Characters introduced in Shonen Gekiha Dan

    Core Soldiers

Dan Bashin

Voiced by: Fuyuka Oura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dan2_8701.gif

A hot-blooded and bluntly straightforward red card battler. During a championship, he was taken into the world of Grand Lolo by Yuuki and Kajitsu Momose, where uhe was known as the red soldier, a bearer of the core’s light. He befriends Zungurii, a native child whose village was under attack, and devotes himself to saving Grand Rolo for the sake of Zungurii and the rest of the Otherworlders.

In the second season, Dan travels to the future in order to battle again, and protect the humans from mazoku, and the planet's eventual reset. Now using a deck of all colors, he becomes a Brave user. In the end, he makes a Heroic Sacrifice by becoming the trigger to summon the gods and prevent the Earth's reset. His fate is left in question.

  • All-Loving Hero: He's willing to give everyone a chance. He'll jump to save anyone, even if he hardly knows them or they're an enemy. He even tried to take in Mother Core, which his body couldn't physically handle. And his friends adore him.
  • The Determinator: During Brave in particular. Even with a doomed fate, he is going to carry out his mission until the end.
  • Empty Shell: He temporarily becomes this after losing to Otherworld King
  • Expy: To Toppa Bashin. Both are red-using redheads, and chosen ones who are magnetic heroes. Even their last name is the same.
    • Averted in Brave, as Dan has matured and his personality becomes much more distinct.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He attempts this at the end of Gekiha Dan, by taking in Mother Core, but he ends up okay. At the end of Brave, he makes a true one by becoming the trigger for the 12 Zodiac X-Rares.
    • Also, in the manga version he uses Mother Core to bring Kajitsu back to life, but has to become the new Otherworld King as a result.
  • Hot-Blooded: Everyone is, but him especially.
  • Kid Hero: He's only 12 during the time of Gekiha Dan.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Whenever he gets a new red dragon into play.
  • Magnetic Hero: The way people become attached to him even gets discussed in the series.
  • Meaningful Name: He has the same last name as the first series’ protagonist.
  • Official Couple: In Brave, with Mai. Unfortunately, it does not last long.
  • Parental Substitute: He basically takes care of En and Fant as a father
  • Playing with Fire: He uses red, which has many fire-themed cards.
  • Power Gives You Wings: His second Battle Form allows him to sprout wings temporarily
  • Red Is Heroic: He's the red core soldier, and he uses red too.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Curry. Especially the curry Zungurii makes.

Clackey Ray

Voiced by: Daisuke Ono
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clackey2_3940.gif

A yellow card battler (and the yellow soldier) known as “The Noble Youth of Light.” He loves to be around girls (be they living or the spirits in his deck), and devotes himself to protecting the ladies of Grand Rolo. At first, he dislikes Dan, but the two become very close friends, learning a lot from the other’s different battle style.

In the second season, he's the captain of The Beautiful Sophia. He doesn’t battle as much anymore, leaving that task to Dan. When he does, however, he now uses red cards as well as his usual yellow. In the end, he chooses to stay in the future, to protect it in Dan's place, and to be with Angers.

  • Bishie Sparkle: He actually gets these.
  • Chick Magnet: Even he had more girls than he could probably handle in the Mimi village.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: He loves to pick up girls, but he will make sure to treat them right
  • Gratuitous English: He uses this a lot.
  • Light Is Good: He uses yellow, and his deck focuses on angels and light. Naturally, he’s one of the heroes.
  • Inconsistent Spelling- With numerous different -official- spellings, why couldn't he just have a normal Japanese name like the rest of the core soldiers? The official site spells his name as Clackey, an older blog which was written by the card game’s designer on another official site spelled his name as Krakki. And a separate blog by his seiyuu spelled it as Cracky.
  • Official Couple: In Brave, with Angers. Saga Brave reveals that they have two children together.
  • Pretty Boy: At least in his case, he's easily identifiable as male. Still, it's pretty clear the creators were going for this angle, given his popularity with girls in-universe.
  • Serial Romeo: Most of his girls (ie: Sophia, Mira, Seiru) don't last for long.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Zolder and Flora. He wants them to get together after realizing that they’re Yuuki and Kajitsu reincarnated.

