Himitsu Sentai Gorengers, the Shonen Beginning

    General Tropes
  • Adaptational Wimp: With the exception of Yugi, the team swaps out their incredible powers for Super Sentai capabilities which, given Shonen Jump logic, are likely far less powerful.
  • Age Lift: With the exception of Ichigo, all the Gorengers go from being depicted as teenagers to being in their twenties.
  • Sole Survivor: Just like the original Gorengers. In a twist, these five weren't even there when the attacks happened. They were actually off-duty and off-site.
  • Super-Soldier: While the process of how they got their powers is never shown, it is mentioned that they were given a special serum that created their powers and enhanced their physical capabilities.

    Yugi Muto/Akarenger

Yugi Muto — Akarenger

  • Adaptational Badass: Not only did his home series not have any real fighting, but he himself left most of the conflicts up to Atem until the last few episodes. Here he's front and center in the middle of the action.
  • The Leader: Natch. Most Red Rangers are, after all.
  • Mythology Gag: He's noted to be an exceptional poker player. Not only does this harken back to his origin series involving card games, but there's even a YouTube video of Yu-Gi-Oh characters playing poker.
  • Remembered I Could Fly: During an incident where he was sure he would have to be sacrificed to stop a Black Cross plot, he admits he forgot that by that point the team had access to Varikikyun.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: To Temujin and Door Mask when they try to hold him accountable for killing several other Masked Monsters. He points out that by their logic members of the Black Cross Army should be tried for their actions in killing EAGLE troops.

    Yusuke Urameshi/Aorenger

Yusuke Urameshi — Aorenger

  • Ace Pilot: Flies both Variblune and Varidreen with amazing skill
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He's far less abrasive than in his home series. Justified in that he's portrayed as being older than canon.
  • Annoying Arrows: Averted. His skill with the Blue Cherry is such that he can one-shot Zolders by hitting them in their vital areas. Gets even better when he gains the Ultra Blue Cherry, which lets him fire off multiple arrows at once.
  • Companion Cube: He sees Variblune as a partner and mourns its destruction. He thinks the same of Varidreen and is enraged by the Black Cross Army framing it for one of their attacks.
  • Mythology Gag: He was taking part in a fighting tournament while off-duty when the Black Cross Army first attacked EAGLE. His home series has two different Tournament Arcs.

    Jotaro Kujo/Kirenger

Jotaro Kujo — Kirenger

  • Big Eater: Well he is a big guy. In the first episode alone he easily polishes off three large curry rice bowls, which if you've seen the show, are BIG.
  • The Comically Serious: He's just as stoic as ever, but he still brings the comedy in the form of some serious snark.
  • Composite Character: Unlike the other Gorengers, he actually takes on some qualities of his canon counterpart, Daita Oiwa, as well as few from Daigoro Kumano.
  • Genius Bruiser: As smart as he is strong. Heck, he's a little smarter than Daita, being capable of solving riddles with relative ease (something that always stumped Daita in canon).
  • Made of Iron: The attack from Can Opener Mask that killed Daigoro? Jotaro got hit with the same attack... And managed to survive. It was still a serious injury that required him to be taken to a nearby triage center, and the wound was still referenced the next chapter.
  • Mythology Gag: His girlfriend's name is Himari, which is based on a character from mtnetsurfer's other notable series JoJo New Universe.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Curry, much like Daita. He's quite the connoisseur too, to the point where Master Gon relies on him to taste test when teaching a class on making curry.
  • Trap Is the Only Option: He's not above falling into an enemy trap if it means he can use the opportunity to glean information.

    Medaka Kurokami/Momorenger

Medaka Kurokami — Momorenger

  • Adaptational Name Change: The Earring Bomb is given the more fitting name of Sakura Bomb.
  • Combat Hand Fan: Deployed one briefly against a brainwashed Kendo Mask.
  • Demolitions Expert: She's the one who created and tweaked both the Gorenger Storm and Gorenger Hurricane. Not to mentions dozens of her Sakura Bombs.
  • Foil: She and Peggy couldn't be more different, as she tends to act more rationally in situations that have gotten Peggy into trouble.
  • Master of Disguise: The first in the series, and skilled enough to fool an entire town taken over by the Black Cross Army.
  • Mythology Gag: She normally performs Calling Your Attacks when using her Sakura Bomb or the Gorenger Storm, yet both she and others sometimes reference Peggy Matsuyama's famous, "Are you ready? Here I go."

