  • Always in Class One: Enforced by Reborn, as shown in a chapter where everyone has split apart and moved to different classrooms and he was able to convince the Principal to let the students choose their rooms.
  • Color-Coded Characters: They do have color schemes that are the exact color as their Dying Will Flame:
    • Tsuna: Orange
    • Gokudera: Red
    • Yamamoto: Blue
    • Ryohei: Yellow.
    • Lambo: Green
    • Hibari: Violet
    • Mukuro/Chrome: Indigo
  • Dark and Troubled Past:
    • Gokudera was an illegitimate child born from an affair his father had. Since the mafia denies the birth of illegitimate children, he was denied the right to see his own mother at an early age and could only see her a few times a year during piano lessons (where she could not reveal her identity as his mother) until his mother eventually died in a car accident, causing him to run away from home to join the mafia, though he was rejected by other families for his association with music and for being an oriental half-breed (half Japanese and half Italian). In the early parts of the series, it was a Hilariously Abusive Childhood due to his older sister constantly feeding him poison before piano recitals to the point of getting a stomach ache every time he sees her.
    • Mukuro was born into a mafia family that used children as "guinea pigs" for research, torturing and experimenting on children until they were left to die. Mukuro in particular was experimented on so many times that he died repeatedly, constantly coming back to life and gaining the Six Paths of Reincarnation that allowed him to rebel. After slaughtering his entire family and saving two captors, he vowed to destroy the entire mafia.
    • Chrome lived a sheltered life and experienced Parental Neglect from both her mother and step-father; after attempting to rescue a cat, she gets involved in a fatal car accident that costs her right eye and many of her internal organs. While in the intensive care unit, she overhears her mother outright stating that no one wants her alive and that she would never consider donating any organs to her daughter.
  • Determinator: All of them are this, which is to be expected since the Dying Will Flame runs on a person's resolve.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Yamamoto, Ryohei and Chrome are Tsuna's only guardians that were never once enemies that had tried to attack him before. There's also Hibari, who still never considers himself a friend of Tsuna.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: Although all of them are made out to be 'True Companions'. A couple of the guardians barely share any dialogue or interests with each other.
  • Full-Potential Upgrade: The Vongola rings are this to them, where they are able to draw out their fullest potentials to their battles when they are able to light up their rings and train them.
  • Generation Xerox: The Tenth Generation resembles the First Generation of the Vongola to a nigh-impossible degree. Each member of the Tenth Generation has personalities and physical appearances corresponding to their respective predecessor that makes them almost identicalto the point that they even use the same weapons/fighting styles.
  • Goroawase Number: Each of their names either has a kanji or anything representing a number.
  • Implausible Hair Color:
    • Gokudera and Ryohei both have grey hair despite only being teenagers in Junior High School, with flashbacks showing that they have had these hair colors since childhood.
    • Mukuro has indigo hair, similar to the color of his flame.
    • Chrome has dark purple hair.
  • Last-Name Basis:
    • Tsuna is occasionally referred to as "Sawada" by some, such as Ryohei, Adult I-Pin, Lal-Mirch, and a few of his enemies.
    • Gokudera, Yamamoto, and Hibari are almost unanimously referred to with their last names by pretty much everyone. In the Japanese version, Tsuna uses the honorific "kun" when speaking to Gokudera to show their friendship, uses "san" when speaking with Hibari out of respect, and doesn't use any honorifics when talking to Yamamoto likely because of his casual demeanor not calling for any.
    • Ryohei is referred to as "Sasagawa" by Basil out of respect.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Every one of Tsuna's male guardians is easy on the eyes and has attracted many girls from the school. Hibari and Mukuro are the best cases for this, due to their Tall, Dark, and Handsome Dispositions. Tsuna himself turns into one in his Hyper Will Dying Mode.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform:
    • Most of the Vongola guardians wear customized school uniforms that are usually different compared to what the regular students are seen wearing.
    • Hibari dresses in the standard Disciplinary Committee uniform, however he drapes his gakuran around his shoulders like a cape. On some occasions he will wear the regular Namimori Uniform with a sweater vest.
    • Chrome wears the Kokuyo Middle School uniform with some alterations, such as exposing her midriff and wearing boots with a skull design on them. However, upon entering Namimori Junior High, she begins to start wearing the standard girls' uniform.
  • Party Scattering: Happens to all of the guardians when their boss was killed by Byakuran and they have to fight for their lives.
  • Personality Powers: Each guardian's personality has a connection to the main type of flame they possess as explained by Reborn.
  • Protectorate: The main duty of the guardians is to protect the Tenth Vongola boss from any harm, but this varies per person. Gokudera, Yamamoto, and Ryohei take this job seriously, Lambo is too young to understand and is protected by others as well. Hibari and Mukuro are aloof and sketchy that only help when the family is in deep danger, and Chrome is pretty neutral. Tsuna, on the other hand, tries his best to protect them as well, which is always the reason why he fights.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The task of returning the Vongola Family back to its former glory falls in the hands of an overly devoted Foreign Exchange Student, a Cloudcuckoolander who loves baseball and coincidentally is a skilled swordsman, a boxing club leader with No Indoor Voice, a Bratty Half-Pint that cries over everything, a Jerkass delinquent who leads an Absurdly Powerful Student Council, a wanted criminal capable of pulling Grand Theft Me, and an Innocent Flower Girl who happens to admire said criminal. All of whom are led by the biggest loser in school that fails at everything he attempts and just so happens to show his true strength when his life depends on it.
  • Reincarnation: Daemon Spade greatly implies that this is the true reason why the Tenth Generation is almost a modern-day carbon copy of the First Generation. Which is a bit of headscratcher considering that Mukuro (logically) can't be his reincarnation since he's technically still alive.
  • Seven Heavenly Virtues: In contrast to the Varia. Which is why there is a fundamental difference between the two.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Remove Tsuna and/or Yamamoto from the group and everyone will start to insult or fight one another. But if they are faced with an enemy, you can expect a truce until the threat is dealt with.

"I consider everything that happened to be precious moments of my life. The pain. The suffering. The fun…And I am here right now, because everyone was there for me. I couldn't have accomplished anything by standing still, without anybody’s help. I treasure every moment I have spent here. Unlucky? I feel pretty lucky. This is my resolve."

The series' main protagonist, the tenth Vongola boss, and the holder of the Sky Ring. A fourteen year old Junior High student that fails in just about everything he pursues; receiving terrible grades in school, failing at sports, and unanimously regarded as a loser by all of his peers, to the point of receiving the nickname “No-Good Tsuna".

His life changes after coming home from school one day to meet an infant hitman named Reborn who informs Tsuna that he is a descendant from one of the most powerful Italian mafia families and will be training him until further notice. At first, Tsuna is in disbelief of this revelation, until he is shot in the head with a bullet that temporarily kills him and brings him back to life with all limitations removed from his body, allowing him to use the power of his Dying Will and perform incredible feats.

He stands out from most of his rival families due to his large distaste towards the mafia and would rather live a normal life.