Mai Viole/Shinomiya

Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mai2_7375.gif

A purple card battler (and the purple soldier), and well known net idol for her blog, “Purple Talk.” She tends to act rather spoiled, being pampered by both Zungurii and her butler, Serge. When serious, however, she puts others before her, and is described as “scary.” She develops feelings toward Dan over time.

In the second season, Mai has changed very much. She’s quit her blog, started using her real last name, grown her hair long, and no longer battles. Though she begins the series as a member of the Sophia crew, she temporarily leaves to join Barone in fighting for the mazoku.

  • Action Girl: In the first season. She loves to battle, gets to do so on multiple occasions, and is good at it too.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She uses purple, which focuses on demons and the occult.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Three times. At the start of Brave, after joining with the mazoku, and finally, at the end of Brave after Dan's Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Expy: To Suiren. Aside from aesthetic similarities, they're both idols, and both kind of scary purple-using action girls.
  • Faux Action Girl: In the second season, for most of the time anyway. Much as they mention how she's a bearer of core's light and card battles, you won't get to see her doing it for a good while, anyway.
  • Official Couple: In Brave, with Dan. Unfortunately, it does not last long.
  • Signature Hair Decs: She wears clips in her hair. Her battle form even has horns, because she wanted it to look cuter.
  • Tsundere: Type B, towards Dan. Mainly only in the first season, as she becomes much more comfortable with her feelings for him.

Hideto Suzuri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suzuri2_3767.gif

A blue card battler (and the blue soldier), and dedicated card collector. He loves X-rares in particular, and will do whatever it takes to add more to his collection. He’s rather unsociable, and is disinterested in being the blue soldier. He later becomes a temporary king of the blue world, and is reluctant to leave that position, both because it’s a huge contrast to how he used to be bullied in the real world, and because he feels too different from the other core soldiers, as he doesn’t fight for anyone but himself.

In the second season, he doesn't appear at first, as he was traveling the world on his own. He later realizes his role, and comes to the future to help out.

  • Aloof Ally: He'll help the others, but isn't interested in joining them. Dan and Yuuki get him to change his mind, eventually.
  • Hat of Authority: Wears an extravagant hat during his time as king of the blue world.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": With X-rare cards.
  • Last-Name Basis: Notable, because the rest of the core soldiers usually go by their first names.
  • Otaku: A card collector one
  • Tsundere: Male example, and a non-romantic one. In an early episode, when Dan offers him a hand to shake, he responds by promptly stomping on his foot, and then apologizes. His difficulty making friends stems from his troubled past.

Yuuki Momose

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuuki2_4825.gif

A white card battler (and the white soldier) on the side of Otherworld King. He is one of Otherworld’s Three Heads, alongside Leon and Pantera. While appearing cold and cruel, he is very close to his younger sister, Kajitsu, dedicating himself to protecting her. When he realizes his plans are hurting her more than helping, he leaves her in the hands of the other core soldiers and later decides to fight alongside them. Though human, Yuuki is actually the reincarnation of the white world’s king.

In the second season He doesn't appear. Instead, his reincarnation, Zolder, plays a role.

  • Brother–Sister Incest: With Kajitsu. They are reincarnated lovers.
  • Expy: To J. They are both the rival, both use white, and both have a little sister they're protective of. Both spend some time working with the villains.
  • Good Costume Switch: Around the time he switches sides. Ironically, his villain outfit was white and his hero outfit was black.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He sides with Dan and the others starting in episode 36.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: To Kajitsu. For example, when Belga tries to flirt with her, Yuuki's response is nearly breaking Belga's arm. His reason for serving Otherworld King, and doing cruel things in his name, is because he wants to save Kajitsu from Mother Core.
  • The Rival: He serves as Dan's rival in the first series.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Kajitsu. In the past, he was the white world’s king and she was the green world’s princess. They were to be married, but were killed and reincarnated as siblings. On top of that, in this life, Kajitsu suffered and died young due to the burden of bearing Mother Core. They were then reincarnated as a human and Mazoku respectively, who have vastly different life spans.

