The main members of the Varia. From left to right: Lussuria, Mammon, Belphegor, Leviathan, Squalo, and Xanxus.

The Vongola Famiglia's elite independent assassination squad. They are composed of genius assassins who work in the deepest recesses of the Mafia. Each member takes on missions that are said to be impossible to accomplish by humans; however, they do not accept a mission unless they believe there is a 90% chance of success. Those that see them work often say that their high-level assassination skills are demonic.

    General
All Varia officers provide examples for these tropes:
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: They can adapt well with the techniques of their opponents and counter them with a better one, which earned them the term "Varia Quality" by the Vongola.
  • Anti-Hero: They are considered heroes in name only because they are allied with the Vongola.
  • Dysfunctional Family: A group of bloodthirsty fighters thinking of each other as family? Nah. But they at least have the decency to look out for each other, if they are still alive that is.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: They are the Vongola's Elite independent assassination Squad and get quite a bit of screentime because of such. Not to mention, the entirety of the Ring battles center around them fighting Tsuna and the gang for the right to be the Decimo Generation.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: In both the past and the Future Arc, they wear leather uniforms.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: They're not entirely heartless, especially after their defeat at the hands of Tsuna and his Guardians.
  • Meaningful Name: Almost all of their names are related to the sin that they are representing.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Despite having a "uniform" in the form of their leather outfits, each member has their own take on it, such as Belphegor wearing his purple and black striped shirt instead of a dress shirt and tie like Xanxus, or Levi also wearing the bandoliers for his lightning umbrellas over his coat in the Future Arc. It's stated in the manga extras that part of the Varia's name comes from how many variations there are for its uniform.
  • One Name Only: Except Squalo.
  • Psycho for Hire: They are this for the Vongola Famiglia, being its Independent Assassination Squad and many of its members being less than mentally stable (Belphegor, Xanxus, and Lussuria come to mind).
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: Xanxus' guardians are this in the ten year skip, where they are introduced again as more quirky than their younger counterparts.