  • 11th-Hour Superpower:
    • In the Kokuyo Arc, after struggling to defeat Mukuro Rokudo and his subordinates, Leon conveniently finishes his metamorphosis and creates the X-Gloves and Criticism Shot that allows him to enter Hyper Dying Will Mode and stand a better chance against Mukuro.
    • In the Future Arc, Tsuna has his neck snapped by Byakuran and hardly stands a chance against him after he captures Yuni, until Giotto appears and releases seal on the Vongola Rings so they can return back to their original form.
  • Accidental Murder: He unintentionally attacks the Vongola Ninth inside of Gola Mosca, unbeknownst that Xanxus had devised the plan to frame Tsuna for killing the boss, fortunately, he manages to survive this attack.
  • Accidental Pervert:
  • There's also the time where Shitt. P. had a photo of him accidentally peeking up Kyoko's skirt and having a nosebleed.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga his eye color is closer to yellow/orange/gold. The anime changes it to brown.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Somewhat. At his core, Tsuna still retains the same personality in the anime adaption, though his more blunt and snarky tendencies from the manga are downplayed, he's more scared and cowardly, and his strained relationship with his parents is hardly touched upon.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Thanks to the anime stretching out episodes, some scenes of Tsuna freaking out and complaining even more than what he does in the manga are added. A good example is the time where he has to put on the contacts made by Spanner. While in the manga he puts them on immediately and only complains about the blurriness, the anime has him freaking out over the idea of putting them on over a span of three episodes.
  • Affectionate Nickname: His mom calls him "Tsu-kun" and the future counterpart of Kyoko does as well.
  • Afraid of Needles: When he's diagnosed with Skullitis, one of his embarrassing secrets reveals that he's afraid of getting shots and regularly skips school on days that he has to.
  • All-Loving Hero: He'll forgive anyone—including people who are completely unremorseful. He won't kill either, although freezing Xanxus counts as okay. And so does reducing Byakuran into nothingness, but that was sorta justified.
  • Always Save the Girl: Usually rescues Kyoko and Haru whenever they get caught up in Reborn's schemes, to the cost of his own safety. And he does the same to Yuni, as he tries his best to defend her from Byakuran.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: It’s difficult to place his exact issue, but taking into account how often he’s bullied for being useless it’s pretty obvious that he has extremely low self-esteem.
  • Animals Hate Him: Dogs do not like Tsuna. Well, when he got older, supposedly over time. When he was younger, it was actually a dog that wanted to lick him, but the poor guy was so terrified he cried.
  • Animal Motifs:
    • Lions. His "reliability" was compared to that of a lion, almost gets attacked by one at the zoo, and his Box Weapon is a lion cub.
    • Tuna Fish, due to it sounding similar to his own name. His bedroom door has a tuna fish with his name on it and Kyoko gives him a good luck charm with tuna fish on it.
  • Anime Hair: It's been like that since birth. The official wiki states no conditioner can bring it down.
  • Audience Surrogate: Because he is the only sane person in a world full of weird and crazy people, Tsuna is often the one that has to receive exposition on how the universe operates and information on the mafia.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He wouldn't be a mafia boss if he didn't wear one. It's his main outfit in the Choice Arc and wears one during the beginning of the Inheritance Ceremony Arc. Promotional material is constantly featuring him wearing a suit as well.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The main reason why he likes Kyoko so much is because she was the first girl who willingly spoke to him in a year.
  • Berserk Button: Not really noticeable considering his status as a Lovable Coward, but do anything to his friends or loved ones and he will snap in rage.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Even mentioning his friends in a sentence with a threat in it will provoke a violent reaction.
  • Big Brother Worship: Certainly looks up to Dino and admires him for his skills, even going to him for advice. And as well to Ryohei, for his tenacity and the fact that he is Kyoko's big brother.
  • Blessed with Suck: Has the makings to be the greatest mafia boss of the Vongola and possesses unworldly power, yet he hates the mafia for forcing such a terrible burden on him without consent and being forced to undo generations worth of mistakes the Vongola has cultivated after becoming a crime organization.
  • Book Dumb: In the beginning, he's pretty much the school's Butt-Monkey that gets the worst grades. And for the longest time, it really did look like he was all-around useless. However, after the series got more serious, he's shown to not actually be stupid - when he's determined and tries, he's very smart about fighting and utilizing his abilities in combat. He still has bad grades, but it's shown that if people actually bother to help him, he actually can sufficiently well in class (e.g. the time when G disguised himself as Gokudera and tutored Tsuna, and he manages to solve a problem in class).
  • Break the Cutie: Happens every arc. Usually as a result of trusting people too easily.
    • In the Kokuyo Arc, it was the supposed "death" of Lancia after learning that he was a pawn of Mukuro Rokudo and was nothing more than an innocent bystander that was forced to participate in a number of terrible crimes.
    • In the Varia Arc, after being lead to believe that he "killed" the Vongola Ninth inside of Gola Mosca when it was really Xanxus's fault.
    • Is at an all-time low in the Future Arc where Tsuna just can't seem to catch a break. First, Reborn goes missing for several days without any signs of returning, then Tsuna's dropped into an apocalyptic future without warning only to find that he's permanently trapped in this timeline and can only return home upon defeating Byakuran, all of his friends (including the ones that cannot fight) are forced into this timeline as well, and the status of many of his loved ones in this timeline is completely unknown (with the implications that some of them are either missing or dead). It gets to the point that Tsuna even cries in his bed praying for the safety of everyone and begins to start lashing out on Haru and Lambo when under pressure.
    • The Inheritance Ceremony Arc is arguably Tsuna's darkest hour. Tsuna befriends Enma and the Simon Famiglia over the course of a few days after bonding over their similarities, only to find out they were deceiving them the whole time and are actually a vengeful rival family that wants to destroy the family because of what happened years ago between Giotto and Cozart. They proceed to slowly take down the family, near-fatally wound Yamamoto to the point of hospitalization, kidnap Chrome, and indirectly cause Ryohei to be sent to Vindice Prison. Things get even worse after learning that his father was apparently the one responsible for killing Enma's family (fortunately, this was a lie) and that the Simon Famiglia were under the control of Daemon Spade.
  • But Not Too Foreign: He is the descendant of the first Vongola boss, Giotto, who was Italian.
  • Butt-Monkey: Practically the poster child for this, in addition to being extremely clumsy, receiving poor grades, and bad at sports, he is also constantly the butt of many jokes that usually result in some kind of physical pain or humiliation courtesy of Reborn. It gets less apparent as the show goes on, but he can never catch a break until he becomes the boss.
  • Calling the Old Man Out:
    • He attempts to give one to Iemitsu during the Representative Battle about him never being around and not knowing anything about him, though this one backfires and is never addressed again.
    • Delivers a strong one to Reborn give up during the Representative Battle.
Tsuna: You suddenly show up saying that you're a tutor and want to make me into a mafia boss! And then it's all just been a mess! You used your spartan training on me, made me confess my love to the girl I like against my will, dragged me out even though I didn't want to, and forced me to have fun or fight with people!! You made a disaster of my school life!! ...But... If I look back, even as close as yesterday... in the end I had fun... I really had lots of fun.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: Other than his obvious infatuation with Kyoko being his main problem, he also gets pretty flustered at Chrome’s kiss on his cheek, blushes a lot around Yuni, becomes absolutely still at Haru’s close proximity, and when meeting Bianchi for the first time he became embarrassed that a pretty girl was talking to him.
  • Character Development: Tsuna's personality has developed greatly since the beginning of the manga, from being a cowardly, useless individual who gave up easily, to an individual of great resolve to do whatever he must do to protect the companions he has made. Later, he is depicted as being comfortable with leadership, as the others in his Famiglia look to him for decisions he dispenses without hesitation. Well at least until the final chapter, which pretty much says that Tsuna has hardly changed since the beginning of the series besides befriending Reborn and his other allies.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Reborn, and the Vongola family by extension, want him to become the boss as soon as possible, though he's reluctant about the whole ordeal.
  • The Chosen One: Tsuna was chosen to inherit the Sky Ring and become the boss Timoteo back when he was only a small child, and would later be chosen by Giotto to receive the Vongola Rings in their true form after proving himself. Doubles as The Unchosen One because he was only chosen because he's the only living candidate, as all of Timoteo's children tragically died and Xanxus was never a blood relative.
  • Color Motif: Orange. It's the color of his eyes (in the manga and always the color in Hyper Dying Will Mode), the color of his flame, and many of his casual outfits consist of some variation of orange, including his shoes (mostly notably his Future Arc attire). The color itself is appropriate for his warm and kind personality that is intended to draw parallels to the sky itself.
  • Cowardly Lion: He gets scared easily and cries a lot when in anxiety-provoking or frightening situations, however minor and mostly phases out during the Varia Arc in exchange for his over reluctance to be a mafia boss. But try to hurt one of his family or loved ones, he will defend them the best way that he can. This is best shown in the Future Arc, where he defended both versions of Kyoko without his Hyper Dying Will mode from Tazaru, and Kyoko notices him shivering in fear.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: In the Daily Life Arc, Tsuna frequently gets jealous of any guys that attempt to flirt with Kyoko.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Falling downstairs one moment, doing aerial acrobatics the next.
  • Curtains Match the Window: In the anime, he has brown hair and brown eyes.
  • Declaration of Protection: He makes it his goal to protect his friends during the Future arc, especially to Kyoko and Haru. He also later gives one to Yuni.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: With his attitude, Tsuna is effectively what happens when an average teenager found themselves in a Shounen setting/story along with how they would react. They don't care about being the best, they just want their normal life back. This is one of the big reasons why he refuses to be the Tenth at the epilogue, as he would rather deal with mundane life issues instead of being a mafia don.
  • Dub Name Change: Not him, but his signature form "Dying Will" is referred to as Deathperation in VIZ translations.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Shamal had to check Tsuna's chest to tell that he's not a girl. Perhaps a case of Failed a Spot Check, but then again, Tsuna's almost to Kyoko levels in his manliness.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": He doesn't really enjoy people referring to him as "boss", but with all the people he frequently meets who recognize him as the Tenth Boss of the Vongola it gets harder to dispute. When he first meets Gokudera, he even asks for him to call him by his actual name and wonders if they can simply be regular classmates, only to realize how scary Gokudera was.
  • Dude Magnet: He seems to be more popular with guys than girls. This gets lampshaded earlier on by Reborn.
Reborn: You sure are popular. With your subordinates.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: He seems to be subject to this a lot. He's willing to die for Kyoko, despite hardly knowing her at the time or even talking to her. And in more recent chapters, there's his interactions and relationship with Yuni. The entire thing is made to have a sort of "Knight in Shining Armor protecting the Damsel in Distress" feel. In fact, it appears that what pushed and influenced Tsuna to decide to take her under his wing and protect her was the tear-filled, self-sacrificing feeling in her eyes.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: He's supposed to be the 10th Generation Vongola Boss (against his will, of course), but he's only 14 and is very scrawny and rather pathetic looking. A lot of people say variations of this phrase and find it generally hard to believe. This phrase isn't explicitly said by Spanner, but implied when he gets Tsuna some prisoner clothes, and remarks in surprise and exasperation that even the small size is too big for him.
  • Eye Color Change: Tsuna's eyes are normally brown. However, when he goes into Dying Will Mode, they change into an orange-ish yellow.
  • The Faceless: His future self’s face is obscured in shadows, preventing the viewers from glancing at his face.
  • Family Theme Naming: Each member of the Vongola Family line, all the way from the First to Tsunayoshi (the Tenth), is named after a Tokugawa Shogun. Tsuna's name is also a portmanteau of the suffixes of his parent's two names, Iemitsu and Nana.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • His indecisiveness and lack of resolution to fight had been called out many times by other characters as he needs to step up and be confident as the next boss of the Vongola Family. This is the reason why Reborn is usually harsh on him, forcing him to fight and try to control a situation by himself in order for him to learn how to lead a group.
    • Discussed in his fight against Daemon Spade, as he thinks that Tsuna doesn't have the heart to lead the Vongola that he always envisioned and cites this as the reason he wants to kill him. Reborn counters that this exact trait of his is what led to the other guardians and former enemies to follow him as he always thinks of others before himself.
  • Flash Step: After he gets the X-Gloves, he is capable of moving at high speeds by using his flames as propulsion.
  • Friend to All Children: Every child he meets gets really attached to him. Particularly of the deadly, assassin kind. It's even lampshaded that he constantly finds himself babysitting them (which he laments about). However, even though he complains and finds it an inconvenience, he sincerely does like them. In fact, one chapter was dedicated to showing that, out of all the characters, Tsuna was the one that was most fit to raise Lambo. So far, he's been raising Lambo and I-Pin, and Futa was shown to get very attached to him. No matter how I-Pin and Lambo annoy and ridicule him, he tries his best to take care of them and protect them from danger, a trait that he seems to have gotten from his mother.
  • Goroawase Number: 27 is a pun on Tsuna, and it appears on his gloves and headset.
  • Gravity Master: Briefly when his and Enma's Rings combined to create the Oath Flame so he could defeat Daemon Spade.
  • Hates Being Touched: It isn’t noticeable at first, but throughout his interactions with people it’s pretty clear that he feels awkward or uncomfortable when people touch him.
  • Hates Their Parent: He has zero respect towards his father, only viewing him as alcoholic deadbeat that left the family to be a construction worker and thinking his Iemitsu is as big of a loser as him. The fact that Tsuna eventually learns that his father is the person responsible for forcing him into the mafia doesn't make the situation any better either.
