Vongola Primo and his guardians, from left to right Alaude, Knuckle, G, Giotto, Ugetsu Asari, Lampo, and Daemon Spade.

The original members of the First Vongola Family, formed as a vigilante group that existed to protect people. The Guardians were from diverse backgrounds as Vongola Primo took in anyone he liked such a royal, clergy and a part of a rival family.

    General
All guardians provide examples for these tropes:
  • Big Damn Heroes: All but Spade for Cozarto Simon and his family, as shown in a flashback.
  • Generation Xerox: The Tenth Generation Family greatly resemble the First Generation Vongola Family in appearance and personality — even to the point of using the same weapons! Some are more apparent than others.
    • Alaude is basically a European Hibari, adding to the list in Hibari lookalikes with Fon.
    • G is pretty much a calmer and wiser pink-haired Gokudera, even sharing the title of being the Primo's/Decimo's right hand man.
    • Ugetsu looks a lot like Yamamoto wearing a Shinto outfit and likes to play his flute before giving it up for a sword.
    • Lampo looks a lot more like Future Lambo in the anime. Interesting that he resembles the Adult Lambo appearance-wise but is more like Kid Lambo in maturity.
    • Daemon Spade has more in common with Mukuro than Chrome, adding more evidence to the speculation of who the real Tenth Generation Mist Guardian is.
    • Partially subverted with Knuckle as his first appearance resembled more like Yamamoto than Ryohei. Apparently, putting a Pointless Band-Aid (in the anime and some manga appearances) solves this.
  • Posthumous Character: With the exception of Daemon Spade in the manga.
  • Reincarnation: Implied to be the real reason why the first generation and the tenth generation resemble each other so much.
  • Stalker without a Crush: In the Drama CD at least, when all of them thought that Giotto was courting someone and followed him for the rest of the day.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Giotto with the exception of Daemon, who is loyal to Elena all along.

Boss

    Giotto

Giotto

Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa (Japanese), Ho-Je Seon (Korean)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/giotto_modern_artwork.png
The Boss of the First Generation of the Vongola.
The First Boss and founder of the Vongola Family, Giotto was a benevolent man who accepted people of all kinds regardless of their background. Despite his youth, he turned the Vongola into a major power, before retiring and moving to Japan. Giotto is shown to have possessed the Dying Will Flame, and special gloves like Tsuna's. He and Tsuna are identical.
  • Adaptation Expansion: In the manga we don't learn much about his backstory until the Inheritance Ceremony Arc, whereas in the anime there is a filler arc that shows us his relationship with his guardians.
  • An Ice Person: The original user of Zero Point Breakthrough: First Edition. Others after him tried to replicate the technique, and they would almost always fail, creating something else in the process. The only people alive who can use the real thing are the Vongolas Nono and Decimo (Timoteo and Tsuna, respectively).
  • Benevolent Boss: He started the Family in order to protect those dear to him, and accepted all kinds of people to be his companions.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With his best friend and right-hand man G, who he knows since childhood. Also with Shimon Cozart, to the point that they made an oath swearing that their families will be partners for generations.
  • Identical Grandson: More like great-great-great-grandson. Though it's implied there is a specific reason for this.
  • Older Than They Look: Despite having lived at least long enough to conceive a child, he appears barely older than Tsuna. Also, we don't yet know whether the form he appears in reflects how old he was when he died or not.
  • Passing the Torch: Ironically it's implied that the Secondo wasn't chosen as successor. Tsuna however is approved.
  • Posthumous Character: As with his guardians, but his will still lives on in the Vongola Rings.
  • Retired Badass: After he was chased off by Ricardo, he went to Japan and settled there, becoming Sawada Ieyasu who is Tsuna's ancestor.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: His eyes look like Tsuna's when he's in Hyper Dying Will Mode.
  • World's Strongest Man: Known as the strongest Boss in all of the Vongola's history.

