The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

From Pauley Perrette:

This is on a YMMV page for a creator, so is there any way of rewriting it into a trope that could be put on the creator's main page?

Bringing up the following examples from Hilarious in Hindsight:

  • The poem For Heidi with Blue Hair by Fleur Adcock seems uncomfortable now considering it mentions "twittering", which to today's audiences, has different connotations than it did at the time of publishing...
  • Longfellow's The Jewish Cemetery at Newport which discusses the plight of the Jews, ends with the stanza "But ah! what once has been shall be no more! / The groaning earth in travail and in pain / Brings forth its races, but does not restore, / And the dead nations never rise again." He did not foresee the creation of the modern State of Israel.
  • In the short and little-known Shel Silverstein poem "Description", one character insist that God is black, another that God is female. It becomes this after "I Met God, She's Black became a popular slogan for T-shirts.

[up] The third one also seems like a shoehorn. God being perceived as black, or even as a woman, isn't a new thing, and the parts about God being black or female aren't even the focus of the poem.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Keep the middle two, although the only one I get is the "testicle" example.

From what is usually considered the worst superhero flick of the 90s, here's from Batman & Robin:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Robert Swenson who played Bane in this film died of heart failure, like Freeze's wife. — Sounds like another real-life death issue, nevermind the fact that neither character actually died in the film itself. IIRC Freeze's wife is a Human Popsicle for the entirety of her screentime
    • In this movie, Alfred falls ill and an A.I. is made in his place. If Cyborg were here and Alfred really snuffed it, it’d be exactly like the Murder Machine’s origin story. — Uhh, Fan Myopia?

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • When Ivy, in her guise as Pamela Isley, is about to kiss (and kill) Commissioner Gordon, she stops and tells him "On second thought, you're way too old for me." At one point in her life, Uma Thurman was married to Gary Oldman, who portrays the younger Gordon during his early career in Christopher Nolan's Batman series. — ???
    • In this film, Arnold Schwarzenegger tries to kill Batman. In Terminator Salvation, he gets a second chance to kill Batman. — Except the Arnie from Terminator 4 isn't the REAL Arnie, but a CGI-recreation, and that Schwarzenegger isn't physically present in the entirety of Terminator 4. I get the reference, but it sounds really shoehorned.
    • Robin's costume in this film looks like Nightwing's, except with the emblem in red and a cape. The New 52 reboot didn't give Nightwing a cape, but changed the bird symbol's color from blue to red. — ???
    • Bane falling in love with the female Big Bad and becoming her mook is very similar to The Dark Knight Rises. — Sounds like a forced shoehorn.
    • Two decades after this movie came another movie in which Batman is a major protagonist, in which starred the other actor who played Conan, this time as an ally instead of the Big Bad. — Another shoe-horn
    • In the films comic book adaptation, Batman and Robin's fight has a panel where Bruce slugs Dick, with the composition being eerily similar to the famous "Batman slaps Robin" meme, which became a very popular meme several years after the movies release. — This trivia is from the comics, and not present in the film itself. Should it even be here?
    • You can apply Bane in The Dark Knight Rises saying "Do you accept this man's resignation" to Joel Schumacher. — Shoe-horn
    • Batman would presumably have to use the Bat Credit Card to make withdrawals from Wayne Enterprises. Assuming Bruce has a separate account for his Bat Credit Card, it would show up one Wayne Enterprises' computers that Batman was making cash withdrawals from Bruce Wayne's joint account. Guess that explains how Coleman Reese put two-and-two together in The Dark Knight. Amazing nobody cottoned on sooner really. — ... wat.

I skimmed through Young Justice, and -to my surprise- the examples are actually kind of ok. They mainly use connections from the series instead of actor related shoehorning, X invented Y, etc. Still, there's some stretches here and there, and the decent examples should be brought here just in case they're not-so-decent:

    SPOILERS AHOY!
  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:
    • Try reading these lines of dialogue after Wally dies in the season two finale.
Robin: (referring to Wally being in school) A moment of silence for our absent comrade.
    M'gann: Poor Wally...
Eeeh, not sure. It seems valid but the quote doesn't feel "serious enough" for a connection. Maybe that's just me being too serious though, Wally's death hurt like a bitch.
  • Beast Boy telling Nightwing "No faking anyone's death for at least a year!" in "Summit"? Hilarious. After the next episode, where Kid Flash dies? Not so much. This feels like a stretch. Dick had nothing to do with Wally's death. While it is possible Wally isn't actually dead, his death wasn't faked as part of a plan or anything.
  • In addition: in the debut episode of Impulse, much fun is made of the fact that KF Can't Catch Up to Impulse and The Flash when it comes to speed. In "Endgame", that inability to catch up results in his death. Keep. That aged like milk.