    Ichigo Kurosaki/Midorenger

Ichigo Kurosaki — Midorenger

  • The Baby of the Bunch: Unlike the other Gorengers, his age hasn't changed from his home series.
  • Hot-Blooded: He can act impulsively when facing the Black Cross Army, especially in the heat of battle.
  • Mythology Gag: He was attending a kendo tournament when his unit got attacked. His home series sees him as a sword wielder.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The only time he doesn't act recklessly is during his trial when Kettle Mask tried to frame him as a Black Cross spy. Ichigo calmly explained his side of the story, which made it easy for his attorney to argue that the "evidence" against him was fabricated.
  • Revenge: He was the most enraged when he learned his unit was killed and tried to hunt down Poison Gas Mask on his own. He quickly learned the necessity to act as part of a team.

JAKQ Dengekitai, the Compulsive Gamblers

    General Tropes
  • Amazon Brigade: Subverted. They certainly started as this when there were only four members, but that stopped when Ryota joined the team.
  • Cyborg: All the team is this, having been enhanced via cybernetic engines.
  • Jumped at the Call: Unlike the canon JAKQs, where Goro at first refused to become a member, all of them had no qualms about joining.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Due to their cybernetic bodies, they're all superhumanly strong despite their slender frames.

    Yumeko Jabami/Spade Ace

Yumeko Jabami — Spade Ace

  • Adaptational Heroism: Despite being the main character of her home series she's at best a Villain Protagonist, just as hedonistic and manipulative as those around her. Here she's more of an Anti-Hero, still being a compulsive gambler but having a genuine desire to protect those around her.
  • Atomic Superpower: Her atomic engine grants her incredible strength, speed, and senses. She can also fry the cybernetic Crimers using atomic discharges from her Spade Arts.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She's willing to gamble even with other people's lives, but only if they give consent. Otherwise she'll leave them out of her gambling addiction.
  • Insult Backfire: Don't bother trying to insult her by calling her a kakegurui (compulsive gambler). Not only does she take the title with pride, but her friends actually prefer her that way.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: During a race one of the racers (who happened to be an alternate version of her canon counterpart Goro Sakurai) admitted her beauty was very distracting.
  • Logical Weakness: Ironically, her atomic engine. If it gets damaged she's in danger of exploding. Luckily, she can switch to a secondary Sakuradite engine to stabilize herself until the engine can be repaired.
  • Official Couple: In this series she and Ryota became a couple at some point.
  • Too Awesome to Use: Kujirai certainly thought so at first. While he knew she was perfectly compatible with the atomic engine, the problem was her own clan, the Momobami, created it. Meaning CRIME could potentially target them if she became a member.

    Mary Saotome/Dia Jack

Mary Saotome — Dia Jack

  • Adaptational Badass: A standout example as she was this before becoming part of JAKQ, due to being a champion welterweight boxer.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: She gets along much better with the rest of the team.
  • Ambiguously Bi: She did make a small gamble to go on a date with a woman (specifically Devil Amazon in human disguise), though it was mostly to glean information about a target and she did note that dates aren't necessarily meant to be romantic.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Holds the distinction of being the first Sentai Ranger to use a sword, something that would later be more commonly associated with Red Rangers, and is as heroic as they came.
  • Shock and Awe: Her electric engine. It's the easiest of the engines to maintain, since any powerline can do the trick. She can also use it to charge her Mach Dia in a pinch, or charge her Dia Sword with electric slashes. She can even track people using an electric signal she passes on.