Leaders

    Xanxus

Xanxus

Voiced by: Masanori Ikeda (Japanese), Choi Han (Korean) Christopher Sabat (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xanxus_modern_render.jpg
"I'll carve your name into Vongola's history books. As the foolish runt who dared to defy Xanxus all by his little self."
The second major villain in the series, this guy is the leader of the Varia Assassination Squad, which should be enough to tell that he isn't someone you want to anger. Too bad though, his Berserk Button is broken and can't be turned off. He was raised as the son of the 9th Vongola Boss, but after discovering that he was adopted, he went on Unstoppable Rage mode and tried to take over the Vongola by force, but ultimately failed and was frozen. Years later, he pulled a lot of strings after discovering that Tsuna would be the 10th boss instead of him. That way, he would not only kill the competition, but have the support of the higher circles of the Vongola. Once again, he was thwarted, and ten years in the future, he fights on the same side as Tsuna for the Vongola's victory.
  • The Alcoholic: A fan book claimed that he likes tequila and whiskey, and he's seen holding some type of liquor in some instances. Fanon likes to play this trope with him basically being a Functional Alcoholic.
  • Art Evolution: He seems to be one of the more affected ones by this. Apparently, he received one hell of a makeover ten years into the future. His fans also increased exponentially after his new appearance.
  • Bad Boss: Just look at how he treats Squalo. The fact that Viper preferred to run away than to face his anger after losing to Mukuro should also tell you something. Ironically, his subordinates are arguably even more loyal to him than those of Tsuna.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: His face is covered in scars and he's always frowning, and yet the fangirls go bonkers over him.
  • Berserk Button: Mentioning his defeat at the hands of Tsuna is a sure way to send him into an Unstoppable Rage. It remains so even ten years into the future though he is more stoic about this.
  • Big Eater: Shown to devour lots of meat during the Representative Arc and as revealed in the Future Arc, he's a picky one to boot.
  • Bring It: During their battle, after listening to Siel's monologue for a while, Xanxus gets bored and calmly beckons for him to just come and get some already. Badassery ensues.
  • Burn Scars, Burning Powers: Xanxus' face is covered by a large burn scar that was inflicted by the Ninth Vongola Boss' Dying Will Flames when he tried to rebel. Normally only a small scar on his left cheek is visible, but the whole scar appears when Xanxus becomes enraged and uses his own Dying Will Flame, the Flame of Wrath.
  • Coat Cape: Wears his Varia jacket over his shoulders even while fighting. It's a mystery how he manages to keep it in place during all these fights.
  • Cool Chair: A subtle Running Gag that he always brings his throne like chair everywhere, even to a hotspring!
  • Determinator: Although his determination to get the position of Vongola boss, even when all odds are against him, might not be a really good thing.
  • Deep Sleep: It was suggested that being asleep for eight years kept him from aging mentally and as a result still remembered his grudge against the Ninth. Although, it was better than being aware that he was trapped and boxed in steel where no light and sound can reach him.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Per his breakdown with his fight against Tsuna. He doesn't want any pity from you, he wants to be worshiped by all the scum in the world.
  • Energy Ball: His Flame of Rage manifests this way in his hand.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Squalo devoted to fight for him until he's crowned as the Vongola boss, even letting his hair grow out.Levi also bends himself backwards to do his bidding, even letting himself be stepped all over.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As much as disagrees with Tsuna, he is very much loyal to the Vongola and it sickens him at the thought of being involved with the Millefiore Family.
Xanxus: "Regardless of our internal strife, in times of crisis, when we are attacked by scumbags from the outside... We, the Vongola, are always... as one!!"
  • Evil Counterpart: In terms of looks, personality, upbringing involving the Vongola, weapons, and box weapons, he's pretty much the anti-Tsuna. Although Xanxus' more of an Anti-Hero after he was beaten by Tsuna.
  • Evil Laugh: He tends to have it when he goes off ranting about how everyone else is trash.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He has a deep, manly, and raspy voice thanks to Masanori Ikeda.
  • Female Gaze: In the anime, during his fight with Rasiel, the camera spends quite a bit of time lingering on those leather-clad legs of his.
  • Generation Xerox: Xanxus is actually a subversion of this. His actions of uprooting Tsuna from being the successor of the Tenth generation is reminiscent of Vongola Secondo for Primo, down to them having similar features. However, the subversion comes from The Reveal that Xanxus neither has Vongola blood and that Daemon was more responsible for Giotto stepping down than Ricardo did.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Somehow manages to be both- covered in scars, Xanxus was originally rather villainous, but ends up on Tsuna's side, once Tsuna becomes the true Vongola Decimo.
  • Guns Akimbo: With special guns made for Beam-O-Wars.
  • Human Popsicle: He was frozen for a decade after his failed coup by the Ninth Vongola Boss. He's mostly fine but has scars thanks to the ordeal.
  • Jerkass: Through and through. He isn't entirely heartless, but he's never done anything which could be deemed nice either.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Xanxus could care less if anything bad happens to his subordinates. He laughs hysterically when he thinks that Squalo was killed by a shark during the Rain Ring Battle and orders Gola Mosca to kill Mammon after he was defeated by Mukuro.