Kajitsu Momose

Voiced by: Yoko Honda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kajitsu2_8567.gif

A green card battler, and the younger sister of Yuuki. She possesses mysterious powers, which she uses to send Dan into Grand Lolo. She at first comes off as rather emotionless. Kajitsu actually bears the light of Mother Core. Because she controls this great power, it causes a lot of strain on her body. She is deeply devoted to Yuuki because she’s actually the reincarnation of the green world’s princess, Yuuki’s lover in a past life.

  • Action Girl: She can be at times, but her sickly status tends to get in the way of that. When she does, she's on Dan's level.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: With Yuuki. They are reincarnated lovers.
  • Damsel in Distress: Only in the manga version, but woah. She gets kidnapped left and right.
  • Dark Magical Girl: She has quite a screwed up past, with possibly abusive (and now dead) parents, leaving her with only Yuuki. And she will do anything Yuuki says. In the beginning of the series, she has a very cold, emotionless demeanor. She eventually switches sides and becomes friends with the other bearers of core's light. Also, early on she plays just as much the role of rival to Dan as Yuuki.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Bearing Mother Core puts a huge burden on her body. She's often bed-ridden because of this.
  • Emotionless Girl: At first she seems that way. She eventually warms up to the Bearers of Cores Light.
  • Expy: To Kyouka. Both are the rival's little sister, and both have brother complexes.
  • Flower Motifs: Roses
  • Good Costume Switch: Around the time she switches sides.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Yuuki leaves her with the bearers of cores light, she stays with them.
  • Honorary Princess: She's not really a princess, but is often called one. In her past life, however...
  • Morality Pet: To Yuuki. He's cruel to everyone but her. He eventually switches sides along with her.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She does die in the manga as well, but is bought back to life.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Yuuki. In the past, she was the green world’s princess and he was the white world’s king. They were to be married, but were killed and reincarnated as siblings. On top of that, in this life, Kajitsu suffered and died young due to the burden of bearing Mother Core. They were then reincarnated as a Mazoku and human respectively, who have vastly different life spans.

Kenzo Hyoudo

Voiced by: Aya Endo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kenzo2_7819.gif

A green card battler who appears at the Grand Lolo Championships. Though only a third grader, he makes it to the final round, against Dan. He is revealed to actually be working alongside Yuuki, and seeks the wish awarded to the champion for selfish means. He is also the true green soldier, not Kajitsu, as Dan previously believed. After losing to Dan, the two become friends, and he stays with the other core soldiers.

In the second season, Kenzo works as a scientist, alongside Stella. The two have somewhat of a rivalry. He doesn’t really battle anymore.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Kenzo might want to look into getting his name changed, because obviously it’s hard to remember.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: Especially in Brave, where he becomes one of the planet's most significant scientists (at the age of 11) and stops playing Battle Spirits to focus more on his work.
  • Blush Sticker: Permanent ones
  • Demoted to Extra: In the manga version. He's a minor villain.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Happens pretty quickly after the Grand Rolo Championship arc.
  • Lightning Glare: With Stella, his fellow scientist and rival
  • Mission Control: In Brave. He stays behind working as a scientist with Sttela.
  • Opaque Lenses: His glasses appear this way most of the time.
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: When the OP animation gets modified
  • The Rival: With Stella, the other scientist working with the Beautiful Sophia. The rivalry is mostly limited to light-hearted bickering, as they can work well together when the situation turns serious.

    Otherworld King and his Army

Otherworld King

Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ikaiou_9205.jpg

The ruler of Otherworld. He was enslaving its inhabitants so that they would construct Horizon Ladders. He possesses great powers and sees himself as vital for the existence of Otherworld. He was once an explorer, who found Grand Lolo by chance and wanted to colonize it. He was mocked for his ideas, and began to hate humanity for the way he was treated. He planned revenge on the rest of the humans, whom he believed hadn't progressed as far as himself.