    Yumemi Yumemite/Heart Queen

Yumemi Yumemite — Heart Queen

  • Ascended Extra: She only got two major arcs in her home series and otherwise didn't interact much with the main cast. But here she's a major player among the team.
  • Badass Adorable: A perky pop sensation who also happens to be an expert martial artist and skilled police detective.
  • Badass in Distress: The final two episodes see her nearly killed when her magnetic engine is ruptured and Iron Claw does his best to keep her from getting repaired. Luckily, he fails.
  • Deadly Disc: She often uses her Heart Cute in this manner. It's even described as being a chakram.
  • Fair Cop: Before joining JAKQ she was both a police detective and a popular idol.
  • Magnetism Manipulation: Via her magnetic engine, which lets her toss around the cybernetic Crimers and redirect bullets mid-flight.
  • Shown Their Work: The reason she can stop bullets using her magnetic engine despite them being made of lead (a metal that can't be magnetized) is that typical bullets are stabilized with an iron core to avoid melting from the heat caused by the black powder in the shell casing. And iron is a metal that can be affected by magnetism. Yumemi herself even explains this the first time she pulls the trick off.

    Itsuki Sumeragi/Clover King

Itsuki Sumeragi — Clover King

  • Adaptational Origin Connection: With Bunta his submarine failing was just a freak accident. For Itsuki, it turns out CRIME was responsible, with Itsuki thinking she got too close to something they wanted to keep secret.
  • Ascended Extra: Like Yumemi, she has a much greater presence than she did in her home series.
  • Friend to All Children: She owns a prominent toy company and has stocks in Nintendo (not with video games due to the story taking place in 1976, a year before Nintendo started getting into video games), and as such works closely with kids and enjoys doing so.
  • Gravity Master: She can control localized gravity using her gravity engine, often sending Crimers flying into the sky with her Club Megaton.
  • Official Couple: With Kaede Manyuda, who eventually joins the group as a cook.
  • She Is the King: Despite being a woman, she still holds the title Clover King.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Unlike Bunta, who was brought Back from the Dead after suffering oxygen deprivation at the start of the series, Itsuki actually survived the submarine failure.

    Ryota Suzui/Big One

Ryota Suzui — Big One

  • Ascended Extra: Not Ryota himself, since he was actually a main character in his home series, but the Big One form. Sokichi Banba only used the form to fight in the last few episodes, while here Ryota fights as Big One quite regularly.
  • Adaptational Name Change: His weapon is now called the Ten Baton and his attack is changed to Thermal Finish.
  • Cool Bike: He actually gets his own personalized vehicle called the Ten Cycle.
  • Master of Disguise: He was trained in the art of disguise by Kujirai, and is skilled enough to even fool Iron Claw.
  • Official Couple: He's this with Yumeko, the two having hooked up at some point prior to the story.
  • Playing with Fire: He's equipped with a thermal engine, which he can use to charge his Ten Baton or power the team's Big Bomber.
  • The One Guy: The sole male member of what is otherwise an Amazon Brigade.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In-universe it's noted that Ryota wasn't so confident when the team went to school together. Mary even notes that it's like someone shoved a steel I-beam down his spine while fitting him for brass balls.

Battle Fever J, the Global Lagoon

    General Tropes
  • Adaptational Heroism: With the exception of Pip, all of them had connections to criminal organizations in canon (and even Pip had a habit of ditching a job if it turned out bad). Here they're all genuinely heroic individuals.
  • Bilingual Bonus: While each of them can speak English and Japanese just fine, Balalaika, Pip, and Dutch will often say something in their native language (Russian, French, and Swahili respectively).
  • Multinational Team: Done right this time. Unlike canon, where all the team was Japanese with maybe a bit of foreign blood (or at least trained overseas), each of these characters are from the country they represent.
  • Secret Identity: Had this at first, unlike the first two teams. That ultimately changed at the story's half-way mark.
  • These Hands Have Killed: They all admit to having taken humans lives prior to becoming heroes, due to being soldiers, mercenaries, and spies. Though they all regret it and strive to be better people, hence why they were still chosen by the Morphin Grid.