    • His future counterpart is hardly any better, nonchalantly shrugging off the thought of Squalo being killed by Zakuro.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: Despite the fact he lost to Tsuna in their battle, he tries to take the rings by force. However upon wearing them, the rings instantly rejected because he's not truly of Vongola blood. Basically meaning the whole contest between the Varia and Tsuna's group was pretty much pointless since he was doomed to lose from the start.
  • Older Than They Look: He actually fits both this and Younger Than They Look. Due to being frozen for 8 years, his present biological age is supposed to be 16. Not that anyone could tell by looking at him, since he already looked like he was in his 20s before he was frozen.
  • Ominous Pipe Organ: He tends to have Ominous Pipe Organ music in the background whenever he turns up.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He's often seen sitting on his Cool Chair or some other furniture when not fighting. Although this trait of authoritative badassery is demonstrated during his fight with Rasiel.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Hardly seen without a frown on his face, as he thinks he's better than everyone. His smile isn't better.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Any place he is residing or fights usually turns to ash after a couple of chapters thanks to his infamous temper.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • His future counterpart actually acknowledged Tsuna to represent the Vongola's strength before the Choice Battle Arc.
    • His current self also accepts, seemingly without too much fuss, to have the Varia represent Mammon. He even knew what Mammon was going to ask.
  • Picky Eater: He doesn't want lamb, he wants beef. And no he doesn't want the cheap stuff, only the best beef in the world. And you better serve it to him filleted or he will toss you out of the castle.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: He only eats meat and only eats the best meat in the world. Give him something lower and he'll throw whoever serves him out of his castle.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Siel even references this, remarking how his vicious red eyes resemble his pet's.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: Pretty much is this with Tsuna once the Curse of the Rainbow arc hits, and shows this in the future. He willingly goes along with Tsuna's plan to save Reborn and the other Arcobaleno, including Mammon, just as long as he gets to fight Jaeger. This ended up with him on a team with fellow former villains Byakuran and Mukuro, as well as Squalo and Dino, but you'd be forgiven for not noticing them at first.
  • Scars Are Forever: Xanxus's face and body has heavy scarring all over it. When he goes into an Unstoppable Rage, the scars intensify.
  • Shirtless Scene: Amano loves to draw him shirtless as seen here and here. The only other person she ever draws shirtless is Tsuna, and that's only when he gets shot by the Dying Will Bullet...
  • Significant Anagram: Overlaps with Sdrawkcab Name to the theme of being Tsuna's polar opposite, if the X's are removed and his name is spelled backward, the phonic pronunciation of the kanji "Suna" means "sand or grit" to signify the deterioration of structures in the passage of time. In contrast to "Tsuna" meaning "rope or bond" in recreating relations in the Vongola.
  • The Slacker: It's mentioned that he rarely fights seriously. He usually prefers sitting in his comfortable chair and waiting until his subordinates do the dirty work for him. But once he gets serious, be sure that asses will be kicked.
  • Slasher Smile: Let's say that the only time he smiled something akin to genuine smile was in Levi’s Imagine Spot.
  • Sleepy Head: Always shown to be slouching asleep in his elaborate chair. He was even asleep in the first battle of the representative war, much to his subordinate's amusement.
  • Slouch of Villainy: He's shown to sit this way whenever he appears on-screen, and he fights Siel without getting off his chair.
  • Social Darwinist: Seems to believe in the survival of the strongest and refers to everyone he looks down on as trash.
  • Spoiled Brat:
    • He was raised to have everything only to discover that he couldn't have that from the very beginning. He didn't take it well.
    • Even ten years into the future, although some say he's improved note , he's still horribly spoiled and rotten tempered, as seen in the "beef incident." It has to be beef, and it has to be filleted, and how do they expect him to eat this shit?!
  • The Stoic: He's not a man of words and only glares to intimate whoever he talks to, especially ten years later.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: As his future self can attest.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Mukuro, Byakuran, Hibari and Dino. As seen in the meeting with Tsuna, all of them want to fight Jager and will not listen to anything else, so Reborn lets them group up instead. But this was all for naught as Jager was able to beat them with ease.
  • This Cannot Be!: He is clearly getting beaten by Tsuna towards the end of their fight. He's not too happy about that and says things like "Not possible! This is impossible!"
  • Unusual Eyebrows: It might be subtle compared to other examples, but his eyebrows split into two.
  • We Have Reserves: His attitude to his subordinates in general. He even laughed when he heard that Squalo had died!
  • Xanatos Gambit: The outcome of the Cloud Ring match. If Gola Mosca wins, he obtains the Cloud Ring. If Gola Mosca loses, it will go berserk and kill all the attending combatants in one fell swoop with the Varia long gone. If the opposition fights back instead of running away, they would land in hot water for hurting Vongola Nono, who was secretly used as its power source while making the Varia look like his avengers and gaining the support of the mafia. The third outcome was what happened when Tsuna defeated Gola Mosca in a Big Damn Heroes moment, turning what was meant to be a tiebreaker victory in Tsuna's side null and void, resulting in the Sky match being hosted anyway and giving him one more chance to win the Ring Conflict. However, he didn't count on losing the Sky match and the Vongola Rings themselves rejecting him due to not having the Blood of Vongola anyway.