  • The Heart: Incredibly selfless and accepting to a fault, he manages to be friends with almost everyone in the story. Notably, he manages to be friends with Byakuran and Emma, who wanted to kill him for their own personal reasons. This is how many characters sum him up as the perfect candidate for the Tenth Boss for the Vongola Family, as he represents the sky that accepts and encompasses everything. This trait combined with Benevolent Boss is precisely why both the Ninth and his father, the Vongola external advisor, want him to become the Tenth, as having such a person as the boss can change the Vongola mafia for the better with his mindset. However, this blew up in their faces as it is also because of these traits that he doesn't want to get involved with mafia world as he wasn't even given a choice in the matter in the first place and had to be dragged there kicking and screaming. Not surprisingly, he formally turns down the position of Tenth at the last chapter, plunging the future of the Vongola into uncertainty and turning the whole affair into a "Shaggy Dog" Story.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Happens after Yamamoto is brutally beaten to the point of hospitalization before the Inheritance Ceremony.
    • After finding out that his own father (supposedly) killed Enma's parents.
    • After his father defeats him in one hit.
  • Heroic RRoD: Experiences this when he was first shot with the Criticism Bullet and after his fight with Mukuro, where the strain of using it turned into pain that made him pass out.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Did this a lot in the beginning, and still does sometimes in later chapter. It's also something that pisses Reborn off immensely, and is shown as something he'll have to get over eventually. So when Tsuna demonstrates even a tiny bit of self-confidence, Reborn regards it as a vast improvement.
  • Honor Before Reason: Played with. A lot of his problems could’ve been easily solved by offing his enemies, but of course Tsuna dislikes resorting to that option and he easily gives mercy to those who probably don’t even deserve it.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Initially, but after the Kokuyo arc he gets better at this thanks to his Hyper Intuition. Unfortunately, he keeps on giving everyone he meets a chance, which they will be more than happy to take advantage of.
  • Hyper-Awareness: It's called Hyper Intuition in his case, which is one of the things that links Tsuna to the first head of the Vongola family. This allows him to sense if a person is lying and helps him dodge enemy fire.
  • An Ice Person: His Zero Point Breakthrough: First Edition, which is primarily used for sealing Dying Will Flames and those who use them.
  • Iconic Outfit: His Namimori Middle School uniform that he begins wearing in the Varia Arc, consisting of a sweater-vest, white button-up shirt, a blue tie, and khaki pants. Alongside white and orange sneakers.
  • Idiot Hero: Has terrible grades and thinks Reborn's true form is a different person named Chaos.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Wants nothing to do with the mafia and just wants to live a normal life with his newfound friends. Unfortunately for him Reborn and the Ninth have a say in that matter. Even after all the fights that he faced as the future Vongola Decimo, he still maintains this stance.
  • Image Song:
    • In the anime he has three songs of his own: "Tsuna Life", "Mamorubeki Mono" note , and "Hitotsu Dake" note .
    • Has three duets: "Katekyo Ondo" note  and "Canvas" note (both duets with Reborn) and "RIGHT NOW" (duet with Basil).
  • Improbable Weapon User: The X-Gloves. While pretty badass looking, they're still gloves. Non-combat form: Woolly Mittens.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Thanks to the Ninth getting old, Xanxus not having the blood of the Vongola, and the other candidates dying, Tsuna is the only one left capable of inheriting the Title of "Vongola Decimo". But unfortunately, he is not in any way capable of leading or protecting anyone, which is why the Ninth sent Reborn to tutor him. Hints of the future means that he is successful in being the tenth mafia boss.
  • Irony: He's usually the only one who can see through Reborn's Paper Thin Disguises, and yet, when Reborn temporarily reverts to his adult form during the final arc, Tsuna's the only one that doesn't recognize him.
  • Jerkass Ball: Happens in the Future arc after being put under immense stress because of the situation and snaps at both Lambo and Haru for being ignorant of the dangers. However, he later apologizes to both of them and learns that his friends give him strength and it wasn't fair to get angry at them for being unaware.
  • Kame Hame Hadoken: His X-Burner, which shoots a large blast of Dying Will Flames. Taken up to eleven with the XX-Burner as it has the strength of two X-Burners combined. Previously, Tsuna had to use one hand for the X-Burner and the other to keep himself from being blown away. The XX-Burner uses both hands for the attack.
  • Kid Hero: He's quite young, around 14 when he starts training as Vongola Decimo.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Is this for Gokudera. He reacted quite fiercely to learning Tsuna died and was the only one to visit his grave and did it quite often too.
  • Loser Protagonist: Despite what one may think, his regular self outside of his powered up modes remains the same somewhat cowardly passive worrywart he begins the story as.
  • Lovable Coward: Would rather run away and back off from all fights, but if you hurt any of his close friends or loved ones, he will not hesitate to fight whoever is threatening them.
  • Loving a Shadow: He claims to love Kyoko for the most surface level reasons such as her appearance and even daydreams about being married to her despite them rarely interacting.
  • Made of Iron: No matter how much damage his body gets in a fight, he will be able to stand up after. He has been blown off, slammed into walls, and even had his bones broken many times, but was able to shrug it all off.
  • Magic Pants: His Dying Will Mode burns all his clothes off, save for his underwear.
  • Magnetic Hero: While some come to him for his heritage as a Vongola heir, others just gravitate to him because he's that considerate of a person. Enough to make an alliance with a family that historically hates the Vongola, even!
  • Men Can't Keep House: When Kyoko and Haru go on strike until they are told about Millefiore during the Future Arc, Tsuna and his guardians are forced to take care of themselves, demonstrating that he is a Lethal Chef that can only make cup ramen and is terrible at doing laundry.
  • Mistaken for Gay: In an early chapter, poor Tsuna gets mistaken at school for "becoming Gokudera's bitch," since Gokudera suddenly became... very affectionate towards Tsuna. Gokudera certainly didn't deny it.
  • Nice Guy: While he has the habit of being blunt (though only in the early parts of the manga) towards others, Tsuna is still an easy-going and friendly person that genuinely cares about his friends and his mafia family, even if he doesn't want to admit it, even Lal Mirch describes him as being "ridiculously nice". He regularly forgives his own enemies, even the cruel ones that don't deserve forgiveness or feel no remorse for their actions, and also admits that some of his hatred towards the mafia stems from disgust at some of the terrible things they have done.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown:
    • at the receiving end of this in his fight against Daemon Spade, where he is hopelessly outmatched. The fight ends up with Daemon punching his body until his bones are broken into pieces.
    • Also against his father Iemitsu, where he was knocked out by him with only a single punch.
  • No Indoor Voice: Occurs whenever he goes into Dying Will Mode, in addition to losing all of his clothes.
  • No Romantic Resolution: He ends up never being able to confess his love to Kyoko or reciprocate Haru’s affections towards him.
  • Older Than They Look: Due to his short height and childish face, he looks about two or three years younger than the rest of the cast.
  • Only Sane Man: His unfortunate position as the straight man among a gang of complete lunatics provides much of the comic relief throughout the story.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: As shown in his fight with Dendro Chilum. He kicks the poor guy to the roof to show off his newfound combat prowess.
  • Power Fist: The X-Gloves worn by Tsuna (and their predecessor, the I-Gloves worn by Vongola I.) light on fire, allow flight, absorption of other flames, and the ability to FREEZE.
  • Progressively Prettier: Applies to both the anime and manga. Just compare how he looks in the first season to how he looks in the final season.
  • The Promise: Made a promise to Yuni to protect her from Byakuran and did his best to fulfill that promise, but wasn't able to fulfill it since Yuni did a Herioc Sacrifice to revive the Arcobalenos. He made another promise to Reborn, promising that he won't let him die even if Reborn wants to do so.
  • Required Secondary Power: His X-Burner is powerful, but it requires Tsuna to perfectly control the Dying Will Flame output of both his hands or else he gets blasted away by the recoil. At first he tries to only fire off the X-Burner on the ground to mitigate this, and only tries firing in the air after he's backed into a corner (and even then he's still blasted by the recoil). He spends most of the Merone Base raid working with Spanner to develop contact lenses that allow him to measure his flame output, which allow him to perfectly fire the technique regardless of whether he's on the ground or in the air. Using the Oath Flame allows him to use the Earth Flame's Gravity Master to similarly cancel out the recoil.
  • Save the Villain: Even when his adversaries do their damnedest to make it hell for Tsuna, he will try to get through to them beforehand.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: He definitely screams like a little girl in almost every surprise that Reborn will throw at him, and little puppies too. Expect him to scream every single episode.
  • Shirtless Captives: When he's captured by Spanner, he wakes up handcuffed to a bed wearing nothing but his boxers.
  • Shirtless Scene:
    • Every time he is hit with the Dying Will Bullet, complete with Goofy Print Underwear.
    • Had a shared one with Gokudera when they accidentally peeped on Lal Mirch.
    • When he wakes up and realizes that he was captured by Spanner.
  • Shonen Hair: Although it looks a lot softer than the normal example. A couple of official artworks show it blowing in the wind.
  • Shrinking Violet: A male, Moe version. Very shy, can't talk with girls, hates standing out, and only wants to live life like a normal boy.
  • Signature Move: The Zero Point Breakthrough and later the X-Burner.
  • Single Girl Seeks Most Popular Guy: A gender inverted example. He admires Kyoko for how perfect she is.
  • The Slacker: Back before Reborn came into his life, he regularly did poorly in school. But since he couldn't do anything right, he just felt like he didn't have to try, and often came home in the middle of the day.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: He starts out as an inverted example, having low self-esteem and being easily discouraged from trying his best in almost anything, though he does have the stereotypical Shonen Hair down. He plays the trope straighter as the story progresses and he faces more dangerous enemies that may potentially harm his friends. He can become quite determined when he is in Hyper Dying Will Mode, and eventually he gains more confidence in himself as well.
  • Stronger Than They Look: He grows into this. Despite looking relatively the same as he did in the beginning, it turns out that he can take pretty much any life-threatening danger and come out completely unscathed.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He takes after his mother a lot more than his father in terms of appearance; he also bears quite a bit of resemblance with Primo despite being generations apart.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes:
    • His Hyper Dying Will Mode turns his eyes golden orange in contrast to his brown eyes.
    • Manga-wise, his eyes actually are a golden color, as compared to his anime self who has brown eyes that turn orange in his Hyper Dying Will Mode.
  • Tareme Eyes: They make him look like a girl. This changes into Tsurime Eyes he goes into Hyper Dying Will Mode, albeit it's somewhat subtle.
  • Team Mom: He definitely qualifies, as he plays the role of The Heart more than The Leader and he constantly worries over other people’s (friend or foe) welfare.
  • Tender Tears: Most of the time when he is the butt of the jokes.
  • This Loser Is You: 'No Good' Tsuna, at least at the very beginning. He slightly grows out of it. Slightly because he is still the 'No-Good' kid from before, but with friends and allies that will help him in times of need.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: Played straight until he actually killed Byakuran, who had become pretty inhuman by that point. And then double subverted when Byakuran is revealed to still be alive.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Goes from 'No Good' Tsuna to capable of kicking plenty of ass.
    • Moments like this are spread out during the Daily Life arc of all places, such as Tsuna deciding to continue competing in the volleyball tournament upon learning that other students were injured as well, attempting to protect Kyoko from getting attacked by a lion, and saving Haru and Lambo from falling off a bridge. Which was all done without the need of Dying Will bullets.
    • Confidently affirming his desire to defeat Mukuro Rokudo and receiving the X-Gloves and the Criticism Shot, which allows him to activate Hyper Dying Will Mode.
  • True Companions:
    • For the most part this applies to a good portion of Tsuna's mafia family (save for Hibari and Mukuro who are evil teammates at best and want nothing to do with Tsuna outside of their own agenda). Especially with Gokudera, Yamamoto, and Ryohei who can be seen as his best friends and most reliable guardians.
    • Kyoko and Haru can be seen as this as well, they are never involved in any of the action that occurs in the series and always wait on the sidelines, though they are viewed as Tsuna's driving force during battles and he wants to protect them no matter what. The two of them are typically involved in the daily life moments that occur in the series.
    • Enma Kozato almost immediately becomes this upon meeting Tsuna for the first time, the two become fast friends after realizing the two are very similar to one another, both being considered "losers" because of their bad grades and are a victim to bullying. Which only makes things hit harder after Enma turns out to be an enemy to the Vongola family that seeks revenge and attempts to kill his guardians on Simon Island, fortunately all is forgiven at the end of the Inheritance Ceremony Arc and the two revert back to being friends again.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: Tsuna is very forgiving, to the point that many of his allies besides Kyoko, Yamamoto, and Chrome had all once tried to attack or kill him.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Tsuna has taken down a group of wanted criminals, the world's greatest assassination squad, a mafia boss hellbent on taking over the multiverse, an illusionist capable of controlling people's bodies, and a powerful law enforcement organization controlled by the mafia, yet still is treated as a loser in the eyes of people like Xanxus and Byakuran. His Guardians and allies (save for Hibari) actually think quite highly of him and see him as a good boss.
  • Unexpected Successor: Tsuna is a random Japanese kid who got dumped with being heir to the most powerful mafia family in Italy (if not the world), just because his ancestor happened to be its first boss and the other prospective heirs died bloody deaths on their own.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Delivers one to Mukuro for selfishly ignoring Chrome after kicking her out of the Kokuyo Gang and refusing to give her organs, though Mukuro justifies this by saying that he has been trying to give Chrome illusion organs but she intentionally has been rejecting them.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: Downplayed. He clearly holds some aversion towards the idea of his female friends fighting for the mafia. A lot of Tsuna’s mannerisms seem to point towards him having the mindset that 'all women must be protected at all costs' as well.