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • In "Downtime" (aired March 4, 2011) Superman tells Aquaman that "The Justice League have a problem in Tokyo". A week later, Japan was hit by a devastating earthquake. Stretch. The Justice League didn't deal with an earthquake. Also, the earthquake wasn't the JL's problem because they aren't real (unfortunately).
    • Most of Red Arrow's bits about how he can't trust [certain team member] because anyone might be The Mole becomes this by the end of "Usual Suspects" since it's him, and his tone of voice as he realizes this implies that he realizes that he was programmed to put suspicion on the new heroes, to turn suspicion away from himself. Seems valid.
    • In "Infiltrator", Artemis says to Red Arrow, "Step into the light!" Oh Artemis, you have no idea... Eh, feels like a stretch. He was used as the Light's puppet, but he never actually worked for them willingly, he just had an identity crisis.
    • In "Terrors", when M'gann and Connor are disguised as Belle Reve inmates Tommy and Tuppence Terror and are attending a therapy session with Hugo Strange, M'gann tries to help out Connor's issues with how much Superman, his biological father, has been avoiding him by trying to bring up "father figure issues" that "Tommy" has, but Connor winds up snapping back that he doesn't want to live in her "stupid fantasy world where every problem's solved in half an hour". We then get a brief glimpse of an extremely hurt expression from M'gann before she turns away in a mix of guilt and discomfort. It's not until the later episode "Image", where we find out that M'gann has modeled her entire Earth identity on an old TV sitcom she used to watch obsessively, that we realize just how deep that comment accidentally cut. I guess??? Something about this doesn't feel right. Might need to be trimmed if it's valid.
    • Actually not that accidental: In "Bereft", Miss Martian's mind repair on Superboy is later revealed to have done "too much at once" and given him knowledge of her White Martian nature. Clips from Hello, Megan can also be seen during the mind repair, showing that he learned about that too. What? I think this example is commenting on the previous one, instead of offering something new. This can be purged for Natter.
    • In "Disordered", Dick Grayson expresses trauma over thinking like Batman and making huge risks/sacrifices, explicitly stating "that's not me." By "Darkest", he's pulling off gambits so unstable that the one person in the loop gives him a What the Hell, Hero? speech. Not sure about this one. This seems valid, it just feels "too predictable" to count for hindsight.
    • In "Darkest", Wally starts doubting whether or not Aqualad really is a Fake Defector as they think he is. Come "Before The Dawn", it's revealed that he is, and always has been, on their side via Mind Rape, courtesy of Miss Martian. Feels like a stretch. I don't think it was really "revealed", just that the other characters didn't know.
    • In "Welcome to Happy Harbor", M'gann is hesitant to use her telepathic powers on Mr. Twister after using them on the other Team members. Dick/Robin tells her "It's okay to use it on the bad guys!" and she runs with it. By Season 2, she may have taken this a little too far...Valid? I can see the connection, but the context with Mr. Twister was mind reading, not mind rape. That feels like too small of a distinction to render this example invalid, though.
    • Wally not being as fast as the Flash or Impulse. In Endgame, it kills him. This was already under FAM, and I think it fits better there than Harsher.
    • Also, Wally tells Bart in "Summit" that he's gonna retire after all this is over. He retires, all right. Permanently. Keep? This one feels too predictable, especially considering Wally just gave the mantle of Kid Flash to Bart.
    • Also relating to "Endgame", the hashtag for the Twitter storm for that week was "#Heroes Never Die". Not sure, it feels valid but this example and the retirement one feel "too predictable" to count for Hindsight. You don't use a hashtag like that and not have someone die.