    Tyr

Tyr

The first boss of the Varia and holder of the Sword Emperor title before Squalo. He did not have a left hand.
  • Handicapped Badass: One-handed, and also a sword-wielding assassination squad boss? He definitely qualifies for this trope.
  • Master Swordsman: Squalo, a talented swordsman himself, had to fight Tyr for two days and two nights before managing to defeat him.
  • Meaningful Name: Tyr is the name of a one-handed god in Norse Mythology.

Guardians

    Superbi Squalo

Superbi Squalo

Voiced by: Hiroki Takahashi (Japanese), Myeong-Jun Jeong (Korean) Kellen Goff (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/superbi_squalo.jpg
Xanxus's second in command, and by far most loyal subordinate. Squalo is a master swordsman who defeated different styles to perfect his own. He was up to be the Varia's leader, but mellowed out as soon as Xanxus entered the picture. Not only that, he stays loyal to his boss even after being treated like trash, which made him a fan girl favorite by default. He made a promise to never cut his hair until Xanxus became boss of the Vongola family. He was defeated in the Rain Ring Battle by Yamamoto, while his future self becomes his Sink or Swim Mentor.
  • Alliterative Name: Superbi Squalo.
  • Animal Motifs: Everything about him screams Jaws. Even his box weapon is a shark!
  • Artificial Limbs: Cut off his own hand in order to better understand one of his opponent's fighting styles. He has it replaced with a hand that can turn at any angle which he attaches his sword to. Literally.
  • Battle Cry: VOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIII!
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Not a single mark even after losing the Rain Battle or after another ten years of fights.
  • Blood Knight: He went on a killing spree in his youth to absorb new techniques to expand and perfect his own style.
  • Catchphrase: VOOOOIIII!!! note
  • Cool Sword: His sword has hidden explosives he can release at will.
  • Devoted to You: So devoted to Xanxus even with all the crap the latter gives him.
  • Face Palm: When Yamamoto is 'screwing around' with his puppy.
  • Hidden Depths: He may come across as a reckless loudmouth with a one-track mind, but he's perceptive enough to see through powerful illusions and smart enough to be the Varia's Strategy Captain in the future. Also, the fact that he's the only Varia member brave enough to talk back to Xanxus, no matter how much Xanxus abuses him, certainly says something.
  • Hot-Blooded: So much so that Lussuria has to warn him of his blood pressure.
  • Important Haircut: What he plans to do after his promise to Xanxus is fulfilled. As his future self still has long hair, safe to say this didn't happen.
  • In-Universe Nickname: Squ, Squ-chan, Squa-senpai, shitty shark, stupid long-haired captain.
  • Irony: The impatient Hot-Blooded Blood Knight with No Indoor Voice Squalo's Deathperation Flames are the tranquil Rain-class.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Although he is very devoted to Xanxus, he does get irritated with the abuse and annoyance with him and the other Varia members at times.
  • The Dragon: For Xanxus, as he's the most devoted out of them, barring Levi, and is willing to help him become the Vongola Boss after seeing how powerful he really is.
  • Large Ham: He's loud-mouthed and shouts all the time, even if he is supposed to be on a covert mission. This is how LARGE it is.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Wears his hair long as a promise to his boss never to cut it.
  • Master Swordsman: He killed the first Varia Boss and Sword Emperor, Tyr, when he was just fourteen. And in the Future Arc, he challenged and beat one hundred swordsmen in a row to earn himself the title "Second Sword Emperor". He didn't count his one hundredth battle because he suspected Genkishi lost on purpose.
  • Meaningful Name: "Superbi" is "Pride" in Italian, while "Squalo" is "Shark". Two motifs for the price of one name!
  • Made of Iron: This probably explains why he shrugs off most of Xanxus' abuse and how he survived being eaten by a shark.
  • Mysterious Past: There are some hints about his childhood in the drama CD "Bucking Horse and Shark", and this understandably piqued the curiosity of some fans, but his past hasn't been explored in detail.