Guardians

    G

G

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/KHR_G_8463.jpg
The Vongola's First Storm Guardian. Primo's childhood friend and eventual right-hand man in the first ever Vongola Family. Initially uses a gun as a weapon but wields a bow and arrow when carrying out Vongola duties.
  • Battle Butler: Is Giotto's right-hand man and can kick ass with his gun.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has red hair and eyes o go with his red Storm Flame. The anime changes this to pink.
  • Delinquent: Fon states how Gokudera had the same rash personality as a younger G.
  • Facial Markings: His facial tattoo resembles the appearance of a Storm Flame.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: To his boss and best friend Giotto. They are friends ever since childhood and are close to each other until they are adults.

    Asari Ugetsu

The Vongola's First Rain Guardian. A Japanese musician who sold his instruments for swords without hesitation when the Vongola was in danger. Calm and speaks in a very formal tone.
  • A Friend in Need: He didn't hesitate to sell his valued instruments for travel fees and buying his weapon (he never owned one before hand) to help when the Family was in crisis.
  • An Ice Person: He is able to freeze his Rain Flames to create ice.
  • Cultured Warrior: A fine swordsman and musician who plays a Japanese flute.
  • Curtains Match the Window: To go with his blue Rain Flame.
  • Dual Wielding: FOUR swords between two hands (A longsword on one and the other three short swords on the other).
  • Master Swordsman: He can effectively improvise and create new techniques to suit the situation.
  • Meaningful Name: Asari means 'clam', referencing the Vongola as the Italian counterpart for the word.

    Knuckle

Knuckle

Voiced by: Hidenobu Kiuchi (Japanese), Ho-San Lee (Korean)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/knuckle2_5654.png
The Vongola's First Sun Guardian. A champion boxer who accidentally killed an opponent in the ring, leading him to become a priest to atone for his actions, never taking boxing again. That is, until the Vongola Family was in danger, giving himself three minutes to temporarily re-use his boxing skills.
  • Badass Preacher: An extreme priest who was a former boxing champion definitely counts.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: After becoming a priest, he still fights with his fists to protect his family.
  • Casualty in the Ring: Accidentally invoked this to an opponent (incapacitated in the anime), causing him to turn to God and give up boxing.
  • Catchphrase: Tends to use "to the ultimate/limit", like Ryohei's "extreme".
  • Elemental Punch: The First Sun Guardian was said to deliver glowing punches that can strike at a distance. Although it is possible that they were actually Sun Flames.
  • Odd Friendship: With Alaude, although it's unknown if Alaude thinks of him as a friend.
  • Race Against the Clock: In the Vongola's moment of crisis, he gives himself three minutes to use his fists to fight and save his friends.

    Lampo

Lampo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/KHR_Lampo_7131.jpg
The Vongola's First Lightning Guardian. A spoiled coward hailing from a royal family, Primo would force him into battle.
  • Child Hater: Cannot stand kids and really cannot stand Lambo and refuses to give him his test. He was only forced to do it out of his loyalty to Giotto.
  • Cowardly Lion: It is revealed that Giotto has to force him to go into battles.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has green hair and eyes to go with his green Lightning Flame.
  • Facial Markings: A lightning bolt under his right eye.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: If you see the still-shot of Lambo's box weapon, you can see that Lampo is using a Wok as a shield.
  • Meaningful Name: Lampo is Italian for flash or lightning.

    Alaude

Alaude

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/KHR_Alaude_2407.jpg
The Vongola's First Cloud Guardian. An aloof person who is head of a secret agency in an unknown country. He has a tendency to distance himself from the family but does show benevolence and compassion at times.

In the manga, it's been revealed that he was Primo's strongest Guardian and was the first CEDEF External Advisor.

    Daemon Spade

Daemon Spade

Voiced by: Atsushi Kousaka (Japanese), Ho-Cheol Kang (Korean)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/KHR_D__Spade_99.jpg
The Vongola's First Mist Guardian. Daemon Spade is a fickle illusionist who would become a traitor to the First Generation Vongola.