Heartwarming in Hindsight: When the Scarab controlling Blue Beetle fights Impulse and Batgirl, he uses the Nail 'Em attack to pin them against the wall relatively uninjured. At the beginning of the season, the Scarab would advise Jaime to shoot through bone. It seems to have learned some compassion from Jaime since then. Pretty sure this can be cut. The way this is written seems like Hindsight for the fight against Impulse and Batgirl instead of the other way around. Also, I'm pretty sure the scarab being less violent was because The Reach was losing their effect on it, not because it learned compassion.

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In a funny coincidence, this version of Superboy was introduced at the same time that Smallville was doing its own Superboy storyline, and the reactions of the respective Supermen to the existence of Superboy could not be more opposite. Feels too loose of a connection.
    • In "Bereft," Robin wakes up without his memories of the last six months, and yells "In September?! What happened to March?" "Bereft" was the last episode aired before the six month hiatus... in March. "Targets" didn't officially premiere until... September. Keep?
    • Miss Martian tells Superboy to "Stop behaving like a character in a 70s Sitcom" during "Alpha Male", then several episodes pass, and during "Image", this is shown to be Hypocritical Humor as we learn that her entire personality and appearance is based around that of a 70s Sitcom character. Not to mention that Conner's name -which she suggested- is the name of her character's boyfriend from the same show. Keep?
    • From issue #45 of the Teen Titans tie-in comics, one of the campers suggests that Beast Boy might be of Martian origin because he's green and shape-shifts. Beast Boy's counterpart in Young Justice got his powers and green skin from receiving a blood transfusion from Miss Martian. Keep? If this is valid, it should go on the YMMV page for Teen Titans instead.
    • Dick's retort that "The Batcave is crowded enough already" to the offer of being cloned in Season 1, only for the Time Skip between the two seasons to establish Barbara as Batgirl and introduce Tim as the latest Robin, with Jason having died in between. Continues in season 3 as Stephanie is now Spoiler after briefly appearing last season, Jason is alive, and Cass/Orphan/Batgirl and Damian are introduced. Seems legit.
    • A preceding Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) is famous for his very close friendship with time traveler Booster Gold. Come Young Justice and the current Blue Beetle has a developing bromance with another time traveler, Impulse. If this is valid then it should go on Blue Beetle's page, not YJ. Something about this doesn't feel right. If the connection is strong enough then I think this should go somewhere else, something that's kinda like Mythology Gag but not really. I'm pretty sure we have it, I just don't know what it's called.
    • The episode "War" starts off with Superman not understanding the Rimbor judge's alien language. The Green Lantern: The Animated Series episode that aired alongside this, "Babel", focused on Hal not understanding Kilowog and Razer's alien languages for nearly the entire episode. Too loose of a connection.
    • Assuming the Runaways' name really is a Shout-Out to the Marvel team of the same name, there were some amusing coincidences later on. Members of YJ's Runaways were introduced in Beneath, an episode featuring an all-female mission, and their leader later got to join the Team, which is basically a sister team of Justice League. In 2015 the (second) leader of Marvel's Runaways joined A-Force, an all-female sister team of Marvel's equivalent to the JL, the Avengers... that, according to Word of God, was directly inspired by a conversation Nightwing and Batgirl had in Beneath.
I remember watching one of the DCU animated cartoons a couple years ago where they put together a team of female heroines to go fight a villainess. I think it was Dick Grayson who was talking to them on screen and he was saying something like they couldn’t send any male heroes to fight this villainess because she can control the minds of men. I believe it was Batgirl who sassed him back and essentially said, “Why are you trying to justify having a team of only women? No one would ever try to validate sending a team of only men.”
Something about this doesn't feel right. The connection feels strong enough but also doesn't? It also feels speculative and rambly. ("female heroines" is redundant. Heroines are already female. Jfc, get it together Marvel. /j)
  • In a 2001 issue of Wizard Magazine the casting-call section had then-current Titans writer Jay Faerber suggest Kelly Hu play Cheshire in a live-action Teen Titans film. Guess who ended up providing her voice in this ten years later? Hooh boy. This isn't hindsight because the magazine came before the YJ cartoon. This is Young Justice, not Teen Titans. Young Justice is animated, not live-action, as well as being a series and not a movie. This is also actor related shoehorning.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I don't think Wally being absent in Infiltrator would count as FAM/Harsher because him being absent has nothing to do with death. He had school when everyone else was at the beach. The circumstances make the connection feel too loose

EDIT 2: Just realized it mentioned that already in the example. Reading is dead and my brain is fried.