  • No Indoor Voice: He even has the well-deserved title of the loudest mafia member, according to Fuuta's ranking. However, interestingly enough, he momentarily lowered his voice to a whisper when Haru was interviewing him.
  • No One Could Survive That!: This guy was eaten by a shark, maimed by Zakuro, had his heart pierced by Jager and lived to tell the tale.
  • Odd Friendship: With just about anyone the loud, Hot-Blooded Squalo can be considered friends with, but particularly the easygoing, clumsy Dino and Camp Gay Keet Lussuria.
  • Only Sane Man: Not really normal, but amongst Varia officers, he is the sanest and most level-headed one.
  • Odd Friendship: He's somewhat friends with the good-natured Dino and Yamamoto. In the latter's case, he can see the other's potential to be a hitman and begrudgingly gives him tips to improve himself.
  • The Promise: He promised to grow his hair out until Xanxus became the Vongola Boss, but still kept growing it out when Tsuna became the boss in the Future Arc.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: His TYL self is implied to be one to Yamamoto, as the latter's bruises in the Choice Arc can attest.
  • Southpaw Advantage: Added to being a prodigy swordsman, being left handed makes it difficult for most swordsmen to parry his attacks.
  • The Strategist: He's the Strategy Captain for the Varia during the Future Arc.
  • Team Mom: According to Mammon note , anyway. This role more belongs to Lussuria, though.
  • Threatening Shark: He almost got eaten by a shark after the Rain battle, but survived. Ironically, his box weapon animal turns out to be a shark.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Xanxus, for whom Squalo is incredibly devoted to. Xanxus laughed about Squalo getting eaten by a shark, and Squalo still works for him and still refuses to divulge Xanxus's secrets.
  • Unexplained Recovery: A few bandages and a few days rest after getting nommed by a shark and he's fit to randomly show up at the Sky Battle. Granted, he was covered with bandages and sitting in a wheelchair, with a Cavallone grunt holding a gun to his head. It might be more of a case of "forced to be there..."
  • With Catlike Tread: For someone who's an elite assassin, you will pretty much always hear Squalo before you see him. This even extends to scenes he's in. Not that it matters, though, since he'll cut you down before you know it.

    Belphegor

Belphegor

Voiced by: Yuuki Fujiwara (Japanese), Gwang-Guk Kim (Korean) Brandon McInnis (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/belphegorfull2585892.png
Prince the Ripper.

  • Always Second Best: To Rasiel. The only time he won against him was by poisoning him with laxatives.
  • Ax-Crazy: Becomes obsessed with winning once he sees his own blood. And even then, all he wants to do is to hurt people.
  • Blood Upgrade: Not really an upgrade. But once he sees his own blood, he becomes more sadistic and bloodthirsty.
  • Child Prodigy: He always had a natural killing instinct and became a Varia officer at the age of eight.
  • Cain and Abel: His case is a Double Subversion. He was the younger brother that killed his older brother because he saw him as a cockroach. However, his older brother is actually more vain and sadistic than he is.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin:
    • He tends to have this as his default face, along with making one when he laughs his creepy "Ushishishishi~" laugh.
    • Notice how his default outfit is actually a purple striped shirt? And how in one omake he's considered a house pet in the Varia? Looks like the resemblance isn't just the smile.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: He gets thrilled at the sight of his own blood and seemed eager to turn Gokudera "into a cactus."
  • Creepy Twins: With his older brother Rasiel. Both of them are violent with cool, collected personalities who take delight in massacre and death.
  • Evil Laugh: "Ushishishishi~"
  • Evil Prince: Well, morally ambiguous prince. The Varia is more or less on Tsuna's side after the Ring arc, but the prince Bel still delights in slaughter.
  • Enemy Mine: Arguably to Gokudera, when Belphegor saved him and told him how he is not a good enough storm guardian.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Puzzling how he can see after all that frizz that's covering his eyes.