"Ciaossu."

The world's strongest hitman, a gun-toting baby that serves for the Vongola Famiglia. As the most trusted ally of the Vongola Ninth, he was personally requested to travel to Japan in order to serve as the home tutor for Tsuna and train him to become the next generation of the Vongola, however his teaching methods prove to be quite unorthodox and tend to result in harm at the expense of Tsuna.

He gets off on making flawless headshots and threatening people with his trusty gun, which he commonly uses to help activate Tsuna’s Dying Will Mode.

Reborn is an Arcobaleno and currently holds the Sun Pacifier, therefore he is actually an adult cursed with the body of an infant, but refrains from speaking about this secret to many of his allies.

  • Achilles in His Tent: Can't get out of the base thanks to the Non-Trinisette policy on the atmosphere during the Future Arc.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Calls Nana "Maman" as a sign of respect to her. The girls usually call him "Reborn-chan" which he doesn't mind.
  • The Ageless: His curse prevents him from aging properly and permanently keeps him in an infant state, and considering that he's been a baby long enough to train a teenage Dino (who is in his early twenties), possibly become a mathematician, have four girlfriends, and be a famous celebrity in a mafia resort, then it's clear that he's been in this form for a long time.
  • Anime Hair: While it usually can't be seen, Reborn has spiky hair to rival Tsuna's underneath that hat of his.
  • Anti-Hero: He's not above putting Tsuna's life in serious danger if that means making him stronger. That and he's an asshole (at least towards Tsuna).
  • Art Evolution: His body proportions looked much more similar to that of a real baby in the earlier chapters, with more circular shaped eyes, thicker sideburns, and bigger feet. In the later parts of the series, his design has become so exaggerated that he barely resembles a real-life infant.
  • Artistic Age: Even though Reborn's a two-year old baby, he's only 40cm (about a foot tall), making him a whole foot shorter than a regular infant of his age would be, something that the series constantly shows as he is able to casually sit on Tsuna's shoulder or head.
  • Badass Bystander: Will just stand and give lots of exposition whenever there is a fight happening, since he is usually forbidden to fight due to circumstances (Ninth's orders, non-trinisette policy). As it is, if he did join a fight, it would have ended quickly.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Reborn's default outfit is a snazzy suit and he is said to be the strongest of the Arcobaleno. His adult form is also an example.
  • Badass Teacher: Has built up a reputation of being the strongest hitman in the world, capable of using multiple different weapons, is able to speak different languages including Japanese and Italian, is a possible mathematician, and has had the responsibility of training many mafia bosses under his belt.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Harming Yuni is this for him.
    • Doubting his skills as a hitman is enough to provoke him, in Reborn's eyes, he is the greatest hitman in the world and no one can tell him otherwise.
    • He doesn't take kindly to people who try to interrupt his sleep and even sets up active grenades around him so that no one will wake him.
    • Anything related to his Arcobaleno curse seems to provoke him; even Tsuna admits that he was surprised to see Reborn visibly angry after seeing that Bermuda possessed a Clear Pacifier.
  • Beware the Cute Ones: Seriously. Even Haru finds him cute in an early chapter, but he will not hesitate to threaten to shoot someone if you piss him off.
  • Boom, Headshot!: His M.O. He's so good at it that he was able to shoot Tsuna in the head while he was sucker-punched by Xanxus in their fight.
  • Bowdlerization: In the manga, Reborn is always seen using an actual gun as his main choice of weapon (a Czechoslovakian semi-automatic pistol). The anime changes this into Reborn's pet chameleon transforming into a gun and shooting bullets that turn into flames before shooting someone.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: When Tsuna fails to recognize Reborn's adult form, Reborn (who earlier claimed to have not seen the mysterious man) makes sure to point out that the man was cool.
  • Cassandra Truth: He actually mentions early on in the anime that he's an adult; Tsuna (justifiably) thinks he's just messing around.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "Ciaossu", a combination of the Italian greeting "ciao" and the casual male Japanese greeting "ossu". Which is later revealed to be him trying to say "Chaos" but cannot because of his underdeveloped vocal cords. Curiously enough, the Latin American Spanish dub changed it to just "ciao" instead.
    • Says "ciao ciao" when saying goodbye to someone.
  • Character Tics: Most noticeable in the anime, he has a habit of playing with his side-burns. Luce takes notice and even points out that it’s his most charming trait as well.
  • Character Title: If you've been paying attention, you'll notice his name is the last word on the title.
  • Chick Magnet: He claims to be very popular with women, which can be seen with the many females that fawn over how cute he is throughout the story, and apparently had three girlfriends prior to meeting Bianchi. It's also implied that he had these lovers after he was cursed.
  • Cool Teacher: To Yamamoto in the Future Arc (in stark contrast to the way he treats Tsuna and Dino).
  • Cursed with Awesome: Was turned into an infant, but in exchange gained sweet new powers and a pet.
  • Deuteragonist: While Tsuna is the main protagonist of the series, Reborn is definitely the deuteragonist of the series, and one of the most recurring characters in both the manga and anime.
  • Enfante Terrible: He's not actually an infant, but he's still a dangerous assassin and a ruthless mentor to Tsuna.
  • Hates Being Touched: Physically harms Tsuna when he tries and rebukes Haru's request for a hug. He doesn't mind when Yamamoto does it, which Tsuna is annoyed by.
  • Head Pet: Leon, who can even transform into a gun.
  • Hitman with a Heart: This aspect of his is heavily downplayed and not very noticeable at first, but after getting to know him a little more he is definitely not as bad of a person as he makes himself out to be.
  • Hypocrite: He always pushes Tsuna to succeed and never lets him give up. Reborn meanwhile has long since given up on finding a cure for his curse. He even flat out orders Tsuna to not try to save him when it appears that he and the other Arcobaleno will die.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: His special attack "Chaos Shot" allows him to hit the opponent even after the bullet has been shot into the ground.
  • Is That What He Told You?: Lots of miscommunications happen when Reborn explains things to other characters, to Tsuna's exasperation.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Reborn's shown to have very cruel, harsh, and downright sadistic teaching methods that are intended to toughen Tsuna up, yet often leave him battered, humiliated, or both. And despite his insistence on keeping women and children out of the affairs of the mafia, he has zero qualms beating up Lambo despite only being five years old and hitting Kyoko on the head with a mallet. However, it is shown that he still cares deeply for the Vongola Family and has a softer side towards individuals like Haru and Yuni.
  • Jerkass to One: While Reborn isn't necessarily nice to other characters either, he tends to treat Tsuna extremely harshly, often kicking him in the face for any kind of opposition towards him. However, It's slightly downplayed since it is Played for Laughs.
  • Karma Houdini: He never receives any repercussions for the constant physical abuse and humiliation that he forces Tsuna to endure.
  • Mad Mathematician: Apparently he once was a mathematician with a master's degree in his past, but at the same time it could have just been a similar look-alike.
  • Meaningful Name: In his monologues, he was unable to accept his body when he got his curse so he took a long exile in order to accept it. In doing so, he asked Shamal to erase every existence of him. In a sense, this makes him "Reborn" in a new life.
  • Men Are Tough: Most of his excuses and reasoning for why he puts Tsuna through his hellish training/torture comprises of this saying in some way. Going so far as to tell Tsuna that the only way he’ll ever be able to get Kyoko’s attention is to "Man Up".
  • Mentor Mascot: The mentor to Tsuna and the unofficial mascot of the series.
  • Mr. Exposition: 80% of the plot exposition is given by him, after all.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • When Daemon Spade begins to give Tsuna a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, Reborn actually becomes visibly panicky and nervous about Tsuna's well-being, even wanting to step forward and help Tsuna. The Vendicare prison guards tell him to back down, which results in him being angry that he can't help Tsuna.
    • He gets visibly angry and starts yelling at the Vindice when they reveal a clear pacifier; Tsuna notes that it's the first time he's ever seen Reborn so bothered.
  • Odd Couple: Paired up with Ryohei during the Inheritance Trials. He also has a close friendship with the more laid-back (and much nicer) Yamamoto.
  • Omniscient Morality License: Before Reborn eventually Took a Level in Kindness, his Training from Hell to Tsuna was very literal, as he would completely disregard the latter's physical and mental health, and private life to make him a stronger fighter while withholding any explanation, though the training always manages to pay off. And Tsuna wouldn't have to fight all the mafioso in the first place if he wasn't Vongola Decimo, a title he never agreed with. Tsuna doesn't get to talk back to Reborn about it until near the end of the series.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Tsuna almost tears his hair out for being the only one able to tell. And then flipped when Reborn temporarily resumes his real form, as Tsuna is the only one who can't tell it's him.
  • Parental Substitute: To Tsuna. Reborn, spartan training and sadistic tendencies aside, did more to raise Tsuna over the course of the series (which, in-universe, is at most a year) than Iemitsu ever did over the course of Tsuna's entire life. Additionally, in the final chapter Reborn actually allows Tsuna to choose whether or not he wants to become a mafia boss, unlike his father who forces the responsibility onto him simply because of his heritage. Fanon frequently emphasizes this, canon lampshades it, and even the series' wiki points it out.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Reborn is the greatest hitman in the world yet he never kills anyone in the series. Furthermore, he never mentions his targets and is disgusted by the ruthless antics of Tsuna's enemies in spite of saying that he enjoyed his assignments with the Arcobaleno. Considering his profession...
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: Temporarily turns back to normal in order to help Tsuna in the Representative Battle.
  • Secondary Character Title: Somewhat. Even though Reborn is a major character, this is Tsuna's story, not his.
  • Series Mascot: Easily one of the most recognizable characters in the franchise and is the character who regularly appears the most in promotional material, he seems to share this role alongside Lambo, I-Pin, and the other Arcobalenos.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Somewhat hints at this with Tsuna and Kyoko, he often forcibly tries to make Tsuna ask out or confess his feelings to Kyoko, with them usually failing. Even Tsuna's first use of Dying Will Mode was to ask out Kyoko.
    • For Haru and Tsuna as well. Since he considers her a 'mafia wife candidate', and on occasion even teases their relationship.
  • Sniper Pistol: Sometimes uses it when he is far away from the group.
  • Snot Bubble: When he sleeps. He even exploits it with a fake one to make Tsuna think he's fallen asleep after Tsuna tells him that he doesn't intend to let him die. Kind of puts all those times where he conveniently falls asleep (notably when Bianchi wants him to eat something) into perspective.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Reborn is able to fluently communicate with insects such as beetles and dragonflies, he uses them to spy and gather information.
  • Training from Hell: His favorite way of training Tsuna and Dino, even in non-combat situations to the point that both flinch when the word training is said by him.
  • Trickster Mentor: More noticeable in the earlier chapters, where he intentionally stirs up trouble for Tsuna and company as a way of training him, much to Tsuna's distress.
  • Trigger-Happy: Will threaten to shoot Tsuna if he complains about anything. The same with Dino.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Ninth Vongola Boss, and it's said that Reborn is the Ninth's most trusted hitman.
  • Vague Age: Outside of being two in Arcobaleno years, his actual age has never been confirmed. He seems to have been cursed somewhere around his twenties or thirties and has lived long enough to make a name for himself as a renowned hitman and celebrity in the mafia world. The only real indication of his age is that he was cursed around the same time as Luche, who passed away two generations prior to the start of the series.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Type 1 with Colonello; they regularly argue, headbutt each other, and deny that they're close, which Tsuna chalks up to them being childhood friends.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Despite apparently being "chivalrous" and thinking that Kyoko and Haru should be protected from the mafia, he has absolutely zero problems knocking a bullet out of Kyoko's head with a giant mallet and slapping Bianchi (who was possessed by Mukuro) for attacking her brother.
  • Would Hurt a Child:

    Hayato Gokudera

"I still don't like myself, but that's not my weakness, because the tenth's right hand man that I'm aiming for is far higher than my current me. There's so many things I'm missing, so I train, stretch myself, and scheme."
The Tenth Generation Storm Guardian. At first, it seemed as if Gokudera was just your average, foreign delinquent. He even came equipped with you standard-issue cigarettes and the crowd of admiring classmates. But then he was beat by Tsuna, and of course, Defeat Means Friendship, so he started his pursuit of being the "Tenth's" right-hand man. This didn't mean that he would be nice to other people, though. But when it really comes down to it, his aggressive tendencies have somewhat pacified due to his interactions with those other people.
  • Action Bomb: His Vongola Gear turns Uri into this, who then shrinks afterward.
  • Ambiguously Bi: He has considerable Ho Yay towards Tsuna (though it's not clear if it's really love or just Undying Loyalty). He also blushed and had a nosebleed upon seeing Lal Mirch (a beautiful woman) naked and gets a couple of ship teases with Shitt. P.
  • Anti-Hero: He's a pretty big jerk towards anyone who isn't Tsuna. But he's not so bad after all.
  • Arm Cannon: Uses one as part of Systema C.A.I. He can use dynamite as bullets, which he can convert the explosion into several attacks.
  • Asleep in Class: Usually sleeps in class as he's already gotten higher education and only stays in school to guard Tsuna. This usually gets him in trouble.
  • Berserk Button: Even the slightest interactions that strangers have with Tsuna is enough to make him angry. Hurting him will also make him explode with rage and let out a storm of attacks.
  • Big Brother Bully: Though not Lambo's brother by blood, they have this dynamic as members of the Vongola Family.
  • Bodyguard Crush: He proclaims himself and the Tenth's "Right-Hand Man" and is with him almost 24/7. But his interactions with his boss is more than what a bodyguard should be like.
  • Bowdlerization: In the manga, Gokudera smokes cigarettes and is even shown to use them to light his dynamite sticks. The anime completely removes the idea of him even using cigarettes, with there being no given explanation on how he is able to light his cigarettes so fast. His title in the manga, "Smokin' Bomb Hayato" was also changed to "Hurricane Bomb Hayato".
  • But Not Too Foreign: His mother was half-Japanese, half-Italian. This is a source of his angst when he was younger, and the reason why he ran away from his family.
  • Butt-Monkey: If his boss is not around, then expect him to be the one to be the center of jokes.
  • Character Development:
    • Starts from distrusting everyone and only trusting himself thanks to his past, he begins to open up to other people thanks to his interactions with them. Shown best in the Inheritance Arc, where he was able to entrust Tsuna's life to the Shimon Family while thinking of ways to defend him. He also goes from someone willing to throw his life away for his boss to someone who will fight to save everyone, including himself.
    • In the beginning his devotion to Tsuna was comically obsequious and mostly disingenuous due to being in debt to Tsuna for saving his life. He still behaved very sternly and even Tsuna admitted that he was scary from time to time. After Chapter 61, Gokudera remains devoted to Tsuna and begins to value him as a friend as well, which is definitely shown after he gives up the Storm Ring during his fight against Belphegor in order to live to fight another day and watch the fireworks again.
    • He starts to value the concept of family more throughout the series. He outright hates Yamamoto in the beginning and sees him as an annoyance because of their friendly rivalry of being Tsuna's right-hand man, but softens up to him more after Yamamoto calls him out for pushing everyone away during the Future Arc, and even more after he expresses anger at Yamamoto being injured by Kaoru and states that he would never forgive him.
  • Character Exaggeration: While Gokudera is very loyal to Tsuna in both the anime and the manga, the anime tends to play up his devotion even more, even once including a scene where he sprouts a dog tail and ears when he thinks he sees Tsuna's "aura".
  • Chick Magnet: Many girls in his class are infatuated with him because all girls want bad boys. He doesn't appreciate the attention.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He sticks to Tsuna like no one else does and constantly tries to get people killed if they start becoming "overly close" with Tsuna (and this is done in a comedic way). He becomes unreasonably jealous of anyone who is close to Tsuna, and is even shown watching Tsuna and getting incredibly pissed at Yamamoto for being so friendly with him. Then there's his violent reaction when Chrome kisses Tsuna's cheek.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Declared his undying devotion to Tsuna after the latter defeated the former by going into "Dying Will" mode. Gokudera was about to die from setting off his own dynamite, and Tsuna saved his life.
  • Deflector Shields: His Systema C.A.I have deflector shields that he can use to block enemy firepower. He can even use it as a floating device.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: He changes between foolish and responsible to his half-sister Bianchi depending on whether the situation is comedic or not. But in the future, he is the foolish one to Bianchi's responsible one, thanks to his hotheadedness and stubbornness.
  • Friend to All Children: Subverted. In one chapter, Futa ranked Gokudera as the fittest to become a kindergarten school teacher (out of 82,203 people), claiming that Gokudera is ranked number 2 out of 82,203 people that like kids. Everyone is shocked, and Gokudera himself starts wondering if maybe he unconsciously liked them after all. It turns out that it was because Futa's ranking system went wonky because of the rainy weather...
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Fitting with his green eyes. He is this for his boss Tsuna where he gets incredibly jealous of anyone who gets along well with him.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Of Tsuna, where he will praise every small thing Tsuna does with such aplomb that Tsuna will get embarrassed by it.
  • Hidden Eyes: Happens whenever he sees his sister.
  • Hot-Blooded: Whenever a situation happens, the first thing he will do is threaten the offender with dynamites. Combine this with his Leeroy Jenkins trait, and he creates more problems for Tsuna, which G points out to him in his test.
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: It's difficult spotting Hayato without some "bad boy" accessories, like chains, fingerless gloves, flashy belts, spikes, studs, and earrings (in his future appearance). He and Mukuro seem to have similar tastes in clothing, ironically enough.
  • Improbable Weapon User: He's a master in using flying dynamite as a weapon, and even upgrades them to act like mini rockets that trace his opponents.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: His treatment of Yamamoto and to the lesser extent, the other guardians, can be boiled down to this. He always tries to outdo anyone who he thinks is stronger or better than him and tries to put down other's achievements, but deep down, he knows that he is not good enough and is afraid that Tsuna will rely on others than him.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Only when Tsuna goes into dying will mode and defeats Gokudera does he drop his accusations of Tsuna being a weak loser and take to the idea of Tsuna being the tenth Vongola boss... and he becomes quite determined to be Tsuna's right-hand man.
  • I Owe You My Life: Although this isn't the sole reason for his devotion to Tsuna, it was the trigger that made him see Tsuna as the boss he would like to follow.
  • It's All My Fault: Has a habit of blaming himself whenever Tsuna is in trouble or hurt. This is sometimes Played for Laughs.
  • Mirror Character: With Gamma. Both are very attached to their boss, with Gokudera fighting to protect Tsuna and Gamma just going along with the Millifiore Family in hope that Yuni will come back someday. Both are also prepared to sacrifice their lives for their bosses' sake as well. Interestingly, both team up in the last battle with Byakuran.
  • The Nicknamer: He gives almost everyone he dislikes some derogatory nickname, such as "Baseball Freak" for Yamamoto, "Stupid Cow" for Lambo, and "Turf-top" and "Lawnhead" for Ryohei.
  • No Smoking: The anime cuts out his smoking habits. This has the side effect of his bombs lighting up by itself, which Tsuna lampshades early on.
  • The Paranoiac: Present Gokudera meets the requirements for this trope as Tsuna's self-proclaimed right hand- he tends to hold grudges (particularly against Yamamoto and their former enemies regardless of how much they've proven themselves), is constantly suspicious of everyone they meet (and spends a lot of the early arcs convinced Yamamoto wants his place as Tsuna's right-hand man), is a jerk to just about anyone who isn't Tsuna, fulfills the "clingy" aspect of the fifth point and expects others to listen to him because he's Tsuna's right-hand, and holds self-importance, again as Tsuna's right hand, something Yamamoto calls him out on. That's criteria points 2-6 that he meets. He's also got the Hair-Trigger Temper and recklessness associated with the trope, as well as being the quickest to resort to violence. In fact, part of his Inheritance Test was G calling him out on most of these points.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: Whenever he's doing something particularly smart, he pulls his glasses and a chalkboard to go with it out of nowhere.
  • Red Baron: "Smoking Bomb" Hayato in the manga, "Hurricane Bomb" Hayato in the anime.
  • Saying Too Much: Gokudera's habit of calling Tsuna nothing except "Jyuudaime" (which roughly translates to Tenth Boss in English), talking about him a lot, and talking about being his right hand, has frequently compromised Tsuna's safety. Notably, it's entirely Gokudera's fault Gamma (and thus, the Millefiore) learned very quickly about Tsuna being alive, because he gets into an argument with Yamamoto regarding Tsuna. It's also his fault the Varia learned almost immediately who Xanxus would have to eliminate to become the Tenth.
  • Say My Name: One of the worst perpetrators of this. There are even compilations of him saying this on Youtube that can go on forever.
  • Shirtless Scene: When he and Tsuna fell off in the water after seeing Lal Mirch naked.
  • Short Range Guy, Long Range Guy: The long-range one to his Boss's fist fighting attacks, save for the X-Burner. He is also the long-ranged guy to Yamamoto, who focuses on getting close to an enemy.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Considers Yamamoto as his rival for Tsuna's affections, but if push comes to shove, both are willing to defend each other.
  • The Smart Guy: You wouldn't know looking at him, but he is ridiculously smart. Hell, no one else would teach a kid how to swim with MIT-level arithmetic.
  • Smoking Is Cool: In the manga, where he is a chain smoker and uses cigarettes to light up his bombs. Later in the manga, there aren't many chapters where Gokudera uses a cigarette or his original dynamite sticks. His Vongola Gear later upgrades to include an igniter that looks like a cigarette at least. He stops smoking during the Ten Year Later arc when he and the others were stuck underground in a bunker for long stretches of time. Probably had to give it up out of necessity.
  • Sprouting Ears: Whenever he's really happy, usually because of Tsuna's praises, he grows doggy ears and a tail. His werecat counterpart from the "Monster Tamer Tsuna" skits does this, too.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Albeit it's murky if he does have a crush on him. He's constantly following Tsuna around and surprising him by showing up where Tsuna doesn't expect him. Also, in chapter 292 Enma leaves Tsuna's house in the middle of the night only to be immediately encountered by Gokudera approaching the house with a flashlight. Gokudera wonders why Enma is not guarding Tsuna and Enma replies that he left his school supplies at the guest house and leaves. Gokudera expresses annoyance at this and proudly states to himself "I knew it. The only one who can manage to guard the Tenth 24/7 is me!!!"
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: With Shitt. P. Both think of each other as a UMA and have been observing each other for this reason.
  • Taking the Bullet: Took Chikusa's killer needles in order to protect Tsuna. This crippled him in the fight against the Kokuyo Gang.
  • Those Two Guys: Shares this with Yamamoto, where they are usually shown to be together, much to his irritation.
  • Troubled, but Cute: A smoker, delinquent, and lover of high explosives. Naturally, the girls go wild for him. The only break in his Troubled, but Cute personality is that he turns all mushy and affectionate for Tsuna.
  • Undying Loyalty: One of the things that define him the most is his loyalty to Tsuna. Hell, his entire character song is dedicated to his undying loyalty for Tsuna.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He was pampered by his father and half-sister Bianchi as shown in his flashbacks and quite respectful to everyone. But after learning that his mother died in an accident and that he is a bastard of the family, he ran away from home to be a freelance hitman. He certainly lost his sweetness after being rejected in the mafia world too many times.
  • Walking Armory: His Systema C.A.I allow him to carry shields that he can use to defend himself, has his arm cannon for attacks, and carries around a stack of dynamite on his body.
  • Weak, but Skilled: His strengths lie mainly in his intelligence and his use of techniques.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Because of being forced to eat her poison cooking as a child, Gokudera instinctively suffers from a stomachache in Bianchi's presence (though they eventually realize they can work around that by making Bianchi wear goggles).