What about the Longfellow example [up][up][up][up][up][up]?

Also bringing up the following example from Years and Years:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The news of Trump winning the 2020 election amid allegations of voter fraud in Florida (likely taking some basis from Bush v. Gore) can come across as this due to the fact that Trump lost the 2020 election and himself made allegations of voter fraud (though not in states he had won, such as Florida).

From YMMV.Diary Of A Wimpy Kid:

  • The concept of Rowley’s comic “Zoo-Wee-Mama” somewhat precedes the popular webcomic Webcomic Name, both of which always have a character proclaiming a repeated phrase to serve as a punchline of each strip. Seems more coincidental than anything.
  • In The Last Straw, Greg said that in the future, everyone will have a personal robot that tells you whatever you need to know. Virtual assistants and smart speakers, anyone? Maybe? The book came out in 2009 though, so it might be more a case of Technology Marches On.
  • In the first movie, Rowley rejects Greg's offer to get ice cream. Fast forward to the next time he ran into ice cream... I gave this a search and the episode is about Capron's character searching for an ice cream truck. I think this could be kept, even though actor hindsight examples aren't looked upon well?
  • On top of that, Rowley breaks his arm. Robert Capron would later play another character in a Haunting Hour episode who breaks his arm...and then ANOTHER one who does so. Seems coincidental.
  • In Cabin Fever, Rowley asks Greg if he wants to build a snowman. Coincidental.
  • In Double Down, Greg is planning on making a movie. What's next, befriending a girl with leukemia against his will? Uh... what?
  • In the expanded do-it-yourself book, there's a section called Diary of an Awesome, Friendly Kid which showcases some diary entries from Rowley's perspective. Eight years later, it would become a fully-fledged book. This doesn't seem like the trope for this.
  • Geese being unusually aggressive in Double Down becomes much funnier after a certain indie game gave geese a Memetic Psychopath status. Unsure? I'd say keep but I'm not sure if "geese are jerks" was a popular trope known before Untitled Goose Game shot it into the mainstream.
  • A comic strip called Wacky Dawg stopped being funny when the creator started using the dog character as a mouthpiece to voice his own personal opinions. Sound familiar? This also seems to be the case with the books themselves in the eyes of several longtime readers. Seems too universal, since that could be applied to anything.
  • In the second movie, Rowley lip-syncs Tik Tok. Later, along comes the app of the same name that is known for videos of people lip-syncing songs. Unsure about this one.
  • In The Long Haul, Greg suggests that the family rent an RV to carry their stuff in on the trip. This is shot down by Susan due to the gas mileage that RVs get. In The Deep End, the family uses Uncle Gary's RV for their road trip. Keep?
  • Rodrick was misspelling "sweetie" as "sweaty" before it became a meme. Unsure.

This was added to YMMV.Veggie Tales.

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Eric Metaxes' involvement with the series becomes a lot bitter in 2021 after political differences between him and Phil Vischer, which resulted not only Phil, but also any family members blocked from his Twitter. Phil felt upset about it after being good friends with him since 1999.