    Lussuria

Lussuria

Voiced by: Kouichirou Yuzawa (Japanese), Ju-Chang Lee (Korean) David Wald (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lussuria_reborn.jpg

  • Badass Longcoat: Customizes his Varia jacket to look like this, even has feathers on the collar.
  • Badass Teacher: Implied to be one since Ryohei learns his footwork in the future.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Don't buy too much into his ridiculously bright looks and "mother of Varia" shenanigans. He's as ruthless and sadistic as the rest of his team.
  • Boxing Battler: His preferred style is Muay Thai.
  • Camp Gay: The most well known one in the series with his flamboyant attitude and hair. His subordinates even call him Big Sis Lussuria.
  • Combat Medic: Becomes this in the future, aided by his pet peacock Pea-chan.
  • Cool Shades: That become Sunglasses at Night since he never removes it. It actually gives him a noticeable advantage against Ryohei in their fight, since they are fighting until blinding lighting.
  • Depraved Homosexual: Towards Ryohei. It starts getting ever so slightly disturbing when he's hitting on jail bait and is insinuated to have necrophiliac tendencies as well. In his words, his favorite bodies are the "wasted, cold, unmoving" ones. Unfortunately, Ryohei goes topless during his fight against Lussuria and this only serves to make Lussuria his hardcore fanboy. In fact, Lussuria actually openly ogles Ryohei's muscular physique and refers to his body as "pretty nice", says that he's "just his type" and promptly decides to take him home and make him a part of his "collection" after he beats him up.
  • Healing Factor: Is the Varia's go to healer whenever they are injured, but has to cut their hair and trim their nails after.
  • I'm Taking Her Home with Me!: Wanted to do this with Ryohei following the Sun Ring battle. Or more specifically, Ryohei's corpse.
  • Keet: Always upbeat and ready to lighten up the mood in a group of serious and bloodthirsty assassins.
  • Team Mom: He takes pretty good care of the Varia, healing them when injured and giving advice. He even designates himself as the Team Mom of the Varia, although he states that the "dad" is Xanxus.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Starts out in his battle with Ryohei acting very flamboyant and confident, but once his knee was broken, Lussuria became anxious and was pleading for battle to continue just not to be killed by Xanxus.

    Leviathan

Leviathan

Voiced by: Yuto Nakano (Japanese), Yeong-Jun Si (Korean) Bill Butts (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/levi_0_2524.jpg