Mysteriously appears again in the manga, under the guise of Simon Family's Katou Julie, using Chrome as a hostage to get to Mukuro.

  • Ax-Crazy: Implied, always in Chapter 329. He orders Enma to "Take Sawada's skull and crush it like glass", and then he laughs maniacally...
  • Badass Longcoat: A central piece of his new outfit in the Inheritance Ceremony arc.
  • Bodyguard Betrayal: Known as a backstabber to Primo. He's somehow back in the manga under the Simon Family to betray Vongola again. Then again his death scene and flashback made it clear his loyalty never lie for Giotto, but Elena.
  • Body Surf: His method of stay exists in the modern world. He would transfer his soul to body from bodies to watch over the Vongola as he sees fit.
  • Body Horror: Seems to be happening to his body. With two large eyes on his legs and a large mouth on his side which he speaks out of.
  • The Chessmaster:
    • Lost against Mukuro on purpose so that he could steal Mukuro's body, thus becoming more powerful than almost every character in the series.
    • The elimination of almost every family close to Vongola, the massacre of 12 CEDEF members, and the death of Enma's family, resulting in the Simon Family relations with Vongola being totally cut off, was all his doing?
  • Evil Laugh: "Nufufufufu.." Sound familiar? Change the "N" to a "K" and you have the exact replica of Mukuro's evil laugh.
  • Freudian Excuse: Because the Vongola weakened their military forces, his lover was killed in the crossfire. This made Spade spend the next few centuries trying to strengthen the Vongola to avoid this tragedy again.
  • Grand Theft Me:
    • In the manga, he uses Julie as a vessel. He then plans to use Chrome as a means to take over Mukuro's body. It worked.
    • In Chapter 344, he himself admits that since his death he's been jumping from one body to another in order to spy on the Vongola.
  • High-Class Glass: His Devil Lens seems to be designed after this. Sort of justified, since he was an aristocrat.
  • Master of Illusion: From being able to fool Arcobaleno, dispelling other illusions to cursing someone by looking through his lens—this guy is scary.
  • Motive Decay: His reason for joining Vongola is for Elena and the fact that Giotto and he wish to protect the weak people from harm. Unfortunately, Gitto's dissolving of their armed forces, Elena's death, and his misunderstanding her last wishes turns him to a manipulative vengeful spirit that only wants the Vongola Family to be the strongest.
  • One-Winged Angel: [[spoiler: All signs point to Spade having one given that once he managed to steal Mukuro's body, there's a tendency for him to suddenly gain eyes in random places as well as mouths as seen here. His Armamento Completo Daemon transformation is even worse, as he looks almost uncanny.
  • Out-Gambitted: Primo somehow got wind of Spade's plot to kill Cozarto, sent the rest of his Guardians to save him, and apparently succeeded. Spade was completely unaware of this until the memory of it was revealed when Kaoru forfeited.note  Needless to say he wasn't happy...
  • Stalker with a Crush: At the beginning of the arc as Julie, he stalks Chrome, sometimes giving her more decent food and other items. Later, he kidnaps her, and tells Tsuna & Co. that she's "in his bed.".
  • Slasher Smile: At the end of Chapter 335, coupled with a terrifying Nightmare Face.
  • Visionary Villain: Daemon plans to make the perfect Vongola Family, by any means necessary.
  • Walking Spoiler: There is a reason why he has more trope entries than any other of Giotto's Guardians.

Allies

    Elena

Elena

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/KHR_Elena_7835.png
Elena was the daughter of a Duke and the lover of Daemon Spade. She was instrumental in the creation of the Vongola Family.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Averted. She is the reason why Daemon and Giotto made an alliance as she wants to protect the weak.
  • Blue Blood: She is the daughter of a Noble Family
  • For Great Justice: She convinced Daemon to join the Vongola to protect the weak from the corrupt.
  • Hot Librarian: Going strictly by a flashback, she seemed to have been in charge of the Vongola's library.
  • Nice Girl: She certainly is one as she wishes for nothing else but to protect the townspeople from harm