  • Big Bad: As the King of Otherworld, who is behind everything that's gone on since the beginning.
  • Evil Old Folks: Though he does restore his youth.
  • Power Gives You Wings: His battleform gains them later in the series.

Leon

Voiced by: Atsushi Miyauchi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bsleon_1190.jpg

Leon is one of Otherworld’s Three Heads. A very powerful card battler, who uses a hybrid deck. After Kajitsu is left with the core soldiers, he makes numerous attempts to re-capture her. Leon actually comes from the past.

Pantera

Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bspantera_8295.jpg

One of Otherworld’s Three Heads. Pantera was actually built by Otherworld King. Recorded within him is the data from past battles in Otherworld, making him aware of most strategies imaginable. He believes his only weakness is that he lacks a heart. Because of this, he loses to Dan. Dan considers him a friend, and believes that he can become like a human. In truth, there are multiple robots like Pantera. Each is the true Grand Core for one of the colored worlds.

  • Promotion to Opening Titles: When the OP animation gets modified
  • Redemption Equals Death: Dan was right in believing that there was good in him. However, the last thing he can do before Otherworld King blows him to bits is provide Dan with a new key card.

Kazan

Voiced by: Kenji Nomura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kazan2_1348.gif

A soldier who is Yuuki’s ally. When Dan first comes to Otherworld, he is attacking Zungurii’s village. Kazan comes from the future. The reason he’s loyal to Yuuki is because he resembles Kazan’s former captian. When Yuuki joins with the core soldiers, he does so as well.

In the second season, he's a commander in the war against the mazoku.

Belga

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/belga_6532.jpg

An arrogant boy from the white world, promised power by his father. He plans to be the next white king and white soldier, but is humiliated by Yuuki in battle. He later returns, joining Leon in his attempts to capture Kajitsu.

    Other characters

Magisa

Voiced by: Satsuki Yukino
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/magisa2_2075.gif

The Otherworld Witch. Although she tries her hardest to defend Otherworld before the Core Soldiers arrived, she lacks her former strength. This is because it was stolen by Otherworld King, along with her deck. Although she doesn’t look it, she’s over 4000 years old, and laments over the fact that she still remains single.

Zungurii

Voiced by: Ai Horanai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zungurii_1390.gif

A monkey-like child who Dan meets when he first enters Grand Lolo. After Dan saves his village from attack, the two travel together, in order to free his captured family members. Although Zungurii isn’t much of a card battler, he helps the group out in any way he can, especially cooking.

Serge

Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bsserge_2811.jpg

Mai’s loyal butler. He pilots The Violet. Both Serge and the Violet originally belonged to Namii, a card battler from the purple world.

Plym Machina

Voiced by: Kanae Itō
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/plym1_4645.gif

The Beautiful Sophia’s mechanic. She’s extremely cheerful, and loves mechanical things. She tends to make up her own words. She battles Kenzo with a white deck. Though she’s highly inexperienced and loses, this makes her fall in love with him.

  • Cheerful Child: Even more than Zungurii, perhaps. She's a ball of innocent cuteness even though she used to live on the streets, and has every right to be more bitter.
  • Meaningful Name: She’s a mechanic, after all.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Even her one battle was ridiculous.

Youth Glynnhorn

Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/youth2_2390.gif

The Beautiful Sophia’s pilot. At first, he doesn’t like Dan much, finding him incompetent for losing to Barone soon after coming to the future. Mai and Clackey try to help him see Dan’s worth. Youth later comes to see Dan as both a rival and inspiration, wanting to become as strong as him, and someday beat him.

Kenzo Hyoudo

See above

Stella Korabelishchikov

Voiced by: Satsuki Yukino
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stella2_2190.gif

A scientist from the future time who works with Kenzo. She seems to like taunting and one-upping him.

  • Expy: To Magisa. They both are voiced by Satsuki Yukino, and she has a similar relationship with Kenzo.
  • Lightning Glare: With Kenzo, her fellow scientist and rival.
  • Mission Control: She usually stays behind, working as a scientist with Kenzo.
  • The Rival: With Kenzo, the other scientist working with the Beautiful Sophia. The rivalry is mostly limited to light-hearted bickering, as they can work well together when the situation turns serious.