  • The Brute: Heavyset and pretty merciless when it comes to dealing with opponents, even kids.
  • Carpet of Virility: Not so much in the anime, where he was shown to be pretty clean-shaven, but in the manga it's revealed that Levi has a generous amount of chest hair.
  • The Comically Serious: Overlaps with his Butt-Monkey status. Levi is very stern and no-nonsense, but gets into the humiliating situations more than any other Varia member.
  • Gonk: Not really that ugly (still prettier than Longchamp and his girlfriends) but just compare him to the rest of the Cast Full of Pretty Boys.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Well, the guy is supposed to represent Envy. He is very jealous of how close Squalo seems to be to Xanxus (or anyone who gets praise from Xanxus), although he doesn't seem to want Squalo's job.
  • Hate Sink: He wasn't a nice guy to begin with, but so was the rest of Varia. However, he's the only one who's gotten progressively worse and written to be as unlikable as possible.
  • Humble Goal: Mammon even once said that Levi's diligence makes him suitable for Squalo's position, second-in-command of the Varia. Levi declined the idea, saying that his only concern is doing a good job and keep boss satisfied enough, to get him praised. It may be humble, but not that easy to achieve, considering Xanxus' personality.
  • The Klutz: According to Mammon, Levi is the clumsiest one among Varia officers.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is actually 'Leviathan', the biblical demon of Envy.
  • Parasol of Pain: Uses his parabolic umbrellas to channel lightning and direct it to his enemies.
  • Shock and Awe: As the Lightning Guardian of the Varia. Levi's attacks all revolve around lightning.
  • Stalker with a Crush: One of the anime omakes shows that Levi would gladly follow his beloved boss even to the bedroom.
  • Umbrellas Are Lightning Rods: That's how his weapons work, floating in the air to attract lightning and guide it towards his enemies.
  • Unknown Rival: It's quite subtle but Levi has a minor rivalry with Squalo. During the Varia arc, there's a scene where Squalo declares that he can easily beat all of Tsuna's guardians, and Levi pointedly glares at him. On both of the occasions when Squalo was thought to be dead, Levi was clearly happy. However, Squalo doesn't seem to care about Levi at all, one way or the other.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Non-parental example. His main motivation to fight is a desperate need for approval from Xanxus.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Definitely enjoys torturing Lambo in the Lightning battles without any remorse. He could have easily taken the ring from the child, but he wanted to give a show for his boss so...

    Mammon (Viper)

    Gola Mosca

Gola Mosca

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/golamoska.png
At first, Mosca was the most mysterious member of the Varia, never speaking a word and hiding his face at all times. As his team's Cloud Guardian, he fought Hibari for the Cloud Ring, but fell to a single attack from his opponent. It was then that his true identity was revealed: Gola Mosca is actually a prototype weapon that Varia stole from the Vongola HQ. It's a combat robot that feeds on the flame energy of anyone who is placed inside it, and will stop at nothing to complete its objective. As such, it's the main piece for the completion of Xanxus's plans.
  • Arm Cannon: Has a lot of missiles and lasers that he shoots in battle.
  • Caped Mecha: Covered with a cape as a way to hide its robotic compartments.
  • Gas Mask Mooks: It only looks like he's wearing a gas mask, but that's really his face.
  • I Let You Win: Gets down in one hit in its fight against Hibari. Reborn notes that it could have easily killed Hibari and the others while it was rampaging, and this clues him to Xanxus' plans.
  • Lightning Bruiser: It's easy when you have rockets on your back.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: Actually, powered by the 9th Vongola Boss.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: He is Gluttony because he takes his power from feeding on people that are stored inside him. Also, since his Animal Motif is the fly, as his name (Mosca being Italian for fly) and vaguely fly-like gas mask suggest, he alludes to Beelzebub, also known as the Lord of the Flies and, depending on the source, demon of Gluttony.
  • The Voiceless: He's only capable of making some robotic noises.

    Fran

Fran

Voiced by: Sachi Kokuryu (Japanese), Bo-Yeong Kim (Korean)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fran_manga.jpg
The newest officer member of the Varia in the future who uses a Hell Ring with the numbers "666" imprinted on it. Introduced during the Varia attack on a Millefiore base in Italy, Fran is Mammon's replacement as the group's illusionist and is thus forced to wear a large frog hat to symbolize this. Fran has a calm demeanor despite being very antagonistic towards the other members of the Varia, verbally attacking them. He can be sarcastic, coldly abusive, and very, very blunt. Fran is portrayed as a level-headed coward, that prefers running rather than fighting. He occasionally forgets that he is the Varia's illusionist and is supposed to see through the illusions that enemies set up, making vague references to the fact that he has a master. He is often teamed up with Bel, whom he calls "senpai." Fran is actually quite talented in illusions, being able to make it seem like he and Bel died fighting Rasiel. There seems to be more to him than meets the eye with Fran; when Bel embedded knives into his back, he didn't even bleed, and simply took out the knives, bending and disposing of them.