    Rokuro "Rock" Okujima/Battle Japan

Rock Okujima — Battle Japan

  • Adaptational Badass: Probably an even bigger one than Yugi. Rock not only has actual fighting skills, in this story he's a former member of the JSDF.
  • All-Loving Hero: He's got so many friends he could give Gentaro Kisaragi a run for his money. Unfortunately, some of them wind up getting entangled with Egos.
  • Number Two: He's often the one briefing the team on their next mission in General Tetsuzan's place, implying he's second in command at Big Baser.
  • Made of Iron: He's able to handle three days of torture from Earthworm Monster perverting a festival in his hometown just to torment him.
  • Official Couple: With Revy, one of Big Baser's Bridge Bunnies.

    Sofiya "Balalaika" Pavlovna/Battle Cossack

Balalaika — Battle Cossack

  • Adaptational Attractiveness: She hasn't yet gotten the scars she's well known for in canon, leaving her skin flawless. Subverted when she gets her canonical appearance during a fight with Eagle Monster.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: She actually managed to get into the Olympics in this story. Given the Alternate History that occurred due to the Black Cross Army's presence cutting the Cold War short, it's likely she had more time to attend.
  • Blemished Beauty: She does wind up getting heavy scarring when she's caught in an ambush by Eagle Monster while trying to protect a little girl.
  • She Is the King: Since "Miss Cossack" doesn't roll off the tongue very well, she's still called Battle Cossack.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Averted. Despite being a Soviet, she has no qualms working alongside Eda, an American. Then again, both are under the impression that Egos was the one behind the Cold War in the first place.

    Pip Bernadotte/Battle France

Pip Bernadotte — Battle France

  • Abled in the Adaptation: It's noted that he has both eyes in this story.
  • Balls of Steel: When Mechanical Doll Monster tries a Groin Attack against him, his reaction shows that it stung, but the special cup that's included in the Battle Suits prevented serious damage.
  • Canon Foreigner: An odd example, but he's the only team member who wasn't from Black Lagoon, instead coming from Hellsing. Justified in that Black Lagoon has no French characters, and Pip was the best Frenchmen to fit in with the rest.
  • Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkeys: HEAVILY averted! Pip is arguably one of the most badass Frenchmen out there.
  • It Has Been an Honor: He says this to the Wild Geese before leaving to join Battle Fever.
  • Official Couple: He eventually becomes a couple with Bridge Bunny Seras Victoria after the incident with Electric Monster.

    Dutch/Battle Kenya

Dutch — Battle Kenya

  • Adaptational Nationality: He's African-American in canon. This story drops the "American" part entirely.
  • Due to the Dead: After an old friend of his is killed by Egos, he takes the time to give him a simple funeral, complete with a beer offering.
  • Extreme Omnivore: He can eat anything considered edible. This is used against him at one point by Picky Eating Monster.
  • Friend to All Living Things: If he's not eating an animal, he's keeping it as a pet or at least communicating with it.
  • Nature Hero: Subverted in that he is acquainted with the modern world, but he's at his best when in the jungles or other forested areas (luckily Japan has no shortage of such environments).
  • One Name Only: Dutch is the only name he goes by.

    Edith "Eda" Blackwater/Miss America

Eda — Miss America

  • Adaptational Origin Connection: In canon Eda works with Yolanda in the Church of Violence. In this story they only meet once and there's no indication they have any contact beyond that.
  • CIA Evil, FBI Good: Averted. She's a CIA operative but is definitely one of the good guys.
  • Crossover Relatives: Subverted. She is a sister to Diane Martin (the canon Miss America), but she was only adopted into the family.
  • Eagleland: A heavily downplayed Type 1 since Eda doesn't show much patriotism, but she is a hero and her motif is distinctly American-themed, right down to her knives being called the Star-Spangled Daggers.
  • I Should Have Been Better: The reason she joined the CIA. After running away and letting a boy drown, she joined the CIA so she would never be too scared to help someone, and would always be strong enough to do so. Her joining Battle Fever is an extension of that.
  • Meta Guy: She immediately asks why the Miss America Battle Suit has a wig on the helmet.
  • Most Common Superpower: Seras at one point mentions how Eda's boobs are bigger than her own.