"Didn't I say this before? The person who would treat baseball as something more important than friends is no more."
The Tenth Generation Rain Guardian. You're a baseball star. The jock. Everyone loves and admires you. How could your life get any better? Give the kid a sword, and make that sword a katana, then teach him an awesome way to use it! And with that, you get the Badass known as Yamamoto. You wouldn't tell how badass he is by looking, because it's always sunny in Yamamotoville. The kid's been a constant, and welcome presence in Tsuna's family. And with a little help, he's taken more levels in badass than anyone else. Gokudera hates him.
  • The Ace: Star athlete, swordsman prodigy, natural-born assassin, incredibly Nice Guy, and generally just great enough at everything he does that even the likes of Squalo and Hibari acknowledge his talent. Reborn even acknowledges this, stating that if Future Yamamoto had his Vongola Ring with Shigure Kintoki, he would have been able to solo the whole Millefiore Family.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the anime adaptation, Yamamoto appears as early as the first episode of the series, despite not until Chapter 5 in the manga.
  • Badass Normal: At the start of the series, Yamamoto did not have any special fighting techniques, but was still considered the second strongest at Namimori Middle School, judging by Fuuta's ranking.
  • Berserk Button: Not to the extent of Gokudera, but hurting Tsuna in any way is an easy way for an enemy to let out his dangerous side.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Chapter 325, Yamamoto comes back from a near death experience that took him out roughly 30 chapters ago to save the ass of the dude who put him in the hospital in the first place. And it was awesome.
  • Book Dumb: Subverted; he tends to get low test scores like Tsuna, but it's because he's so busy with baseball that he sleeps in class and doesn't bother to crack open his books.
  • Chick Magnet: A lot of the girls in his class are smitten with him. He doesn't understand why they like to give him free lunches though.
  • Cool Sword: His Yamamoto Bat that can turn into a katana when he swings it at 300 MPH. Then later he gains Shigure Kintoki from his father as well, which looks like an ordinary bamboo sword that turns to a katana when used with the Shigure Soen Ryu sword style.
  • Death Glare: He can give a good one whenever he turns serious.
  • Driven to Suicide: In his debut chapter, he attempts to commit suicide by jumping off the school building after breaking his arm and believing that he would never be able to play baseball again. Luckily, Tsuna interfered and stopped him. The anime cuts this character moment out.
  • Dual Wielding: And triple wielding, and quadruple wielding.
  • Easily Forgiven: Has a habit of doing this; his friends list includes two guys who attempted to murder him, and he regards Byakuran as 'an old acquaintance'.
  • Fan of Underdog: Is this to Tsuna ever since he saw him in his Dying Will mode. Even more so after he is saved by him.
  • Fantastic Fighting Style: Shigure Soen Ryu is this, with practitioners only seeing it once before they are left on their own. Then he combines this with his Box weapons to fight. In the end, he ends up having a katana and three short swords in his techniques.
  • A Friend in Need: At the beginning of the story, he almost committed suicide when he thought he'd never be able to play baseball again. But the moment a friend is in danger he's happy to sacrifice whatever it takes in order to save them, be it his arm or his entire baseball career.
  • Friendly Enemy:
    • With Squalo. He tried to get to know Squalo better during their first fight, was distressed when it seemed Squalo had been eaten, was delighted to see him alive and well after the time skip and seemed genuinely devastated when Squalo was rumored to be killed. On Squalo's side, he seems to act like a Tsundere towards Yamamoto, often calling him names and even at one point knocking him unconscious. However, when he heard that the Yamamoto of the future stopped his swordsmanship in order to pursue baseball, Squalo went out of his way to create DVDs of one hundred battles in hopes of getting Yamamoto interested in the sword again. He also become Yamamoto's teacher later on.
    • With Kaoru as well. He befriends him right off the bat despite his appearance, and continues to regard him as a friend even after Kaoru attempted to (literally) tear him in half and nearly crippled him for life. On Kaoru's part he sacrificed himself to take a blow for Yamamoto, betraying his own Famiglia by doing so.
  • Friend to All Children: He's very nice to Lambo and I-Pin, gets along well with Colonello when they're paired together in the anime, and has a noticeably close relationship with Reborn (who usually gets around by perching on Yamamoto's shoulder). Though the latter two might count as subversions given that they're adults in kids' bodies.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has one on his chin in the future.
  • Hard Work Fallacy: He nearly tried to kill himself over it early in the manga, but Tsuna talked him out of it.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Yamamoto is very proficient with swords, just below Squalo's level and even able to copy some of his abilities.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Of Tsuna, but not to the extent of Gokudera. Pretty much anything Tsuna does will impress him, no matter how small it is.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Thank you, Tsuna. You stopped him from killing himself over a broken arm...in the manga, anyway.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Being a specialist in a Japanese sword style, this was inevitable. He has his bat, which can turn into a katana at 300 km/h, and the Shigure Kintoki, a family heirloom.
  • Keet: Always has a cheerful disposition and a smile that can wipe away any doubts.
  • The Lancer: Is this alongside Gokudera for Tsuna, but he is the straighter example, having more attack focused abilities compared to Godudera's defensive abilities.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Whenever he faces a strong enemy, he stops smiling and will give out a Death Glare to his enemies.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Both father and son are very nice and a little spacey, with a hidden core of badass.
  • Making a Splash: Uses the water around him in most fights to boost his Shigure Soen Ryu techniques. Makes sense since he is the rain attribute.
  • Master Swordsman: In the future, where he is one of the best swordsmen in the mafia world.
  • Missing Mom: Nothing is shown about his mother.
  • Nice Guy: Try insanely nice guy. He forgives anyone who did anything wrong to him, such as his fights with Genkishi where he tried to save the latter from dying, and is usually the voice of reason of the group.
  • One Head Taller: Than most of the cast.
  • One-Note Cook: He can make delicious sushi as he helps out his father with his business, but he can't make anything else, as shown in the future arc.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In the anime, losing the game of Choice leads to him becoming impatient and outright ruthless in battle. It ends with him being the only person to lose their Guardian trial, though he gets himself together when Agetsu lets him retake it.
  • The Pollyanna: An eternal optimist, he's incredibly laid back, especially for a shounen character, and is usually cheerful and smiling, even when he's fighting for his life.
  • Put on a Bus: He was sent to the hospital by Kaoru, and didn't come back until roughly 30 chapters later.
  • Razor Wind: His Vongola Gear allows him to use the 12th Stance of Shigure Soen Ryu which uses two attacks, one of which happens to be this type of attack that can also "sniff people out" (Sadachi: Kirisame (Brazen Left Blade: Drizzle)).
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: Delivers one to Gokudera while they're battling Gamma, regarding how little Gokudera seems to care for the other Guardians, despite being Tsuna's right hand nominally making him the leader of the Guardians. He regrets it later, though.
  • The Reliable One: He is the one that Tsuna relies on to make any situations feel lighter, which he does without thinking. He is also one of the Vongola Family's aces, where almost all of his fights are complete wins. This is one of the reasons why Gokudera cannot stand him.
  • Secret-Keeper: Reborn told him the secret of the Arcobaleno roughly 150 chapters before it became public knowledge. Ironic since he's usually one of the ones who know the least about what's going on.
  • Selective Obliviousness: He spends the entire series believing he's actually a part of one big LARP. "Oh, are you playing mafia again? This looks fun, let me join in!"
  • Short Range Guy, Long Range Guy: Has this dynamic with Gokudera, as part of being Tsuna's lancers. He uses swords while the other uses bombs and an Arm Cannon to attack at long range.
  • Signature Move: All of the Shigure Soen Ryu styles, but particularly the 8th Stance Shinotsuku Ame (Pelting Rain).
  • Spam Attack: His Vongola Gear allows him to use the 12th Stance of Shigure Soen Ryu that uses two attacks, one of which is this type of attack (Udachi: Kirisame (Brazen Right Blade: Drizzle)). It involves multiple swallows made up of Dying Will Flames of the Rain flying up and piercing an opponent.
  • Those Two Guys: Shares this with Gokudera, where they are usually shown to be together.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Like Tsuna; he deliberately uses the blunt side of his sword to avoid fatal blows. It's a sign of how furious he is with Daemon Spade's manipulations that he doesn't hesitate to say he'll kill him.
  • Time Stands Still: Not really, but his Aggregate Art: Jiunoka's (Rainy Metamorphosis) tranquil power is so intense anyone caught in it stands completely still.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Once he gets his training and Vongola Gear, he becomes even stronger than he already was.
  • Undying Loyalty: Tsuna certainly gained his trust and loyalty after he saved his life.
  • The Worf Effect: Gets hit with this in his first fight with all his enemies as a way to show off the enemy's fighting prowess and to point out how he is not up to their level. Squalo humiliated him in their first encounter, Genkishi defeated him with his illusions while Kaoru ambushes him after he accidentally found out about the Shimon Family's plans.