YMMV.Maleficent has a bunch of entries, and most of them are iffy:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Prior to this film, Elle Fanning had starred in the film Ginger and Rosa, wherein her character Ginger grew increasingly fearful of dying due to Mutually Assured Destruction. At one point her character breaks down, saying, "I don't want to die! I want to grow up and do things!" Said words could also accurately describe Aurora's sadness in the third act of the film, only in relation to her death sleep.
This would probably belong on the page of Ginger and Rosa that we don't seem to have.
  • One of the interviews on the film's Blu-Ray has Jolie mention an argument her kids had over whether or not Maleficent was evil. If anything, it can be seen as a microcosm of the fandom's Broken Base.
Does fandom stuff count as Harsher in Hindsight?
  • Prince Philip is often cited as the first Disney Prince to be proactive and have some significant Character Development. Here, however, he's derailed to make Maleficent's love seen more powerful than his own (albeit justified in-narrative as Philip himself admits he doesn't know Aurora well enough yet where Maleficent has been indirectly raising her for years).
Maybe this can be moved to YMMV.Sleeping Beauty after some trimming but I'm not sure.
  • Walt Disney's original treatment of the fairies was for them to be Single Minded Triplets. He was persuaded to make them more unique and distinguished — and the original film has been praised for its diverse female characters. Come this movie and the three fairies are all interchangeable and incompetent.
Maybe this can be moved to YMMV.Sleeping Beauty after some trimming but I'm not sure.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In Sleeping Beauty, Flora and Merryweather argued over whether Aurora's dress should be pink or blue. Most official media for that film portrays Aurora wearing pink. Then comes this film, and Aurora's main dress (the one she wears during the final battle) is blue.
Maybe this can be moved to YMMV.Sleeping Beauty but I'm not sure.
  • In Sleeping Beauty, Fauna suggests that they attempt to reason with Maleficent, suggesting she can't be all bad. She's of course, hilariously wrong on this point for that depiction, but then comes this film, in which Maleficent is most certainly not pure evil.
Maybe this can be moved to YMMV.Sleeping Beauty after some trimming but I'm not sure.
  • In 2013, a Disney fan made a Chicago parody called Spell Block Tango. The video included Maleficent, who was in love with Stefan until they broke up due to "artistic differences". A similar scenario ends up happening in the film.
This would probably belong on the page of that parody if only there was such a page.
  • Just like the original film, Aurora turning sixteen is a huge plot point. This film came out May 2014, a month after Elle Fanning herself turned sixteen.
Does this count?
  • This isn't the first time one of the Fanning sisters encountered a dangerous fairy who serves as a mother-like figure. To be fair to Maleficent, though, she turns out to be a much better parental figure than the Other Mother. Even better, Coraline was a British girl in the book, but was made to be American in the film version, just like Dakota, whereas Aurora is played by equally American Elle using an English accent.
This one seems legit.
Maybe this can be moved to YMMV.Dumbo if such jokes count.
  • Ella Purnell briefly plays the teenage Maleficent - a fairy whose wings are unwillingly stolen from her. Her next big role is the film adaptation of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - where she plays a girl who can float lighter than air and has to weigh herself down with heavy boots.
This one seems legit.

From Conan

  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: In a December 2017 episode with James Franco and Ari Graynor promoting The Disaster Artist, the former mentioned how inspired he was to make the film upon reading the book version, to which Conan jokes "You actually read a book? You're kicked out of Hollywood!" Less than two months later, Franco appears to be on his way to this due to exposure of his past sexual misconduct.Speculative and recent troping
    • The Running Gag of Wilford Brimley grumpily answering "Dammit, I'm still alive!" in Celebrity Survey is now this, due to the actor's death in 2020.Actor mortality
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Jon Cryer appeared on the show and cracked about how he had to watch "TMZ to see if I'll be going to work that day"., referring to the frequent troubles of his Two and a Half Men co-star Charlie Sheen. Guess who was hospitalized merely a day later, stopping production on the show and kicking off a downward spiral that finally led to him being fired?"Guess who...?" entry. Might be valid, but would need to be rewritten
    • For years, Conan joked about Caitlyn (then Bruce) Jenner with two recurring themes: his plastic surgeries and him looking particularly feminine. Come 2015, and it turns out only one of those is supposed to be a joke.???
    • The sketches with Watson implying that he had an affair with Andy's wife can be looked at in a different light, since Andy and Sarah Thyre actually got divorced in 2019.Did she leave him for a robot? Because that was the joke. Maybe if it was immediately after the episode aired or even a few months, but that's an eight year gap

[up] The Caitlyn Jenner one is a Running Gag about her getting plastic surgery and looking feminine before she came out as a trans woman, which I'd say could count.

YMMV.South Park S 7 E 1 Cancelled was created with this entry:

The idea of Simpsons doing something after South Park might be funny because of the "Simpsons did it" meme, but I don't know if South Park itself is the first one to really do the "Earth is an alien reality show" plot.