Denshi Sentai Denziman, the Network Warriors

    General Tropes
  • Adaptational Badass: Applies to the team as a whole, since in canon they let their NetNavis do all the fighting, only supporting from the real world using Battle Chips or altering computer systems.
  • Adaptational Expansion: In canon the Denzimen didn't have any personalized weapons. Here they each get one based on their canon NetNavis. In-universe they're actually modified versions of weapons used by their ancestors from Planet Denzi and named after them.
  • Age Lift: The biggest case in the series thus far, since in canon the five heroes were only twelve years old (ten in Yai's case).
  • Finishing Move: Subverted. While the Denzi Boomerang can destroy Vader Monsters at human size, they typically use their natural ability to enlarge to avoid this.
  • The Chosen One: They were each selected by Denzi Dog IC to be Denzimen. This was actually invoked because each of them is a direct descendant of the five mightiest warriors of Planet Denzi, who loaded their genetic information into the Denzi Computer upon Princess Denzi's request so IC would know who to select when the time came.

    Lan Hikari/DenziRed

Lan Hikari — DenziRed

  • Adaptational Skill: He's a karate master with enough experience to be teaching younger generations.
  • Genre Savvy: When Denzi Dog IC mentioned that he was sending out a gathering signal after selecting Lan to be DenziRed, Lan realized he wouldn't be fighting alone.
  • Groin Attack: Delivers one to a Dustler using the Denzi Punch. He's surprised the inhuman creatures can still feel pain in that location.
  • The Leader: Unlike previous Super Sentai the Denzimen don't have any sort of commanding officer figure, so Lan fills the role of team leader.
  • Ship Tease: It's hinted that he and Mayl are dating.

    Eugene Chaud/DenziBlue

Eugene Chaud — DenziBlue

  • Adaptational Dumbass: More than once he's fallen for a Vader scheme that Canon!Chaud would have easily seen through. It's actually lampshaded by Dex at one point.
  • Adaptational Job Change: He's a circus acrobat instead of a network investigator.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He gets along a lot better with the cast, even Lan.
  • Genre Savvy: He still shows shades of his canon personality at times, and he learns quickly.
  • Last-Name Basis: He insists the others refer to him as Chaud rather than Eugene.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He still likes anpan, much like his counterpart Daigoro Oume.

    Dex Oyama/DenziYellow

Dex Oyama — DenziYellow

    Yai Ayanokoji/DenziGreen

Yai Ayanokoji — DenziGreen

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In canon, there wouldn't be a female green ranger (at least not on the main team) until Kyuranger. Here Yai fills that role decades earlier.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: She doesn't have any of her snobby rich attitude from canon. Given she's a police detective, it's questionable if she's even rich to begin with.
  • Adaptational Origin Connection: Since she's actually younger than Tatsuya Midorikawa (Tatsuya is in his mid to late 20s while Yai is exactly 20 years old) her trip to the past thanks to Taimular's power involved her being sent back to high school during a time when she was doing work study with her father.
  • Adaptational Skill: Unlike in canon she's been trained as a police detective, giving her much more physical ability.
  • You Killed My Father: Her father, a fellow detective, is killed in the first chapter by Musasabilar. Despite getting her revenge near the end of the chapter, she keeps fighting to help stop the rest of the Vader Clan.

    Mayl Sakurai/DenziPink

Mayl Sakurai — DenziPink

  • Genre Blind: She thought she could just quit being part of Denziman after one victory and continue with her life goals. Shabonlar attacking her showed her otherwise.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: After surviving Shabonlar's attack and realizing she has to fight the Vader Clan in order to be able to reach her dream, she agrees to continue fighting alongside Denziman.
  • Last Request: She had wanted to fulfill her tennis coach's goal of making her the world tennis champion, to the point were she tried to quit Denziman to do it. Unfortunately, the Vader Clan had no intention of leaving her be.
  • Master of Disguise: She picks up this skill late into the series. It turns out her ancestor Roll was one as well.
  • Ship Tease: There's evidence to suggest she and Lan are dating.