"I'm also a man! One punch and I can move on!"
The Tenth Generation Sun Guardian. Ryohei is Extreme. His (empty) club is extreme. His mentor is extreme. Everything he does is extreme. The guy is always training, extremely hard, and he gets even more extreme when he doesn't train. He may seem like something of an extreme virtual airhead sometimes, but there seems to be some kind of extreme logic to his madness. He seems to always be trying to recruit Tsuna into his extreme boxing club. He's just not taking no for an answer.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Tsuna calls him "onii-san", despite Ryohei not being his brother. But this might be because he's the big brother of his crush Kyoko, so Tsuna sees him somewhat as a "brother-in-law".
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Ryohei's Vongola Gear power allows him to absorb the damage of his opponent's attacks and reflect it onto his opponent. However, this requires him to allow himself to get hit and if the opponent hits too hard, Ryohei could go down without throwing a punch.
  • Berserk Button: Involving the women and children in mafia affairs is enough to provoke him, especially when it regards his sister Kyoko. He even once punches Tsuna in the face after he tells Kyoko about the mafia.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Chrome after her fight with Glo Xina and is the one who brought her to the Vongola Base.
  • Birds of a Feather: With his fellow classmate Aoba Kouyou, to the point that both have similar outlooks in life and have the same level of intelligence.
  • Book Dumb: Equal or maybe even worse than Tsuna. He is always living to the extreme and is very focused on boxing and working out, which leaves little room for studying.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Quite loud and can destroy walls with just a punch.
  • Boxing Battler: His main style of fighting.
  • Boxing Kangaroo: The wounds on Kangaryu are from the sparring sessions she has with his future self.
  • Catchphrase: "TO THE EXTREME!!!"
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: All it took was the right sort of training and he was strong enough to destroy an entire gym building with one punch.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's rather Book Dumb, but he's still one of the strongest at Namimori Middle School even before he becomes the Sun Guardian.
  • Death Glare: Can certainly give a scary one when he is fighting an opponent.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: A couple of the manga splash pages have him point out oddities like Hibari's catch phrase or Chrome's name.
  • Dumb Muscle: Since he always lives to the extreme and always focuses on his boxing club. Ryohei is one of the least smart guardians, with him taking 5 hours just to learn what happened in the future.
  • Elemental Punch: The "Sunshine Counter" attack that comes with his new Vongola Gear lets his punches shoot concentrated blasts of Sun Flames.
  • Fan of Underdog: Not to the extent of Gokudera and Yamamoto, but this guy keeps on insisting that Tsuna should join his boxing club.
  • Forgetful Jones: Resolved in the future by actually taking notes.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Crossing his left eyebrow. It's a scar from the time he defended Kyoko from his bullies.
  • Handwraps of Awesome: His handswraps are the trope image.
  • Healing Factor: His Sun Flames speed up his natural healing process. He also has a Sun Trowel that can heal others' wounds.
  • Heroic Build: Has the most muscular build of all the guardians. Fitting as he is a boxer-in-training.
  • Heroic Resolve: Reborn states that Ryohei is living with his Dying Will every day, that's why the Dying Will bullet has no effect on him.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's fast and can keep up with Lussuria, who is a trained Muay Thai practitioner. And he can hit really hard as well, to the point where walls feel like nothing but paper to him.
  • Made of Iron: It's actually part of being the Sun Guardian, as he needs to be able to protect others with his body. He shrugged off crashing into a wall with a motorbike traveling at high speed. And was able to take Colonnello's memory bullet, which Iemitsu points out has a 90% chance of killing the target.
  • Megaton Punch: His arms can punch a hole in concrete. Couple that with his sun flames and it's an instant K.O to whoever is on the end of his punches.
  • My Fist Forgives You: Punches Tsuna to the face after he spilled out the truth to his sister. He's mad about it but in his words:
Ryohei: "One punch and I will be able to move on."
  • No Indoor Voice: He does have one, it's just that he tends to forget it.
  • Odd Friendship: With Hibari (though calling it 'friendship' is a stretch). Emphasized in the anime when they work together to protect Namimori.
  • Official Couple: Implied to be with Hana Kurokawa in the Future arc.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Downplayed; there are people who refer to him by his proper name, but it's much more common for him to be called Turf Top/Big Brother/Senpai.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: He's an excellent boxer and the strongest Guardian in terms of physical prowess, and yet is one of the weaker fighters in the group by virtue of the others just being better.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: He's still wearing it ten years in the future.
  • Power Fist: His main attacks are variations of boxing techniques that are powered by the sun flames. Although he doesn't even need the flames in order to overpower enemies.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: One of his attacks.
  • Scars Are Forever: The scar on his forehead.
  • Shirtless Scene: Almost always fights like this. It's justified though since he's a boxer.
  • Shoryuken: Maximum Cannon. Also Sunshine Uppercut.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: With Kyoko. Ryohei is loud and Hot-Blooded while Kyoko is your everyday Nice Girl.
  • Spam Attack: Maximum Ingram, in which he leaves after images of himself and they all use Maximum Cannon.
  • Talk to the Fist: He is a boxer, and his punches are nothing to laugh at, seeing that he was able to demolish the gym wall with his bare hands.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Gokudera and Hibari, although it's one-sided on his part.
  • Volleying Insults: Trades hair insults with Gokudera. And also with Hibari when he feels like it.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: The other guardians have their own weapon of choice, but he is content with using his fists. He later gets his Vongola gear with the others.

"There's some scene that I would never forget in my childhood memories. Kind mama. Charming I-pin. Young Vongola and the unique older people around him. I was happy to be there and I enjoyed it more than anything. I wanted to catch up to them as soon as possible...to the world that young Vongola and others live. You must take the younger me with you whenever from now on, too. I'm the one that wants to stay with you."
The Tenth Generation Lightning Guardian. Lambo is hyperactive five-year old assassin of the Bovino Family in Italy, who desires to take over the world and harbors a one-sided rivalry towards Reborn, whom he wants to destroy. He is unanimously regarded as an obnoxious nuisance by most of the people that he meets, mostly in part to his tendency to cause trouble for others, which usually ends with him attempting to hold in his tears before he breaks down crying.

He has a habit of pulling weapons out of his hair, most notably when he's either trying to blow himself, or someone else up. His most used weapon is the Ten-Year Bazooka, which is capable of switching the user out with their future counterpart from a decade into the future, which often paves the way for a smoother and cooler older counterpart of Lambo, who just so happens to be equally as big of a crybaby as his child counterpart was.

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: If he defeats someone by blind luck, expect him to gloat out loud that Lambo-sama is the best hitman of them all.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: Despite only being five years old, Lambo is already part of a mafia family as an assassin.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Mixed with being the friend that nobody likes. He is constantly being physically and emotionally picked on by the likes of Reborn, Gokudera, I-Pin, and Hana, with Ryohei, Yamamoto, and the girls being the only people that seem to tolerate him.
  • Animal Motifs: The bull, rather obviously. His Box Weapon is Gyudon, a large, lightning-elemental bull.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Is this within the Vongola Tenth Family Guardians, if that is counted. Has this dynamic especially with Gokudera.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Very easy to distract with candy and will not listen if he finds anything of interest, much to the annoyance of anyone taking care of him that is not Kyoko or Haru. Justified, since he is a 5-year-old.
  • Attention Whore: Will try to attract everyone's attention with his shiny grenade launchers and toys. If neglected, then he will start throwing bombs everywhere, and usually follows with a visit of his future self.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: As pointed out in-story, his 'Elettrico Cornata' looks cool but has never hit an opponent due to its very short range. Until 20YL Lambo works around the fault by projecting the lightning forwards.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He's the youngest guardian in the series, so he's often left out of many major events.
  • Berserk Button: Threatening Nana Sawada (who he loves like his own mother) is enough to make him angry and even trigger his Cambio Forma.
  • Boisterous Weakling: Has the tendency to challenge people older and stronger than him and force Tsuna and his friends to be his servants.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: He's the kind of kid that makes babysitting a living hell to anyone with less patience than Kyoko and Haru.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "Ga...man...n" (usually translated as 'tolerate', 'hold it in', etc.), said right before he's about to cry.
    • 10YL Lambo has "Yare yare" ('My oh my') almost any time he makes an appearance.
  • Chick Magnet: 10YL Lambo. He received so much chocolate on Valentine's Day that he got a nosebleed from eating it all.
  • Cowardly Lion: While regular Lambo thinks he's a badass and 20YL Lambo legitimately is one, 10YL Lambo is much more aware of the danger and would rather stay away from it. It doesn't stop him from eventually stepping up to the plate when he's needed, with varying results.
  • Emotional Powers: He only ever uses his Vongola powers when angry, sad, or homesick.
  • Enfante Terrible: Not so much on the terrible part, but he is after Reborn's head as ordered by his family.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: His new Vongola Gear can use his flames to magnetize iron sand for metal constructs.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: He decides to name his Box Weapon Beef Bowl, like it was some common pet.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Is loathed and regarded as an annoying nuisance by Reborn, Gokudera (who eventually mellows out of it), and Hana, who all blatantly express how much they dislike him to the point of physical harm, Tsuna and I-Pin are prone to finding his antics annoying as well, however they both still tolerate him and care about him deep down, and Yamamoto, Ryohei, and the girls seem to be the only people that don't harbor any bit of animosity towards him.
  • Grenade Spam: Fond of doing this whenever he's really upset.
  • Hammerspace Hair: He once took a pair of bird feet out of it! Well, without the bird.
  • He Is All Grown Up: Both of his "Adult" forms show that Lambo will eventually grow into quite the looker.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: People keep forgetting that he's five years old yet still forced to fight and often abused for laughs.
  • Identical Stranger: His 10YL self is the spitting image of Bianchi's ex-boyfriend, unfortunately for him.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Revealed in the Inheritance Ceremony Arc that he wants to be like the Guardians and do everything they do because he's lonely.
  • Improbable Age: He's a 5-year-old hitman, though he's not taken seriously by anyone.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Frequently. There's a reason one of his nicknames is 'Crybaby Lambo'.
  • The Load: He is a five-year-old kid forced into battles that are way over his abilities, forcing other characters to defend him from being hurt. It doesn't help that he is a Boisterous Weakling that doesn't understand the situation he is in, making the situation even more complicated. Tsuna understandably doesn't want him to participate, but Reborn forces the poor kid to fight anyway since he is the official Lightning Guardian.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Subverted, as Lambo's shield has an offensive capability, Corna Fulmine (Lightning Horns).
  • No Indoor Voice: Has quite a loud and annoying voice and he never seems to shut up in all of his scenes.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Shares this with I-pin. While the Arcobalenos have infant bodies, at least they have identifiable adult features. Lambo on the other hand, is drawn in a simplistic style and his body shape can be compared to broccoli. It's very jarring to see him in promotional artworks where everyone is looking pretty and he is just there.
  • Only One Name: Lambo is the only name that he is called in the series. Fans use "Bovino" as his family name as Fanon.
  • Out of Focus: Happens frequently throughout the series. In the Varia arc, his major battle against Lussuria ends with him being hospitalized for the rest of the arc, he spends most of the Future arc inside of the Vongola's base and only uses his new powers twice, has one battle in the Inheritance Ceremony Arc arc, and his only significance to the Curse of the Rainbow arc was unintentionally persuading Tsuna to work together with other families by mixing juices. Mostly justified as Tsuna doesn't like the idea of involving a child in the mafia.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Did not really take any training in order to improve himself and most of his fights are done by his future counterpart or won either by luck.
  • Pint-Sized Kid: No, that's not what 5-year-olds look like in real life!
  • Plucky Comic Relief: His annoying tendencies and antics with the others are usually the main source of comedy.
  • Shock and Awe: Besides being the Lightning Guardian, he can absorb electricity through his body, and his future selves can channel it through their horns for attacks.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: It's noteworthy to point out that he did not participate in the representative battle and against Jager and Checkerface as the stakes are really high and there is no reason for him to be pushed into battle anyways.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Claims that he can kill Reborn, but will cry if he is pushed or shoved. Loses this attitude when he is a young man.
  • Tears of Fear: Whenever he finally realizes his situation.
  • Third-Person Person: To show his very childish side.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Oh boy. He does things that usually get Tsuna and gang into trouble, throws bombs around after he starts to cry and is just an annoyance to everyone around him. A good example is in the future arc where he sneaked out of the base when Fuuta needed to fix some cables. This led to a Millifiore captain chasing after the poor kid, Irie almost discovering the Vongola Base and Tsuna being forced to go outside and catch him.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: His introduction has him trying to kill Reborn.
  • Tyke Bomb: He is raised as a mafia hitman at a really young age.
  • Unknown Rival: To Reborn at the beginning of the story. As the story went on, he seems to have forgotten all about that.
  • Verbal Tic: Usually ends his sentences with "-Damon ne"
  • With Cat Like Tread: Tries to kill Reborn, but does not even bother to learn the meaning of stealth.
  • Younger Than They Look: 10YL Lambo, the suave ladies' man that's frequently referred to as 'Adult Lambo', is only fifteen years old.