He later appears again in the The Curse of the Rainbow Arc where his present counterpart is recruited to join the Kokuyo Gang by Mukuro.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Although he wears a giant frog hat and cracks a lot of jokes, he is still one of the three people in the world capable of tricking the Vindice.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Is one of the most powerful illusionists in the world and one of the three capable of fooling the Vindice. But he'd rather not hang around with the weird pineapple heads and have to be coerced into fighting a lot.
  • Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys: French, a coward, and had a weird memory incident with cheese. He pretty much is this trope.
  • Child Prodigy: In a later chapter it is shown that he's been able to do complicated illusions ever since he was very young, even before he was trained by Mukuro.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: The Fran in the present day seems like one, thinking everyone around him is a fairy, and telling Mukuro (the "Pineapple Fairy") that due to him being there "everything in this place reeks of pineapples!"
  • Curtains Match the Window: With his Teal hair and eyes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Snarks everyone around in his monotonous voice. His first appearance is him snarking Squalo, Belphegor and Levi without so much as a flinch with their death threats.
  • Facial Markings: Has some triangle markings under his eyes.
  • Free-Range Children: Was this as a kid, playing in areas where he could've gotten seriously hurt without proper supervision.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Is this for the Varia, as he's only seen as a replacement for Mammon. The others even fight on who gets to babysit him as his snarky behavior enrages them all.
  • Genre Savvy: Likes to explain other people's attacks because "that's the way it works". He can even break the Fourth Wall, prompting Bel to ask who he's talking to.
  • Gratuitous English: To the point he refers to himself as "mii".
  • Human Pincushion: Repeatedly stabbed by Bel's knives and Mukuro's trident. His reaction? To carry on with the deadpan.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Manages to get out of the Millefiore mission by using the "I'm going to see a girl" excuse, much to Squalo's shock. In reality, he was helping Mukuro escape, but he did end up meeting up with the girl anyway. Though, It was M.M, not W.W.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Present day Fran is unable to remember any of the Future arc as a result of getting pummeled in the head by a block of cheese.
  • Master of Illusion: He is Mukuro's apprentice and he's stated to be one of the best illusionists in the future arc, even fooling the Vindice.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Happens in an interview with Lussuria, after he reveals the only reason he stayed was because he wanted to see how strong Xanxus was. He promptly shot him down, though.
  • Nature Lover: Has shades of this, spending his time off relaxing by lakes and growing up playing in forests. His character song even has him describing a forest as his wonderland.
  • Not So Stoic: Present day Fran doesn't react well when the Vindice guards show up to the Arcobaleno battle.
  • Odd Friendship: Has one going on with Ken in the present if extra material is any indication, though Future Fran also seems to be on positive terms with him, also calling him nii-san.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Has smiled only once so far (during the "Good job" scene), and it's likely he was sarcastic about it.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: In the present arc, it was revealed that his future self didn't exactly hide his hatred of how Lussuria presents and acts as it was one of the few things that Lussuria, who couldn't even remember his face, remembered about him.
  • Ship Tease: In the present arc, a small, one-sided variant of this occurs when Present Fran gets yelled at by Chrome, resulting in the odd reaction of him asking her for a kiss.
  • Sociopathic Hero: Although he seems to be on the good side, Future Fran isn't exactly a nice guy and pisses off even the Varia enough that their present selves had no clue why Squalo wanted him to join again. He also seems to be mainly motivated by seeing strong people fight.
  • The Stoic: Fran rarely shows any emotion besides "vaguely bored".
  • Taking the Bullet: Does this for Mukuro when Ghost arrives, standing in front of him and taking the brunt of an attack that had just killed someone by sucking out her flames. He was okay, though.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: What type of kid swings a two year old around by the wrists and threatens to cause damage to his frontal lobe?
