signature abilities revolve around applying a 'Charmed' status effect to opponents, which forces them into cover and slows them down. While in this state, firing your weapon will give you extra vulnerability to damage, while taking damage in-turn will remove the effect.
  • Combat Stilettos
  • Femme Fatale Spy: Seduces enemy spies, wears a luxurious and revealing outfit, has a shotgun that shoots in a heart pattern... It doesn't get much more Femme Fatale than this.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple
  • Jerkass: Nearly everything she says to her teammates when pinging something is some kind of insult.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Having a large jewel on her neck and a heavy fur coat won’t stop her from taking the package.
  • I'm Not Here to Make Friends: Says this verbatim, and it's made more apparent by her dialogue towards teammates.
  • Not So Above It All: There are hints that her seductress traits are very much a front that she puts on for her job, and that she isn't particularly graceful in her personal life. Her victory animation sees her drinking coffee with a distinctly unglamorous and stressed expression.
  • Stealth Pun: Her "Love Bomb" ability doubles as a sneaky reference to love bombing, a manipulation tactic in which an individual is deliberately showered with praise and attention as a way of drawing them into a group, a term which fits Red's manipulative traits well.

Disruptors

    Hans

Hans Moritz, Imposing Provocateur

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1aeefc052526c4a114c055290c1416dc.png
Once a head honcho of a super criminal empire, Hans used to have it all. Now forced to serve his sentence as a Deceive Inc. agent, he swears he'll regain back his former power and glory.

Weapons: The Hooknote , The Jabnote , The Uppercutnote
Expertise: Incapacitator Orbnote , Static Cagenote , Shock Raynote
Passive: Dreadful Presencenote , Fear Projectionnote , Energy Syphonnote

  • Arm Cannon: His weapon: a mechanical hand that can fold away to reveal a gun.
  • Artificial Limbs: One of his arms is a prosthetic that doubles as a gun.
  • Boxing Battler: Hans was a former professional boxer; his weapons are all named after punches, and his melee attacks are also based on the sport.
  • Coat Cape: He wears his coat like this. Doesn’t even take it off when changing styles.
  • Diabolical Mastermind: He was this prior to being forced to join Deceive Inc.. He fully intends to become a free villain again when the opportunity arises.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Being a former supervillain laid low by Deceive Inc., Hans resents his new employer's power over him and is bitterly disdainful to his coworkers. He alternates between proudly boasting of his superiority and regretfully fuming over his circumstances.
  • Trading Bars for Stripes: Became a secret agent as his punishment for his previous life of crime; one of his lines for winning a round indicates that he knocks five years off his sentence for completing a mission.

    Yu-Mi

Yu-Mi Kwon, Raucous Gadgeteer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/daccaa8d1932285757e0c7925eeca841.png
Brilliant and happy-go-lucky, Yu-Mi's enthusiasm to be a part of Deceive Inc. is only matched with her ability to create and break things around her. Some may say she's a stubborn brat, but her tactical capabilities and her inventiveness tend to make her rivals eat their words.

Weapons: Tactical Slingshotnote , Experimental Splitshotnote , Heavy Longshotnote
Expertise: EMP Blastnote , Medi-Fieldnote , EMP Flocknote
Passive: Quick Fixnote , Energy Catalystnote , Booby Trapsnote

  • Brats with Slingshots: One of the cast's youngest characters, and armed with a slingshot as her weapon.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Yu-Mi resents everyone's expectations that she'll grow up to be an inventor like her mother, when what she really wants to do is destroy things. Even so, she's still very good with technology.
  • Genki Girl: The most enthusiastic and fun-loving of all the Agents.
  • Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Zig-zagged. Her mother was an inventor, but Yu-Mi prefers to use her technological talents for destruction and wreaking havoc rather than creating things. That being said, she's still very good at making things... which she usually uses to break other things.
  • Skip of Innocence: Yu-Mi prefers to skip around everywhere, although she’s anything BUT innocent.
  • Trick Arrow: Her Expertise abilities all involve firing special ammo from her slingshot, with a choice of EMP Blast (creates a field that slows Rivals, drains cover and destroys gadgets), Medi-Field (heals any Agent within its area of effect), or EMP Flock (fires up to three mini-EMP pellets, all of which create small EMP fields that stick to surfaces).

    Octo

UNKNOWN, Boisterous Hacker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3523.png
Hacking his way through Deceive inc.'s hiring system, Octo's fortune is only matched by his boldness. Always going all in for risky plays, the boisterous hacker knows how to turn Lady Luck's frown upside down. And when he gets dealt a bad hand, Octo makes sure his rivals fold.

Weapons: Pulponote , Nautilonote , Calamarinote
Expertise: Cashing Outnote , On the Housenote , Make ‘em Fold note
Passive: Edging Your Betsnote , Big Investmentnote , Jackpotnote

  • Agent Peacock: Despite his codename, he is the most flamboyant and prideful agent by far.
  • Animal Theme Naming: Octo’s codename and weapons refer to the octopus. His run is also quite octopus-like.
  • Cast from Money: Not actual money per se, but his weapons use intel when he’s aiming down sight. Without intel, he's reduced to his gun's normal bullets.
  • The Cracker: Before he was revealed, Octo was able to hack into Deceive Inc’s recruiting systems to get hired, and he’s not afraid to show off. His expertises also revolve around instantly gathering and stealing intel from computers and rivals alike.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Madame Xiu, as both a fellow information broker and ‘rival’.
  • The Gambler: Octo’s expertises and passives refer to cards and gambling, says a few lines related to this trope, and wants to head to the casino himself once he wins.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Pretty much acts like this if he isn’t the one who gets the package.