En and Fant

Fant voiced by: Aya Endo
En voiced by: Yu Shimamura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enfant2_8830.gif

Two mazoku children that were being used as hostages by humans. Dan rescues them and takes them to the Sophia. They seem to have insatiable appetites.

  • Badass Adorable: Especially Fant. She once punches through a wall.
  • Big Eater: And if no food is in sight, they’ll start chewing on chairs or people’s hands.
  • Meaningful Name: Combined, they spell enfant.
  • Tagalong Kid: They ride around on the Sophia with Dan and the others, despite being babies.

Kazan

See above

Zolder Grave

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zolder2_1904.gif

The one who called Dan into the future. He’s the reincarnation of Yuuki Momose. He has a much more laid-back personality, however, and is a weight-lifter.

    Mazoku

Queen Gilfam

Voiced by: Michiko Neya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gilfam2_1213.gif

The mazoku leader. She believes Dan is humanity’s enemy. She’s very harsh to her subordinates, as she had Duc imprisoned for losing to Dan, and made Barone give up his territory. Later, Zazie betrays her, but her friend Lucretia gives her life to protect the queen.

Barone

Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barone2_7939.gif

A brave user like Dan. He becomes fascinated with Dan, believing he's the only opponent capable of quenching his thirst for battle. He is later deemed a traitor thanks to Zazie, and is forced to leave his territory. Afterwards, he allies with Dan for a while. He seems to be in charge of the mazoku by the end of the series.

  • Blood Knight: At first, battles are the only thing he's actually interested in, and even after Dan gets him to look at the world outside the battlefield, he still enjoys playing Battle Spirits a lot.
  • The Good King: What he essentially is to the mazoku by the end, representing them in the final battle with full intention of pulling the trigger, and teaching that since mazoku are descended from humans, it's okay to use human ideas like a grave marker.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He becomes Dan's biggest ally in the Prison Imperial Squad arc.
  • Meaningful Name: It means baron, to go along with Duc(Duke).
  • Mr. Fanservice: Well, he’s been nude more than once.
  • Pet the Dog: He briefly takes care of a little human boy
  • Pointy Ears: He has the standard mazoku elf ears.
  • The Rival: With Dan, whom he sees as the only opponent powerful enough to quench his thirst.

Zazie/ Izaz

Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zazie2_382.gif

A rather mysterious and unpredictable mazoku. He wears a mask over his face. While at first, he appeared to be manipulating things for fun, he’s shown to have more dangerous motives.

Duc

Voiced by: Kenji Hamada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duc2_575.gif

The first mazoku Dan faces. After losing to Dan a second time, he’s punished with imprisonment. He later returns as a cyborg, and with no memory of his former self. He’s has a "Brave Killer" deck, because it is especially designed to be used against Braves.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: By Zazie and Geraid. With the emphasis on crazy.
  • The Dragon: Zazie uses him as one, and a very effective one at that.
  • Electric Torture: Gets this in prison
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: He doesn't remember his family or anyone else while he's the Prison General.
  • Meaningful Name: It means duke, to go along with Barone(Baron).
  • Pointy Ears: He has the standard mazoku elf ears.
  • Starter Villain: Duc is the first opponent Dan faces in the future. However, unlike other exemple of this tropes, he reappears later in the series.

Rugain

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rugain2_6049.gif

Duc’s son. He greatly respects his father. He is rather similar to Youth, and the two become friends.

  • Expy: To Suzuri, aesthetically.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He starts to help out Dan after his fathers' arrest, and later becomes a full ally.
  • Unusual Ears: They're actually pretty unique ones among mazoku.

Flora Perfume

Voiced by: Yoko Honda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flora2_6958.gif

A loyal servant of Barone. After he's exiled, she follows him along with Eolus.

She’s very similar to Kajitsu Momose, in that she uses both Kajitsu and Yuuki’s main cards in battle, and that she can use green butterflies. This is because she's Kajitsu’s reincarnation.