"The word “discipline” is something that I will never give up no matter what. But it’s not because it is my pride that I will not give it up. It’s because I cannot give it up. That is why it is my pride."
The Tenth Generation Cloud Guardian. Congratulations. You're the Student Council President of the Absurdly Powerful Student Council. You can get away with ''anything''. You even have that Red Armband Of Leadership. Wait, that's not you. That's Hibari. The Curb-Stomp Battle personified. He will be In Love with Your Carnage, so don't fight anywhere near him and his Automatically Violent self. Violent to anything and everything other than his Cute Critters, whom he won't attack even if they pierce his hand. Remember, don't piss him off or he will "bite you to death."
  • Aloof Ally: Actually the description of being the cloud guardian, which he practices really well.
Reborn: To be the aloof, drifting cloud that protects the family from an independent standpoint, and whom nothing can ever bind.
  • Animal Theme Naming: Hibari can mean skylark. Explains why he's so fond of animals, particularly birds.
  • Anti-Hero: Of the Nominal Hero variety. Hibari is definitely not a traditional good guy. He is a very ruthless Blood Knight and a jerkass loner who just happens to be on the side of good.
  • Badass Biker: Was briefly shown to ride a motorcycle in the Daily Life Arc, though it's never seen again.
  • Badass Longcoat: His Vongola Gear release.
  • Berserk Button: Damaging the school in any way will pretty much incur his wrath and bite someone to death. Likewise doing anything to his Red Armband will make him chase you to the ends of the earth. Just ask Skull.
  • Blood Knight: Fighting is pretty much Kyoya's sole motivation to be a Guardian.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "I'll bite you to death." An odd catchphrase that was made fun of on a splash page of the manga. After Hibari says this to Gola Mosca, Ryohei imagines him actually biting Mosca's head off.
    • In the case of Chibi Vampire Hibarin, "I'll suck you to death".
  • Characterization Marches On: At the start of the series, he has a comically serious attitude whenever he interacts with Tsuna and the gang (Making Black Comedy jokes, revealing he throws snowballs at people for fun, joining the Pole-Knocking contest). He loses this attitude after the Kokuyo Arc, becoming the stoic and no non-sense Blood Knight that all are familiar with.
  • Chick Magnet: Downplayed. He doesn’t have admirers following him around frequently in the same way Gokudera and Yamamoto do, but it’s been stated that he receives quite a bit of chocolate from girls on Valentine’s Day.
  • The Comically Serious: More noticeable in the earlier chapters when he humors Tsuna and his group's antics, that is until someone pisses him off and makes him leave the scene.
  • The Dreaded: By the enemies and his own allies thanks to his Wild Card nature. He is considered the Vongola's Strongest Guardian for a reason.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He may beat up anybody who dare defies his school rules, but he won't bite to death someone who has given up on fighting as shown when Naito Longchamp and Tsuna were hit by the Desolation Bullet.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol: Has a grappling hook hidden in his tonfa.
  • Hates Being Touched: He will bite you to death if you crowd.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: It happens, and not just to his Loyal Animal Companion trio. Possibly the most obvious one is that Hibari had absolutely no reason to save Kyoko, Haru, I-Pin, and Lambo from one of Skull's stray missiles. One would think he was paying Ryohei back for saving Nami Middle, but Hibari says otherwise (stating that he'd pay Ryohei back by taking Alaude's test). Notable because Hibari himself says multiple times he doesn't actively try to save anyone, and the missile was the opposite direction of the fight, so he couldn't even pass it off as indirect action like he usually does.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Handcuffs, anyone?
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Admires Tsuna's fighting skills when he is in Hyper Dying Will mode. If he's not in the mode, then he ignores the poor guy. It's shown even more in the Varia arc, as he hopes that the battle between Xanxus and Tsuna will awaken the latter's instincts.
  • Insane Troll Logic: After Kusakabe explains how Dying Will Flames work, he concludes that he can make Dying Will flames by getting pissed off. It worked, much to Kusakabe's surprise.
  • Japanese Delinquent: That is the head of the Student Council. His lackeys even wear the Bancho style uniform.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Half carrying Gokudera to find Tsuna in Kokuyo Land, how nice of him. Not! He literally throws Gokudera aside afterward, and it turns out he only helped the latter so they could be "even". Let's not even get started on the countless times he turned up to kick enemy butt and then says "They were crowding".
  • The Lancer: When he's actually ON the team, at least. He's extremely self-serving, unlike Tsuna who tends to get roped into helping others. But when worse comes to worst, he is the guardian that Tsuna relies the most.
  • Loners Are Freaks: He believes that having friends and allies is a sign of being weak and will beat up people for crowding at him. Any attempts of socializing with him end up with a tonfa on the offending person's face, being sent to the hospital or ignored if one is lucky.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Hibird and his hedgehogs.
  • Lyrical Dissonance: His song, Horizon, sounds a bit too upbeat to have lines like "I'll bite you to death."
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Acts like he was not affected by an enemy's attacks to make them fear him.
  • Married to the Job: Married to the school as the Disciplinary Committee leader.
  • Noble Demon: As much of a dick that he is, he will not harm an innocent person and will protect them from danger. He also tries to repay his debts to anyone who saves him, such as carrying Gokudera from danger when the former saved his life. He will also respect rules when asked to by people he respects as long as a reason is given.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: He is pretty known to challenging people who he thinks are strong, no matter what is happening around him, and will not listen to reason unless given a satisfactory one. This also links to his standards, as he won't even bother to remember someone who can't put up a fight.
  • Odd Friendship: With Ryohei (though calling it 'friendship' is a stretch). Emphasized in the anime when they work together to protect Namimori.
  • One-Man Army: Took on multiple teams of Millefiore goons that are attacking the base. He crushes them all in an instant, his future version at least. His current version was able to fight against Adelheid's 500 ice clones, each as strong as her.
  • Perpetual Frowner: You can count on one hand how many times he gives out a sincere smile, not counting his battle smirks.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • His pets. Also, his future self's efforts to save a dying Chrome.
    • He did accept the chocolate I-Pin gave him without so much as a frown. In the anime, he doesn't take the group's hard-earned summer festival cash because he sees that she's upset.
    • His future self, who gives Chrome the courage needed to activate her Vongola Ring.
    • When Tsuna was suffering from a Heroic BSOD, Hibari tells Tsuna that his face is boring and for Tsuna to watch Hibari's fight closely. For Hibari, this can be seen as his own way of attempting to cheer Tsuna up.
    • During his battle with Adelheid, he says that Tsuna will "bite the sky, one day". Meaning that he knows that Tsuna will grow up to become very powerful. Considering that Future Tsuna is one of the only people that Future Hibari respects due to losing to him, this means he's looking forward to the day when Tsuna is that strong.
    • Anytime Hibari even minutely acknowledges the other protagonists as being strong at all counts.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He is the strongest 10th generation Vongola guardian and is often associated with purple due to his cloud flames.
  • Red Armband of Leadership: Wherever he goes. It practically defines him. Touching it is one of his Berserk Buttons.
  • Satellite Love Interest: I-Pin only seems to be infatuated with Hibari because he looks like an older version of her master.
  • School Uniforms are the New Black: He is never seen wearing any other outfit besides his school uniform.
  • Secret-Keeper: His ten year later self was the only one aside from Shouichi to know about Future Tsuna's plans to defeat Byakuran, much to everyone else's shock.
  • Sidekick Ex Machina: Only shows up whenever there is a fight that has a high stake to win.
  • Sleepy Head: If he is not taking patrols or fighting enemies, then he is seen usually asleep on top of his beloved school. And if he is with other people, then he will step to the side and sleep until everyone is gone. He even fell asleep during Daemon Spades's Motive Rant
  • Smug Super: Let's face it. He's not humble. At all. And he's incredibly proud. The only thing is... he really does have the fighting genius and strength to back up his huge ego.
  • Spoiled Brat: He expects everything he wants to go his way. And no one seems to discourage this attitude of his. It doesn't help that he pretty much has a hold on all the authority figures in charge.
  • The Stoic: Nothing ever fazes this guy, whether he is biting someone to death or is fighting an enemy. And woe to the person who manages to piss him off.
  • Student Council President: He not only rules the school, but he also rules the whole town!
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: One of the well-known examples in the series, as he was able to get the number one spot on the popularity poll many times.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He comes very close to being one. Really, his sole redeeming factors are his dedication to Namimori and his weak spot for cute animals.
  • Vague Age: He's the only guardian that doesn't have a confirmed age, some supplementary material states that he's been the leader of the Disciplinary Committee since Ryohei first entered Namimori Junior High and he claims to "pick his own years".
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Badass as he is, this guy can be taken down by cherry blossoms. Even after he receives medication for it he doesn't like to talk about or be around sakura trees.
  • The Worf Effect: With his first fight with Mukuro. He is still under the effect of Shamal's Trident Mosquito and Mukuro took advantage of this, creating illusions of cherry blossom flowers that crippled him and rendered him unable to fight.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In his defense, his opponent is Suzuki Adelheid who can pretty much go toe-to-toe with him.