VIPs

    Jati Bin Teh
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3290.png
The VIP of Operation: Diamond Spire. An athlete, stock broker, tv actor, recording artist, influencer, and multi-trillionaire who is concocting a plan to develop a secret ingredient that would make his upcoming sports drink extra-addictive.
  • Anachronism Stew: His Tech Bro influencer background stands out in a game that otherwise skews heavily towards the aesthetics and culture of the 1970's.
  • Fiction 500: Being a multi-trillionaire would make him by far richer than anyone who has ever lived.
  • Renaissance Man: Just look at his list of careers...
  • Insistent Terminology: You can call him an entrepeneur, but he prefers "dreampeneur".
  • It's All About Me: Jati is such an Attention Whore that all of his brands and establishments allude to him in some way. There was even an event called ‘Jatimania’ that’s all about him!

    Luana Cacilias Pèrez
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3289_38.png
The VIP of Operation: Fragrant Shore. An active member in both politics and the dark market, she is developing a mind-controlling perfume within a laboratory hidden within the capitol of the Caribbean port town of San Flores to further spread her influence.
  • Corrupt Politician: Luana is an elected official in San Flores, and is perceived as someone to fear among elite circles. She even has her latest perfume development inside the Capitol instead of a warehouse.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Wears a sunscreen bottle necklace on her neck. San Flores is quite sunny after all!
  • Lady in a Power Suit: An orange one, suiting her VIP status.
  • Makeup Weapon: She’s developing a brainwashing perfume for her own nefarious uses.
  • Permanent Elected Official: She’s got a few bronze statues placed around San Flores to prove it too.

    Sebastian Garcia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3291_8.png
The VIP of Operation: Hard Sell. An information broker who resides in an expansive villa off the coast of Spain. He is currently holding an auction to sell off the Bull's Eye, a statue hosting a hard drive containing a swathe of government secrets.
  • Diabolical Mastermind: He skews the closest towards being a traditional Spy Fiction supervillain among the VIPs, with both his scheme and the setting of his heist. Passing an auction for concealed government secrets for an art auction, and taking place in his villa.
  • Knowledge Broker: His main criminal enterprise is the acquisition, trading and sale of information.
  • Properly Paranoid: Formerly known as secret agent Antonio Ricci, Garcia has since been hiding in plain sight, constantly looking over his shoulder for any signs of spy activity. His worst fears come true during his operation, where up to eight spies infiltrate his manor.
  • Right-Hand Cat: He has one of these, confirmed by his portraits. As of this writing, the name of the cat is currently [CLASSIFIED].

    The Evensen Twins
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3292.png
Rebekka "Starling" Evensen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3293_5.png
Nilfrid "Angelfish" Evensen
The two VIPs of Operation: Silver Reef. A pair of fashion designers that specialize in weaponized clothing, preparing to reveal a new prototype pendant at a fashion show in the Frozen Coral underwater hotel.

    Hazen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3295.png
The VIP of Operation: Sound Eclipse. A true artist in every sense of the word, Hazen plans to end the age of technology and begin a new age of creativity, by sending an EMP signal for their newest concert. From space.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: They are disappointed with humanity’s reliance on technology and the utter disrespect of the arts, so they plan to end it.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Before they were officially released, Hazen is featured on the front cover of newspapers all over the world.
  • The Rock Star: Hazen made a name for themselves as a talented musician and writer. They dress in the style of one too.
  • Sonic Stunner: As an evil opera singer, Hazen mastered a vocal cord that, if sung, would activate an experimental sound system, disabling all technology on Earth.

Other Characters

    IRIS
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_3552_8.png
Inside the Deceive Inc. Watch
Short for Intergrated Recon and Intelligence System, IRIS serves as the main system that helps run Deceive Inc., as well as assisting its agents with operations within the standard issue watch.
  • Hollywood Hacking: IRIS can hack into the vaults if agents take too long to hack the vault terminals in-game. They were also a victim of this trope on an undisclosed date at 14:47, causing IRIS to have an identity crisis.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Right before every operation, IRIS’s Sarcasm Module is fully installed into the agent’s watch, either encouraging or berating the agents throughout each match.
  • Voice of the Legion: It is assumed that IRIS isn’t just one AI, but is a whole collective of artificial intelligences within one system. Revealed through their dialogue.
    Welcome Agent. We are IRIS.

    Knight
Squire's mentor, and Ace and Chavez's former teammate. Once one of the greatest spies in the world, a mission gone wrong led to their mysterious disappearance...
  • The Ace: If what little we know about them is any indication, they actually fit this better than Ace herself.
  • Ambiguous Gender: They/them pronouns are used for Knight, but it's unclear whether they're meant to actually be non-binary or if this is just a way to conceal their identity.
  • Posthumous Character: A more ambiguous case. They were a top spy until their last mission, where they disappeared under currently unknown circumstances. Regardless of their ultimate fate, their absence is keenly felt by Agents Ace and Chavez—who were their teammates during that fateful mission—and Agent Squire, their former apprentice and successor...not to mention the implications that their final failed mission was the Inciting Incident for Deceive Inc.'s existence in the first place.
  • Tuxedo and Martini: Little is known about them, but it's implied they were much closer to this trope than Squire is.
  • Uncertain Doom: As of this writing, their fate is unknown.