"You lost because of one reason, and only one reason. Because I was your opponent."
The Tenth Generation Mist Guardian. He's the trident-wielding guy with a Dark Past that you don't want to know about. In some completely lucky way, Mukuro has been reborn in all stages of hell, and remembers all of it. Due to that, he's gained Magical Eye powers and has been dead set on taking over Tsuna's body. But after the dirty tactics failed, he ended up being employed in the job of being the guardian of the person who beat him. Nowadays, he spends his time in the head of a girl who looks just like him, occasionally dropping by to save the day... Or something.
  • Abusive Parents: During childhood, he was experimented on by his mafia family and eventually killed them out of revenge, which started his deep hatred towards the mafia.
  • Action Fashionista: Alongside Gokudera, he one of the most fashion-oriented guardians, with Too Many Belts, studs, and leather accessories that you can put in an outfit.
  • Anime Hair: His "pineapple" hairstyle. How do those spikes stay in place all the time?
  • Anti-Hero: Like Hibari, Mukuro is a Nominal Hero. Even after his Heel–Face Turn, he still doesn't consider himself as part of the family but seems to have not made any moves to take over the world even after ten years in the future.
  • Arc Villain: Is the main antagonist of the Kokuyo Arc.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Don't compare his haircut to a pineapple while he's in earshot.
    • A less comical example would be how much he hates to be controlled. According to him, it's the main reason he was so pissed off towards Big Bad Daemon Spade during the Inheritance Ceremony arc.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: In his first appearance with Tsuna, where he pretended to be someone kidnapped by Mukuro in order to kill him. Doesn't really work thanks to circumstances.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: Non-romantic example, but he kicked Chrome out of the Kokuyo Gang and forced her to move to Namimori as a way to help her realize her true potential and to let herself be her own person. She was able to succeed, much to his joy.
  • Characterization Marches On: Was introduced as the Big Bad of the Kokuyo Arc who was seemingly imprisoned in Vindice Prison with the only indication that he would be returning was him possessing a little boy to watch over Tsuna during Yamamoto's baseball game. He returns in the Varia Arc, not only becoming one of the main protagonists of the series, but also one of the most popular characters.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He and the other Kokuyo gang were experimented by a mafia family, forcing them to endure painful experiments every day. He and the others escaped from them, where he began to swear revenge against all mafia members for the suffering they endured.
  • Demonic Possession: Via Chrome. Note that he doesn't use her for his own means and is actually quite fond of her, as he only appears to defend her from her enemies. Other than that, he's usually resting on the back of her mind.
  • Dissonant Serenity: No matter what the situation is, he always has a smile on his face.
  • Easily Forgiven: Tsuna forgives him a few months later after he tried killing Tsuna and all of his friends. And he didn't even apologize. Oh, and Lancia (who was possessed by Mukuro and killed all of his own friends) forgave him, too—for Tsuna's sake.
  • Enemy Mine: Happens at the end of the Inheritance Arc and following the third day of the Curse of the Rainbow trials. He's forced to join Tsuna's side and work with him and ends up in a team of other former villains to help take down the final Big Bad. That is, he's on a team with Byakuran and Xanxus. And also Dino and Squalo, who are less terrifying.
  • Evil Laugh: Kufufufufu~
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He has the deepest and most mature voice out all the Guardians.
  • Eye Scream: in order to activate his "Six Paths" technique, he has to gouge his eyes out.
  • Faking the Dead: Commits suicide in front of Tsuna and Reborn, but actually shot himself with a possession bullet, which allows him to take over the bodies of whoever he scratches his trident with.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Mukuro consistently acts polite (if condescending) to both his opponents and tentative allies like Tsuna and the others, even praising them for exceeding his expectations, but it doesn't do much to hide his sadistic and manipulative nature.
  • Forced Transformation: While he can possess animals on his own accord, Mukuro's forced into his owl's body when D.Spade steals his.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Even after joining the Vongola Family, none of the guardians particularly seem to like him, with Tsuna being the only one that seems to have completely forgiven him. Yamamoto and Ryohei seem to be rather indifferent but recognize his strength (mostly because they didn't meet Mukuro until the Varia Arc), and Gokudera and Hibari blatantly voice how much they still hate and distrust him.
  • Future Badass: His future counterpart is this, as he was able to fend off Byakuran while he was stuck in Vindice Prison and an illusion created by Chrome's Vongola ring.
  • Grand Theft Me: His plans for Tsuna as well as his main means of controlling his People Puppets. Also in a case of quite glorious irony, what he temporarily suffered courtesy of Daemon Spade.
  • A Handful for an Eye: Gouges his own eyes out to activate one of his Realm auras.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After his defeat from Tsuna's hands, he (or rather his proxy Chrome) became his mist guardian thanks to Reborn's efforts.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Aside from the Kokuyo uniform, he's rather fond of this.
  • Hellish Pupils: One, shape-shifting hellish pupil.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: His backstory reveals that he was used as a human experiment by the Estraneo which caused him to enact revenge by wiping out the entire family. This is justified until he makes the decision to try to wipe out the Mafia (and wants to start a world war) altogether, exemplifying how he became just as bad as the people he despised.
  • High-Class Glass: Daemon Spade's Devil Lens which can see through illusions and find weak spots
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: His outfit changes every time he appears, but be assured it will feature at least three of the following: A pair of boots, a leather jacket, a Badass Long Coat, stylish T-shirts, a pair of gloves (be they normal ones or fingerless ones), Too Many Belts, a necklace, earrings, etc..
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Has signs of this with Tsuna after his defeat, as he keeps a close eye of his growth via Chrome and claims that he will take over his body many times, even if he is able to do that with literally everyone else. For example, in chapter 385 he's shown looking quite pleased when he sees Tsuna defeat a foe and remarks that "He's gotten even stronger."
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Pretends to be defeated in his fight with Tsuna, but was counting on him lowering his guard so that he can possess him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: His future self has this, as he was not able to get a haircut in ten years.
  • Lookalike Lovers: Once separated, he and Chrome are closer to this.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Invoked by him during his fight with Daemon Spade. His opponent makes him fight illusions of his comrades— and Mukuro strikes them down without a moment's thought. Though it helps that he knew they were illusions, Daemon still lampshades his lack of hesitation.
    • His kicking Chrome out of Kokyou and sending her packing to Namimori the second he's released from the Vindice prison seems like this at first, since Future MM warned Chrome that he was only using her until he got out. Subverted later since it's revealed that his true intent was for her to get stronger and fulfill her potential, and he makes a point of visiting her while he's simultaneously in the middle of a battle to check up on her health.
  • Knight of Cerebus: It's his arc that shifts the series from a fairly comedic shonen into a more serious one.
  • Magical Eye: His left eye is the source of his powers and what power he can use depends on the number on his eye.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He frames other people for murders he committed while using their bodies and manages to receive forgiveness for his actions with minimal effort. Tsuna very readily forgives him after Mukuro (very likely on purpose) showed him strategic memories of how he sacrificed himself for the sake of letting his subordinates escape. This prompts Tsuna to actually feel apologetic, complete with an "I didn't understand anything!" scene. Never mind that Mukuro was shown to be completely unapologetic about the whole thing and actually came out and said that his plan was to turn the world into a sea of blood... Also, Mukuro was taken in when he was a child by a mafia boss named Lancia. Except Mukuro betrayed and brainwashed Lancia with his Hypnotic Eyes which forced him to kill his entire family. And during his first meeting with Tsuna, he pretends to be a poor, innocent boy who was kidnapped by... Rokudo Mukuro.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: His red eye is this, as it is the source of his powers. It's noteworthy that he is the only character that has supernatural powers, as everyone else relies on their Dying Will and rings in order to fight.
  • Master of Illusion: And thus he is the first pick for being the Mist Guardian.
  • Morphic Resonance: Whenever Mukuro possesses his Box Owl, it gains his red right eye. His most recent possession of Mukurowl resulted in the bird somehow having his pineapple hair tuff as well.
  • Nietzsche Wannabe: Changing the ugly world into a pure and beautiful sea of blood, starting a world war... he qualifies, no?
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: During his first meeting with Tsuna, he pretends to be a poor, innocent boy who was kidnapped by... Rokudo Mukuro.
  • Powers via Possession: When he possesses someone, he can use all their abilities thanks to his Magical Eye. Doesn't matter how many he will possess as he can learn it instantly.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Zigzagged. He's the most ruthless and manipulative of all the Guardians, but his goal is to destroy the mafia crime families... and turn the world into a sea of blood. Point is, he's not a nice guy.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Killed the Estranosa Family at a really young age as revenge.
  • Wild Card: Even more so than Hibari. He joins the Vongola in fights for his own reasons and even threatens to possess Tsuna's body so that he can rule the mafia.
  • Younger Than They Look: He looks, sounds, and acts as if he were in his early twenties. He's 15.

"I want to be someone that can protect all that I want to protect forever!"
The second and unofficial Tenth Generation Mist Guardian. She was once an average Japanese girl named "Nagi" who lived a reclusive life with neglectful parents, until getting involved in a near-fatal car accident that resulted in the loss of her right eye and many internal organs, while on the brink of death, she was about to give up on life until Mukuro Rokudo offered her a second chance at life, providing her illusionary organs and a new name.

She has a deep admiration for Mukuro, to the point of becoming a member of the Kokuyo Gang and having a very a similar appearance to him. Despite this, Chrome desires to become more confident without the help of Mukuro and prove that she is a powerful illusionist.

Due to sharing a body with Mukuro, the two both hold the title as the Mist Guardian of the Vongola.

  • Abusive Parents: Her mother doesn't even waste a single second before immediately shutting down the prospect of her transplanting an organ to her daughter and stating that she is a lost cause without any remorse.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: Not exactly hard to place though; Shrinking Violet trope aside, Chrome seems to have a case of social anxiety considering how often she blushes or avoid eye contact when speaking, and she’d even go as far as to run away whenever the others try to simply talk to her. It’s even said that the reason she is so adverse to acts of kindness is because she felt unworthy, which also points to her having low self-esteem quite possibly due to her upbringing. She does eventually learn to warm up to people.
  • Badass Adorable: Especially after the Art Evolution, where she became even cuter.
  • Battle Couple: With Mukuro. And this happens again after she creates her own organs for the fight against Jager.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Warms up considerably due to Kyoko, Haru, and to an extent, the other Vongola guardians due to genuinely caring for her wellbeing without expecting anything in return from her.
  • Broken Bird: Her parents left her for dead, as her mother refuses to give her own organs for her and her father would rather attend an important meeting than stay by her side. Her interactions with the Kokuyo Gang is not better, as she is always badmouthed by Ken and M.M. It's to the point where she runs away from Kyoko and Haru in the Future Arc thanks to her not being used to receiving any kindness.
  • Can't Live Without You: Chrome is reliant on Mukuro to create/maintain her illusionary organs. In the Future arc, she learns how to create them herself, but can only do so by using the Vongola Mist Ring, a fact that Daemon Spade has no qualms taking advantage of.
  • Character Development: Goes from depending on Mukuro to providing her organs for her to finally showing her resolve in being seen as separate from him. As she does, she uses her own flames to create her own organs and is shown to be equal to Mukuro in power.
  • Characterization Marches On: She was less gentle and meek in her debut chapter, she introduces herself with the same signature laugh of Mukuro, slyly smiles when meeting the Vongola, kisses Tsuna on the cheek as a form of greeting, and playfully taunts Mammon for falling for her illusions. All of these characteristics are completely abandoned after her second appearance in the Future Arc.
  • Deflector Shields: "Cortina Nebia", a mist barrier that is directly linked to Chrome's life. If it breaks, she breaks.
  • Demoted to Extra: Not with her present counterpart, however in the Future Arc she is the only guardian whose adult counterpart does not receive very much screen time, only receiving a few faceless cameos and appearing in the final frame at the end of the arc. Even the picture of Chrome from the future is actually just taken from a piece of promotional material.
  • Dude Magnet: Shares a deep connection with Mukuro, has kissed Tsuna on the cheek, constantly flusters Ken by unintentionally making him blush (though usually only in the anime), and immediately attracted many male students upon transferring to Namimori middle school. Unfortunately, she seems to have the bad habit of attracting predators as well, with Mammon attacking her with tentacles, Belphegor and Lussuria ogling her body, and Glo Xinia and Julie Kato even attempting to molest her at one point.
  • Extreme Doormat: Follows Mukuro's orders and almost never acts on her own will, even giving her life to him even if she has the means to support herself.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She lost an eye thanks to the accident. It's a coincidence that it's the same eye as Mukuro's red one, which Gokudera lampshades when she is first introduced.
  • Faux Action Girl: Invoked. As it turns out, a good deal of the reason she relies so heavily on Mukuro is that she wants to. Once she realizes that she'd rather be his equal and help protect him and their friends she upgrades to full out Action Girl, shocking everyone with her skill.
  • Gogo Enslavement: While not quite as fanservicy as the trope usually implies, Daemon's first order of business after he pulls a Hypnotize the Captive on her is making her change into the Simon Middle School uniform.
  • Go Through Me: Used as a body shield by Daemon Spade to protect himself from Tsuna and Yamamoto.
  • High-Class Glass: Daemon Spade's Devil Lens which can see through illusions.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Not really shown in the story proper, but the reason she got into the accident that caused her to lose most of her organs and eventually meet Mukuro was that she had been trying to rescue a cat.
  • Luminescent Blush: She blushes quite a bit and it grows even more prominent when she’s nervous, this is even lampshaded by Glo Xinia which causes her to retort back that it's a trait that she inherited from her mother.
  • Magic Skirt: Her skirt doesn't move or show much whenever she's fighting. A straight case as well when she lends her body to Mukuro, as her skirt changes into pants.
  • Master of Illusion: Although not as much of a master as Mukuro, that is, until the Future arc. Mammon/Viper even complimented her skills in one of the later chapters. As it turns out she is far more powerful than she lets on.
  • Meaningful Rename: See Significant Anagram. The syllables of Chrome's name in Japanese are an anagram of Mukuro's to reflect how, when she is first introduced, they are technically the same person.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: When Daemon controlled her.
  • New Transfer Student: Chrome officially transfers into Namimori Middle School in Chapter 349.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: In a filler arc, she suddenly cries and declares that she doesn't want to fight anymore. She is actually possessed by Daemon Spade
  • Parental Neglect: Her mother and step-father barely even hesitate before deciding to leave her to die after her car crash. The dad is more concerned with his business meetings and the mom refuses to do an organ transplant on the grounds that she doesn't want her body chopped up for a child whom saving "just doesn't seem worth it."
  • The Quiet One: She doesn't talk much.
  • Shrinking Violet: It takes a while for her to open up to people, to the point she would even run away from anyone who attempts to speak with her.
  • Significant Anagram: Chrome (Kuromu) Dokuro an anagram of Mukuro Rokudo. Her name before meeting Mukuro was Nagi, meaning this was very much intentional.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She is the only female guardian. And if she is feeling well, she can kick ass with no effort.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of the Kokuyo Gang (which she shares with Fran). She is the only member of the group that was previously not a criminal and only seems to have joined because of her devotion to Mukuro.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Her fight with Glo Xinia, when she manages to successfully create realistic illusions of Ken and Chikusa and an illusory body for Mukuro to take over instead of her.
  • Undying Loyalty: Chrome would rather let herself die than betray or be used against Mukuro.
